08 Dec 2021THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 24 - "The Little Things"00:34:51

An all-time great crime thriller classic? Or a stinky dud that proves studio films should disappear forever? THAT'S IT THAT'S THE ONLY TWO THINGS IT CAN BE THE WORLD IS A STRICTLY BINARY WORLD OF ABSOLUTES. Just kidding! It's neither of those things. But it IS a movie, and it features three very interesting actors. In this episode, Keith and Ev tackle "The Little Things," a new film recently released on HBOMax. They talk about Rami Malek's "sneaky sexuality," they discuss "Leeto vs. Letto," and they debate the structure and the moral of the story, or perhaps, the lack of one.

In this episode, recommended by our viewer and friend Iman Rodney, Keith and Ev check out "Malcolm & Marie," the 2021 Netflix relationship drama that was produced entirely during the pandemic. 23 Dec 2024The Sandlot pt. 2 | Movie Review by The Bluff Council | Ep. 110-200:27:59

KEY TOPICS

 - The "poorly aged" Wendy Peffercorn scene AKA ya'll hate true love
  • The poignant relatability of the ending

  • Ev's major criticism: Why do the moral and climax of the story not more directly include the primary protagonist of the film?

  • The movie definitely takes a hard right into Kid Town in that third act

  • The visual representation of the mythic Beast

  • Smalls hung out with these kids all summer and never learned who Babe Ruth was? Come on...

  • Keith has either a continuity issue or a directing issue with Benny's slide into home

  • Ev hates grownup Benny the Jet, the Dodgers, and maybe Keith

27 Dec 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 69 - Willow00:38:07

The year was 1988. Family adventure films could feature scenes of trolls ripping their own skin off. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE. It's "Willow," Ron Howard's fantasy-adventure film starring Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley-Kilmer, and Jean Marsh! It's the biggest movie of the year. It's the biggest movie of SEVERAL years. It's "Spider-Man: No Way Home," the latest tentpole installment of the MCU. Does it live up to the hype? 07 Mar 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST: Ep. 47 - "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial"00:47:05

In this episode, Keith and Ev discuss "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," the 1982 classic by reasonably talented filmmaker Steven Spielberg. It's one of Ev's favorite movies of all time, but Keith doesn't have quite the same history with it. What makes this film so great? Is it the best "kids movie" of all time? Is this John Williams' best score? How does this hack Spielberg keep making such great films!? Lots of questions to seek the answers to. Per usual, it's really just a waste of everyone's time. TUNE IN. For a "fun" drinking game, try taking a drink every time you hear "magic" or "magical."

28:56 - "Tremors" vs. "Jurassic Park"

06 Dec 2024Road House pt. 2 | The remake is pretty awful | Movie Review by The Bluff Council | Ep. 106-200:23:59

KEY TOPICS

 - The terrible audio mixing/mastering... did this film use AI to fill in actor's voices?
  • Wait so one guy yells "bar fight" and the bar erupts into a full blown riot?
- Fight scenes don't need CGI! Especially bad CGI
  • All the drama: This film's streaming release, Doug Liman's beef, and his open letter - Was it all just a marketing gimmick?

  • Are the streaming companies intentionally trying to kill the movie industry?

12 Jan 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST: Ep. 36 - "Godzilla vs. Kong"00:26:32

In this episode, two titans (Keith and Ev) engage in an epic battle, only to be forced to team up to defeat an EVEN GREATER EVIL: "Godzilla vs. Kong," the new, big, dumb, loud, fun(?) movie available in theaters and on HBOMax. That's right! It's Godzilla fighting King Kong, and this time, it's personal! Or something. 22 Sep 2023THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 95 - Hook00:53:12

For millennials of a certain age, "Hook" is a beloved favorite. It's got stars (Robin Williams! Dustin Hoffman! Julia Roberts!), it's got production value, it's got the beloved Peter Pan IP, and it's got the most famous film director of all time. Only problem is... Spielberg hates it! Most of the stars didn't enjoy it! It was largely savaged by critics and was considered a commercial flop upon its release! How on God's green earth did this film miss!?

Join us in Neverland (the imaginary one, not the real-life horror show one (OK but we do spend a second there, too...)) as we dive into all the good and all the bad of "Hook," Steven Spielberg's 1991 Peter Pan extravaganza.

00:00 - Intro / This movie is bonkers
01:40 - Does every millennial love this movie?
02:42 - What Keith loved about it as a child AKA Bob Hoskins!

