07 Jan 2021How to Be an Ambassador For Trust01:00:44

Being intentional about your choices in animal training and behavior, the shortcuts you take or don’t take in your relationships with people and animals all make up a mosaic that is our behavioral repertoire and learning evolution. How much that we recognize how our actions impact future decisions for the individuals around us makes us better animal trainers and more cognizant, inspirational leaders. Trust comes with honesty, and honesty comes with introspection and self reflection. This podcast ties in thoughts on being a business owner during the pandemic as well as putting together actionable steps for a building trust in a relationship with your bird for a huge toolkit and incredible behaviors.

28 Feb 2023Building Trust with a Nervous Non-Releasable Raven00:32:36

In this session of our Behavior Makeover Series, we work with a rehabilitated non-releasable raven that is showing a lot of avoidance behavior around his trainer. We create a behavior shaping plan using non-coercive negative reinforcement instead of counter conditioning or systematic desensitization to build the raven's trust. This works on all species, from parrots to eagles and mammals too. As always, follow your local and federal laws when working with native and exotic species and we do not condone rescuing wild birds without proper permits.

14 Sep 2020Conversation with Paige Davis00:53:59

In this far ranging conversation with Paige Davis, curator of bird training from World Bird Sanctuary, we talk about many aspects of training birds of prey, as well as training in general. We touch back upon weight management, as well as going into our mutual love of falconry. We also go into social media, why the Avian Behavior Lab began, and what made each of us change our tactics when it comes to negativity in the comments section.

07 Jul 2020Grief, Empathy, and Animal Relationships 00:34:40

Losing an animal can be a horrific experience, and a lot of research has gone into understanding the human-animal connection as well as how we grieve over animal loss. In this episode, we speak frankly about death and loss. We also broaden the lens to look at how understanding emotional pain can help us be better in our professional, personal, and online lives.

09 Jul 2022Keeping the Science in Animal Care with Barbara Heidenreich01:14:00

Why does science in animal care matter? My bestie Barbara Heidenreich and I sit down - this time in person - for a conversation about what it actually means to be scientific in animal care and behavior. And why that's important. We talk about natural behavior, species differences, the constructional approach, and so much more.

Resources for the Avian Behavior Lab (it's growing, people! We have big things on the horizon!) can be found on the link.

You can check out Barbara's Animal Training Fundamentals Program, of which I am a proud member and affiliate, also here.

24 Nov 2021What are the Fundamentals of Animal Training?00:37:22

In this episode, we talk about how our training ethos shapes every interaction we forge with the birds in our care. There are some great ways that we can build our foundation through a firm understanding of the animal training fundamentals, so let's get into it! How do you start training before you even start **training**??

16 Nov 2020Top Five Husbandry Behaviors to Train Any Bird00:34:45

What is a husbandry behavior and why train it? I think of it as the difference between fighting with your cohabitants over little behaviors and coming to an agreement over mutually beneficial behaviors. These behaviors are important whether we are talking to companion parrot lovers or professional animal caregivers. What's on your list of top five?

09 Mar 202243 How Murphy's Law Can Improve Your Animal Training00:40:35
What do trials for human's capacity for G force have to do with animal training? Turns out, the alleged beginnings of Murphy's law at Edwards Air Force Base in California by Colonel Stapp's team had its beginnings not in pessimism but practicality. Our episode explores how we can use this mindset can turn our understanding of animal behavior into mastery. Tangents include integrity in the animal training world, popcorn, and cat purrs.

05 Jun 2021Thinking of Free Flying Your Parrot?01:14:21

As a professional free flight bird trainer with high visibility, Hillary has heard from many different companion parrot free flyers of various experience levels. Here she examines several questions, including 1) What is parrot free flight and how does it work? 2) What are some ideal qualities in a parrot free flight trainer? 3) Can you learn to free fly your parrot from the internet? 4) What are some best practices in free flying and several more.

29 Mar 202470 Ruling the Roost: Managing your needy parrot and your family's happiness00:31:47

Having a parrot with extremely complicated screaming, attacking, pair-bonded behavior that won’t let you out of their sight without an intrusive cascade of undesirable behaviors can be a problem for the entire household. It also means layers of stress when you are torn between appeasing your parrot and your family. This excerpt from our deep dive masterclass series for members of the Avian Behavior Lab helps us look at the angles of this complex issue and how we tease apart which challenge we take on first from a science-based perspective. This series was extremely enriching, and we know you will glean some actionable details from the science here.

