17 Oct 2024 | 83: Brand Story Blueprint | 00:16:35
Today’s episode is a masterclass of the essential rules of effective storytelling for brands. Taking a strategic approach and incorporating what master storytellers have done for centuries, I share how to make your personal brand stories memorable with your audience. I provide a step-by-step breakdown of how to craft compelling stories that resonate with audiences, the power of conflict, clarity, and resolution in creating a memorable narrative. You’ll be able to immediately implement this approach to your brand’s stories to increase engagement and improve the results of your calls to action. Timestamps:
Key Takeaways for Business Leaders: Incorporate Conflict Early for Engagement: To captivate an audience, introduce conflict early in your storytelling. Business leaders should frame challenges or disruptions that align with their brand values, ensuring the narrative is both engaging and authentic. Use Visual Details to Set the Scene: When telling your brand story, be precise and vivid with details. This technique not only helps your audience visualize the scenario but also makes your narrative more memorable, engaging both their conscious and subconscious minds. Show Vulnerability to Build Trust: Sharing personal struggles and pivotal moments humanizes you as a leader. CEOs can leverage this vulnerability to foster deeper connections with their audience, making their brand not only memorable but also more trustworthy. Conclude with a Clear Call to Action: Every brand story should end with a purposeful and actionable outcome. Ensure that the resolution motivates your audience to take a specific, aligned action, driving both their engagement and your business objectives forward. Do you waver on making decisions because you don't want to make the wrong decision? And what kind of negative ripple effects do you fear might happen from making the wrong decision when it comes to your business? Fact: paralysis by analysis or staying safe and not taking a risk is what people do most of the time. I have done this countless times. How will you really know if you're making the right decision in business and what is the best approach? Sometimes taking the leap can backfire on us. Several years ago, before I started this business, I planned to open a business in private aviation. During the process of preparing to start that business, I decided to take a flight lesson because I wanted to know first hand the industry I was about to join and pilots respect other pilots. What happened scared the daylights out of me and helped shaped a decision that changed the trajectory of my career. In today's podcast episode, I dive into this gray area of what to consider with major business decisions and how long to wait before pulling the trigger on a decision. When is it better to play it safe? Many of us linger in indecision land and feel uncomfortable talking about these situations. Today's episode opens the conversation and discusses how to navigate the uneasy decisions and the thought process we use when making decisions.

Episode 30: The Role of Emotions in Business Decisions with Jessica Hottle What role should emotions have in your business? Should you rely on your emotions or push them away? It’s important to pay attention to your emotions to see what needs to be addressed, not to make the decision for you. It’s your response to your feelings that can lead you to bad places. In this episode, I discuss why you should consider adding podcast guest speaking as a key component of your marketing strategy as well as tips on how to get started and show up as a thought leader. Why do I recommend that you include podcast guest speaking as part of your marketing strategy? It’s important to reach out to your existing audience to nurture those relationships but consistent growth happens when you get in front of new audiences on a regular basis. Speaking as a guest expert on someone else’s podcast benefits you because that host has an established audience who trusts them. Mike was an award-winning sportscaster at KVUE for over 29 years. He was named Best Sportscaster in Austin for 17 years and Best in Texas four times. Think mindfully about how your words are coming across and speak clearly on your speaking topic, so that the audience can easily understand and follow along. Avoid jargon. Kim and Mike teach how to overcome nerves and fear with the reminder that you’re the expert on your business and your life’s stories. They share advice on how to get out of your head when you feel stuck, so that you can confidently, authentically connect with the audience and enjoy the process. Melissa lists several ways to repurpose content you already have into engaging content to grow your results on LinkedIn, so make sure to take notes. Episode 38: Strengthen Your Mindset with Laura TerrellThought Leadership SeriesToday’s guest, Laura Terrell, is an executive coach with more than 25 years of experience as a legal and business insider. Prior to coaching, she was a Special Assistant to the President at the White House, a senior level appointee at the U.S. Department of Justice, an equity partner in two large global law firms, and in-house counsel at a publicly traded company. In today’s episode, we discuss how to develop and strengthen critical mindsets needed to achieve long-term success as well as the mindsets holding us back from boldly stepping into our role as thought leaders. Laura covers how to shut down negative mindsets and tips to strengthen our minds with confidence, perseverance, and resilience in the face of setbacks. We explore how Laura has developed these mindsets and how she has helped others manage and walk through emotional and mental roadblocks holding them back from making big decisions, leading well, and stepping into new challenges. Some top tips … No one is immune to fear, especially the fear of failure. As you feel the grip of fear, interrupt the emotion by asking yourself a few key questions to help remove fear’s debilitating effect and map out a healthier, productive thought process to address the underlying issue. This shifts your mind to a positive place, helping you approach the current struggle with the view that it is possible for you to overcome it. As you make this shift, you will begin to see options appear that can help you address or mitigate the situation. 27 Jul 2022 | 39: Thought Leader series - Pitch the Media with Jody Fisher | 00:34:17
Thought Leadership SeriesIn today’s episode, we hear from our guest speaker Jody Fisher, an award-winning publicist with 20+ years of experience in New York City and national media markets. At Austin Williams, he leads the agency’s public relations practice. As a former New York City radio reporter, Jody brings a new room assignment that’s savvy to his work that seeks to make stories immediately interesting and actionable to reporters and editors leveraging his strong relationships across print, broadcasting, and digital outlets. Today’s episode discusses how to: develop a strong strategy for pitching the email, identify the right media outlets and contacts, structure your pitches, and best practices for follow-up. With PR, any time you pitch the media, the pitch needs to stand out, be actionable, and written as briefly as possible. Decisions are made very quickly in a newsroom. Reporters are bombarded with pitches each day. Not only does your pitch need to stand out, but it needs to be brief enough for the reporter to say to it in 10 seconds. Otherwise, they will pass on it. If you send a reporter something they have to think about or figure out, they will skip for something else that was an easy yes. Jody recommends the following template when pitching the media: “I’m pitching you X person who can talk about Y subject for your Z area of focus.“ This quick pitch template demonstrates that you’ve done your research, you know what they cover, what they’re looking for, and you’re matching up what you’ve got with what they need. Some top tips … When it comes to communicating and pitching, whatever you’re giving them has to be actionable and clear. You want to grab their attention with what you have and what they need. Short and simple is best. Get familiar with who covers the area that you’re working with to develop relationships so that you can meet your key targets, by subject matter and geography. Don’t sell anyone short. Learn why it’s a good idea to work with reporters at all levels, including those at the bottom rung. If you’re looking to reach out and follow up after a pitch, keep it short and simple. Don’t just follow up on checking in, share something that’s beneficial for the reporter as well, such as why you think your guest will fit into their piece or their area of focus. Tune into today’s episode to hear Jody Fisher’s expert insights into how to pitch the media as a thought leader. This episode at glance … >> ( 7:29-10:37) Jody shares his opinion on the best way of becoming a thought leader and what a thought leader is. >> (10:42-11:48) How to approach pitching and the one-sentence successful pitch template to pitch any guest for any type of media. >> (12:30-16:30) How to find the right outlets for your guest and the contact at each outlet? >> (16:40-20:20) Find out how to develop relationships and credibility with contacts in the media. >> (20:55-24:00) How and when to follow up on your pitch. Plus, the bonus piece to improve every follow up. >> (24:46-26:44) Is it still ok to call contacts at the media or is email better? >> (27:10-32:42) How to develop a strong strategy for pitching the media.

