15 Feb 2022Johanna Konta & Fairwell SImon Blair - "How do you handle not only disappointment but also your triumphs?"00:43:14

This episode is a combination of a farewell to Simon Blair for being a fantastic co-host on The Coaching Podcast and a tribute to former professional tennis player, Johanna Konta (highest ranking of WTA #4 in the world). Simon and Emma discuss the interview with Johanna like they used to do in the original episodes on The Coaching Podcast.
Emma Doyle first met Johanna Konta when she was a young junior tennis player training at the National Academy in Melbourne as part of the TAP (targeted Athlete Project) program. Emma had the fortunate experience of working on court with Johanna was she was around 12 years of age and coaching her during the World Junior U14 teams event. Therefore, when Emma was in London in November of 2017 and they reconnected at the London National Training Centre, she took the opportunity to record this interview. Johanna talks about the importance of the coach being in 'partnership' with their athlete. What she looks for in a great coach is someone who is open-minded and who has strong values - values that align with her own. Johanna was one of the most hard-working, dedicated and professional players on the tour. She retired in December of 2021 and we wish her all the success in the world for the next chapter of her life. If you would like to go straight to the interview, start this episode at 12 minutes - it is another gold dust short yet impactful interview not to be missed.
Johanna Konta is a British former professional tennis player, having represented Australia until 2012. She won four singles titles on the WTA Tour, as well as 11 singles and four doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit. 08 Feb 2022Kim L. Miles - Great coaches focus on "accessing their intuition."00:27:30

Kim Miles and Emma Doyle connected through the ICF (International Coach Federation) Colorado chapter. Kim and Emma chat about so many coaching gold nuggets, like;

  • When you can get to the 'WHO' a person is, that is where the magic happens
  • As coaches, you can help express your client's inner voice with comments, such as;
  • "What I am hearing you say ..."
  • "You are using these words ..."
  • "Your body language is expressing this ... which is not in alignment with ..."
  • And pick up on their;
  • "Energy shifts."
  • "Presence and their being."
  • All of which helps your client to hear themselves and gain valuable insights around.

What does Kim think makes a great coach?
"Accessing your intuition." This was the through-line for this episode.
And she went on to say, "Being so incredibly present so that then you can access the deepest level of your client beyond what they are even accessing."
As for her 3 tops tips: 1) Coach More 2) Reflect More 3) Engage with other Coaches
May we all strive to gain coaching mastery in the present moment - the way of the future.
Kim Miles is an Executive Coach specializing in Leadership and Team Development. Kim partners with individual contributors, leaders, and executives to create a fulfilling career and life by supporting them in navigating external situations and internal mindset challenges. She has a master’s in organizational leadership and certifications in mentor coaching and team coaching. With 1,200+ hours of coaching working, Kim has worked with CEOs, CIOs, VPs, Presidents, Directors of Operations, managers and individual contributors in Fortune 100, midsized, and small organizations. Past clients worked in industries including telecommunications, energy, engineering consulting, marketing & advertising, and nonprofits. Clients describe Kim’s coaching style as practical/pragmatic, direct, and supportive. Throughout Kim’s 20+ year career, she served in a variety of organizations in roles including internal coach, leadership development specialist, project manager, corporate account manager, technical recruiter, project engineer, contracts coordinator, and program controls analyst.
Kim’s philosophy Your values not only indicate what is most important to you but also drive your behaviors and decision making to ultimately steer you in a specific direction. When your values aren’t aligned with the organization you are in, or the specific work you do, you find yourself off course. There is a sense of feeling lost or exhausted from navigating incredibly strong headwinds. My top values are empowerment and freedom (financial and time) which is why I love working with people who want to create alignment of their values with the work they do, so they are empowered to create a life and career they love.