10:10 - The editing is weirdly bad throughout
12:00 - Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook is so much fun
13:04 - Why is this movie called "Hook?"
15:10 - Look it was only a matter of time before Michael Jackson came up
16:20 - Ev says Robin Williams is miscast, Keith loses his mind, they scream at each other for 16 minutes. Seriously.
33:12 - Did the characters in the film need to be self-aware of the Pan/Neverland legend?
35:40 - The Lost Boys are too happy-go-lucky and it removes a necessary sense of stakes
37:58 - Ev has always hated Rufio, and according to Keith, the movie does, too
42:44 - What in the @#$% is going on with Tinkerbell in this movie
43:39 - Does Peter Pan possess some sort of power of attraction? Historically? AKA HARRY STYLES SHIRTLESS EVERYONE COME QUICK
46:00 - Let's just be honest: There is a weird sexual undercurrent to a lot of this movie
48:30 - A few nitpicks, including Tinkerbell is a child trafficker
49:40 - Some pirates get egg on their faces, others get murdered by sword: The 3rd act has a menagerie of tones, all right!
50:35 - A couple of The Lost Boys do a great job
51:50 - Shoutout to Charlie Korsmo and "Can't Hardly Wait." "Can't Hardly Wait" RULES.

20 Dec 2020THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST: Ep 10 - "Zodiac"00:38:00

In our tenth episode, Keith and Ev argue about storytelling structure, necessary degrees of closure in documentaries vs. narrative films, and sadly for everyone, the film "Wild Hogs" is referenced at some length. Then they argue some more, and we're told they've continued arguing about this film over the phone since shooting this episode. It's Ev's #5 Favorite Film of All Time: David Fincher's famously under-appreciated "Zodiac."

Lists so far:

Ev 10.) Up In the Air 9.) Guess Who's Coming to Dinner 8.) Birdman 7.) The Lobster 6.) The Royal Tenenbaums 5.) Zodiac

Keith 10.) Up In the Air 9.) Rear Window 8.) Wedding Crashers 7.) (500) Days of Summer 6.) Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

11 Dec 2024American Pie 25 years later pt. 2 | Movie Review by The Bluff Council | Ep. 107-200:27:56

04 Jan 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST: Ep. 35 - "Point Break"00:40:29

"Utah! Get me two!" It's "Point Break," the 1991 action classic that needs no introduction. BUT we're trying to cram a bunch of searchable words into this description, so boy are we going to give it an introduction. Like, a weirdly long and probably pretty awkwardly worded introduction. We'll probably just include random all-caps phrases in the middle of POINT BREAK FILM REVIEW sentences, because that's just what you KEANU REEVES PATRICK SWAYZE have to do. This film (POINT BREAK 1991) was recommended by our friend Jake Shillue, and in this episode Keith and Ev discuss the over-the-top storyline, the beautiful direction of Kathryn Bigelow, Keanu Reeves' "acting," and everything else. There's also SURFING SKYDIVING some discussion of Limp Bizkit, but please don't let that scare you off. This episode is wild. It's crazy. It's sexy. It's action-packed. IT'S JUST LIKE "POINT BREAK."

30 Dec 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 71 - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness00:36:39

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" is not a very good film. Phase 4 has been largely disappointing. Where does everyone's favorite cinematic universe go from here? Did you like this film? Are you happy with Sam Raimi's direction? Do the performances of Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen elevate the convoluted story? Are you excited for America Chavez to become a key player in the MCU? If you answered yes to any of these, congratulations, you're going to hate us. More.

*sigh*

Let's do this.

00:00 - Intro / Where do we even begin? 01:04 - What Ev thought in one minute or less 02:15 - What Keith thought in one minute or less 04:30 - Ev's 3 Keys to the film 05:59 - Keith's 3 Keys to the film 07:00 - Is this the beginning of the end of the MCU? Or the middle of the end...? 08:28 - Is this a kid's movie? 09:39 - The stories in the MCU are going mad 12:07 - Could Kevin Feige be like, just kinda over it? 13:11 - This movie expects you to know a LOT going in 14:50 - Our expectations were high 16:29 - The incredibly disappointing Illuminati 17:50 - Elizabeth Olsen deserves better 20:30 - This film is billed as "Marvel's first horror film." Did they succeed? 22:56 - The Bruce Campbell mustard fight AKA Cinema Is Dead Forever 25:39 - The subpar performances of America Chavez and Wanda's kids 27:13 - Why exactly do people like Sam Raimi's style? 29:50 - There are no stakes, and that leads to some TERRIBLE scenes, for example... 36:13 - The special effects are truly awful 38:07 - The MCU is just the WWE 40:46 - There is no relatable emotion to be found 43:15 - Those stupid f**king memory projector things 45:03 - The "music fight" AKA No Really Cinema is Dead You Guys 47:04 - Probably how a lot of our episodes are going to end from now on

We know you hate us after watching this episode, but you should consider subscribing to our channel, anyways! We'll probably talk about a movie you like in glowing terms, eventually! 28 Mar 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST: Ep. 54 - "The Goods"00:33:05

It's the 2009 raucous comedy that puts the CRIMINAL into "criminally underrated" (at least according to Keith). Coming in at just 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, it's Neal Brennan's "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard." With such an amazing cast of comedic talent, why did this film not find its audience? Why wasn't it a success? Is it because of Jeremy Piven? Is it because they put the tagline in the F**KING TITLE!? The Bluff Council is on the case. We'll sort it out. The original "Road House," released in 1989 and starring Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott, was loud, dumb, and incredibly fun. This new "reimagining" of "Road House," released in 2024 and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, is loud and dumb. Two outta three ain't bad! Right? Right!? Let's talk about the script, the performances, the effects, and also maybe a few good things about this new Amazon product. Oh boy...

