01 Feb 2021San Pedro Martir Hotshots w/ Chris Ives and Felipe León02:03:57

Today on the show:

We have Chris Ives with the San Juan Hotshots and Felipe León on the show to talk about how firefighting is done in Ensenada Mexico with the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (CONAP) Brigade Forestal Sierra San Pedro...

Chris Ives is a Squad Leader with the San Juan Interagency Hotshot Crew in Durango, CO. He grew up in Montgomery, New Jersey, and then attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where in 2005 he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a focus in Secondary Education.

After graduation, Chris worked building and maintaining hiking trails at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. His experiences at Philmont lead him into environmental education and natural resource management fieldwork. He spent the next six years working
for various conservation corps and private forestry programs throughout the US and Canada. In 2011, Chris decided to try a season of wildland fire fighting as a hotshot in Arizona. He has been in fire ever since, working with hotshot crews, fuels programs, and a wildland fire module. During this time Chris also earned a Master of Science in Forestry degree at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff. For his thesis, Chris examined Fire Moss (several species of moss that naturally colonize burned areas) as a tool for post-wildfire ecosystem restoration.

In 2019 Chris began his work offering wildland fire trainings in Mexico. In addition to his work in Mexico, he volunteers his time working on other initiatives such as a yearly women in wildland fire panel discussion he co-facilitates at NAU. He also continues to provide training and development support to conservation corps programs and the Philmont Conservation Department during the winters, including a job application workshop for Native American youth interested in careers with government land management agencies.

When traveling to Mexico, Chris met up with Felipe on the Parque Nacional Sierra de San Pedro Martir... After talking about fire and forestry management, these two guys decided to team up and create the "San Pedro Martir Hotshots" - An unofficial crew of U.S. wildland firefighters who travel to Mexico in the off season to provide training, equipment, and PPE to the firefighters of the Brigade Forestal San Pedro...

Its a pretty damn amazing program that they teamed up to create, and these guys are doing a much needed mission for the folks in Mexico...

We take a lot of things for granted with wildland fire here in the United States... Well, we take just about everything for granted .

So, lets help out our brothers south of the boarder by spreading the message to the right folks in international conservation efforts with this episode!

01 Oct 2021"Six Minutes for Excellence" w/ Thomas Wurm01:37:50

Thomas Wurm stops by for his second appearance on the show to talk about mental health, mastering the mind body connection, optimizing peak human performance, and his upcoming new book, "Six Minutes for Excellence"...

Thomas Wurm is a wildland firefighter, author, publisher, and podcaster. He is a certified Master Practitioner in NLP (Neuro-linguistic programing), Hypnosis, and Mental-Emotional Release®... He is also a certified Fitness Trainer and Sports Nutritionist. He uses NLP, hypnosis, Mental-Emotional Release®, co-active coaching methodology, nutrition, and fitness as tools for success in his practice. Thomas studied at the Awakened Academy, Coaches University, International NLP Center, International Sports Science Association, Self-Publishing School, Empowerment Partnership, and on the fireline.

Thomas studied wildland fire for fourteen years on firelines around the western United States, and in doing so, Thomas saw a gap in the mental health services being provided to wildland firefighters through official channels. Per his training, Thomas recognized that if a gap exists, it must be called out and closed.

The intention of Mountain Mind Tricks is to help wildland firefighters develop leadership, peak performance, and mindset so they can reach their highest potential on the line and at home. In Thomas’ experience, it’s easier for fire agencies to hire a new employee than it is to support existing ones, and he wants to fully support wildland firefighters in the areas of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. By reframing the way in which the fire community is dealing with the mental health crisis burning in the west, Thomas is forging a healthy path forward.