01 Feb 2022Mike Digby - Young game changer coach; "There is no need to be in a rush"00:39:36

Mike Digby contacted Emma Doyle via Instagram as a passionate listener of The Coaching Podcast. Emma immediately wanted to have him on the show to ensure that young coaches have a voice in coaching and that "great minds don't always think alike." Mike believes that a great coach needs to be a great listener and Mike shares a great story about the first time he served as Roger Federer's hitting partner (the power of building relationships). One of the highlights of the show is when Mike shares his tips for young coaches;

1. Be eager to learn

2. There is no need to be in a rush

3. Be as organic as possible

In other words, take the knowledge from other great coaches and then adapt it within your personality. Wise words from a young game-changer. We can't wait to follow your coaching journey.

Mike Digby graduated college in America playing NCAA college tennis in 2019. He always wanted to be a pro tennis player but he found himself as a hitting partner with some of the best players in the world, such as Djokovic, Federer, and Halep at many of the biggest tournaments around the world.
After graduating, he was a full time hitting partner for a few players gaining vital experience working at the top end of the game and slowly being an assistant coach to a few top WTA players on the tour.

Whilst he was hitting with Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2019, he had a chat with the Director at Soto Tennis Academy, Dan Kiernan, about the academy and he offered Mike a chance to start his coaching career. He has now been in Spain for 1.5 years and he serves as a hitting partner for Matteo Berrettini (current ATP world No.8). In addition, he is a performance coach working with some of the best juniors and professionals in the world.

21 Dec 2021Louis Cayer - Have a clear vision on how you can bridge the gap00:08:33

Emma Doyle has followed Louis Cayer's coaching methodologies and attended many of his lectures over the years. When jumped at the opportunity to interview him when they both presented in London at the Lawn Tennis Association Coaches Conference right before Wimbledon in 2017.

In this episode, Louis talks about what makes a great coach - someone who cares and has a vision for the player. He said, "the player has a dream-goal vision. For me (as a coach) I have a process vision.’ And therefore, as a coach, ‘I need (to have) an awareness of standards, assess where they are, (and then focus on) how will I bridge the gap. And when I have a clear vision of how I can bridge that gap, I know very well that they will succeed and I share that belief with them.’

As a coach for over 44 years, Louis Cayer has made a name for himself in tennis here and abroad. He started out in the sport at 16 years old, working for the city of Montreal. In 1976, he pursued his career at the Club de tennis Îles des Soeurs, where he spent 30 years. Cayer has worked with nine Top 100 singles players and over 30 Top 100 doubles specialists. He coached the Canadian Davis Cup team from 1989 to 1993 and was team captain from 1994 to 2000. He also prepared Sébastien Lareau and Daniel Nestor for their quest for gold at the Sydney Olympics.

Cayer played a determining role in coach training in Canada. While earning his degree in education, he developed an actions oriented methodology that, in 1989, formed the educational framework for the Canadien tennis coaching certification system and led to the game-based approach promoted by the International Tennis Federation. He oversaw the national certification program from 1989 until his departure for Great Britain. A gifted speaker, Cayer has travelled to over 30 countries to take part in every ITF conference since 1987. In 2011, he was awarded the ITF Service to the Game award in recognition of his remarkable contribution to tennis. Since 2007, Cayer has lived in England and worked at the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) as the director of high-performance coaching. His collaborations with the British Fed Cup and Davis Cup teams were key to the nation’s success in doubles. In 2012, Cayer’s efforts helped Jonny Marray take the Wimbledon doubles crown after Britain’s 76-year wait.

Louis Cayer was inducted into the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the history of tennis in Canada.

16 Nov 2021Ric Charlesworth - “What might seem impossible and unlikely but if we did it, it would make a big difference?”00:04:55

Emma Doyle has long been a fan of Coach Ric Charlesworth after reading his book in her early coaching years called: The Coach - Managing for Success. Then in January of 2018, she had the pleasure of speaking at the Australian Open Grand Slam Coaches Conference alongside Ric Charlesworth. Of course, Emma will never die wondering and asking the question 'what if...' and so she jumped at the opportunity to interview him on The Coaching Podcast. In this episode, you will hear his honest account of his biggest coaching failure and such interesting sliding doors moments in his life. Finally, his question for The Coaching Podcast is one that we must always ask of ourselves, that is: “What might seem impossible and unlikely but if we did it, it would make a big difference?”