09 Dec 2020Extinction Procedures: When Ignoring the Problem is the Problem00:43:24

We are going all in on the behavior analysis term of extinction (not the existential crisis) and why ignoring problem behavior is problem behavior in and of itself. See what we did there?

We use loads of examples, from parrots to cranes, hornbills to vultures, to cover this topic. We talk about other fallout scenarios and drawbacks from using extinction procedures, like riding the extinction burst, fallout frustration and aggression and other scenarios.

16 Mar 202469 Gail Buhl from the Minnesota Raptor Center and Partners for Wildlife00:56:15

This interview with Gail Buhl from the Minnesota Raptor Center and Partners for Wildlife is a thoughtful journey filled with raptor behavior tidbits, the evolution of operant conditioning in bird behavior management, raptor rehabilitation, imprinting and so much more.

We talk about how working with rehabilitated birds of prey provides such a unique tapestry that has informed our progression as trainers to humane methods of choice based training, and Gail's owl mentors in her work with small owls. We go into depth about how providing these crucial contingencies gives our birds a language that they learn to rely on.

06 Jan 202241. The What's and the Why's of Animal Training Mentorships00:49:50

Animal training mentors, role models, and teachers can be incredibly impactful for our growth. This was a concept I actively sought when I knew I wanted to learn as much as I possibly could about animal behavior. We talk about:

Is a mentor a necessity or a luxury?
What to look for in a mentor/role model
What bad relationships teach us
Why it's ok to eclipse your mentor's learning journey
What does your mentor want out of the relationship?

30 May 2023Raising a Well-Socialized Owl00:42:26

Our two favorite subjects, owls and raising ambassadors. Owls are considered flagship species, which means that while they may not necessarily be directly endangered, they are species chosen to raise support for biodiversity conservation in a given place or social context. This means that due to their widespread appeal, they have the capacity to draw in an audience to more complex issues related to their ecosystems and less charismatic components. What this also means is that they can act as flagship individuals for education programs. We often say people come for the owls and stay for the vultures.

But raising an owl for life as ambassador is challenging, even to be a glove bird. We want the bird's presence to reflect the care and expertise that the organization requires. In this episode we discuss what this looks like in the beginning stages and how the many mistakes we made led us to our mission of raising ambassadors over ten species of native and non-native owls.

20 Jun 2020Are you stopping your animal's problem behavior or solving it?00:27:10

Behavior management techniques are not all created equal. Some methods may look like they are working, but either have to be used over and over again or actually contribute to larger problems down the road. How do we know if behavior advice that we receive from other animal trainers, social media forums, and even veterinarians will help or hurt our relationship with the animal we are working with? Three important questions to ask in this podcast!

28 Apr 2021Why Scientific Literacy Matters to Our Animals01:29:31

How does understanding the brain is wired for thought help the animals in our care as well as conservation? From concepts of how we handle behavior questions we don’t know the answer to all the way to consuming information on documentaries, we look at how asking questions and filling in the picture can help us understand how science works and how the natural world is still very much a part of who we still are, technology and all.

27 Mar 202578 Bridging the Gap: What Rehabbers Can Learn from Progressive Bird Training00:45:03

In this heartfelt and insight-packed episode, Hillary Hankey sits down with winter intern Levi Soucek, a wildlife rehabilitator, educator, and outreach coordinator at the Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center. Levi reflects on her transformative 12-week internship at the Avian Behavior Ranch, sharing how hands-on progressive training experiences reshaped not only her approach to ambassador bird care—but also reignited her passion for the work.

We explore:

  • What it means to truly train with positive reinforcement (beyond the buzzwords)

  • The power of choice-based training and offering degrees of freedom

  • Levi’s “aha” moments while working with challenging birds like a Great Horned Owl and Andean Condor

  • How foundational concepts finally clicked in real time

  • Practical takeaways she’s bringing back to her rehab center—from training strategy to team communication

This episode is also a reflection on team dynamics, mentorship, emotional labor in animal care, and what it means to feel valued and connected in your work. Whether you're a rehabber, falconer, educator, or companion parrot trainer, Levi’s story will leave you inspired, informed, and energized to take your own training to the next level.

15 Mar 2020Bonus Episode! Should you add another parrot to your flock?00:32:08

Bonus Content! We discuss many variables that go into a serious decision about whether or not to add another parrot to your flock and how we can know whether the birds will get along. There are many things that we can take into account as to how the decision will impact our household long term.

