The final group game of the World Cup for England and Wales. England needed a draw or a light defeat to progress. Wales needed to win to stand any chance of seeing the knockout rounds

And after a drab first half, England lit up the stage with three great goals from Rashford and Foden to send Wales packing and to see them ease themselves into the next round with a matchup against Senegal

It’s been the news that we, as Bees fans, had feared for month now: the FA have finally reached a verdict on the betting allegations. Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football-related activity for eight months for breaching Football Association betting rules.

The suspension will start with immediate effect, and although he missed the weekend game with West Ham with a hamstring injury, he will certainly miss Brentford’s final two games of the season – at Tottenham on Saturday and at home to Manchester City on the final day.

The ban, if not reduced as part of any appeal, will last until January 16, 2024. Toney has also been fined £50,000 after he admitted to the alleged breaches. He was charged with 262 breaches of FA rule E8 between February 25, 2017, and January 23, 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232.

Toney will not be allowed to train with his Brentford team-mates until September 17.

After their opening day point against Tottenham, Brentford head up river for a second London Derby in a week, this time against the River Rats from Fulham, who got off to a winning start at Everton last weekend. Brentford place played out three 3-2 matches with our local rivals in the past year, both games ended that way in the Premier League last term, a win-a-piece, then the preseason Summer Series game in Philly last month ended with Marco Silva's men claiming a narrow, if largely underserved victory Stateside. Ivan Toney broke his silence about his betting ban from football, and from Brentford, when he appeared as a guest on the popular podcast Diary of a CEO, which is hosted by entrepreneur Steven Bartlett. Toney opened up about growing up in Northampton, his strong bonds with his family, signing for, then being rejected by, Newcastle United, as well as getting his career back on track at Peterborough United and his move to Brentford Football Club, where he has made his name as one of the best strikers in the Premier League.

Ivan talks about the positive, special, environment at Brentford, and it is clear he has enjoyed his time with The Bees – the interview also focuses on his gambling addiction after being charged for 232 breaches of the FA's betting rules, which is where the player struggles to explain his actions or seemingly take responsibility for not being available for half of the 2023/24 Premier League season. There is also no hint of an apology to his club, his team mates or Brentford supporters, who won't see him in action again (unless he moves on) until the end of January 2024.
