15 Nov 2020 | Rams, Emily in Paris, The Good Lord Bird and The Salisbury Poisonings | 00:28:48
There's no shortage of plague and pestilence in this episode as Karl comes to grips with the Australian remake of the cult Icelandic film Rams, Andrew has a close call with a Russian assassination plot, Ethan Hawke channels his mad preacher in Good Lord Bird and Mrs Karl packs the bags for a French getaway that's as ridiculous as it was welcome in the depths of COVID lockdown. 25 May 2019 | All good things must come to an end: Game of Thrones, Acute Misfortune, that election result | 00:38:53
Did "two-phones Billy" do for himself, as Andrew supposes, or did the odds Shorten against Labor because we're all so focused on the hip pocket? Are the GoT fans right to be angry about that finale or does it actually make sense, as Karl insists? And if you met a psycho like Archibald Prize-winning painter Adam Cullen would you spend four years in his company, as journalist Erik Jensen did for his book Acute Misfortune (now a movie starring Daniel Henshall and Toby Wallace), or would you get the hell out of there? No question is too big, too small, too obvious or too obscure for Andrew Young and Karl Quinn on the only pop culture gabfest from Melbourne hosted by these two. 18 Aug 2018 | Did you spy it? | 00:33:51
Andrew and Karl are shocked to find themselves on the same page for once, both raving about The Spy Who Dumped Me. But what was it that really caught Andrew's eye, and should he have looked the other way? Plus a satisfyingly unsatisfying collection of short stories by Ottessa Moshfegh, a second look at The Wife, Andrew's brush with a pensioner discount, and more digressions than you can poke a stick at in your favourite dive into pop culture, from Australia, by two blokes, one called Andrew and the other called Karl. Andrew wonders who today's Prime Minister is, while Karl takes a trip out to Heide to look at - but not sit in - some of the most perfect examples of the work of Australia's most famous furniture designers. Grant and Mary Featherston make a showing at the NGV too, in an exhibition about the NGV. Meanwhile, Karl is still reeling from the ending of Sharp Objects, and Better Call Saul morphs into Breaking Bad redux. It's all here on your favourite pop culture podcast.

04 Aug 2018 | Families, eh? | 00:33:16
We've all got them, but thankfully not too many are like the mob in Patrick Melrose, the mini-series based on the memoirs of Edward St Aubyn. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Hugo Weaving and it is (says Karl) excellent, if rather gruelling. The Incredibles 2 is much easier going, says Andrew, a long-time-coming sequel that was absolutely worth the wait. In The Wife, meanwhile, Glenn Close is superb as the long-suffering spouse of a novelist (Jonathan Pryce) who is awarded the Nobel Prize - but is that prying journalist (Christian Slater) right in thinking he isn't the real author? All this and more on the latest episode of our favourite podcast for discerning consumers of culture high and low. VARIETY: 'Incredbles 2' passes $1 billion worldwide KARL QUINN: Benedict Cumberbatch is superb, but it's Hugo Weaving who makes Patrick Melrose

26 Aug 2018 | Barnesy and the shark | 00:27:13
Karl tags along as Jimmy Barnes revisits his childhood in Glasgow and Elizabeth in Working Class Boy, the doco based on the stage show based on the book based on the actual crappy and utterly impoverished upbringing of the Cold Chisel frontman. Andrew heads in the other direction, checking out Billionaire Boys Club before heading to the Home Show in search of ... well, what exactly? And that leaves just enough time for a quick wrestle with the 70-odd-foot of gruntingly good fun that is the giant shark movie The Meg. Enjoy.

14 Jul 2018 | We're watching you | 00:16:09
Foxtrot is a brilliant film from Israel about a soldier at a checkpoint who is killed. Or maybe he isn't. Condor is a TV series about a man who comes back to his office to find everyone has been killed. It revisits the book on which the 1975 movie Robert Redford thriller Three Days of the Condor was based. Andrew and Karl cast their beady eyes over these very different takes on the era of espionage. And they'll know if you've been listening or not...

16 Jan 2019 | The Favourite, Golden Globes, Sugarfoot Ramblers & Succession | 00:28:46
Music at the end by the Sugarfoot Ramblers (Bandcamp), the song is Georgia Swing. The Favourite is unlike the stuffy English drama one of the movie's stills make lead you to think. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster adn "Greek Weird Cinema", Karl's words not mine) and starring Olivia Coleman. Something about rabbits? Either way Karl and Andrew both agree it's fantastic. There's a touch on the GGs before Andrew is emploring us to get out and see more live music (a theme of The Clappers), his example of one great band - The Sugarfoot Ramblers. Lastly for fans of In The Loop, Veep, The Thick of It, The Big Short or the like - Succession is the latest TV series you could comfortably group with these political / business comedy / dramas. No prizes for guessing Succession's inspiration, and why it's made little noise in Australia. Tell a friend about the show - The Clappers!

