19 Dec 2019Yeshen Venema00:16:05

The designer-maker’s favourite photographer, Yeshen Venema is my guest on this episode of the podcast. He talks about preparing for a professional photo shoot so that you can get your art and products looking their best. If you have ever applied for a fair, a market, an event or anything similar you will have been asked to submit images which is then used in their marketing. Even stockists and galleries often use the maker’s photos on their website and social media. As such the photos are used beyond your own website and social media feed and that is why investing in a professional is always a good idea.

16 Jan 2019Tips for hiring a coach with Tia Lynn00:16:14

In this episode with Tia Lynn, we talk about the benefits of hiring a business coach to grow your art business. You don't always need to hire a coach in your niche, but someone who has been there already and understands what you need to grow is important. We discuss how this can save you time as the investment means you are making time to focus and grow your business and art practice.
If you have tried a lot of things on your own, done the online courses and you arent seeing the results then it is likely time to work with a coach and get fresh eyes on your situation. A good coach will give you the steps to progress as well as the feedback and accountability to get the work done.

08 Jun 2020Mindset for artists 1/500:11:06

In this episode Vicky Ross and I talk about emotions, particularly the emotions we carry around our work. I often talk to artists who are nervous or anxious about showing up. Often they want to grow their online audience but fear rejection or humiliation and avoid using social media altogether.  Vicky explains how our imprint years affect us as adults, and how self awareness helps us take control again to  work towards the things we want.

This is the first of five episodes about mindset for artists.

04 Sep 2024Ghia Haddad discusses the representation of Arab Women through art00:33:48

Artist Ghia Haddad joins me on this podcast to discuss her non Euro Centric approach to textiles and mixed media art.

She shares her experience of art history with a Euro-centric viewpoint and feeling outside of this as an Arab woman.

Her work explores textiles and representation of Arab women through the lens of an Emirati woman. Ghia's art is something that invites interaction and touch. In this episode she  talks about the Western approach to idolising of art that is to be revered, while her own art takes reference from her own culture that invites interaction through more than looking and permits touch and considers this more communal and democratic.

She goes on to talk about her series I Dream In Colour which uses the bridal gown as the symbol that crosses cultures and presents it in its various ways beyond the European white bridal gown. Tap here to see the collection

Decolonizing History is another of Ghia's series which represents queens from a bygone age, again reminding us that much of our knowledge of world history is told through the European lens. Hear her talk about her reimagining Cleopatra and Zenobia. See images of the artwork here

17 Oct 2018Sebastian Martorana00:32:46

Sebastian Martorana talks about his work as a stone sculptor. Often considered memorial makers, stone sculptors face a common issue of viewers not being able to see past the difficulty of the material to the concept of the work.
In this episode Sebastian gives a great analogy to understand the different types of stone by comparing them to photography (around 5mins).
The artist talks about his training, the perceptions of the discipline of stone carving as very traditional, rather than contemporary art. We talk about process in particular modern technology such as CNC machines which he doesn't use, preferring a hammer and chisel every time.

He then goes on to talk about Permanent Separation Anxiety, a powerful work he made earlier in 2018 which comments on the child/ parent separation at the US borders.
He uses this piece to memorialise current issues in the political climate, made contemporaneously rather than commenting on issues of the past, which is typical of stone sculpture.

07 Dec 2018Paul Catherall, London Linocuts00:43:12

Paul Catherall is a London based printmaker known for his bold linocuts of architectural landmarks. His work is instantly recognisable, and in this episode he talks about his career and process.

After training in illustration Paul found himself working from project to project until one came along that asked him to produce work that he recognised from early British Rail posters. Coupled with a trip to San Francisco where he found further inspiration, he pursued a stripped back poster style of design, with flat colours and developed it using linocuts. It is a style and process that he has not strayed from despite experimenting with other print techniques over the last twenty years.

18 Sep 2018Sarah Needham00:22:45

Sarah Needham is an artist whose work is based on research of shipping records from the 1700s. There she looks for records of pigments in the ships' cargo, which she then sources to create her own spatial abstract work.
Her time is spent both researching and painting. Sarah believes that returning to art after a period, raising her children, has given her a determined and resilient outlook she might not have had, if she had pursued life as a full time artist straight out of art school
She talks about the value of having a peer group that support each other, and her success at artists' fairs.

