26 Mar 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 22 - Johnny Cool (1963)00:57:50

This Saturday we're talking 1963's Johnny Cool and sipping El Heffe pepper infused American Wheat from Banger Brewing in Las Vegas. It's a brutal tale of revenge and overly complicated schemes paired with a straight forward, delicious, peppery and refreshing wheat beer. Plus, two Sammy Davis Jr. songs! Join us.

22 Jul 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 86 - Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987)01:11:43

Episode 86 is a doozy, folks. This Saturday it's Hard Ticket to Hawaii, with Blonde Fatale Belgian Style Blonde Ale kindly provided by the good people of @peacetreebrewing. Director Andy Sidaris was a B-Movie kingpin from the mid 80s to late 90s, with a stock company of actors pulled from Playboy and Penthouse. He also liked guns and ridiculous deaths. We chose what many consider his finest work, Hard Ticket to Hawaii, a picture so relentlessly silly and confusing you can't help but love every minute. Blonde Fatale is a terrific pairing, both for its deliciousness, but also because of the two blonde leads, played by Playmates Dona Speir and Hope Marie Carlton. It's guns, babes, Hawaii and a snake infested with toxins from rats infected with cancer. Yep

15 Apr 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 79 - Deathstalker (1983)00:54:40

Folks, episode 79 comes out this Saturday! 1983s Deathstalker, with Candor Pastry Stout, generously provided by @courtavebrew. Check out Boris Vallejo's cover art. It's so cool. Back in the 80s, pre internet, this was click bait. You saw this at the video rental store and thought, Wow, this must be awesome. Then you rent it, watch it, and that scene never happens. This Conan wannabe built a following, but not for the reasons the filmmakers thought. It's a total hoot, and fun discussion. Candor is a thick Pastry Stout rested on Coconut, Pecan Sandies and cacao nibs. Join us this Saturday, you won't want to miss this one.

The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue, aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, aka Don't Open the Window, with The Dark, from @thirdwindowbrewing. It's a delicious, roasty dark lager generously provided by Third Window in Santa Barbara, paired with a zombie/ecological horror film from 1974.

08 Mar 2024Beer and B Movies: Episode 97- I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle01:10:54
The Beer & B-Movies Podcast returns with 1991's I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle, and four beers generously provided by my good friends at @threeweavers. This British comedy horror picture was picked by guest host Jon, and it's something else. A satanic cult is ambushed by some cross bow toting bikers, and in the ensuing melee a motorcycle is possessed by a vampiric demon. Say no more, I'm in. Three Weavers gave us Goldie lager, Cape Weather altbier, Dark & Jammy sour and Cambodian Cowboy Cambodian coffee inspired stout to pair with this one, and it's all a good time. Thank you for listening, and be sure to leave a review.

25 Nov 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 95 - The Big Combo (1955)00:58:02

Episode 95 wraps up #noirvember. The Big Combo, paired up with Radiant Beauty West Coast IPA, which was given to us by the wonderful people at @greencheekbeer. Joseph Lewis directed this gritty picture, with legendary Cinematographer John Alton providing some classic #filmnoir shots. But is it a pure film noir? That's debatable, and debate we do. The new episode drops this Saturday, so mark your calendars and join us.

28 May 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 57 - The Uninvited (1944)00:55:55

This Saturday, 1944's The Uninvited, with Castle Dangerous from @yorkshiresquarebrewery. A beautifully shot haunted house tale with dark family history thrown in, paired with a rich, deep, dark stout generously provided by Yorkshire Square, out of Torrance, we're going to the shores of Cornwall and a very troubled house. 06 Aug 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 61 - Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)00:57:45

We are back this Saturday with episode 61, 1977's Kingdom of the Spiders, with Tarantula Hill IPA, generously provided by @tarantulahillbrewingco, from Thousand Oaks. Part of the "nature runs amok" sub-genre of the 1970s, spiders up their game after humans have killed most of their natural prey with pesticides. So, they descend on peaceful Verde Valley and start taking down larger animals: like full grown bulls. You can tell by the poster you're in for some epic William Shatner acting. We found one of our most perfect pairings in this tight, delicious IPA from Tarantula Hill.

11 Nov 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 94 - The Shanghai Gesture (1941)00:51:41

We're starting #noirvember with episode 94, The Shanghai Gesture, Josef Von Sternberg's dreamlike tale of revenge from 1941. Known for its fantastic costumes, camerawork and performances, this was Sternberg's last directing job for a decade, until he made Macao (covered in episode 53). What are we pairing it with? East L.A. IPA, a crisp, sharp, pine laden #ipa given to us by the good people of @angryhorsebrewing, out of #montebello

10 Dec 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 70 - Beyond the Time Barrier (1960)00:46:31

Episode 70 blasts off! Beyond the Time Barrier, with Vice Apricot Peach Berliner Weisse @wildbarrelbrewing kindly provided. This 1960 scifi adventure tells the story of a pilot who accidentally finds himself 64 years in the future, to 2024. Earth is a barren wasteland due to nuclear testing that destroyed the protective layer around the planet, allowing cosmic radiation to bombard the surface. Most of the population fled for Mars, and the rest moved underground. We paired it with this tart, fruity, delicious beer from Wild Barrel, out of San Marcos. A good time was had by all.