Read more about Ric Charlesworth's bio here:
“There is a difference between being tired, and exhausted.” A sentence which rings through when describing Ric Charlesworth, and his approach to sporting pursuits and life itself. Charlesworth is a sporting icon, both for his playing efforts and later his coaching successes. During his sport, he studied Medicine and worked in Politics, but he will forever be known as The Coach. He specialises in knowing what triggers people (himself included) to be the best, and be their best. After retiring from coaching the Kookaburras in 2014, Charlesworth continues to spend his time working, part-time motivational speaker and full-time Dad.
Sport – as a player: Charlesworth was an avid cricketer. He played for 8 years in the WA state team. But his first love was hockey, in the National team playing 18 years for WA, and National teams for 17 years. Throughout this period, he was selected for 5 and went to 4 Olympics with the Australian team.
It was here in his own sporting life that he learnt the difference between being tired, and exhausted. He learnt that if he could take anything from his own playing days, it would be that to be a good coach you must distinguish the difference between the two, and push people beyond what they thought was possible. "In my 14 years of coaching National teams, both men and women, I have never met a player who knew how good they could be."
Sport – as a coach: Charlesworth prided himself on preparation and being willing to try new ideas. Sometimes it is necessary to select based on attitude, rather than skill. A strong attitude ensures the individual has both the desire and ability to be pushed.
Hockeyroos coach for 8 years (1993-2000); 2 Olympic Gold medals & 2 World Cup Golds. They sat ranked #1 in the world for the entire period with Charlesworth as coach. Kookaburras coach for 6 years (2009-2014); Olympic Bronze, 2 World Cup Golds & Commonwealth Games titles.
He treated his coaching as an opportunity to elevate the sports ambitions of both himself, and others, placing emphasis on bettering the people he had and finding new and exciting talent. Adding value to the athletes and building depth in his squad. It was his background in medicine and politics that provided him with an unusual blend of expertise for his life as a coach.

09 Nov 2021Daniel Flynn - Find a coach or a mentor who can help you see your blind spots00:05:49

Emma Doyle had the pleasure of meeting a total young game-changer, in person, back in 2017 named Daniel Flynn. She was blown away and moved by his purpose for being on this planet. He reminds us all to find a mentor who can call you out on your blind spots and ask yourself the question - 'why are you here? What's your purpose?'

Be prepared to be inspired. Emma bought a copy of his book and his TEDx talk can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTZC6PmsqGI

About Daniel in his own words:
In 2008, I led a group of people who launched Thankyou and have seen it grow from a small start-up become one of Australia’s leading mainstream social enterprises.
12 years on, Thankyou’s products are stocked by major retailers in Australia, with every product contributing to helping end global poverty. To date, Thankyou has raised over $17 million to impact the lives of people across 22 countries.

In 2015 I had the privilege of writing a best-selling book, Chapter One, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx44cXeKC7s) a story that generated $1.4 million in sales in its first month using an unorthodox ‘pay-what-you-want’ model. I’m passionate about disruptive marketing and am honoured to have led our team to execute some truly unconventional and highly successful campaigns that led to Thankyou products being stocked by some of Australia’s biggest retailers.

As part of my role, I love to speak to audiences around the world, telling stories and motivating people to realise that they too can make their own ideas a reality.

20 Jul 2021Valorie Kondos Field - "Know thy self"00:45:11

Valorie Kondos Field and Emma Doyle met when they were both speakers at The Winning Summit. They instantly connected on many coaching levels and this episode is no different. There are so many pearls of wisdom to be heard and vulnerable moments shared straight from the heart. ENJOY!

Valorie is the retired head coach of the seven-time NCAA Champion, 22-time Regional and 18-time Pac 12 Champion UCLA Women’s Gymnastics team. Inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, the four-time “National Coach of the Year” was also named “West Region Coach” of the Year and Pac 12 “Coach of the Century” for her solid track record as a preeminent coach. Affectionately known by her gymnasts as “Miss Val,” her reputation is only one reason that 46 former US national team members came through her program and why half of the last two Olympic teams committed to UCLA. Valorie’s coaching success can be attributed to her extraordinary leadership and mentorship of young student-athletes, and the way in which she used gymnastics as an avenue through which to teach valuable life lessons, while encouraging individuality and joy.