01 Oct 202475 Avoidance Behaviors and Weight Management in Birds of Prey00:22:19

Our Fall 2024 Bird of Prey Workshop focused on key topics such as managing fear and aggression in raptors using the constructional approach and non-coercive negative reinforcement and using progressive weight management techniques.  Handling fear-based reactions, like those seen in a juvenile bald eagle, requires careful arrangement of the environment and building skills with your bird to have more reinforceable behaviors. The workshop also highlighted the importance of fitness and motivation over strict weight control, ensuring the bird's health and well-being remain a priority.

22 Aug 202474 Training your bird for transportation00:16:50

Training your bird for transportation isn't just an important part of education programming, it's a good life skill to have. For wildlife rehabilitation organizations, nature centers, and other small bird of prey centers, this is an essential skill that trainers rely on. For companion parrot people, this is an important behavior to trainer before it is needed in case of emergencies. This episode is an excerpt from our roadmap on Your Bird's First Education Program inside the Avian Behavior Lab. It's full of tactical advice on how to shape calm behavior for riding comfortably in a crate in a vehicle. We talk about what to do about tidbitting, why we don't use food very much to shape this behavior, and what we use to reinforce with instead. We discuss challenges with equipment and how to use context to shape the behavior.

Support courses in the Avian Behavior Lab include our latest updated version of Crate Training, the roadmap, Creating a Training Program, and How to use context to shape a behavior.

08 Apr 2022What Matters When Training an Owl Ambassador00:32:39

Owl ambassadors can be tough to train, but in our opinion, so worth it. They are powerful conservation ambassadors for myriad of topics. We topic about two key things that we look at when we set ourselves up to train an owl ambassador. Our Owl Ambassador Masterclass gets really deep on this subject, and you can purchase it on demand at the Avian Behavior Lab.

11 Dec 201903 Avian Teachers: Larue the caracara and fearful behavior00:34:18

Larue the crested caracara has taught us a lot of things, we wanted to zoom in the focus on three things here that are not only common issues as trainers, but are relatable no matter if you are working with a caracara, a hornbill, or a companion parrot.

Caracaras are intelligent like parrots and corvids, social, enjoy walks like hornbills, vultures, and other species, and ride around on the glove like raptors, although Larue doesn't have traditional falconry equipment like anklets and jesses.

In this episode, we discuss how
1) as a team, we worked through his wing bandaging maintaining a positive relationship
2) we give him tools to work through his fearful behavior
3) we use alternative motivational techniques so that we aren't relying on a heavy weight management practices.

04 Jun 2022Are you a falconer or a petkeeper?00:50:31

ICYMI, petkeeper is a derogatory term in a niche community like falconry. This episode explores the roots of some falconry disagreements and why it's so important to find a supportive community that fosters curiosity and an ethical training paradigm that fits you and your bird's needs.

05 Jan 202467 What we learned about birds in 202301:11:01

What did we learn about birds in 2023? What was the big bird news of the year? (or, Simone and Hillary talk about owls)

Hillary sits down with fellow falconer, bird lover, and owl enthusiast Simone Lupson-Cook to talk about our favorite facts about bird behavior, ethology, conservation, and more that we learned about birds this year. From birds in the news, our visit to the Raptor Research Foundation Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and reading books together, we share our favorite facts that we have come across, from snowy owl talons, barn owl math, Succession, and the many many threats that face birds globally past and present.

05 Jan 2023Challenges Facing Rehabilitated Education Birds of Prey00:34:25

Working with rehabilitated birds of prey as education ambassadors is rewarding work, but it can be fraught with challenges as well. From working with unruly (and opinionated!) audiences to dealing with heartbreaking avian losses and health issues, it can feel thankless at times. In this episode, we focus on two big issues: working with a volunteer staff and sensitive birds coming from a place of trauma. Volunteers are the backbone of many wildlife rehabilitation centers, and their work is crucial to the survival of so many birds. But managing a volunteer staff can have unique obstacles when it comes to working with sensitive education birds as well.

26 Aug 2021How Our Animals Handle the Pandemic00:58:57

Animal behavior sure does love routine. But what happens when that routine changes and is beyond our control? What about those changes that affect our mental well-being and then transfer on the way we work with our animals and fellow animal lovers? We talk about the three different ways this impacted our work. We also discuss pandemic pets and what we can do when the goal posts change, routines change, and how to get through tough situations with animal care in mind.

17 Oct 2020To Clip or Not To Clip Your Parrot00:48:59

The concept of leaving your parrot flighted or clipping its wings is a huge topic with much debate. There are many opinions going both ways based on health, safety, welfare, and psychological benefits.

