22 Jul 2024How to feel like the hottest sh*t to ever walk the earth, pt 1: The Comments Section with E & V00:44:47

This week we're kicking off with part 1 of a 2 parter about a huuuge topic: confidence. We’re getting into the nitty-gritty of self-love and confidence, which are sneaky aspects of our lives that impact making financial decisions.

No one is scrutinising us as much as we do ourselves, and it’s human nature (and conditioning) to think that a shiny new thing, like an outfit, makeup or even a diet program, will sort out all our insecurities. Fortunately, the best fix is free and usually what we actually need is a shift from seeking external validation to cultivating internal confidence. Listen in to find out how you can make that shift both online and offline, and how you can also be a positive force to those around you!

20 Sep 2023How to get off the spending hamster wheel00:37:58

Have you found yourself in a spending hamster wheel? Stuck in a cycle that seems impossible to break, with an urge to spend money, even when it doesn't align with your goals? This solo episode I’m breaking down the cycle, showing you how to identify what motivates your spending, and understand the emotional needs behind the spending. I’m sharing my own experiences of being stuck in this cycle and feeling like my financial outcomes were out of my control. I've learned to step off that hamster wheel and take control of my financial behaviour. This process involves identifying the motivator behind my spending, understanding the needs I’m trying to meet, and redirecting my behaviour in healthier ways. Rather than just focusing on cutting spending, it's essential to treat the underlying causes of your financial behaviour. By breaking the cycle and reprogramming your responses, you can achieve better financial outcomes and build self-trust. It's not about avoiding spending altogether but making conscious and empowered financial decisions.

Episode highlights:

  • Understanding the spending hamster wheel, and the steps you can take to break it
  • Uncover the underlying emotional needs driving your spending behaviour.
  • How to redirect your energy and behaviour toward more productive alternatives.
  • Building self-trust by consciously practising new spending behaviours and making mindful choices.

I want you to think about the need that you try and meet when you spend money. Is it an emotion that you are trying to soothe? Is it a feeling you're trying to obtain? Is it about control?
Emma [16:52]

If you could buy who you wish you were, if you could buy your way out of low self esteem, then we wouldn't be here working through this.
Emma [26:57]

You can have peace from your spending decisions. You can feel truly in control, not just a perceived sense of control.
Emma [32:23]

Learning how to spend money is not something that we're taught, and it's not something that's covered often in personal finances until you meet me.
Emma [35:17]

15 May 2024How to cultivate an ROI mindset across 6 areas of life and money00:32:22

Ever wish you could do a quick return on investment calculation on that roomier flight ticket you’re eyeing off? It turns out, you kinda can! In this episode, I’m exploring the concept of Return on Investment (ROI) beyond its traditional business context, applying it to personal finance and everyday life. By adopting an ROI mindset, you can build financial confidence, wellness, and a positive relationship with your money. We'll dive into six key areas: spending, savings, debt, time, career, and self-investment. By making informed decisions tailored to your individual values and goals you can maximise those returns, regardless of whether they’re financial, lifestyle, or emotional.

Thanks for investing your time listening to this episode and don't forget to give the ROI mindset a red hot go, and let me know what changes you're making over on socials!

Episode highlights:

  • Good debt or bad debt? Evaluating the ROI of debt can reveal whether it leads to valuable financial or lifestyle improvements.
  • Treating time as a currency allows you to make decisions that maximise your personal and professional returns.
  • Viewing yourself as an asset and investing in personal growth, skills, and well-being can yield significant long-term returns, enriching your life and career.

“Cultivating an ROI mindset allows you to assess how you are evolving and how you can evolve your financial behaviour to keep up with that evolution"
Emma [05:06]

“Having this transactional view of what am I putting in and what am I getting out can be really beneficial in helping you reclaim the decisions that you're making."
Emma [20:19]

“You are your own investment vehicle, baby. You can get yourself up and get stuff out of you that enriches your life."
Emma [27:14]

03 Jan 202424 goals for 202400:49:29

It’s 2024, and I’ve set 24 goals for myself, my finances, and my business. From spontaneous trips to doubling my podcast listenership, these goals reflect a mix of building on past achievements and future growth. Balancing bold targets, such as running a live event, with practical steps like monthly business strategy reviews, I'm determined to make 2024 a transformative year. Join me on this journey and share your 2024 goals too! Plus, if you fancy leaving a podcast review on Apple Podcasts or a star rating on Spotify, you'd be helping me kick off one of my goals!

Episode highlights:

  • Reflecting on the achievements of last year's goals,
  • The impact of having a list of goals, emphasising accountability and self-reflection,
  • Building routines, with the intention to develop more structured habits in my daily life,
  • Striving for balance in personal and professional life, with specific goals related to financial and business aspects,
  • The value of interconnected goals, where working towards one, actually helps another goal too!

“So I feel like I've gone from a year of experimentation… and now I want to like, refine that and sort of lay down some patterns using that data."
Emma [10:57]

“I'm sort of getting into that mindset of working three months ahead of myself in terms of what I'm planning to do, so that I can think about plotting out those times I want to take off ahead of time rather than trying to take it off in the moment"
Emma [27:43]

“If I can give anybody any advice in terms of, like I guess, mental health and finding your passions and things like that and like finding yourself, it's find things to be proud of that aren't work."
Emma [46:32]

21 Aug 2024How to "quiet quit" unhelpful consumption and spending patterns00:36:19

In this episode, I explore the idea of "quiet quitting" beyond the workplace and how it applies to our consumption habits. Inspired by a recent newsletter on stepping back from the beauty hamster wheel, can a change in mindset help us break free from the cycle of overconsumption and superficial self-care? I share practical strategies for assessing what genuinely adds value to our lives, like simplifying beauty routines and scrutinising our purchases. From questioning the necessity of trendy beauty treatments to evaluating convenience-driven consumption, I show how adopting a quiet quitting attitude has empowered me to make more intentional choices, and you can too!

