16 Sep 2022Episode #115 An update on CTE (Cumulative Traumatic Encephalopathy)00:38:59

A recent paper was published last month by Nowinski et al. applying the Bradford Hill Criteria to the subject of CTE.

CTE is neurological disease people can suffer as a results of many concussions over a life time, or a history of playing contact sports.

Repetitive head impacts have become a hot topic of discussion. Until now there hasn’t been research that has proven a cause and effect relationship between repetitive head impacts and CTE.

While organizations have made changes due to speculation, this paper may be the first providing insight into the causal relationship between repetitive head impacts and CTE.

Will this change the way you view contact sports?

22 Nov 2024Episode #168 Abdominal Massage & digestive upset 00:37:23

Today’s episode is the Season 5 Finale. Thank you to everyone that continues to support the podcast. I am going to take some time off to recharge. Enjoy the holiday season with your family and friends.

During today’s episode I discuss abdominal massage as a first line of defence for abdominal pain.

I talk about the relevant research and the most commonly suffered from abdominal symptom being constipation. This is a topic that isn’t discussed enough and very common in the general population. Many people do not know that manual therapy can serve as part of symptom management. Furthermore, while certain areas of manual therapy struggle to have research to measure outcomes, abdominal massage seems to be one with plenty of research published on the topic.

We also discuss the importance of diagnosis and evaluation of abdominal pain, when abdominal massage should not be used, as well as common life style and behaviour modifications that are often suggested as a management tool to improve symptoms.

Have you used abdominal massage to manage symptoms of abdominal discomfort? Comment below.

Trying to get your Massage Therapy license following graduation can be one of the most stressful things a student goes through.

With the uncertainty of the exam it’s often difficult to know how, or what to study to become successful.

During this week's episode I provide a few tips I think have worked well in my 15 years of preparing students for the OSCE.

What helped you pass your exam and get your Massage Therapy license?

22 Jul 2022Episode #111 Support and communication in brain injury 00:31:24

I recently wrote a blog post about the nuances of communication and support for those that have suffered a brain injury.

I came research by Togher in 2012, that discussed the importance a supportive partner can play in the recovery process.

The paper outlines aspect of collaborative vs. Non-collaborative communication.

During this episode I review the paper and how I believe it will change my practice moving forward.

What importance do you think communication plays in healthcare?

Comment below. We’ll see you in the next one!

22 May 2020Episode #21 Does CBD oil work ?00:22:44

The use of CBD oils, creams and lotions is popular in the therapy industry.

From sales within clinics to patients, to them filling racks at trade shows, I've seen them everywhere.

Sparked by curiosity I wanted to find out what the research says about the use of transdermal CBD specifically and if these topicals serve any therapeutic benefit whatsoever.

Have a listen to this week's episode to find out what I found. Do you agree with my findings?

We'll see you in the next one!