Something Valorie learned from the late John Wooden, the legendary and most successful collegiate basketball coach of all time, who was one of her biggest inspirations, as well as a close mentor and friend. Valorie began her career as a professional ballet dancer and choreographer for the Washington, DC and Sacramento Ballet Companies. Although never a gymnast herself, she’s transferred to her student-athletes all she learned in the world of classical dance. The result of which resulted in nearly three decades of coaching one of the premier athletic programs in any sport, mentoring hundreds of elite athletes, including Olympic champions Simone Biles, Jordan Wieber, Kyla Ross, Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez and viral sensations Katelyn Ohashi and Nia Dennis, among others.

Also known as the nation’s foremost gymnastics choreographer, Miss Val’s many credits include choreographing and directing a myriad of live variety shows, such as the NCAA Opening Ceremonies for Women’s Basketball, a flash mob of famed female athletes and coaches at the inaugural Aurora Games, a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar roast, CBS’s “Jump, Jive & Thrive” Breast Cancer Research Foundation benefit, and 26 years of cirque-type shows for SeaWorld’s Summer Nights and the San Diego Zoo. Current projects include additional live stage shows, TV specials, events and the development of a theatrical musical, plus the highly anticipated post-Olympic “Gold Over America Tour” featuring an all-star team of female gymnastics champions, headlined by Simone Biles and also featuring Katelyn Ohashi, which will begin in Fall 2021 and is slated to visit more than 35 U.S. cities, celebrating powerful female athletes in a high-octane, fun-filled experience. She is a dynamic and charismatic speaker with an extensive schedule of “Corporate Coaching” events for national companies including JP Morgan Chase, General Electric, Gucci and Jackson National Life Insurance, and has contributed to various panel discussions including Bustle’s “Rule Breakers” and the ESPNW Summit. In her TEDWomen 2019 talk, Miss Val inspires people to reevaluate their definition of success. She maintains that real success is developing champions in life, and that in order to motivate success, we need to inspire those whom we lead without compromising the human spirit. As a recent breast cancer survivor, Valorie’s positive outlook and hope-filled message is impactful. She empowered her athletes to use their voices, to celebrate themselves, and to enjoy the elite sport that has damaged so many in the past.

She also shared her motivating and inspirational messages with the world, with her book, “LIFE IS SHORT, DON’T WAIT TO DANCE: Advice and Inspiration from the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame Coach of 7 NCAA Championship Teams,” which was released in Fall 2018 by the Hachette Book Group. It expounds on her life philosophy: “Don’t wait to see what life is going to hand you, take control of your life and design ~ choreograph it exactly how you want it to turn out.” In her free time, Valorie is active with the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation, LA 84 Olympic Foundation, WISE (Women In Sports & Events), BCRF (Breast Cancer Research Foundation), Unite For Her, and many other charitable organizations, close to her heart. She resides in Fayetteville, Arkansas with her husband, retired UCLA Football Coach, Bobby Field

13 Jul 2021Vlado Platenik - Empathy, passion, and knowledge Makes a Great Coach00:52:31

Are you curious to know more about how do you break free from the mass of wannabes and qualify for Wimbledon? If you answered yes to this question, then this episode on The Coaching Podcast is one not to be missed with Slovakian Coach, Vlado Platenik. What does Vlado think makes a great coach? Empathy, Passion, Knowledge!

In the glossy world of ‘Grand Slam’ tennis coaches, there are very few Grand Slam Development Tennis Coaches i.e. tennis coaches that work in the trenches taking ‘nobodies’ with no ranking points, no money, into ‘somebodies’ Top 100, Top 64… and beyond. A former professional tennis player from Slovak has taken four players from lower-ranking to Top 100 WTA, four players to Top 20 WTA. His players have qualified for more than sixty Grand Slam Tournaments and qualified for more than fifteen Wimbledon’s. Are there other coaches that can equal those results in developing young talent? Rather than coaching a player that’s already broken through.

