10 Nov 2021Truth Telling and Self-Mercy with Elizabeth Gilbert01:01:59

“How many people do you know who are truly free?” Elizabeth Gilbert posed this question to me 2 years ago during our conversation to promote her book, City of Girls. The question, and the episode, have stayed with me.

I know very few truth tellers like Liz. Tied to anxiety and fear, work and stress, we put on faces to hide our true selves, people-please and value others’ priorities above our own. Liz talks openly about how she is breaking this mold and focusing on taking care of her mental health before beginning to help others.

As we take this time to reflect on the year, now is the time to ask yourself if you are living truthfully. Are you honest with yourself? Are you vulnerable? Do you have mercy for yourself? How do you take these aspirations into 2022 with you and learn to live truly free?

Enjoy!

26 Oct 2020The Art of Done00:16:00

Your conscious mind is a critic. If you rely on it too much while you’re working, you’ll struggle to make progress.

In this episode, I share a simple, repeatable process to finishing work you start without self-judgement weighing you down. The idea here isn’t to win the next high praise for your best work, it’s about taking whatever action you can, and repeat. Having your work recognized will come in due time. For now, the task is to continue honing the craft. Finish what you start. Choose action over intellect.

05 Oct 2020Jasmine Star: How to Grow Your Community00:25:50

Just a few days ago, my book Creative Calling hit it’s one year anniversary. And what a year it’s been.

One of my favorite things about the last year, has been the growing community pursuing their own calling and rallying behind creativity.  Community is critical for support, feedback, opportunities, and of course, celebrating those wins. Yet, it’s one of the most overlooked areas for creating success in any field.

So it seemed fitting to share this conversation I had last fall with my good friend Jasmine Star on cultivating our own personal community. If you’re not familiar with her work, let me catch you up. Jasmine Star is a photographer and a business strategist. After quitting law school, she picked up a camera and built a huge internationally recognized + respected photography business. Over the past few years, Jasmine has expanded her business to help entrepreneurs build a brand and market it on social media.

What I love about this conversation is Jasmine really taps into many of the commonly asked questions around cultivating community such as:

  • How to navigate social situations as an introvert
  • How to create real personal connection
  • The importance of consistency and continuing to show up
  • How to break through fear of what other people think
  • and so much more.

Today’s episode is part of a companion class for Creative Calling. If you missed the class, it’s available for FREE for anyone who purchased a book. You can grab it over at www.creativelive.com/creativecalling.

19 Dec 2018YES is for Wimps. Get Used to Hearing NO00:09:09

If you’re already a professional creator, then you know that you had to hear a lot of “no” for every “yes”. If you’re not yet a pro, or perhaps more importantly if you are a pro whose enjoyed a taste of success, then hear this: Get Used To Hearing “No”.

25 Jul 2022How to Stand Out and Build Job Experience for Higher Salaries00:07:36

Are you starting a new job? Making a career transition? I’ve received a number of inbound questions on this topic as new grads seek jobs and/or folks are in a career transition.

Two key topics:

  • Entering an Industry Without Experience
  • How to stand out
  • Negotiating a Higher Salary

It’s never comfortable starting something new and big when you’re inexperienced, but guess what? It’s not your job to become a master overnight. Nobody expects that of you and you shouldn’t place too high of expectations on yourself.

Of course if you've been in your career for awhile and looking for ways to increase your salary,  there are ways you can prepare for the conversation and give yourself a higher chance of success.

We get into both sides of the coin in the episode and if you have any other questions, feel free to text me at 206-309-5177.

30 Nov 2017Richard Branson: Lessons in Business and Life00:50:05

If there’s anyone qualified to lay out the blueprint for dreaming big, living life on your own terms and turning your passions into your career, it’s the iconic Sir Richard Branson. He’s fearlessly and boldly disrupted one industry after another as the founder of the Virgin Group, from publishing to airlines to creating Virgin Galactic (the world’s first commercial spaceliner), building an empire of more than 100 companies and 60,000 employees in over 50 countries.

Drawing threads from his new book, Finding My Virginity, we talk about some of his recent projects as well as the steps he took to get from one stepping stone to the next. Sit down with Sir Richard and I as he uses stories to break down prioritizing your life, setting goals, and how to choose what to pursue.

In today's episode,

  • It’s time to spin the nasty term “dyslexia” into a positive; let’s start calling it “alternative thinker.” Richard actually credits his alternative thinking to shape him into a master delegator, a skill that he credits much of his success to.
  • The recipe for a successful business boils down to this: spend lots of time on the things you care about, pay attention to what annoys you about how others are doing things, find a way to do it better.
  • The best leaders treat those they lead like family.

24 Apr 2024Strength Beyond Muscle: Are Old Habits Holding You Back? | Mark Bell01:28:25

In this episode, Mark Bell shares his journey from powerlifting to personal transformation and entrepreneurship. Mark Bell, a father of two and an inventor, is known in the fitness industry for his impressive powerlifting records and his invention of the Sling Shot. He also co-founded a bi-monthly magazine called Power with his wife Andee and owns The Strongest Gym In The West Super Training.

During the conversation, Mark delves into his transition from being a 330-pound powerlifter to running the Boston Marathon, demonstrating that strength and endurance are not mutually exclusive. He discusses the importance of becoming an expert in a field, in his case lifting, and how this expertise can open doors to other opportunities. Mark also touches on his entrepreneurial journey, creating products that help others achieve their fitness goals.