14 Jun 2020 | Back to the movies, plus Run, Unorthodox, Michael Chabon and Paul Rudd | 00:33:41
Are you ready to get back into a crowded room to watch a movie on the big screen, or is it too soon? Maybe the drive-in is a better option, for now at least. While you and our hosts ponder life's big choices, let Andrew and Karl offer some guidance on small-screen offerings including the HBO comedy Run (on Foxtel), the Netflix series Unorthodox (yes, Andrew finally got around to watching it), and Paul Rudd in the movies The Catcher Was a Spy and the series Living With Yourself. With bonus digressions, naturally. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
25 Aug 2019 | Secret men’s business: Tarantino, Manson, Danger Close, The Boys | 00:51:05
It’s 50 years since Charles Manson’s ‘family’ went on their murderous rampage, and Karl checks out three new projects that highlight the hold the subject still has on filmmakers. Andrew clocks a superhero series with a difference, and Karl makes the case for Kriv Stenders’s Vietnam War movie Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan. It’s all so manly Andrew feels strangely compelled to find somewhere for a beer.

09 Jul 2018 | I like your old stuff better than your new stuff | 00:37:28
Playing classic albums live is all the rage, but is there any point besides nostalgia? The chaps consider the merits (or otherwise) of rehashing the likes of Tubular Bells, Get Born and The Velvet Underground & Nico on stage. Plus JK Simmons (or is it Rowling?) in Counterpart, and the conundrum of a man whose show has been axed being declared the most popular person on television. Pop culture, eh - what's not to love? 18 Nov 2018 | From LA to New York, from New York to Napoli | 00:38:21
Karl catches King Kong in the Big Apple, and likes it more than some of New York's theatre reviewers. Suspiria is bewildering, and no amount of Andrew's ferreting around in libraries can change that. And Andrew thinks My Brilliant Friend just might be a book-to-screen adaptation he can get behind.

02 Sep 2019 | The Nightingale, Succession, The Loudest Voice, Les Norton, White Night | 00:37:51
In a packed episode of your favourite pop culture gabfest, Andrew and Karl cast their judgement on Jennifer Kent's colonial revenge thriller The Nightingale, the media drama series Succession and The Loudest Voice, the King's Cross in the 1980s potboiler Les Norton, Melbourne's three-night festival of lights, and the very notion of cool. Yes, cool. Well, they'd know, right? Tell a friend about the show - The Clappers! Join our Facebook Group The Clappers is produced by Nearly, a podcast network. 22 Sep 2018 | Ladies in Black, men in a pickle | 00:29:39
Is it only acceptable to post images of a disgusting menu item if you've actually imbibed said dish? Andrew thinks so, but there's no way Karl is putting that thing in his mouth. Plus, the discreet charms of the bourgeois Ladies in Black, the gorgeous Leave No Trace, and the delightfully offensive Bald Archy Prize. All in your favourite pop culture podcast from those two blokes in Melbourne, Australia. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
11 May 2019 | LEGO, Long Shot, the 'lection ... and Top End Wedding | 00:34:28
Rom-coms are back, and in Long Shot - starring the unlikely (but not impossible, as the poster says) pairing of Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen - and Miranda Tapsell's charming Top End Wedding, Karl reckons the breadth of the form has never been more apparent. But that's not enough to convince Andrew, who prefers the blocky delights of LEGO Masters. But nothing could convince him to tune in to this never-ending election campaign. It's all here on your favourite pop culture gabfest from those two blokes in Melbourne, Australia. Tell a friend about the show - The Clappers! The Clappers is produced by Nearly, a podcast network. 02 May 2018 | Peter Capaldi talks Dr Who and everyone's favourite M------ -ucker | 00:28:51
In a special bonus edition of The Clappers, Karl chats with the Scottish actor Peter Capaldi over clanking cups of tea in a Melbourne hotel room. You may know Capaldi as Doctor Who, or as the young chap in Local Hero all those years ago (it was just his second role, and he's had more than 100 others since). But for Karl, it's his turn as the sweariest man in politics, Malcolm Tucker, in The Thick of It and In the Loop that really stands out. Capaldi lets slip that he's going to be working with the shows' creator Armando Ianucci (The Death of Stalin) again. But will it be on his daptation of David Copperfield? Hmmm.
