20 Feb 2024Simplifying decisions: Craig Groeschel on leading a God-honoring life00:37:52

Guess who’s back on our podcast this week? The incredible Pastor Craig Groeschel. If you caught his last episode with us (which we'll link for you), you know you’re in for a treat, as the pastor of Life Church in Tulsa, OK, the voice behind The Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast, and the author of 15 books, Pastor Craig shares so much wisdom and insight with us.

But today, we're diving into themes from his latest book, Think Ahead: 7 Decisions You Can Make Today for the God-Honoring Life You Want to Live Tomorrow.

As parents, we juggle countless decisions daily, often feeling overwhelmed by these choices’ sheer volume and weight. Pastor Craig joins us with a message of hope and strategy: the power of pre-deciding.

Craig’s message is a breath of fresh air for any parent feeling weighed down by the day-to-day decisions. It's a call to focus on what truly matters - our relationship with our kids and leading a life that honors God’s plan for us and our families. In this conversation we cover:

  • The challenge of decision-making: why making decisions feels so daunting and how this impacts our family life.
  • The art of pre-deciding: Craig shares how pre-deciding on certain aspects of our lives can significantly simplify our decision-making, making consistency with our kids more attainable.
  • Reflecting family values: our decisions paint a picture of what we value as a family. Craig helps us see how our choices can reflect the God-honoring life we aspire to live.
  • Prioritizing relationships: above efficiency, structure, or image, Craig reminds us that our relationship with our kids should always take precedence.

I promise you this conversation with Craig is enlightening and incredibly uplifting. It’s a reminder that, despite the challenges of parenting, there are strategies we can adopt to make the journey less burdensome and more fulfilling.

05 Sep 2023How understanding God's character changes our parenting with Ruth Chou Simons00:34:46

You know that friend who you can go to coffee with and after an hour or two together, you just feel lighter? That’s the type of friend that I’m pretty sure Ruth Chou Simons is. She is joining me on the podcast today and I know you will leave feeling refreshed, encouraged, filled with the Holy Spirit, and a little bit lighter.

Ruth is a bestselling and award-winning author of several books and Bible studies. She is an artist, podcaster, speaker, a wife, and a mom of 6 boys. Her latest book is Pilgrim: 25 Ways God’s Character Leads Us Onward

Ruth is so gentle in her encouragement and her wisdom. She reminds us of our need for God and that we are not meant to feel at home here on earth because we are pilgrims on a journey to a deeper relationship with Jesus. We also talk about how our job as parents is to steward our time with our kids in a way that honors God, why we often strive for control and perfection, the importance of sitting in God’s word, and how we can slowly grow into what God calls us to do.

I hope you love this conversation with Ruth.

03 Oct 2023Your marriage has a purpose with Aaron and Jennifer Smith00:34:06

Our marriages are the foundations of our families, but with the busyness of parenting, it can be easy to overlook them! We know date nights are important, but they are hard to schedule with schedules and finances. We know praying together is important, but it can feel awkward sometimes!

My guests today, Aaron and Jennifer Smith, are here to talk about praying in our marriages and finding purpose in our marriages. Aaron and Jennifer are the voices behind Marriage After God. They co-host the Marriage After God podcast, wrote the books Husband After God and Wife After God, and their latest book is The Marriage Gift.

Today, Aaron and Jennifer challenge us to rethink the purpose of marriage and share how to find purpose in your own marriage. They remind us that our marriage is a ministry and should always reflect the love of God. We also discuss why praying as a couple can sometimes be hard and what you can do to make it easier.

I hope you love this episode and I challenge you to listen to it and then ask your spouse, how you can use your marriage, talents, and resources to serve God’s kingdom around you?

07 Jan 2025Are you overparenting? with Courtney DeFeo00:41:55

This week’s episode is packed with insights and practical advice for navigating the complexities of parenting during the middle school years. I’m joined by Courtney DeFeo, and together we dive into balancing love, independence, and the continuous learning process of parenting.

Here are four key takeaways from this episode:

  • Parenting evolves as children grow, and middle school years often require creative ways to re-engage with your kids.
  • Allowing children to experience failure helps them develop responsibility and confidence.
  • Overparenting can hinder independence—parents should guide their children through problems, not shield them from them.
  • Self-care for parents is crucial to maintaining balance and avoiding guilt in the parenting journey.

Courtney DeFeo is the host of the Pardon the Mess podcast here on the Christian Parenting Podcast Network where she encourages parents every week to be the imperfectly perfect parent God created them to be. She is also an author, speaker, and advocate for empowering parents to create lasting family connections. With her relatable approach and passion for practical parenting, Courtney inspires families to navigate challenges with grace and joy.

06 Jun 2023Being honest with yourself and God with Jennifer Dukes Lee00:35:24

Jennifer Dukes Lee is joining me today and we are talking all about vulnerability. It’s hard to be vulnerable with other parents when it comes to our kids and sometimes it’s hard to be vulnerable with God! But today Jennifer talks with us about why vulnerability matters and how being truthful and open with God can change your parenting.

Jennifer has a guided journal called Stuff I’d Only Tell God that gives the space and prompts to help you be completely honest with yourself and God. So of course, we talk about the art of journaling and we have some fun at the end hearing some of Jennifer’s favorite and least favorite things.

