02 Jan 2019 | Demetra George on Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice | 01:17:36
Episode 188 features an interview with astrologer Demetra George about her new book titled Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice, A Manual of Traditional Techniques - Volume One: Assessing Planetary Condition.
This is the first of two volumes where Demetra provides a detailed treatment of ancient Hellenistic astrology, which is the type of astrology that was practiced around the time of the Roman Empire.
Unlike other treatments of ancient astrology, Demetra spends most of the book focusing on the actual techniques and practice of the early forms of astrology, rather than spending a bunch of time talking about the history.
It is also designed to be a workbook, so that at the end of each chapter you can apply the techniques to your own chart, using guided lessons so that you can confirm that you understand what you read by putting the interpretive principles into practice.
The book was published by Rubedo Press, and can be ordered here:
Demetra George, Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice
This interview with Demetra is available in both audio and video versions below.
The interview was originally recorded on November 9, 2018, but then I just released it today on January 2, 2019 to coincide with the official release of the book today.

30 Nov 2018 | December 2018 Astrology Forecast: No More Retrogrades | 02:23:48
In episode 183 of the podcast astrologers Chris Brennan, Kelly Surtees, and Austin Coppock discuss the astrological forecast for December of 2018, and the end of a year that has been filled with a seemingly endless barrage of retrograde planets.
This episode was recorded earlier in November than usual, and it opens with Austin telling a humorous story about some recent Mercury retrograde snafus he ran into while trying to get a new passport, so that he could fly to Australia for the "So Below" event with Gordon White of the Rune Soup podcast (Austin ended up making it).
Early in the episode we also discuss the fine balance between taking astrology seriously but still being able to have some degree of levity about it, or a live and let live attitude with other approaches and people whose views may differ from your own.
Eventually we get to the forecast for December, which features Mercury stationing direct in Scorpio, and lunations in Sagittarius and Cancer.
Later in the episode we highlight one auspicious electional chart this month, a Jupiter in Sagittarius election, which can be used for beginning a new venture or undertaking.
Below you will find the show notes, followed by links to download the recording of this episode at the bottom of the page, which is available in both audio and video versions.

16 Dec 2018 | Astrologers on Becoming Parents | 01:36:46
Episode 184 features a discussion with Ashley Otero and Patrick Watson about what it is like for an astrologer to become a parent, and some of the unique questions that arise when parenting with astrology.
Ashley and Patrick are both professional astrologers who have become parents over the past few years, and this experience has raised a lot of interesting questions for them in a number of areas.
You can find out more about Ashley at: CosmicSoupBowl.com
You can find out more about Patrick at: PatrickWatsonastrology.com
Here are some of the questions we tried to address in this discussion:
Episode Outline
What’s it like to be a parent and an astrologer?
Are there factors about delineating a child’s chart that feels unethical?
Does it feel unethical or risky to predict aspects of a child’s future with astrology?
Does speculating the probabilities of your child’s (or anyone else’s child) chart carry the risk of unintentionally shaping the parent’s perception of the child’s life and choices?
Have there been milestone moments when you recorded the date and time that they occurred in order to cast a chart?
Or does doing so take a person out of the present?
Have you personally witnessed transits to your child’s chart manifesting more directly in your life rather than their life (such as their 7th or 10th house transits)?
How does observing the 4th/10th houses of your child influence your perception of yourself and has it helped you decide how to behave with your child/children?
Have you found yourself able to reconcile differences between you and your children by consulting the composite chart or comparing the natal charts?
Some astrologers who are also parents might feel anxious about approaching transits that their child/children will experience (like perhaps Mars transits or other character-forming transits from outer planets for example). Have you experienced this, or did you manage to find a way to deal with trying transits, such as the Mars return which happens around the age of two?
How do you feel about analyzing the zodiacal releasing periods of children’s charts--particularly for career?
If you are an astrologer and a parent, let us know what you think of some of the questions we discussed in this episode in the comments section below.

09 Jan 2019 | Why Are More Women Interested in Astrology Than Men? | 01:18:22
In episode 189 astrologer Lisa Ardere joins the show to discuss why there seem to be more women who are interested in astrology than men, and some related questions that have become topics of discussion recently in the astrological community.
It is generally accepted that there seem to be a greater number of women who are into astrology than men, and different theories for why this is have been discussed in the astrological community for years.
The topic came up again recently with the publication of an article on November 15, 2018 titled Why Straight Men Hate Astrology So Much, by Hannah Ewens for Vice UK.
This prompted a lot of new discussion in the astrological community, including a piece by Samuel F. Reynolds titled Do Straight Men Really Hate Astrology?
In this episode Lisa and I sat down to talk about the issue, and discuss some different theories that are commonly put forward about the gender disparity in western astrology.
We tried to avoid drawing firm conclusions in terms of saying exactly why the disparity exists, since there are so many different contributing factors and views on the issue.
Instead we hoped to help open up the discussion for a wider audience, by highlighting the topic as part of an ongoing dialogue in the astrological community.
You can follow Lisa on Twitter @LisaArdere, or at ArdorAstrology.com.

22 Dec 2018 | Answering Astrology Questions from Twitter | 03:19:39
In episode 185 astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan take questions from listeners about various astrological topics, ranging from practicing astrology professionally to conceptual issues involving the houses and the zodiac.
We start out the episode by catching up on what has been going on for the three of us and in the astrological community since our last chat together in mid-November, and then we move on to taking some questions.
Most of the questions were submitted to us by astrologers on Twitter, where a pretty active and vibrant community surrounding astrology has developed lately.
You can follow each of us on Twitter at:

Below you will find an outline with the questions we dealt with in this episode, followed by links to download the audio or video versions of this episode.
News and Notable Events
We start out with a 45-minute warm-up chat, since it has been a month since the three of us last talked, and we had a lot to catch up on.
Austin's successful trip to Australia.
Kelly is doing a workshop in Seattle in January.
Chris launched his 2019 astrology calendar posters.

Questions Answered in This Episode
Here are the questions we touched on in this episode, starting with the username of each person who asked one from Twitter. The original thread on Twitter has all of the questions, including a bunch of great ones we didn't get to.
Saturn & the Sun Astrology @saturnsunastro
"I’ve always wanted to know how other astrologers approach consultations where the client is deliberately unwilling to participate in a dialogue exchange. What, then, is your method of approach? Working in metaphysical shops, this was often the case."
maren altman Ⓥ @marenaltman
Business question: do you all make most of your income directly from consultations or is it through teaching & other passive sources?
The Strology @thestrology_
"How did each of you discover *your way* of doing readings? How’d you come down to figuring out your method / system of prioritizing what to look at when presented with a client’s chart? How long did it take to solidify your method?"
(Sidenote from Chris: Shakirah Tabourn just released the NFLUX astrology magazine, and it is awesome! Would highly recommend checking it out.)
Christina Mariae @chmariae
Is it rude to ask what house system an astrologer uses when inquiring about a session?
Ashley Bober @astro_ashley11
I'm curious when you get a first time client natal reading, what do start with when talking to the client?
Old School Astrology @oldschoolastro
In a reading, to what extent do each of you explain the techniques? Do you just deliver the information to the client, or do you reference the placements and configurations that you’re getting the information from? And if you do explain, how much time do you spend explaining?
BIG WITCH ENERGY @millymichelle
Proper use of the Draconic chart if any of y’all use it, and how to properly integrate it into the expression of self up against the natal chart. What purpose does it serve besides the knee jerk magic of it being a rendering of ‘soul’ purpose. 😬✨
Kipp @EudaimoniaAstro
I'd love to hear the three of you compare and contrast your views and application of the lunar nodes.
Catherine Urban @AstroCatherine
When clients ask you if they should leave their partner... obviously we cannot make that choice for them. What are some of the ways you’ve helped people navigate this situation?

21 Jan 2019 | Electional Astrology: How to Find Auspicious Dates & Times | 03:09:54
In episode 190 of the podcast astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim provide an introduction to electional astrology, which is the application of astrology to find auspicious dates and times to begin new ventures and undertakings.
On the forecast episodes of the podcast we regularly feature an auspicious electional chart for the month ahead, but we realized recently that most listeners are not familiar with the rules of electional astrology, or how to use the charts we provide.
So we decided to do an entire episode on electional astrology, in order to provide a detailed introduction to the subject.
Since this is a big topic, the episode ended up being three hours long:
In the first hour we set the stage by talking about the premise of electional astrology, and some conceptual and philosophical issues related to the topic.
In the second hour we get into the technical details of what to look for and focus on when trying to find a good electional chart.
Finally, in the last hour, we answer some questions about electional astrology that were submitted by listeners through Twitter.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions, and you will find links to both at the bottom of this page, just after the show notes.
Resources for Electional Astrology
Some other resources on electional astrology mentioned in this episode:
The Electional Astrology Podcast - Our monthly podcast on elections for the month ahead
Electional Astrology Course - Chris' online course for learning electional astrology
Electional Astrology Podcast Outline
Here is our outline with the major points we touched on in this episode:
What is Electional Astrology?
The premise of the "doctrine of origin."
The quality and future of anything can be determined by looking at the alignment of the planets at the moment it began.
The potentiality of a system is embedded in the moment of its inception.
Everything has a chart.
Events and ventures can have birth charts, not only people
Election simply means “choice.”
Electional astrology involves proactively choosing a chart to begin something.
If you can control the beginning then you can control the outcome.
Distinction between inceptional and electional astrology.
Original name for this branch was katarchic astrology, from the Greek katarchē.
History of Electional Astrology
Probably originated in the Mesopotamian astrological tradition.
Most cultures that develop astrology also develop something like electional astrology.
Earliest and most influential treatment in western tradition is book 5 of Dorotheus of Sidon.
Most later Hellenistic and Medieval treatments of elections based on Dorotheus
Earlier fragments by Petosiris indicate earlier lost sources from 1st century BCE
Horary astrology probably partially developed out of electional astrology eventually.
What Kinds of Things Can You Elect?
In theory anything, but typically used for more important ventures
Common uses: weddings, business incorporations, signing contracts, listing a house, etc.
Can use it for smaller things still important to you: sending important emails, etc.
Famous instances of electional astrology:
The founding of Baghdad in 762
John Dee elected the coronation chart for Queen Elizabeth I.
Ronald Reagan’s astrologer Joan Quigley elected many major presidential events.
What Do You Do at the Electional Time?
Typically the most symbolically significant initial act that begins whatever you are starting.
Establish what the most symbolically significant beginning of the event is.
What is the most important moment?
Are there multiple beginnings, or just one?
Examples:
Saying “I do” and being pronounced married at wedding (begins marriage)
Starting to write a book/article and saving draft.
Opening doors for business for the first time.
Leaving your house for a trip.