01 Oct 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 65 - The Dunwich Horror (1970)00:47:21

Our new episode, The Dunwich Horror, with NoHo BoHo Czech Style Pilsner, kindly given to us by North Hollywood's @lawlessbeer drops this Saturday. H.P. Lovecraft's insane story gets the Roger Corman/AIP treatment in this 1970 horror picture that kicks off shOctober. Dean Stockwell is Wilbur Whateley, the shunned weirdo of the shunned Whateley clan of Dunwich. And honestly, he should be shunned. He wants to open a portal to bring "The Old Ones" into our dimension, which ain't gonna be good for us. Wilbur and his twin are the product of an obscene coupling, with Wilbur getting the looks. Sandra Dee, trying to shed her goody goody image, comes along as the object of Wilbur's desire and disturbed plans. It's weird, trippy and freaky, and we paired it with a clean, refreshing, quaffable Pilsner from Lawless. It seems a good pairing, what with the lawlessness of those rascally Whateley's. Join us this Saturday.

27 Aug 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 35 - Vanishing Point (1971)01:11:25

In this episode, we discuss Vanishing Point, with All Gas, No Brakes TIPA, from @reunionbrewery and @wakebrewing. This 70s cult movie stars Barry Newman as Kowalski, a car delivery driver who leads police on a multi-state car chase in a souped up 1970 Dodge Challenger. The beer, provided by ReUnion Brewery, is a delicious, smooth triple that may be the most perfect pairing we've had to date.

20 Aug 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 62 - Alligator (1980)00:48:33

We're doing another "nature run amok" film this Saturday, with episode 62, 1980s Alligator, with Crack That Wit, from @whittierbrewingco. A little girl has a pet alligator that her grump of a father flushes down the toilet. Flash forward 10 years, and that little rascal has been feasting on animals pumped full of weird chemicals from the Slade corporation. And it's over 30 long and angry. Angry. It's up to Det. David Madison to save the day. It's smart, funny, with nice scares. John Sayles penned the story, so you know it's going to be good. We paired it up with a Wit Bier that has an added twist: a bit of ginger. It's another fun episode we had a blast making.

18 Feb 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 75 - Dead & Buried (1981)01:15:14

Folks, episode 75 is a fun one. 1981's Dead and Buried, with Lights Out Black IPA, which our friends at @farfieldbeer in Lawndale gave us. A zombie/Lovecraftian picture set in the fictional Northeast town of Potters Bluff, it stars James Farentino as the local sheriff investigating some mysterious deaths. There's all manner of weirdness in this little town, and director Gary Sherman creates an atmosphere of dread throughout. Special effects legend is set loose to do some really fun stuff, too. Dan O'Bannon is credited with co-writing it, but that's questionable. To go with the dark, bleak story we have an often overlooked style of beer, the black IPA. Be sure to follow us as we build to this Saturday's release.

25 Jun 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 59 - The Undertaker (1988)00:57:55

This Saturday, 1988's The Undertaker, with X-Ray Specs, from @strandbrewingco. Joe Spinell, in his final role, stars as Roscoe, the truly unnerving killer in this lost, never finished film. Roscoe's motives are never really clear, but the body count keeps growing. We paired this with a creamy stout, brewed with coconut and cocoa nibs, that Strand generously provided for the episode. It's a trip, and one we hope you take

13 May 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 81 - Enter the Ninja (1981)00:59:14

Episode 81 is stealthily creeping up on us. This Saturday, we're bringing the 1980s ninja sub genre to the podcast, with 1981s Enter the Ninja, paired up with Mediator Doppelbock, which the good people at @heaterallenbeer were kind enough to provide. Franco Nero stars as Cole, a white dude trained in the arts of the ninja, who helps his friends defend their farm from some bad dudes. Don't let the fact Nero doesn't know martial arts stop you from enjoying this action movie. We let the smooth, caramelly Doppelbock mediate the episode, and leave the shuriken at home.

18 Jun 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 28 - Kansas City Confidential (1952)00:52:39

This Saturday Kansas City Confidential, with Tank 7 Saison, from Boulevard Brewing Company. While not the most famous film noir, this tight, tough, well paced film is one of the most influential. Shady characters, frame jobs, and a clever heist help this classic hum along at a brisk pace. We chose a beer from legendary Kansas City brewery Boulevard both for the location and because the beer is a real good time. Join us Saturday.

23 Mar 2024Episode 98: Prophecy00:54:03

Prophecy, John Frankenheimer's 1979 eco-horror about pollution from a logging company in Maine creating mutant plant and wildlife, and an ornery EPA doctor investigating. There's a giant, lumbering mutant bear named Katahdin causing all sorts of trouble, and unintentional comedy.

I paired it with Czech Dark Dark Lager, provided by the wonderful people at @fielddaybeer. It's a smooth, roasty, easy drinking beer that would go great with a Maine camping trip. Just avoid Katahdin. Join me and guest host Jon for the chat. 🍻

08 Jan 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 47 - New Year’s Evil (1980)01:05:49

Our first episode of the new year drops, New Year's Evil, with Opulence Russian Imperial Stout, kindly provided by @oddmusebrewing. It's New Year's Eve in Los Angeles, 1979, and local DJ Blaze is hosting her biggest show yet. Unfortunately, a psychotic murderer is bent on upstaging the night. There are disguises, punks and New wavers, slasher tropes left and right, and one seriously roasty and tasty stout from Texas.

