For this week's Profile in Cinemania, Scrutinizer Zacharia plays us a cassette on Hollywood's King of Terror, Bela Lugosi, the man the world knew as "Dracula." Lugosi was a complex and tragic man who fought fascists in Hungary and Weimar Germany; and after achieving fame in America, used his public platform to do some real good in the world while fighting his own private battles. Aside from creating the stereotype of the vampire we all know and love today, he was also responsible for organizing the world's first film actor's union in his native Hungary, and later, helped found the Screen Actors Guild.

When their stolen Popemobile breaks down, the gang finds themselves lost somewhere in the American Southwest. Naturally, Cinquistor Ethan declares that this is *the* perfect time to hold a Conclave to analyze Quentin Dupieux's surreal offering "Rubber" from 2010...   

Having evaded a group of biker-assassins by slipping into a seedy motel, the gang gets back on the road to continue their analysis of a film from 2010 about a (no, really) psychic killer tire: "Rubber."

Not long after his vicious betrayal of the society and our abduction into the now-defunct cinema palace somewhere in that one flyover state, Verifier Andy personally tried to make up for his betrayal to me by arranging an interview with someone relevant to the conclave we’d just held: puppeteer extraordinaire, Mike Quinn. Best known for his portrayal of Nien Nunb in that one movie about the return of a space wizard and his trusty laser sword, Mr. Quinn is better known to us in the Cinemania Society as “the puppeteer who got the talking boil to do its thing in How to Get Ahead in Advertising,” which as you’ll hear was a bit of a surprise to him. Today, in lieu of your usual episode, we members of the Cinemania Society are releasing a statement of solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and the Writer’s Guild of America. The Cinemania Society, LLC has an active SAG contract, which means those in our group who aren’t already full SAG members are at least SAG-eligible. While we self-produce our show, we do not wish to create even the impression of crossing the picket line. Unfortunately, this means there will be no new episode for our listeners this week. If you’re unhappy with this outcome, we suggest you direct your complaints to the AMPTP who could end this strike whenever they wanted.

This strike isn’t “greedy, spoiled actors,” it isn’t about the 1 percenters like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. Only 13% of SAG members make the minimum $26,000 per year to have access to the SAG health plan…meaning most actors live check to check like the rest of us, and their checks are exceedingly small. Studio execs make 300 to 400 times what their lowest-paid workers make. In the ‘80s, no exec made more than 30 times their lowest-paid worker. If studios were capable of making some of the best and most iconic movies in history with only that level of pay inequity, they can do it again.

If you like our show, we encourage you to show your support in other ways. If you’re near a SAG-AFTRA picket line, consider picking up a sign and marching alongside the workers in solidarity. They’ll appreciate it. Or you can donate food, water, and first aid supplies to the marchers. You can also donate to funds set up to support workers through their strike – because while actors and writers are marching, they’re not earning, and everyone still has to buy groceries and make their rent or mortgage payments.

In anticipation of our next conclave on one of the first films to be produced under the Hays Code, we are re-releasing our Profile in Cinemania on William H. Hays, the disgraced Harding-era politician who made it his mission to impose "moral values" on cinema.

In the second part of our Season 1 finale, the Society pulls an Arthur Dent to try to stave off the inevitable, then are arrested and carted off to jail. Throughout, they keep a steely-eyed mission focus, and continue their Conclave on Ralph Bakshi's 1977 post-apocalyptic adult cartoon feature "Wizards" despite the intervention of civic and legal authorities...

The final Profile in this year's inventory is a VHS tape that contains a biography on everyone's favorite typecast galactic hero turned villainous clown-slash-Twitter superuser, Mark Hamill. We don't know what's going to happen to the Strip Mall of the Damned, but this was the last tape we were able to smuggle out the door in our underwear.

We next encounter the heretical outcasts calling themselves the Cinemania Society as they return to the Strip Mall of the Damned to find it being redeveloped by the city an inhospitable wasteland. They retreat to a makeshift lair down by the river where they can sip their cocktails in peace and discuss their latest Subject of Scrutiny, Stewart Raffill's Cinemania-inducing schock-tacular rip-off-fest from 1984, Ice Pirates. God only knows what madness our listeners will encounter...

Long after the heretical outcasts calling themselves the Cinemania Society made the their hair's-breadth escape from Cap'n McBloodgulper's Restaurant and Tiki Bar, they find themselves hungry, wet, and footsore on the outskirts of Nowhere, America. They take refuge in an abandoned museum, where they hold their next conclave on Mamoru Oishii's obscure but meaningful and highly influential 1985 animated feature, Tenshi no Tamago, a/k/a Angel's Egg. What horrors await the renegades of the Society, and worse still, its listeners?

Profligator Daniel reads from the apocrypha: the Book of the Prophet of New Jersey, Saint Kevin Smith, Patron of Jersey Girl-Rilla Film-Making.

The heretic renegades of the Cinemania Society, having escaped maroonment (is that even a word?) on a deserted island Puerto Rico, have finally made their way to a corner of Earth so vile and hated that nobody would want to go, in the desperate hopes that the Cinemassassins on their trail would not dare to follow. As they rest and recuperate in an abandoned church, Auntie Hope, Keeper of the Books Booze, is reminded of her Catholic School education, which reminds her in turn of Kevin Smith's 1999 film "Dogma," and calls a conclave to order.

This story of high adventure features a sketchy archaeologist in over his head who is faced with the hardest choice of his life.

Things are getting desperate as the gang finds itself stranded on the beach of a mysterious island, without food, water, or competently-constructed shelter. To take their minds off their rumbling tummies, The Society deliberates over and renders judgement upon the 1932 film, "The Island of Lost Souls." 

This early '80s crime drama gives the listener some insight into why it's always smart to treat the folks who work in service well, especially if you're up to no good...

In our Season 1 finale, the Society has a horrifying encounters with an act of unmitigated savagery, and a bit of other bad news, then assembles its Eighth Conclave to anesthetize itself from the impending jaws of fate. Ralph Bakshi's 1977 post-apocalyptic adult cartoon feature "Wizards" is on the docket. After some interruptions by civic authorities, the Society attempts to pull an Arthur Dent and stave off the inevitable, but are arrested and carted off to jail. Throughout, they keep a steely-eyed mission focus. They conclude Conclave 8 while in jail, but are interrupted when a mystery benefactor bails them out. Judgement is rendered at a bus stop, as the Society awaits both a future and a destination unknown...

This episode is produced in memory of Clifford Childers, an amazingly talented musician who performed much of the live music backing the reading of "Slugger." Clifford died in February of 2023. He will be missed.

Brother Methuselah discovered a VHS tape containing a profile on one of the darkest gods of the New Hollywood pantheon: William Friedkin, purveyor of dangerous amounts of CINEMANIA and award-winning director of the films The French Connection and The Exorcist. This Profile appears to have been read by Cinquisitor Ethan, though he cannot remember having done so. Also odd is the fact that this cassette appears to be decades old, even though Friedkin died less than a month ago...

We go full '30s radio theater as Professor Andrea leads our castaway conclave in its analysis of the 1932 sci-fi horror masterpiece "The Island of Lost Souls" (only recently available in its complete and unedited state!)
