This month’s episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. It's Halloween month, so enjoy this fun-sized episode where I rewatch the dark & gritty 90s supernatural horror OVA, Twilight of the Dark Master. Is this one an actual treat, or is it better left sitting in the bottom of the candy dish? Let's find out!

It’s been a while since I did a music-themed episode! And what better guest to have than the host of a music-themed podcast, Nitro of MDisk Playlist, to talk all about the music of Joe Hisaishi! You probably have heard Hisaishi’s work in Miyazaki’s films, but what else has this immensely talented musician done? Nitro & I talk all about it, plus go through some of our favorite tracks by him (hint: it’s nothing from the soundtracks to Techopolice or Parasite Eve.)

Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. This month, I’m saying goodbye to Summer with a short OVA that features plenty of your typical Summery things in anime: pools, swimming, festivals, yukata...and giant alien monsters?? Yup, we’re revisiting a lesser-remembered Pioneer anime that never became a hit: Hyper Doll! Listen to find out why this 2-episode OVA had me going on a wild goose chase searching for a Japanese 80s variety show!

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

25 years ago today, Studio Ghibli gave us Yoshifumi Kondo's first (and sadly, only) directorial debut film: Whisper of the Heart! And with Studio Ghibli's movie catalog finally streaming on various online platforms around the world, what better time to revisit this beautiful love letter to art and the creative process? With me to gush for several hours about just how much I adore this movie is returning champ Nitro of MDiskPlaylist! Listen as we discuss why Shizuku is one of the most relatable Ghibli heroines for us personally, how it's filled with whimsical Ghibli magic regardless of it's seemingly more down-to-earth story, and just rambling incoherently in general about how much we love it. All this, singing, and answering your listener questions, too!

This month’s podcast episode is a double feature! First, returning guest Nitro & I discuss the Atsuko Tanaka panel from this year’s AnimeFest convention, as she’s a very prolific animator who’s worked on many notable things--including working with Hayao Miyazaki on his various Lupin III works! And speaking of Lupin, this month was Lupin’s 50th Anniversary! So part 2 of the podcast is me, Nitro, and returning guest Tricia (aka boobly) to chit-chat & ramble about Lupin as a franchise & what we love (and maybe don’t love so much) about it.

20 Jan 2021The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 95: Lupin III: The First with Tricia

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

Happy 2021! I’m starting the first episode of this brand new year with something a little different. This time, we’re watching a new anime based off a classic, well-loved franchise:
Lupin III: The First! Lupin & the gang’s first ever CG animated film! And of course, I recruited friend & fellow Lupin fan Tricia to chat about it, and all things Lupin. Join us as we give our immediate thoughts after watching it and give a rundown on what we liked and didn’t like about this fresh new Lupin anime & how it stacks up to 50 years of Lupin III. (The first part of the episode is relatively spoiler-free, with spoiler-filled talk starting at around the 46:57 mark and continuing on for pretty much the rest of the episode, for those who don’t want to be spoiled!) Also in this episode: Nazis suck, which movie director should Lupin fight, and is Zenigata a himbo?? Tune in and find out!

Also - if you’re listening to this in a timely manner, you have until JAN 22, 2021 to enter my giveaway with Gkids to win your own copy of the movie on bluray here!! So hurry if you haven’t already!

This month on the podcast: What does "furry” anime, Pokemon, and Critical Role all have in common? Why, a little somewhat forgotten OVA called KO Beast, that’s what! Find out just how as I revisit this fun little 90s fantasy adventure. (Also some rather somber talk at the end of the episode, which I saved for last in case you need to skip it.)

This month’s episode is another ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by.It’s back to school time for many of you, so what better time to watch a silly OVA about the worst school ever?! This month’s rewatch is 1988′s The Ultimate Teacher.

Heather is back! And this time we teamed up to bring you our report on all the cool vintage anime-related panels we went to at AnimeFest 2016--which were surprisingly a lot! Hear us talk about seeing the iconic seiyuu for Lum & Ataru, getting to watch Akemi Takada paint in person, and how Heather is definitely not responsible for anyone’s sanity if they watch Shoujo Tsubaki.

