30 May 2022035 The Role of Coaching in Mental Health00:24:17

In this week’s episode we are talking about the role of coaching in mental health. It is a huge part of our mission to support everyday mental health in a proactive way and we know that many coaches are nervous about the role coaching can play in mental health so in this episode we want to help coaches, and leaders, understand how coaching can confidently support everyday wellbeing. We will be covering:

  • Understanding what mental health is
  • The continuum of mental health
  • How to hold a safe space in your coaching practice when it comes to mental health
  • Working within your zone of competence
  • When coaching is appropriate and not appropriate in this context
  • How we can support people to resource themselves
  • When it is the right time to refer on to a specialist and when we can work as a coach at the same time as specialist involvement
Coaching can be very positive for someone’s mental health as long as you understand what the person needs and work within your own sphere of experience.

22 May 2023090 Coaching in Nature00:20:06

In this week's episode we would like to open your thinking about where and how you coach. We have a number of graduates who now coach out in nature and we would love to share this concept with you.

We discuss:

  • how can you coach differently
  • how can you have coaching conversations in different ways
  • the ways in which our clients may need support to move away from the desks and screens when their intentions to do so become a challenge for them
  • moving the focus to tailoring the coaching experience to the individual
  • how we ourselves have experienced being coached in nature in different ways
  • how being in nature can ingnite new thinking, ideas and perspectives
  • what are the practicalities you need to consider before moving your sessions outdoors

Coaching differently outdoors can bring so many benefits to your clients. It also allows us the freedom to uncage ourselves as coaches. So, have you thought about how you could bring this into your coaching? Would it work for you and your coachees? This option for sessions is so flexible and brings a real opportunity for creativity in the process.

09 Jan 2023071 Coaching Imposter Syndrome00:23:34

In this week's episode we are talking about something that we hear about a lot from our coachees but also from our coaches. We wonder if it’s something that you might have experienced too. Let’s explore imposter syndrome and how we coach through this.

We discuss:

  • The universal experience that is felt through imposter syndrome
  • How we can, as coaches, to be triggered into feeling like an imposter
  • What can make us feel like an imposter?
  • Is the word syndrome an accurate representation of what is happening?
  • The role emotions play in our coaching conversations
  • How can we support our clients to find learning rather than lean into an imposter identity
  • The role of radical self acceptance

As coaches there are many ways that we can coach our clients through these feelings of being an imposter. We can become skillful at helping them to explore these different avenues and our first step is to have a true understanding of what we are really talking about when it comes to imposter syndrome.

03 Mar 2025183 Coaching and Visualisation00:19:11

How can visualisation unlock deeper insights for your coaching clients?

In this episode, we explore the powerful role that visualisation plays in coaching. Whether it’s a grounding exercise at the start of a session, a guided journey to explore emotions, or a visioning tool for goal achievement, visualisation is a technique that can transform client experiences.

We share how visualisation works, why it engages the subconscious mind, and how coaches can introduce it confidently. Many clients find visualisation helps them access different perspectives and unlock creative thinking. However, as coaches, it’s important to introduce it in a way that aligns with the client’s needs and learning style.

We also discuss practical considerations, such as whether to turn off cameras during virtual sessions, how to adjust visualisation for different clients, and why your confidence in delivering it matters just as much as the script itself. By the end of this episode, you’ll have the tools and inspiration to incorporate visualisation into your coaching practice in a way that feels natural, ethical, and impactful.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Use Visualisation in Coaching

  1. Set the Context for the Visualisation

o   Explain to the client how visualisation works and its purpose in coaching.

o   Ensure they feel comfortable with the technique and give them the option to opt out.

  1. Choose the Right Type of Visualisation

o   Short grounding exercises (e.g., breathing and body awareness) help clients settle into a session.

o   Longer guided visualisations can be used to explore emotions, values, or future goals.

o   Spontaneous visualisation can be woven into conversations (e.g., "Close your eyes and picture yourself stepping into this scenario. What do you notice?").

  1. Create a Safe and Comfortable Space

o   Ask the client to find a comfortable position (seated or lying down).

o   If virtual, discuss turning off cameras to help the client relax.

o   Ensure they are in a warm, distraction-free environment.

  1. Guide the Visualisation with Confidence

o   Use a calm and steady tone, adjusting pace and intonation for effect.

o   Focus on sensory details—sight, sound, touch, smell—to deepen the experience.

o   Allow pauses for reflection, giving the client time to absorb the journey.

  1. Invite Reflection and Integration

o   Gently bring the client back to the present and allow space for reflection.

o   Ask questions like "What insights did you gain?" or "How did that experience feel?"

o   Encourage them to take notes or journal if helpful.

  1. Adapt Visualisation to the Client's Learning Style

o   Visual thinkers may love detailed imagery, while non-visual learners may prefer body-based awareness exercises.

o   Offer alternative ways to engage (e.g., audio-based imagery or metaphor-based questions).

  1. Debrief and Apply the Learning

o   Help the client translate insights into actionable steps.

o   Ask, "How can you use this experience to move towards your goal?"

o   Acknowledge if the visualisation wasn’t impactful—learning from that experience is still valuable.

Key Lessons Learned

  1. Visualisation is a flexible tool – It can be a short grounding exercise or a deep guided journey.
  2. Confidence in delivery matters – The way you introduce it influences how the client engages.
  3. Not all clients are visual learners – Be adaptable and offer different sensory-based approaches.
  4. Creating the right setting is crucial – Comfort, warmth, and a sense of safety enhance effectiveness.
  5. Visualisation can reveal subconscious insights – It helps clients access deeper wisdom beyond logical thinking.
  6. It’s an invitation, not a requirement – Clients should always feel free to stop at any point.
  7. Practice helps coaches refine their skills – The more you use visualisation, the more natural it becomes.

Key Takeaways

  • Introduce visualisation with confidence—your belief in the process helps the client engage.
  • Use sensory details—sight, sound, touch, and emotions—to deepen the experience.
  • Create a safe and comfortable environment—clients should feel relaxed and free from distractions.
  • Always debrief afterwards—help clients extract meaning and practical steps from their experience.
  • Experiment and refine your approach—each client will respond differently, so stay flexible.

04 Apr 2022027 Goal Setting in Coaching00:18:12

In today's episode we are exploring how to use goals in coaching.

