38 mins Audience behaviour is changing social media in dramatic ways. Marketing Manager, Meg Edwards of HdK Associates explains what is changing and how arts and culture organisations can adapt. Social media’s ability to engage audiences and prompt interaction is like the holy grail of marketing. But, audience behaviour - especially Gen Z’s behaviour - is changing how everyone engages online. We sat down with HdK Associates Marketing Manager, Meg Edwards to get her insights on how arts, culture and heritage organisations need to think about audience engagement in this shifting social media landscape. Meg explains why targeted storytelling is crucial in engaging audiences on social media to bring your mission and productions to life and the importance of authenticity and transparency. She discusses Gen Z’s impact on the rise of short form video content and what to consider when creating short form media. Meg explains when using short form video, aim to spark joy, inspire awe, and build community alongside directly promoting your mission. Audiences crave these emotional connections. Meg also shares practical tips on keeping your marketing content and campaigns fresh and on point in the constantly shifting waters of social media marketing. Afterall, the relationship between audience behaviour and social media is dynamic. 25 Mar 2024 | The Disruption Dilemma: The Complexities of Audience Behaviour | 00:49:18
This episode of The Arts and Everything in Between was ecorded live with an audience of Ticketsolve community members. Hosted by Lucy and featuring a panel of industry experts from venues across the UK and Ireland, the discussion is sparked by findings from a Ticketsolve survey revealing that 92% of organisations have faced disruptions due to audience conduct, yet only 60% had a defined policy around audience behaviour. The panellists candidly share real-life examples of challenges like alcohol smuggling, late arrivals, photography violations, and confrontations with unruly patrons. They explore different approaches such as bag checks, dance floors, bar policies, and staff training to mitigate issues while maintaining an enjoyable atmosphere. A key theme is the need for consistency in messaging and enforcement across venues and events. The conversation weighs the balance between implementing firm rules and exhibiting flexibility to foster an inclusive environment that can be adapted to various audiences and show types. Ultimately, the episode provides insights for empowering staff, setting reasonable audience expectations, and prioritising safety while delivering outstanding audience experiences. Practical tips are offered for theatre professionals grappling with this increasingly prevalent issue. —————————————- THE ARTS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN PODCAST Explore innovative concepts and gain insights from professionals and leaders in the arts, culture, heritage and live entertainment space. 26 Jun 2023 | Live from RECHARGE! Accessibility with Catherine Turner | 00:36:43
Website accessibility is a necessity in an age where the internet plays a crucial role in providing information, services, and opportunities. But what does digital accessibility really mean for the user? What can your arts organisation do to improve accessibility for your audiences? Trustee at Colchester Arts and technology accessibility advisor Catherine Turner shares her personal experiences as a disabled person trying to work with less than ideal accessible technology. Catherine is also a Web and App Accessibility Advisor, helping developers understand the human impact of technical decisions. She has been the lead consultant for Ticketsolve on their web accessibility project and has supported the system in achieving the goal of reaching the benchmarking required of WCAG 2.1/ AA compliance. In this episode, she takes us through the evolution of digital accessibility and how arts and cultural organisations should approach website accessibility. Her key takeaway? Don’t just implement accessibility for the sake of it - get real users involved. When you work with the people who will ultimately benefit from accessibility improvements you empower those groups and get an end result that works infinitely better for their needs, creating inclusive spaces for all. —————————————- THE ARTS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN PODCAST Investigate new ideas and learn from your arts, culture and heritage peers! 27 Apr 2023 | Price is NOT the Problem with Sean Kelly, Vatic | 00:46:45
