Gemma & Russ are founders of Two Drifters Distillery, the world’s first distillery to have a carbon negative footprint. A self-imposed carbon tax forces the business to avoid creating CO2 emissions, rather than offsetting ones that have already been created.

With Russ’ Chemistry background and Gemma’s marketing skills, the two are making sure that Two Drifters rums are in the mix on the global rum stage, but are leading the way when it comes to credible sustainability in the drinks industry.

Katie has worked in a variety of settings from birth suite in the hospital, to homebirth, traditional community midwifery, and infant feeding clinics. Katie has worked within specialised midwifery programs for under 19 year olds, she led a midwifery team for pregnant women dealing with alcohol, drug and/or complex psychological health challenges, and has worked supporting lactation with families of small and vulnerable babies in neonatal intensive care units.

Katie started teaching early on in her lactation career when she was given the job of ‘acting head of lactation’ only 6 months after qualifying as a lactation consultant. This came with another jump in the deep end when she had to finish writing and teaching the remaining half of a 45-hour accredited lactation course for midwives and child health nurses to become IBCLC’s! Since then, Katie has worked in universities and hospitals teaching students, midwives and doctors; basically, anyone who will listen to her talk about the marvels of breastfeeding, lactation and human milk!

Katie currently spends her working time creating The Midwives’ Cauldron podcast, building online lactation and breastfeeding courses, and providing lactation consultations globally.

18 Sep 2024Skills Sprint: A Business Without Managers00:06:30

Is your business struggling with staff motivation? Are your products and services up to the expectations of customers or is there space for more?

Mayden struggled with these questions and they tore up the rule book and got rid of their managers.

Today they are thriving.

Prior to joining Mayden, Michele worked for 10 years in international aid before moving to a business development role with an NHS community service provider. After yet another operational restructure, which the NHS is notorious for, Michele became Head of Marketing and PR for that organisation. Michele joined Mayden in 2014 as a freelance marketing contractor but the lure of Mayden's open culture, sense of purpose and fantastic group of colleagues made staying on in a permanent role a no brainer. Within two years of Michele joining, Mayden took a leap of faith to become a company of self managing teams, at which point she retrained as a coach and set up Mayden's internal coaching programme. Michele is a professionally certified Business and Personal Coach and runs both Mayden's coaching and mentoring programmes, as well as working across the business to support colleagues to thrive in a company that organises a little differently.

Having helped his previous employer scale and plant over 1.5 million trees in the developing world, Richard soon realised that whilst tree planting was great, it did not solve the climate change issue! This has to be solved through behaviour change and a consciousness shift in consumers, employers and manufacturers!

With that in mind, Play It Green was born out of a desire to create a solution to climate change and to do it in a transparent and conscious way.

Play It Green helps its customers with behaviour change, education, and positive environmental and social impact. They also support the sustainability journey at each and every step. From footprint reporting to science-based targets, from carbon literacy training to sustainable suppliers, they can help, and it all starts with their unique Climate Positive Workforce initiative!

Best of all, 10% of all turnover generated by Play It Green is regiven to good causes, as chosen by its customers!

09 Oct 2024The Loneliness of Leadership00:53:14

Tim Kemp describes the 'loneliness of leadership' beautifully.

Not just in terms of responsibility of decisions, but also in terms of having no one to talk to and get support from.

It is a barrier for development and Tim has set about addressing this through peer coaching and creating spaces where leaders can be asked critical questions.

We explore this topic and discuss the lessons for all of us trying to build supportive networks at work and foster curiosity and humility.

01 Apr 2025Dealing with Unmotivated Team Members00:58:07

We recorded this special episode with an expert panel live at The Orchard in London.

The question we debated was : How to deal with a staff member who is disengaged and unmotivated after returning from parental leave.

We explored why they are disengaged, whose problem is it, who should help, how the organisation should welcome people back and is it culturally outdated to expect people to be highly motivated.

The panel was a talented group of industry experts and leaders.

How have you overcome this challenge with your colleagues? Were the team involved in helping them feel more settled?

04 Sep 2024Skills Sprint : Break Silos & Build Trust00:06:21

We hear complaints about favouritism, silos and politics across business frequently. Yet, few are able to solve these issues

Reciprocal mentoring could be a powerful tool to help.

This episode summarises the conversation with Gilly Shapiro who is helping companies to set up and manage this process.

The idea is simple. Connect people across boundaries such as department, location, hierarchy or status and encourage them to work together, mentoring each other.

The results are excellent and help create trust and build understanding across previously misunderstood relationships

26 Feb 2025People Who Mislead Us00:33:51

The idea of someone lying to us creates huge fears, especially if they are a work colleague or a key supplier.

Trust underpins who we are and how we cooperate with the people around us. A breach of trust through lying is a dramatic issue to have to manage.

But people try to mislead us every day, sellers, buyers and colleagues. How should we deal with it?

In this episode I talk through;

  • What do we mean by being misleading

  • Who tries to mislead us - are they simply charlatans trying to rip us off?

  • Why do they behave this way?

  • What you can do to avoid being taken advantage of.

Graham is passionate about maximising business value through understanding the thoughts, feelings and opinions of those we work with. He believes that as highly skilled listeners, with clarity of intent and focussed attention, we can truly learn what others know and think.