Goals are a fundamental pillar of coaching and the coaching relationship. Some people will be very clear on their goals while others will have less clarity and either of these positions work well in a coaching session.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Why working with goals is important
  • How you can approach goal setting in different waysThe difference between a symptom goal and a cause goal
  • The difference between comfort, stretch and panic in goal setting
  • How the fear of failure can impact goal setting
  • Is it possible to move away from SMART goals?
  • The importance of a coach and coachee working in partnership to set goals

It's thought that people come to coaching because of goals they want to achieve but really people come to coaching because of how they feel. Emotions are integral to powerful coaching

30 Oct 2023113 How Do You Know If You are Coaching?00:19:38

In this week’s episode we are discussing how you know when you’re coaching. Now this might seem like a simple question but depending on how experienced we are and possibly the position we are in this can become trickier.

We will discuss:

- the difference between directive and non-directive coaching
- what is the unlearning phase of coaching
- why a coaching conversation sounds different to a normal conversation
- content free coaching
- detaching from the outcome

There are so many types of conversations you can have with your client. We encourage you to explore them so that you can begin to notice them. How do you notice when you are coaching and when perhaps you are stepping into a different type of conversation with your client?

06 Nov 2023114 5 Reasons to Self Fund Your Coaching Qualification00:18:31

In this week’s episode we are discussing self funding your coaching course. We have had a number of conversations with people who are considering self funding and we wanted to explore 5 reasons why you might self fund your qualification.

We discuss:

  • When is it better to hold out for your employer to fund your qualification?

  • What does self funding give you?

  • Is training alongside your colleagues what you want to do?

  • Why self funding enables you to come to a course as who you are not what you do

  • How to look at the course as an investment rather than a cost?

  • Adding an additional income into the household pot through your coaching qualification

There is no right or wrong way to fund your coaching qualification. We understand that everyone has to make individual decisions about how to spend their money. In making these decisions it’s important to truly understand what you will gain from the investment. So if you are considering self funding your course then do get in touch with us to discuss your options.

Inspired by the idea of Christmas crackers but swapping out cheesey jokes for meaningful questions, we pair reflection with forward-thinking, encouraging listeners to pause, reflect, and plan.

The episode begins with a question about what has influenced you this year—whether people, events, or personal experiences—and pairs it with a forward-looking prompt: Who am I becoming? Drawing on vivid metaphors of life paths, we invite listeners to consider whether they are following familiar routes, veering off onto less-trodden trails, or creating entirely new pathways.

Listeners are then asked to explore their world work—the contribution they’ve made, whether large or small, to the world around them. we emphasise that world work doesn’t need to be grandiose; acts of kindness, caregiving, and listening all count. This reflection naturally flows into the forward-looking question: What is the world calling you to do?

A deeper emotional exploration comes next: What have you denied yourself this year? From experiences to emotions like joy or anxiety, we highlight the importance of identifying unconscious denials and bringing them into awareness. The follow-up question, What will you allow or welcome in next year?, encourages listeners to grant themselves permission to embrace what truly matters.

Finally, the episode turns toward gratitude. Listeners reflect on what and who they are most grateful for and are challenged to consider how they will share that gratitude in the year ahead. From personal stories of transformative gratitude to ideas about paying it forward, we remind everyone that gratitude, when shared, becomes even more powerful.

As the year closes, this episode is a reflective companion for anyone seeking clarity, growth, and intention for the new year.

The 8 End-of-Year Coaching Questions

  1. What has influenced me this year?
  2. Who am I becoming?
  3. What world work have I done this year?
  4. What is the world calling me to do?
  5. What have I denied myself this year?
  6. What will I allow or welcome in next year?
  7. What and who am I most grateful for this year?
  8. How will I share my gratitude in the year ahead?

In this Episode you will Learn:

  1. Reflection unlocks clarity: Pausing to review the past year helps identify influences and set intentional goals for the future.
  2. Small contributions matter: “World work” can be simple acts of kindness, caregiving, or listening.
  3. Awareness changes patterns: Recognizing what you’ve denied yourself allows for conscious choices moving forward.
  4. Gratitude is grounding and powerful: Sharing gratitude amplifies its impact and fosters connection.
  5. Intention shapes who you become: By asking who you choose to be, you align actions with desired growth.

08 Aug 2022049 Coaching Perfectionism00:24:19

In this week's episode we are talking about coaching perfectionism. The word perfectionist is a label we give to ourselves and it can see our coachees putting pressure on themselves to deliver a perfect result. Sometimes a coachee might know that it is perfectionism that needs to be explored and others might have no awareness. So let's start to highlight this issue that can show up in our coaching sessions.

We discuss:

  • how perfectionism can show up in someone
  • how as a coach you can spot signs of perfectionism in your coachee
  • what might a coachee say to indicate they are a perfectionist?
  • are there elements of strength within perfectionism
  • where the need to be perfect derives from
  • what is the purpose of the perfect driver and how can your client find other ways to meet that need?
  • the impact it can have on work and personal relationships

We may not be able to provide you with a series of tools to work with a coachee who is a perfectionist but we are able to raise your awareness of how it might show up in your coachee. In reality being present with your coachee and enabling them to discover their own solutions is the most effective way to support your coachee with perfectionism.

20 Jun 2022039 Creating a Coaching Culture00:20:50

In this week's episode we are talking about creating coaching cultures within organisations. We know that many people who want to train as coaches today are doing so to have an impact at work and support their organisations in creating a culture where people are empowered and supported.

We cover:

- What the phrase ‘coaching culture’ means

- The reasons why an organisation could benefit

- What a coaching culture might bring to the organisation

- How a coaching culture can empower employees

- Who benefits from this

- What it takes to instill such a culture

Developing a coaching culture can be incredibly empowering for an organisation, its leadership team and employees. It isn’t a one size fits all approach but neither is coaching. Coaching training can support leaders to begin to bring this ethos within their organisation and make powerful change happen.

01 Aug 2022048 Building Confidence as a Coach00:22:57

In this week's episode we are discussing how you can build your confidence as a coach. We know that it can be something new coaches struggle with as we have been there ourselves and we hear it from our trainee coaches.

