26 Jan 2023Hurricane: Unsung Hero with Rebecca Greenwood Harding00:45:03

The Hawker Hurricane has gone down in popular history as 'not the Spitfire'. But when the Imperial War Museum unveiled their latest exhibition at IWM Duxford, Hurricane: Unsung Hero, the avgeek crowd, myself included, went 'unsung?! Never!'. So how better to discuss the exhibition with than the IWM'sHead of Technical Objects Rebecca Greenwood Harding. Rebecca has a broad remit at IWM, so I was delighted that we were able to spend a Friday with the Hurricanes to discuss making the event happen and also delve into the intricacies of managing the IWM's collection. This left me with much to think about. Please stick around for the end, as I have things to say about how we discuss and interact with the institution we love. There are people involved, they are not just faceless monoliths.

Hurricane: Unsung Hero runs until the 19th February at IWM Duxford. Click here to learn more: https://www.iwm.org.uk/events/Hurricane-unsung-hero

20 Oct 2022Julia Cooke: The Women of Pan Am00:50:46

The 1960s saw the true birth of international air travel. The glamour of the jet set was only matched by the glamour of the flight attendants that cared for them. as they dashed across the globe. At the forefront of this change in air travel were Pan American Airways and their powder blue uniformed stewardesses.

While the hyper-sexualised image of the stewardesses was capitalised upon by the airlines, the women themselves were in no way stereotypes. Joining me today is author Julia Cooke, whose new book Come Fly the World looks at the remarkable period in the late 60s when Pan Am stated: "Stewardesses Wanted. Must Want The World."

27 Oct 2022Chris Henry: Jesse L. Brown, Thomas Hudner Jr. and the Corsair00:53:36

Jesse L. Brown was the US Navy's first African-American Naval Aviator. With his squadron mates, onboard the USS Leyte in VF-32, Jesse and his wingman Thomas Hudner Jr. struck up a remarkable friendship that would lead to the tragic, heroic events of the 4th December 1950. Tom Hudner's actions would earn him the Medal of Honor, and Adam Makos would write their story in his book Devotion, soon to be released as a major motion picture starring Johnathan Majors and Glen Powell.

But at the EAA in Oshkosh, they found that their F4U-4 Corsair had a direct link to Tom Hudner. Joining me today is the museum programs coordinator at EAA, who was part of the team that researched the history of that Corsair that would lead to an incredible unveiling with the Brown and Hudner families.

01 Dec 2022Joe Wilding: The Future of Aviation: Part 1 - Powering the Future00:45:25

Aviation is at a fascinating crossroads. As the production of the 747 ends this year and the production lines have been quiet for quite some time now In their place, we are seeing in a shift in the way we travel by air. Aviation is also very much in the sights of all those who want us to reduce our carbon footprint because it is a very visible sign of carbon emissions.

Joining us today is Joe Wilding who is an aerospace engineer currently working in the fascinating field of electric aircraft. Joe joined me to look at a number of the concepts currently being explored to make aviation more sustainable that could make aviation have a future after all. Our chat looked at a number of different concepts. In part one of this two-parter, we look at the reasons why aviation needs to change and how the different power sources of power we could turn to will have different effects on the aircraft of the future. Be warned, I go on about hydrogen for a bit. It is the future, you know.

08 Dec 2022Joe Wilding: The Future of Aviation: Part 2 - The Shape of the Future00:46:02

As the last Boeing 747 rolls off the assembly line at Everett, the once distinctive shape of the airliners we have known have become the norm. But with the changes in power source we discussed in Part 1 coming into effect, the shape of the aircraft of the future will adapt to make the best use of them. Aerospace engineer Joe Wilding returns to help us look at what the Shape of the Future may be. Oh, and we chat about Nuclear Aircraft too.

16 Mar 2023Magnificent Women and Flying Machines with Sally Smith00:56:12

Women have been involved in flight from the earliest moments, yet they have been relegated to the margins in most of our histories. So it was fantastic to read Sally Smith's book that brings these magnificent women back to our attention.

From women who flew balloons professionally in the 19th century to the Manchester lass who won the most prestigious air race in the country and the first Briton to go to space after hearing a radio advert, women have fought to be seen as equals and have forever excelled in the air.

Sally Smith is a journalist, skydiver and balloonist whose book Magnificent Women and Flying Machines contains a series of biographies of female aviators that demand reading and chatting about. So today, we look at a few of them and I hope you find these women as magnificent as I have.