Graham draws on a wealth of commercial business experience gained over 25 years in a range of sectors. Having led teams on both sides of the buying/selling table, he’s experienced at first-hand the impact on results of excellent listening to poor listening, and everything in between.

11 Sep 2024Run Your Business Without Managers00:49:32

Mayden made a decision to operate without managers.

They realised that they needed to provide some frameworks for their teams so they created internal coaches.

Since then they have become more efficient, more effective and receive excellent customer feedback.

In addition their staff are all proud to work there.

In this podcast we explore the model with Michele who is the owner of the coaching framework. We discuss how they set business direction and the challenges and opportunities of working without hierarchy.

It is an inspirational episode for anyone seeking to work differently, drive productivity and slash internal complexity.

24 Jul 2024Skills Sprint: Building Accountability into your Team00:05:54

A frustration in team performance is often feeling under estimated, or siloed into a specific set of tasks.

After talking to Jo Keeler I realised the importance of making time to allow your team to connect with each other and share their own preferences and strengths.

By sharing with each other you strengthen the web of connections, but also you help each person share perhaps hidden skills

Accountability for performance comes when people have clear tasks and accountability and they buy in much more when they feel heard and understood

17 Apr 2024Skills Sprint : Restructuring & Difficult Conversations00:06:55

In this highlights episode I reflect on what I learned from David Ford about setting up an organisation for restructures.

10 May 2023Finding Opportunities Through the Dreams of Others00:44:20

Sean grew up thinking there were no green spaces in Earl’s Court, which is why his friends and brothers adopted the local cemetery as their park – playing sports, riding bikes and climbing trees. Later on, he learnt there actually were plenty of local gardens, but they were all privately owned and under lock and key.

On weekends Sean's mum took him to work with her at ‘The Gateway Club’ – a centre for young people with learning disabilities. It was a club with scarce resources, but the staff were very caring, patient and nurturing. This stuck! He was proud to know that his mum took care of these people. They would call him their ‘brother’ and his mum their ‘mum’. One big family.

In 2006, Sean travelled the world for a year. During that time he mixed with wonderful people, each with their own traits and with a common goal in life: to be happy. He absorbed the environment – from the street children in Mumbai to the opulence of Dubai, and realised that sports played a big part in children’s happiness. It was a way of bringing people together. From the homemade cricket bats in India to the dilapidated boxing gyms in Cuba, resourcefulness seemed to overcome the hardship of poverty.

Sean returned to the UK in 2007 and founded Solidarity Sports. His first project – ‘Six Weeks of Football Fun’ – gave 20 children living in Earl’s Court the opportunity to enjoy sports and keep healthy. Since then, he has helped children all over London. From taking over 100 children on exciting trips abroad to publishing their very own cookbook, the journey has given Sean and him team smiles, tears and lots of laughter in between.

Sean's vision is to help more children and have a more positive impact on their lives. The Sports Solidarity slogan used to be: ‘Inspiring children to be’. However, sometimes he thinks he enjoys working with young people so much that it should read the opposite: ‘Inspiring adults to be’. It’s closer to the truth.

When her successful career as the front women and founder of ‘100 Fables’ came to a stand still during Covid, Lyndsey dedicated lockdown to losing weight, healing her relationship with food and adapting her mindset and behaviours to feel the strongest, happiest and healthiest she ever has inside and out.

She had tried and failed so many times before due to the confusing plethora of information out there. Now truly understanding the process and always having a passion to help others she decided to retrain and instead of finding connection and joy with people through music, she would do so through fitness to help others become their fittest, healthiest and happiest selves.

4 years on she has now been a fully qualified Personal Trainer for 3 years and has helped over 150 people with their fitness journey on a 1-1 basis. Her books are constantly full and she has plans in place to open her own gym in the future to allow her community to grow and thrive even more.

Her favourite part of the job is seeing her clients evolve. The basis of the work is never a quick fix attitude but a journey of learning and growing inside and out, getting to know yourself, giving my clients the knowledge, support and tools to become the person they’ve always wanted to be, proving they can do things they thought not possible and ensure they get what they want from this process and actually keep it so they live their happiest, healthiest lives. 13 Nov 2024Lead First; Location Second - The First & Last Rule in Remote Working00:53:09

We are entering a revolution in work, the first major changes in 100 years.

Not since the days of the introduction of the 5 day week and the 9-5 workday have we seen so much turmoil.

Workplace conflict has an impact on quality of life and mental health.

For managers that creates a responsibility to be good at dealing with conflict.

Here I reflect on what I learned from talking to Richard Saundry

1. Don't assume managers are capable

2. Address issues as early as possible

3. Plan and think ahead

4. Find shared interests

25 Sep 2024The Secret to Success in Difficult Conversations. 00:49:09

There is a difference between the attitude towards training and practice between sports people, musicians and performers; and people in business.

In business, practice is seen as negative, in performance it is essential.

In this episode we discuss how practice can become part and parcel of business and the importance of creating a safe space in which to develop and learn.

Phil sets up practice spaces and programmes that empower teams and leaders to prepare better, predict how conversations will go and to learn to flourish in difficult moments through learning from doing.