We will discuss:

  • the transition from feeling like an expert in your field which builds your confidence to being a coach drawing on a different set of skills
  • the idea that you don’t need to be the expert as a coach
  • the worry new coaches have about wondering what question they should ask next in a coaching session
  • not needing to have planned out your whole client session
  • that it is supportive to sit in discomfort and the feeling of not knowing with your client
  • what preparation can you do?
  • the tools that are powerful for coaches such as reflection, CPD opportunities and supervision
  • how can perfectionism impact confidence levels?

It is a normal and natural process as you grow in to a new role as a coach that you find ways to develop your confidence. Sometimes we need to look for the evidence that tells us we are developing confidence to support further growth. With practice, support and clarity you can build your confidence.

20 Mar 2023081 How Do I Know If My Coaching Is Valuable?00:15:47

In this week's episode we are thinking about a question that was raised in a supervision session, how do you know if your coaching is valuable?

We discuss:

  • what do the words value and valuable really mean to both you as the coach and your coachee
  • how to begin to discuss value in the chemistry conversation
  • gaining feedback from your client
  • ways to measure value
  • how can you keep pace with your client and what their outcomes are
  • are you giving your client time to experience the value of your sessions
  • what might trigger questions around value?

Value can be a complex thing to measure or it can be simple depending upon the situation. The key is determining whether the value conversation is important to you as the coach or to your coachee or maybe even both of you. How do you determine value from your coaching?

20 Jan 2025177 How to Coach Fear00:21:43

How do you help someone move forward when fear is holding them back?

In this episode, we explore how to recognise, name, and coach fear in a way that empowers clients to navigate their emotions and achieve meaningful progress.

Fear often shows up in coaching sessions, sometimes explicitly but often disguised as procrastination, indecision, or avoidance.

We dive into practical strategies to coach fear, starting with helping clients name their emotions and connect them to the gap between where they are and where they want to be.

We share real-life examples of how fear shows up, like hesitation about applying for a promotion or anxiety about a major life decision, and how we’ve guided clients through these moments using exploratory questions, visioning, and emotional sequencing.

Coaching fear isn’t just about solving a problem; it’s about unlocking self-awareness and building emotional agility. We discuss how to engage with emotions as allies rather than obstacles and explore ways to help clients see fear as a guide rather than a barrier.

Whether you're a coach or someone looking to understand fear better, this episode will provide you with practical tools to deepen your emotional exploration.

Steps to Coach Fear and Emotions

  1. Recognise and Name the Emotion
    • Ask questions like, What are you feeling about this? or share observations: I sense there may be fear here—does that resonate?
  2. Explore the Gap Between Current and Desired States
    • Help clients identify the emotional gap between where they are and where they want to be.
  3. Unpack Emotional Layers
    • Ask deeper questions: What’s beneath this fear? or What happens if you move past it?
  4. Use Visioning Techniques
    • Guide clients to imagine the best-case scenario. What will you see, hear, or feel when you achieve this?
  5. Examine Emotional Sequences
    • Explore what emotions follow fear. What do you typically feel after fear, and what would you prefer to feel instead?
  6. Give the Emotion a Voice
    • Encourage clients to dialogue with their fear: If this fear could talk, what would it say? What does it need?
  7. Reframe Fear as a Friend
    • Ask, What if fear is here to guide you? How could it help you achieve your goal?
  8. Check for Alignment
    • Ensure the goal aligns with the client’s values, resources, and readiness to act.

Key Lessons Learned

  1. Fear often masks deeper emotions, like insecurity or doubt.
  2. Recognising and naming emotions is the first step to transformation.
  3. Emotions are not obstacles—they are guides that reveal what’s truly important.
  4. Exploring emotional sequences can help clients build self-awareness and resilience.
  5. Aligning goals with emotions and values creates a roadmap for progress.

Key Takeaways

  • Use curiosity to explore fear as a gateway to deeper self-awareness.
  • Guide clients to see fear not as a blocker but as a source of valuable information.
  • Engage emotions in a structured way, using tools like emotional sequencing or visioning.
  • Create a safe space for clients to unpack their emotions without judgment.
  • Apply these steps to your own fears for personal growth and clarity.

10 Mar 2025184 How to Coach Burnout00:20:43

How do you support coaching clients who are struggling with burnout?

In this episode, we explore how to recognise burnout in clients, the different ways burnout manifests, and how coaching can (and can’t) support clients experiencing it. Many people believe burnout is simply about working too much, but it often stems from deep-seated patterns, emotional exhaustion, and values misalignment.

We discuss the two types of clients experiencing burnout; those approaching burnout, and those fully in burnout, and why traditional coaching techniques work better for the former than the latter.

We explore common coaching red flags, like when a client repeatedly turns up to sessions flustered, struggling to take action, or feeling like they’re "just getting through the day."

One of the key takeaways from this episode is that coaching burnout is not about quick fixes, it’s about helping clients build self-awareness, boundaries, and sustainable habits. We also touch on the ethical considerations of coaching burnout, when to refer clients to professional support, and how coaches themselves can avoid burnout in their own practice.

Whether you're a coach supporting clients through burnout or someone who wants to prevent it in your own life, this episode is packed with insights, reflections, and practical coaching approaches.

Five Coaching Questions to Support Clients with Burnout

  1. What is draining your energy the most right now?
  2. What boundaries would help protect your wellbeing?
  3. If you gave yourself permission to rest, what would that look like?
  4. What beliefs do you hold about productivity and self-worth?
  5. What’s one small step you can take this week to prioritise your health?

Key Lessons Learned

  1. Burnout isn’t just about working too hard – It’s often a result of long-term emotional strain or values misalignment.
  2. Coaching works best for clients approaching burnout – Those in deep burnout may need medical or therapeutic support first.
  3. Recognising patterns is key – Burnout happens slowly over time, often due to repeated behaviours like people-pleasing.
  4. Rest is a form of self-leadership – Helping clients reframe rest as productive can be life-changing.
  5. Coaches need to prevent their own burnout too – Shifting to group coaching or adjusting workload can help.

Key Takeaways

  • Burnout isn’t a weakness—it’s a sign that something needs to change.
  • Coaching should feel supportive, not like another task—check in with clients about what they need.
  • Small shifts are powerful—help clients focus on sustainable changes, not drastic transformations.
  • Coaches can burn out too—self-awareness and boundaries are crucial for long-term success.

