S4E1 - Unlocking your creative influence w/ Terry O'Reilly
00:53:12
We're kicking off season 4 with a bang... and a few other well-placed sound effects as we explore creativity with Terry O'Reilly.
With a laundry-list of awards recognizing his extensive career in marketing, as well as his work on the award winning radio program & podcast "Under the Influence", Terry has a deep understanding of what it takes to dedicate a lifetime to the creative process.
His experience extends far beyond marketing, and we'll chat about finding creativity, overcoming creative blocks, starting from the ending, and how creativity loves constraint.
Terry is also a founder of the Apostrophe Podcast Company, a nod to the ever-challenging spelling of his last name. He is an audiophile, an author (check out hisbooks ), a keynote speaker and presenter, a serial-essayist... and lets not forget - a big fan of The Beatles.
"We can all drink Gatorade, but what we sweat is our own"
Terry gave some beautiful nuggets throughout our conversation, and we highly recommend going back to check the entire conversation in the main episode. Here, we'll explore just a few of those ideas and what they mean to us or how we incorporate them into our coaching conversations, and how they show up in our daily lives.
Danaye has found her creative voice through the development of an incredible initiative: recognizing a woman a day from the Calgary area. We'll talk about her shift from creative idea to execution, how creativity has shown up in other areas of her life since, and we even get a chance to talk a bit about music - including a return of fan-favourite, Darren McGuinty.
Danaye had a wonderful insight towards the end of our conversation after we had explored a bit about how she embeds creativity into her daily life. It was a great moment in the conversation, and really got us thinking about our own creative process.
We cover a lot of ground in this conversation, talking about everything from creativity in sport to her time on The Amazing Race, to the founding of the Believe Initiative and what it means to speak to youth (and to corporate audiences too!). Inspiration can come from a lot of places, and sometimes it takes a loss or hitting rock bottom to find it, other times it's driven by the person nipping at your heels...
So, how do you get creative so you can better jump over your own hurdles? Subscribe and tune in to find out.
Sarah talked about the process she and her coaches used to find creative solutions to find that peak performance every athlete looks for. What can you do to help your own process? Well, maybe it's as simple as checking out the framework we discuss from the Creative Education Foundation.
Go take a look, and see how this free framework might help you in your creative problem solving. Check out our episode with Sarah Wells here - > https://link.chtbl.com/tbd_SarahWells
Who knows - maybe you'll also find a way to add a step... to save some time.
In this chat, Jesse gives us insight to how he started his instagram account that's since amassed quite the following. We'll chat a little about creativity in the workplace, and how simply sharing your passion can lead to rewarding - and unexpected - opportunities. Oh, and hockey... we'll talk a bit about hockey too.
In our follow up Coaches' Notes to this episode, we're exploring a couple of thoughts from the show about enabling creativity and putting your creativity on display. We talk about enabling creativity as a leader, and dive into how hard it can be to put out in the world what we create.
We also discuss Dr. Dre's possible unheard Rap-Opera, and make our pitch to take a listen. We're here for you, Dre!
We explore the idea of corporate culture, and how finding the right culture can unlock creativity... and a whole lot of engagement (and fun!) for employees. As a leader in the tech start-up community, Serene isn't your typical leader. She's a driving force behind changing how employers engage with their workforce in Calgary and beyond, and provides a lot of insight into the culture they've created at Pixeltree....
That's pretty impressive for a benevolent overlord....
Get out your brushes, and be ready to spill a little paint as we get into what it takes to create a workplace culture masterpiece.
In the week since, we've spent some time contemplating all the great things she's doing with her team to create #Intentionality. From the creative culture of the team to enabling "Training Day" (apparently not with Denzel Washington, unfortunately).
Corporate culture can be tricky to navigate, and creating something unique and fresh can be a particularly difficult obstacle as organizations struggle to see the true value of giving up time and space to the intangible.
And of course, we ask the question - how do you create intentionality for yourself.... AND for others?
S4 Bonus Episiode: So you want to start a podcast? Creativity meets technology.
00:30:46
Almost every day, Seth and JP are asked about what it takes to launch a podcast.
So, we've created an episode that is meant to answer some of the very basic questions and ideas to get you started. In this episode we cover the simple elements to answer : - What equipment do i need to start a podcast? - What microphone is best for podcasting? - How do i get my podcast onto apple, spotify and other podcasting platforms? - Do i need a Joe Rogan style studio to start my podcast? - How do I edit a podcast? What software do I need to edit my audio? - What about guests?
Of course, we also touch on a few other things like setting up your purpose and vision, which is a critical element before you really get rolling. By the end of this episode, you'll have just enough info to get you started... but if you really want to make a splash, send us a note or comment on our social media that you want more of these episodes, and we'll help get you there.
Looking at creativity through multiple lenses is key to unlocking your full capacity to create, and Genein helps walk us through what it means to truly tap into each of the 7 gems. We'll talk a little about video games, a little about sports, and a lot about finding the best creative version of yourself.
We wonder where these gems are in your life, and what secrets they hold to unlock your creativity...?
In this episode of Coaches' notes, we dive into the idea of oppressed creativity and the untapped creative potential of kids (and how you can rent ours if you really need some creative input! (jk) )
This week in the Dojo, we met up with country music star, fellow Canadian... (and Albertan!, Ryan Lindsay ahead of his show on stage at the Calgary Stampede.
Ryan gives us a sneak peak at the process behind an upcoming track, and how unlocking creativity can sometimes be just a road trip away. Of course, as we've talked about in previous episodes this season - it can be hard to create something and put it out for others. Ryan shares some of his experience, and how that second opinion has him ready to get moving with his next album.
So - where do you go to find your creativity? Is it a car ride? a walk? laser tag? (is that still a thing?)

00:08:58
In this week's Coaches' Notes, we're reflecting on our conversation with Sean Mills. As a serial entrepreneur, PGA member, business strategist, co-founder of FTR Golf and Big Buck Golf -- Sean knows a thing or two about creativity, even if creativity isn't something he considers to be his biggest strength.
We find creativity everywhere, even in our socks, and we'll talk about the role of those trips to Walmart. JP also reflects on his fascination with finding creativity in an industry steeped (and perhaps locked) in tradition.
Throw this one on your earbuds, and sit outside to "recharge" with a little sun, and share your insights on our social pages. Start up or join the conversation: Website | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | Twitter

We were joined by very special guest Neil Hunter, Chief Learning Officer and Partner at Deloitte Canada.
This was an incredible opportunity to tap into the mind of one of the great learning and development gurus today, and Neil brought all kinds of perspective to a short conversation. We dove into the changing cultural landscape and it's impact on learning, how our own rewards system is sometimes motivated to learn for the wrong reasons, and of course -- Neil will teach us how to STRIP.

It's a great conversation with an amazing father, athlete, broadcaster and advocate. So, let's lace 'em up and make this the start of even More Good Days.
Expanding a brand to be nationally recognized is difficult. Josh and the team over at the CEBL are not just pushing forward on the growth of their business, but are trailblazing the growth of their sport across the country.
We'll talk about the mindset it takes to get there, what leadership and growth look like as you exit "start up" phase, and some of the lessons learned along the way.
oh... and don't forget to also check out Season 2, Episode 2 -- the one where we chatted with CFL Hall of Famer, CEO of the CEBL and Josh's boss, Mike Morreale
This incredible event brings together charities from across #YYC to decorate Christmas trees throughout the store.
