23 Nov 2021 | #46 - Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) - Paying Homage and Nostalgia Infused With Stranger Things | 00:50:54
On this very special episode of Cinedicate, we don our proton packs as photographer Peter Casa joins to discuss Ghostbusters: Afterlife by Jason Reitman.
Taking a page out of Stranger Things' playbook, Jason Reitman takes up the Ghostbusters mantle from his father, Ivan Reitman, and takes the series in a radically different direction. Downplaying the comedic nature of the franchise and ramping up the paranormal threat, breathed new life into a dying movie property. Ultimately this was a love-letter not only to Ghostbusters, but to the late Harold Ramis.

We also dive into the lore of witches and propose that this film actually isn't about witchcraft, but actually is a tale of vampires. Perhaps Dario Argento got his facts a little mixed up. 28 Feb 2023 | #108 - Rambo: First Blood - The Film That Defined the '80s Action Genre | 01:08:33
This week, Todd of WSTR: Galactic Public Access returns to discuss one of the most heartful action films of the 1980s, Rambo: First Blood. On this episode we take a look back at the film that would spark an entire trend of films that spanned more than a decade, the '80s Action Genre. In addition, we also dive into the deep themes of the film that have to do with returning veterans and that toll war has on a soldier. Out of all the Rambo films that have been created so far, this picture, that was written by Stallone himself, would be considered Oscar worthy if it was released today. First Blood centers on John Rambo, a Vietnam veteran and Green Beret returning to America from active duty. Due to the trauma left on him from the conflict, John has trouble fitting into a society that looks down on him because of his service. He then becomes a drifter looking for his old squad-mates to reconnect. 07 Mar 2023 | #109 - All Quiet On The Western Front (1930 & 2022) - Why The Remake Doesn't Give The Original Film Justice | 01:29:29
Today on The Cinedicate, Christian, a Classic Hollywood cinephile, and Lucas, an avid Deutschephile, join the roundtable to discuss the original Academy Award winner for Best Picture and it's 2022 remake, All Quiet On The Western Front. This episode we compare and contrast the 1930 film to the 2022 remake both in story execution and cinematography. A heated debate ensues as we unpack which film upholds the poignant message of the original novel and whether or not the inclusion of the German High Command subplot in the remake added or subtracted from the plot. We also sprinkle in German history lessons all along the way. All Quiet On The Western Front is experienced through the perspective of young German recruits to the Imperial Army during World War 1. Primarily through the perspective of Paul, we are brought to the trenches and the ideas of romanticism of warfare is quickly dissipated as his friends and comrades are torn apart before his eyes. ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! 11 Apr 2023 | #114 - The White Lotus (S1 & S2) - A Juicy Look into the Lives of the Affluent | 01:31:24
This week, Singer/Songwriter HODJE discuses how the first season of The White Lotus inspired her latest single, Make Me The Villain. We also unpack the themes presented in both seasons of the show and look forward to the show's third season. How would you behave in a luxury all-inclusive resort? The White Lotus explores this question with its diverse cast of privileged characters. The show takes an unapologetic look at the selfishness and recklessness of the characters, who are out of touch with reality. Despite their unlikable nature, you cannot help but be invested in the story. This podcast will discuss the setting, the characters, and why The White Lotus is a must-watch show. This luxurious lifestyle is highlighted perfectly by the setting of the show - an all-inclusive resort that is super expensive to go to. 18 Apr 2023 | #115 - Triangle of Sadness - Getting Lost in the Glamour and Excess of the Influencer World | 01:21:09
Triangle of Sadness is a film that satirizes affluent culture and influencers on a super-yacht. While peering into these luxurious lives, the story also brings to light the paradoxical contrast between rich and poor. In this episode of The Cinedicate, we will discuss the movie's plot, it's symbolism, and it's mixed reviews. Additionally, we will compare it to other films that tackle the same subject matter. So, let's get lost in the Triangle of Sadness. The movie starts with two annoying characters, Yaya and Carl, who set the tone for what's to come. The audience is introduced to the phrase triangle of sadness, which becomes a recurring theme throughout the film. The film is all about equality and the contrast between wealth and poverty. The film takes the audience on a roller coaster ride and brings out different sides of human nature. While some people are content to live off the wealth and power they have obtained, others believe in equality and doing what's right, even if it means going against the norm. The film is highly symbolical and brings to light important issues that need to be addressed today. ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! 25 Apr 2023 | #116 - American Psycho - The Predatory Nature of Corporate America and Separating Fantasies from Reality | 01:51:39
American Psycho is a film that has sparked countless debates and discussions over the years. One of the most popular topics is whether or not the entire movie is just in the main character's imagination. However, as this podcast will explore, the "imagination theory" doesn't change the heart of the story. Instead, the film serves as a commentary on the vapidness of corporate America and the predatory nature of those in the financial industry. Through its surreal framework, American Psycho delivers a message about the culture of self-absorption and the consequences of ignoring the bigger picture. Join us as the hosts of First Prize Films weigh in on not only these topics, but also the legacy of this film. The film mocks the superficiality of its characters by showing how their approach to life is all surface level. Their business cards, suits, drugs, and even their mental states are interchangeable. This stylized approach adds to the surrealist feel of the movie. It is as if the characters are part of a dream-like world, where nothing is quite as it seems. 23 May 2023 | #120 - Beetlejuice (1988) - The Charm and Significance of Horror Aimed Towards a Younger Audience | 01:15:52