Timestamps

  • 00:13 – 00:46: Introduction; why burnout is a critical coaching topic
  • 00:47 – 02:07: The difference between approaching burnout and full burnout
  • 02:34 – 03:55: Why burnout often goes unnoticed until it’s too late
  • 04:21 – 05:44: Recognising signs of burnout in coaching clients
  • 06:13 – 07:39: Common causes of burnout; external vs. internal factors
  • 08:09 – 09:34: The ethics of coaching burnout—when to refer a client for professional support

06 Feb 2023075 How to Build Rapport00:21:49

In this week's episode we are talking about building rapport with your coaching clients. We get asked about this alot so thought it would be a good subject to address as rapport building looks quite different when developing it personally rather than professionally.

We discuss:

  • what rapport is and the role it plays when coaching
  • when rapport building begins
  • where rapport is built
  • how it is built through tone of voice and body language to name a few
  • the role of curiosity, listening and deep inquiry
  • how important calibration is to rapport building
  • the power of rapport with self

Rapport is an important part of the coaching relationship and needs to be considered in every second of the coaching session and we can understand that the rapport building process can begin long before a person even becomes a client. So, intentionally building rapport at all stages of the process is so important.

12 Sep 2022054 Emotions Coaching Demo00:26:18

In this week's episode we are demonstrating how to coach emotions. We have chosen to demo this because many coaches and aspiring coaches struggle to know what good coaching looks like and also what you can achieve in a session.

In this session you will hear:

- Jo coach Zoe around her emotions on a specific subject

- tools that can be used and hearing them in the session itself

- how to use clean language questions

- how you can blend tools in a session

- it is possible to be playful in a coaching session

- the clarity that can be found in a short session

Some coaches are concerned about coaching around emotions but we can coach emotions that are very accessible. We coach everyday, healthy emotions so we don't need to avoid these situations.

27 Jun 2022041 Leader and Manager as Coach00:20:42

In today’s episode we are exploring the role of managers and leaders as a coach and the impact it can have on both employees and the organisation. We have trained many managers and leaders to be coaches but what impact can it have?

We cover:

  • why managers and leaders want to train as a coach
  • what impact do the coaching skills gained have for both the organisation and employees
  • how this approach can grow leaders at all levels
  • how managers and leaders can find the part of their role that feels meaningful
  • how this coaching role can promote growth even when a person is not looking to climb the corporate ladder.

Managers and leaders can make such an impact at all levels of their organisation through coaching. This doesn’t always need to be in a formal coaching container and can promote resilience, growth and solid foundation in which to work.

13 Jan 2025176 Well Formed Coaching Outcomes00:21:52

As we settle into the new year, we dive into a powerful tool from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) that’s designed to help you set well-formed coaching outcomes. Whether you're supporting clients or working on your personal goals, this structured approach helps ensure goals are both achievable and meaningful.

In this episode, we reflect on the importance of setting goals that are fully within our control. Many of us—and our clients—fall into the trap of creating goals tied to external factors, like a promotion or financial gain, which often leads to stress and frustration. Instead, we focus on crafting goals that are actionable, inspiring, and fully achievable.

We guide you step-by-step through a framework of eight essential questions that can help create clarity and motivation. These questions can be used in coaching sessions to transform vague aspirations into tangible, inspiring outcomes. Jo shares how small language shifts—like reframing a client’s "I don’t want" statement into "I want"—can unlock surprising insights. We also discuss how vividly imagining success can ignite energy and motivation, making the goal feel within reach.

As coaches, our job isn’t just to help clients dream big but to anchor those dreams into practical steps that fit their values, resources, and reality. Along the way, we share examples from our sessions, like how sensory-based questions—“What will you hear when you succeed?”—can reveal unexpected details that deepen a client’s connection to their goal.

The conversation ends with a reminder to apply these questions to your own life. As we step into 2025, how might you create well-formed outcomes for yourself?

Steps to Create a Well-Formed Coaching Outcome

  1. What do you want?
Use positive, future-focused language to articulate the goal. Avoid framing it around what you don’t want.
  2. Is it achievable?
Ensure the goal is realistic and assess whether it’s within the client’s capabilities or requires additional steps, like research or skill-building.
  3. What will you accept as evidence that you’ve achieved your outcome?
Help the client create a sensory-rich picture of success—what they will see, feel, hear, or experience upon achieving the goal.
  4. Is achieving this outcome within your control?
Reframe goals that rely on external factors to focus on actions the client can directly control.
  5. Are the costs and consequences of obtaining this outcome acceptable?
Assess the broader impact of the goal—on relationships, finances, time, and values—to ensure alignment.
  6. Do you have all the resources you need to achieve your outcome?
Explore tangible (tools, finances) and intangible (beliefs, knowledge) resources required for success.
  7. Does achieving this outcome fit with your values?
Goals misaligned with values are difficult to achieve. Ensure the goal resonates with the client’s core beliefs.
  8. If you could have it now, would you take it?
A final check to confirm the goal is authentic and deeply desired by the client.

Key Lessons Learned

  • Goals framed in positive language create focus and direction.
  • Clear evidence of success helps align the mind with the outcome.
  • Control over the goal eliminates unnecessary anxiety and builds confidence.
  • Exploring costs and values ensures sustainable, meaningful goals.
  • Asking sensory-based questions deepens the client’s emotional connection to the goal.

Key Takeaways

  • Use the seven steps as a framework for personal or client goal-setting.
  • Focus on what’s within your control to reduce stress and increase motivation.
  • Ensure alignment with values to maintain commitment and energy.
  • Leverage visualisation and sensory cues to amplify connection to the goal.
  • Don’t fear revisiting steps; refining a goal is progress, not failure.

14 Apr 2025189 10 Essential Coaching Skills00:26:46

What does it take to truly transform conversations and empower clients as a coach?

In this episode we unpack the essential coaching skills that every great coach should cultivate.

These aren’t the conventional techniques you’ll find in a competency framework; they’re the often-overlooked yet powerful capabilities that create truly impactful and transformative coaching experiences. Join us as we share insights and personal reflections from our own coaching journeys, exploring both the obvious and under-the-radar skills that can elevate your coaching practice.

As we kick off the conversation, we reflect on what makes the art of coaching so unique. One of the first skills we explore is attunement and loving presence—the ability to tune into a client’s energy, emotions, and worldview. This skill allows coaches to create a safe, intimate space where clients can open up, share their vulnerabilities, and feel fully seen. We recount how, over time, we’ve learned to attune to the “energy field” of our clients, connecting with their inner worlds in deeply meaningful ways.