Episode highlights:

  • Practical tips on simplifying beauty routines and scrutinising purchases.
  • How convenience-driven consumption impacts spending.
  • Actionable strategies for making better choices about consumption.

“I was able to identify that the thing compelling me to pay for that, or to consider getting that treatment, was because I felt pressure that everybody else was."
Emma [12:26]

“All of these things are priming us to become these convenience seeking consumers like it doesn't serve us."
Emma [20:08]

“Is this really expressing myself? …Can I really see beyond this one decision and really can I really make sense of what I'm actually trying to do with this consumption decision."
Emma [25:38]

Kira [05:32]

“Perfectionists avoid trying to do something the first time because they’re attempting to navigate that inner critic - that’s so out of control."
Kira [24:25]

“Co-working spaces have been really good for me—being around people who are also self-employed—because otherwise it’s so isolating, and you do feel like you’re wrong."
Emma [42:12]

25 Mar 2024Soho house and designer bags: the comments section with E & V00:37:51

This episode was recorded on the lands of the Boonwurrung People of the Kulin Nation. This land was never ceded, it always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.

The Comment Section is back for another juicy ep! This week we’re talking luxury money sh*t, and the link between consumerism and self-perception. With Soho House's expansion into Sydney, we dissected the allure and exclusivity surrounding the global members' club, and its lavish amenities and strict membership criteria.

We also compared our experience in purchasing a designer bag and explored the complex dynamics of prestige and personal expression tied to these luxury items. Beyond bags, we look at the broader questions surrounding luxury purchases, and their true value, both monetarily and emotionally.

Join us as we unravel the complexities of luxury living, membership culture, and the quest for belonging in an ever-evolving society.

28 Nov 2024Why are manicures so good but so bad + are vitamins a scam? The Comments Section with E & V00:38:53

Welcome back to The Comments Section! Emma and Victoria are dishing out another snack platter of chaos, starting with the glittering promises of the vitamin industry. From “energy boosters” to “skin saviors,” we’re pulling apart the marketing fluff and sharing our real experiences (spoiler: we’re still waiting for that miracle transformation). Are these pricey pills worth it, or is your fantasy self buying into the hype? Then we switch gears to the manicure paradox - the love-hate cycle of salon nails. DIY gel kits, builder gels, and pro shaping skills - what’s really worth your time, energy, and coin? Plus, we talk about finding a balance between aesthetics and practicality, whether it’s sticking with simple staples or treating yourself to the occasional indulgence.

Grab your Sicilian olives and settle in for a zesty chat!

06 Nov 2024The psychology of financial freedom, with Laura Ann Moore00:45:30

In this episode, your ears are being blessed once again by Laura Ann Moore, the UK-based financial wellbeing coach, educator and your money bestie. Laura shares her approach to transforming our relationships with money and building wealth while staying true to our values. We explore how financial security and freedom look different for everyone - and why it’s essential to define what it means personally before working toward it. From practical budgeting strategies to reframing spending habits, Laura discusses the mindset shifts needed to make intentional choices with money that align with a fulfilling life.

Episode highlights:

  • Shifting focus from chasing income to defining your version of financial freedom

  • How category limits shape our spending habits

  • Practical strategies to avoid extreme saving or spending

“Feeling good about money means something different to everyone… The work around feeling good about money is knowing what it means to you, and you can only do that by exploring money on a deeper level than just numbers and spreadsheets."
Laura [04:46]

“To one person, freedom is digital nomads travelling the world, going to a new place every year, every month, every week, whatever. To the next person, freedom means staying at home with the kids and leaving their 9 to 5."
Emma [07:34]

“It all just comes down to reframing how you view spending, investing, saving and just money in general and what each of those things mean."
Laura [23:18]

“When you actually look at handing over real money for those things, it can actually highlight when what you want is actually not that thing."
Emma [32:09]

06 Mar 2024Financial red flags in a relationship, with Respect Victoria00:43:46

Content warning: This episode discusses topics of family violence and financial abuse.

In this episode, I talk with Serina McDuff, the acting CEO of Respect Victoria, shedding light on recognising early signs of financial abuse in relationships. Our conversation explores the need for open dialogue about finances, challenging societal norms, and fostering communication to create safe and consensual financial dynamics. These conversations can be with your own partner, family members and friends, and they are so essential. Serina emphasises that financial abuse can affect anyone, regardless of financial stability, and the importance of being proactive in understanding and addressing these issues. Throughout our discussion, Serina also provides valuable insights into creating consensual and safe financial arrangements within relationships.

Episode highlights:

  • Financial abuse is recognised as a form of family violence where one person in a relationship exercises control over another person through financial means. This can include monitoring spending, controlling funds, pressuring to take loans, and more.
  • We discuss common red flags in relationships that may indicate financial abuse, such as isolation, control over finances, pressure to quit a job, gambling with shared money, and exclusion from financial decisions.
  • The importance of having early conversations about finances in a relationship, and normalising discussions about money can help prevent financial abuse by allowing partners to openly communicate their expectations and goals.

“The broader societal expectations and sort of traditional gender roles that many of us have grown up with and many that continue to be entrenched today that can be the context for family violence."
Serina [09:57]

“It's totally okay to have a joint bank account, you know, but at the same time we would say, hang on to a bank account of your own."
Serina [24:45]

“You might have different views and you might sort of disagree, but you should be able to kind of navigate that the way that we do in healthy relationships where you agree to disagree or you don't feel unsafe in those conversations, you're just trying to work out what you should do as a couple."
Serina [28:09]

I hired a stylist and I'm taking you on a deep dive into what my experience was like, what happened when we went shopping, and the things I learned about my consumption habits.

