Welcome to The Baroo, a modern lifestyle podcast for dogs and their people hosted by me, Charlotte Bayne. I have been caring for dogs, my own and those that live with other people, for more than 15 years. Some call me a canine concierge. I specialize in helping my clients make sustainable choices that benefit their pets and their families. In the very first episode of The Baroo podcast I chat with certified professional dog trainer, behavior consultant and author Irith Bloom about something I think most pet parents are familiar with: walking your dog. Did you know 1 in 5 dogs as young as 1 year old are estimated to have osteoarthritis? In this episode I chat with integrative veterinarian Dr. Heather Oxford about how to identify whether your pup is struggling with mobility issues, and discuss some integrative approaches to pain management that can improve their quality of life. Dr. Heather Oxford received her Master's of Public Health in Epidemiology from Emory University in 2000 and worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the Foodborne & Diarrheal Diseases Branch, and also in the Viral and Rickettsial Diseases Branch. She attended the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, where she received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2005. Upon completion of a small animal veterinary internship at California Animal Hospital in 2006, she practiced conventional small animal medicine in Los Angeles for 2 years before becoming certified in acupuncture at the Chi Institute, and rehabilitation medicine at the Canine Rehabilitation Institute in 2008. Dr. Oxford has been integrating Western and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine with Animal Rehabilitation to optimize pets' quality of life for over 13 years.

Taking the Time to Listen with Animal Intuitive Miranda Alcott
Miranda Alcott has been an animal communications counselor for more than forty years. Her workshops and classes aim to facilitate a deeper bond between animals and the humans that care for them. She pioneered the development of new fields and techniques in animal communications , incorporating all life forms and an awareness -based curriculum known as Full body Frequency Perceptivity. As an animal medical intuitive Miranda is recognized as a respected team member while working under the auspices of veterinarians. She is also trained in emergency first aid and CPR for pets, and a certified crisis responder who provided support at both the Columbine school shootings and the World Trade Center on September 11.
We chat about how we can be more mindful around our pets , how we really need to take that moment to tune in and listen, and the lessons we can learn from our animals.

Dogs Have Rich Cognitive and Emotional Lives with Alexis Devine from Bunny the "Talking Dog"
In this episode I am joined by Alexis Devine, the woman behind the viral sensation "Bunny the talking dog". Alexis is the pet parent of Bunny the talking sheepadoodle and Otter the poodle. Inspired by speech-language pathologist Chrisitina Hunger's work with her own dog, Alexis began training her dog Bunny to speak using an augmentative and alternative communication device ( A.A.C) otherwise known as sound buttons. When Bunny was about six months old they joined a study with the comparative cognition lab at UC San Diego, which studies whether or not non-humans are able to express themselves in language-like ways . Much to the delight of millions of followers, Alexis has been documenting her journey with Bunny and Otter on social media all along the way. We talk a little bit about the science behind these buttons, her journey with Bunny and Otter, and some of the lessons she has learned along the way.

A mental health crisis is affecting the veterinary community. According to the American Medical Veterinary Association 1 in 6 veterinarians considers suicide at some point in their career. Risk of death by suicide for male vets is 1.6 times more than for the general population and for female vets 2.4 times more than the general population: 80% of veterinarians are women. The numbers for vet technicians are staggering as well. In this episode I chat with Dr. Taylor Miller of Not One More Vet. Not One More Vet is a non-profit dedicated to providing support, education, and awareness for veterinarians and their technicians. We chat about some of the pressures, realities, and emotional stress of being a veterinarian, as well as the toll the pandemic took on the industry. We also discuss some of the ways we as pet guardians can be more mindful and even a little more prepared for our vet visits.