17 Aug 2022 | 41 - Be the Hero of Your Story | 00:14:36
Be The Hero of Your StoryBuckle up! Today I’m sharing my beef with something that’s commonly taught in brand storytelling - that you should be the guide, not the hero. After years of studying storytelling, brand storytelling and otherwise, creating an online course that helps business owners share better brand stories, and working with clients to craft their brand stories, I have some thoughts on the subject. People don’t typically go out of their way to read a great book, go to a movie, or hang a poster on their wall of a supporting character. Kids and adults all over the world love heroes. They want to see what a hero did, how they did it, what makes them tick, what they had to overcome. They want to cheer for a hero who can show them what’s possible in their own life. It’s the hero that fills them with new excitement and momentum to move forward - not their trainer or coach. Not that coaches and trainers aren’t important or have helpful information to share, but part of teaching is entertaining and the hero is the center of the excitement. That’s who people want to connect with - someone who has been there, done that. Listen as I share why we shy away from sharing our stories from the perspective of the hero, how to shift your perspective on sharing stories from this perspective, core pieces of great stories, how to share more of the parts your audience desperately wants to know, and a different way to think about digging into the process of finding the right details to create stories that immerse your audience in it as though they are experiencing it. A glance at today’s episode … (1:10-3:35) Why I don’t think you should think of your brand stories from the perspective of being the guide. I share why I think it’s both ok and important that you show up as the hero of your story. (3:40-5:30) What stops us from sharing our stories as the hero? (5:40-7:35) How to share your story from the hero’s perspective without feeling uncomfortable doing it. (7:40-10:00) Share stories more effectively by including these core parts. (10:05-11:57) How our minds like to mess with us that make us shy away from sharing the pieces of our story that can serve our audience the best and draw them closer to us in trust and relationship. (11:58-13:29) Another way to think about the process of what’s involved in creating great brand storytelling. 01 Sep 2022 | 43: Thought Leader series - My Favorite Takeaways from Each Episode in this Series | 00:36:06
Thought Leader series finale - My Favorite Takeaways from Each Episode in this SeriesThought Leadership SeriesThis is a solo episode in which I get to share some of my favorite takeaways from each of the 11 episodes in this series. This series includes interviews with experts who discuss topics ranging from defining exactly what a thought leader is to how to develop stronger relationships and make more sales with your audience through email marketing to how to successfully add keynote speaking to your business. I start by walking you through the approach and mindset I used to create this series and I hope you finish today’s episode inspired, with ideas to implement right away, and possibly with a desire to go back and listen to some episodes to glean more of the golden tips my guests shared. This episode at glance … >> (2:30-6:00) Episode 31 takeaways about what a thought leader is, what an audience comes to a thought leader for, reasons why you should focus on becoming one, the initial questions you should ask yourself to develop the right strategy, and how to build thought leadership into the foundation of your messaging. >> (6:10-9:38) Episode 42 takeaways for Instagram success with Amy Studer include simplifying the process by shooting and recording inside the Instagram app on your phone, unfollowing your competitors, and easy ideas for reels and stories every day. >> (9:48-11:03) Episode 40 takeaways for email marketing with Kate Doster include simplifying the process by focusing each email on only one thing, she also shares about recording yourself with an app on your phone as a faster way to figure out what to write to communicate the way you normally sound in conversations, she also gives a subtle approach to help you bring in more sales in every email you send. >> (11:05-12:35) Episode 39 takeaways for pitching the media with Jody Fisher include whittling your pitches down to a single sentence because the media is bombarded with pitches and he recommends sharing the topic you want to discuss for a particular reason or angle you know the reporter will want. For follow up, he again recommends keeping it to one sentence and adding something extra about why you think you or the person you represent is the perfect fit for the piece the reporter is writing. >> (12:35-16:05) Episode 38 takeaways for strengthen your mindset with Laura Terrell include knowing that no one is immune to fear, so never feel alone or less than simply because you feel fear. Resilience is one of the most important traits to develop. Everyone fails but what matters most is learning from the experience and understanding how to recover from it. She also shares a great way to shut down feelings of imposter syndrome by shifting the way you define it. >> (16:06-18:27) Episode 37 takeaways for growing your business on LinkedIn with Dr. Melissa Henault include showing up on LinkedIn as a business owner, not an employee. This means that your banner should include your branding, not the default plain blue banner. Also, your headline should share the solution you offer clients, not a list of titles like your job title, podcaster, author, etc. You’ll stand out on that platform and reach more of your target audience when you share authentic and vulnerable posts. >> (18:30-20:48) Episode 36 takeaways for becoming a better interviewer (for podcasters and others) with Mike and Kim Barnes include not just sticking to the pre-planned questions. Stay engaged in the interview and respond to the answers they share. It may lead you to great insights that you never would’ve found otherwise. When preparing, identify whether the focus of the interview is on the person or the topic and plan accordingly. Finally, before you start recording the interview, spend a few minutes developing a rapport with the person you’re interviewing to put them at ease and to have a more natural, comfortable conversation. >> (20:50-24:15) Episode 35 takeaways for becoming a better interview guest with Mike and Kim Barnes include thinking about your biggest fan and imagining yourself having a conversation with that person instead of thinking about everyone who may watch or listen to your interview. This helps you to relax and enjoy the conversation more, which will definitely come across to your audience. Stop imposter syndrome in its tracks and know that the person interviewing you already sees you as the expert, so you don’t need to worry about whether or not you come across that way. Think about when you have conversations about your field with colleagues and how excited and passionate you are to chat about your area of expertise. Let that flow through your interview. Finally, even though you don’t control the questions, you have complete