About his upcoming book, Six Minutes for Excellence, he highlights the concepts of Leadership, Peak Performance, and Mindset in Wildland Firefighting:

The S-courses will never teach you excellence because excellence comes from within. When there is gap in the line you call it out and then you close you, don’t you? Thomas M. Wurm is calling out the mental-emotional gap in the wildland fire community and giving you the tools to close it. You were taught about human factors in wildland fire but where are the techniques to change a limiting human factor into a lesson for growth? Six Minutes for Excellence illuminates the path to excellence for courageous men and women to open their minds to the extraordinary power of human potential. Thomas’ strategies will support and amplify yourpower to ignite your internal leadership. Focusing on mindset, peak performance, and leadership in the wildland fire environment, Six Minutes for Excellence is a guide to your highest potential as a wildland firefighter. This book will teach you how to take charge of your mind and optimize your results.

Learn how to breathe, anchor, visualize, and execute any wildland fire task with excellence, because when alignment is achieved in the mind, body, and spirit, wildland firefighters can control their results.

18 Aug 2023How Technology Can Save Lives In Fighting Wildfires With Andy Bozzo01:48:34

Wildfires are getting bigger and bigger every single year. Those 100-year fires are now happening at intervals of five or ten years, and they are much deadlier to handle. Andy Bozzo wants to arm wildfire fighters with the right technology to give them a much safer time eliminating this kind of fire, saving many lives in the process. This is where Tablet Command comes in. Andy joins Brandon Dunham to discuss how the tool optimizes resource management and increases situational awareness for those running around on the fire line. He shares how its concept was born out of a game of Words With Friends and continuously being upgraded based on firefighter’s first-hand experiences. Andy also talks about his leadership style of inclusivity and humility, which is far more impactful than simply ordering people what to do.

08 Jul 2019The Side Hustle w/ Adam Tinker01:26:07

Lets face it, we are a talented pool of craftsmen and craftswomen that are out there in the field. Our talents and skills make us valuable, not only in the realm of fire, but far far beyond - Adam and I came to the same conclusion:

PUT THOSE SKILLS TO WORK!

Adam Tinker is a second generation firefighter. His father is a salty OG Del Rosa Hotshot, so naturally Adam got into fire as well... 06 Sep 2022"From: Drop Out - To: Tanker Pilot" With Zach Sullivan02:39:16

Its not too often you hear about someone who's made a career path from being a front line wildland firefighter, to someone who is dropping fire retardant on wildfires, to someone who is coordinating the whole aviation show as an Air Attack...

That's why we have Zachary Sullivan on the show today - To tell his story of his unique experience of his career path into fire aviation!

"Zachery Sullivan took an unconventional path from being being a wildland firefighter to becoming a tanker pilot. After dropping out of high school, Zachery made a career our of running heavy equipment for various excavation companies in the midwest. In 2003 his career brought him to the Colorado Mountains where he began his introduction to wildland firefighting with a volunteer organization. At age 24 Zachery made a career change from heavy construction to career wildland firefighter in Northern Colorado.

Since making that leap, Zachery has worked for various municipal, county, and federal agencies over the coarse of the last 18 years. In 2020 Zachery turned his interest from fighting fire on the ground, to becoming a Single Engine Air Tanker pilot for CO Fire Aviation. Most recently Zachery completed the National Aerial Supervision Academy and has begun the path of becoming a qualified Air Attack.

When Zachery isn't fighting fire he enjoys spending time with his wife Ruby and their 150 pound English Mastiff Maddie...

Ruby and Zachery can be found at their home in Loveland Colorado or at their property in The Snowy Mountain Range of Wyoming. Zachery is an avid snowmobiler and when the fire season completes; he can be found fly fishing on the Platte River."

13 Apr 2020The Contracting World w/ FireStorm Fire01:21:32

Lets show our contractor counterparts some love!

Today on the show, Josh Hiller stops by and drops some knowledge bombs about the world of contract fire suppression...

Josh is the emergency services coordinator with Firestorm Wildland Fire Suppression Incorporated, a private contractor outfit located in Chico, California... Firestorm not only provides fire suppression services, but they also think outside the box when it comes to other services.

They offer GIS and mapping services, hazardous fuels reduction, defensible space improvements - hell, they have done massive illegal marijuana abatement programs with the USFS and even did Space Shuttle Columbia recovery missions in Texas.