12 Dec 2018The Jaunt with Jeroen Smeets00:21:03

The Jaunt is a project that lets artists pre sell art work to fund a trip - or go on a jaunt- where they can be inspired by their new surroundings to create art work.

It is a simple concept of art patronage that allows the artist to explore new creative territory, and patrons to be a part of that journey.

Art buyers purchase work that will be produced as a result of the Jaunt. The art work they will receive is sold sight unseen - because it has yet to be made.

The project came about after seeing successful crowdfunding projects and talking to artists about travel and inspiring trips. I loved his ‘ how can we make it happen’ attitude.

The Jaunt came about in 2013 and now funds 10 trips a year for artists who Jeroen chooses based on art work he would like to own. The artists he selects are a combination of new and established.

The accessible price point of the artworks on sale ahead of an artists Jaunt has likely created a new wave of art patrons who can feel included in the creative process.

26 Sep 2019Coventry Biennial00:21:15

Ryan Hughes, artistic director for the Coventry Biennial talks about starting the Biennial in 2017 and what he learned from that event to build on, and create a bigger international biennial for 2019.

He talks about the theme of The Twin for this years event, which explores duality, and encouraged collaborations and peer to peer artist relationships. The Biennial has over 100 artists showing this year with three quarters of them being UK based and the rest international. He discusses the established names that you can expect to see alongside some of the early and mid career artists showing their work.

We go behind the scenes and he talks about working with stakeholders in the West Midlands to access new exhibiting spaces that open out the city, and how artists were responding to place.

21 Mar 2025Protecting your energy for art world success00:11:11

In this episode I talk about protecting your energy for your inevitable art world success.

It is important to protect your energy and watch out for 'coolers' that can throw you off track with their negative outlook on life.
As you find momentum and growth in your art career or business you’ll soon understand there’s a mindset and energy component that accompanies the actions and strategies.

Along this part you gotta look out for the coolers who don’t believe in your vision, your potential etc They usually talk about being realistic but generally bring down the vibe, make you doubt, see the bad side, present problems

These individuals tend to focus on the negatives, whether it’s in their own lives or in the people they interact with. They can be chronic complainers, doubters, or those who always anticipate failure instead of success.

The human mind is highly influenced by its surroundings, and if you’re surrounded by people who believe success is rare or that life is just a struggle, you might unconsciously adopt those beliefs.

But you’re smart so you can spot them.

Inside my program, Activation, we cover how to keep your vibe higher so you don’t succumb to these influences. How to actually stay there.
So you aren’t knocked around by others’ opinions that are contaminants in your energy field.

18 Jan 2018Artists Open House with Rachel Gluyas00:33:02

In this episode I talk to Rachel Gluyas from Dulwich Festival Artists' Open House.  Rachel organises the artists' open house much like I do for Camberwell Arts, and in this conversation we were able to get into the aspects of our roles that are little seen by the artists we support.

We talk about how the event has grown, what it means to the community and why the planning can take six months.  Rachel and I discuss what makes an artists' open house successful, and how being part of an organised event can help artists get more exposure.

Rachel and I talk about working with artists to help them promote their open studios and how artists can use the occasion to prepare work for display, practice talking about their work, getting feedback from visitors and using the event to invite galleries or art dealers if they are looking to take next steps.

Then we discuss the marketing and promotion of the overall event, and our work behind the scenes as well including meetup events where participating artists can meet each other and grow their network.

It was a really fun conversation and I hope you enjoy it.

12 Feb 2019Venice Biennale00:16:11

Ever wondered how to take part in the Venice Biennale ? This episode goes behind the scenes at the Venice Biennale, which is comprised of 3 layers. The National pavilions show work that represents each country that is taking part. The collateral events are exhibitions that have a more independent status, and often by groups or institutions, these can take place at the Giardini or the Arsenale, or they can be in the historic centre of Venice. Finally there is the fringe events, these are independent shows by artists or groups which run alongside the main event. Usually these projects do not use the official Bienniale badge or branding but they take place at the same time and across different sites.

We talk about the history of the biennial and its impact on the art market. There is a phrase we hear a lot in the art world " see in Venice, buy in Basel" and we discuss what this means, how showing at the Venice Biennale can raise an artists' profile and their market value.

03 Apr 2019Gina Soden - Art in Ruins00:25:31

Gina Soden is a fine art photographer with a fascination for derelict architecture. She travels around the world seeking decayed and abandoned buildings which become the subjects of her beautiful images.

Once loved ball rooms, halls, country houses which have been vacant for decades are her favourite subject matters. Her images show how nature has often grown into the empty spaces on one hand breathing new life into the structures and at the same time drawing attention to the past.

The structures she chooses are often highly decorated with frescoes, gilding and carving. The mind is always drawn to how these spaces would have been used in their hey day. Despite the love shown at the construction the buildings are now boarded up or sealed.
Soden considers the research that goes into the choosing the locations, as part of the process for her work.

The images are printed as large format photographs pulling the viewer into the space. More recently the artist has begun applying the images to metal surfaces and for her exhibition Archeologies at Charlie Smith Gallery she is showing the work on vintage mirrors which add another dimension to the art work.

In this episode Gina talks about her process, getting locked into a property , working towards the Archeologies exhibition and selling through her website.

06 Apr 2020Artist Support Pledge00:41:18

Matthew Burrows talks about #artistsupportpledge - a movement helping artists sell their work during coronavirus lockdown. He talks about how it started after hearing so many people found their exhibitions and fairs cancelled or postponed. Burrows goes on to explain the culture of generosity that he sees coming out of this, how the pledge works, and talks about some of the messages that he received from participating artists.

Artist as patron is one part of the pledge, where an artist agrees to purchase the work of another once they have made sales of a £1000/ $1000 themselves. Burrows talks about setting the price at £/$ 200 as an accessible level for people who are new to buying art as well as established collectors, and how selling directly fits into the art business economy.

15 Jan 2019Creative Collaboration - Richard Watkins00:25:14

Rich and I met in 2014 and I invited him on the podcast to talk about collaboration and what it truly means for artists to use this as part of their creative practice.

We discuss how it differs from participation, and he says a true collaboration is one where all parties involved are bringing something to the table and each person is growing their own practice. It is not about having an idea and then bringing people on board to help you fulfil it, that would be a straightforward project. Collaboration by contrast is approaching the conversation with an openness to how the project could be, and then to successfully fulfil it, having parameters in place particularly around the time frame and outcomes.

25 Sep 2021Artist Websites00:06:19

I see a lot of artists websites and I have noticed that an artist with a lot of experience can still have a poor website.

Whether an artist is new to the game or they have years of experience under their belt, I have noticed their website can still be letting them down. This typically happens when they don't communicate their  recent experience or upcoming events, and have not thought through the website visitor journey.

So many artist websites neglect the visitor journey and their sites are in need of updating with recent and current experiences of the artists.

In this episode I share some of the areas that can help you update your website and create a  better visitor journey so your website really works for you.

14 Feb 2025When an artist says they want gallery representation00:19:57

In this episode I explain how I respond when an artist says they want gallery representation. We look at their sales history, exhibiting experience and more.
Often artists come looking for gallery representation before they are ready. I think it is great to know what to expect and the road to representation.  However, if the goal is to offload the 'business' side of being an artist, there's often other elements that the artist needs to work on before approaching any dealers, which includes professional and personal growth.

A guide to gallery representation is found here

31 Mar 2025Michael Petry Mirror Mirror01:07:47

Michael Petry is the director at MOCA London. He is also the author of a number of books and in this episode he talks about his latest book, Mirror Mirror, The Reflective Surface in Art. Starting with Van Eyck's Arnolfini Betrothal, the book tracks the story of mirrors and the reflective surface in art through to contemporary art with mirrored surfaces inviting self reflection, 'holding up a mirror' to society and the viewers' participation in the artwork.

Michael talks about how artists use the reflective surface to draw in visitors, how this affects engagement with art such as Kusama's Infinity Room and the many artists using the reflective surface for political commentary. The final chapter in the book which Michael talks about in this episode is about narcissism and the popular trend of selfies.

11 Dec 2024Tim Fowler00:37:09

In this episode I am joined by Tim Fowler who talks about his exhibition, The Ground at the Attenborough Centre, Leicester. The Leicester based artist talks about the research that went into the exhibition which features his large scale paintings of plants that followed the same migratory pattern as his own DNA - from West Africa to the Caribbean to the UK.