12 Feb 2019 | Zodiacal Releasing: An Ancient Timing Technique | 04:31:15
In episode 192 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim present a detailed introduction to the ancient zodiacal releasing timing technique, which divides your life into chapters and paragraphs, and helps to identify your life story.
In ancient Hellenistic astrology there were several different time-lord techniques that were used to determine when the potential of placements in the birth chart would be awakened, although many of them were lost in the transmission of astrology over the past 2000 years.
Zodiacal releasing is a time-lord technique that has been recovered over the past two decades through translations of the Greek text of the 2nd century astrologer Vettius Valens.
In this episode Chris and Leisa present a 4-hour workshop on the technique, in order to provide the audience with a broad overview and introduction to zodiacal releasing.
There is a long set of show notes below, which outline some of the main points we made during the course of the episode.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions, and you will find links to both at the bottom of this page, just after the show notes.
Zodiacal Releasing Podcast Outline
Here is our outline with the major points we touched on in this episode:
Introduction
A collection of lost timing systems known as “time-lord” techniques.
Recovered in the past 30 years due to revival of ancient astrology.
Many of them were lost in the transmission of astrology over 2000 years.
Recovered through translations.
They time the activation of latent potentials in the birth chart.
Not all chart placements are activated at all times.
Some lie dormant until awakened through these timing techniques.
Similar to dasa systems in Indian astrology
Most powerful one found so far is called zodiacal releasing.
From 2nd century astrologer Vettius Valens.
Divides the life into chapters and paragraphs.
Used to study different topics like career, health, or relationships.
Can time career peaks and transitions.
Periods that are experienced as more subjectively positive or negative.
Our goal here today is to provide a broad introduction and overview to the topic.
One of the most complex techniques, but also one of the most interesting and profound.
Usually taught at the end of Chris' Hellenistic astrology course.
The full lecture on this is 18 hours long.
Main goal is to introduce the technique to novices here
Some additional personal anecdotes that may be useful to advanced users.
Calculating Zodiacal Releasing Periods
First must calculate the Lot of Fortune, Spirit, and Eros.
These are the starting points for the ZR technique.
Three easy ways:
Arabic Part or Lot Calculator on Astro-Seek.com
Thanks to Petr Soural from Astroseek
Astro.com → extended chart selection → style: Astrodienst w/ Arabic Points

07 Mar 2019 | Talking with Vedic Astrologer James Braha | 01:43:21
Episode 196 features an interview with Vedic astrologer James Braha, where we talk about his life and work in astrology.
James is the author of 6 books on astrology, including Ancient Hindu Astrology for the Modern Western Astrologer, and The Art and Practice of Ancient Hindu Astrology.
For more information about his work visit:
JamesBraha.com
Our original discussion topic for this episode was supposed to be dasha techniques, but we ended up drifting towards talking about a bunch of other topics instead, since James has had such an interesting and varied life with astrology.
During the course of the episode we talk about how James got into astrology, what it was like studying with different teachers in India, and different observations he has picked up over the years through doing consultations.
One of the themes of the episode is the idea of lineage, and the difference between book learning versus having certain astrological doctrines transmitted directly from student to teacher.

18 Feb 2019 | The Vimshottari Dasha System in Vedic Astrology | 01:51:20
Episode 193 features an interview with astrologer Freedom Cole on the vimshottari dasha system, which is a timing technique used in Vedic astrology.
In the last episode of the podcast we presented an introduction to a recently recovered ancient time-lord technique called zodiacal releasing, and noted how a number of similar techniques called "dasha" systems are still used in Indian astrology to this day.
For this episode I decided to interview an expert in Vedic astrology in order to provide western astrologers with a well-rounded introduction to one of the most popular dasha techniques that is used today.
Freedom is the author of two books on Indian astrology: Science of Light: An Introduction to Vedic Astrology, and Science of Light, Volume 2: Foundations of Vedic Astrology.
He also teaches a course on Vedic astrology, and the next class begins on March 28, 2019. You can find more information on his website:
ScienceOfLight.net
This episode is meant to be a general introduction to the calculation, conceptualization, and interpretation of the vimshottari dasha system. The outline is largely based on the chapter on dashas in volume 1 of Freedom's book, although the book goes into more detail.
There is a long set of show notes below, which outline some of the main points touched on during the course of the episode.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions, and you will find links to both at the bottom of this page.
Vimshottari Dasha Podcast Outline
Here is an outline with some of the major points touched on in this episode:
Introduction
Introducing Freedom, and talking about his background.
Author of Science of Light (2 vols.)
Follows the Parashara tradition primarily.
Translated Sanskrit excerpts from Parashara in his book.
Introduce the concept of dashas and timing (kalana).
Understand the past, correctly perceive the present, and predict the future.
The birth chart indicates various things.
Dashas indicating when the indication will occur during the life.
Not all chart placements are activated at all times.
Many different dasha systems in Indian astrology.
Three broad categories of dasha systems.
Different dashas used for different purposes.
The most common or popular is the vimshottari dasha system.
First appears in Parashara (circa 8th century?).
Calculation
How to calculate Vimshottari dasha periods, generally speaking.
There is a new free online vimshottari dasha calculator on Astro-Seek.
Was just launched today to coincide with this episode.
Still in development. Report any bugs to the developer.
Most programs for Windows like Solar Fire will calculate it; no good ones for Mac.
The program Freedom recommends for Windows: http://www.vedicastrologer.org/jh/
Astrodienst has a helpful guide for calculating vimshottari dasha periods, but sadly do not seem to offer chart calculation services for this technique on their site.
The technique is calculated roughly as follows:
Determine the nakshatra the Moon is located in at birth.
The nakshatras are 27 lunar mansions, with 13°20' degrees each.
Note that these positions are sidereal.
Each nakshatra is associated with a specific planet.
Diagram showing the nakshatras and their planetary rulers.
Each planet rules a certain number of years:
Ketu (south node) is 7 years
Venus is 20 years
Sun is 6 years
Moon is 10 years
Mars is 7 years
Rahu (north node) is 18 years
Jupiter is 16 years
Saturn is 19 years
Mercury is 17 years
Whatever nakshatra the Moon is in, the ruling planet establishes first chapter of life.
When that chapter is up, it moves to the ruler of the next nakshatra, in zodiacal order.
Note that you must subtract a number of years proportional to how far through the first nakshatra the Moon is from the first period.

22 Feb 2019 | Reincarnation and Astrology, with Steven Forrest
Episode 194 features an interview with Steven Forrest about the concept of reincarnation, and the question of whether astrology can be used to find information about past lives.
Steven is one of the founders of a popular approach to astrology in modern times called Evolutionary Astrology, which holds karma and reincarnation as key principles.
In 2012 he published the book Yesterday's Sky: Astrology and Reincarnation, in which he talks about using the birth chart to identify themes in the present life that have their origins in previous lives the native has lived.
During the course of the episode we talk about Steven's background in astrology, his work with the nodes, and debates in the astrological community about reincarnation.

13 Mar 2019 | Uranus Transits Through the Twelve Houses | 01:57:52
Episode 197 features a panel of astrologers talking about the recent ingress of Uranus into Taurus, and helping to contextualize what that shift will mean for individuals by talking about it within the context of transits of Uranus through each of the twelve houses.
This is a recording from a meeting of the Denver Astrology Group that happened last Saturday, March 9, 2019. It was an experimental format where a panel of four astrologers led a discussion about the transit of Uranus through the houses, and audience members were encouraged to share stories about past Uranus transits they have experienced.
The panel featured astrologers Leisa Schaim, Eugenia Krok, Joy Vernon, and Chris Brennan.
Part of the motivation for the panel was that just a few days earlier on March 6, 2019, Uranus left Aries and moved into Taurus, where it will transit for the greater part of the next decade.
During the course of the meeting we went through each house in order, starting with the first house, and initially talked conceptually about what we would expect the transit of Uranus through that house to mean, and in some instances discussed different examples we had seen of it manifesting in different ways in the past.
Then we opened it up to the audience and asked if anyone had a good story about that transit, either in terms of how it had manifested for them when Uranus was transiting that house in the past, or how it has started to manifest already with Uranus starting to dip into Taurus over the past year.
This is partially under the premise that when you are using whole sign houses the shift of Uranus into a new sign also means that it is moving into a new house in your chart.
The end result was a pretty interesting and informative discussion, which should provide a useful starting point for each person who is trying to figure out what this nearly decade-long transit of Uranus will mean for them.

22 Mar 2019 | Sahl ibn Bishr: A New Translation by Benjamin Dykes | 01:57:47
Episode 198 features an interview with Benjamin Dykes about his new translation of the works of the 9th century astrologer Sahl ibn Bishr from Arabic.
Sahl was part of the second generation of astrologers who wrote in Arabic and worked in Baghdad during the early Islamic Caliphate.
He seems to have been active around 815–825 CE, and wrote what became some of the foundational works on Medieval astrology.
Ben just published a compilation of Sahl's works on natal, electional, and horary astrology titled The Astrology of Sahl B. Bishr, Vol. I: Principles, Elections, Questions, Nativities.
The centerpiece of this volume is a huge treatise on natal astrology, which contains some of the earliest and most extensive interpretations of the rulers of the houses when they are in different houses, as well as interpretations for different Lots or Arabic Parts.
Here is the full book description from Ben:
The influential medieval astrologer Sahl b. Bishr was at the center of Baghdad politics and conflict during key years of the ‘Abbasid Caliphate, in the early 800s. In this volume, leading astrological translator Benjamin Dykes presents six of his most important works, translated from the Arabic originals into English, including his major Book on Nativities for the first time. Texts here include the Introduction, The Fifty Aphorisms, On Questions, On Choices, On Times, On Nativities, and The 66 Sections. The Book on Nativities draws most heavily on the Persian al-Andarzaghar, with extensive passages from Dorotheus, Rhetorius, excerpts from Nawbakht the Persian, the Bizidaj, and others. Of special note are lengthy reproductions of Māshā’allāh’s Treatise on Lots, portions of a book on nativities, the lords of the houses in the houses, the lord of the Ascendant in combination with others, and more.
The book was just released for sale today on Amazon to coincide with this interview:
The Astrology of Sahl B. Bishr, Volume I on Amazon
(While Amazon currently says that it ships in 1 to 3 months, orders placed now should be shipped within the next week.)
Below you will find the episode notes, which contains an outline of some of the major points we touched on in the discussion, followed by links to listen to the recording.

Episode Notes
Here is an outline of some of the points touched on in this episode:
Ben’s first appearance on the podcast was on episode 2 back in 2012.
To promote his book on electional astrology titled Choices and Inceptions.
Ben has published 18 books over the past decade.
Largely translations from Latin, Arabic, and Greek.
He took Latin in high school, and started by translating Guido Bonatti.
His second book was Works of Sahl and Masha’allah in 2008.
Masha'allah and Sahl wrote in Arabic in the late 8th and early 9th centuries
Bio/times of Sahl and Masha’allah.
Sahl's period of activity was around 815–825 CE.
Sahl's connection to Buran of Baghdad through her father.
Their texts were later translated into Latin around the 12th century
Later astrologers like William Lilly in the 17th century drew on these Latin translations
Originally Ben translated Sahl and Masha’allah from the Latin versions.
In the early 2010s Ben decided to learn Arabic
Wanted to go back to the original texts.
First published Arabic translation was Dorotheus of Sidon
This is his second published translation from Arabic
It is a huge 800 page book
About the book
Compilation of several works of Sahl translated from Arabic
Separate texts on natal astrology, horary, elections, and more.
New translations of some works translated from Latin previously
Important because it turns out the Latin versions had changes made
The language is much richer in Arabic, and surprisingly close to the Greek
Chris was surprised at how well the Arabic terms matched the...