Next, we delve into pattern spotting, a skill that extends beyond just noticing what clients say in the moment. It’s about drawing connections across multiple conversations and identifying themes that clients themselves may not yet recognise. We share how this skill enhances self-awareness and helps clients unlock breakthroughs.

Time management comes into focus as we discuss its role in maintaining session boundaries and ensuring clients derive maximum value. It’s a practical yet essential skill—one that’s vital for closing sessions effectively while allowing both coach and client to leave the coaching “bubble” ready to engage with the wider world.

From there, we explore cultural awareness and the importance of understanding the systemic challenges and diverse lived experiences our clients may face. We reflect on our own growth and commitment to educating ourselves, creating inclusive spaces, and embracing the complexities of coaching within a multicultural landscape.

We also dive into creativity and agility, sharing how “dancing in the moment” helps us respond to clients’ needs without rigidly adhering to structures or models. This is complemented by our exploration of keeping ego in check, reminding ourselves as coaches to stay client-centred and avoid the temptation to impose our own agendas.

Towards the end of the episode, we discuss two transformative skills: lifelong learning and courage. We share how embracing a learner’s mindset keeps us open to growth, while courage allows us to navigate the often vulnerable space of coaching conversations with authenticity and boldness.

Throughout the episode, we reflect on our personal experiences and offer practical insights that you can apply to your own coaching practice.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to deepen your skills, we hope this episode provides inspiration and guidance on your journey as a coach.

31 Oct 2022061 Conversation Structures in Coaching00:19:53

In today’s episode we are talking about how you can structure your coaching conversations. One of the reasons we’re talking about this today is that when people start coaching they want to learn tools and structures and as you develop as a coach you might start to think about what you can and can’t say to your clients in your sessions.

We talk about:

  • What makes a coaching conversation different from a normal conversation?
  • What structures are available to you?
  • The unlearning process when practising coaching conversations as an established coach
  • Can intuition play a role in coaching conversations
  • What is the difference between coaching the story and coaching the person
  • How to have solution and future focussed conversations

Coaching conversations develop over time and having a structure ensures that you and your client have a container that feels safe. We would love to hear what conversation structures you use and how you keep the discipline of holding your coaching conversations in the place they need to be.

05 Dec 2022066 Coaching as a Career Option for Military Leavers00:16:38

In today's episode we are talking all about coaching as a career option for military leavers. We wanted to talk about this for a number of reasons which we will outline but also because both of our husbands are former military personnel and we are registered with ELCAS which provides funding opportunities. So let's discuss why coaching could be a great fit for military leavers.

We will discuss:

  • how coaching could fit into the lives and careers of people who are used to military service
  • the investment already made in leadership skills in the military matches so well with coaching as a leadership skill
  • how you can make your CV understandable to non military people
  • ways you can step out of the military with confidence and enjoy the change
  • why transitions are a common theme amongst our coaching trainees

Military personnel bring so many qualities to the world of coaching and for anyone wanting to make the transition we encourage you to get in touch with us. We are happy to talk to you to discuss further how a career in coaching could work for you.

13 Feb 2023076 Coaching Anxiety00:21:04

In this week's episode we are talking about a subject that was requested and we can understand why. We are talking about coaching anxiety and a number of things can come up when anxiety is mentioned by a client. For some coaches there may be a worry that people with anxiety are not ready to be coached or it might trigger our own anxiety and worries that we can’t support someone in the coaching role with this.

To support coaches with this we discuss:

  • Why anxiety might be seen as something that a person needs to fix or get rod of
  • Anxiety as an emotion
  • How you can help a coachee to explore their anxiety
  • Scenario based anxiety
  • Ways you can resource a client to support their anxiety
  • How curiosity can be an important tool
  • Questions that can help the coachee to invite distance between themselves and the emotion

Anxiety can be common so it is important to consider the role you will play as a coach to support someone with their anxiety. There are many ways a coach can have a positive impact on anxiety and it is important that coaches start to understand how their role can help.

16 Jan 2023072 Tailoring Your Coaching Approach00:18:30

In today’s episode we are discussing how you can tailor your coaching approach in order to become a world class and ethical coach.

We talk about:

  • How your clients get better results and more of a transformation through tailoring your approach with them
  • How you can understand your clients needs at the start of your coaching relationship and also acknowledge any changing needs
  • The importance of listening to how your client experiences the world in order to be able to adapt to them
  • The power of questions and how they can support this process
  • Why boundaries are important
  • Alternative ways to engage with coaching

It is clear that a one size fits all approach does not work in the world of coaching if you want to be an effective coach. The more you work with your client it is likely that you will be able to tailor your approach to meet their needs. Have you considered the different ways in which you can adapt your coaching style to the needs of your clients? Are there any barriers you have come across?

21 Feb 2022021 The Value of Coaching Supervision00:20:18

Having all the information on how to become an excellent coach for your clients is not enough - you need to be supervised along the way. Supervision is essential on your path because it helps you to continue to grow and develop as a coach, and to work in a ethical way.

In today's episode, we'll be showing you just how much coaching supervision helps you see the bigger picture and get clarity in your coaching sessions.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • The difference between coaching and supervision
  • What coaching supervision can feel like
  • The types of supervision in the coaching space
  • How supervision can help you work on your reflective practitioner skills

Your relationship with a coaching supervisor is just as important as the one you have with your coachee. It should be a safe space to communicate your thoughts and get a learning experience from each session. It should also help you understand the best way to navigate difficult situations you're having with your clients, without disclosing information about them. Supervision isn't just for you, it enhances the results your clients get too.

12 Dec 2022067 The Role of Beliefs in Coaching00:24:46

In this week's episode we want to talk to you about an essential pillar of coaching that we both love, beliefs. We could easily talk for a long time about beliefs as there are so many different approaches but today we will focus on some of the important elements when we consider the role of beliefs in coaching.

We discuss:

  • what are the different types of belief
  • how beliefs can help or hinder us
  • some of the limiting beliefs that we have personally overcome
  • ways to invite more helpful thoughts
  • the positive intentions behind some of our limiting beliefs
  • the power of changing our unhelpful beliefs
  • how coaching can help people to design a life they want

Beliefs are such an important part of the coaching experience and supporting your clients to identify unhelpful beliefs and then unlock, release and let go of them will be  life changing for them. Have you focussed on beliefs work with your coachees or with yourself?

