18 Jul 20222. We Love Insurance, But We Love People More00:16:25

Send us a text

We all know that leader.

You know, the one who loves to dictate, delegate, and do their own thing without checking in with their people–but is that really what a leader is?

My answer would be no. Many people want to identify as a leader but are unwilling to put in the hard work it takes to be one. Today on the show, we will discuss one of my convictions that ties right into that.

At Vincent Family Insurance, our office Mantra and leading principle is “We love Insurance, but We Love People More.”

At first glance, you might think, “What does that mean? Loving people is leading people. Sometimes that looks like tough love, and sometimes that simply means getting down in the trenches, rolling up your sleeves, and doing the dirty work.

When you are a leader, you keep your people at the center of everything you do.

The servant leadership approach is helping your employees to win first; in return, you will always win.

Listen today to learn more about loving the people you lead.

Episode Highlights:

  • The importance of loving people more.
  • How to love people more.
  • The three keys of leadership.
  • How tough conversations can be loving.

17 Oct 202216. Being Others Focused with Dale & Brian Karmie00:50:11

Send us a text

Sometimes winning is just not losing. The journey to the success of Foreverlawn Inc. did not come easy. Brothers Dale & Brian Karmie built their business from the ground up, sometimes going without a paycheck in order to always make sure their employees were taken care of.

In the year 2000, both brothers were in the software consulting business. They had grown up with an entrepreneurial father, and were beginning to feel a stirring desire to start their own business. One day, Dale came across an article about a local college getting a turf field. He sent the article to his brothers, and it sparked an idea in Brian. He thought a turf business would do well in the desert southwest. Six months later, in 2002, Dale & Brian moved from Ohio to Albuquerque, New Mexico and started an artificial turf business. They left their wives and kids behind in the pursuit to build a better life for them.

When they arrived in New Mexico, they started seeing homes with gravel painted green in effort to look like grass. Everywhere they looked, they could see opportunity. Their families eventually were able to join them in Albuquerque, but the first year seemed like it was struggle after struggle. After a year and a half, they got a call from their turf provider that the company was going out of business. This meant that they needed to find a new provider and change their name.

In 2004, they started a new turf business and called it Foreverlawn. As their success grew, they went from being a local company in Albuquerque to becoming a turf provider that was setting up other dealers. As the company grew, they had the opportunity to move back to Ohio, where they now have about 80 employees in their home office, including a number of family members. Foreverlawn now has close to 90 dealers across the US.

We hope you enjoy today’s episode and learn about the value of being ‘others focused’!

24 Oct 202217. Take Charge of Your Future with Joseph Puckett00:49:31

Send us a text

Sometimes you come to a place in life where you know something needs to change..

For Joseph Puckett, that moment came when his wife was about to have their first child. They had no money, their credit cards were maxed out, and he got the call from his wife at the grocery store… they had bounced a check.

Joseph began his career in leadership development at Amsouth Bank at 21 years old. A few short years into his career, a financial crisis happened and it was no longer a good time to be in banking. Joseph made the decision to open an Allstate Agency from scratch. Within a year of starting his agency, he met a guy named Craig Wiggins and realized he could go further with him. He sold his agency and basically forced himself into Craig’s business.

Joseph and Craig had a small consulting company at the time called Transform Your Agency. He asked Craig if he could work for him in his agency. At first, Craig said ‘no’, but Joseph and his wife moved to Huntsville from Birmingham, and he set up an office in the attic of Craig’s business. Over time, he slowly inserted himself into Craig’s agency. Within 4-5 months, Craig gave him one of his agencies to run and within a year, he was running Craig’s entire operation.

10 years later, they are now working with over 1600 agencies. Joseph personally works with 70 agencies on a monthly basis. Over the years, they’ve trained over 20,000 people. Beau now works with the Craig Wiggins Coaching platform as an agency owner mentor and consultant. We hope you enjoy this episode and are inspired to take charge of your future and create the life you want!