17 Apr 2019 | The Astrology Podcast 200th Episode Retrospective | 04:05:25
Astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim celebrate the 200th episode of The Astrology Podcast by talking about its history, looking back at some past episodes, and answering some meta questions about the podcast that were submitted by listeners.
Part of our goal was to provide a bit of an introduction to the podcast for those who have only found it relatively recently, and to highlight some groups of episodes that are important for new people and beginners to listen to, since it might be hard deciding which ones to start with now that there are 200 episodes.
I also wanted to provide some behind the scenes commentary and insight into the production of the show for longtime fans, and to talk candidly about different turning points in the history of the podcast, and how it has been tied in to my career as an astrologer over the past decade.
Eventually we answer some listener questions, and in the later part of the episode we go through and talk about some of the episodes that stand out to me the most, from the very earliest episodes to some of the more recent ones.
This was our first episode in the new recording studio, since we moved recently and got a place with a dedicated room for recording the podcast. So while part of this episode is about looking back at the past, we also spend some time talking about plans for the future.
Thank you to all of the listeners, fans, and patrons who made the podcast possible!

22 Apr 2019 | Astrologers Dating Astrologers: Advantages and Pitfalls | 02:39:09
In episode 201 astrologers Eugenia Krok and Tareck Adeeb join Leisa Schaim and Chris Brennan to talk about what it is like for an astrologer to be in a romantic relationship with another astrologer.
Eugenia is the host of the Accessible Astrology Podcast, and she and Tareck have been dating for two years, while Chris and Leisa have been together for about a decade.
We thought it would be fun to discuss some of the pros as well as some of the cons of being in a relationship with another astrologer, since it brings some unique advantages and challenges to the table.
Some of the issues we tried to address were how much should you pay attention to what the astrology is saying versus just dating, having a shared language or worldview, and what happens when you have different approaches to astrology.
We also tried to address what it is like for astrologers to be in relationships with non-astrologers, and some of the positive and difficult points associated with these partnerships as well.
We also answered some questions that were submitted by listeners.
This was our first time recording a four-person podcast in the new studio, so it was a bit of an experiment, but it ended up going really well!

28 Apr 2019 | How Did Pluto and the Outer Planets Get Their Meanings? | 01:57:59
In episode 202 astrologers Kenneth Miller and Sam Reynolds join Leisa Schaim and Chris Brennan in the studio to talk about the history behind Pluto's significations, as well as the meanings of the other outer planets in general.
This discussion is partially based on a paper that Kenneth wrote for the second volume of The Ascendant journal, titled "Pluto's Weird History: Dumb luck? Dumb note? Dumbbell?"
In the article Kenneth chronicles the development of Pluto's significations by astrologers after it was discovered in 1930, and the surprising lack of consistency until the mid-1970s.
This ended up being the basis for a sweeping discussion about how astrologers develop interpretive meanings for new celestial bodies, and some of the pros and cons for different approaches.
Sam and Kenneth were in town this week for a planning meeting with the rest of the board of the International Society for Astrological Research (ISAR), which is hosting their next astrology conference here in Denver in September of 2020.
We decided to take the opportunity while they were in town to meet up and get to the bottom of this whole outer planet issue.

17 May 2019 | The Master of the Nativity: Finding the Ruler of the Chart | 03:21:19
In episode 205 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim present a lecture on the ancient method of identifying the overall ruler of a birth chart, called the Master of the Nativity.
While in modern times astrologers tend to refer to the ruler of the Ascendant as the ruler of the chart, in ancient Greco-Roman astrology the method for determining the ruler of the chart was much more complex.
There are references to the master of the nativity in many of the surviving astrological texts from the Hellenistic astrology tradition, although there are not many surviving discussions about how to calculate it.
The approach that we present in this lecture is derived from chapter 30 of Porphyry's Introduction to the Tetrabiblos, which is itself derived from a lost work of definitions by Antiochus of Athens.
During the course of the lecture we talk about how to calculate the predominator (epikratētōr), the master of the nativity (oikodespotēs geneseōs), the co-master or joint master of the nativity (sunoikodespotēs), and the lord of the nativity (kurios).
We also discuss various questions such as the arguments for and against having one overall chart ruler, the use of the master of the nativity to identify the guardian spirit or daimōn by ancient astrologers and philosophers, and the use of this doctrine to identify more important placements in a chart.
This lecture was originally presented by Chris at the Northwest Astrological Conference in May of 2017, and then again at the United Astrology Conference in May of 2018. We decided to re-record the lecture for the podcast now in order to give a more careful and deliberate presentation of the material, a better recording, and in order to open up this research to a wider audience.

First I will outline the calculations for the different rulers of the nativity presented in this lecture, and then you will find the recordings available at the bottom of the page.
How to Calculate the Rulers of the Birth Chart According to Porphyry
Here are the rules for calculating the different rulers of the birth chart that we review in this podcast, based on chapter 30 of Porphyry's Introduction.
The Rulers of the Nativity
There are four different rulers of the nativity that are important to pay attention to:
Predominator (epikratētōr)
Master of the Nativity (oikodespotēs)
Co-Master or Joint Master of the Nativity (sunoikodespotēs)
Lord of the Nativity (kurios)
Predominator
In order to find the Master of the Nativity you must first find the Predominator, since the Predominator is the one who designates the Master. The Predominator is typically one of the luminaries, as long as they are well-placed. If they are not, then it defaults to the Ascendant.
Here are Porphyry’s considerations for determining if one of the luminaries can become Predominator:
The luminary that belongs to the sect of the chart is preferred (Sun day day, Moon by night).
The luminary that is more angular is preferred over one that is in a less angular house.
The one that is more eastern in the chart (towards the rising sign) is preferred.
g. if the Sun is in the 1st house in a day chart, Sun is the Predominator.
Sun in the 9th with the Moon in the 1st, then Moon is Predominator.
If both luminaries are in cadent houses, then the Ascendant becomes Predominator.
Master of the Nativity
According to Antiochus and Porphyry there are two variant traditions for calculating the Master:
The Master of the Nativity is the domicile lord of the Predominator.

21 May 2019 | Evangeline Adams and the Advent of Astrology in America | 02:39:44
In episode 206 Christopher Renstrom joins the show to talk about the work of the early 20th century astrologer Evangeline Adams, and the development and popularization of astrology in America.
In the first hour of this discussion we talk about the practice of astrology in America in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and the factors that led to its rise, including spiritualism and the Theosophical Society.
Eventually we get to our main topic, which is the life and work of the early 20th century astrologer Evangeline Adams, who the historian James Holden says was the most famous astrologer in America in the first third of the 20th century.
During the course of the episode we talk about the famous anti-fortunetelling court case that Adams was involved in in 1914, her work with Aleister Crowley as a ghost writer for some of her books, and eventually how she reached the height of her popularity with a syndicated radio show in the early 1930s.
Most of the research behind this episode is based on a book by Karen Christino titled Foreseeing the Future: Evangeline Adams and Astrology in America, which was originally published in 2003, and released in a revised edition earlier this year.
Karen was not available to do an interview, but she suggested that I talk with Christopher, who has done a lot of research on the development of astrology in America.
Christopher recently gave a great lecture titled Trash Astrology: A History of Pop Astrology in America, which chronicles the popularization of astrology in the United States.
This episode forms a nice followup to a few previous episodes, such as The Modern Revival of Astrology, with Nick Campion, and Elsbeth Ebertin and the Rise of Women in Astrology. Check out those episodes if you would like to explore some of the themes in this one further.

04 Jun 2019 | Live Astrology Q&A Session at NORWAC 2019 | 02:03:46
In episode 208 astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan answer questions about astrology from listeners in front of a live audience at the 35th annual Northwest Astrological Conference in Seattle, Washington on May 23, 2019.
The Q&A session was recorded in front of a live audience of listeners, who flew in to Seattle to join us for the event the day before the conference officially began.
Listeners of the podcast sent in questions in the weeks leading up to the event, and we selected some of the best ones to answer and discuss during the Q&A session.
Some of the questions were submitted via Twitter, while others came from our channel on YouTube, and still others were sent in via email.
We received a lot of good questions, and while we weren't able to get to all of them, we did a pretty good job of tackling as many as we could in the two hours that we had that night.
We also did a recap of #NORWAC2019 in the first hour of the astrology forecast episode for June 2019 that we recorded immediately after we returned from the conference, if you want to hear more about it.
Below will be a list of some of the questions we answered in this episode, followed by links to download the recording at the bottom of the page.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions. Thanks to Cam White for helping to set up and record this event, and also to Stephen Coppock for editing the footage.

22 Jun 2019 | Alan Leo and Early Modern Astrology, with Kim Farnell | 01:31:06
Episode 209 features an interview with Kim Farnell about her new book titled Modern Astrologers: The Lives of Alan and Bessie Leo.
Alan Leo (1860–1917) is often credited with helping to spur the revival and popularization of astrology in the west in the early 20th century, through his efforts to publish magazines, horoscopes, and books.
In 1915 Alan and his wife Bessie Leo (1858–1931) founded the Astrological Lodge of London, which still holds weekly astrology meetings in London every Monday.
Kim has been the President of the Lodge since 2008, and we met in the research library of the Theosophical Society to conduct this interview on June 12, 2019.
During the course of the interview we discussed how Alan and Bessie got into astrology, their efforts to promote the subject, and their impact on the field.
Kim's book provides a detailed and insightful account of the practice of astrology around the turn of the 20th century, and I'd highly recommend checking it out.
The book is available through Amazon:

27 Jun 2019 | On Psychological Astrology, with John Green | 01:19:32
Episode 210 of the podcast features an interview with astrologer John Green about psychological astrology, and some of the unique and valuable contributions it has made the contemporary practice of astrology over the past few decades.
John is the director of the Mercury Internet School of Psychological Astrology (MISPA), which offers a diploma course that combines astrology with depth, humanistic, and transpersonal psychology.
He originally studied with and became a tutor at the Centre for Psychological Astrology (CPA), which was founded by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas in the 1980s, and his school represents a continuation of that lineage.
This interview was motivated by a discussion that John and I had about the recent revival of older forms of astrology, and how they might be synthesized with some of the some of the contemporary approaches to astrology that developed in modern times.
The main questions we tried to address in this interview were 1) to articulate what psychological astrology is, and 2) to talk about some of the important and valuable things it has to contribute to any future synthesis of the various astrological traditions.
While some of this may be review for those who have been in the astrological community for the past few decades, it may be useful for newer students of astrology who are just coming into field now, and don't necessarily know what they might be missing if they only study traditional forms of astrology.
In some ways this episode represents the continuation of a series over the past few years that has documented the emergence of modern astrology in the 20th century through figures such as Alan Leo, Evangeline Adams, Carl Jung, and Dane Rudhyar. This episode brings that series closer to completion by talking about some developments that occurred towards the end of the 20th century.
This interview was conducted in-person on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, in the research library of the Theosophical Society in London, towards the end of my trip to the UK to attend the 51st Annual Conference of the Astrological Association of Great Britain.
For more more information about John, see his website PsychologicalAstrology.com.
He is also the author of the book Do You Love Me? The Astrology of Relationships, which was the subject of episode 165, titled Synastry: The Astrology of Relationships.