Mark Bell is a firm believer that strength is more than just physical muscle. He emphasizes that true strength is a holistic concept that involves not only physical power and endurance, but also mental fortitude, resilience, and determination. He argues that maintaining strength, in all its forms, is crucial to promoting overall health and making it possible to improve every day. In his view, strength is never a weakness and being weak is never beneficial.

Some highlights we explore:

- Mark's transition from powerlifting to running and his realization that strength and endurance can coexist.
- The concept of becoming a "material expert" and how that expertise can lead to success in other areas.
- Mark's entrepreneurial journey, from inventing the Sling Shot to launching a supplement brand.
- The importance of a growth mindset, and how Mark applies this to his personal and professional life.

21 Nov 2018Power of Gratitude - My Daily Practice00:20:29

I’m a huge believer that so much of ‘THE GAME’ is mental. Mindset is everything. I’ve shared my thoughts before on this podcast, on my youtube channel, and my blog about one of the most powerful tools in my toolbox to harness positivity in a seemingly tough situation: a daily gratitude practice. Many of you have asked me what that is, how I do it, and how you can start.

As we head into Thanksgiving here in the states, I wanted to dig a little bit deeper and actually walk you through my practice. You can listen in if your curious, or use it to jump start your own. If you’d like to fast forward directly to the guided practice, skip to about 6 minutes in the episode.

05 Feb 2020Pay Attention to What Ignites You with Jody MacDonald01:01:02

Imagine this: Your job is good, and safe, but it’s not fueling anymore. You decide to quit your “real” job and sell all your belongings to live a life of adventure. And just as you are waving your last goodbye, the unthinkable happens and it changes everything.

Like most of us, award winning photographer Jody MacDonald didn’t know what her path would be. Yet when her wake up call came, she listened. From train hopping in the Sahara to paragliding in the Himalaya, she's no stranger to adventure and exploration. Her work blends insightful storytelling, big adventure expeditions and social change in the hopes of promoting the preservation of wild places.  Men’s Journal named her “One of the 25 Most Adventures Women in the Past 25 Years and National Geographic said she’s one of the top female adventure photographers pushing the limits.

I've admired Jody's work from afar for years. Her life story and career arc is remarkable. It set her on a path to tackle some of the life’s biggest questions and what she has learned is pure gold.

In this episode:

  • Why waste your time on things that make you unhappy? What Jody does to tune into her inner compass
  • Trying to stand out? Put yourself into the shoes of the person evaluating your work
  • Social media is a double edge sword. Jody shares how she tries to manage it
  • How to harness life’s hardest lessons/tragedies and refocus on what really matters
  • And so much more…

You know the place I'm talking about: the messy nebulous phase of creativity in between vision and reality. It's where ideas get watered down and the unknown starts to creep in.

In this episode we dive a bit more into this nebulous process and discuss some strategies to help keep momentum up.

Some topics we get into:

  • Preparing your mindset for creative thinking
  • Creating space for your creative ideas
  • How to encourage creative ideas to flow
  • How to avoid overwhelm

13 Jun 2022No Artist Tolerates Reality00:10:26

The world would have you believe that creativity is an indulgence. “Get a real job” or “find something you’re good at” are a few common phrases that get thrown around. But so long as you do that, you’re on someone else's path. It isn't living your own life - it's following someone else's. Why spend your life that way when you could be seeing the world for what it really is?

In today’s episode, we’ll explore what Friedrich Nietzsche meant by his words "No artist tolerates reality" and why it’s fodder for artists like you and me, even today.

We’ll also dig into why:

  • Creators cannot tolerate the “status quo.”

  • Creativity is your birthright.

  • Reality is malleable and different for everyone.

  • Everything in this world was created by someone just like you.

  • When you choose creativity, you distort reality, introducing a part of you into it to make a change in the lives of others.

  • Establishing a creative practice is the only way to a creative life.

07 Sep 2020Stop Glamorizing Busy00:11:18

President Dwight D. Eisenhower often said that what is important is rarely urgent and what is urgent is rarely important.

I’ve found that the most badass people I know, the ones who are the best in the world at their craft, are rarely busy in the way we’ve been taught to think of it. Being busy is a disease, a terminal one. It destroys your precious time. Being effective is about using every minute thoughtfully and mindfully as you make steady progress toward your dream. The biggest surprise to me has been that those people, those creators who are so deliberate and planned in the way they work, are also incredibly joyful and playful while they work. Planning and play aren’t opposites; they complement each other beautifully.

Food for thought. Enjoy!

22 Nov 2017 Embracing Your Messy, Beautiful Life /w Glennon Doyle01:32:57

Glennon Doyle is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Love Warrior, and Carry On, Warrior. Glennon is also the founder of Momastery an online community reaching millions each week, and Together Rising—a non-profit organization that has raised seven million dollars for families around the world through its Love Flash Mobs, which have revolutionized online giving.

Prepare your ears for a healthy dose of honesty, as that’s what Glennon does best. She says things that others aren’t comfortable saying and does what she believes is true and beautiful, even under threat of career suicide. We talk about how perseverance, integrity and trust in her community made her a ten year overnight success and I know there’s some nuggets in here that’ll help you as you mine for the gold of life.

In today’s episode:

  • Glennon started writing every day. First to her friends, then on her blog. She talks about getting up at 4 am to write in her closet and hitting publish every day by 6. So many takeaways and about sharing before you have time to judge your work (and thusly not release it) and making creativity a habit.
  • Glennon has this saying I love, “And both”. This idea that life is not black and white. She says … Life is brutal. But it’s also beautiful. It’s Brutiful. Life’s brutal and beautiful are woven together so tightly that they can’t be separated. If you reject the brutal, you’re rejecting the beauty, too.
  • We talk about technology and social media and our constant need to check our phones. She tells the story of her son (also named Chase) and how he’s always on his phone, which she fears will prevent him from finding his interests. It’s a conversation I think so many of us are having, and refreshing to hear her take on it.

