EDIT: Oliver is terribly sad to learn that John has passed away. He was a delightful man to chat to, very generous with his time and tremendously supportive. RIP John Challis (1942-2021).

16 Dec 2022 | Michael Chapman 1928-2022 | 00:06:33
Michael Chapman 1928-2022
It is with huge sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Chapman, who whilst serving as Executive Producer was the most important member of The Bill production team for over a decade; instrumental not only in the creation of the series, but also its enormous success in the 1990s.
I’m sure I speak on behalf of all “The Bill” fans worldwide when I say that Michael’s work will be enjoyed, celebrated and appreciated forever. We pass on deepest condolences to Michael’s family, who would like to add the following statement:
"He will be sorely missed by his Labrador dog Biggles, one of a long line of Labradors that were well known at The Bill, in particular Bosun after whom the studios in Merton were renamed, (and of course by his beloved three daughters and five grandchildren)” - Caroline, Ruth & Felicity Chapman
27 Jan 2023 | The Bill Podcast 109: Roland Oliver (Sgt. Joseph Corrie) Part 1 | 00:41:00
SGT. CORRIE IS BACK! The wonderful Roland Oliver has been acting for over five decades and played four different roles in "The Bill" - including an all-too brief run as Sgt. Joseph Corrie (1990-91). In this rare and highly entertaining interview, we get to know Roland as he shares some wonderful anecdotes from his career - including a memorable guest part in "Doctor Who" opposite Tom Baker. As well as some cracking theatrical tales, Roland also tells us about his Grandad - who was a real-life Met police officer, walking the beat in the East End! We'll be diving into his time in "The Bill" in detail in Part 2, launching next month - and it's one not to miss!

17 Feb 2023 | The Bill Podcast 110: Roland Oliver (Sgt. Joseph Corrie) Part 2 | 00:41:45
"I had a beginning, a middle and an end..." Roland Oliver reveals exactly what *should* have happened to Sgt. Corrie - including a deleted "end" scene! This is a fascinating glimpse into what seems to have been a pretty disorganised time at "The Bill" in terms of how the contracts of a number of cast members were dealt with. Roland is very honest about his time on the show and career as a whole - though I do my best to give him the credit I feel he deserves.
He also shares some very funny anecdotes about recent roles in "Casualty", "Doctors" and a memorable role in "Skins" - plus it's not every day I interview King Lear! I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing Roland and hope you will enjoy his memories!

03 Feb 2023 | Letter from Helvetica: Fiction Podcast | 00:09:30
Andrew Mackintosh (DS Greig)makes his long-awaited return to acting in a brand new fiction podcast! "Letter from Helvetica" is based on a novel that Andrew wrote in his spare time over a four-year period. In a blinding flash of unadulterated genius – albeit one that took about ten years to gestate – he realised that it would make a splendid podcast. With good fortune, he managed to persuade fellow The Bill alumnus Natalie Roles (DS McAllister) into playing the role of Abigail, and entice Oliver Crocker (The Bill Podcast) into producing it.
Letter from Helvetica is a humorous ‘epistolary’ novel that takes the form of emails exchanged between Abigail Wesley, a talented young botanist from Surrey, and her Uncle John, an acerbic retired Lieutenant Colonel who lives in the not quite real village of Helvetica in Cornwall.
Abigail has been sent by her employer to research, among other things, Kava-Kava root on the ever so slightly made-up island of Burbango, a tiny speck of dormant volcano nestling among the 83 islands that make up the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu. Having tasked her with spending a whole year away from her home, her kindly boss has agreed for her to be accompanied by her husband and three young children.
John Stotter, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, lives in a rambling old house in the tiny village of Helvetica that skulks in the far Western reaches of Cornwall. Uncle to Abigail, the two enjoy a relationship that is considerably closer than that she has ever had with her father. Sharing a similar outlook on life and a similar sense of humour, they resolve to write to each other regularly during her sojourn in the Southern Hemisphere.
Letter from Helvetica is the collected chronicles, tales, musings and canards that constitute their correspondence, introducing us along the way to a veritable mishmash, jumble and salmagundi of diverse characters.
It takes a wry look at the nature of village life and turns on its head some of our preconceptions regarding what is ‘civilised’ and what is ‘primitive’. And it takes a sideways glance at the sometimes peculiar and complex relationships with clothing that different cultures develop, even when clothing offers no discernible benefit.
We have a Crowdfund live on Indiegogo, where there are multiple Bill-related perks to claim - and we are almost at 90% of our target to be able to produce the first series! Find out more and get involved if you can at https://igg.me/at/letterfromhelvetica