05 Jan 2023John Lancaster: The Great Air Race00:50:23

In 1919, the forerunner to the United States Air Force, the Air Service, staged an audacious transcontinental air race. While flying coast to coast had never really been done before, the head of the Training and Operations Group, Brigadier-General Billy Mitchell. Decided that making it a round-trip race would be even better than just going one way. So in October 1919, using war surplus aircraft, including British and German single-seat Scouts, the great air race began.

Former Washington Post Foreign Correspondent and pilot John Lancaster has retraced the roots of men like Tooey Spaatz and the 'Flying Parson', Belvin Maynard, back and forth across the United States and his new book. The Great Air Race.

04 May 2023Boneyard Safari with Ramon Purcell00:49:24

Boneyard Safari is one of those outfits I had always followed but never thought I'd get the chance to meet anyone from. Well, the trip to Arizona and the team at The Pima Air and Space Museum changed all that. While I was there, I got to spend time with Ramon Purcell, Boneyard Safari's founder and Director of Photography. If you followed the F-117A Stealth Fighter's move to the Pima Air and Space Museum or B-52H 61-009 "Damage Inc. II"'s 9-day 1,407-mile from Davis Monthan AFB's boneyard to Oklahoma City, you know Ramon's work.

We sat down to discuss how he got into this game, the intricacies of photographing and moving aircraft, and greasing the wheels of locals as a massive aircraft crawled through their town. Our chat was a lot of fun and we have more in the pipeline too.

29 Sep 2022Kenneth Katz: The Supersonic BONE: Part 1 - The Journey to the B-1A00:50:46

Few modern aircraft capture the attention of the hardened AVGeek more than the Rockwell B-1B Lancer bomber. Designed at the crux of the Cold War, the journey to the aircraft that would enter service after those tensions had thawed began in the heady days of the 1950s when higher, faster and further was the order of the day. To get to the B-1B, we have to start with aircraft like the B-70 Valkrie, the F-111 and, of course, the B-1A.

Kenneth P. Katz is an Air Force Veteran and career aerospace engineer, and he joins me to discuss his new book, the lavishly illustrated The Supersonic BONE, and the amazing journey that the US Air Force went through to get their hands on this remarkable aircraft.

In part one, we discuss the genesis of the B-1, its initial flight testing and how it came into the crosshairs of President Jimmy Carter.

The Supersonic BONE: A Development and Operational History of the B-1 Bomber by Kenneth P. Katz is out now. It is published in the UK by Pen and Sword and in the USA by Casemate.

Eric 'Winkle' Brown is widely regarded as the greatest pilot Britain has ever produced. Many of the tales Eric told have gone done in legend, but in researching his friend of 40 years, historian Paul Beaver found that the story of Eric's birth holds many clues as to the man Eric would become and that this refines Eric's remarkable story.

15 Jun 2023The Battle of the Beams with Tom Whipple01:06:23

The invisible radar war that took place over Europe is often misunderstood. While the RAF's integrated defence system, which had radar at its heart, has entered the mythos, the German side of the tale has not often been told. Along with advances in radio navigation, which would prove vital for winning or losing the air war, the electronic sphere was as closely fought as any battle. Tom Whipple, the science editor of The Times, joins us to talk about the remarkable R.V. Jones and The Battle of the Beams.

On Saturday the 18th of February 1995, Radio 4 dedicated prime slots of its schedule for an unprecedented airing of an adaptation of Len Deighton’s Bomber. 29 Jun 2023Len Deighton's Bomber - The Historians01:07:50

Len Deighton’s Bomber, both the original novel and the 1995 Radio 4 adaptation, have had a huge impact on both readers and listeners of the last flight of O Orange for decades. But how has this impact affected the view of Bomber Command and did Len get it right? Dr Dan Ellin the archivist and historian for the International Bomber Command Center Digital Archive and James Jefferies, PhD Candidate and Assistant Lecturer at the University of Essex, join me to discuss Bomber’s place in Bomber Command’s histography.

13 Jul 2023The Many Bombings of Aachen with Dr Philip Blood02:55:23

On the night of the 13/14th of July 1943, RAF Bomber Command returned to the German city of Aachen again. This time they were carrying what they termed an "arson load". The attack created a firestorm that would take over a day to burn out and kill hundreds. Eleven days later, Operation Gomorrah, the firebombing of Hamburg, was carried out. Historian Dr Philip Blood joins me to discuss the July raid and the many other attacks on Aachen. In this extended episode, we look at Bomber Command's procedures and the intent used to promulgate the bombing offensive and the point at which their purpose became genocidal. WARNING - this episode contains a discussion of death, autopsies and genocide.