Each player development process takes around three years of Vlado’s life dedicated to this one person. His current client is Veronika Kudermetova ranked 32. Vlado has now been on WTA Tour for twenty + years spending eleven months of the year away from his own family. There’s a Winning life off-court on tour and a Winning game on court on tour. And his teenage daughter (Ela Platenikova), schooled in Vlado’s ‘method’ also dreams of Wimbledon! She is 17 years old, number 2 in Slovakia in her age, playing ITF juniors and ITF women tournaments. Vlado's can be reached via his e-mail: platenik76@hotmail.com

08 Jul 2021Casey Dellacqua - A great coach is someone who is an effective communicator, demonstrates respect and has fun.00:14:43

What a real treat it is to have Casey Dellacqua on The Coaching Podcast. Emma Doyle has known Casey for many years and watched her development closely over the years. In this episode, she talks about the Wimbledon semi-final matchups as well as the importance of keeping tennis fun. What does Casey think makes a great coach? Someone who is an effective communicator, demonstrates respect and has fun.

Casey Dellacqua retired from professional tennis in 2018 as one of Australia’s most popular and classy representatives. The West Australian was an integral member of the Australian Fed Cup team and a dual Olympian. Dellacqua first captured the nation’s heart when she made her Australian Open debut as a 17-year-old in 2003.

Dellacqua joined the world’s top 50 for the first time in 2008 following a breakthrough Australian Open where she made the fourth round. Shoulder and foot surgeries in 2009 and 2010 halted her progress before the left-hander returned in 2011, winning six ITF Pro Circuit titles in a row, as well as the French Open Mixed doubles title with American Scott Lipsky. Dellacqua enjoyed enormous success on the women’s doubles tour and was ranked as high as number three in the world. She made the 2008 French Open final with Francesca Schiavone, and was a finalist with a close friend and now world No.1 Ash Barty at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, all in 2013.
Dellacqua rose to a career-high singles ranking of 26 in 2014. A fall at the China Open in 2015 left Dellacqua with concussion symptoms that lasted for more than a year and led to the end of her singles career. She eventually left the game to spend more time with her growing family before being honoured with the Spirit of Tennis Award at the end of 2018.

Dellacqua is now a respected commentator and is passionate about growing and developing the game in Australia through mentoring and coaching.

Emma Interviews Motivational Speakers, Commentators and recent Authors on how to deal with issues facing Teenagers and Families, Sonya Karras & Sacha Kaluri. Check out this cool episode with lots of laughs and serious questions:
Sacha Kaluri – When you are frightened, and you feel like, 'I don't know if I can do that' what tips you over the edge that makes you say, 'Yes I can'? Sonya Karras – How do you handle the 'No's?
Check out their book - The Two Worlds of Your Teenager
Over the past 17 years, Sonya Karras and Sacha Kaluri have been working with teenagers on a daily basis. They understand that while teenagers experience many changes in their lives, there are two big areas that come into full bloom at about the same time as each other: social life and thoughts about a career path. Sonya and Sacha are experts in these two areas. They believe it’s the parent’s job to be well prepared for this often confusing time in their teenager’s life. Then when your children really need help they will confidently come to you, their parents, because you understand what’s really going on. The purpose is to make sure the forever-widening gap between teens and their parents becomes narrower and narrower. Sonya and Sacha have made it their life’s mission to engage and connect with teenagers on a daily basis to guide them in these areas. They believe the more choices, options and information a teenager is given, the more likely they are to make positive choices, especially when faced with a tricky situation. Their fun, down-to-earth manner readily connects with parents and teens, and makes this an engaging and informative read.