I recorded this episode just hours after I completed my personal shopping session to give you the real raw insights into what it was like as a curvy, jiggly gal trying on endless items of clothing in the space of 4 hours.

Highlights:

  • The relationship between consuming clothes and how I feel about my body
  • The ways I'd previously have bought things and how having a stylist changed that for me
  • Observations on how we view having "enough" clothes
  • How we approach tapering our desire to buy more, more, more
  • The experience of trying clothes on for hours on end, and the feeling of finding stuff that really worked
  • The role of a stylist when personal shopping, and the pre-and-post services that I'm engaging.

04 Oct 2023Improve your relationship with money, with Jess Brady01:11:39

Got a long walk or drive planned? Queue up this ep, because it’s a long one! Joined by Jess Brady, I delve into the world of personal finance, shedding light on the psychological aspects that often overshadow the numbers. Jess, is an expert in financial psychology and founder of Green House, a financial literacy program.

We explore two distinct mindsets: financial stragglers and financial strivers. Financial stragglers tend to avoid accountability and justify their financial behaviour, while financial strivers embrace change, set meaningful goals aligned with their values, and learn from their mistakes.

Jess emphasises the importance of deep self-reflection regarding one's relationship with money and suggests asking hard-hitting questions to uncover beliefs and behaviours. She challenges the normalisation of being "bad with money" in society and advocates for a more open and supportive financial community.

Anyone can shift from being a struggler to a striver by embracing personal accountability, seeking support, and aligning their financial goals with their values for a future filled with financial freedom and flourishing.

Episode highlights:

  • The importance of thinking about money in the context of one's entire life rather than just day-to-day finances.
  • The cost of accessing traditional financial advice has been on the rise, making it less accessible to many people.
  • Understanding one's core values and aligning financial goals with those values, without this alignment, financial strategies are less likely to be effective.
  • Mindset, personal accountability, and the willingness to learn and make changes, when it comes to finances.

“I love Conscious cash flows. I don't like the word budget. It feels like dieting, very restrictive, very boring. It doesn't work for me and it certainly doesn't work for many of the people that I've worked with in the past."
Jess [12:15]

“Most people have never learned formally anything about money. You know, it's really been left to the people around us to role model. Some did it exceptionally well, some didn't do it very well. And we can learn from their mistakes, but they role model it in an environment that is exceptionally different to where we're at today."
Jess [17:13]

“People are very passive, and we let that sort of autopilot, as I call it, kind of run the show when we're not really making decisions in any part. We're not really balancing the now and the future."
Emma [20:32]

“I think in any area of our life, if it's important to you and if it's worth whatever's on the other side, to be passive is kind of selling yourself short."
Jess [21:45]

14 Feb 2024Is it time to raise your money standards?00:21:26

Inspired by my friend Peta's podcast episode on setting standards in business (go listen if you're a business owner), today's quickie episode gets you thinking about the standards you're living by with your own personal finances. The habits we engage with create standards that we live by, and interrogating these standards can help us get out of our own way and start living to our full potential.

We explore the standards you might be accepting in your finances, and how you can look at raising your standards to get more out of your money and the way you experience the financial side of life.

Your challenge after this episode is to live your life as normal for one week, and look at the standards you're allowing into your personal finances. Are you making things harder for yourself by choosing immediate enjoyment over longer term goals? Are you kind of addicted to the chaos of starting over every month? Are you so used to having your value dictated by a salary you're not happy with that it's become part of what you accept as standard?

This one will get you thinking.

How to sell yourself an employer, with Tanaz Byramji

Get ready for an info-packed chat with career expert Tanaz Byramji! In this episode, Tanaz dishes out advice all about one of the scarier parts of being an adult - job hunting! We’re discussing how to take a purpose-driven approach to job hunting and application strategies that can help you land your next job!

Tanaz will show you how to boost your application game, and improve your chances of nailing that next interview. From crafting effective resumes and eye-catching cover letters, Tanaz explains how you can tailor each application, utilise storytelling techniques, and showcase the unique value you can bring to a role.

Learn how to develop the confidence to apply for roles, even when you don’t meet 100% of the criteria, and also how to spot when that dream job might not actually be what you want.

Episode Highlights:

  • Understanding your value proposition, identify your skills, experience, and knowledge and demonstrate how they align with the job requirements.
  • Continuously working on your career and developing your skills, by staying open to learning, and seeking opportunities for growth, you can proactively shape your career path.
  • Tailoring resumes and cover letters for each opportunity. By addressing specific requirements and demonstrating alignment with the employer's needs, you can stand out from the competition!

“What’s come out of [the pandemic] is an increased awareness and appreciation, first and foremost of work life balance and flexibility.”
Tanaz [16:21]

“The idea of considering yourself an asset that you need to sell is really confronting. But what is essential to understand is that in the world of work and employment, employees are a product or service, whereas employers are the consumer of that product or service.”
Tanaz [24:36]

“I've been in businesses where the culture hasn't been a good fit, and I think sometimes that can happen if you just kind of zoom through the hiring process… sometimes it can end up being a bad fit”

19 Jul 2023What I've learned in 6 months of not buying clothing00:39:34

I’m 6 months into my wardrobe freeze, and this episode I’m diving deep into the emotions, revelations, and insights that came from redefining my relationship with fashion and consumption. The initial excitement of novelty has worn off, and I’ve realised that the real challenge lies in finding creativity with the items I already have - and there have been moments when I just wanted to buy something new, especially when it comes to special occasions like weddings or birthdays!