18 Mar 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 77 - He Walked by Night (1948)00:47:42

This Saturday episode 77 crashes onto the podcast. 1948's He Walked by Night, with Tag Grapefruit Wheat from @lionbridgebrew. Is this a film noir, or a police procedural? We have our opinions about this gritty picture based on a true story. Richard Basehart is a nogoodnik cruising the streets of Los Angeles, burgling and killing, while the police use state of the art methods to track him. Joe Friday himself, Jack Webb, was so inspired by his participation in this one that it led to the creation of Dragnet. We paired it up with Tag, a beer inspired by German Radlers: fruity, sweet, and refreshing. Hang with us through the week, then dig the episode Saturday

14 Nov 2020Beer and B Movies: Episode 12 - The Baron of Arizona (1950)00:42:00

This Saturday we return with "The Baron of Arizona," from 1950, starring Vincent Price. Talk about a long con. Price plays James Reavis, a swindler whose latest scam is to lay claim to the entirety of Arizona. Loosely based on a true story, the real Reavis almost pulled it off! Imagine that, owning a whole state. Who mows the lawn? For this one we put down a growler of The Time is Ripe, a hazy apricot IPA from Three Weavers Brewing Company.

30 Apr 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 55 - Starcrash (1978)00:57:14

Boy, oh boy, do we have a fun one this Saturday. Episode 55, and it's 1978's Starcrash, with Unlikely Couple DIPA, a collaboration from @tortugobrewing and @amarokbrewing. This unabashed ripoff of Star Wars has Caroline Munro, Christopher Plummer, and David Hasselhoff. The beer, generously provided by the fine folks at Tortugo, is a smooth, fruity west coast double that matches up with the silly fun of watching the actors deliver some truly odd lines with straight faces. Christopher Plummer, man, he said yes to this. Join us Saturday.

28 Nov 2020Beer and B Movies: Episode 13 - The Being (1983)00:54:00

Beware of toxic waste, because it will create awful, murderous mutations. That's the lesson from this Saturday's new episode The Being. Part Alien, part Jaws, part It's Alive, part #noir, all B-Movie, this one starts off with a bang and doesn't let up. We didn't let up, either, as we put down several Hop Diggity DIPAs from Mother Earth Brew Company. It's a weird movie and a fun beer, and we invite you to join us for the ride.

02 Oct 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 38 - Vampire Circus (1972)00:52:40

This Saturday shOctober returns, with new episodes every Saturday!

Kicking off the festivities is Hammer's 1972 freak out Vampire Circus. It's got a whole lot going on, including the famous Tiger Woman dance scene. We're pairing it with a flight of beers generously provided by @millstreambrewing. Great movie, great beer, the best month. Join us.

02 Sep 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 63 - The Brain Eaters (1958)00:45:48

We're back in the comforting waters of AIP this Saturday, with episode 63, The Brain Eaters, with Peach Dreams Milkshake IPA from our good friends at @textilebrews. A mysterious cone pops up outside the quiet town of Riverdale, IL, and at the same time animals are turning up dead, citizens go missing, then return acting very strange, and the government sends epic blowhard Walter K. Powers to suss out the doings. It's the Red Scare era, so the subtext of Communist Russia hangs over everything. We paired it with an IPA featuring peach, a touch of vanilla and lactose. It's peaches and cream in a can. Oh, and Leonard Nimoy (misspelled "Nemoy" in the credits) has a small role.

20 Apr 2024Ep. 100: A look back, with Big Chef Barleywine,from Court Avenue Brewing00:24:08
Beer and B-Movies reaches its 100th episode. I'll be covering a number of topics from the first 99 episodes, from favorite movies to forgettable, awful, and dumb movies. But I have to shout out all the breweries that have contributed their products to episodes. And for this one, I have the Big Chef, a barrel aged Barleywine, provided by the great folks at Court Avenue Brewing. Thank you for the support, it's much appreciated.

01 Jan 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 16 - Ghostkeeper (1981)00:56:06

We're mixing it up for the new year, and releasing Ghostkeeper, the little known 1981 Canadian horror film, this Friday. Set on New Year's Eve, this features a trio of folks snowmobiling in the mountains, disrespecting and disregarding the locals and landing themselves in a bad spot. Is there a ghost? Sorta? There certainly is some keeping, though. To go with this film set in sub zero temps, we chose Stock Ale, from Guinness Open Gate Brewery, a blend of Barleywine and Imperial Stout aged in barrels from Bulleit Bourbon. Get a fire in the fireplace, curl up with a beer to fight off the chill and join us this Friday.

01 Jun 2024Beer and B Movies: Episode 103, The Big Heat, with Ruekeller Helles, from The Bruery00:22:13

Episode 103: The Big Heat, with Ruekeller Helles, provided by Placentia's The Bruery. This is one tight, vicious little picture about a good cop pushed to the edge when gangsters blow up his life. Big thanks to The Bruery for giving me their Helles, a light, full flavored beer that pairs great with this intense, fantastic picture starring Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame and Lee Marvin.🍻

29 Oct 2021Beer and B Moives: Episode 42 - Messiah of Evil (1973)00:55:58

ShOctober comes to a creepy end this Saturday with Messiah of Evil, and Picnic Lightning Hazy IPA from @brouwerijwest. Elements of Lovecraft permeate this surreal coastal tale of a woman seeking her father, and finding one of the most unsettling beach communities ever. It's just plain weird, which is just how we like it. Join us as we wrap shOctober up in eerie style.

30 Oct 2020Beer and B Movies: Episode 11 - The Haunted Palace (1963)01:00:32

We finish shOctober this Saturday in grand style, with 1963's "The Haunted Palace." Do you like H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney Jr. and Roger Corman? Well, this movie has all of them. It's a loose adaptation of Lovecraft's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," and is the first cinematic mention of Lovecraft's "Necronomicon," as well as Cthulhu and Yog Sothoth. And what better beer to have with this collaboration than a collaboration between Mikkeller and Anchorage Brewing, Mikkeller "AK Alive," an Alaskan wild ale. It's an interesting beer for an interesting movie. Join us.

21 Jan 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 73 - The Beast with Five Fingers (1946)00:59:40

New episode this Saturday! 1946's eerie psychological horror picture The Beast With Five Fingers, paired up with a flight of three beers from the generous folks at @bhbc. Robert Alda, Andrea King and Peter Lorre star in this one about a piano maestro who dies, and the return of his severed hand for revenge from the grave. Or is it? It keeps you guessing right up until the end. We have a Standard Ale, blonde Ale and Strawberry Daze, a blonde ale with strawberries. It's atmospheric horror from the golden era, so be sure to join us.

15 Oct 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 40 - Phantasm (1979)01:13:49

ShOctober continues this Saturday, with Phantasm, and beers from @dimensionalbeer. This classic from @don_coscarelli is a favorite of ours, and introduces two of horror/scifis classic characters: The Tall Man and the Spheres! It has mutant zombie dwarves, grave robbing, a weird monster fly, Reggie the Ice Cream Man, and a whole lot more. Phantasm is a pedal to the metal interdimensional heart pounding adventure, and it called for four different beers Dimensional Brewing kindly provided.

14 May 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 56 - Wild in the Streets (1968)00:51:20

Wild in the Streets is up next. Episode 56, this Saturday, paired with Confuzzled Wild Ale with Mango, Guava and Pineapple, from @cellador_ales. Max Frost is a powerful, groovy young singer and entrepreneur, with a bold idea. Lower the voting age to 14, make 30 mandatory retirement and ship everyone off to camps to be dosed with LSD at 35. The hippie utopia takes a really bizarre turn in this 1968 counterculture musical, and we paired it up with a bright, flavorful beer kindly provided by Cellador, a wild ale drinkers utopia. Tune in, turn on, and drop out.

09 Oct 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 39 - Black Pit of Dr. M (1959)00:51:31

ShOctober continues this Saturday, with Black Pit of Dr. M, or, Misterios de Ultratumba (translation: Mysteries of the Afterlife). I guess Black Pit of Dr. M sounded spookier. This Mexican horror film has the look of a classic Universal horror movie. It tells the story of the obsessive search for the secrets of the afterlife and vengeance from beyond. It also has elements of Faust and the monkey's paw. With the theme of the afterlife we chose Howl of Cerberus, from @wingwalkerbrewing, a porter infused with cacao and Hatch chilies. If you're unfamiliar with ol' Ceberus, look him up.

05 Mar 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 51 - The Baby (1973)00:56:45

This Saturday, 1973's The Baby, with Adult Nap Time Pecan Porter and Bow Chicka Wow Wow Chocolate Caramel Bock, generously provided by our good friends at @millstreambrewing. An odd film, it concerns a family consisting of a mother, her two daughters and infant son, Baby. Baby, as it happens, is a 21 year old man, and the social worker assigned to the case becomes unwelcomely attached to the family. If the spectacle of watching a family completely at ease with an adult baby doesn't do it for, stick around for the twist ending.

16 Sep 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 90 - The People Who Own the Dark (1976)00:56:49

The People Who Own the Dark, with Tip the Cow Cocoa Espresso Stout from @singlespeedbrewingco. Episode 90s picture starts like it's going to be some Pier Paolo Pasolini picture. Various government agents, scientists and an adventurer and drug smuggler (played by Paul Naschy). They love their pleasures extreme, and use the Marquis de Sade as their guide. The disturbing masks are never fully explained, but there are only like five guests at the drug fueled orgy, so they don't make much sense. Anyhoo, all they want to do is indulge their every desire, no matter how extreme. Spoiler alert: the nukes hit before they can get into it. We get into the delicious Milk Stout the awesome folks at SingleSpeed gave us, that's for sure.