The word "Beetlejuice" has become almost synonymous with the horror genre, much like how saying "Candyman" three times would invite the titular character. It's a fan-favorite classic that's been around for decades and has definitely influenced numerous horror movies since. Joining this episode is Rainier, the creative mind behind Horror4Kids, a horror account dedicated to highlighting the art of showcasing the genre of horror to a younger audience. Beetlejuice perfectly fits into the category of being kid-friendly horror with an edge. The movie provided an excellent balance of horror and comedy that was geared towards younger audiences, but still enjoyable for adults. It brought out spooky themes and was the kid version of Candyman that even kids could handle, thus inching the horror genre towards what it is today. With today's technology, it would be great to see a sequel or a remake of Beetlejuice, something that's more mind-blowing and electrifying. We're hoping to witness the possibility of snakes in Saturn, something that would undoubtedly make a superb addition to the movie's legacy. ---------- Follow Horror4Kids on Twitter ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! However, The Last of Us is being hailed as one of the first successful video game to TV/movie adaptations. What makes this adaptation different from the rest? 06 Jun 2023 | #122 - The Evil Dead Franchise - Exploring the Horrifically Hilarious World of Evil Dead | 01:37:04
The Evil Dead franchise is a unique blend of horror and comedy that has captured the hearts of horror fans worldwide. The core elements of the franchise include the Necronomicon, chainsaws, shotguns, and evil spirits. Mixing horror and comedy is essential to making an Evil Dead movie, as it provides the necessary balance between tension and release. In this podcast, we explore different angles and themes that the franchise could explore to expand its world, take creative risks, and engage a wider audience. Whether it's by exploring motherhood and grief, combining film noir with Lovecraftian horror, or building a fully fleshed-out world, the Evil Dead franchise has the potential to become even more successful. It's not just about expanding the world, but expanding it in successful layers until it becomes a fully fleshed out world like John Wick. The first movie was a simple and direct story, and by the fourth, they built an entire world with an organization. Similarly, they could use the time travel element from Army of Darkness to hop from different places and time periods. It's clear that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have taken a step back, but whoever takes over creatively needs to take risks and build a world that keeps the audience engaged. ---------- Listen to Aaron on his podcast, WSTR: Galactic Public Access ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! 13 Jun 2023 | #123 - Point Break (1991 / 2015) - A Shallow Attempt to Cash in on a Beloved IP | 01:08:22
Point Break 1991 is a classic action movie that tells the story of an FBI agent named Johnny Utah who goes undercover to investigate a series of bank robberies committed by local surfers. With well-developed characters and expertly choreographed action scenes, this movie keeps you hooked from beginning to end. However, in 2015, a remake of this classic movie was released, and it failed to honor the original's spirit. This podcast explores the differences between the two movies, the importance of sincerity in film remakes, the lack of character development, and the significance of the filmmaker's intent in creating successful movie franchises. When it comes to remakes, it's important to remember that sincerity is key. This means that the film should wear its heart on its sleeve and tell the story it wants to tell without holding back. The original Point Break is a great example of this. Despite its silly premise, it tells the story earnestly and wants the audience to believe in it. This sincerity is what makes the film enjoyable to watch and unforgettable. ---------- Listen to Hector on his podcast, ReShoot: An Amateur's Guide to Gooder Film ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! 27 Jun 2023 | #125 - The Hobbit Trilogy - A Critical Comparison Against The Lord of the Rings | 01:27:57
Lord of the Rings is a cinematic masterpiece that has captured the hearts of millions of movie-goers and book lovers alike. The film has been adapted from the iconic novel of the same name, written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The film and book series depict an epic battle of good versus evil set in a fictional world known as Middle Earth. But what makes Lord of the Rings stand out from other fantasy films or books is the way it makes you believe that Middle Earth is a real place—a place that exists outside of the story being told. A world that is more than just the setting for the characters' adventures. The decision to split The Hobbit into three films feels like it was made solely for monetary gain rather than to serve the narrative. Other franchises like Harry Potter and Twilight did the same thing, but it doesn't work for The Hobbit. The result is that the entire product suffers when it could have worked just as well as a single film. Fans of the book were disappointed to see non-existent characters making appearances in the trilogy, and those who hadn't read the book found the plotlines convoluted and confusing. In short, the decision to make three movies out of The Hobbit was a mistake. ---------- Listen to Carla on her podcast, WSTR: Galactic Public Access ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! 11 Jul 2023 | REVISITED - Hellraiser (1987/2022) - Exploring the Dark and Twisted World of Pinhead and the Cenobites | 01:26:43
This week we take a look back at the Hellraiser roundtable discussion where we compare the 1987 original Hellraiser and the 2022 remake, highlighting their respective storylines and themes. Hellraiser 1987 takes us on a twisted love story intertwined with supernatural elements, while Hellraiser 2022 immerses us in a dark and mysterious contemporary party. Both versions offer their own take on Pinhead and the Cenobites, capturing the essence of the Hellraiser story. In the 1980s, Pinhead was a British dude with pins in his head. While his appearance was certainly unique, his character didn't strike fear into my heart. Maybe it was the voice that just sounded too masculine and normal. It lacked that eerie distortion that I expect from a horror character. Plus, let's be honest, I've known people who look like that guy in real life. But fast forward to the modern day Pinhead, and it's a whole different story. The design is more horror chic, and it genuinely terrifies me. The new Pinhead looks alien, otherworldly. I appreciate that they moved away from the fully BDSM style and embraced a more androgynous aesthetic. In this new portrayal, Pinhead is genuinely creepy as fuck, and that's exactly what I want from this character. It's a refreshing take and a departure from the original, but in a good way. Whether you're a long-time fan of Hellraiser or new to the franchise, our podcast offers a comprehensive exploration of the original and remake, Pinhead's character evolution, and the importance of trans representation in film and television.