A major factor that has kept me going over the last 6 months has been the sense of lightness and mental clarity that comes from not constantly shopping. It's freeing not having to decide whether I should buy something, analyse my budget, or deal with the regret of returning items - don’t underestimate the amount of thought that can go into a clothing purchase!

As I look towards the second half of this 12-month challenge, I've started to focus on what my wardrobe truly needs. It's not just about specific items, but also understanding the fabrics, cuts, and colours that make me feel amazing. I hope this episode leaves you feeling inspired to make more conscious wardrobe choices, and maybe even your own freeze!

Episode highlights:

  • How I’ve worked to stop that ‘scary number’ on my clothes tag limiting my style choices
  • Unpacking fashion FOMO, and finding new outfits from items I already own
  • A peek behind the curtain of the group wardrobe freeze challenge, and the benefits of sharing experiences, struggles and wins in a safe space

“We’re conditioned to feel an emotional connection to the things that we’re buying and we inflate their value so that we can justify that purchase.”

“It’s just been really interesting looking at who I’m buying for… it’s really hard to break the habitual process of buying for someone that you’re not.”

We also discuss what we'd do with the winnings both immediately and in the long term. From paying off debts to investing in the future, we consider the practical steps we'd take right after winning. Plus, we share our dream lotto purchases – from luxurious holidays to buying our dream homes.

From transforming money habits to expanding the financial window, I’m giving you some actionable strategies to take control of your financial narrative. Like with any goal, sometimes there are sacrifices you have to make, and I’m taking you through the importance of strategic sacrifice in achieving financial goals, and how you can make intentional trade-offs that resonate with your personal brand.

27 Mar 2024How to become a hot b*tch with money00:26:00

In this episode, I'm sharing insights into my approach to managing my finances - what I like to call being a "hot b*tch" with money. I break down six key steps to master this mindset with confidence, and a touch of sass. On the fun side, it’s things like crafting a budget that fits your life, not the other way around. On the other hand, it’s tricker things like critically reviewing your spending habits that eventually help you to be more in control and aware of your financial standing. Working these tips into your finances can help you step away from autopilot and into financial empowerment and confidence.

Here's to embracing our inner "hot b*tch" and conquering our financial goals in 2024 and beyond!

Episode highlights:

  • Moving away from autopilot financial habits towards empowerment and self-assurance.
  • Emphasising the value of knowing your financial status at all times to make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary stress or guilt.
  • The importance of having financial goals and working towards them, whether big or small, as a key aspect of financial empowerment.

“A hot b*tch does what she says she's going to do... By setting and keeping promises to yourself and actually following through on them, that is where we become a hot b*tch with money."
Emma [03:49]

“Having a payday routine is the perfect way to do the things that you say you're going to do."
Emma [05:59]

“Treat every aspect of your finances as data... Seeing everything as data neutralises it. It doesn't make it about you and it helps you move forward."
Emma [23:43]

08 Nov 2023Listen to this if you ever feel "behind" in life00:46:23

If you’ve clicked on this episode it’s probably because you’re fighting that nagging feeling that you’re ‘behind’ in life. It's a topic that resonates with all of us, consuming our thoughts more often than we'd like to admit. Featuring voice notes from listeners, sharing their own experiences with this all-too-familiar sensation, and how to navigate the complex feeling of being behind in life.

Feeling behind isn't just about the numbers; it's about the choices we make, the experiences we gather, and the unique circumstances that shape our journey. Together we explore the need to discern the specific triggers that make us feel behind and the underlying emotions driving these perceptions. It’s important to define your own unique path, discover your core values, and find contentment in their distinct journey.

Episode highlights:

    • Learning to differentiate between the societal pressure to conform to certain life milestones and your own personal desires and values,
  • Recognising privilege and how comparing yourself to others who may have had different opportunities can be counterproductive,
  • The importance of self-awareness and personal growth.

“Getting aware is the very first stage, and that might be noting little things down if and when they pop into your mind or getting better at sort of slowing down and noticing when these thoughts and feelings are coming to you."
Emma [11:15]

“Where can you kind of move away from that goal that's been sort of drilled into you is the right thing to do."
Emma [39:11]

“There is no decision, there is no end destination, there is no place you can be in your life where you don't have questions about where you're going next."
Emma [39:35]

“The older you get, stage of life matters so much more. I've got friends that are 25 and I've got friends that are in their forties, but the stage of life is kind of more important than the age."
Emma [42:26]

26 Jul 2023Navigating your thirties, with Emma Wilson00:55:57

This week, I have the pleasure of chatting with Emma Wilson, the 1st and only Turning 30 Coach, about how to embrace this transformative decade without succumbing to societal pressures or being let down by the narratives we tell ourselves.

During our conversation, we delve into common fears and anxieties about approaching 30, especially the struggles women face as they age. Whether it's the pressure to achieve relationship milestones or the looming threat of the 'biological clock,' Emma provides practical strategies to tackle these issues.

Emma debunks the idea that success should be measured by a predetermined checklist or compared to others' achievements. Instead, she encourages crafting our own vision of success by aligning our passions and values. Whether it's in our careers, relationships, or personal pursuits, embracing our individuality is the key to genuine happiness.

Regardless of whether you're approaching your 30s or already navigating through them, this is an episode not to miss!

Episode highlights:

  • Embracing non-traditional career paths and exploring new opportunities
  • How to make informed financial decisions and work towards long-term goals, by critically assessing your wants versus needs.
  • Finding growth and transformation in facing uncomfortable situations.

