"Am I not beautiful?"
Starting with the Nintendo 64 and working our way through Dreamcast and PS2 we trace the murky history of 3D Castlevania titles before arriving at MercurySteam's 2010 opus Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Leon, Josh, Sean and guest Andi Hamilton of Midnight Resistance as well as our faithful forum correspondents discuss the pitfalls and perils of translating a beloved 2D franchise into polygons before appraising Lords of Shadow in some depth and detail.

24 Feb 2014 | The Binding of Isaac – Cane and Rinse No.116 | 01:32:36
"Isaac and his Mother lived alone in a small house, on a hill..."
In our second podcast covering an Edmund McMillen designed videogame, James Carter, Darren Gargette and special guest Lewie Procter discuss The Binding of Isaac and the depths that it literally and metaphorically goes to. In this issue we tackle the original story that the game is named after, talk about endlessly wailing children (again?), the future of the game with Rebirth and of course, our wonderful forum feedback and Twitter Three Word Reviews. Plus it'd be rude to not squeeze in our obligatory Super Meat Boy reference in this show, wouldn't it?

Darren Gargette walks us through the corners of Ed McMillen's mind in his Binding of Isaac (think Zelda meets Smash TV meets a Rorschach inkblot test) Quick Rinse:
Darren Gargette put his considerable The Binding of Isaac progress on hiatus when this revamp of the game was announced.
Now, two years of waiting has lead to this moment of him playing The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth with teary eyes and a keen sense of anticipation:

02 Mar 2014 | Super Mario 64 – Cane and Rinse No.117 | 01:56:09
"Ah spaghetti... Ah ravioli... Ah mamma mia..."
In the third of our 'core' Super Mario series podcasts we arrive at the dawn of the 64-bit era and perhaps one of the most esteemed launch titles of all, Super Mario 64. Leon, Tony, Darren Gargette and Karl remember the booting up and seeing Mario's massive, malleable mug filling their cathode rays tubes for the first time, as do many of our valued forum contributors and Twitter correspondents.

16 Oct 2011 | James Mielke interview – Cane and Rinse No.3 | 01:33:46
Our first interview subject on Cane and Rinse is the multi-talented industry veteran James Mielke. He describes his remarkable career path from comic illustrator to producer at Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Q-Entertainment, via (amongst other things) clothes designer and bar manager, not to mention Editor-In-Chief of Electronic Gaming Monthly & 1UP.com. We also explore Q's output past and future, we talk turkey about the commercial performance of Child of Eden, we even get an exclusive regarding the forthcoming Vita release of Lumines: Electronic Symphony, and much more besides.

"Do exactly as I say, and I promise this will be over before the night is out."
Manhunt and Manhunt 2 have garnered a fair amount of discussion in the past 10 years, not much of it about the games themselves. In issue 119, James, Tony and special guests Andi Hamilton and Paul Shotton look at Rockstar's stealth series and the legacy it created.

23 Mar 2014 | PaRappa the Rapper / UmJammer Lammy – Cane and Rinse No.120 | 01:57:59
"Slurp it, suck it, I know we all like it."
PaRappa the Rapper, Masaya Matsuura's little lovelorn dog that could (rap) pretty much kick-started the rhythm-action genre single-pawed. NanaOn-Sha followed up with the twisted tale of a rocking ungulate destined to take a trip to Hell and back - UmJammer Lammy - before PaRappa the Rapper returned for one (apparently) final showdown on PS2. Leon, Darren Gargette and new Cane and Rinser Ryan Hamann contemplate the surrealist charm of the loose PaRappa 'trilogy' in this three game edition of the podcast.

Leon, Tony, James and Josh awake after 999999 days of suspended animation to cast their eyes (and an amalgam of mysterious gels) over the rusting carcass of Aperture Science's giant, upside-down facility. Valve's Portal 2 was met with widespread acclaim upon its release in 2011, can we agree on whether or not time has been kind to Chell, Wheatley, GLaDOS and Cave Johnson... for science..?