This month’s episode, I’m joined by Khoda (aka 80sanime on Tumblr) to talk about one of our favorite lesser-known anime films: Goshogun: The Time Etranger (also released here previously as Time Stranger). Listen as Khoda shares her anime origin story with me, we muse over 80s power ballads, and we both try to convince you all to watch this under-appreciated gem.

Here's a shorter in-between-longer-episodes ep of The Anime Nostalgia Podcast, in which I answer the "40 Anime Questions" meme that's been floating around Tumblr here and there. I figured this was a fun way for my listeners who don't know me all that well to get a bit of an idea of what kind of stuff I liked, mixed with a little of my first anime titles and personal opinions.

If you're more into podcast episodes where I talk to guests about specific topics, fear not--I have another episode just like that (which I'm editing as we speak!) that will be released before the end of the month. So hopefully this will tide you over until then.

(I should note that when I copied down the meme, I apparently got a copy of it where 1 question was accidentally asked twice...it seems to have been revised since then, thankfully. If you want to do the meme yourself, check out the questions here.)

As always, feel free to give me your thoughts and comments on this and for future episodes! Thanks for listening!

April 2nd, 2021 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Fantasy Mecha series The Vision of Escaflowne! And to celebrate this milestone, I've called up NewTypeLady from another world to talk all about it with me! Even with an extra long run time for the occasion, we only really touch the tip of the iceberg on just what makes Escaflowne so special, but we give it all we got! Listen as we recount the series' very interesting production history, the great characters that make up this beloved show, and why we think that you should still check out this "isekai" anime all these years later. And for those who already know and love the series, at around the 1:20:13 mark, we go FULL SPOILERS and briefly talk about some of the more interesting spoilery aspects of the series, including how I can never seem to pronounce "Guymelf" correctly, extremely 90s-era anime boyfriends, and lamenting how they don't make messy villains that chew up the scenery like they used to. All this and listener questions, too!

Before Social Media, before AOL Chatrooms, and even before Geocities Fansites, hundreds of anime fans socialized the old fashioned way: through snail mail! The hayday of anime penpalling is long forgotten, but my long-time friend Mayra is here to recollect how we first met over 20 years ago via penpalling & how it used to be a huge part of how we connected with fans. How’d it all happen? What kind of things did we talk about? Take a break from your Thanksgiving festivities and take a listen as we reminisce on this nearly forgotten pocket of fandom history!

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

It only happens once in a blue moon, folks....we finally got a big Hollywood movie that does manga (and anime) justice?! I break from the podcast’s normal format to team back up with my pal and Battle Angel Alita superfan Rachel (aka @SporadicErratic on Twitter) to discuss this milestone for Alita fans everywhere! Listen as we first talk about what we HOPED the movie would include beforehand, and then our joy and excitement (and some minor nit-picking) afterwards in this extra special, extra long Alita Extravaganza! Also in this episode: we briefly discuss how translating manga has changed dramatically since the 90s, Rachel coins the phrase “crocapocalypse”, and we rant about pudding. Now go support this film in theaters while you have the chance!

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

This month’s episode is another ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. This month, I’m switching it up a little for Halloween and re-READING a title! That’s right, it’s my very first Manga ReView! This month I'll be revisiting the 70s horror manga classic The Drifting Classroom. And to make this a true science fiction double feature, I’m giving listeners a little bonus: a short review of the new retro-inspired horror anime movie Violence Voyager. Trick or treat!

Ryan (aka Blacotaku1) started an ambitious project 3 years ago: to scan his entire collection of vintage Japanese Newtype magazines from the 80s to the 90s and share them with other anime fans online via his Tumblr blog, Oldtype/Newtype. Not only that, but to try to share some of the rare old interviews and photos with various creators, artists, and other big industry names that had been lost to the ages. In this episode, I talk to Ryan and find out what got him started on this project, how he got into anime, and what it means to him to be able to share his love of older anime in print media form with the world.