07 Jun 2017Overcome Fear & Self-Doubt w/ W. Kamau Bell00:52:46

W. Kamau Bell is a veteran standup comedian, the creator and star of the hit CNN show “United Shades Of America” which is kicking off its 2nd season, host of a couple podcasts, one of which has probably the best title of any podcast ever - “Denzel Washington Is The Greatest Actor Of All Time Period” - and author of a bestselling book among many other things he’s been part of over the course of his career. The word prolific does not even begin to describe this man.

Today on the podcast,

How he went from his humble beginnings doing open mics in coffee shops and bars to getting his first TV show

* He shares some super candid stuff about how despite appearing unflappable, on the inside - as he says - “it’s all flaps.”

* You’ve probably heard me talk about the idea of “create the work you want to be paid to create,” and Kamau has an amazing story about how he applied that exact idea

23 Sep 2016Sir Mix A Lot: Everybody Has A Calling01:38:55

Everybody has a calling. If you open your eyes, there’s a maker instinct in you. For Sir Mix-A-Lot, creativity manifested in the form of rabid love for music in general and for hip-hop in particular. Cobbling together an immortal career first out of cast-off electronics and then out of platinum records, Mix was never concerned with success when he started out. He simply kept doing what he felt called to do - make music that gets people dancing - until he found himself in the midst of a profitable business.

In our talk we discuss:

* the early days

* How to stay hungry over a long career

* Necessity breeds creativity

* He’s a self-described tinkerer. And I mean, reading schematics, writing the code, and get out the soldering iron tinkerer.

I guarantee, this is a side of Sir Mix A Lot you won't see in the music videos.

19 Jan 2022How to Say No to Protect Your Time with Jason Fried01:53:13

With so much information, and gadgets and access and hustle and email and …and.. aren’t you overloaded at work!? It’s understandable and it’s a real problem. If this describes you or someone you love…you’ll LOVE this episode of the show.

Enter: Jason Fried.  He’s the brilliant NYT best-selling author and co-founder of the software firm, Basecamp.  Since long before meeting Jason in person he’s always caught my eye as perhaps THE outspoken thinker / critic of the current status of work, our unhealthy habits around our jobs, and our addictions to busy-making. Whether it’s the toxic hustle, the grow-at-all-cost mentality, or the idea of working your fingers to the bone…Jason helps us all see why 99% of this approach is rubbish. And within 3 minutes of meeting him / listening to this episode, I’m banking you’ll be in agreement with him.

The one refreshing difference with Jason?  He also gives us a roadmap to fix what we’ve broken. In this episode we talk about his latest book (co-authored with previous CJLIVE podcast guest David Heinemeier Hansson) called It Doesn’t Have to be Crazy at Work, which lays out a play-by-play on how to avoid all exhaustion, stress, and burnout and how to find tools for reshaping success, habits, trust, self care, and gaining that much-needed fresh perspective.

In this episode, we cover

  • How hard work and hours are not the same thing. In fact, long hours leads to burn out.

  • Why instant communication (slack, messenger, text etc) is making us slaves to our devices, less effective, and spending more time on the conveyor belt of information consumption than doing any real work.

  • Some insights and strategies for regaining control over our screen time, our sleep patterns, and where we put our our attention.

  • A re-framing of our always-busy culture around the JOYS of missing out. Not FOMO…we’re talking JOMO.

  • Why regaining control of our time starts with learning how to say no.

  • …and that’s all in the first 10 minutes. Just kidding but you get the point. This episode of the podcast is chock full of inspired virtues for reclaiming our spirit, doing GREAT work and loving life in the process.

Enjoy!

03 Jan 2018Daymond John: Why Grit, Persistence, and Hard Work Matter01:11:05

Daymond John is the CEO and founder of the iconic lifestyle brand, FUBU, which he started by selling handmade hats on the street and went on to have more than $6 billion in sales. You’ve seen him as the “snake in the grass” star on ABC’s Shark Tank, which is currently in its tenth season of filming. He released his first NY Times best selling book, Power of Broke, in 2016, and is just about to drop his second, Rise and Grind.

This is Daymond’s second time bringing his buttery soft hands and understated wisdom on the show and somehow we had even more fun than last time. Between jokes and anecdotes, Daymond drops some serious wisdom on how to keep your goals, habits, and pursuit of your dream life simple and effective.

In today’s episode:

  • While writing Rise and Grind, Daymond found some killer recurring themes for living your most productive and best life. Most of them you’ve heard on the show before- meditation, importance of sleep, exercise- but he drops some new shared habits and techniques on prioritization and goal setting.
  • Entrepreneurship is simple. It’s just figuring out each roadblock, each problem, one at a time and not getting comfortable with it.
  • If you can’t answer why you want the success that you claim to, you probably won’t have the fortitude to keep going when the going gets tough. There’s power in defining exactly why you want the things you do, and revisiting your goals regularly to make sure you still want them.

10 Jan 2018Austin Kleon: Why Great Artists Steal01:24:13

Austin Kleon is a writer who draws. He’s the best selling author of three illustrated books; Newspaper Blackout, Steal Like An Artist, and Show Your Work. Using his own words and borrowed (stolen) words alike, Austin articulates better than anyone how to find your own style and vision and then what to do with your work. He’s been featured on NPR, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and this is quickly becoming a regular here on cjLIVE.