14 Mar 2023Everyone can be a theologian with Phylicia Masonheimer00:31:05

This week we have Phylicia Masonheimer on The Christian Parenting Podcast. Phylicia is a blogger, author, speaker, and podcast host who teaches Christians how to know what they believe and live it boldly.

Phylicia and I break down the idea that theology is an intimidating subject reserved for professors and pastors. In fact, everyone can and should be studying theology because what we believe about God informs everything we do—from how we think, what career we choose, and how we parent. Phylicia defines theology, gives us resources for studying, and even shares how to talk to kids of all ages about theology.

29 Aug 2023The lies we believe about anxiety with Courtney Devich00:28:46

3am is when I do all my best worrying. I realize that is not a good or healthy thing, but as someone who has battled anxiety, those middle of the night worries are a real thing! Anxiety is on the rise in kids and in adults, which is why we are talking about it for the second week in a row.

This week I am joined by Courtney Devich who is a mom of three and the author of the book Mama’s Got Anxiety, but it’s not Gonna Steal my Joy. This book is real, vulnerable, relatable, and sometimes even funny as Courtney shares her real life struggles with anxiety and finding joy in the Lord, no matter what her emotions are telling her.

Today we are talking about some of the lies that moms believe about themselves when they experience worry or anxiety, how we can combat those lies, what to do when you’re up in the middle of the night and your brain is going a million miles an hour, and how we can reclaim our joy no matter what situation we are in.

I hope you are reminded that God is the source of all our joy and he is faithful no matter what.

14 Nov 2023Raising confident kids vs. kids who need to perform with Terra Mattson00:35:07

Terra Mattson is a dear friend of Christian Parenting and someone I really look up to as both a mom and a woman of faith, so I cannot wait for you to hear from her today.

Terra is a licensed marriage and family therapist and executive coach who authored Courageous: Being Daughters Rooted in Grace and partnered with Christian Parenting to develop the Helping Moms Raise Confident Daughter Courses.

Today we talk about performance based parenting…what is performance based parenting and how do we know if we are doing it? The truth is being human is messy and it doesn’t always look perfect so sometimes we try to become perfect and performance based---but the message of the gospel is the opposite of that. So how do we raise our kids with this in mind? How do we help them through struggles and point them to Jesus and his grace? We also talk about the importance of doing our own work in this area so that we can help our kids discover their identity in Christ.

You will love this conversation!

With love,

Steph Thurling

13 Feb 2024Discipling through the empty nest: a heartfelt journey with Pamela Henkleman00:35:49

As we wrap up our discipleship series, today's episode takes us into the heartfelt world of parenting adult children. I'm joined by Pamela Henkleman, a beacon of wisdom for mid-life moms, to explore this unique stage of our parenting journey.

In our conversation, Pamela offers some incredible insights:

  • Navigating the empty nest: Understanding the transition from full house to empty nest and what this means for our daily lives.
  • Discipling adult children: How Pamela discipled her own children, reflections on what she'd do differently, and the evolution of parenting styles as children grow into adulthood.
  • Facing the prodigal reality: Addressing the heartache and hope when children stray from their faith, despite our best efforts.
  • The importance of unconditional love: Emphasizing love over judgment and meeting our children where they are with humility and tenderness.
  • Embracing our role: Recognizing that while we guide and disciple, perfection is not the goal – God is the perfect parent, intricately involved in our and our children's stories.

Pamela reminds us of a powerful perspective that I believe we all need to hear:

"Help me not to judge my kids for where they are at. Judging them is not my job, my job is to love them, help me to love. Humility and tenderness go a long way."

This quote encapsulates the essence of today's discussion and serves as a gentle reminder of our role as parents, no matter the age of our children. This episode is not just for those of us approaching or navigating the empty nest phase; it's a timeless reminder of the enduring nature of parental love.

Don't forget, our Discipleship Simplified guide is here to support you at every stage of your family's faith journey!

09 Apr 2024Navigating loneliness with grace with Max Lucado00:26:43

I am honored to share a conversation with someone who has touched the hearts of many through his words and wisdom—Pastor Max Lucado. We discuss his latest children’s book, Just In Case You Ever Feel Alone, a project born from his desire to speak into the lives of young ones experiencing loneliness and uncertainty. As a father to adult children and a grandfather, Pastor Max's insights are not just based on theory but are lived and breathed experiences.

This conversation with Pastor Max Lucado reminds us of the gentle strength that comes from understanding our worth in God's eyes and the importance of instilling this truth in our children.

Here are a few of the reminders and insights Pastor Max shares:

  • The Importance of Family: Pastor Max underscores the foundational role family plays in providing security and belonging.
  • Quality Time with Our Kids: We discuss strategies for creating meaningful connections with our children, even amidst busy schedules.
  • Addressing Loneliness: Pastor Max shares his insights on the loneliness epidemic and offers guidance on supporting our kids through their emotional journeys.

25 Mar 2025Preparing for the College Years with Dr. Greg Jones00:37:59

Hey there!

This week’s conversation is one that got me thinking ahead—way ahead. While my oldest is still in middle school, college feels like it’s going to be here before I know it. That’s why I’m so grateful to have *Dr. Greg Jones*, president of Belmont University, on the podcast today to talk about helping our kids prepare for life beyond high school with purpose, faith, and community at the center.