If you’re thinking “Oh, I don’t know what to do” or “I’m too scared of failing to leave my job”… Just ask yourself; If you knew it would all work out in the end, what would you do next?

Your 30's get to be whatever you want them to be, but it doesn't just happen to you, you can't just sit back and wait. You have to take control.

10 Jan 2024I didn't buy clothes for one year: here's everything I learned01:07:22

It’s the long awaited wardrobe freeze update! In this episode, I’m sharing my reflections on completing a year without buying any clothes. I share the challenges and the wins, diving into what I discovered about myself and my existing wardrobe.

Looking ahead, I’m laying out my game plan for the next year and figuring out how to put into action what I've picked up. This involves tweaking how I approach clothing consumption - thinking about making my own, trying out rentals, and, of course, doing a bit of shopping.

Join me as I continue this journey of mindful consumption, reflecting on the past and stepping into a future where my relationship with clothes is not just about style, but about conscious choices and sustainable practices.

Episode highlights:

Emma [17:48]

“A lot of things will happen during a year. They'll be events that you didn't even know you were going to go to yet. There will be feelings that you have about the way that you look."

This episode is a recast of my annual guided mid year money review that is PERFECT for taking stock of where you're at as we close out the first half of 2024 and look ahead to what's to come. Even if you've heard this 5-step review process episode before, I encourage you to listen again with this year in mind. These things are always different every time we do them!

The goal of this guided mid year money review is to get you to farm the data from the first half of the year and deploy your learnings into the second half of the year. Often we approach goal setting from a best-case-scenario mindset, which can set us up to fail. By anchoring ourselves in the mid point of the year, and using the real data of Jan - June in our finances to inform what's possible for Jul - Dec, we can set goals and intentions with context, and that set us up for success.

26 Feb 2025How to get dopamine from saving instead of spending00:37:48

We all know that dopamine drives our spending, whether it’s impulse shopping, online browsing, or grabbing a little treat just because. That quick hit of excitement can make spending feel effortless, while saving? Not so much. But what if we could flip the script and make saving just as rewarding as swiping our card?

This week, I’m unpacking how to retrain your brain to crave financial wins instead of spending sprees. By understanding the psychology behind our money habits, we can start making small shifts that give us that same dopamine rush, not from spending, but from watching our savings grow.

I'm covering:

  • Why we’re wired to seek dopamine from spending
  • How to make saving feel just as rewarding
  • Simple ways to gamify your savings

If you’ve ever struggled to break the cycle of impulse spending, this one’s for you!

12 Dec 2024The complex case of convenience: to spend or not to spend? The Comments Section with E&V00:28:18

In this episode of The Comments Section, we explore the complexities of convenience and how it influences our spending choices. With the rise of modcons (modern conveniences, yes it's a real term!), we ask when paying for ease really adds value and when it’s just a clever marketing trap. We weigh the cost of time saved against the convenience of tech, gadgets, and delivery services, questioning if they truly solve our problems or create new ones. We also share practical ways to create convenience on our own terms, without the hefty price tag. From rethinking the convenience of certain purchases to offering simple, budget-friendly solutions, we share ideas on how to simplify life without sacrificing quality.

We want to know—what’s your ultimate modcon? Hit us up on socials and let us know!

19 Jun 2024How to make money progress when everything is a mess00:26:53

In this episode, I explore navigating your financial goals while existing in a world of rising costs and stagnant wages. It's crucial to maintain focus and avoid a defeatist mindset. I outline five strategies to help you build financial resilience, as well as a strong mindset.

Developing both mental and financial resilience is essential for handling future challenges. Consistency is key; keep pursuing financial goals despite slow progress. Focus on your personal financial journey, acknowledge fears about economic difficulties, and stay committed to your plans. Your financial situation is unique to you! Don’t let the general narrative dictate how you think and feel about money.

A previous episode ‘How to find your financial chill girl and build financial resilience’ features the three P's of learned optimism - check it out here!

Episode highlights:

  • Honesty: Critically assess your unique financial situation and avoid generalising from the broader economic climate.
  • Behaviour: Avoid reckless spending due to perceived economic hopelessness.
  • Money Psychology: Recognise how past experiences shape current financial beliefs and behaviours.
  • Resilience: Build both mental and financial resilience to better handle future adversities.
  • Consistency: Continue working towards financial goals, even if progress is slow.

“Successful people, and people that have achieved their goals, don't keep hitting pause every time they run into something like a difficulty."
Emma [04:26]

“Shut out the noise, shut out everybody saying everything's like this or everything's like that."
Emma [06:53]

“Think about how your overall money story and your overall beliefs about money might be intersecting with the way that you are behaving and experiencing and feeling about money during the difficult economic climate."
Emma [15:23]

20 May 2024Is success the best revenge? The Comments Section with Emma and Victoria00:34:36

In the final episode of The Comments Section, we dive headfirst into the complex nature of success. We start by exploring our personal definitions of success and how they vary, from simply getting through a tough day to making a long-term impact. We discuss the surprisingly positive power of revenge as a motivator to prove people wrong and achieve our goals. Though ‘revenge’ has negative associations, it can be a very satisfying driver of success, whether it’s in lifestyle, assets, or career, as long as you keep yourself in check.

Emma also flexes her financial psychology muscles, discussing how our comfort zones around money shape our beliefs and behaviours. We touch on revenge consumption, examining how you can align your spending motivations with personal values rather than trying to prove yourself to others. We also reflect on when it’s time to pump the brakes on your revenge/success journey, emphasising the importance of regular check-ins to see your progress and setting firm milestones to properly celebrate your achievements.