This interview is from a few years ago, but I’ve been itching to share it again because it still packs such a heavy punch. Austin, the quote factory, Kleon seems to have a quote that perfectly encapsulates every topic we touch on. We go from tip to toe on the creative process; how to draw inspiration for your work, how to hone your style while growing an audience, and how to ship your work.

In today’s episode:

  • Boring life = best art. Schedules, habits, daily routines make you more productive and more creative.
  • If you aren’t sharing your work, you’re missing out on half of the artistic experience. The person who experiences your art is just as important as you are in the process. Sharing your work is also a tool to attract more people who are interested in what you’re interested in.
  • Side projects and hobbies are critical components in defining what your next best work will be.

28 Jun 2017Transform Your Consciousness w/ Jason Silva01:14:05

If you’re familiar with Jason then you know he’s an incredibly unique human. And if you’re not, then I'll do my best-- but you really just need to check out his work. He’s a brilliant and insanely insightful creator whose work sits at the intersection of philosophy, personal development and film much like my own work. You may know him as the host of Nat Geo’s “Brain Games,” from his short film series “Shots Of Awe” or his latest show “Origins” which is in its debut season. It’s really tough to put a label on his work, so instead of trying I’m simply going to echo his words - he calls them “espresso shots of philosophy” and while that’s a bit of a mouthful it’s also a very accurate characterization.

Today on the podcast,

We talk about how Jason got his start on Al Gore’s cable channel Current TV

* He explains why the "one man band" approach is the best way for him to work and how technology has made that possible for an entire generation of creators

* In the tail end of this episode we get into a bunch of heady, somewhat esoteric stuff that you will absolutely love if you’re a fan of Jason’s YouTube stuff - everything from transhumanism to psychedelics to metaphysics

Enjoy!

18 May 2022Data-Driven Life Decisions with Seth Stephens-Davidowitz01:02:56

Is it always the best decision to trust your gut?

When it’s time to make a simple decision, (where to eat, what car to buy, where to go on vacation) we rely on resources and data at our disposal. We check reviews, compare ratings, and ultimately decide based on available data. So why does it often feel like we're winging it when it comes to bigger life decisions? Am I happy? Am I working on the right things? Is my career on the right path?

What would our lives look like if we took a data driven approach to some of life's bigger questions?

Seth Stephens-Davidowitz is an author, data scientist, and speaker who studies what we can learn about people from new, internet data sources.

In this episode, Seth discusses why you don’t need to wing it as much as you think you have to.

Seth’s call to action is to observe the data that is readily available to you. Use them as guide posts. If we consider the collective experience of others in our own decision making, we start to understand ourselves on a deeper level; and that is a powerful place to make decisions from.

Seth's Book, "Don't Trust Your Gut" is available now.

17 Mar 2021Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention with Erin Meyer00:58:10

Back in 2009, Netflix Talent Officer Patty McCord and CEO Reed Hastings published a presentation called the "Netflix Culture Deck". This 125 page deck, now has over 20 Million views and created quite a buzz in the HR and tech world for its radical ideas that countered typical corporate culture such as vacation policy that equated to "take some", a "do what you think is best for the company" expense policy, and mindset that "adequate performance will get a generous severance."

And that's where it started. Erin Meyer, my guest on today's show, read that deck and found herself startled, confused, and curious. There has never before been a company like Netflix. It has led nothing short of a revolution in the entertainment industries having to reinvent itself over and over again. How have these counterintuitive and radical management principles made such unprecedented flexibility possible?

Erin is an author and a professor at INSEAD, one of the world's leading international business schools. I ran into her work several years ago when I read her book, The Culture Map: Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business. Her work has appeared in the Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, and Forbes. She's been noted as one of the 50 most influential business thinkers in the world by Thinkers50.

Today we're talking about her latest book, NO RULES RULES: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with past and current Netflix employees, among others, our conversation explores high performance teams and how we can apply their culture into our own lives.

Some topics we dig into:

  • Hard work is irrelevant. Excellence isn't just about hard work, if someone is a pain to work with (or be around) it can impact everyone.
  • The benefits of candor and a culture of feedback.
  • Giving others freedom to make the biggest decisions gives them fuel to succeed.
  • And so much more.

Enjoy!

04 Jul 2018Why You MUST Show Your Work with Austin Kleon00:10:44

Summer is in full swing (or winter snow season for my southern friends) and you’re busy, I get it. That’s why this week I’m hooking you up with a powerhouse of short and sweet creative guidance from my man, Austin Kleon up on the podcast today. If you're not familiar with Austin's work, definitely check out some of his best-selling books like Steal Like An Artist and Show Your Work! Austin is a full spectrum mentor when it comes to harnessing creativity and this week we are chatting about the next important step in your creative process: sharing that work.

In this episode:

* Sharing your work keeps you honest to yourself and to your audience. There is outer accountability baked in to the process of sharing your work which forces you to continue creating more work.
* Sharing your work and sharing your process is the most authentic promotion of what you’re making. You are putting in the time to create the art.. Finish the job by hitting “publish”.
* Community is a natural byproduct of sharing your work. If you give openly, you’ll receive feedback and inspiration in return and very likely much more.

06 Jun 2018Hack Your Learning with Tim Ferriss00:12:28

We’re now heading into almost 100 episodes of the podcast, that’s a crazy amount to learn from. So I figured there wasn't a better time to share a short convo I had with my good bud Tim Ferriss on his method for rapidly learning any skill.

