23 Mar 2022A Tribute to Dale Lonis00:22:31

Send us a text

It is with much sadness that we share the passing of past BRP guest and friend of the podcast, Dr. Dale Lonis. We share clips from old episodes with three of his past students, Dr. Darrin Oehlerking, Dr. Jacqueline Dawson and Dr. Jason Caslor, who share a little bit about their time with Dale and the impact he had on them.

We also share Dale’s hilarious bonus episode with you. Dale tells us about when he was the captain of the University of Illinois rugby team and was hit a little too hard. This event also helped Dale see the softer side of the legendary, Dr. Harry Begian, Director of Bands at the University of Illinois.

We encourage you to listen to Dale’s main episode again and think about how you can connect with people in rehearsals and in life for years to come.

About Shelley
Dr. Shelley Axelson is currently the Director of Bands at Radford University in Virginia where she conducts the Wind Ensemble, Campus-Community Band, graduate conducting students, and teaches courses in the music education curriculum.  She was previously an Assistant Professor of Music Education and Assistant Director of Bands at Montclair State University in New Jersey for twelve years where her duties included conducting the Symphonic Band and teaching courses in conducting, instrumental methods, and music education.  She also served as an academic advisor, faculty advisor for Sigma Alpha Iota, and created a Campus Band and Pep Band so students majoring in a subject other than music would have an opportunity to continue their musical education and experiences.

Dr. Axelson earned her undergraduate degree in music education from the University of South Florida, where she studied conducting with Jerry Junkin, Michael Votta, and Mallory Thompson.  She continued her training by earning a Master of Music degree in Conducting at the University of Michigan, where her principal teacher was H. Robert Reynolds.   After graduating from Michigan, she taught at Pasco Middle School in Dade City, Florida (co-author of the Secondary Music Curriculum), and Richardson Junior High in Richardson, Texas.

After earning her Doctorate in Conducting with Mallory Thompson at Northwestern University, Dr. Axelson was appointed Director of Bands at Central College in Pella, Iowa where she was responsible for running all aspects of the band program.  After three years in Iowa, she relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana to become the Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Indianapolis.  In 2009, she joined the faculty of the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University in New Jersey and has been at Radford University since the fall of 2022.

Dr. Axelson is a highly sought-after conductor, clinician, presenter, and adjudicator for professional development events, band festivals, honor bands, and conferences throughout the United States and Canada.  She recently presented at the National Association for Music Education Regional Conference in Atlantic City and the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.

About Sara
Sara Sulyma is a Winnipeg-based music educator, composer, and arranger. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario (BMus ‘16; Dip, Arts Management ‘17; BEd ‘19), Sara has been playing bassoon in wind ensembles and orchestras across her home province of Ontario since 2010. From 2017-19, Sara conducted Western Chamber Music Orchestra, an extra-curricular ensemble at UWO that aims to provide non-music majors with an opportunity to continue creating music at the post-secondary level. Sara currently plays bassoon in Winnipeg Wind Ensemble.

A member of Manitoba Band Association, Ontario Music Educators’ Association, Women Band Directors International, and World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Sara’s passion for lifelong learning and music education have led them to conducting and teaching opportunities across North America and Europe. Sara recently delivered a session titled “So You Want to Talk About Diversity: The Five W’s of Inclusive Wind Band Programming” at the Canadian Band Association forum, “A Time to Share”. Their article “Kaleidoscopic Repertoire: Respectful and Community-Minded Programming in the Band Room” was published in the most recent edition of the Canadian Band Association’s journal Canadian Winds/Vents canadiens.

About Jienan Chen
Jienan Chen (b. 2001) is a largely self-taught composer from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,  Canada. He learned to compose mostly from looking at and listening to the music of other composers, and from playing in wind ensembles from the elementary up to the post-secondary levels. His music seeks to emphasize the structures found in Classical-era music while creating intrigue with harmony, counterpoint, or borrowings from the musical styles from his homeland China.

Jienan has composed music for various solo instruments and ensembles, as well as electronic music. Additionally, he has created several arrangements of Chinese music, in his pursuit to make it more accessible in Canada and to widen the repertoire of world music arrangements in the wind ensemble and orchestral repertoire.

Currently enrolled at the University of Alberta pursuing a major in marketing and a minor in music, Jienan devotes his time outside of classes and composing to various activities, such as writing, gardening, cycling, photography, promoting the use of alto clarinet in wind ensembles, pondering the revival of the harmonium, as well as talking about Chinese history.