control over every answer. Prepare your main talking points ahead of time and look for ways to include them in your answers. >> (24:20-26:55) Episode 34 takeaways for TikTok for business with Samantha Vlasceanu include understanding how to use it for your business and how to avoid the overwhelm of video creation by planning videos as part of a series. Pick a topic and break each tip into a 30-second video. This makes your content more binge-worthy and makes it easier for you to create. Spend some time upfront doing research to find your audience and identify the right hashtags to attract them. >> (26:59-29:15) Episode 33 takeaways for paid speaking with Taylorr Payne include starting the process of becoming a paid, keynote speaker by checking out speaker bureau resources to do some research. In terms of how quickly you can get results with paid speaking, the timeline is often 6-12 months, so remember that you’re playing the long game as you approach paid speaking. When it comes to pricing, you may be significantly undervaluing yourself. He gives tips on a good starting point and how to adjust from there. Also, when developing your pitch, put yourself in the shoes of an event planner and the results they are held accountable for in order to have a successful event. Show them how you can help them achieve their results. >> (29:25-34:45) Episode 32 takeaways for podcast guest speaking with me include why I shifted gears in my business this year to focus exclusively on booking my clients as podcast guest speakers. I share why I believe every business owner needs to include this strategy in their marketing plan. Essentially, it’s the only place in online marketing where your audience gets excited to show up and dive into a single piece of content for 30-60 minutes. You can build a relationship and establish the know, like, trust factor in a big way with one episode. You can get in front of an audience that’s perfectly targeted for your business that you didn’t have to spend any time creating. You’re introduced as the expert, so you don’t have to sell your credibility as hard. It’s a great way to generate leads, grow your SEO, and strengthen your brand by having a conversation with someone for 30 minutes in the middle of the workday and then quickly going back to taking care of the rest of your day. It’s extremely convenient and efficient. Keys to success include starting with a strong, clear strategy. Determine exactly what you want to be known for, who you want to get in front of, which topics will be most appealing to the hosts and audiences you want to connect with, and keep your pitches short. Include a couple of your top credibility pieces, share the connection you have with that particular show, the topic you want to discuss, and how that will benefit the audience. 27 Sep 2022 | 45: Sales series - Email marketing with Kyle Stout | 00:33:07
Email Marketing with Kyle StoutSales SeriesIn today’s episode, I talk with Kyle Stout, founder of Elevate & Scale and email marketing expert. He helps 7-figure product-based entrepreneurs elevate their brands and scale their growth. Today’s episode discusses how brand storytelling helps connect your products and services to your customers, how email marketing enhances your business and builds the relationship between your business and its customers, and tips on understanding your customers and creating products for their needs. Some top tips … Create a story that resonates with your customers. Sales often lack a human connection, leaving customers feeling like it’s a one-sided relationship. Business owners should focus on connecting with their audience, confidently sharing how their products and services speak to their customers needs and desires. Email marketing not only drives sales but it continues to nurture relationships between businesses and their customers. To speak more directly to your target audience, create customer personas to help you get inside the heads of your customers, identifying what they like, how to appeal to them, and most importantly, how your products or services will solve their problems or needs. Many business owners fear that all emails must promote or sell a product and miss the opportunity to connect with their customers. By sending fun holiday emails, weekly newsletters, and emails educating them about a specific product, service, or feature, businesses show customers they genuinely care for them. 05 Oct 2022 | 46: Sales series - Understanding and Owning Your Confidence with Nicole Kalil | 00:38:53
Understanding and Owning Your Confidence with Nicole KalilSales SeriesIn today’s episode, I talk with Nicole Kalil, an author, leadership strategist, respected coach, and host of “This Is Woman’s Work” podcast. Nicole is passionate about redefining women’s work, and coaching women in business on what is and isn’t serving women and leaders within organizations. Today’s episode discusses what confidence actually is, the ways it differs from what society has led women to believe it is, and how to combat harmful mindsets and behaviors that derail women from building that true confidence from within. Some top tips … Recognize that true confidence is essentially just trusting yourself and that it is internal. Confidence is not a feeling you get through external sources (ie. compliments) but a conscious choice that you make. It’s not “fake it till you make it,” but “choose it till you become it.” Some examples of mindsets and behaviors that can derail you from building true confidence from within are being too judgemental and comparing yourself to others, listening to head-trash, trying to achieve constant perfection, overthinking, and seeking external validation. To combat these derailers, it’s important to take action, not feeling intimidated by failure, utilizing positive affirmations during moments of doubt, and not overcommitting but still holding yourself accountable to the commitments you do make. 19 Jan 2023 | 55: Book Writing & Publishing Tips with Dr. Bobby Brewer | 00:31:00
Author SeriesIn today’s episode, I speak with Dr. Bobby Brewer, pastor, and author of, “UFOs: 12 Things Everyone Should Know (a Christian perspective)”. He is not only an author but has also served as a pastor in evangelical Bible churches across Phoenix and co-hosted a radio show for fifteen years. Today’s episode discusses how Bobby approached writing his most recent book in comparison to his previous works. He offers relevant advice to new authors about how to get their work published in the evolving publishing world. With personal anecdotes, Bobby emphasizes the importance of thoroughly researching your topic, being willing to do what publishers helped with previously, and understanding your niche in the industry. Some top tips … Make it a daily practice to work on your book even when you don’t feel inspired. Inspiration comes and goes, but even if you are not writing, you can spend time researching people to interview, and publishers to pitch, learning about your audience, or defining your niche. Utilize the resources at your disposal. Plenty of interview research can be conducted in your own backyard. It can be over Zoom, email, or with people related to your topic in your state. Networking is also a big part of book promotion, so utilize your immediate circle and see where their networks can take you. Self promote! Even if it feels uncomfortable, it is necessary to get your book circulating. Anyone can write a book, but getting people to read it is the hard part. Get familiar with different social media platforms and just start posting. 20 Feb 2023 | 57: Maximize Opportunities as an Author with Kerrie Droban | 00:44:07