Tim’s got mad skills in breaking down big subjects and making them digestible which he does for us here, in all of his best selling books- 4 Hour Workweek, 4 Hour Body, 4 Hour Chef, Tools of Titans, and Tribe of Mentors- as well as on his podcast The Tim Ferriss Show.

Hosting this podcast is one of my greatest joys. Of course I love to interact with the amazing guests we have on the show, but what gives me real joy is hearing how it has impacted you, the listener. So give this episode a listen and let me know how you’re putting it into practice.

In this episode:

* Tim has mastered the art of learning with four steps, acronymized as DSSS. Deconstructing the goal, Selecting where to focus your efforts to get the best results, Sequencing what order to approach tasks, and setting Stakes.

* When choosing people to learn from, choose those who have natural attributes working against them but still succeed. This indicates their training methods are good enough to make up for their natural shortcomings.

* Even the most trivial amounts of money are often times enough to keep you accountable to your goal. Want to get in shape? Put $1 on the line.

Enjoy!

07 Mar 2022Joy is the Way00:15:35

Do you have a big dream, but you're having trouble making progress?

There is one simple thing you can do to start moving, and re-train your brain to operate autonomously,  prioritize joy. Once you make this contract with yourself to pursue joy on a regular basis, you start to create inertia.

So how do you get started? Maybe you don't know what action to take? I believe that a hugely under valued element of the equation is joy. You don't need to wait for lighting to strike. You don't need a master grand plan. Just start doing more of the stuff that make you feel more alive, and less of the things that block you or don’t serve you.

In this episode I share a few thoughts on how prioritizing joy on a daily basis can have tremendous positive impacts in other area of life.

So are YOU following joy? Share this message with a friend who needs to hear it.

Enjoy!

27 Dec 20177 Habits to Unlocking Your Big Dreams00:23:41

December is generally a slow time- a lot of businesses shut down or slow down, people tend to spend time with family and loved ones, and it’s traditionally a time that offers us time and space. I love using this time of year and the traits that it bears to its full advantage to slow down, strategize, and synthesize my intentions. Whether it’s end of the year, beginning of a year, or the cusp of any time in your life, we unwrap the mindset of dreaming big, setting goals, and taking action.

In today’s episode,

  • Declaring your intention for yourself and where you want to go should be one of your first steps in setting your goals. Verbalizing your intentions is a signal to the universe that you’re ready to take the necessary action.
  • How to use a playbook to creatively attack your goals and turn your intentions into actions. I have 7 habits that I use to feed my creativity. Use my playbook or start your own.
  • Making your goals specific and quantifiable and then tracking them is incredibly important if you want to succeed in achieving them. There’s power in specificity; “I want to get my business off the ground” vs “I want to have 4 new clients by March 1st, 2018”.
22 Sep 2021Discover Work that Makes You Come Alive with Jonathan Fields01:18:20

The ongoing pandemic is creating a time of rapid transition. It's as if we're waking up from a deep slumber, and as we do so, we're re-examining every aspect of life-- especially our livelihoods and the work we do in the world.

If you're someone who's dug up the internet to find ways to rediscover your impulse, you would've infallibly come across Jonathan Fields and his work with unique imprints or Sparketypes®️. Jonathan is an award-winning author, producer, business innovator, and host of one of the world's top podcasts, Good Life Project. He's the chief architect and driving force behind Sparketypes, also the world's first purpose, engagement, and flow archetypes.

In addition to writing award-winning and bestselling books like his upcoming, Sparked: Discover Your Unique Imprint for Work that Makes You Come Alive, How to Live a Good Life, and Uncertainty: Turning Fear and Doubt Into Fuel For Brilliance, Jonathan has founded several companies with a focus on maximizing human potential.

In today's episode, Jonathan joins me to unfold the 10 different Sparketypes we all come under, the significance of our Primary, Shadow and Anti-Sparketypes, and how these help you get attuned to doing what makes you feel alive. Jonathan also talks about his transformative journey leaving his six-figure job as a lawyer to pursue his dream, and about his achievements and insights out of the Good Life Project.

Highlights from our conversation:

  • How to identify the deeper impulse inside of you that wakes you up in the morning and gives you the feeling of coming alive
  • About the field-tested and inimitably accurate Sparketype 2.0 assessment and how to make the best out of it
  • How to reimagine, rework, and reinvent the things you’re already doing so you don’t have to go through a massive disruption to get to where you want to be
  • The action steps to pursuing a life of your calling - discover your imprint, try not to make disruptive changes while you begin (unless, of course, you’re in a toxic environment), see where your impulse lines up and where it does not, and find out how you can apply it to existing or any new work that you can take up.

20 Feb 2019Do Something Different with Jason Mesnick01:08:52

After a difficult divorce, Jason Mesnick wanted to rediscover himself, rekindle his sense of adventure, and try something new. That was his mantra. And it sparked an unexpected journey that pushed him into the leading role in the 13th season of The Bachelor.

Though he presents himself as a “normal guy” he clearly has lived an extraordinary reality tv experience that so few of us have (and of course we talk about this in depth, how unusual it really was) — but also how in many ways it’s a journey that parallels ours...building a living and a life around the things we love. Jason is a sage when it comes to coaching us to our follow inner instincts, focus on what matters, and take chances to expand our lives in unexpected ways. I’m pretty sure this interview is a side of a reality TV star that few people have ever experienced.