Point is, contractors don't necessarily just fight fire and perform fuels reduction missions - They do a lot of other stuff as well!

Here is a little about Josh:

"Josh Hiller started his employment with Firestorm in 1996 as a rookie firefighter. Josh ran his own twenty person crew for 8 seasons and then in 2008 stepped out of the role of Crew Superintendent by passing the job to new leaders whom he had trained. Josh now serves as the Emergency Services Coordinator. Josh is very active working with all of Firestorm’s resources on various assignments, whether it is emergency services, fuels and fire safety projects or controlled burning. Josh is a natural leader with high expectations that exemplifies the services and product that Firestorm delivers."

Also - These guys are hiring! So, if you didn't get picked up by a crew this year, this is an excellent opportunity to get your foot in the door! They pay competitively, and take care of their folks...

Check them out here:

Website =  https://firestormfire.com

Instagram = https://www.instagram.com/firestorm_fire/

Facebook = https://www.facebook.com/FirestormFire/

I hope that this episode explains what the world of contracting is all about. They sometimes get a bad rap - but these guys are legit, and are 100% our brothers and sisters on the line...

Enjoy!

11 May 2020Southern Hospitality and Region 8 w/ Branden Sultemeier01:14:07

Former Ely hoodrat turned AFMO, Branden Sultemeier, stops by to talk about firefighting in the South!

Region 8 is an often overlooked region when it comes to fighting fire. Truth of the matter is that its a lesser known and hidden gem for wildland firefighting!

Branden Sultemeier is out of the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana. He's been in fire pretty much all of his life - starting when he was young, when his grandfather would ask him to keep fenceposts from catching on fire during ag burns... When he got a little older, he started volunteering - where he found his passion in wildland fire...

He also talks about how region eight has provided him some very unique firefighting opportunities during the episode, and how you could have some of those opportunities too! If you happen to be looking for a change of pace, or are looking to get into wildland fire in the south, hit up Branden here:

14 Feb 2022The Wildland Firefighter Foundation With Burk Minor01:28:32

Today on the show, I have the honor to sit down with Burk Minor from the Wildland Firefighter Foundation™ to talk about how the organization was started, the mission that they fulfill, the legacies of men and women they preserve and honor, and the what the future of the organization looks like...

Burk has an amazing vision for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, and we get to hear it through his words. We also get the opportunity to clear up some misconceptions about the organization, hear his passion for giving back to the wildland community, and also get to know Burk a little bit.

The Wildland Firefighter Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization who's mission is to help families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and to assist injured firefighters and their families, across the globe, to anyone who steps foot "in the black"... From Honor Guard to just helping people get by in times of need - The Wildland Firefighter Foundation is, and has been, there for the boots on the ground since 1994.

The Wildland Firefighter Foundation is primarily funded from the generosity of the very community of wildland firefighters that it supports and a handful of corporate donors who believe in the WFF's mission. 14 Sep 2020Chuckar Chasers w/Adam Stempeck and Damon Booth01:57:38

This episode is dedicated to all the chuckar hunters out there...

Today on the show; Adam Stempeck and Damon Booth talk about the "Red Legged Devil" (AKA the Chuckar), conservation, the Martin Fire, and the Chuckar Chasers Foundation!

Chucker Chasers is a community of outdoor enthusiast, sportsman, and women that stand to promote the great outdoors, wildlife, and recreational hunting. They emphasize the importance and responsibility of being an ethical hunter by exposing others to the deeply rooted pastime of one of our greatest outdoor traditions, upland game hunting. They serve as an informative resource for those interested in experiencing the thrill and respect for the chase.

These guys did one hell of a job documenting the Martin fire rehabilitation in Nevada. The fire burned a total area of 439,230 acres. It was the largest fire in Nevada’s history, and one of the biggest in the U.S. The blaze destroyed six ranches, grazing land, and animal habitats. Not only that, but the Chuckar Chasers Foundation also helps provide youth hunts and conservation efforts for chuckar habitats!