02 Sep 2024Is it unfeminist to discuss women's spending habits? SPENDTEMBER with Emma & Victoria00:43:09

In the final episode of The Comments Section Season Two, we’re digging through the dirty laundry pile that is the intersection of feminism and spending habits, and whether it is unfeminist to critique women's spending habits. Historically, financial media has framed men's spending around wealth-building and investment, while women's spending has often been associated with saving and cutting back. This dichotomy raises the question: is it wrong to scrutinise women's spending when men aren't subjected to the same narrative?

Telling women to ignore their spending habits and simply "build wealth" without addressing the deeper societal pressures misses the point. While it’s crucial to acknowledge that the pressure to maintain a certain appearance or lifestyle is heavily marketed to us, we also discuss the importance of engaging with our financial behaviours. It’s not just about blaming ourselves but rather understanding the structures that shape our financial decisions and taking control to redirect our resources.

21 Jan 2025This is the year you...get serious about saving00:35:35

Welcome back to This is the year...! This week we're exploring ways to make 2025 the year you SLAY your savings once and for all. Saving money is one of the most life changing skills you can learn – and yes, skill is the operative word here. We expect ourselves to know how to save automatically, but for most of us, it's just not that easy. The human brain isn't wired to delay gratification. We've evolved to use the resources we have to avoid losing them, and so saving money (resources) for an undefined reason, to use on an undefined date in the future, isn't something that comes naturally to us. Luckily, there are ways we can hack our brains to make saving fun and easy, and in this episode, I'm going to show you how.

Highlights:

  • Gamifying saving to make it more fun
  • Using a bundle strategy like the $1000 Project
  • Creating momentum to keep yourself saving
  • Building saving into your budget
  • Learning to live below your means naturally
  • Values-based saving
  • Embracing a base camps vs climbs mentality

02 Oct 2024Money lessons from Atomic Habits by James Clear (recast)00:45:31

In today's episode, we're going down memory lane back to one of the early early episodes of the podcast for a book club-style chat about one of my all-time favourite reads, Atomic Habits by James Clear. This was episode ELEVEN of the show so do forgive my under-developed podcasting style in this episode, but it's still an enjoyable listen!
Atomic Habits is about behaviour change in general, but it also contains helpful insights for reshaping how we approach money. Instead of going for that crash diet mindset - cutting everything out for a short-term win - this episode is all about making better financial habits a natural part of your day-to-day life. I break down Clear’s four laws of behaviour change - Make It Obvious, Make It Attractive, Make It Easy, and Make It Satisfying - and share practical ways to apply them to your financial world. Whether you’re looking to save more or spend smarter, this episode is packed with actionable tips and bite-sized wisdom to help you build lasting change. Perfect if you're ready to level up your money mindset!

To kick off season two of The Comments Section, we're diving into the ever-complicated topic of splitting the bill or shared payments. We discuss scenarios where deciding who pays can be tricky, like group dinners, birthday celebrations, and even hen parties. We share personal stories that highlight the awkwardness and the need for strategies when dealing with these situations. We also touch on the dilemma of differing financial boundaries and capacities among friends and how it can complicate group outings. Knowing your friends' financial situations and setting clear expectations can help navigate these awkward moments - whether it's covering a shortfall or ensuring everyone is comfortable with their contributions, understanding and communication are key.

15 Apr 2024The self care fallacy – buying "self care" but we're still not cared for: The Comments Section Emma & Victoria00:37:10

Take a deep breath in… and out… ok now you’re ready for this week's comments section! We’re diving into the real deal of self-care beyond the pretty pictures on social media. We’re talking about how we really make self-care work in our daily lives - from nifty apps that keep us zen to those little life hacks. But hang on, we’re also getting real about how self-care’s become a bit of a shopping spree. Are we actually nurturing ourselves or just splashing cash to feel good? We’re peeling back the layers on what self-care means and spotting the difference between quick fixes and the real thing that gives us a deeper kind of chill.

And, because we love getting into the nitty-gritty, we’re asking the tough questions about why we resort to these self-care 'buys'. Is it genuinely soothing us or just patching up bigger issues? From psychological insights on why we shop when we're down, to simple truths like, maybe we need to treat ourselves like a toddler to figure out what we really need, this episode is your call to rethink self-care. Don’t forget, we want to hear from you too! Drop into our socials and share how you’re keeping it real with self-care.

22 May 2024Are "spending runways" draining your money?00:34:32

In this episode, I introduce the concept of a "spending runway," a term I coined to describe how certain situations and emotions can lead us to spend more money as momentum builds. These runways exist everywhere, from airport shopping and home styling to event planning and beyond. For instance, an initial purchase at an airport can lead to a cascade of spending on food, magazines, and souvenirs. Similarly, starting a home renovation project can trigger a series of additional purchases as you strive for the perfect look. By recognising these spending runways, we can become more mindful of our financial decisions and intercept unnecessary expenses before they spiral out of control. I share practical tips (that I've actually tried!) to help you identify these patterns in your own life, so you can take control of your spending habits. Tune in to discover how understanding your spending runways can lead to more intentional and satisfying financial choices.

On another note, my wardrobe challenge has entered a new era… Introducing The Wardrobe Project. Find out more and register here:

https://thebrokegeneration.com/the-wardrobe-project-challenge/

Episode highlights:

  • Discussion on how social settings, like attending events or gatherings, can create spending runways due to peer pressure or the desire to fit in.
  • Insights into how retailers design environments to create spending runways, such as strategic product placements and promotions..
  • Introduction of specific budgeting techniques to counteract spending runways, such as setting spending limits and using cash instead of cards.