For this weeks show James, Sean, Jay and Darren Forman don their best vault hunter gear in order to discuss Gearbox Software's 2012 sequel to their previous hit title - Borderlands 2. Among the varied topics they explore are the differences between this game and its predecessor, the game's multitude of downloadable content and the handheld PlayStation Vita version.

"You’re so fine, I want you mine, you’re so delicious, I think about you all the time, you’re so addictive..."
Bringing our journey through the Burnout series to a close we come to Criterion's final 'proper' game bearing the name, Burnout Paradise. Cruising around Paradise City are Leon, Darren, James and Karl, plus we also hear from a fleet of Cane and Rinse correspondents and, intriguingly, we get some exclusive and official insight into the making of Paradise from lead gameplay programmer Iain Angus.

20 Jul 2014 | Banjo-Kazooie – Cane and Rinse No.137 | 01:59:42
"It really does sound quite absurd, adventure of a bear and bird!"
Rare's ursine-avian twosome are the subject of this issue of the podcast. Not only do Leon, Ryan, Brian and former Rare employee Darren discuss the original, much-loved Banjo-Kazooie, but also its 2000 sequel Banjo-Tooie as well as a brief word about a brace of GBA spin-offs. As usual we also get to share the experiences and opinions of the Cane and Rinse community too.

A gleeful Gargette re-enters the sumptuous and magical fairy tale world created by his beloved Rare. Banjo-Kazooie debuted on N64 in the summer of 1998, before the bear 'n' bird duo made their way to Xbox Live Arcade in 2008.
Darren's playing the game via PC emulation here but it goes without saying that he owns the original cartridge, because as he says himself, his reason for being born was to play it:
Next Darren has a (partially successful) stab at racing through Treasure Trove Cove on 4J Studios' Xbox 360 version of Rare's Nintendo 64 classic Banjo-Kazooie:
Darren was so excited ahead of the release of Rare Replay that he went back to sprawling Banjo-Kazooie sequel Banjo-Tooie.
Next Darren investigates the Game Boy Advance outing that was set between Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie but came out three years after the second N64 game in 2003, Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge.
As you can plainly see, the GBA game is being emulated on PC here:
Finally Darren takes on the game that should have been a pseudo-successor to Diddy Kong Racing, but instead ended up as the final game featuring Banjo on a Nintendo platform, Banjo-Pilot. Again GBA emulated on PC:

"Your flesh is an insult to the perfection of the digital."
Leon, James and Karl were unfazed by the task of having to complete Looking Glass Studios/Irrational Games' notoriously tough and terrifying 1999 action RPG System Shock 2 for this podcast. Our panel marvel at how hardcore made-specifically-for-PC games could be back at the time System Shock 2 was created, and also how cleverly Irrational streamlined the experience for 2007's BioShock. As usual we also hear from those brave enough among our community to have boarded the Von Braun themselves, as well as some music from the game's OST.

07 Sep 2014 | The Last of Us – Cane and Rinse No.144 | 03:20:15
“It doesn't matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.”
Oft-requested, once delayed, here at last is our podcast devoted to Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed The Last of Us*. Leon, Jay, Josh and Sean talk about the story, the cut-scenes, the performances and - yes - the gameplay, in both vanilla PS3 and PS4 Remastered releases. We also touch upon the multiplayer and share a glut of fantastic community posts reflecting some extreme opinions on the game, both positive and negative.

Leon, Darren, Josh and Ryan explore the vast, chaotic world of Super Smash Bros. from its pre-millennial inception on N64 up to and including Brawl on Wii. There's plenty of talk about the hardcore tournament scene surrounding the GameCube's Melee too of course, plus as usual we hear from members of the Cane and Rinse community. GAME SET!