Welcome back to The Conviction of a Leader! We are excited you are here! In today’s episode, we are chatting with Dave Segen. Dave is a local business leader who lives in Northeast Ohio with his wife and kids.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Dave moved to Ohio for college at Kent State. At the time, his plan was to move back to Pittsburgh after college, but he really grew to love the community. He met his now wife, and decided to stay in the area. At 25, he started as the catering manager at Cleveland State university’s arena. In less than a year, he moved into the director position, running the 15,000 seat arena. For the next four years, he continued there and traveled around the country doing PGA tours and other events. After four years, he moved to Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse and spent eight years there as the Assistant Manager of Hospitality. At Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, he worked events such as the NBA finals and was one of the lead planners for the Republican National Convention.

Dave eventually got married and started a family. He soon realized that his 70-80 hour work weeks didn’t really fit with family life. He and his wife took a trip to Mexico and talked about the future. Together, they made the decision that Dave would do one more season at the arena. A pivotal moment came when he realized he had to work Christmas day. Soon after, he met with a local business owner a few times, which resulted in purchasing a restaurant.

Dave is now the owner of Bellacino’s Pizza & Grinders in Stow, and he also runs the Kitchen on Front Street inside the Cashmere Cricket in Cuyahoga Falls. Going from having 1,000 employees to 30 was a big adjustment, and Dave shares some of the lessons he learned from this experience.

One of Dave’s strongest convictions is to lead next to people instead of in front of them or behind them. Together, we will learn from his experiences as he shares his story. We hope you enjoy today’s episode!

17 Jul 2024S2.E10. Evolving as a Leader: Stephanie Riggins Story of Growth and Success01:05:19

Send us a text

Join us for an inspiring episode of "The Conviction of a Leader" as we walk through the unbelievable journey of Stephanie Riggins, a career changer from secretary to award-winning agency owner. Stephanie's story is one of relentless hard work and determination. Coming from fairly humble beginnings, she has worked her way up in the insurance industry until, in 2020, at the peak of the COVID-19 global disaster, she was able to launch her own agency.

Her personal mantra, "What you believe you can achieve, you will," has been the foundation of success in life. In this episode, she's going to show how she built a culture of abundance and work-life balance into the agency where accountability lives in concert with success.

We will address how critical accountability and leadership are to the growth of business. Stephanie gets very candid as she explains how she evolved as a boss that could only delegate tasks to now being a true leader, one who inspires and motivates her team. We discuss all the most common myths regarding team building—including why patience is so important to this process, why development never stops, and even the value of role players over top performers.

We will also go into the practicalities of such challenges as work-life integration, which for many people is considerable, and discuss the isolation that can come with leadership. Stephanie gives advice from her heart, which will challenge leaders to love the journey, be content in the process, but yet grow.

Listen to some of the powerful insights of Stephanie Reagan on how you, too, can create a thriving and balanced work environment while leading with conviction. This is a jam-packed episode with wisdom and advice for anyone aspiring to be a good leader!

24 Jul 2024S2.E11. From College Hoops to Global Impact: Eric Coblentz on True Leadership01:01:32

Send us a text

In a captivating episode of "The Conviction of a Leader," host Beau Vincent features his brother-in-law, Eric Coblentz. As a seasoned leader who shares a rich background and experience behind missionary works, Beau and Eric start an insightful dialogue into Eric’s journey. From playing college basketball to his time spent in Haiti and Indonesia, Eric offers insight into his leadership. The most prominent goal is the necessity of self-awareness and reflection in effective leadership. Indeed, Eric discusses the way leadership is recognized in different countries, as well as the need to adjust his style.

The episode takes an emotional turn when Eric recounts a time in Indonesia and life-threatening event that made him feel alone and desperate during the recovery period. Beau and Eric, guided by the memory of this event, discuss the importance of leading through one’s suffering. Specifically, how a leader is to use his struggles to transform them into lessons and maturity. Finally, the episode concludes by discussing the essence of leading not by fear but through love.

Listeners are recommended to remember the inevitability of change and how profoundly fear of loss accompanies them. The leader’s role is to convert these fears into growth opportunities. Thus, this episode concludes with Eric’s explanation that leadership is not leading yourself but others towards creating long-lasting good. Young leaders are encouraged to be afraid but use it to discover their character, follow their cause, and lead with love.