24 Mar 2023 | Simon McGoldrick (1984-2023) | 00:42:30
I'm so sorry to be posting this. Simon McGoldrick, friend and sponsor of The Bill Podcast, sadly passed away suddenly last month, aged just 38. Some of you met Simon at The Bill Reunion 7 in November. We recorded a Podcast together in December and I was editing it when I received the news of his passing. I release this with the blessing of his family, as a tribute to Simon. This one's for you mate.
I asked Rebekah, Simon's widow, if there was a justgiving page we could donate to. She explained that they are taking donations for the Winston's Wish charity at his funeral, which is taking place next week. Winston's Wish give hope to grieving children - Simon leaves behind four daughters, one of whom was born just over a month after his passing. New Years Eve is also a time for reflection and to look ahead at new beginnings and Jane's new life in L.A. has brought her some exciting acting work, including playing the lead in the film "Are We Lost" which you'll be hearing all about later in this interview.
So grab some party food, sit back and enjoy this final slice of gold dust for 2023! Our huge thanks also to all of you who have supported The Bill Podcast this year, including our special guests, our Patreon supporters and our sponsors George Fairbrother, Michael Seely and Tony Drury.

09 Aug 2024 | "Taste and Decency: The Swizzlewick Story" from Saturday Morning Press (Sponsor Promo) | 00:01:00
Natalie Roles narrates a promo for this stunning book from our sponsor Michael Seely of Saturday Morning Press:
In 1964, BBC1 launched a new twice weekly serial designed to be something different from the usual soap fare such as their own 'Compact', set in the posh offices of a ladies magazine. Set in a Midlands town (and made by the BBC's Birmingham studio in the days before Pebble Mill), 'Swizzlewick' was designed to be a prime time satirical swipe at local government with larger than life but recognisable characters with huge personality flaws, and hold up a mirror to our faces and see if we recognise ourselves... The serial was created by the talented playwright David Turner, given the writing opportunity of a lifetime and do something bold and original, but even early on, made some within the BBC very nervous.
However, 'Swizzlewick' upset the dignitaries from Town Halls up and down the country, and very quickly attracted the attention of the emerging Clean Up TV movement headed by one Mrs Mary Whitehouse, who quickly suspected she was being lampooned by the writer following a clash with Turner when she launched her campaign in Birmingham three months earlier where his controversial BBC play 'Trevor' was criticised.
Whitehouse was sent the script for an episode she declared 'indecent' to be shown at a time when children were still up, and just in time for her next rally. How the BBC reacted, and David Turner's explosive reaction are explored in this book, as well as the subsequent battle to keep the programme going. The book also investigates Whitehouse's claim that Turner was sending up the nervous collapse of her husband. Was the BBC using Turner to 'get' Whitehouse? Was she correct in that the series was indecent and tasteless? Was Mrs Smallgood and her Morality drive a 'calculated dig' at her campaign - or a stereotype she recognised she fitted...
'Taste and Decency The Swizzlewick Story' tells the story of how the serial was created, its production, launch and initial hostile reception by scandalised Town Hall dignitaries up and down the country. The book also details each of the 26 episodes transmitted, all bar one no longer survives.

16 Aug 2024 | "Lost In Solway" from George Fairbrother (Sponsor Promo) | 00:01:00
Natalie Roles narrates this promo for our friend and sponsor George Fairbrother's latest novel "Lost in Solway"
Solway is a tough industrial city somewhere on England's North Sea coast. The Great Depression laid waste to its proud engineering and shipbuilding heritage, creating poverty on a Dickensian scale, but the onset of World War Two offered the dying city a lifeline; moribund industry was resurrected for the war effort and thousands went back to work.
But now the city faces a new threat, this time from above; docks, factories and military installations are prime targets for German bombers, turning long winter nights into hours of relentless, soul-destroying terror.
Movie-obsessed Sylvia Bullock and easy-going Sidney Williams grew up together in the working-class terraced streets around Old Forge Lane. As young adults, they are now on the frontline, working the late shift on the buses, and facing dangers as real and immediate as many of their friends and family fighting overseas.
One foggy night in the bleak January of 1943, with storm clouds and enemy bombers in the skies above them, life-and-death decisions confront many of Solway’s home front heroes and villains. That night, Sylvia and Sidney are brutally propelled into a strange and incomprehensible world, easily as terrifying and uncertain as the one they had left behind.
"...The tale spans two different centuries, characterized by distinct circumstances. The author vividly describes every scenario and builds all the characters brilliantly. It is a story that every ardent fan of historical fiction will enjoy. You will get as close as you can to a community adapting to times packed with uncertainty and stress due to war; from bomb shelters to nightmares visiting war veterans and black marketeers..." (Online Book Club)
"...This was a great read especially if you could relate to the era and location. The descriptions were spot on. I liked the author’s style and enjoyed reliving the history, albeit it depressing. I purchased the e-book and because it was so good went and purchased the paperback for my library..." (Goodreads)