Darren revisits the first Super Smash Bros. for N64 (emulated here on PC, as you can plainly see).
Darren Gargette shows us a few of Super Smash Bros. Melee's deceptively deep ropes. If indeed ropes can be deep. Here Darren is playing the game on PC via emulation rather than his original GameCube disc.
In anticipation of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Nintendo Wii U Darren busted out Brawl from 2008.

07 Dec 2014 | Silent Hill 2 – Cane and Rinse No.155 | 01:59:51
"I guess I really don't care if it's dangerous or not. I'm going to town either way."
Can we already reached the peak of the Silent Hill series after only two of our eight planned podcasts on the series? According to many we may well have done but do our panel of Leon, Josh and Sean agree? And how about our esteemed forum and Twitter contributors? This and other, much darker matters are discussed in our Silent Hill 2 issue.

A slightly under-the-weather Leon (cold), Karl (stomach ache) and Dan Clark (headache) huddle together to celebrate Sonic Team's much misunderstood Saturn exclusive (at the time though no longer), NiGHTS into dreams... "I should never have angered that shopkeeper..."
Join us as we explore the spider-infested, alien-contested and shopkeeper-invested world of Derek Yu's 2008 and 2012 roguelike - Spelunky, platforming homage to the likes of Spelunker and Rick Dangerous: Spelunky. Josh, James, Darren and Sean focus their attention on the 2012 remake, as it's the game that we are, and most of you listening will probably be, most familiar with. However - do not fear - the original freeware title also gets its time in the sun.

07 Nov 2011 | The Assassin’s Creed franchise – Cane and Rinse No.6 | 01:36:30

"This is a nightmare... It can't be happening..."
The last game in the series by Team Silent, Silent Hill 4: The Room is a game that so brazenly experiments with the established formula, the internet conjured forth a myth to explain its existence. One that Josh , Sean and Karl are quick to debunk. There are many dark corners to explore and mysteries to uncover within the confines of Room 302, and we discuss whether all these secrets, are worth experiencing.

"Hey, chill. You don't see me bringing up your issues."
It's back to basics for the fifth of our Silent Hill series of podcasts. Climax Group were tasked with creating the 1976 set prequel to the original game with Silent Hill: Origins, but after an abortive attempt by their LA studio, a less ambitious title was mainly produced in Hampshire, England. Leon, Karl, Sean and new guest panellist Nick Parton weigh up the pros and cons of the finished piece, as well as trying to establish if the resulting story is canon, or indeed whether that even matters...

"Why don't you have a pork bun in your hand?"
United Front Games fused classic Hong Kong crime cinema with contemporary open-world videogame shenanigans for 2012's Sleeping Dogs. Guests CJ Black (Twin Humanities) and Sean Bell (Midnight Resistance) join Leon and Jay in our entirely unbalanced Dragon's Dogma issue. That's right, you'll not find much negativity about Capcom's 2012 action RPG here (although, as always we dissect the game and talk about those aspects we feel weren't as strong as others). This show is something a love-in (right through to our listener correspondence) and with something like 750 hours of play between us we make no apology for that. "Ice cream! Ice cream!"
A dystopic vision (late 80s/early 90s style) of bone-crunching, metallic future sports, courtesy of the famous Bitmap Bros, first Speedball and then Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe captured the imagination of many gamers over a quarter of a century ago. Leon, Darren and Tony celebrate the frenetic violence of the first two games in the series and their myriad ports, as well as scrutinise recent re-releases of Speedball 2 and even shoulder-barge the shortlist of disappointing follow-ups into the advertising hoardings.

10 May 2015 | Silent Hill: Shattered Memories – Cane and Rinse No.175 | 01:48:32
"Our caller ID shows that you are calling from Silent Hill, I regret to inform you that you are beyond even our help."
The penultimate of Cane and Rinse's eight Silent Hill podcasts sees Leon, Josh and Nick Parton from Just Add Idiots try to piece together their splintered recollections of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. As with several of the other games in this series, Climax Studios' 2009 reimagining of the original Silent Hill also inspired some excellent correspondence from our ever reliable community.