Here are four key takeaways from this episode:

—Choosing a school isn’t about prestige—it’s about finding a place where your child can grow, thrive, and live out their calling.

—Relationships formed during the college years play a vital role in shaping a student’s identity and faith.

—Not getting into a dream school isn’t the end—it can be a redirection toward God’s best.

—Each child’s path is unique, and our job is to guide them with patience, grace, and a big-picture mindset.

Dr. Greg Jones is the president of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. With a background in theology, leadership, and education, Dr. Jones is passionate about helping students discover their God-given purpose and equipping families to think beyond rankings and toward flourishing futures.

This episode is full of wisdom for parents at every stage. Whether college is around the corner or years away, I hope it encourages you to guide your kids with faith and intentionality.

With love,

Steph Thurling

27 Jun 2023Teaching Kids About God’s Diverse Kingdom with Dorena Williamson00:29:55

I love children’s books because even though they are meant for kids, I always get something out of their messages. Sometimes the beauty and simplicity of the text and illustrations brings me to tears! One of my all time favorite children’s book authors is Dorena Williamson. We have many of her books throughout our house, so I was so excited to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with her!

Dorena is the author of 8 children’s books, her most current book is called I Know Who I am, which is all about teaching kids their identity in Christ from a young age. We get to hear about her heart behind the book and the illustrations on each page.

Dorena is passionate about celebrating multiculturalism and diversity so we have a really good conversation about those things—why diversity matters, how to talk about representation and diversity with your kids, and how it all points back to God and how he made all his children in his image.

17 Oct 2023Creating family faith traditions with Danielle Hitchen00:32:06

Most of us probably don’t think about church history in our everyday lives, but there is a lot that we can learn about our faith from studying church history and it doesn’t need to be boring!

Our guest today, Danielle Hitchen, wrote a book called Sacred Seasons that is part theology, part church history, and part practical spirituality. In it Danielle provides an easy-to-use guide to observing the liturgical year complete with fun activities, delicious recipes, and meaningful liturgies.

Today we talk about the church calendar and the history behind many of the holidays that we celebrate as Christians today. Danielle touches on how the church calendar can help us create really fun and memorable faith traditions with our kids, she shares some practical things you can do with your kids to incorporate faith in everyday life, and she shares how church history can help inform our decision about if and how we celebrate Halloween.

Her explanation of things like the church calendar, saints, and the origins of holidays was really interesting to me and I think you will find it interesting as well!

02 Apr 2024Creating a home where kids thrive with Melissa Kruger00:36:05

In this week’s episode, I have the pleasure of sitting down with Melissa Kruger, a wise and experienced voice in parenting and discipleship. As the vice president of The Gospel Coalition’s discipleship program and a mother to three adult children, Melissa brings wisdom and practical insights. Our conversation centers around her book, Parenting with Hope, and we really get into the nuances of parenting teens and children of all ages.

Melissa offers a refreshing perspective on building and maintaining strong relationships with our children. She emphasizes the importance of parenting from a foundation of values and principles, highlighting the need for us to take responsibility for our own reactions and actions. Her reminder to focus on grace and to trust in the journey God has us on is both comforting and empowering.

Here are some of my insights that Melissa shares:

  • Parenting from Values and Principles: Melissa discusses how parenting guided by core values and principles can foster a nurturing environment for children to grow and flourish.
  • The Role of Grace and Warmth: Emphasizing the power of grace, warmth, and welcome, Melissa illustrates how these elements can transform our home life and relationships with our children.
  • Trusting in God’s Word and Prayer: At the heart of our discussion is the reminder to parent with hope, leaning on prayer and God’s promises. Melissa encourages us to see parenting as a long game, where faithfulness in prayer and trust in God’s plan is paramount.

Whether you’re in the thick of parenting teens or preparing for the years ahead, Melissa’s insights offer a path to a more connected, faithful, and hopeful parenting experience.

Today’s episode is a blend of humor and heart with the delightful Molly Stillman as our guest. Many of you might know Molly from her podcast, Can I Laugh on Your Shoulder?, or her newly released memoir, If I Don't Laugh I'll Cry. Beyond her roles in the media, Molly is a dedicated mom with an incredible journey to share.

Molly’s story is a testament to the power of grace, laughter, and faith in the parenting journey. From her childhood to finding faith later in life, and now in her approach to parenting, Molly opens up about the realities of navigating life’s ups and downs.

Today, we dive into some truly meaningful discussions:

  • Imperfect parenting: Molly shares her take on the beauty and challenges of parenting with authenticity, including the importance of apologizing to our kids when we fall short.
  • Modeling a faith-filled life: we explore what it means to live out our faith in a way that our children can see, learn from, and be inspired by.
  • Finding balance: Molly discusses the delicate act of sheltering our kids from the world while also exposing them to culture in a way that’s healthy and constructive.

04 Jul 2023Celebrating our kids for who they are with Nicole Zasowski00:28:11

Happy Fourth of July!

This week we have Nicole Zasowski on The Christian Parenting Podcast and we are talking all about celebration in our families and our parenting. Nicole is a mom of three, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and author of the books From Lost to Found and What if it’s Wonderful?

We so often tie celebration and joy to accomplishment or milestones. But what if that is not the way it is supposed to be? Nicole challenges our typical idea of celebration and helps us understand it as a discipline, which is actually really liberating, especially as a mom.