KEY TOPICS

 - Intro / TESTOSTERONE 00:48 - What Ev thought
  • What Keith thought

  • Jake Gyllenhaal is good!

  • This movie is all FUN and ENERGY and sometimes that's OK

  • Comparisons to the original "Road House"

  • This film would have been better experienced in a theater

  • Worst script ever? With examples

  • Conor McGregor's performance is... a choice, and Jessica Williams' performance is... bad

In this episode, Keith and Ev get into the Christmas spirit by discussing "True Lies," James Cameron's over-the-top 1994 action-comedy, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Eliza Dushku, and Tia Carrere. It is such a fun movie... Why don't they make movies like this anymore!? Why was Arnold such an amazing star? Has there ever been anyone in any movie as good as Bill Paxton is in THIS movie!? How much time will we spend talking about Jamie Lee Curtis' striptease (TOO MUCH)? All these answers and more on this episode of "The Bluff Council."

09 Jan 2023THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep.79 - Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery00:42:24

It's got a fantastic cast. It's got a good-time vibe. Critics love it. Audiences love it. The only problem? It's not very good. Let's get to the bottom of this mystery, shall we? It's "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, and quite a few other people whose considerable talents are wasted here. Why... why do people love it so much? That's not a trick question. We're genuinely confused. FLUMMOXED, even.

Here we go... 00:00 - Intro / New Rating System? 01:15 - What Keith thought 03:05 - What Ev thought 04:33 - Comparisons with the original "Knives Out" 07:08 - The (overly) comedic tone 08:10 - The never-ending exposition 09:33 - If you use every trope at once, is that... original?* 10:24 - Why the strength of the story is so important in a mystery film AKA It needs to make sense forwards and backwards 14:19 - Making a film funny to avoid being criticized 15:04 - Benoit Blanc is too much of a caricature, leaving no one to ground the film in any sort of reality 17:34 - Is this movie kinda bad on purpose AKA The Glass Onion Theory 20:58 - Talking about Rian Johnson 25:12 - So much to hate about the ending 27:30 - Wasting a talented casts talents with bland characters 28:32 - Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista are at least periodically funny 32:20 - Edward Norton and Ken Norton, Jr. are TOO cool 36:00 - Thank God Ethan Hawke showed up, even if he is the worst security guard of all time 37:35 - This movie does nothing to throw you from your expectations 41:49 - Look, we're sorry, it's been a rough day

29 Jan 2024THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 99 - Crash00:05:09

"Crash" (2004) is famously one of the most polarizing films of all time. It was released to wide acclaim and went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, defeating "Brokeback Mountain" in one of the great upsets in Oscars history. Is it as bad as everyone says it is? Does it deserve all the hate? In this segment of our larger episode on the film, we discuss some of our complaints.

In this (50th!) episode of the Bluff Council, Keith and Ev dissect "The Suicide Squad," James Gunn's hyper-violent and very funny not-a-reboot-or-a-sequel reboot/sequel film featuring the DCEU team of villains. And "dissect" is the appropriate word, considering all the bodily innards this film loves to showcase. Has Warner Bros. finally made a solid 2021 film!? LET'S DO THIS. 20 Apr 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST: Ep. 55 - "Dune"00:43:56

In this episode, Keith and Ev head to Arrakis and learn about the world of "Dune" by watching the highly-anticipated new flick from Denis Villeneuve and starring an all-star ensemble cast, including Timothée Chalamet (or "Chamalet," as Ev seems to think it's pronounced), Zendaya, Oscar Issac, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and more. Expectations were high. Expectations were... not entirely met. *gulp* Fans of "Dune" will probably hate this. As will fans of... you know, most things. Really, if you're even just a fan of valuing your time, you're going to hate this episode. I mean, still WATCH, obviously. Trying to be YouTube stars, son. 02 Dec 2024Was Greta Gerwig snubbed by the Oscars | The Bluff Council debates | Ep.10500:17:53

"Barbie" may be the biggest film story of the year. 1.5 BILLION dollars raked in. Immeasurable cultural impact. So when the director of the film, Greta Gerwig, was not one of the five directors nominated for Best Director at the upcoming 2024 Academy Awards, the streets of the internet were filled with rage. Was Greta Gerwig snubbed? Or were there simply five directors that Academy voters found to be more deserving? Should a film's box office and cultural impact play a larger role in the voting for these nominations? At the end of our recent Oscars Predictions Spectacular episode, we argued about this very subject. Keith thinks Greta should be there. Ev thinks that the Academy got it right. It gets heated. What do YOU think?