ShOctober barrels ahead this Saturday with 1985's Demons, and Cacao Del Diablo Imperial Mole Stout from @reunionbrewery. This episode we're discussing 1945's My Name is Julia Ross, with Bessie British Brown Ale from @angryferretbrewing. What would you do if you woke up one day and everyone called you by a different name and told you you were someone else? That's what happens to Julia Ross in this twisted Gothic style drama. 29 Oct 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 67 - Blue Sunshine (1978)00:59:45

This week we wrap up October with another horror movie, 1978's weird, freaky Blue Sunshine, with Landlocked Blues Sour, a collaboration from @backpocketbrewing and @morebrewing, which the fine folks at @backpocketdbq were kind enough to provide. People are suddenly losing their hair and freaking out. And by freaking out, they savagely attack and murder other people. After being wrongly accused of murdering three women, Jerry Zipkin goes on the run to prove he's innocent. This leads him to Ed Flemming, who was selling Blue Sunshine acid at Stanford 10 years prior. Ed is also an ascending star in the world of politics. The beer is inspired by the Blue Hawaiian cocktail, with pineapple, orange puree, and toasted coconut, with blue spirulina for the unique color. Saturday is going to be a party, so join us.

11 Dec 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 45 - The Brain (1988)01:04:42

We're mining Canada again for this Saturday's episode, The Brain, with Noise Violation DIPA from @hidefbrewingdtla. A malevolent alien brain seeks world domination by using television to spread its mind control! And the only one who can save us is a jerky teen who likes dumb pranks. It's paired with an incredible DIPA HiDef was generous to provide our podcast. There's a lot to unpack in this weird late 80s romp.

15 Jun 2024Beer and B-Movies Episode 104: Tom Atkins Appreciation, with River to River from SingleSpeed Brewing00:17:07

Episode 104 comes out this Saturday, and it's a special one. I want to celebrate the great B-Movie actor Tom Atkins, and I'm pairing it with River to River German Pilsner, provided by my friends at @singlespeedbrewingco. Tom has had a singularly wonderful career, and had been a big part of my movie viewing life, from The Fog, to Creepshow, Escape From New York, and all time classic Night of the Creeps. And that's just a small slice of his great career. He grew up in the blue collar world of Pittsburgh, PA, the son of a steel worker, and I thought it made sense to pair this one with a solid Pilsner from my blue collar home state. Get your favorite beverage ready and tune in this Saturday. 🍻

24 Aug 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 34 - Slasher Movie Special00:58:52

It's our special episode: Slasher Films, and it's paired with Snuggy Irish Red Ale, generously provided by @textilebrews, in charming Dyersville, Iowa. Suburbs, sororities, camps, even mines, with final girls and vicious villains slashing and stabbing their way through victims, that's what it's all about. We thought a red ale was the perfect pairing with a bloody genre, and this one from the Midwest is perfect. All malty roastiness, sweet and drinkable, it's a good time. Make smart decisions, don't join your partying friends on their trip, stay home, and you still might get got.

"The House That Screamed," a 1969 Spanish horror film, show you don't have to be violent or gory to be scary. It crawls right under your skin and waits there until the disturbing end. While Spanish, it has the vibe of Italian giallo films. Tis the season, so we dive into Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale for this one. Join us.

Something new is going down for the Beer and B-Movies Podcast. This Wednesday we're releasing the first in a series of podcasts dedicated to specific genres/styles of B-Movies, to be released on the last Wednesday of the month. 29 Apr 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 80 - The Curse (1987)01:05:19

This Saturday we're returning to the world of Lovecraft in episode 80, The Curse. Based on the classic story The Colour Out of Space, this picture tells the tale of a struggling family farm that is rocked when a strange object from space lands in a field one night. What at first seems like a godsend quickly turns into a living nightmare. To pair with this, we found Look Into the Air Hazy Pale Ale with Nelson Sauvin hops, which @luabrewing was kind enough to provide. It's a thrilling story that may or may not make a thrilling picture, but we have a great beer.

Billy Jack, episode 71, with The 4 Year Beer, from @foursilosbrewery. Tom Laughlin starred, directed and wrote, along with his wife Delores the story of Billy, a Vietnam vet who retreats back to his desert roots, trying to leave society behind, but drawn to protect a school for troubled youths. Billy's not much for diplomacy, preferring to let his feet do the talking. It's early 70s message movie paired with a crushable session IPA celebrating a four year anniversary from Four Silos, out of Arizona.

04 Feb 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 74 - The Junkman (1982)00:52:55

Episode 74 is headed your way, pedal to the metal. 1982's The Junkman, with a couple beers generously provided by our Midwest friends at @potosibrewingco. H.B. Halicki, the action auteur who never met a car he didn't crash, basically plays himself, and gets hounded all over Central California by assassins in cars and planes. It's thin on plot, but who cares, it's all about crashing cars and fun stunts. Paired with this are two beers: River Rocker Funday IPA and Cave Ale Amber. Dial us in this Saturday for the episode.

27 May 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 82 - Let’s Scare Jessica To Death (1971)00:57:14

Let's Scare Jessica to Death, paired with Bohemian Rapids Czech Pilsner, which the good people at @iowabrewingco gave us. A dreamlike horror tale from 1971, this picture is about a woman, recently hospitalized for an unexplained mental situation, who moves to a country farm with her husband and their friend. They encounter a free spirited hippie who may not be what she pretends to be. He'll, there's a debate whether she's even alive. Bohemian Pils was picked for the somewhat Bohemian lifestyle these folks live, and because it would be an ideal beer for crushing while working on their farm.