04 Jul 2019 | Clive Kavan: Publishing the Regulus Edition of William Lilly | 01:05:35
Episode 212 features an interview with Clive Kavan about how he published the 1985 Regulus edition of William Lilly's book Christian Astrology, which helped to spur the revival of traditional astrology in modern times.
Lilly's book Christian Astrology was originally published in 1647, and it was the first major textbook astrology written in English, because prior to that time most astrological texts were written in Latin.
Lilly himself drew on a wide variety of different Hellenistic, Medieval, and Renaissance sources, and his book became very influential to subsequent generations of astrologers in the English-speaking world.
The book was not widely available in its original form for most of the 20th century though, and that is why the publication of the Regulus edition of Lilly in 1985 was important.
The Regulus edition made the earliest English-language textbook on astrology widely available again, helped re-popularize the practice of horary astrology, and also eventually helped contribute to a wider revival of interest in older or more traditional forms of astrology that has expanded even more in recent years.
For more background information on the impact of the Regulus edition of Lilly, see my previous episode with Lee Lehman on horary astrology, as well as my later episode on the astrologer William Lilly and his book Christian Astrology .
I met Clive by chance at a pub the first night I flew into London, where a group of astrologers were hanging out after the Monday night meeting of the Astrological Lodge. Someone told me that he had published the Regulus edition of Lilly, and after asking him some questions about how that came about, I knew I had to get this interview with him to capture some of this important history.
The interview was conducted on June 18, 2019 in the research library at the Theosophical Lodge of London, where the Astrological Lodge of London meets each week since 1915.
Clive brought some original documents to the meeting that day, including a first edition of Lilly, which I will post some pictures of in a gallery below.

13 Jul 2019 | Interviews with Astrologers from Romania and England | 01:00:04
Episode 213 features a few short interviews that I did with different astrologers that I met in Romania and the England while I was traveling through Europe last month to attend two astrology conferences.
The first interview is with astrologers Oli Andrei Olar and Lelia V from Romania, the second interview is with Carmina Amza from Romania, and the third interview is with Israel Ajose from London.
I also recorded some longer interviews with other astrologers that were directed towards specific topics, which I've been releasing slowly in other episodes since I got back home, but these shorter interviews were meant to be briefer discussions just to showcase some of the cool people I met during my travels.
The interviews range from 14 to 24 minutes in length, and are available in both audio and video versions below.
Since I originally only intended to release them as video interviews, I'm going to post each video as a separate link below, but then in the audio version I will string all three of them together to form a single episode.
Oli Andrei Olar and Lelia V from Romania
Oli and Lelia were two cool younger astrologers I met in Romania who were listeners of the podcast. We had some drinks together one night early on, and I had a really good time hanging out with them. Oli is into Evolutionary Astrology, and Lelia talks a bit about the status of astrology among the younger generations in Romania.

This interview was conducted on Sunday, June 9, 2019, in Craiova, Romania, on the last day of the astrology conference that was hosted by the Romanian Astrologers Association.

Carmina Amza from Romania
Carmina is someone I was already familiar with before I went to Romania because I subscribe to her YouTube channel. She practices tropical Vedic astrology, as well as card reading and Human Design. She helped me translate two longer interviews I did with the founders of the Romanian Astrologers Association that day, which I will release separately as a full episode later this month. We traded interviews that day, and she also recorded an interview with me that was released on her channel recently.

Israel Ajose from London
Israel Ajose was one of my favorite people I got to hang out with on my trip to the UK. He is the Vice President of the Astrological Lodge of London, which holds meetings with lectures and classes there every Monday. We sat down on a Monday shortly before one of the Lodge meetings where I gave a talk, and we had a little discussion about the Lodge and what it is like organizing a local astrology group in London.

17 Jul 2019 | The Increasing Frequency of Caesarean Section Births | 01:14:27
Episode 214 features an interview with astrologer Wendy Stacey about the increasing frequency of caesarean births, and the implications this has for natal astrology.
Wendy is the Chair of the Astrological Association of Great Britain, and Principal of the Mayo School of Astrology.
She did an MA degree at Bath Spa University College in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology, with a thesis that focused on the medicalisation of childbirth and changing birth time patterns.
The crux of the issue is that it is becoming more and more common for doctors to recommend that births are induced, especially using c-sections, and these are usually scheduled ahead of time during normal business hours.
This is having the unintended side-effect of leading to greater conformity in when people are born, so that it is happening Monday through Friday, during daytime hours.
This has some potentially startling implications for astrology, in term of having certain placements show up much more frequently, and other placements less frequently.
You can read more about Wendy's research in an article that she wrote for the Astrological Association's Astrological Journal in 2010 titled Pearls of Tomorrow: Birth Intervention and the Astrological Face of the New Generation.

21 Jul 2019 | Interpreting Solar and Lunar Eclipses in Your Birth Chart | 02:13:18
Episode 215 features a recording of a live workshop where astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim demonstrate how to interpret the astrological significance of eclipses, based on the houses in which they fall in your birth chart.
This is a recording of a meeting of the Denver Astrology Group that was held on Saturday, July 13, 2019, starting just after 3:00 PM, at the Mercury Cafe in downtown Denver.
For the first 30 minutes or so of the meeting we talked in general about the astrological significance of solar and lunar eclipses, and what they mean symbolically in astrology.
Eventually we transitioned into talking about how to determine what specific eclipses will mean for individuals based on which of the 12 houses they fall in in your birth chart.
During the course of the meeting we took examples from the audience, and audience members shared stories about how past eclipses have worked out in their lives, which helped to clarify how eclipses work in a very practical way.
We focused in particular on how eclipses come in pairs, and highlight a specific axis of houses for about two years. For example, the 1st house/7th house axis, or the 2nd house/8th house axis and so on.
This meeting was timely because it fell in between a solar eclipse in Cancer and a lunar eclipse in Capricorn.
We made a special handout which lists all of the eclipse dates from 1950 through 2030:
Solar and Lunar Eclipse Dates List (PDF)
If you have a good story that you want to share about how an eclipse has worked out for you in the past, please post it in the comments section below!

04 Aug 2019 | Organizing Astrology Conferences, with Ray Merriman | 01:53:54
Episode 217 features an interview with astrologer Ray Merriman about what is involved in organizing a major astrology conference.
Ray specializes in financial astrology, and is the former President of the International Society for Astrological Research (ISAR).
He has organized more than 20 astrology conferences over the course of his career, and is in the process of helping to organize his final conference now, which is the ISAR astrology conference that will be held in Denver in September of 2020:
https://isarastrology.org/conference/
Ray was passing through Denver last month to finalize some things with the conference hotel, and I thought that this would be a good opportunity to interview him, to talk about all of the different things that go into putting together a conference.
We ended up talking about a range of topics, including speaker selection, how to apply to speak at a conference, and how astrology conferences have changed over the past few decades.

09 Aug 2019 | Abu Ma’shar on Solar Returns, with Benjamin Dykes | 01:52:38
Episode 218 features an interview with Dr. Benjamin Dykes about his new translation of a highly influential book on solar returns by the 9th century astrologer Abu Ma'shar.
The title of the book is Persian Nativities IV: On the Revolutions of the Years of Nativities.
Abu Ma'shar (d. 886 CE) was one of the most prolific and influential early Medieval astrologers who wrote in Arabic, living in Baghdad in the middle of the 9th century.
He wrote one of the most famous and comprehensive works on solar returns, titled On the Revolutions of the Years of Nativities.
Portions of this book were translated from Arabic into Latin in the 12th century, which then influenced many subsequent generations of astrologers in the west.
In 2010 Ben translated the Latin version of Abu Ma'shar's book on solar returns and published it as Persian Nativities III.
Now he has gone back and translated the entirety of the original Arabic text, which not only contains a lot of material that was missing in the Latin version, but the meaning of the text is much richer and more nuanced because the translation is from the original language.
The book was just released today, on August 9, 2019, to coincide with the release of this interview, and you can buy it on Amazon:
Abu Ma'shar, On the Revolutions of the Years of Nativities
During the course of the interview we talk about who Abu Ma'shar was, why he thought that calculating solar return charts was important, and some of the specific things that he recommended looking at when trying to interpret a solar return.

28 Aug 2019 | The Recent Revival of Astrology in Romania | 01:05:08
Episode 219 features two interviews with astrologers Firicel Ciarnau and Mihaela Dicu about the revival of astrology in Romania over the past 30 years after a period of suppression.
I traveled to Romania from June 6–10, 2019, to attend and speak at a conference that was hosted by the Romanian Astrologers Association.
On June 9 I conducted several interviews, and I already released the ones I did with some younger astrologers in episode 213 of the podcast.
I also had the opportunity to conduct two longer interviews with the founders of the organization, astrologers Firicel Ciarnau and Mihaela Dicu.
One of the things I learned about during my trip was the recent revival of astrology in Romania.
While there were a few astrology books published in Romanian in the early 20th century, around the time astrology was being revived in other western countries, this came to an abrupt halt when Romania was taken over by the communists after World War II.
The Soviet Union promoted atheism, and religion was prohibited. Astrology became outlawed in countries that were under Soviet control or influence, because it was seen as divination, superstition, or pseudoscience.
The suppression of astrology in Romania was particularly extreme, and not only the practicing of the subject was outlawed, but astrology books were confiscated and burned.
Despite this, some astrologers, such as Firicel and Mihaela began learning the subject in secret.
In 1989 the revolution occurred, and the communist regime was overthrown. Suddenly astrology was permissible again, and could be studied and practiced publicly.
Mihaela Dicu and Firicel Ciarnau were part of the first generation of astrologers who were able to practice astrology freely, and they helped to promote the revival of astrology in Romania after the revolution.
Firicel focused on making astrology a recognized occupation by the government, and both of them helped to found the Romanian Astrologers Association in 2004, which holds two conferences each year.
I wanted to interview both of them to help document some of this recent history.
Astrology goes through phases of acceptableness in society, and suppression of it happens from time to time, so it is important to remember and recognize those who help it to survive through hard times.
Thank you to Carmina-Adelina Amza for helping to translate the interviews live the day they were recorded, on June 9, 2019 in Craiova, Romania, and also for later making the transcripts and captioning.
Also thanks to Adrian Tarcan for help recording the audio versions of this episode.
Finally, thanks to the Romanian Astrologers Association for hosting me on my trip to Romania. It was an amazing experience, and I look forward to returning again someday.