17 Aug 2023Empire Flying Boats at War Part 3 with Phil Vabre00:55:44

As the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour, their forces raced south towards Australia. The evacuation towards Australia would prove costly for the Empire Class flying boats of Qantas. In part 3 of our look at the Empire flying boats, Phil Vabre tells us about the attacks on Darwin and Broome and his research into uncovering the fate of Circe.

14 Sep 2023Flying B-17s with the 390th Bomb Group with Col Richard Bushong01:16:48

Every Thursday, Col. Richard Bushong heads over to the 390th Memorial Museum and holds court under the nose of the museum's B-17 Flying Fortress and answers questions for all the visitors who approach him. Dick is well placed to answer them as he flew 28 missions with the 8th Air Force's 390th Bomb Group in late 1943 and early 1944. At 100 years young, Dick is a fantastic chap to chat to and offers an insight into the realities of the 8th's battle over Occupied Europe.

21 Sep 2023The RAF Museum with CEO Maggie Appleton01:01:13

The RAF Museum sites at Hendon in London and RAF Cosford in the Midlands are home to a collection that tells the century-old story of the RAF. It is where my obsession with the Hawker Typhoon began and where I returned a couple of weeks ago to chat with the museum's CEO, Maggie Appleton. The RAF Museum has a broad story, so how does the museum manage the expectations of a wide variety of visitors of an ever-changing demographic? I sat down over a cup of tea and biscuits to discuss the museum's role, its present post-COVID and its future in the guise of its plans outlined in Strategy 2030. Yes, the Typhoon gets a mention or two.

Civil aviation is a vast undertaking and one that kept me in and out of trouble for 20 years of my working life. Author Ben Skipper has taken on the task of looking at the subject from the 1919 Paris Convention through to the end of the 747's service. 05 Oct 2023'Pegs' the Two-Seat Hawker Hurricane with Hurricane Heritage00:56:22

Hurricane Heritage has the incredible job of operating the world's only two-seat Hawker Hurricane, BE505 'Pegs'. Starting life as a Canadian Car and Foundry-built Mark XII with the RCAF serial AG287, the aircraft was converted and restored to a Mk.IIB 'Hurribomber' configuration in 2007. Just before the pandemic hit, her second conversation to a two-seat Hurricane was complete and now she operates flights all summer all over Europe with a truly unique experience. To find out more about BE505 and what a day with Hurricane Heritage is like, I spent the afternoon at White Waltham with pilot Mike Collett and Abigail Clark, who looks after ground operations for all the flights in 'Pegs'.

12 Oct 2023Mosquito with Rowland White00:58:44

On Wednesday 21st March 1945, the RAF's 140 Wing of De Havilland Mosquito FB.VI fighter bombers, with an escort of Mustangs, attacked the Shellhus in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Shellhus was the HQ for the Gestapo in Denmark, and most of the Danish Resistance's top men were within its walls. The low-level attack would be the last in a series flown by the men of 140 Wing that feature in Rowland White's latest book, Mosquito. There is more to the tale than the aircraft and the men and women of the Danish Resistance are as remarkable as the aircraft that flew down Copenhagen's streets that chilly March morning.

19 Oct 2023his Majesty's Airship with S.C. Gwynne00:55:59

The R101 was the great hope for Imperial Air Travel in late 1920s Britain. The brainchild of Christopher Birdwood Thomson and the Imperial Airship Scheme, R101 was the government-backed of the two grand airships, the other being the Barnes Wallis-designed R100, that were to whisk the great and good between England and India. S.C. Gwynne joins us to tell the tale of the doomed airship, the man who staked everything upon her and the princess his heart was set on.

26 Oct 2023Fly Girls with Keith O'Brien01:01:21

Amelia Earhart looms large in aviation history, but she was one of a cohort of incredible female flyers in 1920s America who fought hard to break the mould and show that they could out-fly and out-race the men at their own game and, in Louise Thaden, would claim their highest prize. In Fly Girls, New York Times bestselling author Keith O'Brien looks at this remarkable group of women who took to the skies and opened the throttle like no woman had before.