This Saturday, episode 68 drops, and it's a fun one. Q: The Winged Serpent, Larry Cohen's 1982 monster picture/police procedural, with Q barrel aged Stout, kindly provided by @ogopogobrewing. There's a monster flying around New York eating folks, and the only person who knows where it lives is a small time crook with less than zero scruples. Michael Moriarty, David Carradine and Richard Roundtree are all in fine form, and so is this Stout, which is aged for 11 months in Woodford Reserve and Heaven Hill barrels. Watch the skies, because Q is out there.

This Saturday, episode 58, The City of the Dead drops, with Weekend Escape West Coast IPA from @smogcitybeer and @topatopabrewingco. A witch is burned at the stake in 1692, and curses the villagers that did it. Flash forward to 1960, and Christopher Lee directs one of his students to Whitewood, Mass to continue her studies. Bummer for her that the village is populated by a coven of Witches. It's eerie, creepy stuff, paired with a light, easy drinking west coast IPA Smog City generously provided.

13 Aug 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 33 - My Bloody Valentine (1981)01:08:24

This week on the podcast: My Bloody Valentine, with Strawberry Rhubarb Wheat from @riverridgebrewing. An overlooked slasher (in our opinion), this Canadian film set in a sleepy mining town tells a bleak tale of cannibalism, insanity, revenge and Moosehead Beer. We paired it up with a bright, fruity, refreshing wheat beer generously provided by River Ridge Brewing, set along the Mississippi River in beautiful Bellevue, Iowa.

29 Jan 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 18 - Alien Dead (1980)00:37:56

Fred Olen Ray's 1980 shoestring budget picture concerns a meteor hitting a houseboat of partiers in a Florida swamp, turning them all into flesh eating zombies! We think. A lot of ins, a lot of outs with this one, but we're pretty sure that's what they were going for. All the gators are gone from the swamp, but people keep going gator hunting! It's a weird, wild picture, and we got a little deep into this week's beer, Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale, from Founders Brewing Co., in order to properly discuss it. Join us.

08 Jul 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 85 - Johnny Guitar (1954)00:54:13

This Saturday it's 1954's Johnny Guitar, with three beers from @bhbc, procured by Jayson's dad. Joan Crawford is Vienna, a tough business woman with some advance knowledge about the railroad, so she sets up a casino in anticipation of cashing in in a year. Only problem is, the local ranchers, lead by Emma Small, don't want her kind around. It's a classic western trope, with one important difference: the main protagonists are women. Sterling Hayden plays the title character, who's definitely a secondary character. There are a lot of ins and a lot of outs here, so it's a good thing we have Barrelhouse's IPA, Mango IPA and Big Sur DIPA to keep our minds limber. Tune in this Saturday for more.

04 Sep 2020Beer and B Movies: Episode 5 - Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)00:45:02

Open the throttle and prepare to be karate chopped because we're throwing down with Russ Meyer's out-there 1965 B-Movie classic - Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! It's tough, independent, buxom women in cool sports cars, versus a creepy old man and his simple minded son in a showdown in the desert. To get our heads right for this insanity, we got after it with Head in the Clouds Juicy DIPA from Santa Monica Brew Works.

05 Feb 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 49 - The Whip Hand (1951)01:12:47

The Whip Hand with Baltic Maple Porter from @enegrenbrewing. This 1951 Cold War thriller has a reporter accidentally stumbling upon a secret Soviet plot to poison the entire United States, from a secret base in rural Wisconsin. We paired it with a delicious Maple Baltic Porter kindly provided by one of our favorite breweries.

13 Feb 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 19 - The Seventh Victim (1943)00:37:05

The Seventh Victim, with Bokrijks Belgian Golden Ale, from Brouwerij Sterkens. A young woman goes in search of her missing sister and uncovers quite possibly the most unthreatening cult of devil worshippers in cinema history. And we drink a delicious Belgian beer from a brewery that's been around since 1651. It's an interesting film that tackles some taboo subjects for that time, and the beer is dynamite. 06 Apr 2024Beer and B Movies Presents: The Evil Dead, With Marshall D's Hefeweizen, from Allerton Brewing Co.00:22:32
Sam Raimi detonated onto the horror scene in 1981 with this grueling, wild picture, starring the man himself, Bruce Campbell. The premise is simple: five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods to "party down," and happen upon the Necronomicon and a tape recorder. They unwittingly call forth all sorts of nastiness, and all hell breaks loose, literally. It's independent filmmaking at its finest. To pair with it, I chose Marshall D's Hefeweizen, which the good people at @allertonbrewing gave me. It's me, the movie and the beer this Saturday.

04 May 2024Episode 101: Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains, with R&D Vintage 2023 from New Glarus Brewing01:01:11

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains, with R&D Vintage 2023, from New Glarus Brewing. Guest host Jane picked this 1982 picture starring Diane Lane as a young woman dealt a series of devastating, life altering blows in a short amount of time. She takes her sister and cousin on the road with a couple bands and creates a movement. There's some great music from punk legends, who also play roles in the film. I paired it with a New Glarus award receiving sour, that is one hell of a good time.

