This week I talk with Kassidi Jones. She runs the Instagram page @gingers_naps. We discuss antiracism work in the animal welfare world, what that means and looks like, and how she balances mental health in all of this. In the several years that I have been involved in animal rescue and this podcast, I have seen racism and classism at play. But this episode has given me the motivation to get louder, make mistakes, and ultimately be a better ally and community member. This week I talk with Sarah Hankins of the Safe Pet program with Shelby Humane in Alabama. We discuss the work they do to support people leaving domestic violence situations. Many people choose to stay in unsafe situations because they cannot take their pets with them. Safe Pets takes in these animals to care for them while their families get the support they need to leave and get safe. Once their families are back on their feet they are able to be reunited. Of the domestic violence shelters in Alabama, only three are able to take families with pets, highlighting the need for resources like Safe Pets. To learn more about the work they do and how you can support them visit https://www.shelbyhumane.org/safe-pet. If you are in Alabama and can foster animals in these situations, please reach out to Sarah to learn more about the process for becoming approved. 06 Nov 2023 | Ep. 72 - Mission K9 with Bob Bryant | 00:27:09
This week I talk with Bob Bryant of Mission K9 Rescue. With Veterans Day approaching this was a fitting episode to talk about the animals that have served our country. Typically, the military has viewed working dogs as tools for their work and once they are unable to continue working they are often forgotten. However, Bob and I discuss how Mission K9 is working to give these animals the retirement they deserve. Mission K9 works to bring dogs back home after their service has ended overseas and then finds them the most appropriate home, whether it be with their former handler or another family. 20 Dec 2024 | Ep. 107 - Desperate Dogs of Azerbaijan EDITED | 00:28:36
While many countries support animal rescue and welfare efforts, not all countries share the same values. To minimize risks to the rescue, I needed to pull the original episode and edit out some portions of my conversation with Debbie. Please consider donating at the links below or sharing their posts to help support the animals and rescuers. This week I talk with Debbie Spencer from Desperate Dogs of Azerbaijan. We discuss how the rescue started, what the animal climate is like in Azerbaijan, and their plans for growth. It costs approximately $14,000 USD monthly to house and care for the animals that end up as strays in the area. Any rescue knows that, especially in the beginning, funding is the hardest to come by.