The audio version is a recording of two people reading the translated transcript of the interviews in English, while the video version contains the original Romanian interview in the audio along with translated captions in English. 14 Sep 2019 | William Lilly and His Book Christian Astrology | 01:53:22
Episode 221 of the podcast features an interview with Nina Gryphon about the famous 17th century astrologer William Lilly and his book Christian Astrology.
Lilly published Christian Astrology in 1647, and it was the first major textbook on astrology that was written in English. Most western astrological texts were written in Latin up until that point in history.
The book has had a deep and enduring impact on astrology in the west over the past few centuries since it was published, and Lilly is usually regarded as one of the most influential figures in the western astrological tradition.
Nina has been studying Lilly's work for the past two decades, and in this episode we provide a detailed overview of his life and work.
For more information about Nina check out her website NinaGryphon.com
This episode is available in both audio and video versions. You will find links to each at the bottom of the page, just after the episode outline and gallery.
Episode Outline and Show Notes
Here is an outline of the main points we touched on in this episode. This is an edited version of our show notes, which Chris and Nina collaborated on before recording the episode.
William Lilly (1602-1681).
One of the most prominent and influential astrologers of the 17th century.
Worked as a practicing and consulting astrologer in London most of his adult life.
Doing many consultations per day, for rich and poor, as evidenced by casebooks.
Wrote the first major English language textbook on astrology.
Christian Astrology was first published in 1647.
Important because in England prior to this, astrological literature was in Latin.
Inaccessible to all but a small minority with a classical education.
Only prior English text was a short treatise on medical astrology.
Miscellaneous almanacs or predictive texts.
Inspired a number of key astrological writers to write in English:
Nicolas Culpeper, John Gadbury, William Ramesey, Joseph Blagrave, etc.
Also translated Anima Astrologiae: A Guide for Astrologers (1676).
Excerpts from Guido Bonattti and Gerolamo Cardano.
Discussed with Nina previously in episode 108 on Bonatti's considerations.
Continued to be highly influential after his death, in various forms.
Was involved in publishing almanacs; publishing 36 (1647–1682).
He was easily the best-selling almanac writer of his time in England.
Selling more than 30,000 almanacs each year.
Almanacs contained weather predictions, political predictions for England and elsewhere, and some astrological text for instruction.
Perhaps his most famous prediction was that of the Great Fire of London of 1666.
Was involved in the politics of his day.
Strongly pro-parliament/anti-monarchist, though consulted with powerful people in both camps, going as far as advising Jane Whorwood, one of the King’s confidants, in helping the King make his escape from the locations where held by Parliamentary forces (King did not listen).
Employed as propagandist via his almanacs, leaflets, and other publications, in an astrological context.
Always a question of how much he honestly saw astrologically, and how much was propaganda favoring the Parliament’s cause.
Christian Astrology: scope and contents
Divided into three books.
Book 1: Basics of astrology
Book 2: Horary astrology questions
Book 3: Natal astrology
Teaches horary before natal.
Stronger for horary than natal?
Brings together a bunch of different sources that were available to him.
Extensive bibliography included in Christian Astrology, reflecting his own sizeable astrology library, as well as that of others.
Bibliography notable for including virtually all books printed in Europe before 1640.
After his death, library, casebooks, portrait were bought by Elias Ashmole for 50 pounds, and was incorporated into the Ashmolean Museum collection at ...
20 Sep 2019 | Reading Birth Charts with Annual Profections | 02:07:15
In episode 222 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim lead a discussion about annual profections with a local astrology group, and take example charts from the audience to demonstrate how the timing technique works in practice.
This episode is a recording of a meeting of the Denver Astrology Group that took place at the Mercury Cafe in downtown Denver, Colorado on Saturday, September 14, 2019, starting just after 3:00 PM.
This is a followup to episode 153 of The Astrology Podcast where Chris gave an introductory lecture on the annual profections timing technique.
This episode begins with a brief introduction to annual profections and review of some of the basic principles of the technique, and then we quickly transitioned into asking audience members to look through their own chronology and see if they could find any good examples that demonstrated the technique in their own lives.
In the end we had seven different audience members share their birth charts and talk about specific years in their life, explaining how the technique correlated with their lived experience.
This style of discussion can be important because sometimes it is only by talking to a person directly about their life and asking them questions that you can get a full sense of exactly how the techniques of astrology work out in practice.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions below.
Annual Profections Handouts
Here are the printable handouts given to the audience for this episode:
Annual Profections Wheel
Annual Profections Worksheet
Significations of the Houses
All three of these are printable PDF files that you can download.
Audience Chart Examples
For listeners of the audio version, here are the seven chart examples that were shared by audience members in this episode, in the order in which they appeared in the discussion:
Joseph
Annie
Valerie
Kathy
Drew
Ann
Lynette
Each chart is cast using whole sign houses, the tropical zodiac, and the traditional rulership scheme.

04 Oct 2019 | Helena Avelar and Luís Ribeiro on Traditional Astrology | 03:08:38
Episode 225 features an interview with Helena Avelar and Luís Ribeiro about their work on traditional astrology, and their two books on the subject.
Helena and Luís live in Portugal, and are the authors of the 2010 book On the Heavenly Spheres: A Treatise on Traditional Astrology, which is a comprehensive introduction to traditional, pre-20th century forms of astrology.
This was one of the first really good introductory books that came out after the revival of traditional forms of astrology over the past 30 years, and I recommend it on my list of the best astrology books for beginners.
They recently released a second book titled Traditional Astrology Course: Essential Concepts and Interpretation Basics, which acts as a companion volume to their first book, and helps to supplement and expand on some of the concepts.
During the course of the interview we talk about how Helena and Luís got into traditional astrology, some of the philosophy behind it, and discuss what went in to writing the books.
We also discuss some of the academic work they have been doing on the history of astrology over the past decade, and their recent PhD dissertations on the subject.
You can find out more information about Helena and Luis on their website:
AcademiaDeAstrologia.com
This episode is available in both audio and video versions below.
The Tradition Journal
Helena and Luís edited a journal on traditional astrology from 2008–2010 called The Tradition: Journal of Western Predictive Astrology.
The website for the journal has been discontinued, and their own website is currently under construction, but they gave me permission to re-post the four issues of the journal that they produced here.
The Tradition journal - Volume 1
The Tradition journal - Volume 2
The Tradition journal - Volume 3
The Tradition journal - Volume 4
These issues are a goldmine for work on traditional astrology, and I thought it would be good to share them here to help familiarize newer students with some of the work that Helena and Luís have done.

08 Oct 2019 | Is Astrology Antithetical to Christianity? | 02:10:22
In episode 226 astrologer Nate Craddock joins the show to discuss the early history of Christianity and its relationship with astrology.
Specifically, we focus on the question of whether astrology is somehow inherently antithetical to Christianity, especially in terms of the origins of the religion during the time of the Roman Empire.
Nate is a practicing astrologer, as well as an ordained Christian priest with a degree in divinity. You can find out more information about his work on his website:
SoulFriendAstrology.com
The jumping off point for our discussion was the work of a scholar named Nicola Denzey Lewis, and her 2013 book Cosmology and Fate in Gnosticism and Graeco-Roman Antiquity. Part of the purpose of the book is demonstrating how a number of influential early Christian texts framed the religion as a way to liberate yourself from astrology and fate.
Astrology in the 1st century CE tended to be more deterministic and influenced by Stoic conceptualizations of fate, and to some extent Christianity may represent one of many religious or philosophical groups in the ancient world that offered an alternative, which may then explain part of its initial appeal to everyday individuals in the Roman Empire.
This then set up a sort of oppositional relationship between astrology and mainstream Christianity for a number of centuries, although it raises the question for us today of whether the two are inherently incompatible, or if there are ways that they can be reconciled?
Nate's answer to this question is emphatically "yes, they can be reconciled", and during the course of the discussion we ended up covering a lot of ground, and exploring a number of different historical and theological areas.
This episode represents an important followup to earlier episodes of the podcast discussing responses to religious criticisms of astrology, the role of astrology in the story of the Star of Bethlehem, as well as a brief digression about the purpose of finding the guardian spirit about 2 hours into the episode on finding the overall ruler of the birth chart.
For those who enjoy this discussion, you would also like Nate's podcast Jailbreak the Sacred.

28 Oct 2019 | Origins of the House Division Debate in Ancient Astrology | 03:48:51
Episode 227 of the podcast is a lecture by Chris Brennan on the origins of the house division debate in ancient astrology, where I present my reconstruction of how the different approaches to house division came about in the Hellenistic tradition 2000 years ago.
The premise of the discussion is that we know as modern astrologers that there are many different forms of house division today, but how did this come to be the case? We can understand the issue better by going back to the beginning of the tradition and seeing how it started, and this may also provide us with some tools for resolving the problem today.
In this talk I try to answer some questions such as:
Which systems of house division were used in antiquity?
Were some approaches to house division more popular than others?
How did ancient astrologers reconcile different approaches to house division?
This episode partially results from a series of debates and discussions that have occurred over the past few years regarding the issue of house division in ancient astrology, beginning with episode 52 titled Whole Sign Houses: The Best System of House Division, which was then followed by episode 54 with Deborah Houlding titled The Debate About Ancient Systems of House Division. The debate with Houlding then prompted Robert Schmidt to release his own audio recording on the house division issue in June of 2016.
In the summer of 2016 I was in the process of finishing my book on ancient astrology, and I ended up writing a longer and more detailed treatment of the house division issue than I originally intended, which became chapter 11 of my book Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune.
I subsequently presented a summarized version of that chapter in two lectures, first at the Northwest Astrology Conference in Seattle in May of 2017, and then at the United Astrology Conference in Chicago in May of 2018.
This podcast is a slightly expanded version of the same lecture, which is essentially a summary of chapter 11 of my book. For those that are interested in going further into this topic, I would highly recommend reading that chapter of my book, since I was able to go into more detail and give more references in writing than I could in this lecture.
My goal in releasing this lecture is that, together with the chapter I wrote on the subject in my book, this fully outlines my current understanding of how the house division issue developed, as well as much of the evidence that those views are based on.
My hope is that this will help to set a new foundation for some of the discussions about house division in the future, and perhaps suggest some possible paths forward for reconciling the different approaches.

30 Oct 2019 | November 2019 Astrology Forecast: Last of Jupiter in Sag | 02:30:03
Episode 228 features astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan talking about the astrological forecast for November of 2019, which is the last full month of Jupiter transiting through Sagittarius.
November also features Mercury retrograde in Scorpio most of the month, an exact Saturn-Neptune sextile, and lunations in Taurus and Sagittarius.
We decided to switch things up this month and do the forecast portion of the episode first, and then some other miscellaneous discussion topics on astrology later. That way people who only want to listen to the forecast can just listen to the first part of the episode and not need to search for time stamps.
After the forecast we talk about Austin and Kelly's upcoming trip to Denver to record some episodes in person, Chris' realization that the word "antithesis" is an almost perfect translation of the Greek word that was originally used to refer to what later became known as the sign of a planet's "detriment", what signifies the mind, and whether we are living in a simulated reality.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions below.

07 Nov 2019 | Practicing Astrology Before Your Saturn Return | 02:10:13
In episode 229 of the podcast, astrologers Leisa Schaim and Chris Brennan discuss whether age is a relevant prerequisite for practicing astrology, and if it is ok to read charts for clients prior to your Saturn return.
The premise of the discussion is that a debate comes up occasionally in the astrological community over how old a person should be to do consultations. Usually astrologers start off by reading charts for friends and family members for free early in their studies, and then eventually the process of starting to charge for astrological readings is seen as a major step or transition point in one's path as an astrologer.
Since astrology is a largely unregulated field, each astrologer ultimately has to decide on their own when they are ready to start seeing clients. When this topic is discussed among professionals, lots of different criteria are usually suggested for determining when a person is “ready”, and occasionally age is put forward as a potential piece of criteria or a requirement for practicing.
This piece of criteria is then sometimes proposed as a sort of rule or prohibition: that astrologers shouldn’t see clients either until they have reached or potentially only after they have completed their Saturn return, which occurs between the ages of 27 and 30.
While this rule is not generally accepted in the astrological community, as a proposal it sometimes elicits strong reactions from younger astrologers, since it would essentially mean that astrologers can’t or shouldn't do consultations until their 30s.
A debate about this recently broke out on Twitter, and the goal of this episode was to talk about the general topic, without necessarily focusing on the recent debate itself. It is an interesting topic that comes up in the community from time to time, and in some ways it has become more relevant again recently after the large influx of younger astrologers into the community over the past few years.
As a former 20-something astrologer and past President of the Association for Young Astrologers, Chris has a strong opinion that astrologers should be able to practice astrology in their 20s, although the goal with this discussion was to try to explore and present some of the pros and cons on both sides of the issue.