Maximize Opportunities as an Author with Award-winning Author, Kerrie DrobanAuthor SeriesIn today’s episode, I talk with Kerrie Droban, an award-winning true crime author and criminal & family attorney. With numerous appearances and interviews on national television and radio shows, she has established herself as an expert on the pathology of the criminal mind, motorcycle gangs, and a mentor to new and aspiring true crime writers. Today’s episode discusses how Kerrie has grown a successful writing career. Some top tips … Writers and aspiring writers should say yes to opportunities when they come your way. When conducting research for a book, Kerrie recommends getting your information as quickly as possible because you don’t know if sources will continue to be available the entire time you’re writing your book. Don’t wait to start until you know your exact mission, purpose, etc. You will discover that along the way and it will make sense in hindsight. Value the story that you’re telling. It should come from the soul, that you’re passionate about, that you want to tell, and feel like there’s value in telling that story. Make sure you love the subject matter of your book because you’ll spend a ton of time immersed in what you’re writing and researching because it will consume you. Never, ever, ever rely on your publisher to do your promotion for you. This is your business and it’s up to you to promote it. Promotion starts nine months in advance of your book release. That makes the difference between sharing something that reads like a journalistic piece or police report vs. a compelling story that leads people to act. >> (28:50-34:30) How to write consistently when you are a mom, have another career, and have a deadline. >> (35:00-42:00) Tips to promote your books and your brand. 05 Apr 2023 | 58: PR for Authors - Maximize Your Efforts | 00:20:13
PR for Authors - Maximize Your EffortsAuthor SeriesIn today’s solo episode, I share tips and strategies to plan the PR for your book release at the start of the process instead of after you finish writing, to get the impact you want with your book. I discuss what this means for growing your brand, your audience, and decisions to make that can make a big difference in the success of your book and getting your message out to your audience. Some top tips … During this series I’ve interviewed a variety of authors who used different approaches (self-publishing, a hybrid approach, working with one of the world’s biggest publishers) and they each wrote in completely different genres. The most important thing for you to realize is that regardless of your approach, your genre, or topic, at the end of the day, you are the author and the one responsible for promoting and selling your book. To grow your brand as you write your book, spend time sharing content about the big picture of what you want to be known for and the core message(s) of your book. Do not put this off until right before your book comes out. Start focusing on your book promotion at least nine months before your book comes out. Once your book is released, the promotion window is approximately six months. You want to have as much prepared as possible before the start of that six-month window. That is the time to execute all of the hard work you’ve done up front. Start by thinking about how you want to brand yourself and how this book fits into it. You may want to start a podcast, a blog, or a YouTube channel to begin building the SEO around the core topic you want to be know for, which should include a core theme of your book. I share several ways you can share content to grow your brand on your topic without giving away any of your book’s content. Book tours are now done almost exclusively on podcasts. I share how they work and what you need to do to prepare. This episode at glance … >> (2:45-3:30) It is up to you as the author to build your brand, your audience, and your sales. Don’t rely on the content of your book, publisher, or anything else to grow your brand and sales for you. You are responsible for promoting your book. >> (3:40-4:20) A few ways to start growing your brand as you write your book. >> (4:30-5:50) A mindset shift about thinking of writing your book as your side hustle and your full-time business is promoting your book and your brand. >> (7:20-5:50) Start by thinking about how you want to brand yourself and how this book fits into it. >> (8:30-10:25) Ideas of the types of content you can share to build your brand without sharing excerpts of your book. >>( 11:55-) How to plan a podcast book tour Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts “I love Christie and The Business That Story Built podcast!” Does that sound like you? 20 Jun 2023 | 60: Target the Right Prospects with Mike Maynard | 00:33:40
Target the Right Prospects with Mike MaynardPR SeriesToday’s guest is Mike Maynard, managing director and CEO of The Napier Group, a U.K.-based PR and Marketing agency for B2B technology companies. “A sequence of happy accidents” is how he describes his path to his role now. He started off studying engineering in college. After seeking more enjoyment, he ran a technical support team and later went into marketing at the same company. In 2001, during the market crash, he bought an agency, Napier. To prevent it shrinking and dying out, he went the extra mile for clients which made it the agency it is today. Today’s episode discusses his unique career path, his tips for targeting the right prospects with account-based marketing, and his perspective on global PR trends. Some top tips … In the sales process, the most important thing is turning down the wrong prospects. The best relationships are ones in which you can do things for the client that no one else can and that you enjoy the relationship with the client. The PR industry struggles with being able to provide meaningful metrics. Mike recommends the AMEC framework, which takes into account the objectives, strategy, activity, outcomes, and impact. Account-based marketing is a hyper-focused approach to marketing in which you hand-select specific companies you want to work with and focus your efforts on them, not just specific sectors you want to work with but the exact companies. This is helpful for professional services businesses and others in which you build a working relationship with your client or there are only a few major companies in your market that move the needle. On the other hand, if you have a business that doesn’t only have a few key players or your business is one in which you don’t need a working relationship with your customer, then a mass market approach can be the right choice. Today, the ethics of your company is equally as important as what your company does and the features and benefits it provides. Communicating this matters from a PR perspective.

