This week I talk with my local animal control officer, Anthony. He works with the shelter I volunteer at. Though this episode may be a "preaching to the choir" episode, I hope it touches someone who needed it. If we truly want to help these animals, we need to work with our local, state, and federal representatives to ensure that proper legislation is enacted to protect these animals. One shocking fact I learned after we stopped recording: Colbert County Animal Control is responsible for an area of approximately 600 square miles with ONE animal control officer.

This week I talk with Sarah Hankins of the Safe Pet program with Shelby Humane in Alabama. We discuss the work they do to support people leaving domestic violence situations. Many people choose to stay in unsafe situations because they cannot take their pets with them. Safe Pets takes in these animals to care for them while their families get the support they need to leave and get safe. Once their families are back on their feet they are able to be reunited. Of the domestic violence shelters in Alabama, only three are able to take families with pets, highlighting the need for resources like Safe Pets. Typically, the military has viewed working dogs as tools for their work and once they are unable to continue working they are often forgotten.