07 Feb 2022019 The Power of Observations in Coaching00:13:52

As a coach in a session, it's not enough to just ask questions and listen to your coaches response.  Observations are what makes coaching transformational.

In today's episode, we'll help you to understand how you can channel the power of observations into your conversations and use it to identify the blindspots your clients might have missed.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • Why observations are so important in a coaching conversation.
  • The different types of observations.
  • How to use your observations to create awareness for your clients.
  • The art of making observations and how to use it in a coaching conversation

Making observations is a skill that helps unlock resourcefulness in your client. It's where you as the coach need to learn what's helpful and not helpful to share as observations and the judgement you use as a coach shapes the experience your client has.

Observations enables your client to become  conscious of their thoughts and actions, and also find answers they had hidden in their minds. To do this well you'll need to tune down your internal voice, brush up on your listening skills and observe what's going on in a coaching session.

30 Dec 2024174 Behind the Scenes of 202400:30:00

2024 has been a year of growth, challenges, and meaningful evolution.

In this intimate and reflective episode we share  a behind-the-scenes journey through 2024 in our coaching business.

The year kicked off with a significant milestone: hiring a team of qualified coaching supervisors to support learners completing their coaching qualifications. Reflecting on this process, we share how our initial concerns about recruitment—"Would anyone want to work with us?"—were quickly replaced by excitement as we met a wave of talented, passionate professionals eager to contribute. This expansion not only enriched the team but also enhanced diversity, strengthening our learners’ experience with fresh perspectives.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Jo humorously recounts a roof disaster that began as a minor patch-up job and spiralled into a two-week replacement, offering listeners a glimpse of life's unpredictability. Similarly, Zoe shares her challenges juggling family expectations during the summer when work had to take precedence, highlighting the delicate balance between business growth and personal life.

We celebrate major achievements, including the launch of two significant programs:

  • Group and Team Coaching Program: A natural next step for coaches looking to expand their impact.
  • Neurodivergent Inclusive Practitioner Training: Designed to help coaches create truly inclusive spaces.

Throughout the year, we also ran standout events like the Coaching Summit and the Emotions Coaching Summit, which attracted over 1,000 participants each. We also share how we spontaneously added a new initiative—a coaching challenge—born from a 4 a.m. idea. This experiment proved to be a joyful success, offering simple ways for participants to engage, learn, and grow.

On a personal note, we share how we both invested in their own development: Zoe attended a spiritual retreat in California, deepening her exploration of consciousness and systemic influences, while Jo explored sound healing and body-oriented coaching. Our reflections reveal a shared value of lifelong learning, not only for our clients but also for ourselves.

The episode concludes with warmth, gratitude, and a reminder that growth often comes through new experiences, creative experiments, and embracing the imperfections of life and business.

Whether you’re a coach, entrepreneur, or someone curious about the realities of running a thriving business, this episode is an inspiring and relatable listen.

Key Lessons Learned:

  1. Growth is rarely seamless: Hiring, expanding, or trying something new brings challenges, but it’s worth it for long-term success.
  2. Diversity enriches community: Expanding perspectives improves team dynamics and learning outcomes.
  3. Balance is a constant work in progress: Business growth and personal responsibilities require intentional navigation.
  4. Spontaneous ideas can spark success: The Coaching Challenge was a hit because we trusted our instincts and kept it simple.
  5. Your environment matters: A creative, supportive space fuels productivity and inspiration.
  6. Investing in yourself fuels your business: Retreats and personal development deepen your capacity to serve others.

Key Takeaways:

  • Don’t let perfectionism stop you—take action and refine as you go.
  • Experiment with new initiatives like events, challenges, or programs. You’ll learn what works and evolve.
  • Prioritise diversity when growing your team; it strengthens perspectives and relationships.
  • Invest time in personal development—it’s not separate from business success.
  • Life isn’t perfect. Balance business with family, and remember to show yourself compassion during setbacks.

05 Jun 2023092 People Pleasing in Coaching00:19:57

In this week's episode we want to talk about something that can be impactful for a lot of people, the act of people pleasing. We are sure that a lot of you listening will have come across this as something that you do yourself or something that you have heard your coachees talk about. So let's dive into the conversation about how this can show up and what you can do about it.

We will discuss:

  • the theory behind people pleasing and where it comes from
  • how people pleasing can show up in coaching
  • the ways people make it clear that they people please
  • the emotions people pleasing can trigger in people
  • what support and challenge can a coach provide around this
  • what questions can coaches offer to help the coachee see a new perspective

It is important to remember that people pleasing may not only show up for our clients but also for us as coaches so this is an important topic to have awareness around. Through coaching people can begin to understand their own triggers for this behaviour and start to make the positive change they want to experience.

06 Jan 2025175 Accelerating Your Coaching Business In 202500:21:10

As the calendar turns to a fresh year, we bring experience, energy, and experience to guide listeners through accelerating their coaching business in 2025. This episode is more than a blueprint—it’s a call to action.

The conversation opens with a relatable moment: the energy of a new year—that “turning of the page” feeling. Whether you’re starting fresh or aiming to level up, we highlight the power of intentionality and clear planning. For them, 2025 isn’t just another year; it’s a space to decide and declare, “This will be my most successful year yet.”

Reflecting on our own journey, we dive into the importance of focus. Rather than overwhelming yourself with endless goals, pick one big lever—a single, impactful action that will drive your business forward. For many, that might mean launching a group coaching program, developing a niche, or finally training to become a coach. We share stories of how bold, intentional decisions shaped our business, like the creation of our Group & Team Coaching and Neurodivergent Inclusive Practitioner programs, major milestones we're proud to launch in 2025.

We also share an often-overlooked truth: success isn’t just about hitting numbers. Jo recounts the relief of releasing attachment to specific outcomes, choosing instead to celebrate every small win—“We did it. We launched it.” They remind listeners to embrace a learner’s mindset, treating setbacks as opportunities to refine, adapt, and try again.