“The airport is a really great example of an environment that creates a spending runway, not only when we're at the airport does money feel like Monopoly money like it doesn't count. We're also in the mindset of we're on holiday, we're on vacation, we can do whatever we want. This doesn't count..."
Emma [10:50]

“You go in for one thing, which in this instance is fairly rational. Maybe you don't need the sandals, maybe you do. It's neither here nor there, but that purchase and that environment and that intention then creates further subsequent purchases."
Emma [13:06]

“We like to buy, but we don't actually like to style. We think that we buy style, but we actually create style with what we've got."
Emma [30:46]

05 Aug 2024How to feel like the hottest sh*t to ever walk the planet pt 2: The Comments Section with E & V00:52:27

In today’s episode, we deliver part 2 on how to feel like the hottest sh!t to ever walk the earth. We kick things off with another juicy icebreaker, exploring how you’d react if a close friend revealed they were secretly wealthy. Shifting focus, we dig into confidence, highlighting the importance of embracing both strengths and weaknesses.

We challenge the notion of toxic confidence, pushing instead for self-awareness and the willingness to acknowledge areas for improvement. We also touch on the power of financial knowledge and the importance of asking questions, even at the risk of seeming uninformed. Maybe it's time for you to interrogate the ways you've been conditioned and understand what has contributed to your responses? Embrace your strengths, acknowledge your weaknesses, and confidently move forward. Thank you so much for listening, everyone!

28 Feb 2024Good With Money Book Launch Special00:29:20

My book, "Good With Money" is finally out! This book goes beyond finances; it's about self-discovery, understanding spending habits, and reshaping your relationship with money.

I’ll guide you through the book's five sections, exploring non-financial narratives and the intricacies of personal psychology in money management, complete with bonus page turning ASMR. I’m also sharing excerpts, with a sneak peek into the themes of financial empowerment and confidence explored in the book.

I hope it becomes your guide to mastering money habits and navigating your unique financial journey. If you do get a copy of the book, snap a picture of it and tag me on your Instagram stories - it’s out in the wild now!

Episode highlights:

  • A bit of real-talk - I have some mixed emotions now that the book is out! The journey from writing to seeing it in bookstores has been overwhelming but exciting.
  • Get a sneak peek into how the media has impacted women's financial empowerment and how social media influences financial decisions.

“I sort of look beyond the everyday habits of getting good with money. That is my sweet spot. That is what I, you know, focus on the most for getting good with money to getting you from Hot Mess Express to feeling financially confident."
Emma [18:56]

“I could not write a book in 2024 that does not address the importance of understanding how to grow your money, how to, you know, go beyond having savings, what to do when you've got all your emergency fund and everything sorted out, growing your money long into the future and looking at that more wealth creation, stability, preservation side of things."
Emma [21:11]

“We're programmed to join the masses to survive, like following the crowd who are running from a predator. If you lose the pack, you die. But now let's think about our financial behaviour. To what extent are we mirroring the norms of others around us, or outsourcing the appropriateness of our financial decisions to what others are doing?"

13 Sep 2023Life lessons and emotionally connecting to the idea of retirement, with Trenna Probert01:01:26

In this episode I’m joined by Trenna Probert, as we tackle the big area of finance a lot of us don’t want to think about - retirement. Trenna is the co-founder of Super Fierce, a platform dedicated to helping people retire with financial security. Trenna is a passionate advocate for financial security, especially for women and minorities. Our discussion revolved around redefining retirement as a positive and integral part of life, challenging the negative narratives surrounding it.

Trenna emphasises the importance of choice in retirement planning, sharing her personal journey of financial challenges and rebuilding. The gender gap in retirement savings was another important topic we explored, dispelling the myth that women are worth less economically. Trina stressed the need for women to prioritise simple steps to improve their financial well-being.

Throughout the episode, we worked to reframe retirement as a positive and achievable goal, highlighting the need to embrace life's unpredictability and learn from our past financial experiences. It’s important to realise that none of us have it all figured out, but with the right mindset and support, we can navigate life's financial challenges and secure a brighter future.

Episode highlights:

  • Reframing retirement as a natural and exciting part of life, with everyone deserves a fulfilling future.
  • Exploring the concept of "failed to fierce," where stumbling or failing is part of life, but it's how we respond and innovate that matters.
  • Trenna shares the power of taking small steps today, and how even minor changes can significantly impact future financial well-being.
  • The gender wealth gap and the need for equity in retirement planning.
  • Check in on your private health cover - if you have it! Think about what could happen in your life, at different stages, that you would need covered.

"This is my life. I'm going to lean into my life. There are always going to be things that you cannot plan for. The only thing that you can control is the way that you respond to it."
Trenna [31:22]

"It's not about the failure. It's not about the stumble. It's what you do in the moment that matters."
Trenna [33:33]

“Looking back is actually really important when it comes to looking forward”

02 Apr 2025Explanations versus excuses00:24:45

In this episode, I dive into the critical difference between explanations and excuses when it comes to our financial situations. I explore how identifying this difference can transform our money mindset, help us take meaningful action, and prevent future regrets. By learning to shift from excuse-making to explanation-seeking, we can break through psychological barriers and create genuine financial progress.

Episode Highlights:

  1. Explanations vs. Excuses: I break down how explanations clarify with facts and context, while excuses shift responsibility and provide psychological comfort that ultimately holds us back.
  2. The Self-Employment Example: I share my personal tendency to use "I'm self-employed, so it's harder" as an excuse, and how transforming this into an explanation creates actionable pathways forward.
  3. Four Questions to Identify Excuses: I provide a framework to determine if you're making excuses or giving explanations, including asking if it's specific, if there's a way forward, if you'll stand by it in five years, and if there's anything you're not telling yourself.
  4. The Future Self Perspective: I discuss how our future selves will thank us for turning excuses into explanations that we can act upon, rather than letting opportunities pass us by.
  5. Life's Regrets: I reference Bronnie Ware's "Top Five Regrets of the Dying" to highlight how excuse-making can lead to unfulfilled dreams and missed opportunities for meaningful connections.