08 Jun 2023 | 59: What Matters Most in Life | 00:07:14
Focus on What Matters in LifeIn today’s solo episode, I share my perspective on what truly matters when looking back on my life. Social media has greatly intensified comparison and makes it easy to get caught up in what you might miss out on that seems important and can make you lose sight of what matters most in life. I’ve had some amazing experiences as well as difficulties throughout life. Looking back, the moments I treasure the most aren’t when I met astronauts and heads of state or flew a plane. To truly have a meaning-filled life, shift your focus from attaining material things and unique experiences to allowing the experiences you find yourself in to build your character. At the end of life, you’ll want to look back and know you did your best with what you were given. It’s really all about doing what’s right in the eyes of our Maker. Some top tips … What is politically correct today won’t be politically correct a year from now. Concern yourself with things that stand the test of time, invest in who you are, and invest in your character. No matter your circumstances in life, strive to do right within the eyes of our Maker, that is all that really matters. The only way to develop stronger character is by shifting your thought life to be full of the right thoughts and to rid it of the wrong thoughts. Act with integrity and seek fulfillment in things that honor our Creator. Humility is greatly overlooked by many in society today. Despite what many may say, it’s not all about you and exalting yourself. It’s about serving those around you and building into others. Your position in life is not always about you. We were put on this Earth to serve others, wherever that may be. This episode at glance … >> (1:50-2:44) So much of reality is distorted now and detracts from what really matters in the scheme of things. I’ve had the chance to meet extraordinary people, travel the world, work in incredible professional jobs, but the one thing that truly matters is the character I have or haven’t lived in the situations I’ve found myself in. >> (2:47-3:06) Within my experiences, I think back and consider, “Did I insert myself into the right conversations and stand up for what was right? Did I remove myself from situations I should not be a part of and hold my tongue when I shouldn’t speak?” >> (3:07-3:39) What is right? What stands the test of time? As trends, ideas, and perspectives shift throughout our lifetime, focus on the things that truly stand the test of time. There is only one truth, and applying it to your life changes everything. >> (3:55-4:50) Former Secretary of the Treasury John Snow, who I worked with during my time at The White House, is a great example of someone who did what was right and built others up even when no one was watching. He was the embodiment of a good leader in the way that he acted and spoke to me and everyone he encountered there. He didn’t make it all about himself. >>(5:04-5:41) Philippians 4:8 is a verse that really resonates with me. What we do and what we think sets the foundation for who we are as people. It’s easy to get into a negative spiral. If you’re wondering the types of thoughts you should have, this verse helps spell it out. >> (5:48-6:19) David and Joseph in the Old Testament remind me that no matter your situation or circumstances, serve others first. It’s not all about you. Focusing on exalting yourself won’t lead to happiness and fulfillment. Focusing on building your character will end up building a better life. 30 Jun 2023 | 61: The Ethics of AI in PR with Cayce Myers | 00:44:59
The Ethics of AI in PR with Cayce MyersPR SeriesIn this episode of the PR series, I interview Cayce Myers, a lawyer and professor of Public Relations and director of graduate studies at the School of Communications at Virginia Tech. His focus is on media history, political communication and laws that affect public relations practice. Today’s episode focuses on AI’s place in PR, the ethics of AI, regulations surrounding it, what practitioners should and shouldn't do, as well as considerations to make before adding it. With Myers' background in PR history, politics, and the law, we also discuss what we can learn from PR history, shifts occurring in social media due to AI, and more. Some top tips … AI is a disruptive technology as was social media and the internet. It will change the field of communications, but he doesn't think it will replace it. Learning from the past, technological innovations have been absorbed into public relations and now we think of it as indispensable. Generative AI, like Chat GPT, can be used to enhance work quality, cut costs, and improve workflow but requires oversight by a human who reviews, edits, and fact checks the work product. There is a lot of discussion right now in the PR field about how to become a sophisticated user of generative AI and train others to become sophisticated and responsible users of AI. Additionally, generative AI users in PR need to remember that in order to stand out in the marketplace, you can’t just spit out what generative AI gives you because you won’t be a thought leader until you use what you’re given and say something unique about it. To build any career, you need to offer a unique perspective, not the status quo that would be generated by AI like Chat GPT. Government regulation of AI is an ongoing discussion and should be followed. The current regulatory issues are privacy, discrimination, and intellectual property. For public relations purposes, copyrights of intellectual property won’t be enforced if the content is produced more by AI than by a human. 14 Jul 2023 | 62: Content That Moves Your Business Forward with Erika Heald | 00:45:38
In this episode of the PR series, I interview Erika Heald about all things content creation. Today, planning and managing your content can become frustrating and overwhelming. When it comes to content, it's easy to get wrapped up in the idea you’re creating content for the sake of it, but it is crucial to focus on the goals. The goal of today’s episode is to provide you with practical tips for navigating the world of content strategy that will build your confidence and your business growth. Some top tips … Thought leadership has become a must-include component of most brands' PR and brand-building efforts. It is so easy to post content for the sake of posting but focus on posting content that is authentic and starts conversations within your online community. Staying organized is the best way to reduce stress when planning your content. Utilize tools such as editorial calendars, content templates, and AI to maximize your efficiency and to ensure no aspect of your content strategy or plan is overlooked; even the smallest details matter! Make sure your content strategies are rooted in solid goals and objectives. Whether creating content for your next post or trying to determine the channel that best fits you, remember that your goals and objectives are the ultimate destinations for success among your audience and your strategy. Going viral should not be your goal! Going viral is a vanity objective, not a business objective, and it will not add monetary value to your brand. Remember, you are trying to share your message with a specific audience, not a giant one. Commit to avoiding random acts of content marketing. Create useful content that your audience will enjoy consuming; don’t create something to fill your editorial calendar, create content you would spend time engaging with if you didn’t work for your company. This episode at glance … >> (2:45-4:13) Thought leadership has become a must-include component of most brands' PR and brand-building efforts. But what exactly IS thought leadership? Thought leadership is conveyed by a person who is unafraid to share their opinions, even the unpopular ones. Thought leaders make a huge difference in your content, stand out from the crowd and truly connect with your audience. >>(4:16-5:30) Find different people to be thought leaders for your content. Utilizing various expertise will ensure you can meet all of your content strategy needs and allow your audience to connect with your brand more uniquely and authentically. >>(5:40-8:07) Content pillars are essential to marketing on every channel because they help you define what you want to talk about and what you want to be known for. You don’t always need to rely on keywords for pillars; focus on what drives a true connection with your audience. >>(8:10-8:59) Content