It shouldn’t be any surprise that here at Avian Behavior International, we are very much pro-flight when it comes to all birds. But our ethos is that of using science based methodologies to inform our decisions and suggestions. This means that rarely is there a one-size-fits-all solution or recommendation and that many variables impact the quality of choices that we make. So it may or may not be surprise that when it comes to being pro-flight or pro-clip, the answer from us is, “it depends.”

22 Jan 20205. Motivation Part II: Influences on Bird of Prey Motivation in Training Programs00:34:10

In the second episode of our podcasts on motivation, we look at how different factors in the environment and the way we train our birds of prey in education programs and falconry can impact motivation before we ever consider factors like managing diet.

04 Apr 2020Raptor Q&A Part 100:32:07

This Q&A tackles sensitive and challenging subjects: progressive weight management principles and working with birds with problem histories. It is part of larger conversation and is by no means all inclusive. The information in this podcast may not be suitable for all situations and is meant to be used in conjunction with tailored, individual help. Please understand that when working with your birds' weight and diets, you out always know the health and welfare of your bird. Avian Behavior International believes strongly in the practice of healthy flying, training, and relationships with food and the limited use of weight management, and only when needed. We have many other resources to be used in conjunction with this podcast.

03 Aug 202473 Dr. Stephanie Rosenbloom and the Appeal to Nature Fallacy00:54:44

Looking to the wild for answers is a common refrain among bird people when it comes to care advice, particularly nutrition. And while this concept seems well grounded in science, the actual practice is much more complex and nuanced. For parrots, we don't always know what, how, or why the eat what the eat. And when we do know, replicated the conditions and food stuffs can be impossible for those of us who have parrots in our care.

We sit down with fellow science communicator Dr. Stephanie Rosenbloom who not only has a PhD in chemistry, but a keen interest in parrot nutrition. We tease apart the idea of the appeal to nature fallacy, that occurs when a person assumes that what is natural is good and true, without considering the effects of their actions on the environment. We discuss a recent post that went viral on social media about parrots eating meat and other topics about diet and further into philosophy.

For more of Stephanie's talks, you can check out https://avianbehavior.thinkific.com/courses/avocet-2024

03 Jul 202472 Why We Value Fly Offs in Free Flight Training00:54:35

"If you are looking for guarantees with free flight training in birds, you are in the wrong place." In this episode, Avian Behavior International founder Hillary Hankey and ABI Animal Training Lead Katie Pnewski talk about how developing skills for birds and training staff around fly offs has been instrumental in their practice as team leaders. A practice of safety and growth doesn't come from expecting mistakes not to happen, it comes from preparing for them to happen and getting the most out of the experience when you are working through a solution. In free flight, you learn that true growth comes from being in uncomfortable situations.

30 Dec 201904 Motivation Part 1: Help, I can't get my parrot to stop biting and screaming!00:38:09

What is motivation and how does it impact our relationships with our companion parrots? Do we want our birds to be robots, bending to our whims and wills in order to keep from getting bitten or yelled at all ay? We are going to talk about an old school term in weight management of free flying and ambassador birds, and that is ad lib weight. Another term might be trap weight or base weight. Reason why this is old school is that for some people implies your bird has this same reference weight throughout their lives, regardless of muscle tone, seasonality, and age and it can be downright dangerous. There are many issues with ad lib weights, such as how we figure it out without coercion or restraint, the assumption that all birds can achieve steady state, and that some birds come from a place of food trauma. Not to mention that use prescriptive numbers to assess health can be problematic. Let's level up!

We look at many different metrics that help us cross reference a dynamic set of reference weights across the seasons that help us identify healthy birds and high welfare.

If you know us, we are going to discuss with you actionable, practical science based training tips that help you level up your training program that you can put into place right away. This podcast is from our bonus class from our Avian Behavior Lab Masterclass on Progressive Weight Management that we did on a YouTube livestream. Be your best with birds, and join us for lively discussion on deep topics.

14 Jul 2020Anthropomorphism and its Impacts on Our Relationships With Animals, Training, Conservation00:31:29

Why is that owl grumpy? Anthropomorphism means assigning human qualities to non human things, such as animals and even our computers. We do it all of the time. Where it becomes important to assess is how it influences our relationship with animals in our homes, conservation measures, and even environmental policy. We go broad, talking about our dogs faces all the way to the California Condor Recovery Project.

11 Jun 2020What Makes Owls are Hard to Train00:23:27

Owl conservation ambassadors can make a huge impact on an audience for wildlife educators. As iconic and instantly recognizable, they foster important connections with the natural world that have been ingrained in human culture for centuries. However, there are many reasons why an owl is a challenging training prospect and takes experience and keen observations. Here we explore some of these concepts.