One thing we touch on is how and when to celebrate our kids. I’m working on this in my own home – I’m trying to be intentional to encourage my kids in a way that will build them up for who God made them to be, not what they accomplish. It can be hard to do because we naturally want to emphasize the amazing things that our kids do! And that’s good, we should, but Nicole gives us some great examples of helpful things we can say to our kids to celebrate them for who they are.

As a bonus for our listeners, Nicole created an adorable handout of 8 prompts to use to celebrate personhood over performance! Just click here to download your copy!

You will love what she has to say.

05 Dec 2023Helping siblings forgive one another with Courtney DeFeo00:38:41

If your house is anything like mine, you are all too familiar with rushed and fake apologies. Siblings get in a fight and one apologized to the other under their breath while rolling their eye at the same time. Can you relate?

Today I am joined by my friend, Courtney DeFeo, and she is helping us emphasize forgiveness in our houses. Courtney and her husband, Ron, decided forgiveness was going to be one of their core family values so today she is sharing how to prioritize and model forgiveness in our homes.

Courtney and I also touch on the challenge of raising our oldest kids (because we don’t know what we are doing), the difference between conviction and shame, and how you have to decide what is helpful in your parenting vs. what is harmful and making you feel shame.

I love how she encourages us to quit comparing ourselves to other moms—God made us all unique to parent our own unique kids and we can rest in that.

Courtney is the host of Pardon the Mess, an author, a speaker, a mom of two teenage daughters, wife to Ron, and a proud dog mom. I have the joy of calling her friend and you will too after this episode. Make sure to listen until the end because I ask her some rapid fire questions and you will love what she says!

12 Sep 2023Raising Kind Daughters with Kari Kampakis00:30:14

I grew up with two sisters so coming from an all-girl family, I was completely unprepared to have two sons. But as soon as I felt adjusted to life as a boy mom, I had a daughter! Raising a daughter is everything I always dreamed it would be, and also as challenging as I imagined it would be. Which is why I am so grateful for wise experts like today’s guest, Kari Kampakis.

Kari is a mom of four girls, the host of the Girl Mom podcast, and author of several books including, More Than a Mom and Love Her Well.

While being a girl is so different today than it was when we were growing up, some things remain relatively the same and one of those things is the challenge of learning to navigate friendships. Today Kari and I cover some of the messaging that girls receive about themselves and how we can reframe those messages, how to raise kind daughters, the importance of speaking truth over our girls, how to navigate friendships, and Kari reminds us that it all goes back to Jesus. I hope you enjoy this conversation!

12 Dec 2023Staying true to your calling with Colton Dixon00:30:54

Today I am joined by Colton Dixon. Colton is an American Idol finalist and Christian singer/songwriter. His music has won numerous awards and he has had the opportunity to perform in some incredible places. Most importantly, Colton is a husband and the dad of two three year old girl twins.

Colton has so much to share about how his faith has influenced his parenting and his music, how we are here to serve, not be served, why we need to steward our time and abilities well, and he reminds us that our identity is not how others see us, but our identity is in Christ. He also shares what he was like as a kid and encourages parents who are raising creative and passionate kids: hint, is has less to do with parenting right and more to do with the time you spend.

I love at the very beginning when he gives Biblical encouragement for all the parents who sometimes have to travel for work. God sees you and is full of grace!

We also talk about Christmas traditions at the end, so listen all the way through!

21 Nov 2023A new perspective on Thanksgiving with Raymond Arroyo00:28:12

Hi Friends!

We have a fun interview today, just in time for Thanksgiving! Most of us know that there is a funny little tradition for the President to pardon a turkey on Thanksgiving day. But do you know where that tradition came from? It actually started with Abraham Lincoln and his son, Tad. My guest today Raymond Arroyo wrote a children’s book that tells the story!

Today Raymond and I talk about how we are parenting in a challenging time, but we can learn from parents who have gone before us, the influence we have in our kids lives and the influence they have in ours, how Abraham Lincoln grew in faith over the years, what he meant Thanksgiving to be, and what mercy means for us and our kids.

I hope this episode gives you a unique perspective on my personal favorite holiday! I put a link for mirliton dressing below, so you can try a new recipe this year!

Remember that, at its core, Thanksgiving is about unity, mercy, and the family we are blessed with. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

With love,

Steph

What age should we start talking to our kids about pornography?

How do we explain it to them?

How should the conversation change as my kids grow?

This is Greta’s second time on the podcast and I am so glad to have her back! This episode was fun because we were able to record in person in my studio!

Greta and I cover all the difficult, but important things about parenting in the age of pornography. We talk about how Greta became a leading voice in empowering parents to talk to their kids about pornography, why pornography is a problem in homes, but also in the church, how the pornography industry is working to make porn accessible to kids, and how we can fight against that.

We get really practical in this episode as Greta gives us scripts for how we can talk about this topic age by age (from young kids to high schoolers) and how to talk to our kids if and when they are exposed to pornography. We also talk about how to help our kids enter the world of technology safely

This is a really important episode that you do not want to miss!

08 Aug 2023Modern motherhood is broken and what we can do about it with Alli Worthington00:33:28

If you have ever felt overwhelmed, burnt out, inadequate, or discouraged as a mom, this episode is for you! Alli Worthington is joining me today and we are talking about how modern motherhood is broken and what we can do to fix it.