marketing is all about getting to know your audience. Similar to servant leadership, you’re trying to be helpful. Rather than trying to sell your content you’re trying to be relentlessly helpful with your content. >>(9:33-13:33) How do I know my content drives business growth? Take a look at Gini Dietrich’s ‘PESO Model’. This model will help you understand that all content is interconnected, and you can create content that works best for your audience, messages, and objectives. >>(13:42-17:57) Editorial calendars help you organize your ideas, objectives, and pillars. This calendar is a flexible way to help you determine what you want to do and when you want to do it; it will also keep you accountable for committing to a specific time and activity. >>(18:11-21:30) A common mistake in creating growth-focused content strategies is focusing too much on what your competitors do. If you only focus on sharing your version of what your competitors share, you won’t stand out as a unique voice in your space. >>(21:40-24:55) The best way to gain momentum on a small budget is to make sure you’re creating and designing content with all the repurposing options in mind. Utilizing tools such as Copy.ai, Grammarly, Tailwind, and Canva are great AI tools for creating content and copy. >> (25:40-33:51) Erika’s Twitter chat and Linkedin live were ultimately inspired by the questions, ‘How can we have a great conversation with an expert while also allowing our community to give their input, share opinions, and ask questions?’ It is a great way to drive brand recognition, engage the audience, and receive helpful feedback. >>(31:49-31:24) When developing a plan and determining the right channels for your brand, focus on the places where you have a solid audience to engage with. Try a new form of content per quarter and figure out what you’re comfortable with. Be realistic with your expectations and try things that are manageable for you. >> (33:55-36:26) While going viral seems exciting, that should never be the main goal of your post. Going viral is a vanity objective, not a business objective. Viral content does not serve your brand because it is a broad approach, not one that is focused around your target market. You aren’t trying to reach a vast audience, you’re trying to reach a specific audience. >>(36:56-42:27) When pursuing paid speaking opportunities, start by defining your thought leadership strategy and what you really want to be known for, knowing you can offer something unique to the conversation. Start with pieces that are in your comfort zone and pursue opportunities where you know someone involved in selecting the speakers or where you can get an intro. Taking advantage of low-hanging fruit is a great place to start. Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts “I love Christie and The Business That Story Built podcast!” Does that sound like you? 27 Jul 2023 | 63: How B2B Can Leverage Influencer Marketing with Lindsey Gamble | 00:37:57
How B2B Can Leverage Influencer Marketing with Lindsey GamblePR SeriesIn this episode of the PR series, I interview Lindsey Gamble about the best ways for B2B companies to take advantage of influencer marketing to grow their business. Lindsey is an Associate Director of Influencer Innovation at Mavrck, a leading all-in-one influencer marketing platform. He has more than five years experience working with enterprise consumer brands on creator and influencer marketing campaigns and a deep understanding of the creator economy. Some top tips … LinkedIn and YouTube are great platforms to connect with and create influencer campaigns with B2B influencers. They can write a LinkedIn post about your company, have your company sponsor their newsletter, have a joint webinar, or consider working with them as a consultant to help generate more ideas and content about how to get your brand in front of your audience with your message. They can help you reverse engineer your target audience’s customer journey and offer another perspective of how and where you might build campaigns to achieve your goals. Focus less on what’s popular in influencer marketing for the B2C market but more about what appeals to your target audience for your buying decision. It may be much less glamorous but much more effective. If you want to pursue an influencer but don’t know the right way to price it for them, it’s better to reach out and have a conversation with them to share how you’re thinking about working with them and ask what their budget would be. That can help to avoid turning them off simply because you didn’t know their pricing. Alternative ways to work with influencers include hiring to be customer service at a tradeshow to help draw more of your audience, hire them to host your podcast or YouTube channel, hire them to be a part-time member of your marketing team, and consider working with creatives to help you solve problems or be a part of the brainstorming aspect. They’re experts who know their industries but may think differently than an in-house marketing team or management. Be as clear and specific as possible in the creative brief to avoid confusion or receiving content that doesn’t meet your expectations. At the same time, make sure that you give them enough room to create content that reflects them, their audience, and allows them to use their creativity.
>> (6:45-10:30) Strategy and tactics that often work well for B2B >> (10:40-11:45) Where to begin, identifying goals and budget, consider bringing in an influencer as a consultant to help with that process >> (11:45-12:45) Partner with an influencer platform like Mavrck or manually reach out to those you’re considering working with on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, or email >> (15:25-17) Best practices and what to avoid in working with influencers >> (17:15-18:30) Alternative ways to work with influencers >> (19:30-24:45) Where issues can pop up in the process and how to avoid them >> (24:50-29:05) campaign results, expectations, and the realities of the current customer journey >> (29:10-35:00) How AI is changing the influencer space

14 Aug 2023 | 64: Pitching Journalists with Jered Martin | 00:38:55
Pitching Journalists with Jered MartinPR SeriesIn this episode I interview Jered Martin, Co-founder and COO of OnePitch about the best ways to establish relationships with the media, pitch them, and grow your relationships with them. OnePitch is a simple and effective tool for PR and marketing professionals to quickly identify and connect with relevant journalists. The tool uses a combination of AI and machine learning to analyze pitches and press releases and match them with journalists who write about the same topics.
Before you begin pitching the media, identify the right journalists for your niche and read their articles and social media to see what they write about, include, and what they may find helpful. Before pitching a journalist for the first time, send them an intro email that includes who you are, what your company is, what your clients do, and why they are important to the journalist’s readers - even in bullets - then offer yourself as a resource. Just like anywhere else in life, make a connection first before asking for anything. Remember that you’re working with a human and focus on making genuine connections and building relationships. Keep your pitches short and to the point: who, what, why. Bullets are great. Highlight why what you’re sending matters to this specific journalist and don’t take up too much of their time. Include helpful links and attachments to provide additional supportive details. Also, reference their previous work that you believe shows a connection with what you’re pitching now. Make sure you’ve actually read the article and can speak to it intelligently. Follow-up emails are a good place to include photos or a media kit as opposed to sending with the original pitch. Wait at least 48 hours before sending and make sure that these provide additional value. Ask the journalist if what you’re sending is interesting and helpful to them. When a journalist wants to speak with you, send your availability as fast as you can, and it’s ok to send them a calendar link to book time with you, to avoid too much back-and-forth with scheduling. When a journalist includes you or your company in a piece, always send them a thank you note or email. Share it on your socials, email your list, and mention the journalist and publication by name. Some even run ads promoting the piece to lead prospects to their funnels.