Another powerful theme? Sustainability in business. Zoe shares candid moments of creative fatigue after writing extensive courses and how six months of recovery renewed her energy for the next big project. Whether you’re navigating creative burnout, pricing doubts, or imposter syndrome, we emphasise that the journey requires endurance. Business is a marathon, not a sprint, and nurturing your energy—through clear plans, supportive environments, and community—is key to staying the course.

The episode wraps up with a practical nudge: “What do you need to accelerate your business this year?” Whether it’s refining your niche, raising prices, or building a consistent pipeline of clients, we invite you to step into 2025 with clarity, confidence, and an entrepreneurial mindset.

Key Lessons Learned:

  1. Decide to be successful: Intentionality shifts energy. Declare your goals for 2025 and believe in your ability to figure it out.
  2. Pick one impactful focus: Choose a single, high-leverage action—like launching a program or niching down—to build momentum.
  3. Detach from outcomes: Celebrate the effort and process of creating something new, not just the results.
  4. Be a learner, not a perfectionist: Use setbacks as information to refine and improve your strategies.
  5. Sustain your energy: Creative and business growth requires endurance—plan for rest, reflection, and recovery.
  6. Think like a CEO: Shift from “just being a coach” to embracing the entrepreneurial mindset needed to grow a business.

Key Takeaways:

  • Approach 2025 with clarity, focus, and the mindset of possibility.
  • Launch that program, create that niche, or train as a coach—whatever aligns with your next stage of growth.
  • Plan your year strategically: set early wins, medium-sized goals, and long-term projects.
  • Let go of attachment to exact results; focus on consistent action.
  • Build systems, community, and resources to support your business and personal well-being.

28 Nov 2022065 Homework for Coaching Clients00:19:36

In this week's episode we are talking about something we get asked about a lot in our group, whether or not to give homework to your clients. This can be individual to each coach and we would love to bring to you some thoughts around this topic and what impacts it might have.

We discuss:

  • what actually is homework?
  • the difference between coach set homework and client chosen homework
  • how we can support out coachees to achieve their coaching outcomes
  • when it might be appropriate to give homework
  • the importance of contracting and boundaries
  • how you can bring curiosity to sessions where homework has not been completed
  • what are some of the pitfalls around assigning homework

Assigning homework will always be a personal choice for each coach and may well only be relevant to some clients. In general though we ask you to consider what the reasons are for assigning homework and whose outcomes do they truly meet. As a coach it's important to be clear and purposeful when we ask our clients to take actions. How have you explored the idea of giving homework and how effective have you found it to be?

10 Apr 2023084 What Does Challenge Sound Like in Coaching?00:18:21

In this week's episode we are talking all about what challenge sounds like in coaching. This is something we have found ourselves discussing with students in our ILM level 7 coaching programme and we thought it would be beneficial to discuss it here as well.

We talk about:

  • how challenge can be discussed in the contracting stage of a coaching relationship
  • what does challenge mean in a coaching environment
  • why we challenge
  • what your beliefs are as a coach about challenge
  • how to seek permission to challenge
  • the importance of your reflective practice
  • challenge as a positive aspect of coaching

Often challenge can be difficult within coaching sessions but by exploring this during the contracting period, building strong rapport and seeking permission to share you can ensure that your coachee is getting what they want and need from your sessions.

29 May 2023091 Decision Making in Coaching00:19:59

In this episode we discuss the role of coaching in decision making. The bottom line is that all coaching involves decision making from your coachee, from choosing you as their coach to deciding what they want to work on in their sessions. There are lots of important things to consider around decision making.

We talk about:

  • the importance values play in decision making
  • what we as coaches can bring to the situation and open new insights and tools to help the client bring a new perspective on the decision
  • how can you support your coachee to identify what the gap is around making the decision
  • the role of strengths based approach to enable your clients to feel more connected to the decision
  • ways to begin to trust your decision making process
  • some of the pitfalls coaches can fall into when supporting clients

Our role as coaches is to guide clients towards their own inner coach and help them develop their own decision-making skills rather than us offering our own thoughts on the decision. How do you see this showing up for your clients or even for yourself?

19 Sep 2022055 Ethical Coaching00:22:32

In this week's episode we are discussing ethical coaching. Ethics are at the centre of great coaching and helps to guide our practice but as the coaching industry is unregulated where can we turn to for our ethical framework?

We discuss:

- where we can turn to as coaches for an ethical framework

- a number of different examples of ethical dilemmas coaches might face

- our judgement as coaches and practitioners that needs to be developed within the code of ethics.

- the role of supervision to support us working through our ethical questions

- the importance of boundaries

- one ethics model that is incredibly useful for coaches

Ethical issues, although rare, are a great opportunity to tap into your experience as a coach and we hope we have given you a range of situations and frameworks to consider when wanting to be an ethical coach.

27 Jan 2025178 How to Coach Anger00:21:59

Have you ever wondered how to help someone move forward when they’re stuck in anger?

In this episode, Jo and Zoe explore how to coach clients through anger and related emotions in a way that is safe, ethical, and transformative.

Anger can show up in coaching as a block, a motivator, or even an unrecognised emotion. We discuss how unresolved anger from the past can impact self-esteem and relationships, and how it often masks deeper feelings like sadness or fear.

Jo shares a powerful example of a client who used anger as a motivator but discovered it wasn’t emotionally sustainable.

We also talk about helping clients identify their relationship with anger, whether they’ve buried it or expressed it in unhealthy ways, and how coaching can support them to create a new, healthier approach.

Through practical steps, including naming emotions, identifying unmet needs, and exploring the relationship between anger and values, we outline how to guide clients to understand, process, and reframe their anger.

Whether it’s asking clients to "give their anger a voice" or exploring the systemic roots of their emotions, this episode is packed with actionable insights.

If you’ve ever felt hesitant to ask about anger in a session, this episode will help you approach it with confidence, curiosity, and care.

Key Lessons Learned

  1. Anger is often rooted in unmet needs or value conflicts.
  2. Naming and validating emotions is the first step to transformation.
  3. Emotions like anger can mask deeper feelings such as sadness or fear.
  4. Helping clients reframe anger as a signal, not a problem, empowers growth.
  5. Closure and acceptance are essential to move forward from unresolved anger.

Key Takeaways

  • Encourage clients to explore and name their emotions.
  • Use tools like values exercises and somatic practices to process anger.
  • Anger can be a motivator, but it needs to be channelled sustainably.
  • Always validate emotions to create a safe, judgment-free space.
  • Work on closure by helping clients let go of anger tied to past events.