Alli emphasizes how important self-awareness is as a mom. She challenges mothers to ask themselves: what is my mothering style? What things trigger mom guilt? And what can I do to change this? Alli reminds us that parenting priorities vary from mom to mom and that’s okay because God made us each so unique and he gave us unique kids as well! She challenges us to drop the comparison game and lean into the life that God has called us to with the giftings he has blessed us with.

You are going to adore Alli. She is a wife, a mom, an author, business coach, and podcaster. She is straightforward, yet encouraging. Approachable and real, but convicting in a good way. She’s the best mom-friend we all need!

16 Jan 2024Discipling our kids doesn’t have to be intimidating with Sarah Holmstrom00:39:01

Today, we are starting a brand new series on The Christian Parenting Podcast. Over the next few weeks, we're diving into an incredibly important topic: discipling your kids to know, love, and follow Jesus. This series will be a deep dive into prayer, the Holy Spirit, and teaching our kids to love Jesus. We are even tackling the hard truth that we can do “all the right things” and our older children could choose a different path. We're covering it all!

To kick off this series, I'm thrilled to sit down with my dear friend, Sarah Holmstrom. Many of you might know us from our ministry, Raising Prayerful Kids, and our book of the same name. Sarah and I have journeyed together in ministry for many years, and her insights have been a blessing to me and so many others.

In today's episode, Sarah and I are diving into the complexities of discipling our children, especially considering how different each child can be. It's a challenge that every parent faces. We answer the questions:

  • How do we tailor our approach to fit each child’s unique needs and personalities?
  • What does daily discipleship look like, for me and for my family?
  • Does praying for our children really make a difference?

We'll explore these topics and share personal experiences and practical advice.

Sarah's wisdom is something I cherish, and I know you will, too. This conversation is not just informative but also incredibly reassuring. It reminds us that in the midst of our efforts and uncertainties, God's grace is sufficient.

So, whether you're a parent trying to navigate these waters for the first time or you've been at this for a while, this episode is for you. Join us as we embark on this journey, discussing how to disciple our kids in the way that best suits each of them and exploring the power and impact of discipleship in our children's lives.

P.S. Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and leave a review if you find this series helpful. Your feedback means the world to us and helps other parents find this resource. Stay tuned for more episodes that will empower and inspire you in your parenting journey. Let's learn and grow together in raising kids who love Jesus. See you in the episode!

11 Feb 2025Overcoming people pleasing with Jinger Vuolo00:25:37

This week’s episode is extra special because we are celebrating two years of the Christian Parenting Podcast! I can’t believe it! And to make it even more special, my very first guest, Jinger Vuolo, is back with us today. She’s here to talk about the struggles so many of us face in trying to meet others’ expectations.

Here are four key takeaways from this episode:

  • Trying to please everyone can actually be more about ourselves than truly serving others.
  • Showing up as your true self, rather than what others expect, is a way to glorify God.
  • Jinger shares how she is beginning to guide her own children away from people-pleasing tendencies.
  • We discuss real ways to break free from people-pleasing and the importance of finding a strong mentor.

Jinger Vuolo is an author, speaker, and former reality TV personality known for her book Becoming Free Indeed and her latest release, People Pleaser. She is passionate about helping others find freedom in Christ and live with confidence in who God made them to be.

Thank you all for two incredible years of this podcast! I’m so grateful for you, and I hope this conversation encourages you to seek confidence in Christ rather than in the approval of others.

19 Sep 2023Family Faith Rhythms with Kayla Craig00:33:23

It is always a joy to be joined by one of our Christian Parenting Podcast Network hosts. Each host brings something special to the network and Kayla Craig is no exception! She has a heart for helping families slow down and grow spiritually alongside each other.

Kayla is the host of the podcast, Liturgies for Parents and the author of To Light Their Way. Her new book is called Every Season Sacred and it’s an invitation for families to slow down, ask questions, and grow closer to Jesus in an intentional way.

Today Kayla and I talk about the difference between being a consumer Christian and a Christian who is active in faith and relationship with Jesus, how to care for our own souls so we can live into our values and bring our kids into a faith journey, and how family faith rhythms and liturgies can help us connect with Jesus and each other as a family.

I really love the question she challenges us to think about for our own families: what do we want people to see in our family that makes them realize we are different as followers of Jesus?

02 Jan 2024The busy-ness of parenting with Dina Deleasa-Gonsar00:36:36

I’m sure many of you are in the same season of parenting that I am in—busy. Every season of parenting is busy in its own way! It’s just amazing how it changes and changes so fast, yet remains busy.

My guest today, Dina Deleasa-Gonsar totally gets it and is here to talk about it!

Dina is the creator, writer, speaker, and television personality behind the popular food blog DishItGirl.com. Dina is known for sharing her family traditions and modern twists on recipes along with an inside look at her real-life as a mom and wife.

Today Dina and I talk about the overwhelm of parenting, managing activities and setting boundaries, and how social media adds to the pressure of doing it all and doing it perfectly. Dina reminds us that re-prioritizing so you don’t burn out from the busy is good, but sometimes you have to take inventory of what you and your family is doing.