28 Aug 2023 | 65: Reputation Management & Crisis Communication with Pat Ford | 00:45:44
PR SeriesIn this episode I interview Pat Ford, a Professional-in-Residence at the University of Florida and was the former CEO of Burson-Marstellar, about what reputation management means, why it matters for the success of your business, and how to prepare for a crisis before you have one.
The more goodwill you demonstrate to your audience strengthens your reputation enough to withstand some negativity. If you don’t put forth the time and effort to fill it enough, anything negative about your company can potentially sink your business. It’s like filling a kitchen sink with water or filling a reservoir. If you pour one cup of contaminated water into a kitchen sink, you’ve ruined the water. If you’ve filled a reservoir, one cup of contaminated water can be balanced by the rest. The pre-crisis phase of a crisis communication plan happens when everything is going fine during everyday business. You always need to be ready, because if not, you won’t be ready when it’s needed. The crisis management team should include the company’s head of PR or communications, someone in operations, the general counsel or someone from legal, someone from finance who deals with investors and funding sources, the social media manager, HR, and CIO or head of cybersecurity. You can’t always trust the first reports you hear about a crisis. Just like during the fog of war, a crisis Don’t underestimate how crucially important your employees are during a crisis. According to Harold Burson, “Your employees are someone’s best expert on your company. They are either your greatest ambassador or your fiercest critic.” Before issuing a corporate apology, be ready to hear stories and express sympathy and concern for those who were affected as you learn the facts about who/what is to blame. The fog of crisis is confusing and filled with high emotions. Wait to issue a response until you find definitive facts. Regardless of whether or not the company is to blame, the public always expects them to lead the solution. If you haven’t refreshed your crisis plan at least once in the past year, it may be obsolete. >> (5:05-7:00) An equation to measure and improve your brand’s reputation >> (7:05-10:00) Kitchen sink vs. reservoir example of reputation management >> (10:30-12:05) The Page Principles >> (12:10-22:00) How to create a crisis plan >> (22:00-24) What to anticipate during a crisis >> (24:15-30:30) How Domino’s Pizza came out stronger after a crisis and what others can learn >> (30:35-32:15) How Tylenol’s historic recall in the ‘80s changed the industry >> (32:35-34:00) Resist the temptation to call an end to a crisis too soon >> (34:05-35:00) Rebuilding a reputation >> (35:05-41:30) Handling corporate apologies Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts “I love Christie and The Business That Story Built podcast!” Does that sound like you? 20 Sep 2023 | 67 - Why Awards Matter & How to Create Successful Entries with Mike McDougall | 00:32:51
Why Awards Matter & How to Create Successful Entries with Mike McDougallPR SeriesIn this episode I interview Mike McDougall, CEO of McDougall Communications, winner of 22 PRSA Silver Anvil Awards among many others, and judge of a host of different awards programs. We discuss why awards should be an important area to focus on in your business. From the ways they improve your skills and take your business to the next level, internally, to the various ways they can enhance your thought leadership and reputation, externally, we dive into what makes an entry award-winning and how to get there.
When applying for awards for the first time, start small. Choose two or three awards that make sense for the audiences you’re trying to reach. Don’t approach it with the attitude that you need to win the first time you apply for an award. Look for feedback to learn about the way this award is judged. It’s a process and involves a lot of learning. Awards writing has a unique style and over the years, you’ll get the rhythm of it. Start planning one or two years ahead, identifying the right awards that will resonate with your audience, and learn what it will take to achieve what the award requires. For nearly any awards program, winning entries are able to tell a story that the judge can understand and enjoy, demonstrating a sacrifice that was made to make the program unique and special, risks that were taken in creating your project or product, add humanity and a personal touch to your submission showing how you were able to change someone’s life through the program - even for a moment - demonstrates a wow factor, how your program made a sustained impact that leads to brand recognition, and also including meaningful metrics to show the difference before and after. If you decide not to follow the entry guidelines the way they’re written, your submission will immediately be removed from consideration. Something many don’t consider is including how you could’ve done better in some areas that you can improve upon in the future. This shows your humanity and tells the judge you recognize you’re not perfect and you’re aware of your shortcomings. This episode at glance … >> (3:55-5:00) The different ways awards help your business >> (5:05-6:15) How the structure of award entries can improve your business, internally >> (6:20-8:00) How to identify the right awards for your business >> (8:00-9:45) The best way to begin the process of awards entries >> (9:45-12:00) Give yourself at least several weeks to write the entry >> (13:30-14:20) Even if you don’t win, it offers other benefits to grow your reputation & offer recognition >> (14:25-19:00) What sets apart winning entries from the rest >> (20:50-21:40) The importance of reading and following the entry guidelines >> (21:45-24:25) Mindsets and objectives that better position you for awards >> (24:25-27:00) How to use awards to enhance thought leadership >> (27:00-29:00) How to use awards to enhance your reputation Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts “I love Christie and The Business That Story Built podcast!” Does that sound like you? 05 Oct 2023 | 68 - The PESO Model with Gini Dietrich | 00:31:09
PR SeriesIn this episode I interview Gini Dietrich, creator of the PESO Model and founder of Spin Sucks. We discuss the PESO Model approach to communications strategy. For those unfamiliar with it, this approach was launched in 2014 and is now taught to every PR, marketing, and communications student in the United States and talked about by marketing and PR firms nationwide. It’s a pretty big deal when your approach becomes an industry standard in less than 10 years. We discuss how this happened, why it matters, what it is, how to implement it, measure it, and where the industry is headed next. Some top tips … The PESO Model was developed by Gini Dietrich to avoid the peaks and valleys that naturally come from solely focusing on media relations. By expanding to incorporate owned media, shared media, and paid media into your communications strategy, in addition to media relations, you can continue to build awareness, lead generation, and more when you don’t have a great press piece coming out that month. The PESO Model is best implemented by starting with owned media (including blogs, podcasts, and videos), adding shared next (social media), and then moving to earned (media relations) and paid (social media ads, sponsored content, and email marketing). Everyone should at least measure direct traffic, organic traffic, and branded search with Google Analytics. When direct traffic increases month over month, it demonstrates that your communications program that builds awareness is working. Organic traffic shows that your content, social media, and media relations are working in driving people to your website. By going into Google Trends and typing in your company name, if you see an increase in searches for your brand, then your PESO components are