Steps to Coach Anger and Emotions

  3. Validate and Give Voice to the Emotion
    • Create a safe space for clients to express their anger without judgement.
  4. Uncover the Root Cause
    • Ask deeper questions to explore what lies beneath the anger—e.g., sadness, fear, or unmet needs.
  5. Identify Unmet Needs
    • Encourage clients to reflect on what their anger is highlighting as a missing or unresolved need.
  6. Use Somatic Practices
    • Introduce body-based techniques to help clients connect with and release stored anger.
  7. Reframe the Emotion
    • Help clients see anger as a signal or ally, guiding them to their deeper needs or values.
  8. Introduce Choice
    • Explore alternative strategies or emotions that could serve them better in the situation.

  4. What unmet need might your anger be pointing to?

18 Sep 2023107 Replacing Managers with Coaches00:20:14

In this week's episode we are talking about something we read in an article on LinkedIn relating to replacing managers with coaches. Listen in to hear our reflections on this and consider some of the aspects of this topic we need to bear in mind.

We will discuss:

  • the impact managers have on employees experience at work
  • the difference between a coach and a manager
  • who does a manager truly serve?
  • the state of employee engagement
  • when might a coaching approach not work

While we are not advocating for all managers to be replaced by coaches we certainly see the benefit for coaches in the workspace. The availability of coaching training would also have an impact on the workforce positively for the future.

21 Apr 2025190 Parenting and Coaching00:21:07

Have you ever wondered how coaching tools could completely transform the way you parent?

This episode is an honest look at the realities of parenting, the guilt we carry, the mistakes we make, and the tools coaching gives us to navigate it all. We're not perfect parents, and we’re not trying to be. But through coaching, we’ve found more compassion for ourselves, more connection with our children, and more courage to parent in alignment with who we are.

As coaches and as parents, we often find ourselves reflecting on how deeply intertwined those two identities have become. In this episode, we explore how coaching has shaped the way we parent, and how those tools have helped us not only survive the hard days, but show up more consciously, compassionately, and confidently for our children.

We dive into how self-awareness, developed through coaching, allows us to notice our triggers, pause before reacting, and respond in ways that align with our values rather than our overwhelm. we shared stories of bedtime meltdowns and spaghetti bolognese disasters, and how coaching has taught me to stop, breathe, and ask myself: What’s really going on for me in this moment?

We talked about how coaching allows us to support our children in developing emotional literacy, self-awareness, and resilience. Rather than jumping in to fix things when our children face challenges at school or with friends, we’re now more likely to ask thoughtful questions, ones that invite them to explore their feelings, make decisions, and develop their own solutions.

We also explored the value of affirmations and belief work with our kids, how just shifting internal messaging from “I can’t do this” to “I can do this” has helped our children succeed in big and small ways, like learning to ride a bike or preparing for cross country races.

If today’s episode resonated with you and you’re curious about how coaching could support your own parenting journey, take our free quiz to find out which coaching course is the right fit for you:

07 Apr 2025188 How to use Interruptions in Coaching00:18:26

Is interrupting ever a good thing in coaching?

Many of us have been taught that interrupting is rude, disrespectful, or unhelpful, but what if the right kind of interruption could be transformational for a client?

In this episode, we explore the complex role of interruptions in coaching. We often get asked in coaching supervision whether interrupting a client is okay, or if it’s a sign of being too directive. The truth is, it depends. Interrupting can be incredibly useful when done with intention and in service of the client. It can be a tool to help clients shift patterns, refocus, and move towards their goals.

We discuss different types of interruptions, from gentle redirections to stronger pattern-breaking interventions, and how to contract with clients upfront to make sure interruptions are welcomed, not resented. We also highlight the importance of rapport, as well as when to hold space in silence instead of stepping in.

By the end of this episode, you’ll feel more confident about when and how to use interruptions in coaching, ensuring they enhance rather than disrupt the coaching process.

Interrupting can be a valuable coaching skill when used intentionally and in service of the client. Whether it’s a gentle redirection or a bold wake-up call, the key is to use it with awareness, rapport, and purpose.

If you want to refine your coaching skills and explore how different techniques, including interruptions, can enhance your practice, check out our Coaching Training Quiz at www.mycoachingcourse.com.

Key Lessons Learned

  1. Interruptions are not inherently bad; They can help clients stay on track and challenge unhelpful patterns.
  2. The key question is: Who is the interruption serving? If it’s for the client’s benefit, it can be a valuable tool.
  3. Interrupting can be part of a coaching contract; Discussing it upfront ensures clients are comfortable with the approach.
  4. Some clients want to be interrupted; They may even request it in pre-coaching questionnaires, especially if they know they tend to talk in circles.
  5. Strong rapport allows for more direct interruptions; Clients who trust you are more open to challenge.
  6. Silence is also a form of interruption; Holding space instead of jumping in can be just as powerful.
  7. Interruptions should be purposeful; Whether it’s to redirect, challenge, or highlight a pattern, it should always serve the coaching process.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Use Interruptions in Coaching

  1. Decide Whether an Interruption is Needed
    • Is the client looping?
    • Are they going off-track from their goal?
    • Are they avoiding something important?
  2. Frame Interruptions as a Coaching Tool
    • In the chemistry session, discuss whether they find interruptions helpful.
    • Use pre-coaching questionnaires to gauge their communication style.
  3. Use Gentle Interruptions for Redirection
    • If a client is spending too much time on updates instead of their goal, you might say:
"I’m noticing that we’ve spent a lot of time on updates. You also mentioned you want to focus on [goal]. What would be most useful right now?"
  4. Use Stronger Interruptions to Break Patterns
    • If a client is stuck in repetitive thinking, a direct approach can help:
"I’m going to stop you there. We’ve had this same conversation in three sessions now. What’s keeping you stuck?"
  5. Ensure Rapport is Strong Before Using Direct Interruptions
    • If a client trusts you, they’ll be more receptive to a bold challenge.
    • Be aware of cultural and personal sensitivities; not all clients will react well to strong interventions.
  6. Balance Interruptions with Silence
    • If a client is processing something deep, silence might be the best approach instead of interruption.
  7. Debrief After Using Interruptions
    • At the end of the session, ask:
"Was my approach today, including any interruptions, helpful for you?"