I love what she shares about making sure we prioritize faith, church and Jesus just like we prioritize activities. Because God is faithful in the busy and when our kids grow up and the activities end, Jesus will stay.

Listen to the end because Dina gives us some tips for meal planning and shares her favorite ideas for those busy weeknights!

23 Jan 2024How to explain the Holy Spirit to kids with Christie Thomas00:27:22

Are you ready for week 2 of our exciting series on discipling kids?! Today, we're diving into a topic that I find both fascinating and challenging: explaining the Holy Spirit to our children. It’s abstract, a bit tough to grasp, and that's exactly why I want us to understand it better. I believe that with a clearer understanding, we can talk to our kids about the Holy Spirit in a way that's easier and less intimidating for all of us!

Joining me today is the incredible Christie Thomas, author of Fruit Full. Christie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our discussion. She has spent years teaching kids about Jesus, and now she's here to help us do the same. She’s not only a gifted author but also a devoted wife and mom. Currently homeschooling her three sons, Christie's passion for children’s ministry shines through in everything she does.

Today we'll explore who the Holy Spirit is and, just as importantly, who he is not. We'll address some common misconceptions and discuss how we can explain his role and the fruit of the Spirit to our kids. I know it sounds like a lot, but trust me, this conversation is enlightening and incredibly helpful.

One of my favorite parts of today's talk is when we dive into how we often teach our kids about the fruit of the Spirit in relation to behavior and morals. Christie points out a crucial aspect – we might be missing the mark if we stop there. This discussion is practical, helpful, and I truly believe it will be beneficial for both you and your children.

So, don’t let the complexity of today’s topic keep you from tuning in. Join us, learn, and be encouraged by our friend Christie Thomas. And if you're looking to deepen your journey in discipleship, don’t forget to check out Christie's book, Fruit Full, it is a great devotional

Remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave a review if you find this episode valuable. Your support helps us reach more parents like you, looking for guidance and encouragement in their parenting journey. Stay tuned for more enriching discussions in our series. Thanks for listening, and let's grow together in faith and parenting!

15 Aug 2023God’s presence changes everything with Susie Larson00:40:32

God’s presence is big. It’s in every nook and cranny in our lives. But as parents, we often miss his presence because we wait for him in the big moments: the birth of our children, first steps, graduation day, wedding days. The truth is, so much of life and parenting is made up of small, simple, and sometimes boring moments: making snacks, playing catch, picking up toys, and driving around town. God is with us in all of those moments and everywhere in between.

Susie Larson is joining me today to talk about God’s presence. Her newest book, Closer Than Your Next Breath: Where is God When you Need Him Most?, helps readers experience God's trustworthiness and love—even when they feel far from him.

Susie and I talk about experiencing God’s presence and goodness in the midst of the noise of parenting, why it’s important to teach your kids to look for and remember God’s miracles in their life, what happens when your parenting ideals don’t come to fruition and your kids don’t walk with God, and how to reframe our thoughts to focus on God’s goodness instead of our disappointments.

Susie is a prayer warrior and a mighty woman of faith. She has been an amazing source of encouragement in my life and I know you will feel the same. Make sure to listen until the end so you can hear Susie’s blessing for us!

19 Mar 2024Cultivating resilience: Dr. Charles Fay on Raising Mentally Strong Kids00:32:15

In today’s episode, we get into a topic that’s close to my heart and, I suspect, a challenge for many of us: watching our kids face challenges. As much as we want to shield them from hardship, we know deep down that overcoming challenges is crucial to their growth.

To explore this conundrum, I’m joined by Dr. Charles Fay, president of the Love and Logic Institute and co-author of Raising Mentally Strong Kids with Dr. Daniel Amen.

Dr. Fay is both knowledgeable and compassionate, emphasizing that perfection is not the goal of parenting. Instead, he encourages us to embrace the messiness and challenges of family life as opportunities for growth, both for our children and ourselves.

Here are some of the topics we cover:

  • The Importance of Challenges: Dr. Fay shares how trials can lead to personal growth and foster a closer relationship with God and family.
  • Mental Health and Young People: We discuss the concerning trends in mental health among youth today, with a particular focus on the impact of technology and the importance of teaching kids to resist unhealthy influences.
  • Practical Parenting Tips: Dr. Fay offers actionable advice on setting limits, encouraging good decision-making, and nurturing mental strength in our children.
  • Guidance from God: Perhaps most heartening is Dr. Fay’s reminder to lean on our faith, focus on key principles, and seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our parenting journey.

Dr. Fay’s wisdom is both encouraging and practical, equipping us with the tools to raise resilient, mentally strong kids. His insights remind us that while we cannot protect our children from every hardship, we can empower them to navigate life’s challenges with grace and strength.

Thank you for joining me in this important conversation. Here’s to embracing the trials, teaching resilience, and trusting in God’s plan for our children’s lives.

11 Jul 2023Surviving the car without screens with JJ Campbell00:33:58

I spend a lot of time in my car. There are days I feel like an Uber driver, taking my kids from activity to activity all day long! And while car behavior and fighting has gotten better as my kids have grown, the car can still be a pretty stressful place! But, it’s summer and a lot of us are doing road trips, so my guest today is here to help us out!

JJ Campbell is the host of the Along for the Ride Podcast, which is a family friendly game show on our Christian Parenting Podcast network and is a Thurling family favorite! JJ loves helping parents connect with their kids through simple games, celebrating togetherness, and bringing play back to the forefront for kids!