Sidenote: For some reason, this episode got cursed with various technical issues, so there’s a few spots where the audio may sound a little wonky and it sounds like we’re talking over each other--which, I assure you, we didn’t do when we were actually talking! So please excuse these tiny hiccups. ^^;

August 30, 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of one of the weirdest, wackiest, and most beloved series to ever come out of Japan: Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! And returning guest Lynn is here to talk all about the series’ history & what made it so unique, why we still love it even all these years later, and how excited we are that Viz will be re-releasing the manga in English in 2019! Also in this episode: why Animeigo wasn’t the one to release the 2nd movie, how Takahashi’s playing with gender roles affected many readers growing up, and what Urusei Yatsura and Star Trek have in common!

The Saturday Anime series continues with one of the most iconic anime (and manga) to ever be made: AKIRA! And with me to talk a bit about this massively influential franchise is new guest to the show Vrai Kaiser (they/them). Even with 2 hours to chat about Akira, we only manage to touch the tip of the iceberg on what makes this Katsuhiro Otomo classic so special. Listen as we discuss how we first saw this film far too young, how it appealed to more folks than just your typical anime fans, and why this 80s creation is a little too prophetic on how life in 2019 ended up being. Also in this episode: the premiere of my brand new opening theme!.....that you don’t hear until the end. (Whoops.)

Then the second half is Spoiler Talk, for all of you who’re already familiar with the series! Happy Spooky Season! This month, just in time for Halloween, I'm talking all about the cute and slightly terrifying Children's Horror anime film, Unico in the Island of Magic! And to join me to talk all about this kinda creepy classic based on the work of legendary Osamu Tezuka is Gigi from the Dub Talk Podcast! Listen as we discuss how Unico might have traumatized us a bit as kids, why we think the dub of it is so good, and why we think this is a great unconventional viewing choice for the Halloween season, even if you're not normally a fan of scary stuff! But don't worry, we don't just focus on the spooky stuff--there's plenty of fun to be had, too, as this episode also includes: Yoshiaki Kawajiri talk, our frustrations on lack of cute Unico merch in America, and poorly done voice impressions! In February of 2023, we learned that we lost an icon of not just manga and anime, but a pillar of otaku fandom as we know it: Leiji Matsumoto. And so this month, we celebrated him and his beautiful Leijiverse by having a fan-made Memorial Livestream. For those that missed out on it, this is the audio from said livestream, in handy podcast form! The first part of the stream I was joined by Leiji Matsumoto translator and superfan, Zack Davisson, as we give some background on Matsumoto’s live and work. After that, I reached out to the Leijiverse fandom to get audio and written submissions on not only how Matsumoto’s work touched our hearts, but also significantly changed some of our lives. Get those tissues ready, because there’s sure to be some tears shed in this heartfelt, extra-long episode!

Listen as Mary gives us a bit of her personal history with anime, a bit of background on how RetroCrush came to be, and answering a TON of your listener questions as well.

This year, Go Nagai's magical super heroine turned 50 years old! So what better time to have an episode in her honor? And joining me to talk all about her is No. 1 English-speaking Cutie Honey Fan (who has worked on many official American Cutie Honey releases!), Salvatore (aka @retrosofa)! We discuss not only the history of the franchise, but how even though Honey is a pulpy, sexy, and sometimes goofy Magical Girl originally created for boys, she influenced the Magical Girl genre in all sorts of ways we're still seeing today! Also in this episode: the decades-long argument of if Honey even counts as a magical girl, the appeal of giant Go Nagai monster women, and answering all your questions in this extra-long episode!

February 25, 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Bubblegum Crisis’ original release in Japan! So to celebrate, I’ve invited Sean of Zimmerit.moe to talk all about it: the many western influences that inspired it, why it’s label of “cyberpunk” is a bit of a misnomer, and how some aspects of it were surprisingly progressive for an 80s OAV.

This month’s episode is another ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. It’s October, but what if you’re not a fan of horror and still want to get into the Halloween spirit? Let’s see if this month’s ReView can help you out, as I revisit the 1994 Pioneer release Phantom Quest Corp!