17 May 2015 | Wolfenstein: The New Order – Cane and Rinse No.176 | 01:59:54
"Yes, the Nazis rule the world now, they are everywhere. Everywhere."
Our four podcast series tracing the history of this particular franchise concludes with MachineGames' 2014 debut, Wolfenstein: The New Order. Leon, Tony and Karl explain how the latest (until contemporary prequel The Old Blood anyway) Nazi-blaster starring William Joseph "B.J." Blazkowicz manages to feel both 'back-to-basics' and surprisingly fresh at the same time. We also hear from a number of community correspondents, and there's even one negative Three Word Review to be found, among all the praise.

"You can wax on, wax off all you like. I'm still kicking your ass."
A late-generation cult classic or a ridiculous, slapstick B-movie take on the 3D brawler? Clover Studio wanted their cake and eat it with their 2006 swansong, God Hand, and Capcom let them have it. In Issue 177, James, Josh and Sean Bell discuss using a demonic arm to One-Inch Punch a luchador gorilla!

"This one red hour will make your reputation or mine... are you right with your maker?"
Silicon Knights' 2008 Xbox 360 exclusive, Too Human, was supposed to be the first in a trilogy of games. It was supposed to be the best game Denis Dyack's studio had ever produced. James, Brian and Sean Bell dissect what went right, what went wrong, and the reputation and legacy of this 'CyberNorse' action RPG.

Silent Hill: Downpour may or may not turn out to be the last ever 'proper' new Silent Hill release (Book of Memories excluded - for some discussion on both this and P.T./Silent Hills please look out on our YouTube channel), but it's likely to be our final podcast on this particular franchise... well, for several years at least.

The result was the unique and intriguing melange of mechanics and ideas, Killer7. Leon, Josh and Sean attempt to relate the whats and wherefores of this remarkable piece of software, augmented by the opinions and recollections of the Cane and Rinse community.

"I... I am a monument to all your sins..."
With Halo 5: Guardians scheduled to arrive later this year, Cane and Rinse company drop from orbit down to the surface of the second Halo. It's easy to forget just what a big deal this release was for Bungie and Microsoft back in 2004. How do Bungie's design decisions and curtailed development fare over a decade on, and does Halo 2: Anniversary for Xbox One (part of The Master Chief Collection) make a return any more tempting? A pair of PlayStation 2 games that, as we discover, were vital precursors to many rhythm action hits of the mid-to-late 2000s, including Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, Rock Band and - seemingly - several others, despite selling relatively few copies. In this podcast Leon, Josh and Karl give these early Harmonix games their due, and we also hear from some FreQuency and Amplitude playing correspondents.

It's a sadistic and mind-bending romp through sci-fi horror as Ryan Hamann, James Carter, and Karl Moon discuss their journeys through the perilous and mysterious 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. "Wake me... when you need me."
Halo 3 saw the Master Chief's debut on the Xbox 360, surfing in on a tidal wave of hype. Though Bungie didn't even quite manage to bestow the 'next gen' game with 'HD ready' graphics, Halo 3 arrived to stellar reviews and spectacular sales, not to mention more than a little piracy. Leon, Darren, Josh, Karl, Tony and a covenant of contributors remember 2007's frenzy of cat helmets and Forge modes, as well as ruminating upon their recent return to the game as part of The Master Chief Collection.

"Super State."
Stephen Cakebread's Geometry Wars may have started life as a Project Gotham Racing Easter egg but has since taken on an intensely glowing, neon life of its own. Leon, James, Ryan and guest Sinan Kubba trace the series back to its 2003 debut on the original Xbox before safely weaving their way through all the games up to and including most recent release, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved on Vita in July 2015. "Get set for a combat drop!"
In the latest of our Halo series of podcasts, Leon, Karl, Tony and guest CJ Black (Twin Humanities) revisit the franchise's 'odd one out', Halo 3: ODST. Not starring the Spartan Master Chief but rather several of the cast of Joss Whedon's Firefly as battle-hardened commandos in action on Earth between the events of Halos 2 and 3. The panel and contributing community members also recall the hub-world which links the segments of the game together via a neo-noirish mystery plot and - of course (and repeatedly) - that OST.