In this episode we talk about JJ’s podcast, why she started it, her heart for families connecting with each other, and how we can use the time we spend with our kids in the car as a time to get to know them and reinforce our family values. We even spend some time playing one of the games that JJ plays on the podcast!

I love how JJ emphasizes that there is a time and a place for screens, but we need boundaries. There is no guilt here, just fun ideas to help engage your kids in unique and entertaining ways!

19 Dec 2023The big questions our boys ask with Katy Boatman00:28:47

What if I mess my kids up?

What if I fail at my job?

What if I’m actually doing it all wrong?

These are some of the “what if” questions that I wrestle with. I think we all have big “what if” questions, they’re all just a little different depending on our experiences, wiring, and situations.

Our kids have questions like this too and my guest today, Katy Boatman, is here to walk us through that. Katy is a writer and marketer, but her favorite role is being an aunt to Shelby, Blake, and Ellie. Katy has spent fifteen years mentoring girls through student ministry, and she is passionate about helping them understand who God is and reminding them they are not alone.

Katy’s devotional, You Can Trust, addresses many of the questions boys have from what if my team loses? to what if God changes his mind about me? And the answers always point back to God’s enduring faithfulness.

Today Katy and I are talking about preteen boys and the “what if” questions they wrestle with, the need kids have for stability and truth as they grow up and ask questions, how girls and boys learn about and respond to God differently, and the need for devotionals and other resources for preteen boys.

I hope this is helpful for both boy moms and girl moms, too! Girl moms, check out Katy’s devotional just for preteen girls!

While parenting, working, and the whirlwind of daily life, it's easy for marriage—the very foundation of our family life—to slide to the back burner. But our marriages are critical and so today's episode is dedicated to nurturing this foundational relationship.

I am thrilled to be joined by Arlene Pellicane, a renowned marriage and family speaker, host of the Happy Home Podcast, and author of books like 31 Days to a Happy Husband and "31 Days to Becoming a Happy Wife.

Arlene and I discuss why fewer young adults choose marriage over living together and the significance of long-term thinking in nurturing marital bonds that survive and thrive. Here's what we cover:

- The Changing State of Marriage: Exploring the shifts in how young adults view marriage and cohabitation.

- The Importance of Long-Term Thinking: We discuss making decisions that will benefit our marriages in the long haul, beyond the immediate moments of joy or challenge.

- Modeling a Healthy Marriage: Parents’ critical role is demonstrating what a loving, committed relationship looks like to their children.

- Practical Tips for Busy Parents: Arlene shares invaluable advice on strengthening your marriage amidst the chaos of parenting, including the importance of daily connections, weekly dates, and regular getaways.

Arlene's insights are incredibly helpful for couples seeking to deepen their connection and ensure their marriage remains a source of joy, strength, and stability in their family life. Her practical tips offer actionable steps that busy parents can take to reconnect, rejuvenate, and reaffirm their commitment to each other.

Our conversation is a gentle reminder that while parenting is an all-consuming role, the health of our marriage significantly impacts our family's well-being. Arlene's guidance provides a roadmap for couples to navigate the complexities of modern marriage with grace, intention, and a lot of love!

21 Jan 2025Faith, family, and special needs advocacy with Alicia and Kirsta Graf00:50:48

This week’s episode is extra special as I’m joined by two of my favorite people, Alicia and Kirsta Graf. They are a mother-daughter duo who inspire me deeply. Alicia shares her parenting journey with Kirsta, who has down syndrome, and the lessons she’s learned through adoption, loss, and raising three daughters. Kirsta is truly incredible—funny, joyful, and a shining light. Their story is heartfelt, inspiring, and filled with wisdom.

Here are four key takeaways from this episode:

  • Alicia emphasizes treating your family as a team and studying each child to meet their unique needs.
  • Relationships with those a season or two ahead in life can make a big difference in your parenting journey.
  • Kirsta’s journey—graduating from Bethel University, working at the school, and contributing to Jack’s Basket—shows the incredible potential of every child.
  • Parenting is full of surprises and challenges, requiring reliance on God and grace for yourself.

05 Mar 2024Where are you finding your identity? with Becky Beresford00:31:11

In this week’s episode, I am thrilled to share a conversation with a dear friend of mine, Becky Beresford. With over 15 years of experience working with women in ministry, Becky has dedicated her life to empowering women to live confidently in their God-given gospel identity.

Her passion for freeing others from the grips of shame, fear, anxiety, and insecurities is truly inspiring. Becky is author of the book She Believed HE Could, So She Did, a title that resonates with the power of faith and action.

Becky's insights into living an abundant life in and through Jesus are both enlightening and uplifting. Today, she shares with us the importance of replacing the all-too-common phrases of the world, like "You do you" and "Believe in yourself," with the unwavering truths of the gospel. It’s a conversation that digs deep into the pitfalls of self-reliance and celebrates the liberating freedom found in dependence on God.

Here’s what we dive into:

  • How understanding our identity in Christ sets us free from life’s burdens and empowers us to live fully.
  • The dangers of popular mantras that promote self-reliance over divine trust.
  • The freedom that comes from leaning on God rather than our own strength.
  • Practical advice on guiding our children to embrace their identity in Christ and depend on him.