02 Nov 2023Was The Bristol Blenheim Really That Bad with James Jefferies00:49:53

Friend of the show, historian James Jefferies joins us to discuss the much maligned Bristol Blenheim. When the aircraft was developed, the Blenheim was faster than the RAF's latest fighters. But, come the outbreak of war, fighter design and the environment the Blenheim would be operating in would be very different. So, was the Blenheim really that bad? James tries to convince us otherwise.

30 Nov 2023Mythbusting the Convair B-58 Hustler with Col George Holt Jr. USAF Rtd.00:44:51

The Convair B-58 Hustler is regarded as one of the USAF's missteps in strategic bomber design from the 1950s and 60s. The claims that it was expensive and dangerous to fly led to its removal from service in the 1970s in favour of the Boeing B-52. But is that really the case? Former B-58 Navigator/Bombardier Col. Geroge Holt Jr. Rtd. joins us to reflect on his time on the Hustler and do some well-needed myth-busting.

07 Dec 2023Flying into a Mushroom Cloud with Dr Kit Chapman01:05:42

Dr Kit Chapman, a science historian from Falmouth University, takes us into the historical context and significance of atomic cloud sampling, a dangerous method employed during the Cold War era. The focus is on the Ivy Mike nuclear test in 1952, where pilots flew into a thermonuclear bomb cloud to gather data, contributing to element discovery and the development of atomic science. The ramifications and loss experienced due to this risky operation are also discussed, shedding light on the high stakes of this secret procedure.

14 Mar 2024The Frankenplanes of the Pima Air and Space Museum00:33:30

This week, we explore the fascinating background of aircraft that have undergone restoration, rebuild, or are newly built, focusing on their representation in museums and the complexity of their historical authenticity. We highlight the stories of four specific aircraft in the museum's collection: the Bristol Bolingbroke, the Curtiss P-40E Warhawk, a P-51 Mustang, a Hawker Hurricane and a B-24J Liberator named 'Star of India.' With each aircraft, Pima's CEO Scott Marchand and Director of Collections Andrew Boehly explain the careful considerations behind the paint schemes and in representing their history. Together, they shed light on the meticulous work behind the restoration of these 'Frankenplanes,' blending parts from various sources to piece together aircraft that stand as testaments to their contributions during WWII.

23 May 2024Learning to Fly the Douglas A-20 Havoc with Bob Reierson - Part 100:54:31

Bob Reierson joined the USAAF at age 18 and would find himself flying the Douglas A-20G Havoc in the Pacific. On my last visit to the Pima Air and Space Museum, director of collections Andrew Boehly arranged for Bob and I to sit down and discuss flying the A-20. In Part 1 of this 2-part interview, we discuss Bob joining up, learning to fly the PT-19, the BT-13, the UC-78, the B-25, and finally getting his hands on the A-20.

To get early access to part 2 to hear about Bob flying the A-20 in combat and climbing back in the cockpit of an A-20 for the first time in 80 years, become a Damcasteer today!

The Hump was the air bridge between India and China during the Second World War. The men of the Air Transport Command would face then unknown weather systems flying between Himalayan mountains that forever towered over them. New York Times bestselling author Caroline Alexander joins us to tell us about the men who flew The Hump, which is the subject of her book, Skies of Thunder.

27 Jun 2024The Future of the A-10 with Col. Nick 'Stoli' Radoescu00:49:55

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, the Warthog, has been earmarked for retirement for over a decade, but what is happening today with the men and women who keep the Hogs flying into their sixth decade? Col Nick 'Stoli' Radoescu is the commander of the 355th Operations Group based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. He oversees the operations of four squadrons of A-10s and their support units, including the training of the next generation of Hog drivers. Stoli kindly sat down with Boney to chat about his career, the A-10 today and the future of the Close Air Support mission in the USAF, with the spectre of the F-35 hanging over the venerable Hog.

04 Jul 2024The F-35 Trillon Dollar Trainwreck with Bill Sweetman01:00:16

The Lockheed-Martin F-35 Lightning II is slated to be the mainstay of the US Air Force and NATO's air forces for years to come. But as Bill Sweetman, veteran aerospace journalist and independent analyst, dissects in his new book, "Trillion Dollar Trainwreck: How the F-35 Hollowed Out the United States Airforce", the program's lack of oversight and leadership has left the aircraft and its operators in a dangerous position.

08 Aug 2024Flying Catch-22 with 'Stoney' Stonich00:47:06

#Catch-22 is one of Scott Marchand and I's favourite books, so when the opportunity came up to chat with Stoney Stonich, who, as a young pilot, signed on to be one of the B-25 pilots for Mike Nichols' adaptation in 1969, we jumped at the chance. Stoney tells us all about the production, the challenges and the excitement of filming aerial scenes, including THAT hair-raising takeoff and hanging out with the late great Bob Newhart. Stoney also is a T-6 man and helped form the North American Trainer Association. He has had quite the career, and it was fantastic to chat with him on The Damcasters.

12 Sep 2024Operation Chowhound with Lucy Hanson00:41:29

In 1945, the RAF and USAAF flew two remarkable operations. Mana and Chowhound were missions to deliver food and vital medical supplies to break the 'Hunger Winter' famine in Occupied Holland. A truce with the Nazis was agreed and the bombers flew unopposed to drop their vital cargo. In Hilversum, south of Amsterdam, was 14-year-old Lucy Hanson, who saw food fall from the sky. Today Lucy joins us to tell her incredible story of life under Nazi occupation and the day she no longer feared the bombers.

26 Sep 2024Navigating the Duxford Debate00:25:31

Following an uncomfortable debate about a news article in Aeroplane Monthly on Duxford's future plans, Matt reflects on how the Avgeek community communicates. He also looks at the challenges of online discourse within the aviation community, the need for constructive criticism and civil debate, what that means for our aviation publications and how he will try to engage with everyone going forward. NOTE: I made this a full-numbered episode in the end!

13 Feb 2025The Cartoonist of Stalag Luft III00:48:21

🛫Ben Smotherman was a B-17 pilot who was shot down on his 7th mission over occupied Europe in 1943. He was captured and ended up in the POW camp Stalag Luft III. While he was interned, he drew and painted his experiences in the camp. He also created the intrepid war correspondent Penny, the star of one of the camp newspapers comic strips. His daughter, astronaut Dr Jan Davis, joins us to tell us about her father through the pages of his war log.

Here it is, our 100th Episode! And the first under the new name! In February, my daughter and I headed to the USA and visited several aviation museums to celebrate reaching our 100th episode. So went for the OG of museums for the 100th, the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. While it is still undergoing the renovations, it was my first time back in nearly 35 years. Join us as we look around.

10 Mar 2025A Wander Around The Udvar-Hazy Center01:15:21

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (NASM)'s annex at Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC. To call it an annex is misleading, this place is massive! Home to an incredible collection of aircraft, this episode, our 101st, is just me trying to talk you around the place while trying to take it all in, especially when confronted with Enola Gay.

Just down the road from Washington, DC, is the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia Triangle. Here, they tell the story of The Corps, from its founding to its future. Dr Larry Burke is the aviation curator, and he showed us what goes into telling the tale of Marine Corps aviation before handing off to the arms and armor curator, my buddy Jon Bernstein, to show us the gems in the rest of the museum.

09 Mar 2023The Women Behind the Few with Dr Sarah-Louise Miller00:59:45

The Women's Auxillary Air Force has a specific spot in the public's memory. Either as the headphoned women sat around the RAF's plotting tables or of Susannah York's Section Officer Maggie Harvey in the Battle of Britain film. But what was the reality? War historian Dr Sarah-Louise Miller joins us to discuss the WAAFs who are the subject of her new book, The Women Behind the Few: The Women's Auxiliary Air Force and British Intelligence During the Second World War. Sarah helps us to look beyond the one image that has been popularised and to see the incredible work these remark markable women accomplished and, quite literally, helped win the war.

22 Sep 2022Alaina Lewis: The Art of Wooden Propellers00:47:20

It is rare when you are doomscrolling Instagram that you find something truly wonderful. Out at Culver Props in Rolla, Missouri, Alaina Lewis makes wooden propellers and finding her on Instagram was a balm in a dark time. Seeing the incredible skill that goes into making true customer propellers for custom aircraft is a joy. And then I got to meet Alaina. Our conversation is wide-ranging as we discuss how her family saved Culver Props, how she learnt the art from her Grandfather, the importance of reading specifications properly and, vitally, what the heck does a propeller actually do? The story Alaina tells is heartfelt and full of passion and skill and makes this podcaster with the softest of hands want to make things. I hope you enjoy it too. Once again, the Riverside app I use to record with my guests decided to play up, so my audio isn't what I hoped it would be. Alaina, though, sounds great, and that is the important thing.