Hospice and End of Life, with Dr. Nick Labriola of Lap of Love
Jumping into the first episode of 2023 with probably the hardest topic when it comes to pet ownership, and that is hospice care and euthanasia . While I am not certain anything can fully prepare us for the emotional side of pet loss, I think understanding the practical side and the technical side of end of life can hopefully help make it a little less scary. In this episode I chat with Dr. Nick Labriola, DVM of Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice. Lap of Love is a network of veterinarians around the country with the goal of empowering every owner to care for their geriatric pets. Leap Years, A Game-Changing, Anti-Aging Supplement for Dogs
In this episode I talk about Animal Bioscience, a new anti-aging company for pets, originally founded by David Sinclair. David Sinclair is a Professor in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, and one of the world’s leading researchers on aging and age-associated diseases. What We Can Learn From Streeties with Sindhoor Pangal
In this episode I chat with Sindhoor Pangal. Sindhoor is a canine behaviour consultant, a canine myotherapist and an engineer by qualification. She is a TEDx speaker and the author of the book, Dog Knows. Sindhoor quit her corporate life to pursue a career in working with dogs, after her dog Nishi met with an accident and needed special physical and emotional care. She worked as a behaviour and myotherapy consultant for companion dogs, but soon discovered her passion for studying free living dogs in India. Her insights have been published in the IAABC journal and the PPG blog in the US, was presented at the PDTE summit in the UK and was mentioned in the book Canine Confidential by Dr. Marc Bekoff and a National Geographic Bookazine called the Genius of dogs. She is currently pursuing her masters in Anthrozoology from Exeter University (UK) and is also the principal and director of BHARCS. BHARCS offers a UK accredited level 4 diploma on canine behaviour and applied ethology. While she wears many hats, Sindhoor’s favourite role has been being a mommy to two amazing dogs - Nishi (who recently passed away) and Cheeru, who she considers her inspiration and her greatest teachers.
We chat about what her studies of street dogs in India has taught her about canine behavior and how what she has learned can help us to be better pet parents to our own pups. She also touches on the concept and importance of decolonization when it comes to our companion animals.

In this episode I chat eye heath with Veterinary Ophthalmologist Dr. BrIan Marchione. Many may even know there is such a specialty as veterinary ophthalmology, I didn't, until my own dog chance was having a reoccurring issue with his left eye that we couldn’t quite figure out. Not only is there such a thing, but they play an important role in our pups health and wellness. We chat about some common eye issues in dogs and how they can affect dogs of all ages, how you can recognize if its time to seek emergency care for your pup and how we can be more mindful of our dogs overall eye health. Dr. Brian Marchione graduated from UC San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and cell biology in 2001. He attended veterinary school at Colorado State University, graduating in 2007 and went on to complete his internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Advanced Veterinary Care Center. Following completion of his residency in Ophthalmology at Animal Eye Care Centers, Dr. Marchione became board certified in Ophthalmology in 2011. Dr. Marchione served as ophthalmology department head at VCA West Los Angeles for 8 years until recently starting his own mobile ophthalmology practice. Dr. Marchione also serves on the Los Angeles Zoo medical advisory board.

Re-Release: Dogs Have Rich Cognitive and Emotional Lives with Alexis Devine from Bunny the "Talking Dog"
Re-Releasing one of my favorite episodes so far. In this episode I am joined by Alexis Devine, the woman behind the viral sensation "Bunny the talking dog". Alexis is the pet parent of Bunny the talking sheepadoodle and Otter the poodle. Inspired by speech-language pathologist Chrisitina Hunger's work with her own dog, Alexis began training her dog Bunny to speak using an augmentative and alternative communication device ( A.A.C) otherwise known as sound buttons. When Bunny was about six months old they joined a study with the comparative cognition lab at UC San Diego, which studies whether or not non-humans are able to express themselves in language-like ways . Much to the delight of millions of followers, Alexis has been documenting her journey with Bunny and Otter on social media all along the way. We talk a little bit about the science behind these buttons, her journey with Bunny and Otter, and some of the lessons she has learned along the way.

Special Episode: What is Happening in the LA Animal Shelters?
In this special episode I chat with Aleksandra Schiffer, president and founder of the Los Angeles non-profit I Stand with My Pack (https://istandwithmypack.org/). We chat about the animal shelter crisis that is happening in Los Angeles right now. With a record number of dogs — upwards of three times the normal rate — being relinquished, abandoned, and dumped, shelters are at capacity. Some shelters are housing as many as five dogs in kennels made for one, and the euthanasia rate is quickly rising simply because they do not have the space or resources to care for these dogs. We chat about some of the reasons behind this crisis and what really needs to change to help these animals.