This episode is for moms and anyone yearning for a shift from self-dependence to a life connected with Christ. Becky’s words are a call to action, inviting us to trade the fleeting assurances of the world for the everlasting truths of the gospel. May this conversation inspire you to reflect on the phrases shaping your life and encourage you to anchor your identity and confidence in the truths God declares over you.

31 Oct 2023Embracing God's plan for your life with Tabitha Schmitt00:34:26

Today I am joined by my friend Tabitha Schmitt, who has one of the most powerful stories of God’s faithfulness that I know. Tabby was 36 weeks pregnant with her second baby when she found out he would have extreme special needs. But God, in his goodness, took a story that the world would consider tragic and radically transformed her heart and changed the direction of her family forever.

Tabby is a wife, a mom of three, an artist, a children’s book author, a small business owner and is passionate about raising a generation of fiery warriors for God’s Kingdom.

Today Tabby and I talk about how God writes our stories, directs our paths, and prepares the way for us. He works all things together for good, even when we can’t figure out how. She encourages us that it’s okay to raise our kids in a way that is different from what the world views as “normal” because we are not supposed to be of the world anyway.

This story is so good, you don’t want to miss it!

06 Feb 2024Navigating Teen Faith: Lasting Discipleship with Brad Griffin00:42:04

I'm genuinely thrilled about the conversations we've been having, and I hope you are, too. So, let’s dive right into week four of our discipleship series. Today, we're shifting our focus towards a group with a special place in my heart: teenagers. Don’t be afraid; lean in, and let’s learn to disciple this age well!

Discipleship for teens is a unique journey that requires us to think deeply about how we can help them develop a faith that doesn't just survive but thrives beyond their youth group years. It's a challenging and incredibly important topic, so I'm excited to have Brad Griffin from The Fuller Youth Institute joining us today.

Brad and I dive into the Faith Beyond Youth Group book, an initiative based on extensive research into why many teens lose their faith after they leave home. This book and our conversation tackle the hard questions and offer insights into how we can better support our teens in their faith journey. In this episode Brad and I talk about:

  • the importance of teaching our kids the character of Christ. It's not just about head knowledge; it's about helping them see and experience Christ's character daily.
  • The crucial roles of authentic trust and identity in developing a solid faith foundation for our teens.
  • The value of leaning into our community. The support system within our faith communities can be a game-changer in our teens' discipleship journey.

This episode is packed with practical advice, encouragement, and the reminder that our efforts in discipling our teenagers are worth every moment. So, whether you're a parent of a teen, a youth leader, or someone who plays a significant role in a teen's life, this conversation is for you.

Before we wrap up, don't forget to check out our Discipleship Simplified guide, it is designed to support you in your faith journey with your family.

Thanks for tuning in to this week's episode. If you've found it helpful, please subscribe to the podcast and leave a review. Your feedback helps us reach more parents and guardians looking for guidance and inspiration. Let's continue to support each other in raising godly teenagers in an ever-changing world.

01 Aug 2023Discipling the next generation with Jen Wilkin and J.T. English00:30:09

We are tasked with the amazing and important role of discipling our kids in the Christian faith. In order to do this well we have to understand what we believe and why. We also need to be familiar with God’s Word. My guests today are here to talk about Bible study, theology, and why they are both important in discipling the next generation.

Jen Wilkin is a Bible teacher from Dallas, Texas. An advocate for Bible literacy, she has organized and led studies for women in homes, churches, and parachurch contexts.

J.T. English serves as a pastor, professor, and is an author. J. T. is passionate about seeing God glorified through discipleship in the context of the local church.

Their new, co-authored book, You Are A Theologian, addresses theological questions so that readers understand theology and become contributors to the conversation, and grow in faithfulness to the Great Commission’s call to make disciples.

J.T. and Jen help us understand the difference between Bible study and theology, how they work together, and why both are important. We also cover a lot of things about discipling the next generation. Jen and JT are in different seasons of parenting kids so their shared perspective and wisdom is encouraging and practical no matter what age your kids are.

22 Apr 2025Answering kids' hard questions - faith, science, and suffering with Justin Brierley00:40:03

Today’s episode is such a fascinating and encouraging conversation. I’m joined by Justin Brierley, journalist, author, and Christian apologist—and we’re diving into how we as parents can guide our kids through some of life’s biggest questions about faith, doubt, and belief.

Here’s what you’ll hear in today's conversation:

  • Helping kids ask honest questions about God and faith builds a stronger foundation for lasting belief.
  • Topics like the resurrection, suffering, and science can be discussed in age-appropriate and meaningful ways.
  • How we respond to questions is just as important as the answers we give—gentleness builds trust.
  • Sharing your personal faith and doubts can create a safe space for kids to explore theirs.

Justin Brierley is a UK-based journalist, speaker, and author who has spent years hosting thoughtful conversations around faith and skepticism. His book, Why I’m Still a Christian, explains why he still has faith in Jesus after conversations with skeptics and atheists all across the world. And his book, The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God, explores how faith is making a comeback in surprising ways. Justin is passionate about equipping parents to walk alongside their kids through questions of belief with wisdom and compassion.

Whether your child is full of curiosity or facing doubt, this episode offers the tools and encouragement to walk that road together with faith, honesty, and grace.