'Sensi' and its sequel Sensible World of Soccer (aka SWOS) dribbled around many of their computer footy predecessors' pitfalls, before assuredly bending a 25 yard curler into the back of the charm net. Leon, Darren, Karl and guest CJ Black (Twin Humanities et al) remember their time with the entire series, from the original with the broken goalkeepers all they way through console conversions, controversial sequels and the 2007 re-release of Sensible World of Soccer '96/'97 for Xbox Live Arcade.

20 Sep 2015 | Thomas Was Alone – Cane and Rinse No.194 | 01:33:59
"Thomas was alone. Wow, what a weird first thought to have"
Josh, Ryan and Tony set up their microphones, for what was bound to be another enthralling issue of Cane and Rinse.
"I wonder what Tony is going to say about this game's narrative?" Josh pondered.
"It'll be interesting to discuss this game's use of puzzles and platforming, to define character relationships." Tony ruminated.
"Shapes! Shapes! Shapes!" Ryan really liked shapes.
And so our three intrepid podcasters set out to discuss these themes and more, as they tackled Mike Bithell's debut game, Thomas Was Alone.

As is always the case, we hear from the fabulous Cane and Rinse community and feature their creative Threes Word Reviews.

In this special edition of the Cane and Rinse podcast, Ryan Hamann interviews USA Today's top education writer, Greg Toppo.
Greg was invited to speak about his new book, The Game Believes in You: How Digital Play Can Make Our Kids Smarter. In his book, Toppo makes the argument for video games being used in schools, and he provides many inspiring examples of children who have benefitted greatly by using games to make their academic environment more engaging and rewarding.

08 Oct 2015 | Podcast special: An interview with Denis Dyack | 03:17:33
The incomparable creator of Eternal Darkness and Too Human breaks radio silence to offer us this searingly honest interview.
Leon and James are joined by Denis Dyack and Phil Haymes of multimedia innovators Quantum Entanglement for this rare chat. Over the course of more than three hours Denis takes us from Silicon Knights' earliest endeavours, through the machinations of relationships with Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft right down to the specifics of his working relationship with the likes of Kojima and Miyamoto.
Denis also bares all about the disappointment of Silicon Knights' final release, X-Men Destiny, the failed Kickstarters and even responds to us challenging his public support of the GamerGate movement.
Finally, Denis and Phil explain to us what their exciting and ambitious new initiatives with Quantum Entanglement entail, and what the future holds for the pair.
You really do not want to miss this one.
Our sincere thanks again to Denis for contacting us out of the blue and suggesting that we record a show with him and Phil.

"For England, James?"
Because we failed to do it for issue 007, finally here it is for issue 200. That's right, to polish off our fourth year of the podcast we uncover the mystery and magic of Rare's much loved license, GoldenEye 007. Leon, Brian, Darren and Tony - along with a cartel of community contributors - reminisce about the innovations that the single-player added to the genre and the hours of fun that the split-screen multiplayer brought to the party. This being Cane and Rinse, we also discuss at length whether or not the game is worth returning to now, some 18 years on from its release at the time of recording.