19 Nov 2019 | Relationship Astrology for Modern Times, with Jessica Lanyadoo | 02:41:34
In episode 230 astrologer Jessica Lanyadoo joins the podcast to talk about astrology and relationships, and some of the work she has done in adapting the subject to the realities and sensibilities of modern times.
Jessica is the host of the popular Ghost of a Podcast, and is the author of the forthcoming book Astrology for Real Relationships: Understanding You, Me, and How We All Get Along.
In the first part of the show we sat down to talk about her new book, and to address the question of if astrology is always a reflection of the culture, social sensibilities, and time period in which it is practiced, then in what ways did astrology need to change recently in order to adapt to the sensibilities of practitioners living in modern western times?
Later in the show we answer some questions about astrology and relationships that were sent in by listeners.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions below.
Relationship Astrology Questions
Here are some of the questions we answered from listeners, most of which came from Twitter:
Catherine Urban (@AstroCatherine): Sometimes couples think it would be fun to get a reading together. Thoughts?
Diana Rose (@ddamascenaa): WHEN is it actually beneficial to look at a beloved's birth chart, synastry, composite, etc.? I feel like a lot of people will pre-emptively investigate these things -- like before the first date -- and end up making wildly incorrect assumptions before they've even met.
Advice Astrologer (@AdvAstrologer): I would love to know what you guys prefer to use (Davison or composite) and why. I'm [also] curious about what you all think of, "twin flames," …
Richelle Steyn (@roshbon): How to identify and navigate ‘soul mates’ and karmic relationships.
Rob Bailey (@oldschoolastro): How do you feel about the concept of “sister signs” as it pertains to relationship astrology or synastry?
Allyse (@ayyy_lease): What is the biggest mistake most people make with relationship astrology? What are the common place myths that too many people fall for?
MagicalForge (@OfHadad): Manifestations of relationship inequities in "knowing someone" when an astrologer/student studies the chart of a potential partner before they form a deep relationship.
(@astrogrIz): I would love to hear more about relationships in astrology specifically looking at queer relationships! This is more of a topic than a question but I hope they are able to touch a bit on it
Ash Bash (@astro_ashley11): Marriage elections!
721 (@ayanatheoracle): Could you talk about the history of whoever decided that astrological compatibility was strictly based on the element of the sun sign
chelsea (@aeslehcothtrae): i’m curious about what is in store for those folks entering their saturn return single, in regards to relationships! should we avoid dating? or do you have any tips/suggestions for dating during your saturn return?

27 Nov 2019 | Significations of the Twelve Houses – Part 1: Houses 1–6 | 03:45:35
In episode 231 astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan begin the first of a two part series on the meanings of the twelve houses, starting with houses 1 through 6.
At the beginning of the episode we review some basic conceptual structures that are necessary for understanding how the houses got their meanings, such as the concepts of angularity, good and bad houses, and the planetary joys.
After that beginning material is out of the way, we begin by talking about the first house and what it means within the context of natal astrology, followed by the rest of the houses in zodiacal order.
We don't really deal with the issue of house division much in this episode, since that was covered partially in a recent episode on the origins of the different forms of house division in astrology.
This is the first of a two part series, and the rest of the houses will be dealt with in part 2 on houses 7 through 12, which should be released sometime next month. Patrons of the podcast will get early access to the episode, among other benefits.
This is a followup to our previous episodes on other foundational concepts in astrology, where we talked about the significations of the seven traditional planets, and the meanings of the zodiac signs.
This was the first episode that we recorded when we got together in Denver last week to record a bunch of episodes in person in our studio. The rest of the episodes will be released slowly over the course of the next month.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions below.
Meanings of the First Six Houses
Here are some of the significations of the first six houses we touch on in this episode:

01 Dec 2019 | December 2019 Astrology Forecast: Jupiter in Capricorn | 02:40:35
In episode 232 astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan meet up in the studio to give an overview of the astrological forecast for December of 2019, which features Jupiter moving into Capricorn at the start of a one year transit through that sign.
This month's forecast also features a solar eclipse in Capricorn, a Venus-Saturn-Pluto conjunction, and a comparatively light Full Moon in Gemini.
This episode was record in person in our studio in Denver, during Austin and Kelly's week long trip around the third week of November.
Our experiment last month worked out so well with doing the forecast segment first and then the discussion later that we decided to make that a permanent thing from now on.
In the first part of the episode we focus on the astrological forecast for December, then there is a break and Leisa Schaim joins us to talk about this month's auspicious electional chart, and then after that we transition into some casual discussion topics.
The main discussion topic we focused on at the end was how old Kelly and Austin were when they first started doing consultations, and whether they think that an aspiring astrologer should wait until their Saturn return, which was a controversial discussion topic that we covered earlier this month in episode 229 titled Practicing Astrology Before Your Saturn Return.
This episode was recorded with a live audience of patrons who joined us through our monthly webinar format, which is one of the benefits of supporting the production of the show through The Astrology Podcast page on Patreon.

06 Dec 2019 | Significations of the Twelve Houses – Part 2: Houses 7–12 | 03:23:08
In episode 233 astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan get back together in the studio for the second of our two part series on the significations of the houses, this time focusing on the meanings of houses 7 through 12.
In part 1 of our series on the significations of the twelve houses in astrology we spent a lot of time in the beginning talking about different conceptual structures underlying the meanings of the houses, whereas in this episode we just jump right in to talking about the 7th house.
At the beginning we talk a little bit about the more public nature of the houses in the upper hemisphere, as well as how the interrelationship between opposing houses starts becoming more clear from the 7th house forward.
Some of the core significations we talk about for each of the houses:
7th house: relationships, partnership, marriage, the "other" (as opposed to "self")
8th house: death, inheritance, assets of others, partner's finances
9th house: travel, foreign things, education, religion
10th house: career, actions, reputation, public life
11th house: friends, groups, alliances, hopes
12th house: enemies, sickness, loss, seclusion

22 Dec 2019 | The Relationship Between Astrology and Magic | 03:09:22
In episode 235 astrologers Austin Coppock and Chris Brennan discuss the relationship between astrology and magic, and some of the areas where they converge and diverge.
The premise behind this discussion is that there has been a dramatic rise in the practice of astrological magic over the past couple of years, especially among the younger generations of astrologers.
This has left some astrologers like myself in a bit of an awkward position though, since I don't practice magic, and having not investigated it much myself I don't really have strong feelings either for or against it.
I do feel like I have indirectly promoted it on The Astrology Podcast though by having discussions about it with different practitioners that are into it, as part of my general program to recognize and talk about the many different approaches to and perspectives on astrology.
Some past instances include my early interview with Christopher Warnock in episode 16 about Astrology, Magic, and The Occult, or the discussion that I had with Austin about his new compilation of papers on astrological magic when it came out in 2018.
I don't necessarily think that one needs to believe in or practice magic in order to practice astrology though, since the two are kind of separate things, and yet I wondered if that distinction has become blurred a bit over the past few years.
In light of that, I'd been meaning to do an episode where I could talk through some of my own reservations, while balancing them out by talking to a proponent of astrological magic. I couldn't think of anyone better to have that discussion with than Austin, since he has become one of the principal proponents of astrological magic in modern times.
This episode was recorded in my studio in Denver in late November, towards the end of Austin and Kelly's trip here that month to record a series of podcast episodes.
When I pitched the idea to Austin early during his visit he was enthusiastic about doing the episode, and felt like it might be good to be able to talk about some of his own reservations regarding the sudden recent popularization of astrological magic as well.
So, we decided to sit down and record it on our day off on the Sunday that week when Kelly was off in Boulder giving a workshop. The end result was a pretty compelling and I think productive discussion, where we covered a lot of ground. Some of the topics we covered include:
What is the definition of astrology?
How do we define magic?
Is astrology magic?
In what ways are astrology and magic different?
How has magic been incorporated into astrology in the past?
Are there any possible downsides to astrological magic today?
What are the possible benefits?
What is the interplay between fate and free-will?
Part of the purpose of the episode for me was to be able to explain where I'm at currently and air any reservations I have while talking through it with someone I respect, and then having done so I can feel better about going ahead and still doing other explorations of that topic on the podcast in the future, such as an episode on the Picatrix that I'm planning on doing with Christopher Warnock next month. I feel like I was able to do that with this episode, and I hope that it generates some other productive discussions in the future.

What was the role of transits in ancient astrology? And how do each of you employ transits in your current practise, in contrast to other predictive techniques?
From Cat @occultproblems via Twitter
What do you think your role is as a group of astrologers who are now a tier older than the youngest generation of professional astrologers? Like, what is the role of mentorship and role modeling in the community, and what are your favorite ways to enact that? What would you like to see more of?
From @theblogwitch via Twitter
What are y’all’s hopes/fears for the coming year(s) re: astrology? are there certain discussions or conversations you can see needing to happen within the community as a whole? are there any upcoming configurations that bode positively/negatively for the rise of astrology?
From Martina Segovia on the Astrology Podcast Patreon Facebook group
I’m looking to start a local IRL astrology group; any tips to help it be successful?
From @adinahertzel via Twitter
How do you maintain and honor your boundaries/the privacy of others when friends (or acquaintances/coworkers/whomever) ask you about their charts or about themselves when they learn you're an astrologer?
From @mercuryprashant via Twitter
Do you charge your regular fees from relatives also? Is your approach different from as compared to unknown clients??
From @joey_puopolo via Twitter
I'm curious how astrologers handle doing readings for their spouses/significant others, and where everyone stands on the ethics of that, etc. I'm sure astrologers don't want a counseling relationship, but at the same time, still want their spouse to be aware of certain placements.