24 Nov 2022Stephen Walker: Beyond - The Chief Designer, The Misfit and The Lost Cosmonauts01:04:26

Stephen Walker's Beyond was one of my reads of lockdown. Beyond covers the months leading up to Yuri Gagarin's Vostok 1 flight that made him the first human in space. Stephen has crafted a fantastic narrative that does not just focus on Gagarin but on the Chief Designer and the team that worked in such secrecy to put him in space.

I sat down with Stephen on the day NASA returned to the moon with the Artemis Orion test flight. We chatted about some of the lesser discussed aspects of what went into creating the book, the tragic Grigory Nelyubov and the myths of the Lost Cosmonauts.

You can grab a copy of Beyond: The Astonishing Story of the First Human to Leave Our Planet and Journey into Space at our bookshop below, and you can find the links to Stephen's social media there too.

01 Jun 2023Hogs and The Black Jet with Jon Boyd01:43:20

Lt. Col. (Rtd) Jon Boyd served in the USAF through transformational times. Joining in the late 1970s, Jon would fly the venerable Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, the Hog to those who fly her, before joining the then Top Secret program that was working up the Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk, The Black Jet as Jon refers to it. It would be flying the Stealth Fighter that Jon would see combat over Iraq during Desert Storm. Jon was very generous with his time and it was fantastic to be able to walk around one of his old aircraft, 84-0810 Dark Angel, which is being readied for display at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

20 Apr 2023Pauline Gower: Pioneering Leader of the Spitfire Women with Alison Hill00:47:31

This week I'm joined by poet and author Alison Hill whose new biography of Pauline Gower, the pilot who would spearhead the Women's Section of the ATA and ensure her pilots received equal pay for equal work, is one I was thoroughly moved by. In this episode, we discuss Pauline's early career, when she formed a nascent airline with friend Dorothy Spicer, whose book of their escapades received a rare positive review from the formidable Aeroplane Magazine editor C.G. Grey.

06 Oct 2022Kenneth Katz: The Supersonic BONE: Part 2 - Rebirth as the B-1B00:35:08

A change of President in 1981 led to a complete change in US military posture, and with Roland Regan came the rebirth of the B-1 project as a much-refined B-1B with a slightly different role.

Kenneth P. Katz is an Air Force Veteran and career aerospace engineer, returns to conclude the story of the B-1 as the aircraft is raced into service as the B-1B just in time for the Cold War to end. But, the aircraft would prove to be a vital asset for the war that would come and last two decades.

The Supersonic BONE: A Development and Operational History of the B-1 Bomber by Kenneth P. Katz is out now. It is published in the UK by Pen and Sword and in the USA by Casemate.

15 Sep 2022Ester Aube: The AirCorps Library and Saving North American Aviation's Drawings01:01:33

The sigh of relief that goes up when the phrase "there is a drawing for that" is uttered in aviation restoration houses around the world is palpable. The excitement when tens of thousands of original North American Aviation drawings were announced as being passed to the AirCorps Library was akin to a party. The tale of how Ken Jungeberg saved a treasure trove from the fire is only part of my conversation with the manager of the AirCorp Library, Ester Aube.

Ester is an archivist and one who manages the incredible resource that is the AirCrop Library, one that is available to everyone, not just the incredibly talented team at AirCorps out in Bemidji, Minnesota. In our chat, we discuss how the Library came into being, the intricacies of coping with microfilm, the joys of metadata, how Ken saved his treasure trove of drawings from being incinerated and, of course, this year's Oshkosh.

You can sign up for the AirCrops Library for just $6 a month or $60 a year. There you get access to an incredible array of manuals and technical drawings, perfect for the restorer, researcher, modeller or aviation geek. Check it out at: https://www.aircorpslibrary.com/

10 Nov 2022Ewan McArthur: Moorabbin Air Museum and Bristol Beaufighter Tour01:26:17

The day job recently took me to Oz where on my last morning, I went to Moorabbin in Southern Melbourne to visit Ewan McArthur at the Moorabbin Air Museum. The museum is home to an eclectic collection of aircraft with the view to have as many of them as hands-on as possible. The star attraction is their Mk.XXI Beaufighter. Ewan kindly showed me around, and we recorded the tour for you. We do ramble a bit, and we do eventually get to the Beaufighter, so stick with us.

Do check out the museum's website and social media because, as you'll hear, you can't keep Ewan and the team there down for long!

Let me know what you think.