What you will learn:

  • How to differentiate between legitimate explanations and limiting excuses in your financial life
  • Practical techniques to transform your excuses into explanations that enable action
  • Why psychological comfort from excuses can lead to long-term regret
  • How to balance accepting real financial challenges while still moving forward

19 Mar 2025How to like yourself more (and be better with money in the process) PART ONE00:35:52

In this episode I explore the profound connection between self-acceptance and financial wellness. Discover why the journey to liking yourself isn't a simple switch to flip, but rather a transformative process that can revolutionise your relationship with both your self-image and your spending habits. I had SO MUCH TO SAY it's ended up being a two parter, so tune in next Thursday for 4 more ways to like yourself more.

What you'll learn:

  • Why self-acceptance is a gradual journey of neuroplasticity, not an overnight transformation
  • The surprising ways our self-perception drives our financial decisions
  • Practical strategies to break the cycle of "improvement" spending
  • How to begin separating your self-worth from the standards we've been conditioned to meet

Episode Highlights:

  • The Self-Love Switch Myth
Why we've been conditioned to believe self-acceptance is instantaneous rather than a gradual rewiring of our thinking patterns.
  • The Money-Image Connection
Explore the hidden relationship between how we see ourselves and where our money goes—particularly through "enhancement" purchases that promise to make us more acceptable.
  • Breaking the Consumption-Confidence Loop
Learn why stopping certain consumption patterns might actually be more effective than adding new ones when building self-acceptance.
  • The Mirror of Judgment
Discover how our perception of others directly influences our self-criticism and spending habits, and what we can do to break this pattern.
  • Neutrality Before Positivity
My journey of moving from self-hatred to self-neutrality before reaching self-acceptance, and why this middle step is crucial.
  • The True Cost of Self-Criticism
Uncover the financial impact of constantly trying to "fix" yourself through purchases, and what happens when you begin to step away from this pattern

Quotable Moments:

"When you're relying on that externality, that was just a complete sinkhole of spending because there is no end there. It's just a cycle that's going to keep going around."

"If you see it as a project of changing the way you see yourself, rather than just going from disliking yourself to liking yourself, it will feel a lot more manageable."

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week!

20 Dec 2023Year in review: part two00:38:35

Welcome to part two of my Year in Review! In case you missed the first part, it dropped last Thursday, so be sure to give that a listen. Today, we're diving in from July, where I'm sharing the highs and lows of juggling running my own business, writing a book and everything else that life felt like throwing at me! From working to the bone on my book, to dealing with the challenges of maintaining mental health, we're covering it all.

Despite some very heavy challenges, the second half of the year definitely started to come up (thanks Milhouse Mindset!). While in rock-bottom’s basement, my book was eventually becoming more solidified, and my wardrobe challenge gave me an extra boost of positivity.

Reflecting on the year, I'm proud of overcoming challenges and finding a level of financial stability in my second year of full-time self-employment. So, let's jump right into the second instalment of my journey through the year.

Episode highlights:

  • Finding my rhythm with university studies and the rest of my schedule,
  • The importance of scheduling breaks and maintaining boundaries when it comes to rest,
  • The importance of the supportive business community,
  • How the Milhouse Mindset has been helping me in the later half of the year (Check out Episode 115: My game-changing mantra for the last 3 months of 2023).

“By the middle of the year, really started leaning into the really lovely business self-employed community that I kind of cultivated over the last few months."
Emma [07:59]

“Now I can chill a little bit before we hit the ground running in the New Year in terms of like goals and stuff for 2024."
Emma [33:13]

“You sow seeds, and they bloom. I'm hoping that in the new year they can bloom. And I've also, you know, I'm not going in blind, but a bit of a direction for what I want to do in Jan and beyond."

27 Dec 2023End of year guided money reflection00:42:05

In this last episode of The Broke Generation podcast for 2023, we’re diving into the annual Guided Reflection, exploring the highs and lows of our individual financial journey this past year. I’ll walk you through some helpful questions and introduce my LILAC framework (Leave, Improve, Learn, Achieve, Carry) to gain insights into your successes, challenges, and major life events and to help you plan for the upcoming year.

Now armed with this valuable data, it's time for you to sit with it, empowered to plan your next year with intention. It’s time to leave behind what no longer serves you, seek improvement, continue to learning, and set achievable goals.

If this episode has you hungry for more reflection, check out my Reflect & Reset workshop series, you can watch the replay for session one now, and catch the second workshop on the 14th of January. And hey, don't forget about my upcoming book, "Good With Money," available for pre-order, check the links below.

I’ll see you next year!

Episode highlights:

  • Work through my Guided Reflection, a lite version of my Reflect & Reset workshop series,
  • Looking back at major events, experiences, financial ups and downs, and leveraging that reflection for personal growth,
  • Unpacking the LILAC Framework (You know I love a framework!),
  • Bring clarity to your financial situation, understanding personal behaviours, and setting meaningful goals.

“Reflecting is so powerful and I'm going to go out on a limb and say, I actually don't think that you can do the deep work on your money mindset, your money perspective to change your reality without doing a bit of reflection."
Emma [04:35]

“Think about if your year in money were a book or a movie, what would it be called? What would the Shownotes be? What would the reviews be?"
Emma [19:23]

“How do we hold ourselves back? How did other non-financial things perhaps get in the way of our financial progress?"
Emma [22:43]