24 Jan 2020 | The Picatrix: A Grimoire of Astrological Magic | 02:30:51
Episode 239 of the podcast features an interview with Christopher Warnock about a book known as the Picatrix, which is a 10th century text on astrological magic.
This is a sweeping two and a half hour discussion where we talk about the history and origins of the text, as well as its contents.
We also get into a lot of specific details surrounding the practice of astrological magic.
Christopher was involved in publishing one of the first modern translations of the text in 2009 with John Michael Greer:
The Complete Picatrix
I thought it would be fitting to have him on the show to talk about the Picatrix, especially given the recent surge in the popularity of astrological magic in recent years, which was discussed a recent episode with Austin Coppock on the relationship between astrology and magic.
You can find out more information about Christopher Warnock's work on his website:
RenaissanceAstrology.com
This episode is available in both audio and video versions below.
Picatrix Show Notes
Here are some of the show notes compiled by Brennan before the interview:
Text known as the Picatrix
Origina Arabicl title: Ghayat al-hakim: The Goal of the Wise / The Aim of the Sage
10th century text on magic and astrology
Became very influential in the later Medieval and Renaissance magical traditions
Focuses a lot on electional astrology and rules for making talismans.
History behind the text.
Probably written in the 10th century
Latest authors cited or used in it lived in 9th century. E.g. Abu Ma’shar
Author is currently thought to be Maslama al-Qurtubi (d. 964 CE)
"It has become widely accepted that it was penned by Maslama al-Qurtubi as identified by Maribel Fierro and confirmed by Godefroid de Callatay." Liana Saif, The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy, p. 250.
"a man of charms and talismans"
Al-Andalus. Iberian Peninsula
The text is a compilation of a bunch of earlier lore that he found in different texts.
Author claims to have consulted 224 books
Wrote it over 6 years.
Text was originally written in Arabic
Translated into Spanish at the court of Alphonso X of Castile 1256-1258
Spanish version then translated into Latin
Latin translation omits some stuff, inserts other passages.
The famous talking head thing is missing from the Arabic version.
Latin Version influenced later European tradition
Interestingly was never put into a printed edition. Just manuscripts.
Influenced later authors like Agrippa, Ficino, and Lilly.
History of modern editions and translations.
A few scholars around the Warburg Institute worked on it in the first half of the 20th century.
Produced a critical edition of the Arabic
Later Pingree published a critical edition of the Latin in the 80s.
The first English translation was the Ouroboros Press version
Translated from the Arabic, but criticized for accuracy.
Warnock and Greer translation from the Latin in 2009
New academic translation of the Latin published recently by Dan Attrell and David Porreca: Picatrix: A Medieval Treatise on Astral Magic.
Upcoming Arabic translation by Liana Saif
Tweeted her progress @MaslamaQ
Contents of the Text

31 Jan 2020 | The Yavanajataka: Greek Astrology in Sanskrit? | 02:29:55
Episode 241 of the podcast features an interview with Kenneth Miller about an ancient Sanskrit text from India known as the Yavanajataka, and the debate about whether it is a translation of a Greek work on Hellenistic astrology.
A critical edition and commentary on this text was published by David Pingree in 1978, and since that time it has become generally accepted in academic circles that there was some sort of transmission of Greek astrology to India between the 1st and 7th centuries CE, which was then merged with the indigenous forms of astrology that already existed there.
In recent years some scholars such as Bill M. Mak have pushed back on Pingree's dating of the Yavanajataka and some of the conclusions that he drew from the text, while still accepting the general premise that the text demonstrates that some sort of transmission did occur.
These conclusions on the part of academics are sometimes rejected by some practitioners of Indian astrology, who believe that their tradition dates back thousands of years, and was integrated into the ancient Vedic religion.
At the United Astrology Conference in 2018 Kenneth Miller presented a talk titled There's Curry in my Feta! The Development of Horoscopic Astrology in India and Egypt, where he pushed back on the notion that the Yavanajataka presents a purely Greek form of astrology.
In this podcast episode we decided to sit down and talk about both sides of the debate, and then actually read through several passages from Pingree's translation of the Yavanajataka, in order to highlight both some similarities as well as some differences when compared to the doctrines of Hellenistic astrology.
Kenneth practices Indian astrology, and is also the President of Kepler College, and you can find out more information about his work at:

06 Feb 2020 | The Asteroids in Astrology, with Demetra George | 01:32:41
Episode 242 features an interview with astrologer Demetra George about her pioneering work on the asteroids in astrology, and why she feels they are interesting and important for astrologers to use.
Demetra published the book Asteroid Goddesses in 1986, which was one of the first works that established an approach for incorporating the asteroids into modern astrology, and this helped to popularize their use over the past three decades.
In her 2008 book Astrology and the Authentic Self she outlined a synthesis of modern and ancient astrology that showed how the asteroids could be incorporated into the framework of traditional astrology.
Previously we recorded a biographical episode about Demetra's life, but our goal with this discussion was to provide a solid introduction to her work on the asteroids and why she thinks they are useful and important.
You can find out more information about Demetra on her website:
Demetra-George.com
She has a number of audio recordings of lectures on the asteroids that she has given over the years, and also offers an asteroid personal report.
Below you will find the show notes, followed by links to the recordings.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions.

Mythological deities are symbolic expressions of inner structures of the psyche.
The re-emerging feminine.
Initial asteroids named after feminine goddesses.
Balancing out predominantly male assignments of planetary names/gods.
Only the Moon and Venus were feminine.

Personal name asteroids
Locations or place asteroids
Grouping asteroids that have similar themes.
There are so many asteroids now, how do you sort and prioritize which ones are more or less important to a person?
From Astrology and the Authentic Self:
Different levels of importance: high, moderate, low, nil.
High: conjunct of opposite luminaries, conjunct ruler of ASC or four angles.

12 Feb 2020 | Relationship Placements in the Birth Chart | 01:57:00
Episode 243 is a recording of a workshop led by astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim about interpreting relationship indicators in the birth chart.
This is a recording of a local meeting of the Denver Astrology Group, and it was meant to be an introductory overview to some of the techniques that astrologers employ when looking at relationships through the lens of natal astrology.
There are three primary areas that we focus on for relationships in the birth chart:
Planets in the 7th house
The ruler of the 7th house
The condition of Venus
During the course of the meeting we demonstrate the techniques by sharing some celebrity and client example charts from our private files, and several members of the audience also shared their personal birth charts so that we could hear how certain placements have worked out in the lives of individuals directly.
This episode of the podcast acts as sort of a companion to other episodes we've done on relationships in the past, such as:
🪐 The Outer Planets and Relationships with Kay Taylor
🪐 Synastry: The Astrology of Relationships with John Green
🪐 Composite Charts, with Originator John Townley
🪐 Sexual Orientation and Astrology with Christopher Renstrom
🪐 Lynn Bell on the Astrology of Family Dynamics
🪐 Relationship Astrology for Modern Times, with Jessica Lanyadoo
There are some concepts that we only mention in passing in this episode, since they have been touched on in other episodes, and also since this was just meant to be a more basic technical introduction.
We would also recommend checking out some of the previous workshops we've done recently, such as the one on the annual profections timing technique, or the workshop on interpreting where transiting eclipses fall in your birth chart.
To learn more about the approach to astrology demonstrated in this workshop, check out Chris' online course on ancient astrology, or Leisa's lectures on annual profections and sect.

22 Nov 2021 | Minor Aspects in Astrology, with Rick Levine | 03:25:32
In episode 328 astrologer Rick Levine joins the show to talk about minor aspects in astrology, and whether they should be regarded as "minor".
Minor aspects are generally categorized as any aspects besides the five classical "major" aspects that were originally introduced in western astrology around the 1st century BCE, which are the conjunction, opposition, trine, square, and sextile.
The minor aspects include the semi-sextile, quincunx, semi-square, sesqui-square, quintile, bi-quintile, septile, novile, and others.
Several of the minor aspects used today were first introduced by the German astronomer and astrologer Johannes Kepler in the 17th century CE, although their adoption in the astrological community has been uneven, with some astrologers using them and others not.
During the course of the episode we discuss the history of minor aspects and some of the debates surrounding them, and then later look at some charts where Rick demonstrates how he uses minor aspects in practice.

15 Dec 2021 | Astrology, Technology, and the Future, with Adam Sommer | 02:08:05
Astrologer Adam Sommer joins the podcast to talk about Pluto, mythology, bitcoin, the metaverse, and their relationship to astrology.
Adam was visiting Colorado in November, and we decided to get together and record a conversation about a bunch of different astrological topics we had been thinking about lately.
The result was a pretty sweeping discussion about a variety of different topics, although the main one that we kept coming back to is astrology and technology.
This is a more casual and less focused episode than usual, but we had a lot of fun and discussed a number of interesting topics.
Adam is the host of the Exploring Astrology Podcast, which you can find on his website:

30 Dec 2021 | Virtual Reality and Astrology, with Kent Bye | 04:56:08
In episode 333 Kent Bye of the Voices of VR Podcast joins me in the studio to talk about virtual reality and its relevance to astrology, as well as the ways in which astrologers will use and incorporate virtual worlds in the future.
During the course of the episode we talk about the history of technology, and how important turning points have historically lined up with major outer planet alignments in the past.
We also spend a bit of time talking about the future, and about some upcoming outer planet trends, and expectations about astrology and virtual reality that are coming up.
Kent wrote an article on astrology and virtual reality in 2017 for the Archai journal titled The Archetypal Cycles of Virtual Reality.
This episode was partially motivated by some of the recent discussion about the Metaverse over the past year, as well as Facebook's announcement that it was changing its name to Meta in October when Jupiter and Saturn stationed direct in Aquarius.
Kent flew out to Denver for a couple of days to record this conversation, as well as another on artificial intelligence that will be released as an episode of The Astrology Podcast next month, and this episode ended up being a sweeping 5-hour discussion where we covered a lot of areas related to astrology and technology.
There are timestamps below so you can see all the different topics we covered.

08 Jan 2022 | 2022 Yearly Horoscopes for All 12 Zodiac Signs | 05:31:06
In episode 334 astrologer Chris Brennan presents a set of year ahead horoscope forecasts for each sign of the zodiac for the entire year ahead of 2022.
This is meant to take some of the general transits that we talked about in our year ahead astrology forecast for 2022 and personalize them, by talking about them in the context of what houses the planets are moving through for each of the rising signs.
I would recommend listening to the zodiac sign that matches your Ascendant or rising sign, although you can also listen to the your Sun sign, especially if you were born during the day, or your Moon sign, especially if you were born at night.
Video Versions of the Horoscopes
I originally recorded these as video horoscopes for my YouTube channel, and there are some fancy visual elements that you may miss if you only listen to the audio version, so I would recommend watching them on my channel here:

12 Jan 2022 | Artificial Intelligence and Astrology | 02:39:14
In episode 335 astrologer Kent Bye joins Chris in the studio in Denver to talk about artificial intelligence and consciousness through the lens of astrology.
Kent is the former host of the Voices of AI Podcast, and has conducted hundreds of interviews with different specialists in AI over the years.
During the course of the episode we cover topics such as whether it will ever be possible to replicate human consciousness with artificial intelligence, what planetary alignments in the future might coincide with this if it was possible, and whether astrology itself could be used as a model for consciousness.
This conversation was recorded the day after our previous episode on virtual reality and astrology, and was originally intended to be more of a casual discussion about artificial intelligence only available to patrons of the podcast, but the discussion went so well that I decided to release it as a full episode of The Astrology Podcast.

20 Jan 2022 | Pluto in Astrology: Meaning and Significations | 03:42:45
In episode 336 astrologer Richard Tarnas joins the show to talk about the meaning of the planet Pluto in astrology.
In astrology Pluto is generally associated with power, control, manipulation, intensity, the underworld, taboos, transformations, destruction and regeneration, death and rebirth, making big things small and small things big.
Richard is the author of the 2006 book Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View, and he previously appeared on episode 84 of The Astrology Podcast in 2016 to talk about the book on its 10 year anniversary.
At the beginning of the episode we talked a bit about the recent conjunction of Saturn and Pluto in 2020, how it coincided with the beginning of the pandemic, and how Richard felt about having discussed that cycle in Cosmos and Psyche in retrospect. Some of this was tied into a discussion in episode 254 titled Misconceptions About Mundane Astrology in the Media.
Later we get into the discovery of Pluto, discuss how astrologers establish the meaning of new planets, and then read through some passages from different astrologers that talk about the meaning of Pluto.
Later in the episode we also touch on how to deal with skeptics of astrology, and how to demonstrate the validity of astrology in general.
We also discuss a new astrology documentary series based on Richard's work titled Changing of the Gods, which will be released next month.