30 Nov 2015 | Help support us with our Patreon! | 00:08:46
What is Cane and Rinse?
Cane and Rinse is a videogames podcast and blog.
Our team of experienced enthusiasts takes a different game (or occasionally a series of games) each show and passionately discusses the experiences that title offers.
We try to be well-researched and thorough while doing our best to avoid hyperbole, pigeonholing or the stating of subjective opinions as though they are inarguable facts.
Since November 2011 Cane and Rinse has produced over 200 podcasts (every Sunday for 50 weeks of the year), each around two hours long.
As well as the main show we also produce irregular specials featuring industry figures. So far we have interviewed Denis Dyack, Keiichiro Toyama, Iain Angus, James Mielke, Paul Rose (aka Mr Biffo) and a number of others including several notable independent developers.
Alongside the main Cane and Rinse podcast, we also make Sound of Play, a podcast dedicated to our love of videogame music released every other Wednesday.
Why a Patreon and what will we do with it?
First of all it’s important to state that regardless of any donations, Cane and Rinse plans to continue with its current level of output.
Also, everything that we release and have released digitally - including podcasts, written content, video content (we also have a YouTube channel) and so on - will remain available for free to everyone.
There will be no paywalls erected, no tiers or financial goals set or stated. Nor will there be any exclusive subscriber-only content.
Any and all donations that we receive will be used to help us to continue make Cane and Rinse and perhaps, hopefully, enhance our output.
As well as contributing to our ongoing admin costs (hosting fees etc.), we would like improve our sound and production quality by investing in superior recording equipment and editing software.
In addition, we have been looking into hosting a UK-based live event for several years now, but we haven’t yet been able to commit to this due to concerns of not being able to make it worthwhile due to lack of resources.
As well as facilitating such an event, we also hope that your generous donations will also mean that we can continue to operate with no irritating, intrusive advertising appearing on the site or within the podcasts.
We simply ask those who can afford it, and who feel that the material we have produced and continue to produce is worth something to you in return, to pledge $1 US per month (or more if you wish).
If you feel that we deserve something, but would rather not commit to a monthly amount then feel free to donate once before cancelling any subsequent monthly payments.
If you are of the opinion that we are out of line and that your money would be better spent on a more worthwhile cause, then please consider the work of the amazing Special Effect.
Please accept the Cane and Rinse team’s genuine gratitude for any support that you are willing and able to give.
Thank you.
TESTIMONIALS
“This is my favourite podcast as it offers a different angle to the usual ‘what we’??ve been playing’ offerings from other podcasts.”
From ‘The World’s Best Videogame Podcasts’ by Metro GameCentral
“The show takes one video game per episode and dissects it like a science-class frog. The games chosen are usually at least a few years old in the hopes of lending some equanimity to the proceedings, after the hype or backlash that a game might have been cloaked in no longer wields any real power.”
From 'These are the Five Video Gaming Podcasts You Need in Your Life' by Jagger Gravning for Vice.com
“As always, the crew’s finer points are articulate and well reasoned. Arguments occasionally arise, but Cane and Rinse is more interested in analysis and discussion than fireworks, which is refreshing in a field often fueled by hyperactivity.”
Randall Colburn, A.V. Club

06 Dec 2015 | The Legend of Zelda – Cane and Rinse No.201 | 01:58:49
"IT'S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE! TAKE THIS."
The Cane and Rinse podcast returns for its fifth year with the start of its longest series yet. Just under 30 years ago, Nintendo released The Hyrule Fantasy: Zeruda no Densetsu for the Famicom Disk system. Much better known as The Legend of Zelda, Miyamoto and Tezuka's 1986 action RPG took influences from earlier videogames - as well as the creators' real-life experiences - but undoubtedly blazed many trails of its own. Leon, Darren, Joshua, Ryan and a glut of community contributors discuss what they enjoyed and what they didn't about playing the first, formative game of this mighty franchise.

"If this thing goes sideways and we end up on the other side, meet me at the bar. I'm buying."
Following on from issue 22 which covered Mass Effect 1 and 2, Josh, Brian, Karl and Ryan tackle the divisive final chapter of this space opera epic, Mass Effect 3. Did the panel feel like their choices throughout the series were respected? Did the characters that these four gentlemen fell in love with, get the closure they felt was deserved? ...And of course, how did they feel about that ending?