27 Apr 2017Judy Murray01:01:58
Emma Doyle interviews the most famous tennis mum in the world and a champion of girls and women's tennis, Judy Murray. Judy and Emma have a wonderful friendship and coach relationship focusing on empowering the next generation of women in coaching.
Scottish tennis coach and motivational speaker, Judy Murray OBE, is no stranger to cultivating success in others. The mother of Andy and Jamie Murray, two incredibly successful tennis players, Judy is an expert in inspiring greatness in others. As a motivational speaker, she discusses her experience of tennis growing up, from playing outside in the summer to Badminton in the winter because there was no outside tennis court. In her personal sporting career, Judy earned over 60 titles before retiring to study French and Business Studies at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1981. Judy was famed for her calculated, quick thinking playing style, easily outwitting her competition.
After representing Great Britain at the 1981 World Students Games, Judy turned her talent to coaching her sons. Once she established a foundation of skill, Andy and Jamie transferred to a professional coach - but their mother was never too far away, on the sidelines offering inspiring and supportive comments. Judy continues to coach future tennis champions, at both regional and national level.
As a testament to her coaching ability, Judy was chosen to lead the British Fed Cup team as their captain. Judy flourished in this role, but she also had another incentive - to raise awareness of female coaches. Commonly unrepresented, Judy tackled sexism in sports head-on by proving that female tennis coaches are just as capable as male coaches.
In recognition of her contribution to tennis, female empowerment and charity fundraising, Judy was appointed OBE in 2017. An advocate for the power of sport, she founded the Judy Murray Foundation, a charity that improves the opportunities for tennis in Scotland. As a speaker, Judy is an expert in high-performance teams so can motivate positive workplace culture for her audiences.

Coaching, training, and development support increase workforce engagement, productivity, collaboration, trust, and resilience...and makes work more enjoyable and fulfilling for all. 22 Mar 2022#87: Ema Burgic Bucko - The hard truth about becoming a tennis player 00:52:30

The Coaching Podcast is committed to promoting young game-changers and this week we have an exceptional story from former professional tennis player from Bosnia, Ema Burgic Bucko. Ema's story, growing up during the 'war' in Bosnia, is honest, vulnerable, and one that is often not shared within the tennis coaching industry. We appreciate the fact that Ema was willing to open up her heart, mind and soul during this episode because tennis can be a lonely sport. You will hear about Ema's pivotal sliding doors moments, the toll of injuries from overtraining and the importance of finding the right fit for your US College tennis experience.

Now that Ema is a Tennis Coach, she believes that there is no one way to coach and her top three great coaching qualities include:

  1. Energy - You have to role model the energy you wish to see in your players
  2. Connection - You have to build honest and trustworthy relationships
  3. Communication - It must be a two-way street. Your players must feel comfortable discussing their game with you.

Will Ema coach her own children? You will have to listen to the episode to learn more!

On a side note, Emma Doyle & Ema Burgic Bucko have partnered together to bring you ACE Coach. ACE Coach is a membership site filled with hundreds of tennis videos to improve your playing game or your coaching, and even your parenting (how to practice with your child). Together they bring youth and wisdom together adding great value to the content every month. If you are interested in discovering what they have put together - click here: Learn More

Ema Burgic Bucko grew up in a small village in Bosnia and picked a racquet for the first time when she was aged 6. From her first tennis experience, Ema was unable to put the racquet down and set her mind on becoming the best tennis player that she could be. From a young age, she experienced first-hand overseas success that soon had her climb up the International junior rankings becoming the U12, 14, 16 and 18's National Champion in Bosnia. She was ranked No. 1 in Europe for under 16’s and even won her first WTA Tour event at the age of 16 years. Growing up, training, and competing on the red clay courts of Europe, Ema’s game was built around long points, a relentless competitive drive, and her determination to never give up. She trained for many hours with some of the best players in the world and it was this time at a Spanish Tennis Academy that, unfortunately, her body began to break down and her career would be interrupted from this moment on with numerous injuries.

Despite this, Ema decided to play US College Tennis before turning pro as she valued the importance of getting an education.  During her time at Baylor University, Ema was a 7 time all-American, big 12 conference player of the year and she was ranked No. 4 (singles) and No. 5 (doubles) in the Nation (NCAA Division 1).  She did all of this while balancing injuries that required surgery, with studying to complete her degree in accounting. With was not easy and Ema is a positive voice for change and an advocate for athletes who also go through mental health challenges. Post College, Ema went on to play on the tour for a couple of years. She played Fed Cup for Bosnia and reached a career-high doubles ranking of WTA No. 140.