In this episode we also:

  • Dig into the very unique world that is The Bachelor TV show. As someone who admittedly doesn’t watch the show (but I’m married to someone who does!) it was a fascinating and at some times head scratching experience receiving very honest account from someone at the epicenter of prime time reality TV.
  • Explore Jason’s mindset for vulnerability and overcoming fear and rejection.
  • Of course we get some inner scoop on his fantastic relationship with his wife, Molly Mesnick and their entire family
  • Hear from Jason what his key takeaways were from the experience, and how he’s parlayed his experience into big success as an entrepreneur in real estate.

12 Nov 2024Why Embracing Discomfort Can Transform Your Art | Austin Kleon00:17:45

In this episode, Austin Kleon dives into the concept of "creative discomfort" and how pushing outside our comfort zones drives authentic, impactful art. Austin, a bestselling author known for Steal Like an Artist, Show Your Work, and Keep Going, shares his unique take on creativity as a process of problem-solving, subtraction, and friction. Together, we explore how the right amount of tension—whether in tools, routines, or mindsets—can spark the kind of genuine work that truly resonates.

We discuss the unexpected benefits of friction, whether it’s the rough feel of a pencil on paper, a challenging creative prompt, or even an intentional lack of convenience in day-to-day routines. Austin shares his journey back to writing books after a long hiatus and the unique way he keeps his process challenging by setting up creative “problems” for himself. From learning to ride a bike in his forties to adopting analog tools to enhance creative tension, Austin’s approach is a refreshing reminder that the best work often comes not from ease but from intentional, creative struggle.

Some highlights we explore:

  • Comfort Work vs. Risk Work: Austin defines “comfort work” as creative tasks that feel safe and familiar, contrasted with “risk work” that pushes growth—like his switch to paid newsletters and return to book writing.
  • The Power of Subtraction: By removing familiar tools or elements, Austin intentionally creates discomfort, a process he calls “discomfort by subtraction,” to spark fresh ideas and perspective.
  • Friction as Fuel: Austin discusses how the right “friction” in tools, like rough pencil textures, gives essential feedback, enhancing his work's depth and authenticity.
  • Constraint and Freedom: Using the metaphor of guitar strings, he explains how balancing freedom and constraint creates the ideal “tension” to unlock true creative potential.

23 Feb 2022Trauma is Wreaking Havoc in Our Lives with Gabby Bernstein00:54:13

Deep in the grips of drug addiction, Gabby Bernstein was sitting in her beaten-up white Toyota Corolla playing a cassette again and again and listening to a psychic saying to her, “You have two choices in this lifetime: You could stay addicted—and that’s not going to be good—or you can get clean and make a major impact on the world.” In that moment, she couldn’t contemplate what it would be like to get out of bed later that day, let alone make a major impact on the world. 21 Dec 2020Courage, Creativity and The Power of Change with Beth Comstock01:02:34

As we come into the New Year, it's often a time of reflection and looking forward. Thinking about the things we want to change and recommit to goals.

Whether you have big audacious goals or just want to do something seemingly small, these things take a huge amount of courage and creativity.

Which leads us to today's episode with Beth Comstock. Beth Comstock's mission is to understand what's next, navigate change and help others do the same. By cultivating a habit of seeking out new ideas, people and places, she built a career path from storyteller to chief marketer to corporate Vice Chair.

Beth spent nearly three decades at GE until December 2017. As Vice Chair of Business Innovation and previously Chief Marketing Officer, she led efforts to accelerate new growth, develop digital and clean-energy futures, seed new businesses and enhance brand value. As President of Integrated Media at NBC Universal, Beth oversaw TV ad revenue and new digital efforts, including the early development of hulu.com.

Beth came to studio not too long ago to teach a class at CreativeLive on this exact topic, and I wanted to share a few of my favorite lessons that helps us:

  1. Become a changemaker by leading with imagination.

  2. Gain the courage to develop and defend new creative ideas.

  3. Unearth new ideas but apply strategy to bring them to fruition.

  4. Make room for discovery and how to apply storytelling concepts to make your vision into reality.

Remember, the world will never be slower than it is right now. So it's never a better time to ignite your ideas into reality.

11 Apr 2018The Future Is Yours. What's Holding You Back?01:05:18

Today you’re joining me in Jamaica where I gave a keynote to rising stars; part of Richard Branson’s Center for Entrepreneurship. What I love about this talk, and really engaging with the community at large is -- whether you are an entrepreneur, artist, or really pursuing anything, we all face the same challenges - fear, doubt, and finding our way.

I share some of those things from my journey, but even more interesting and fun is getting to hear from 3 different entrepreneurs on stage with the goal of unlocking some of their biggest challenges. And I know without a doubt, the challenges they have are similar to ones you face or will face. Please enjoy our business therapy session.

You’ll also be inspired to know that:

* Failure is one of the best learning opportunities. Rather than letting failure scare you away from trying again, let it teach you what to do next time.

* You’ve got to periodically look at your business model to see where your money is coming from vs where you’re spending your time. If you’re not making the most money from where you’re spending the most time, you need to fix it fast.

* Stories are an integral part of succeeding at business. Telling your own story well can move your business across the globe. On the other end of the spectrum, you’ve got to get really honest regarding the stories you’re telling yourself about what’s holding you back.

28 Nov 2018Love, Service, and Living Your Truth with Danielle LaPorte01:16:34

Let’s face it. We all have our inner journeys and the compulsion to improve, yet how can we both be growing and improving without feeling less than or inadequate?  It’s a trap. ENTER: Danielle LaPorte - a best-selling author (White Hot TruthThe Fire Starter Sessions, and The Desire Map), poet, former think tank executive and business strategist - and she’s on the podcast today to help us, among other things, to reconcile these competing principles.