02 Feb 2022 | Changing of the Gods: An Astrology Documentary Series | 01:38:37
Episode 338 features an interview with Kenny Ausubel, director of a new astrology documentary series called Changing of the Gods.
Changing of the Gods is a 10-part series on astrology that is being released later this month, starting on February 22, 2022.
The series is based on the work of the astrologer Richard Tarnas, and his 2006 book Cosmos and Psyche.
The focus of the series is the cycle of Uranus and Pluto, and how the alignments of these two planets coincide with major world events and changes.
The series draws on Tarnas' work in order to show how Uranus-Pluto alignments have coincided with historical events in the past, and then compares them with the most recent alignment, which was a square between 2007 and 2020.
Each episode focuses on different facets of how these alignments have manifested in different levels of society and culture.
During the course of the interview we talk about the production of the series, some of the topics covered, and what the overall vision and message of the series is.

16 Feb 2022 | Hermeticism and Ancient Astrology | 03:12:50
In episode 339 Sam Block joins the show to talk about the ancient philosophy of Hermeticism and its relationship to Hellenistic astrology.
Hermeticism is a religious, philosophical, and mystical movement that arose in Hellenistic Egypt around the first century, and is attributed to the teachings and practices of Hermes Trismegistus.
It represents a popular synthesis of a number of philosophical and religious trends that were popular during the Hellenistic period, including Stoicism, Platonism, native Egyptian religion, and astrology.
The majority of what is known about this philosophical or religious school survives in the Corpus Hermeticum and a handful of other writings from that time period.
During the course of the episode we talk about what is known about the Hermetic philosophical tradition, and how it relates to the technical tradition of astrology that arose during the same time period.
Sam is the author of a series on Hermeticism on his website, which I would recommend checking out for more information on this topic:

23 Feb 2022 | Astrologer or Astrologist: What is the Preferred Designation? | 01:02:31
In episode 340 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim discuss whether the preferred designation for a practitioner of astrology is "astrologer" or "astrologist", and why it is important.
The motivation for this discussion is that there seems to be some confusion among non-astrologers about what the preferred word is to use.
In general, the preferred designation is "astrologer", and this is the word that is used and often strongly preferred by the vast majority of practitioners today.
During the course of the episode we review three informal polls that were done on social media that indicate that between 90–99% of astrologers prefer the term "astrologer" over "astrologist".
Despite the overwhelming preference for the term astrologer, some social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and more recently Twitter have made it so that practitioners can only select the term "astrologist" when listing their profession.
Thus, part of the purpose of this discussion is to raise awareness about this issue among the general public.
While there are occasionally some astrologers who do use the term astrologist, and that is ok, the purpose of this discussion is to clarify that since the vast majority of practitioners prefer the term astrologer, that is the word that should probably be used by non-astrologers when referring to the profession.
This discussion is partially based on an article Chris wrote in 2014 titled Is it Astrologer or Astrologist?

11 Mar 2022 | Planetary Stations in Secondary Progressions | 02:20:36
In episode 342 astrologers Catherine Urban and Nick Dagan Best join the show to discuss what happens when planets station retrograde or direct by secondary progression, and how this can be used as an important timing technique in astrology.
In secondary progressions each day after a person is born represents an entire year of their life, and the planetary alignments on a specific day will correspond to events and experiences in a given year of life.
In this episode we focus in particular on what happens in a native's life in the years that correspond with planets stationing retrograde or direct by secondary progression, and how this can help to identify some of the most important years in a person's life.
During the course of the show we use a bunch of celebrity and personal charts as examples in order to demonstrate how the technique works in practice.

In episode 343 astrologer Eric Purdue joins the show to talk about his new translation of the Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa.
Agrippa published his Three Books of Occult Philosophy in 1533, and it is a compilation of astrology, magic, and philosophy.
After its publication Agrippa's work developed a very large influence and reach in the western esoteric tradition, as an important Renaissance compilation on occult lore.
The last time it was translated into English was in 1551, and Eric's translation improves on the previous one in a number of scholarly and stylistic ways.

26 Mar 2022 | The Future Trajectory of Astrology | 01:27:37
Episode 344 features a discussion between astrologers Rick Levine and Chris Brennan about the future of astrology and whether it will become more or less poplar in the world.
This talk was recorded on March 19, 2022 for a webinar hosted by the International Society for Astrological Research to celebrate International Astrology Day.
The theme of the two day series of webinars was predicting general trends in the world over the next decade, and so we decided to take a unique approach by trying to talk about and predict the future of astrology itself.
The premise of the discussion is that astrology has seen a rapid explosion in popularity in the west over the past 5 years, especially among younger people, which has not happened since the late 1960s.
The main question we focused on was whether astrology would continue to increase in popularity and eventually reach new heights of acceptance, or whether it had reached a high water mark or plateaued in some way and we are due for a decline.
From a long term historical perspective the popularity of astrology has waxed and waned over the centuries, sometimes going up and other times going down, but it never stays in one state permanently.
During the course of the episode we try to frame and understand the important historical moment that we are in now, anticipate what is coming up so that we can understand better what we need to work on now, and then finally also celebrate where astrology is at now by reflecting on how far it has come.

Episode 346 features an interview with astrologer Marcos Patchett about using consultation charts as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in medical astrology.
A consultation chart is an astrological chart that is cast for the moment that a meeting between an astrologer and client begins.
The premise is that the consultation chart will describe both the situation that the client has come to talk about, as well as its potential outcome.
During the course of the episode we discuss how in the context of medical astrology consultation charts can be used as an additional tool for diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction.
Along the way we also talk about horary astrology, decumbiture charts, and the nature of divination.

14 Apr 2022 | Aries in Astrology: Meaning and Traits | 02:26:19
In episode 347 astrologer Rick Levine joins the podcast to talk about the meaning of the zodiac sign Aries in astrology, and some of the traits and characteristics of people born with that sign prominent in their birth chart.
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and it is a masculine or diurnal sign, cardinal, fiery, and ruled by the planet Mars.
This is the first in a new series of episodes where we do a deep-dive into each of the signs of the zodiac, one per episode, in order to really understand their core meaning and significations.
Part of Rick's credentials for this episode is that he was born with a stellium or cluster of planets in Aries, including the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the North Node.
During the course of the episode we talk about various keywords and traits associated with Aries, and also look at some birth charts of famous people who were born with different planets in that sign.
Some of the keywords we discussed were drawn from a Twitter survey:

26 Apr 2022 | Ancient Astrology Volume 2, with Demetra George | 02:17:39
In episode 348, astrologer Demetra George discusses her new book, Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice, Volume Two.
This is the second of two volumes where Demetra delivers a comprehensive look at the practical use of Hellenistic astrology, bringing to completion a cycle that started in 1993 when she became the very first subscriber of the Project Hindsight translation project.
In volume two Demetra takes a closer look at the houses and their role in interpreting a birth chart, taking special care to look at the significations of the houses throughout history, and tracing the common themes that run throughout the 2000 year long tradition.
In our discussion we focused mainly on talking about the significations of the houses, and how some of the significations changed over the course of the tradition, while other stayed the same.

06 May 2022 | Sharing Astrology Transit Stories | 01:46:39
Episode 350 is a recording of a meeting of the Denver Astrology Group where attendees shared stories about transits they experienced over the past two years since our last meeting in early 2020, hosted by astrologer Chris Brennan.
The Denver Astrology Group was started in May of 2008, and held a meeting at the Mercury Cafe on the second Saturday of every month for 12 years, until the pandemic hit in March of 2020.
This meeting was held on April 16, 2022 at the Mercury Cafe in downtown Denver, and it was our first meeting back in two years since the pandemic started.
Because a lot has happened since that time, we thought it would be good to hold a discussion or workshop style meeting where members could share some of their stories about important transits and notable events that have happened in their lives over the past two years since we last met.
Chris led the meeting and opened by talking about the inception charts of the Denver Astrology Group and the Mercury Cafe, and sharing a personal story about his own transits, and then opened it up for audience members to come up to the mic and share their story about a positive or negative transit that they experienced over the past couple of years and how it was reflected in their life.
It ended up being a pretty great demonstration about how different types of transits work, what astrologers look for, as well as how to talk to people about their birth chart.
We plan to resume meetings of the Denver Astrology Group on the second Saturday of each month at the Mercury Cafe.

03 Jun 2022 | Transiting Eclipses in Astrology | 02:01:02
Episode 355 astrologer Chris Brennan leads a workshop on how to understand the meaning of transiting solar and lunar eclipses based on where they fall in your birth chart, with a group of astrologers sharing stories of their past experiences.
This is a recording of a meeting of the Denver Astrology Group that took place on May 14, 2022 at the Mercury Cafe, a couple of weeks after a solar eclipse in Taurus, and the day before a lunar eclipse in Scorpio.
It was a followup to another meeting we did in 2019 that was released as episode 215 titled Interpreting Eclipses in Your Birth Chart, where we demonstrated how to interpret eclipses based on which houses they fall in your birth chart, and then attendees shared stories of eclipses in their lives.
For this meeting attendees were instructed to go back and watch the recording of that last meeting, and then come to this one prepared to share stories of how eclipses had worked out for them in the past.
Here is a handout that shows what signs the eclipses fell in from 2004 through 2025:

15 Jul 2022 | Astrology Chat with Nick Dagan Best | 03:23:43
In episode 360 astrologer Nick Dagan Best joins Chris Brennan in the studio in Denver to talk about his work in astrology, including research on the Uranus return of the United States, Venus retrograde cycles, and more.
Nick flew out to Denver from July 7-11, 2022, and this was the first in a series of episodes we recorded. A lot of the episode ended up being biographical, talking about Nick's life and career in astrology.
We ended up spending a good chunk of the episode talking about the upcoming Uranus return of the United States when Uranus moves into Gemini in 2025 through 2033, and how that connects to the two previous Uranus returns that coincided with the Civil War and World War II.
Later in the episode we also ended up talking about some important new research Nick has done in tracking Venus retrograde cycles, and creating a new model for classifying different sequences.

23 Jul 2022 | Generational Astrology, with Nick Dagan Best | 01:56:31
In episode 361 astrologer Nick Dagan Best joins Chris Brennan in the studio to talk about the application of astrology to study different generational cohorts of people, using slow moving planetary cycles.
During the course of the episode we talk about ways that astrologers use slower moving outer planets to demarcate entire generations of people, such as Pluto's multi-decade long transits through the signs of the zodiac.
We also get into other outer planets, such as Uranus and Neptune, and how their aspects or configurations with each other can change and help characterize entire generations of people.
Later we touch on how there are even some inner planet cycles that shift slowly over the course of generations, such as the Venus retrograde cycle which takes decades to slowly drift from one sign to the next.

19 Aug 2022 | The Progressed Lunation Cycle | 02:18:35
In episode 364 astrologer Catherine Urban joins the show to talk about the progressed lunation cycle in astrology, and how to use this timing technique to identify the seasons and phases of your life.
We begin the episode by talking about the lunation cycle as a concept, how to identify the 8 distinct phases of that cycle, and find out what lunar phase you were born in.
We then move into talking about how each person experiences different phases of the lunation cycle at different points in their life within the context of secondary progressions.
Each person will experience a secondary progressed New Moon at some point in their life, and this will mark the beginning of a new 28 year cycle which is divided into eight sections based on the lunar phases.
During the course of the episode we talk through a few different example charts and discussed what happened in people's lives around the time of a progressed New Moon, and then the ways in which there was a culmination around 14 years later at the secondary progressed Full Moon phase.
The end result was a great introduction to one of the most interesting and useful timing techniques in contemporary astrology.