He talks about setting himself challenges such as painting large scale before he had any exhibiting opportunity, and selling at fairs where he wanted to be seen before any gallery represented him. Tim currently has gallery representation and we talk about the different expectations and challenges of working with commercial galleries and institutions. While both offer programming, they vary in their expectations and outcomes.

While preparing for the exhibition (ends 26 January 2025) Tim worked with a film maker to create a documentary which you can watch here.

15 May 2019Sara Shakeel - blinging it00:33:30

Sara Shakeel is a self taught digital artist who has moved into sculpture and brings her first solo show to the Now Gallery at Greenwich Peninsula, London. Ahead of the exhibition, The Great Supper, Sara and I talked about her journey into the art world. We talk about happiness, social media, her quote ‘every picture heals a part of me and I hope it heals a part of you too’ and her successes as an artist that travels the world and is courted by major brands.

Sara started out as a dentist and moved into making art because it made her happy. Sharing on social media she gained the attention of celebrities, later visited the Swarovski factory, and recently designed the cover for Grazia Italia. She produces a lot of editorial work for various magazines and brands.

Her first large sculpture piece at the Now Gallery in Greenwich is her first solo installation. And from here she hopes to create more physical art works.

The exhibition is at Now Gallery, Greenwich Peninsula, London SE10 from 15 May to 23 June 2019.

09 Oct 2019Alasdair Thomson00:15:19

I talk to Edinburgh based stone sculptor Alasdair Thomson about his  training in Italy working with artigiani and using the time in Italy to study the great masters of the Renaissance. We talk about how his art history background influences his contemporary work as stone sculpture is often considered to be a medium for memorialising, and his use of contemporary subjects to make his work relateable to different audiences. We discuss his preference for Carrara marble over local Scottish stones, and its connection to art history.

Alasdair has eschewed the gallery model in recent times, and now prefers to source his own clients who commission him on private projects and brand collaborations.

Mindset is the biggest challenge for many artists particularly those who might be career changers, those who feel uncomfortable raising their prices or taking action to get to the next level .

12 Apr 2025Why is ai art so triggering?00:22:42

In this episode I talk about using AI generated images as reference material for your artwork. I go on to talk about how artists are often dismissive of AI generated art and creators of Ai art calling themselves artists.

I go on to talk about how other industries outside of visual arts refer to themselves as artists. And previous tech developments such as analogue to digital photography, platforms like Canva, camera phones or the ready made have triggered artists in the past as weakening their craft or diluting what it means to be an artist.  Is this true or did these things just create more resources and improve visual literacy?

I talk about a benefit of Ai image generation which in my opinion is the expanding vocabulary that is required to make better prompts and can help artists and art enthusiasts beyond the prompt, in talking about their art.

This episode also invites listeners to notice how ai artists might be a mirror or a trigger to where they are holding themselves back, and explore their own definition of being an artist - eg is it a requirement to struggle, or have art school debt!? And I talk about staying in your lane and noticing distraction. Some of these topics such as ' is it art if it is made with AI ' are merely distractions from wider issues playing out in the world today, and to be mindful of where your attention is, when you could be channeling it into your art.

There's lot to discuss in this episode.

07 Mar 2018Artists' Fairs - Roys People Art Fair00:24:37

Episode 8 of the podcast is about taking part in artists' fairs so that artists have a place to show, build their exhibiting cv, meet buyers, curators, and visitors directly to sell their work

Roy Tyson is a driven artist who enjoyed the thrill of taking part in artists' fairs where he could learn from his visitors and sell his fine art photography. It led him to set up his own art fair in 2017 and the next one takes place April 2018.

Roys People Art Fair is the only artists' led art fair. The artists taking part are all involved in the promotion and marketing of the event, and are encouraged to use the opportunity to further their art careers by inviting as many people as they can reach.
The fair is unusual in the amount of support it offers participating artists particularly around the business aspects of being an artist.

23 Apr 2019Lauren Baker00:26:42

Lauren Baker is a multidisciplinary artist working from her studio in London. She talks about having an epiphany while in Peru and henceforth becoming an artist. Her work combines spiritual teachings with her interest in research based science, particularly astronomy and developments in our understanding of the big bang and space beyond planet earth.
Her first show in a pub basement led to working with Tate Galleries with an installation and workshops.
Her early work used crystals and gold leaf, more recently she has become known for her work in neon. Lauren's most recent work uses old tomes about philosophy and science which were exploded and onto which she grows crystals.