As one of Oprah Winfrey’s “Super Soul 100 Leaders”, Danielle is a sage at helping us answer life’s biggest questions for ourselves. And, while taking care of one’s self + staying true to who we are seem both obvious and something that should be easy…but why - if you’re at all like me- is doing both waaay harder than it should be.  Again, Danielle to the rescue in this amazing episode of the show, served up nicely for you ;)

Also in today's episode, Danielle and I discuss:

  • SELF LOVE.  How to love yourself now, even though you are not where you want to be.
  • Modern day life. How is it that social media can be both medicine and poison? It’s essential for business and getting your work out there, but being addicted to growth is killing us. How can we reconcile this?
  • The secret. How about “conscious growth”, including saying no to some things because that’s the most nourishing thing you need.  And how to know what these things are - and what they are not.
  • Why we MUST be our own guru…. We all have the capacity to know the answers we seek in our own heart, yet we struggle to listen. WHY?
  • ….and a bunch more ;)

04 Apr 2018Grit, Guts, Gumption and the Art of More01:03:14

Today I’m reaching into my quiver of keynotes  to share a talk I gave at CreativeMornings here in Seattle. If you’re not aware of CreativeMornings it’s a breakfast lecture series for the creative community started by my good friend Tina Roth Eisenberg. These talks are hosted in hundreds of cities around the globe and a great way to connect with your local community. There are thousands of talks on their website, creativemornings.com.

The theme of this talk was bravery, so I talk about my own experience and my take on how Ansel Adams and Macklemore have used bravery and vulnerability to propel their careers by making things that only they could make. I showed some videos during the talk, and if you want to see them you can find the whole talk on my YouTube channel or on the CreativeMornings site.

In this episode,

* We really explore this idea of “the art of more”. The act of creating, and putting more work out there, despite our fear and it’s imperfections.
* At the core of this talk is bravery. I dig into why personal work, for me, has been a great vehicle to getting out there and when I look back on my career, it’s been the greatest lever that has lead to my biggest accomplishments.
* Finally, we end with audience questions which is always my favorite part of any talk. We get into how to break into a creative community, how to deal with “no”, and some of my biggest failures.

06 Dec 2023New Ways to Get Big Things Done with Andrew McAfee01:08:47

In this episode, Andrew McAfee shares his insights on "The Geek Way", a new book that explores a different approach to work and collaboration. Andrew McAfee is a Principal Research Scientist at the MIT Sloan School of Management and co-founder of MIT's Initiative on the Digital Economy. He has written several books, including "More from Less" and "The Second Machine Age".

During the conversation, McAfee discusses the importance of embracing a geek culture that revolves around science, ownership, speed, and openness. He explains how this culture can lead to freewheeling, evidence-driven, and autonomous organizations. McAfee highlights the discomfort and challenges that come with implementing the geek way, but emphasizes that it is far more rewarding than working in stifling bureaucracies.

Some highlights we explore:

  • The benefits of iterating and taking action before feeling fully prepared
  • The power of pointed conversations and learning from constructive criticism
  • The contrast between bureaucratic environments and geek culture
16 Nov 2020The Art of Less Doing with Ari Meisel01:13:51

We all know that this world is fast paced. If you're like me, there's never enough time to do all the things you want. Naturally, the feeling of overwhelm creeps in, hindering our ability to operate as creatives and entrepreneurs.

But, when it comes to pursuing the things that we love in life, we have to create time for those things. My guest today, Ari Meisel, is a creator, speaker, coach, and the author of Less Doing More Living, a resource designed to help those of us who feel overwhelmed, become more effective.

Ari's teachings break down into three sections on today's show:

  1. Self-tracking and the manual of you- basically how to run an audit.
  2. Structuring your creative self. I used to think that structure was a waste of time. And suddenly after 10 years, I realized that a little bit of structure around my creativity was the thing that unlocked it.
  3. How to take back time and begin moving towards our biggest goals.

Half an hour with Ari today and a whole bunch of tactical information to help you hone your craft, your practice and your life. You might want to have a notepad for this one.

19 Jan 2017Brian Solis: It’s not good enough to be good enough00:48:52

Brian Solis is a digital anthropologist and futurist, studying disruptive technology and its impact on the future of business and society.

This episode is all about design-- specifically experience design, which is the topic of Brian’s latest book “X: The Experience When Business Meets Design.” It's the paradigm which drives companies like Nike, Airbnb, and Uber that are transforming one industry after the other, and Brian has some great insights that will help you wrap your head around it and apply it to your own work.

Today on the podcast,

* How to take inspiration from brands, people and products that are outside your industry-- for example, as Brian says Starbucks isn’t looking to other coffee companies for inspiration

* We address the common misconception that innovation is synonymous with technology, and why innovation is really about understanding people- their behavior, their preferences - and finding a way to give it to them

* Brian says that simply asking "why" is one of the best ways for us to uncover friction points and get rid of them. It's such a simple question, but so powerful.