A short, ReView episode this time around! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that time’s gone by and I’m a little older.
This time of an 80s Sanrio film I rented on VHS probably a million times as a kid, called The Sea Prince & The Fire Child. And since I was already sort of on the topic of well-loved VHS titles, I threw in a mini review of new VHS documentary Rewind This!

And joining me is new guest to the show, from The Greatest Movie Ever Podcast, it's Paul Chapman! What are cels?” Or maybe you’re an older fan and have always been curious about the world of cel collecting, but never knew where to start. Well, you’re in luck! Long time collectors Stephanie & Jen join me in today’s episode to have a convo with me all about them, and their experience with collecting cels for over 20 years! How do they store them? Recently, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie celebrated it's 30th anniversary! And along with the current fighting game renascence we've been seeing lately, what better time to talk about one of THE best video game adaptations ever made? So of course, I had to recruit returning champion & friend of the show Casey (aka MinovskyArticle) to talk about how this movie stands the test of time, even now. Also in this ep: the movie's surprisingly troubled production, 90s industrial music, epic bromances, and of course: answering your questions. HADOKEN!

2020 is finally almost over! So you know what that means–that’s right, it’s the Year in Review! And much like Krampus, Zee is back to help discuss the results of my annual year-end survey as filled out by you, the listeners! What older anime titles were you excited to buy (sometimes again) this year, and what titles are you looking forward to coming out in 2021? We also talk about all the memorable news stories from throughout this long, endless garbage fire of a year (though if you are utterly exhausted from hearing about 2020 news things, once you get around the time stamp 2:02:49, you can skip to right around the 3:36:56 mark!) I should note that, due to the year 2020 being ABSOLUTELY cursed, my original audio for this ep didn’t turn out great, so I was forced to fall back on my basic Skype recording, ON TOP OF the fact that the survey results got a little borked. So apologies that this episode is far from perfect, but hopefully it’ll still give you some laughs as we try our best to cast out the demons of this wild ride of a year in this extra long episode (with some bonus bloopers after the ending theme! Happy holidays!!)

Some good, some bad, and some titles that were just hilariously weird. We obviously couldn't cover them all, but we tried to cram in as much as humanly possible, just for your holiday enjoyment. Special thanks to Nitro for making my intro music festive for the occasion!

I sadly had to cut out the bits where I mentioned notable manga releases just because we were already running pretty long, so have a list instead!

Some notable older manga titles that came out/where announced in 2013:

As always, feel free to give me your thoughts and comments on this and for future episodes! Thanks for listening and have a safe and fun holiday!

Not only is June the 50th Anniversary of Go Nagai’s manga, but in the US June is also Pride Month! And at the request of AJ (who won the choice of a full podcast episode topic in my ANP Says Trans Rights raffle), we’re talking all about the iconic queer-coded action-horror classic Devilman! Go Nagai superfan Salvatore is back with me this month to talk all about the original 70s manga, TV series, AND the 80s/90s OVA series. We discuss differences between them, what we love & maybe not love so much about each version, and the absolutely MASSIVE influence Go Nagai’s work has had over manga & anime in the last 50 years in this fun, extra-long episode!

This time, a title so forgotten that it never even made it onto DVD: the Sanctuary OVA.

This month, to celebrate not only the new Urusei Yatsura TV anime and the month of Valentine’s Day, let’s revisit the very first Urusei Yatsura: Only You--the series’ first theatrical film! The whole Tomobiki gang makes the show a lot of fun, but can they satisfyingly fill a nearly 2 hour long movie? Let’s see what’s to love about it in this month’s rewatch!

Will this film still come out victorious as one of my top faves, or will I realize I made a mistake and it's a ridiculous mess? Let's find out!

One of Japan’s biggest anime properties is not only finally available legally in the English-speaking world, but it’s also seeing somewhat of a renaissance currently throughout fandom! Join me and Legend of the Galactic Heroes superfan Diana as we give a surprisingly spoiler-free episode about what makes the series tick, why you should NEVER Google any of the character’s names, and how this classic anime seems to just keep getting better with age. (But don’t worry: just like this anime itself, it’s not all serious. We talk about crocs and rap battles, too!)