She enjoys delivering talks and encouraging people to express their creativity, and also actively works with conservation charities to raise funds for them to continue their work.

07 Feb 2019Carrie Brummer00:19:20

Carrie Brummer talks about her current project which was inspired by a visit to the US National Archives.
While living in the Middle East, Carrie formed an online community called Artists Strong, to stay in touch with more artists.

The US National Archives revealed images of women in the 1940s who had taken jobs that were traditionally taken up by men, however with the men away at war, the women took up the jobs. Curiously the photographs provided no further information such as names of the sitters. It was the absence of this information that Carrie was drawn to, and her art work now celebrates these women. Her art uses a range of crafting skills which she says were also traditionally associated with women.

In this episode she talks about working towards an exhibition in Ottawa.

05 Mar 2021Show Your Art - How to build an art career without a gallery00:15:55

I talk about my book, Show Your Art, How to build an art career without a gallery.

I published this book in April 2020 as an ebook, then as a paperback in August 2020. In this episode I talk about writing the book, and the joy of seeing it make positive impact on the lives of the artists who it was written for.

Originally aimed at artists in the early stages of their career, the book aims to empower artists to take things into their own hands rather than wait for a gallery to come calling. After all, there are more artists than galleries could ever manage.
I'm delighted the book hit bestseller status for both the ebook and the paperback.

Dave Buonaguidi is my guest on this episode and he talks about his career in advertising and how that has given him a skillset in marketing, now that he is a full time artist.

Dave talks about his career, entry into art after doing a one day workshop in screenprinting, finding his 'universe'  and creating works that are recognisable under his artist brand.

11 Jun 2020Mindset for artists 4/500:18:50

I talk to Vicky Ross about how our personal history is the lens through which we see our future. Many artists I work with are moving into being full time artists and others are transitioning their careers.

The problem I see over and over is that most artists are seeking visibility and success, but internally they hold themselves back while outwardly voicing their goals.

In this episode Vicky talks about looking at our history through the successes we have had, even if they were not connected to their art.

Then she talks about being present, and using the present as the starting point and asking what you would do differently if you had all the resources to achieve the things you wanted.

In the present moment, we need to get very specific and clear about the things we want in the next 6-12 months.  She discusses that in each moment we are capable of changing our thoughts and the future we would like for ourselves.

Vicky goes on to discuss the thoughts that  can arise that do not serve us, and how to ask ourselves better questions. And how to return to the present moment at any time the inner critic rises up or we feel anxious about moving forward in our art and business.

This episode is number 4 of 5 episodes about mindset for artists who want to uplevel in their art and business.

04 Feb 2020Liz Gilmore talks about Earthly Delites00:21:59

Liz Gilmore talks about the 3 exhibitions at the Hastings Contemporary. She discusses Anne Ryan's solo show titled Earthly Delites, a group show of contemporary painting curated by Anne Ryan titled The Studio at 4am and The Age of Turmoil featuring 3 modern British artists.

We talk about how the show was put together and how Ryan deconstructs paintings and builds them again.

The Studio at 4am is a show than Ryan was invited to curate. She has brought together 8 artists who have painting at the core of their practice but like Ryan are not confined by the traditional edges of the canvas.

The exhibitions are at Hastings Contemporary til March 29th, 2020.

25 Jan 2018Business Karma with Nicole Liloia00:18:30

In this episode of the podcast I talk to business strategist and coach, Nicole Liloia.
She explains business karma which might be holding back your success.

Nicole talks about being responsive to other people, requests, emails and the like, if you are finding that people are not following up and responding to you.

Then she talks about engagement. If you are finding you are not getting the engagement you want, say from your social media platforms, then to check in with yourself and see if you are engaging on other peoples content. It is not all about presenting your own work but being supportive to your network as well.

Then she discusses follow through. Are you making applications and leaving them half done, are there enquiries sitting in your inbox? Follow through is all about completing the task, which can be doing the thing you said you would, it could be sending the images through to gallery or helping someone that you said you would.

It's a shorter episode than others, but definitely worth a listen and she has lots of simple actionable advice to clean up your business karma.

Nicole has also created a pdf to help you batch your work so that you can spend time doing more the creative stuff you love.  You can get access to it here
