30 Jul 2020The Screwball Case of ZAZ Parodies with Moxie01:06:27
What makes a screwball comedy? Well, to get technical, screwball comedies began as a sub-genre of romantic comedy in the 1930’s. The term has become a little more broad over time, and movies that we consider to be screwball comedies today might not focus specifically on a love story, but have elements that still turn the classic romance on its head. Come join us as we discuss some famous comedy parodies (specifically of the Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker variety.)   This episode we have a special guest! She hosts the awesome podcast, Your Brain on Facts. Please welcome Moxie LaBouche! We want to thank her for coming up with the topic for the week which is Screwball Comedy Parodies!   Twitter: @blackcasediary Instagram: @blackcasediariespodcast Website: www.blackcasediaries.com

Hey everyone, welcome back to our series on Animation! When we say Exodus, we refer to a lot of people leaving the studio at once, and a lot of people did leave Disney!  You can find show notes and sources on our site: https://www.blackcasediaries.com/ Happy Listening!

04 Feb 2021The Historical Case of The Horror Film: Part 101:01:33
Hey Cassettes! We're starting our Frightening February with part 1 of our Historical Case of The Horror Film! Ever since there has been life, there has been fear. It’s a constant, a truth, something that unites us all. And when humans gathered together to share their fears, those horrors became stories. Eventually, those stories made their way onto film.  Horror is tricky. It’s a genre that many people love or hate--with no in-between. Some people write off many films belonging in the genre as low-budget and lacking in worthwhile stories or development. Others will simply say that they prefer not to be scared, and leave horror unexplored. Although scary movies are popular, they still sit on the fringe of mainstream filmmaking. Horror films rarely win prestigious awards. It’s a genre built for the masses; born in counterculture, and thriving in social deviance.  Join us this week as we take a look at the history of horror cinema, from its birth through the 1940s.  For show notes and sources: https://www.blackcasediaries.com/ Twitter: @blackcasediary Instagram: @blackcasediariespodcast

13 Aug 2020The Muppet Case00:58:22
Hello and thank you for joining us once again at The Black Case Diaries!  Today, we’re taking a look at one of Jim Henson's most well-known and beloved creations: The Muppet Show. The Muppet show aired from 1976 to 1981, five seasons of perfect insanity and uninhibited joy. It followed Kermit, a hapless producer and host of a weekly variety show, and the rest of the Muppets as they put together a live performance with a special guest. The show followed back-stage hi jinks, and even included commentary from Statler and Waldorf, grumpy critics from the upper balcony.  The show became more popular than anyone could have imagined, and the appeal of The Muppets continues today. So, it’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights, it’s time to learn about the muppets on the BCD tonight! 25 Jun 2020The Case of the Top 10 Disney Villain Songs01:05:56
Welcome Back! This week for June Tunes, we decided to have a little fun and rank our top 10 Disney Villain songs!  It’s undeniable that Disney music is an iconic element to the studio’s best animated films. Disney songs have permeated American (and sometimes world) pop culture throughout the last 70 years. Some songs are tender moments between characters while others are show-stopping power ballads that we belt out in our cars. Today, we’re taking a look at some of the most fun and interesting entries in the Disney songbook: The villain songs.  These songs are incredibly important in terms of introducing the audience to the main antagonist, giving us a look into the mind and motivations of a character. A good villain song is fun to listen to and perform, and it brings (sometimes) much-needed depth to these intriguing characters! We’re bringing you a top 10 list of our favorite villainous tunes, with some background and history on each.  Show notes and sources: https://www.blackcasediaries.com/ Twitter: @blackcasediary Instagram: @blackcasediariespodcast

08 May 2023BCD Rewind: The Case of John Williams00:58:48
Hello Cassettes and welcome back to The Black Case Diaries podcast! When we first released this episode we were on week 2 of June Tunes. This is a very special episode. We have covered film concepts and individual movies, but this was our first-ever biography episode!  A while back, we did some episodes about movie scores. We talked about prominent composers and themes we think every movie fan should know. But today we are highlighting one man in particular: John Williams. This man has majorly influenced not just film music, but mainstream American culture for the last 45 years. Even if you don’t know his name, you might know his music. His themes have made you feel inspired, scared, happy, and sad; and they may have even convinced you to believe in magic.  So come jam with us while we talk about the man, the myth, the movie music legend: John Williams! 16 Jan 2020The Case That Never Ends00:49:30
Hey Cassettes! For this week's episode of BCD, we went back to our roots. Almost 7 years ago, we recorded together for the very first time. Back then, we planned on only discussing one movie a week and we didn't plan on focusing on film or TV history. After we recorded the episode, we didn't even edit it. We put it on Soundcloud and that's where it sat for 5 years until we finally decided to do this podcast thing for real. So, we decided to give ourselves a chance to do it over! Today we will talk about the same topic as we did 6 years ago: The Neverending Story (1984) As always, show notes and sources will be on our blog blackcasediaries.wordpress.com or our website https://www.blackcasediaries.com/ Thanks for listening!

Welcome to season 4 of The Black Case Diaries! We decided to return strong with our now annual series on movie music: June Tunes! This month we will be covering various topics all involving music in movies. Today we’re starting with an all-time favorite: The Blues Brothers!  In the summer of 1980, a film that defied description raced into theaters. The Blues Brothers starred two big names from SNL, an all-star list of Rhythm and Blues legends, and one of the biggest budgets in comedy history. Even John Landis, the film’s director, wasn’t sure what genre the film belonged in. Is it a comedy? Musical? Forty years later, one thing is for certain: it’s a cult classic of epic proportions.  Ride along with us as we talk the history of the band, SNL sketch, and the film. 07 Jan 2021The Case of 2nd Chance Sequels01:01:38
Happy New Year, Cassettes! Last year, we started the new year off with an episode about sequels. This year, we’re doing it again, but with a twist! Each of us picked a movie that flopped, bombed, and fizzled out into oblivion after their initial releases. Then, we all thought of the sequels that we would make to “save” those movies; a subsequent film that would give the franchise another chance!  So welcome to 2021, and The Case of 2nd Chance Sequels! 22 Oct 2020The Case That Returns to Oz01:05:58
In the summer of 1985, Walt Disney studios released a sequel to one of Hollywood’s most iconic films. Except--it wasn’t really a sequel. There were some characters with the same names, and it was based on the same source material, but the setting and tone were completely different. The director of this new movie, Walter Murch, called it “dark” and “bleak,” and audiences would agree. Disney itself didn’t know how to market the movie, with a dreaded PG rating that was sure to keep parents from taking their children. Their biggest challenge was to shatter the expectations set by the original film, the brightly-colored musical, “The Wizard of Oz.”  Come join us as we take a look at possibly the darkest and strangest Disney movie: Return to Oz!  Instagram: @blackcasediariespodcast Twitter: @blackcasediary

Welcome back to yet another week about animation! This week, we’re continuing our look at Stop-Motion with a studio that stands on its own as a leader in claymation.  Since its founding in 2005, Laika has been making a name for itself among the animation elite. Though stop-motion is not the most popular or cost-effective form of animation, they continue to stun audiences with their technical mastery with each new film they produce.  Last week we talked about Will Vinton, the father of “Clay-mation.” This week we are picking up with the end of his story and the beginning of Laika. We will touch on each of their five movies, and what we “Laika” about them.  You can find show notes and sources https://www.blackcasediaries.com/ or https://blackcasediaries.wordpress.com/ Thanks for listening!

It's a musical adaptation of the novel Pollyanna and is set in Alabama in 1955.  Here is a link to the film on YouTube if you'd like to give it a watch!!

Happy Anniversary, Cassettes! Two years ago today, we released our first episode about the various versions of “A Christmas Carol.” Things were different back then, in podcasting and in life. Our only goal back then, was to make each episode better than the last. We still strive for that, putting as much work into the show as our schedules will allow. We love podcasting, and we’re incredibly blessed to have listeners like you.  So, we’re closing out the month with an exciting episode about one of the biggest pieces of the Christmas season: Christmas Music! Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir--and Bing Crosby--and Mariah Carey--and literally every artist ever--yes, these are the signs that it’s Christmas! There are thousands of Christmas songs, but every year we tend to hear the same few, covered by different artists. Some of these compositions were written specifically for the screen, and made such an impact on audiences, that they became instant Christmas classics. So today, we are taking a look at the film and TV origins of popular Christmas songs!  Here is a an accompanying playlist for this episode! Show notes and sources here Thanks for listening!

26 Mar 2020Shaun of the Case00:53:13
Love them or hate them, zombie movies have their place in cinematic history. These films featuring the living dead have been around as early as the 1930’s. Not long after that, however, a new genre appeared: The Zombie Comedy.  In 2004, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg utilized the zombie concept and created Shaun of the Dead: a modern Zom-Rom-Com about an uninspired man leading an uneventful life until he’s faced with a zombie apocalypse. Shaun of the Dead became an instant classic, developing its own zombie-like following that has stayed strong for the last 16 years!  So this week come join us at the Winchester where we will have a nice cold pint and discuss how Shaun of the Dead will never blow over.  Check out our sources and show notes at: https://blackcasediaries.wordpress.com/ or https://www.blackcasediaries.com/blog