09 Aug 2017The Things All Creators Must Know + Believe00:13:03

One of my most popular, widely shared, and (so I'm told) most impactful blog posts is one I did a few years back called "The 10 Things All Creatives (That's You) Must Know," a collection of hard-won lessons I've learned from my 20+ years in the trenches as a creator. And although it's a few years old I feel more confident than ever about the timeless value of these lessons -- and so this week on the podcast I'm bringing you an audio version of that blog post. Here's a sneak preview of what you can look forward to:

* Experts aren’t the answer.
* Clients cannot tell you what they need.
* Don’t aim for ‘better’, aim for ‘different’.
* Big challenges create the best work.
* Aesthetic sensibilities actually matter.
* Simple is good.
* Make mistakes, learn quickly.
* “Value” is different from “price.”
* A-Gamers work with A-Gamers.
* Real artists create.

26 Jan 2017Gretchen Rubin: Think about milestones, not finish lines01:07:10

Gretchen Rubin is the author of several blockbuster NYT bestsellers (Better Than Before, The Happiness Project and Happier At Home) which have sold millions of copies worldwide. If you notice a common theme of “happiness,” that’s because Gretchen is one of the world’s foremost “happiness experts.”

Today on the podcast,

* Gretchen talks about her concept of “drift." Drift is what happens when we take the path of least resistance, which avoids friction in the short term but often leads to unhappiness in the long term

* She also gets into several of her “personality frameworks” like obliger, upholder, rebel, questioner.

* We talk about accountability: “A lot of people who are frustrated with themselves just need accountability.” Boom.

21 Apr 2021Julia Cameron: The Creative Art of Attention01:09:47

If you've been honing your creativity for awhile, you might have come across The Artist's Way, by legendary author Julia Cameron. Her work resonated with me in more ways than one, including helping myself and millions of others work to cultivate creativity and grow my craft.

Julia joins me on today's show to talk about her life journey, upcoming book, The Listening Path, and the heart-warming backstory behind her bestselling creation, The Artist's Way.

The Queen of Change is credited with starting a movement in 1992 that brought creativity into the mainstream conversation— in the arts, in business, and in everyday life. With over 40 books (both fiction and nonfiction) published, and a successful career as a poet, songwriter, filmmaker, and playwright, Julia's story is a must-listen for any creative mind.

In this episode, we unpack:

  • Julia's experience fighting for her right to write and writing controversial articles for the school paper.
  • Unblocking oneself as an artist and a teacher and how finding a career path in the process.
  • How The Artist's Way began as a tool to help about 10 friends unblock themselves creatively, then went on to sell more than 4 million copies
  • Not trying to be brilliant but rather focus on being useful. Julia shares how her career straightened out following the learning.
  • Listening beyond the veil - how to listen to the noises that we habitually tune out from, talking to others, listening more deeply, and not interrupting.
  • The idea of Blasting through Blocks -- it's a tool to undertake when you're procrastinating or when your fear has got you landlocked, or when your critic is loud.
  • The Believing Mirror is "somebody who reflects back to your strength, your courage, your positivity, your possibility, and they don't have a need to fix you. They just have a need to listen."
  • Jerusalem is Walking in this World - a poem by Julia Cameron.

21 Nov 2022Show, Don't Tell: How to Get Support for Your Creative Work00:14:50

Let’s face it, when you put new creative ideas into the world few people understand it. Others may reject it. Overall it’s likely you’ll be met with resistance. That’s ok.

In this episode, we talk about how to navigate these waters. Whether these folks are your loved ones or cynics trying to tamp down your dreams. If we need rocket fuel for our dreams to achieve escape velocity, the cynics in our lives turn on the fire suppression systems and keep us trapped by Earth’s gravity. In a previous episode I spoke about auditing your inner circle, but that's not always possible. In that case, how do we get them on board? Let's get into it.

13 Oct 2021Stevie Van Zandt: Self-Discovery, Activism, and Rock & Roll01:00:53

Musician, actor, journalist, political activist, philanthropist and, now, book author. Stevie Van Zandt is a lot more than Bruce Springsteen’s legendary E-Street Band guitarist, and much more than The Sopranos’ Silvio Dante.

In today’s episode, Stevie takes us through how a self-assured, Catholic New Jersey kid ended up first performing on the world’s biggest rock’n’roll stages, then fighting against apartheid in South Africa, and eventually starring in one of the most successful TV series of all time.

Some highlights from our conversation:

  • If you want to change your career, make sure you have something good to fall back on.
  • Having success later in life often means that you get to enjoy it more – and are better at what you do.
  • In life, you don’t need to pick whether to lead or to be a leader: you can be both a good soldier and a good boss.
  • Creating content and marketing that content are two faces of the same coin – being good at both leads you to success.

Stevie’s first book, the memoir Unrequited Infatuations, is out now in hardcover, e-book, and audio.

08 May 2019Embracing Yourself as a Creator with Lisa Congdon01:11:20

Every artist faces rejection and setbacks on the road to finding an appreciative and paying audience. Today, I wanted to share a couple lessons from a class I took from Lisa Congdon on becoming an artist... and while she specifically mentions art, her insights and tactics really apply to any creative endeavor.

If you’re not familiar with Lisa’s work, she is a fine artist, illustrator and author. She is best known for her colorful paintings and hand lettering. She works for clients around the world including MoMA, REI, Harvard University, Martha Stewart Living, Chronicle Books, and Random House Publishing, among many others.

You'll also be happy to know:
  • The first step to embracing yourself as an artist or creator is believing you have something to offer the world.
  • We all have fear. It’s what you do with that fear that matters. Lisa talks about how to use fear to empower us to share and create
  • And because our world is full of creative constraint, she sets us on a solid foundation by helping us identify our core values. For example, I love how she simplifies it to this statement: “making and selling my work will feel good as long as I ________” (work with environmentally conscious clients)