01 Apr 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 78 - Trouble Man (1972)00:57:37

Episode 78 this Saturday, Trouble Man, with Manhattan Beach Hazy IPA, which was kindly provided by our pals at @culturebrewingco_la. Mr. T is a neighborhood fixer. He's cool, smooth, dresses like a champ and takes no crap from nobody. When a couple of gangsters try to set him up, you can imagine how that goes for them. It also rocks a fantastic film score from Marvin Gaye, so you know this one doesn't miss. We paired it up with a local beer teeming with fruity flavor, which only made sense, because Trouble Man takes place all over the Los Angeles area. Culture Brewing really nails it with this hazy IPA. Bring your finest suit and favorite beverage for this on.

16 Apr 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 54 - The Big Clock (1948)01:03:37

New episode alert! The Big Clock, with Royal Eddy Imperial Hazy IPA provided by @biggrovebrewery is out this Saturday. This film noir casts Ray Milland as George, a man running the Crimeways division of Janoth Publications. He's tasked with finding a murderer, and the man suspected of being the murderer? George. His boss, Earl Janoth, played by the incredible Charles Laughton, really wants this guy found before the police find him. Something's up here. Great, tense drama keeps you glued to your seat. And we paired it with a delicious beer Iowa's Big Grove was generous enough to give us. It's an episode you don't want to miss.

02 Apr 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 53 - Macao (1952)00:49:11

This episode, get swept away to an exotic locale with 1952's Macao, with Van Ice American Lager generously provided by @vannuysbeerco and @macleodale. Not even the star power of Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell could make this a hit, but for us it's all about watching these two legends playing it smooth and sexy. The convoluted plot is simply window dressing. We chose an easy drinking lager packed with flavor because it seems like something Mitchum would drink, and just the kind of refreshing beverage one would enjoy in sweltering Macao.

24 Jun 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 84 - The Living Skeleton (1968)01:10:23

The Living Skeleton, comes out this Saturday. This Japanese tokusatsu horror picture is a true mystery to us. Pirates slaughter an entire ship of passengers for gold, only to be hunted down by a ghost three years later. Or is it a ghost? The twin sister of one of the victims might be the killer, but is she even alive? There's a real dreamlike quality to this one that draws you in, and we're thrilled and thankful to the kind folks at @absolutionbrewing for giving us four beers to pair up with this picture: Su-Do Pilsner, Cruisin' South Mexican Lager, 405 IPA and Thiol Dial Thiolized Hazy DIPA. It's a surreal journey into the afterlife, and a crime caper film rolled together.

19 Feb 2022Beer and B Movies: Episode 50 - Kiss Me Deadly (1955)01:16:18

Our 50th episode.

For a special milestone we wanted a special pairing, and we have one with the 1955 noir classic Kiss Me Deadly and Deep Roots Amber from @threeweavers. It's Ralph Meeker as Mickey Spillane's iconic P.I. Mike Hammer, scouring the grimy streets of L.A. for the great 'whatsit.' The beer is from one of Los Angeles's great breweries, a smooth, malty, easy drinking Amber with a ton of flavor. Thank you for joining us on the journey to 50, and cheers to the journey ahead.

02 Sep 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 89 - The Killing (1956)00:57:58

The Killing, Stanley Kubrick's tight, amazing film noir, is paired with beer the great folks at @hopsaintbrewingco gave us. Sterling Hayden plays Johnny Clay, fresh out of a five year stay in prison, and he's planning a new caper. Robbing a horse track of 2 million bucks. This picture set a new standard for crime movies that resonates today. To pair with it, we have four different, and delicious, beers: Happy Pils, Pure Intention Pale Ale, IPA, and Double IPA of Extinction.

22 Aug 2020Beer and B Movies: Episode 4 - Laserblast (1978)00:42:52

25 Dec 2021Beer and B Movies: Episode 46 - Trancers (1984)00:44:15

Our Christmas movie is Trancers, with Zombie Dust from @3floydsbrewing! It's the year 2247, and trooper Jack Deth is sent back to 1985 to prevent the evil Martin Whistler from killing the ancestors of the leaders of the future. Sounds cool, right? Well, it gets better, because Deth is played by the one and only Tim Thomerson. Trancers, squids, Helen Hunt, and Tim Thomerson as a noir style man from the future. We teamed it up with the world class Pale Ale from world class Midwest brewery 3 Floyds. Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays!

19 Aug 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 88 - Escape from New York (1981)00:56:44

Episode 88 is a special one, folks. Escape From New York, with Rye So Dark Black IPA, kindly provided by @naughtypinebrewing. It's 1997, and due to an increase in crime, Manhattan has been walled off and turned into the country's largest prison. The president's plane has been hijacked and crashed into the prison. There's only one man who can get him out: Snake Plissken. This one's bad ass all around. John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, Adrienne Barbeau, Lee Van Cleef, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, Ernest Borgnine. Even Tom Atkins makes an impact in a small role. Frank Doubleday nearly steals the whole picture, though. It's a bleak view of the future, and a land of perpetual night, so a black IPA seemed appropriate.