doing their job as well. If you haven’t yet experimented with Chat GPT, start by typing in a prompt for something you’re working on, like an article, and ask it for 500 words on your topic or headline. It won’t be the final draft but it will be a first draft and will help you save time. Gini uploaded a podcast script and asked it to optimize for search, write some headlines, write a meta description, and write me seven tweets. Again, it wasn’t the final product but it was a timesaver for a first draft. This episode at glance … >> (5:00-6:30) What is the PESO Model and why was it created >> (6:30-10:30) The strategic order to approach implementing the PESO Model >> (10:30-13:00) Overlap and differences between marketing and PR >> (13:05-19:00) What to measure and how to maximize measurement insights to grow your business >> (21:00-25:00) What do PR and corporate communicators need to consider in light of Chat GPT moving away from search engine results pages >> (26:00-27:40) How to get your message in front of journalists when departments are shrinking and they are doing the work of 5-6 people Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts “I love Christie and The Business That Story Built podcast!” Does that sound like you? 17 Nov 2023 | 69: Meaningful Metrics for PR with Mark Weiner | 01:07:39
Meaningful Metrics for PR with Mark WeinerPR SeriesIn this episode I interview Mark Weiner, the PR industry’s leading expert on meaningful metrics for PR, to help businesses and PR pros understand how to successfully communicate with each other, develop fruitful relationships, and dive into the details of data that shows what’s working, what needs to change, and how to make strategic decisions based on data from PR metrics. Believe it or not, this is a heated topic in the PR world because it has long been difficult to find extremely helpful PR metrics. A lot has changed in recent years and we discuss best practices, how to get the PR pro and the client speaking the same language to understand what success looks like, what’s possible to measure, and how to set expectations. If you don’t understand the values and speak the language of data that executives speak, it will be very challenging to communicate the effectiveness of PR efforts. Getting on the same page with communication up front and identifying exactly what success looks like is essential to successful PR efforts in the eyes of the client. While you can spend a lot of money on price promotion advertising to make more money in the short run, the money often stops when the ads stop because people are more cost sensitive and less loyal today. It’s like turning on and off a spigot. PR doesn’t have diminishing returns the same way as advertising. When the ad stops running, they cease to provide returns but PR lives online for years and will continue to serve you, delivering a much better return on investment than advertising. The more involved the decision of the buyer, the more online research they are likely to perform before making a decision or even talking to a salesperson. PR stories and online reviews can carry much more sway than ads for buyers. Taking your client through a PR audit up front is an important element in setting your objectives. 07 Dec 2023 | 70: Maximizing Social Media with Sarah Bugeja | 00:40:13
PR SeriesIn this episode I interview Sarah Bugeja, the VP of Marketing for Later, the social media management software company. We discuss unique challenges that B2B business owners have with social media as well as how to more effectively take advantage of all that social media has to offer your business. Many B2B companies don’t take advantage of differentiating their business from others in their space with their creative content on social media, so many competitors begin to look and sound the same. A recipe for successful content on LinkedIn and other platforms is making sure that it is entertaining and interesting. Sharing the stories of your wins and losses - and doing it in a way that uses layman’s terms, so that others outside of your industry can follow along. Your vulnerability will draw your audience to your willingness to be authentic and show that you don’t only share a highly-curated feed, making them more inclined to trust you and follow you for authentic tips and help. When repurposing content, think about where else you will want it to live before you create it. Look for opportunities for partnerships and collaborations to get in front of new audiences you want to target. Identify business development activities that can draw your audience to you. Prioritize your efforts to show up consistently online in a way that will raise your credibility for prospects, media, and others who are looking for someone who does what you do. 29 Dec 2023 | 73: Encore of Ep. 62 - Content That Moves Your Business Forward with Erika Heald | 00:46:20
In this episode of the PR series, I interview Erika Heald on all things content creation and digital marketing. Today, managing your digital marketing can become frustrating and overwhelming. When it comes to content, it's easy to get wrapped up in the idea you’re creating content for the sake of it, but it is crucial to focus on the goals. The goal of today’s episode is to provide you with practical tips and tricks for navigating the world of content strategy that will build your confidence and your business growth. Your messaging needs to stand out in a crowded marketplace, and aligning your brand with an archetype can create deeper connections with your target audience. Be Media-Ready with the Right Assets – Success in media requires preparation. Invest in high-quality visuals, strong website copy, and a comprehensive press kit that includes key messaging, talking points, and consistent branding. This allows your brand to maximize media opportunities when they arise. Write Successful Pitches for Journalists – Tailored, specific pitches are key to capturing a journalist’s attention. Instead of mass emails, focus on quality over quantity by researching the journalist’s beat and offering relevant stories that align with their past work and interests. Maximize Media Opportunities – Media coverage should be leveraged across multiple channels. Repurpose content for social media, newsletters, and future media pitches to extend its impact. Strategic follow-ups with other publications can also keep your story in the news cycle. 17 Sep 2024 | 79: Maximize Your Personal Brand on Social Media with Ashley Mason | 00:33:18
In today’s episode, my guest is Ashley Mason, the founder of Dash of Social, a content marketing agency. We explore how social media can transform your brand, where business leaders should begin with personal branding, the role of humanized content, what no longer works, and areas to pay attention. Ashley shares actionable advice on content pillars, avoiding social media burnout, and which platforms can help business leaders in B2B establish thought leadership and increase brand visibility. Timestamps:
Key Takeaways: Start with Clear Content Pillars: Before diving into social media, identify your content pillars—what you want to be known for. This helps focus your strategy and ensures your message aligns with your goals and target audience. Consistency Over Frequency: Posting consistently, even just once a week, is more effective than trying to flood your audience with content. The goal is to establish a rhythm that your followers can depend on, which keeps you top of mind without burning out. Humanize Your Brand: Personal content that shows the human side of your leadership is key to building trust. Sharing achievements, challenges, and personal insights makes your audience relate to you and, in turn, more likely to engage with your brand. Metrics Beyond Likes: Focus on metrics that show deeper engagement, like comments, shares, and direct website traffic. These are more meaningful indicators of whether your content is resonating with your audience than likes alone.
