11 Oct 2023 | 087: Learning to Trust your own Voice with Jennifer Knapp. | 01:09:42
Jennifer Knapp is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, author, speaker and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases Kansas (debut 1998, Gold-certified), Lay It Down (2000), and The Way I Am (2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musician has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was featured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and 2010. Knapp received critical acclaim for her human approach to the divine, with The Los Angeles Times calling her “a rising star” and People Magazine describing her as “an uncommonly literate songwriter.” As the first major artist in the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBTQ identity, her unique position created opportunities for national dialogue, including appearances on Larry King Live and the TEDx stage. In 2012 Knapp founded the non-profit organization Inside Out Faith, through which she continues to speak and perform nationally as an advocate for LGBTQ & faith issues. Today on the pod she speaks about:
Jennifer Knapp has been a very helpful resource to me in my own coming out, and I was delighted to be able to speak with her, and share our conversation with you. 10 Nov 2022 | 084: Quitting... with Nancy Shadlock, and kind of Annie Duke | 00:10:48
I share my synopsis of Annie Duke's book Quit. She shares so many helpful ideas of how to know when it's time to quit and how to do it well. It really stretched my opinion of quitting from a judgement of being a bad thing, to it being a really good thing. I hope it stretches you to think about times you maybe should have quit sooner in the past, or gives you courage and tools for quitting something that's not working for you right now. If you'd like to share a quitting story from your past that others can learn from, you can record it here and we may even include it on the show if you'd like: https://anchor.fm/comingout/message And if you're ready to quit something but it feels too scary, send me a message and I will be your quit coach. Through this prompting that led to healing old ways of seeing and interacting with her body, Becca has been able to reckon with many of the narratives surrounding loving one's body and oneself that she learned growing up, which has ultimately allowed her to become a coach and create space for others to find that healing, as well. Despite being raised as Jehovah’s Witness, Dalia Kinsey already had an awareness of diverging from the traditional framework of sexuality that was presented to her as a child. After growing up and coming out as queer, she recounts her experience of leaving the cult-and thus the community-she had known for so long in order to live her life freely. By doing the work of enforcing boundaries and continually honoring and returning to those feelings from childhood, she now implements the values of transparency and authenticity in her work as a dietician advocating for body neutrality. Dalia Kinsey is a Registered Dietitian, Inclusive Employee Wellness Specialist, and creator of the Body Liberation for All podcast, a show dedicated to amplifying the health and happiness of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) folx. On her mission to spread joy, reduce suffering, and eliminate health disparities in her QTBIPOC community, she rejects diet culture and teaches people to use nutrition as a self-care and personal empowerment tool. 03:00: Being raised Jehovah’s Witness Dalia’s Social Media Facebook: (Centered Life Coaching) Would you like to donate coming out support for a deserving person? 29 Dec 2021 | 073: Coming Out and Supporting Others with Joe Boivin | 00:32:36
Josiah Boivin talks with Nancy about the several stages that have encapsulated his coming out as a trans man. After experiencing coming to terms with his own identity, he now desires to focus on telling his story so that it might be an example of hope and comfort for others, which includes giving advice to parents and those whose loved ones may be transitioning. After spending many hours of childhood catching insects and looking them up in the encyclopedia, Joe went to college to study Biology. He now has a PhD in Neuroscience and is completing his postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, where his research focuses on how brain cells form connections with each other during development. 02:30: Coming out Facebook: (Centered Life Coaching)

During this winter’s hibernation season, The Coming Out Chronicles are taking a break from putting out new material. Joe Boivin returns to the show this week to reminisce with Nancy about their shared experience at a Missionary Kid boarding school in Kenya. Back before either of them had fully come out, Joe describes what it was like as he gradually came to terms with his queerness during that time. As they discuss how their relationship with each other developed throughout the following years, both reflect on how time has allowed them to change in so many ways, all of which have ultimately led up to where they are today. After spending many hours of childhood catching insects and looking them up in the encyclopedia, Joe went to college to study Biology. He now has a PhD in Neuroscience and is completing his postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, where his research focuses on how brain cells form connections with each other during development. 03:50: Joe’s experience at RVA Facebook: (Centered Life Coaching)