How do you know how to price your next show? How do you measure the value of the show to your various patrons and turn that into a ticket price? Should you be considering the cost of living crisis? Other factors lurking in the shadows? Pricing is a tough one - regardless of industry. It is doubly hard for arts and cultural organisations as inextricably linked to their patron as they are plus attendance hesitancy and economic pressures still rife amongst live event audiences. In this episode, Sean Kelly, founder of dynamic pricing tool Vatic, dispels the myths and lays out the case for dynamic pricing. He explains how, while knee jerk reactions are understandable, there is a better way to think about pricing that benefits your organisation, but also makes sense to your audiences. As Sean says, like it or not, every pound and euro counts in the arts and culture industry. We need to value our offerings correctly and allow the data to help open a pricing conversation with customers. To know what the right price is for each customer - we need to start listening to the hidden conversations our customers are having with us each time they buy a ticket. ---------------------------------------- THE ARTS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN PODCAST Investigate new ideas and learn from your arts, culture and heritage peers! 27 Sep 2023 | Benchmarking Best Practices with TRG Arts | 00:51:04
TRG Arts' Senior Consultant, Tom Stickland joins host Lucy Costelloe to discuss how to use data and metrics as the foundation for strategies that help build loyal audiences for arts and cultural organisations. Tom explains the importance of identifying your organisation's definition of success and aligning metrics to long-term goals like patron loyalty and revenue resilience and avoiding short-term targets. Using TRG’s approach, organisations should look at historical data to set realistic growth projections and benchmark against industry data if gaps in your own data make it necessary. But what data should you focus on? Tom suggests focusing on key metrics like earned revenue percentage, patron activity rates, churn/attrition, data capture rates, and per cap ticket revenue and regularly measuring progress throughout the year rather than just at year-end. These sorts of regular checks, with small experiments - and being able to embrace failure when some experiments inevitably fail - is how your team can learn to quickly adapt and course correct versus and still hit all your long-term organisational goals. —————————————- THE ARTS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN PODCAST Explore innovative concepts and gain insights from professionals and leaders in the arts, culture, heritage and live entertainment space. 24 Jul 2023 | The Show Must Go On, with Dr. Kirsty Sedgman | 00:40:48
We’ve seen the headlines: misbehaving, rude and disruptive audiences threatening and even assaulting staff and ruining performances for everyone. What is going on? What happened to the unwritten rules of audience etiquette? From customer-facing industries to public transport and cafes, interpersonal altercations seem to be happening everywhere. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Kirsty Sedgman, author, lecturer and award-winning scholar specialising in audience research and cultural value from Bristol University, to discuss how audience behaviour has changed and the challenges faced by the industry in maintaining a welcoming and respectful atmosphere. Throughout the episode, we explore the intricate dynamics of theatre etiquette and what is acceptable behaviour; from phones and snacks to dress codes and applause protocol. It's clear that there are complex issues at play, including exclusionary expectations that need to be tackled. We delve into the historical roots of silence and reverence in the theatre and discover how social structures and expectations have shaped our perceptions of reasonable behaviour. By clinging to tradition are we inadvertently excluding certain audiences, and perpetuating inequities? Kirsty reminds us of the importance of making accommodations for individuals with different needs as well as for community outreach, and the need to ensure inclusivity and a sense of togetherness. Thank you to our incredible guest, Kirsty Sedgman, for joining us, and we can't wait to delve further into her book. 04 Feb 2022 | Episode 8 - Augmenting Decision-Making: The role of data has changed | 00:19:38
Faced with unprecedented challenges we never expected, Arts professionals have been under immense pressure for over two years and it’s making us all reflect and think differently. While we might have assumed that it would all get easier with the easing of lockdown, we are more aware of the current challenges impacting creative teams and feel pretty certain that we’ll be facing more as we move into the next stages of recovery. The pressure you feel to make tough decisions won’t go away unless we can find better solutions to problem-solving and critically reflect on how we inform our organisational strategies, and the solutions need to be heavily trialled and tested. This episode of The Arts and Everything in Between is hosted by Lucy Costelloe and provides an insight into a new project which Ticketsolve is focusing on for the next three years. In collaboration with the Irish Research Council, this project will identify resilient methods and agile practices around decision-making in times of crisis and in the re-opening of the arts sector in the UK and Ireland. This new knowledge can then be translated into methods to inform business model innovation and sustainability across the sector and you can find out more in this episode! ---------------------------------------- TOPICS AND RESOURCES COVERED IN THIS EPISODE:
