30 Nov 2021Episode 083: Gear and Gift Guide To Help Enhance Your Hunt02:00:04

It’s that time of year when we are all thinking about Christmas ideas and what would be nice to add to our gear list to enhance next year’s hunting season. Since 40% of the listeners of this podcast are men, I wanted to get some input from the guys. So I sit down with my husband William Bastian and our friend Jeff Quigley to discuss the hunting gear that we’ve put through the test for ourselves, our dogs, and truck setups that work for each of us. While it only takes a gun, comfy clothes, shoes, and preferably a dog to get out and hunt, we mention items that help make the hunting experience a bit more efficient.

29 Mar 2022Episode 092: Pheasant Fest 2022 - Fun, Friends, and Festivities01:24:16

In this episode I am joined by 4 awesome ladies throughout the country. For different reasons, each of them traveled to Omaha, NE for Pheasant Fest/Quail Classic March 11-13, an annual convention that is often described as the Super Bowl of Upland Hunting. Whether you’re a hunter, landowner, bird dog lover, wild game cooking enthusiast, or wildlife habitat conservationist, there is something for everyone at this event. But what isn’t advertised for this incredible weekend, are the lifelong friendships and connections made when you’re surrounded by likeminded people that share your passion. We sit down and talk about all of those things, in addition to, the people that inspired us throughout the weekend and all those in the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever Organizations that worked so hard to host this incredible event, and all things they’re doing for the birds, wildlife, and habitat.

21 Jul 2021Episode 068: Speaking "Dog", Not Human w/ Sharon Potter01:11:07

Sharon Potter of Red Branch Kennels was mentored by Rick Smith to be a Team Huntsmith Instructor. She trains pointers, retrievers and spaniels, though Chesapeake bay retrievers are her personal breed of choice. She’s known to be a trainer that takes on the problem dogs that most others usually don’t want too mess with, like those that are gun shy and hard mouthed. Sharon shares a lot of great advice in this episode as well as an upcoming training opportunity for a Ladies Bird Dog Workshop.

16 Feb 2022Episode 089: Tips For Rearing Your Own Gamebirds00:46:57

It’s that time of year when many of us are planning out the amount of gamebirds for this dog training and testing season. Unless you raise and keep your own birds, chances are you’re at the mercy of the bird availability of your club or organization. If you have the time and space, rearing chicks on your own is a helpful option. April, a manager at MacFarlane Pheasants, walks us through the advantages of buying eggs vs chicks vs mature birds, as well as basic rearing and husbandy tips.

07 Feb 2023Episode 099: When One Chapter Ends, Another Begins00:15:06

I created this podcast three years ago to find and connect with other women interested in upland hunting and all things bird dogs. I was, and continue to be, eager to learn and be inspired. In this closing episode, I share my gratitude for everyone who has inspired and supported me on this journey. Continue the journey with me and so many others over at HerUpland! HerUpland.com

14 Jul 2021Episode 067: Choosing A Bird Dog Breeder01:05:58

It’s exciting when you’ve finally decided on the ideal bird dog breed for your lifestyle and family. But be patient, waiting months or even years for the right breeder can save you heartache down the road. Take the time to educate yourself about the importance of health testing, socialization, structure, and field ability. Know that reputable breeders typically have a lengthy waitlist, they have the ability to choose the best homes, not which ones submit the deposit first, they most likely have requirements your dog must meet before it’s allowed to be bred from.. respect that, and seek those breeders that not only produce purebred dogs, but well bred dogs.

16 Nov 2021Episode 081: Grouse Camp? 'Oh Hell No!' w/Lauren Dirkschneider01:00:09

Lauren Dirkschneider is an avid marathon runner that sought out a dog breed to be her running partner. She quickly learned her dog needed more than a run, it needed a job. She found herself on an unexpected path into the uplands. This is one of the most raw and detailed discussions I’ve ever heard from a perspective of a novice learning to hunt. Lauren shares her fears, doubts, and what motivates her to overcome them. These are things many of us have struggled with but don’t talk about often enough.

23 Nov 2021Episode 082: The Promise To Bird Dog w/Katie Willis01:59:53

Katie Willis grew up big game hunting in Montana, then found herself in the wetlands and uplands with the addition of her first bird dog 13 years ago, a German Wirehaired Pointer, affectionately referred to as Bird Dog. BD was there by her side through undergrad and PA school, and during those long nights studying, Katie continued to remind Bird Dog of her promise to take him rooster hunting in North Dakota. A four week trip with a loyal best bird dog and two exuberant puppies, made some unforgettable memories for Katie and her crew.

27 Apr 2021Episode 056: The Urban Uplander w/Melinda Benbow01:24:03

Melinda Benbow, the owner and operator of Urban Uplander Pet Care in Indianapolis, joins us to discuss training bird dogs in the city, and how the force free training approach has worked for her. Melinda also shares her experience as a novice running her English Setter, Suge, in her first AKC Hunt Test. This story is a must listen whether you’re a novice or experienced trainer or handler. I also strongly urge judges, and potential judges of dog events to have a listen to this one, because as the stewards of the sporting events, it’s important to understand how the feedback you give, especially to a novice, can affect them. For many of us, it’s these testing venues that are a bridge to turning us into hunters. So let’s all do what we can to make these training and testing events a welcoming, positive experience.