After considering a career in the accounting world, Ema realized that her passion was and has always been in tennis. Specifically, she believes in helping people of all ages and standards get better every day. During the Global pandemic, Ema started her Instagram page, ‘@TennisWithEma’ that has over <insert> number of followers who are passionate tennis players and coaches. The reason her page has been so successful is that Ema brings to life technical and tactical concepts in a simple and easy to digest way. Her videos are fun, catchy, creative and most of all help players get better faster. Emma believes;

“You can’t improve everything, every day, but you can improve something today. With the bigger picture in mind, setting clear goals, day in and day out, is the process mindset that creates incremental improvement.

I believe that there is no one way of coaching that fits all. You have to meet the player where they are. You are coaching different players, with different personalities and backgrounds, and they all have different challenges within the various stages in their life.

It's a very interesting job that changes every day.

I love what I do, and I am passionate about teaching this beautiful sport to anyone who wants to learn it. I don’t care if the student is a 5-year-old kid or a 70-year-old adult, I don’t care if it’s a beginner who has never gripped a racket before or an ATP/WTA pro player, I will teach them with the same passion.”

Ema is a USPTA ELITE Qualified Professional who cares deeply about bringing the Eastern European ‘hard working’ philosophy to the US and combining this with the joy that the game of tennis can bring to so many lives. She is married to a fellow tennis player, Atilla Bucko, and she has two children, Teo and Aston. Tennis is in their family and she wants to share her love of the game with the entire world.

Emma Doyle first met Chris Kachel in 2004 when they were both team managers and coaches for the U18 Tennis Victorian State teams. Emma was a young coach wanting to learn as much as possible from Chris and her journey down this path continues. Here are some of the highlights from this episode:

19 Apr 2022#91: Chris Anstey - "The work you do in the dark will become apparent in the light."00:57:34

Our guest this week is former professional basketball player Chris Anstey. Chris and our host, Emma Doyle grew up playing tennis together from the age of 10 at Maribyrnong Park Tennis Club. They have remained very close mates ever since. Emma seized the opportunity to interview Chris when he recently visited her in Denver, Colorado while on a tour to the US to watch his daughter, Izzy Anstey, who plays for the UCLA basketball team. Please find below some of the highlights that you will hear about coaching for success in sport and the workplace.

  • Worse Coaching Moment – when you are ‘trying’ to 'show' your ability to coach.

  • Anything you accept and walk past on day one of your coaching job, you need to accept for the duration of your tenure.

  •  Coaching Women’s Sports – Educate your female players to hold tightly those people who compliment you and the positive affirmations you get.

  •  Embrace differences – don’t just do things because other people have always done them.

  •  Find time in everything you do to invest in yourself.

  •  You can’t be motivated every day but what you can have are incredible habits and behaviours.

  •  Are you prepared to get a little uncomfortable even though you don’t know what the outcome is going to be yet?

  •  How do you deal with a superstar within a team – “I always coach the best player the hardest.”

  •  Statistics should be used like a lamppost, for support, not illumination.”

  •  You have to build a culture around people, not around the data.

  •  Parents – “Let the coach, coach.”

  •  Don’t only coach the what, coach the why? Athletes and team members want to know the why.

Chris Anstey is a father of three, and a former professional basketball player, whose 17-year career included stints in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Russia and Spain.

A 2-time Olympian, World Champion and World Championship MVP, Chris also played for the Melbourne Tigers, South East Melbourne Magic, and Victoria Titans in the Australian NBL. He retired as a 2-time Championship winning captain and MVP, with 3 NBL titles to his name. He became the Melbourne Tigers head coach in 2012.

Anstey was selected at #18 in the 1997 NBA Draft, becoming the first player in history to be drafted from Australia’s NBL. Chris has coached male and female basketball teams at all levels- professional, world and national championships, state, high school, and club.