18 May 2024Ep. 102: Repo Man, with Shivaya Wild Ale, from Cellador Ales00:47:07

Episode 102 drops today, and it's a blast. Repo Man, with Shivaya Dry Hopped wild ale, from @cellador_ales. Emilio Estevez gives one of my favorite performances as Otto, a nihilistic punk in mid 80s Los Angeles, who gets tangled up with salty repo man Bud, played by legend Harry Dean Stanton. Oh, and there's a '64 Chevy Malibu with highly radioactive aliens in the trunk. And one of the best soundtracks ever. All this paired with a peachy, mouth watering wild ale from one of my favorite breweries. Join guest host Jane and me for a damn good time. 🍻

Episode 71 drops this Saturday! 1971's The Blood on Satan's Claw, with a trio of beers provided by our friends at @portbrewing. It's 18th century rural England, and something monstrous has been tilled up in a field. Now, the local children have become a murderous band, collecting bodies and samples of Satan's Skin for their master. To pair with this lighthearted romp, we Wipeout and High Tide, two IPAs, and Mongo double IPA from a fun excursion to San Marcos. Be sure to join us for another trip into folk horror.

10 Jun 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 83 - Beach Party (1963)00:57:48

It's summer, so for episode 83 we're going with 1963s Beach Party, with Suburban Foam Blonde Ale, a unique collaboration between @hermosabrewingco and @descendents. When summer break arrives, Frankie and Dee Dee head to the beach for sun, surfing and, in Frankie's case, a little something more. What they and their friends don't know is Professor Sutwell, an anthropologist, is spying on them. This was not viewed as creepy at all. Hermosa Brewing was kind enough to provide their 5th Anniversary beer, an ideal beach brew that kept us in the zone for discussing this sweet, silly picture. Join us.

09 Dec 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 96 - Black Christmas (1974)01:02:30

In celebration of the season we're covering Bob Clark's 1974 #slasher Black Christmas. Before Halloween, this terrifying picture laid out the blueprint for the modern slasher (if slasher movies are your bag, check out episode 34 of our podcast, a slasher special). A sick, sick individual is prank calling a sorority, and murdering the inhabitants. It's atmospheric, with a bit of dark humor, and some great camerawork.

A Faustian bargain is made, a serial killer is tracked in Wisconsin, and there's even a ghost haunting a church. It's Herschell Gordon Lewis, so it's cheap and weird, but the beer is great! Join us.

This Saturday is episode 87, The Caller, with Double Hopnosis Imperial IPA the good people at @firestonewalker_propagator provided. This Charles Band production sports a cast of two. No extras, nothing, just two people. It's a quirky little picture that's part murder mystery, part scifi. There's nothing quirky about the beer, though, it's straight ahead fruity deliciousness. We have Malcolm Mcdowell knocking on a stranger's door in the middle of the night asking to use the phone, claiming car trouble. Where have we heard that before? Join us Saturday.

This Saturday! 1965's Die, Monster, Die!, with The Fog Knows Your Name Hazy IPA, given to us by Placentia's @junipermorganbrewing. Another adaptation of The Colour Out of Space, this finds Boris Karloff as the loony patriarch of a family cursed by a stone from outer space. The setting is changed from New England to England, and they slip a love interest in there, because that's what they do. The foggy English countryside pairs up wonderfully with this Hazy, fruity beer, as we get into the full October vibe. Set a reminder for our return this Saturday.

1965's dark neo noir Who Killed Teddy Bear, with four tasty beers @prbrewing, from Decorah, IA gave us. Sal Mineo is a disturbed young man peeping and making vulgar phone calls to his coworker. The menace escalates, a lot of topics that were taboo at the time are examined, and the ending is definitely not happy. Fortunately, we have four beers to ease us along: B.T.O. Amber Bock, Plomme Saison, Catchin' a Buzz Kölsch and Upper Iowa Common. Tune in Saturday.

This week we're swinging into swashbuckling territory, with 1954's The Saracen Blade, and Toasted Coconut Porter that @jubeck_brewing generously provided. Episode 69 gives us Ricardo Montalban as Pietro, the swaggering hero, born a common man, who seeks nothing but revenge against those who've wronged him. Director William Castle, known more for gimmicky Sci fi/horror, helms this attempt to cash in on the sweeping epics of the time, and we're pairing it with a sweet, roasty porter that goes down smoothly. We're talking swords, romance and Carolyn Jones.

Vincent Price is Matthew Hopkins, a fanatically righteous and sadistic witch hunter in 17th century England, terrorizing the citizenry with his singular zealotry. 04 Mar 2023Beer and B Movies: Episode 76 - Re-Animator (1985)00:50:53

Stuart Gordon's over the top Lovecraft adaptation Re-Animator, with the delicious Black Lager, which was kindly provided by the friendly folks at @clockhousebrewing. What can we say that hasn't been said about this one. Herbert West is a slightly disturbed young medical student with one goal: bring the dead back from the point of no return. Nothing could possibly go wrong, right? Jeffrey Combs owns this character. He carries a brilliant combination of confidence, arrogance and deeply disturbed psychosis. We paired it up with one of our favorite styled, the black lager. Dark and roasty, and wonderfully drinkable, it teams up great with the black humor woven into this gory, wild picture. Join us