28 Dec 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 70 - Top Gun00:45:09

The year was 1986 (we're pretty sure). Tom Cruise was ready to make his mark as a true Hollywood superstar. Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Meg Ryan were all there, too. Even Tim Robbins was like, "What up?" Tom Skerritt and Michael Ironside and James Tolkan are here, too. KILLING it. You get it. People are in this movie. There's a cast. The movie in question? "Top Gun," directed by Tony Scott. We imagine you've heard of it. The movie is HUGE and LOUD and FUN and CLASSIC and GAY(?) and MACHO and AMAZING and so many other things. What makes it so great? What makes it... not so great? Is this action movie even an action movie!? There is SO much to cover. Never fear, The Bluff Council is here, and our egos are writing checks our bodies can't cash. Let's party.

09 Dec 2024American Pie 25 years later pt. 1 | Movie Review by The Bluff Council | Ep. 107-100:21:06

For folks of a certain age, "The Sandlot" is about as good as kids movies get. The 1993 classic was a staple of endless rewatchability and quotability for an entire generation. But what makes it so great? Why was it so timeless? And what, gulp were the... flaws? Join the aged and overweight boys of The Bluff Council as they dive head first into the deep end, even though they can't swim, and fake their own death so the lifeguard has to come give them CPR, which sure gets a little sketchy, but hey they all got married after so LEAVE IT ALONE OK, IT WAS TRUE LOVE. Er... sorry. Join us as we discuss... "The Sandlot."

20 Sep 2023THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 93 - Barbie00:46:47

Come on Barbie, let's go party! You know that movie that EVERYONE is talking about!? The "Barbie" movie written and directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling!? The one where you either love it or you hate it or you're a rotten bigot or a crazed leftist!? Yeah, THAT one! We sit and try to have a normal, nuanced conversation about the film and its pros and cons (there are a lot of both!). Ready for everyone to hate us, universally and equally... LET'S DO IT.

00:00 - Intro / I'M A BARBIE GIRL
00:37 - What Ev thought
02:15 - What Keith thought
04:08 - Who is the target audience for this movie?
06:15 - It's not kids, that's for sure, but that's actually one of the film's strengths
09:33 - By being so thoroughly goofy, this film tries to shield itself from valid criticism
12:42 - The Real World should be actually real; Will Ferrell's scenes rob this movie of any sense of stakes
14:41 - This movie is all telling and no showing. Instead of using a cohesive story and developed characters to introduce its themes, it just yells them at you
21:17 - Does Barbie have a character arch? Does anyone?
22:32 - What's the theme of this movie?
23:46 - Ev loves how weird this movie is
25:00 - Ryan Gosling steals the show and is the only interesting character
26:20 - Wait, Margot Robbie is ugly now...?
27:30 - Casting was good, performances were good, wish we got more of some of the supporting characters
28:52 - Production and set design obviously amazing
30:09 - How exactly does the child/Barbie emotional connection work?
31:19 - Why wouldn't the Mattel CEO want to make money?
32:25 - The writing is quite bad and often quite dated
37:41 - Why do all of the Barbies submit to and fall in love with the patriarchy so quickly?
39:43 - It's hard to discuss this movie because it's more of a message than an actual movie
41:20 - There is no real resolution
44:18 - Ev and Keith weep openly about the loss of romance

  • The character of Dorothy doesn't need to learn the primary lesson of the film

  • Toto is screwed

  • Why does water kill the witch, and why didn't we know that beforehand

  • The behind-the-scenes horrors: toxic makeup, hot lights, and poor Judy Garland 35:28 - The munchkin hanging

  • Margaret Hamilton as the Witch is great, timeless stuff

  • We don't love the Tin Man. Or the Lion. Or the Scarecrow...

  • Intentionally and unintentionally funny moments

  • The music, there's sure a lot of it

22 Dec 2022THE BLUFF COUNCIL PODCAST - Ep. 64 - Wet Hot American Summer00:43:24

When you look "cult classic" up in the dictionary, there's a picture of Elizabeth Banks with her face covered in BBQ sauce, and a picture of Molly Shannon sobbing, surrounded by children, and a picture of Bradley Cooper and Michael Ian Black interlocked in passionate embrace. It's "Wet Hot American Summer," the 2001 over-the-top comedy film from director David Wain. Perhaps predictably, Keith is a big fan. Perhaps predictably, Ev is a bit more lukewarm. Thus, The Bluff Council begins. Join us!