28 Sep 202364 Why Your Bird is Attacking You00:47:49

News flash, if your bird is attacking you, it probably doesn't mean that they hate you. What it does mean is that we have a lot in our relationship to unpack, from environmental conditions to expectations. When parrots in our homes come at us, either from the ground or on the wing, it can be really scary. Even cockatiels and small conures can pack a punch with those little beaks. Bird drama also can cause family drama, and no one wants to feel unsafe in their own home. We talk about behavior advice that belongs in the Dark Ages and why it is keeping you from success, we get real with how to realistically approach this problem, and we introduce our free challenge, Stop Attacking Me! 20 Dec 202366 Dr. Lucy Kemp on Lead Poisoning in Ground Hornbills00:36:28

Lead poisoning is a really big deal for wildlife, and Southern Ground Hornbills appear to be particularly sensitive to lead levels in the blood. In August, Avian Behavior International visited the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project in South Africa to identify some key behavior objectives to enhance the reintroduction strategy for the Southern ground hornbill. This bird has one complicated life strategy, punctuated by a long life and intricate social structure.

10 Mar 202009 Imprint versus Parent Raised Ambassador Birds of Prey00:25:39

This episode is inspired by a profound discussion from our Raptor Workshop earlier this year. We discuss some of the benefits and challenges of the different species with respect to hand raising versus parent raising, what it means to imprint and what it means to let grow up, how to ask the right questions, and what you can do if you aren't sure if acquiring an conservation ambassador owl is right for your organization

28 Sep 2022Do you use food to train your parrot?00:39:53

Using food as a contrived reinforcer to train our parrots is often fraught with emotions and tension. And not without good reason. But we can discuss the differences in contrived reinforcement and natural reinforcement and how both are important components in building strong relationships and decode our interactions with our birds. These concepts can uncover why our birds might stop doing what they used to do, what skills they need to build to be successful in our homes and lives and how we can become better buddies together. 23 Apr 2020Is Your Parrot "Aggressive?" 00:30:18

Aggressive behavior in parrots looks like different things to each of us. While different terms like dominant, bold, or territorial are often used as explanatory variables, none of these describe in precise terms what the behavior actually is or under what conditions it occurs. Understanding this foundation is an important step to working through small and large challenges with our birds.

19 Feb 202577 Parrot Recall00:38:03

This is an excerpt from our live parrot recall training, focusing on the pitfalls of over-training and the importance of recall in various scenarios. We share examples of a black palm cockatoo named Jupiter, whose wings were rehabilitated using falconry techniques, and a 24-year-old cockatoo named Henry, who was initially clipped. Hillary emphasized the need for systematic and methodical training, avoiding forceful interactions, and using neutral or positive reinforcers. She highlighted the importance of generalizing recall to different environments and surfaces, and the potential issues of circular reinforcement. She also addressed specific questions about training a blue and gold Macaw, stressing the need for space and appropriate training methods.

19 Apr 202358 Are LIMA and the humane hierarchy still serving your bird training?01:09:07

We are going to be talking about how LIMA (least intrusive, minimally aversive) and the humane hierarchy structure stopped serving me in my animal behavior progress, what got me there, and how I help my clients instead. We take a HUGE look at how it's not uncommon in science for us to wittingly or unwittingly select the results that we want to move our hypothesis along, and this can have enormous results in health, nutrition, and yes, animal behavior.

15 Dec 202140 What's the best way to train a bird of prey?00:53:14

How do you train your dragon? If you have been on the earth for a hot minute, you know that everyone has an opinion for how you need to train the bird of prey in your care. Let's go over the methods, well most of them. Or some of them. We analyze the environmental conditions that inform our decisions, jess free or no, free lofting, tethering, strobes and all kinds of tools we can choose (or opt out of). With minimal tangents this time (whew!) and only a few rants. Lucky you! Buzzwords include pride, stress, weight management and pluralism.

01 Sep 2022Training Free Lofted Birds of Prey00:49:45

Training free lofted birds of prey can be an incredibly enriching program for trainer and bird, but it can also lead to an unnecessarily protracted program that brings all parties a lot of stress. Bird of prey trainers that are interested in this type of training need to assess a number of environmental conditions, including their own skills and support system in their assessment prior to commencing a project such as this. This is because a lot of stress can be transmitted, either in over management of weight or in rehearsal of fear patterns while we plod on, footloose and fancy free of deadlines. We highlight two case studies of two very different birds we recently worked with free lofted, as well as discuss the costs and benefits of free loft training