You can find the Chuckar Chasers here:
http://www.chukarchasers.com/#home

You can also find their video on the Martin fire here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdV4NwiQ48Y

We also went down a rabbit hole about onX, a map and hunting app that helps you find your way around. You can find them, and their video about their wildfire map overlays here:

26 Jul 2021JK Boots Round 3 w/ Tim Khadzhi02:58:41

Today on the show, I sit down to talk with Tim Khadzhi at the new JK Boots location in Redding California...

The Khadzhi family is a prime example of chasing the "American dream". The family came to the United States in 1994 seeking a better life...  From that, JK Boots was founded, and has exploded in popularity among the fire community.

On the episode, we don't necessarily dive into the ins and outs of the actual boots themselves. We dive into the driving factors that motivate the owners to become the absolute best in the game. We also focus on getting to know the "man behind the boots", the story behind JK Boots, the philosophy of the company, and the future of JK Boots...

To find out more information, check out the following websites:

23 Dec 2019Happy Holidays from the WFF00:13:07

Happy holidays from the Wildland Firefighter Foundation!

Wildland Firefighter Foundation’s main focus is to help families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and to assist injured firefighters and their families. We honor and acknowledge past, present, and future members of the wildland firefighting community, and partner with private and interagency organizations to bring recognition to wildland firefighters.

The Foundation came together as a group of volunteers in 1994, shortly after the Storm King tragedy. With dedication and lots of volunteer work, plans were developed for a national monument to honor firefighters, a dream that was realized in May 2000. The Wildland Firefighter Foundation was officially formed in the spring of 1999. Our board members realized that there was a great need to have emergency support services for the families of fallen firefighters.

Be sure to check out their website and re-up your 52 club membership!

The WFF --> https://wffoundation.org/52-club/

Thank you everyone for making The Anchor Point Podcast a huge success in such a short time, and a Huge thank you to all of our sponsors: Hotshot Brewery, The Smokey Generation, and Mystery Ranch!

We will be taking a little hiatus over the holidays to regroup and spend time with our family - We will see you again in the new year!

29 Jul 2019PTSD, Cardboard Flip Flops, and Coordination Centers w/ Gary Atteberry01:02:26

Gary Atteberry has been around the block...

He has been all the way from surf bum, Hotshot, rookie jumper, to operations manager for the Redmond Smokejumpers. He's got a lot of story to tell, and encountered some tragedy along the way...

This is the story of the life of one firefighter, cardboard flip flops, camaraderie, PTSD, and life after tragedy... More importantly, this is the story of overcoming of adversity...

We also go into what he does now at the coordination center, and how the chess pieces (resources) get moved around the GACCs and a little insight on what it takes to be a  Smokejumper!

Hope that the message that he sends sticks with the people that are seeking help out there, because help is available...

Here is a list of some resources below... Just remember, if they can't help you directly, they can definitely point you in the right direction...

And don't forget about the EAP program with your agency...

Break the stigma...

Thank you for listening...

12 May 2019Nelda St. Clair01:36:29

Nelda is a former firefighter who's worked her way through the ranks, and ultimately help bring about the CISM program. On this episode she covers her history, her background, and the reasons why she is so dedicated to mental health. Along with that, she goes into great detail about the CISM program and the importance of self care/buddy care...

This is unscripted, barely edited, and raw episode... Its a bit long, and a bit dark, but its great information and can help you, or someone that you know down the road...

I wanted to tackle this episode right off the bat on episode one because its the "elephant in the room" discussion. Its a topic that nobody wants to acknowledge - So, Nelda and I decided to take the discussion head on...

Side note: im still figuring this whole podcasting thing out, so this episode might have some volume issues... You'll deal with it...

Hope you guys enjoy

04 Nov 2019Fire Fitness W/ Zach Roubo01:18:40

Former Wildland Firefighter Zach Roubo stops by The Anchor Point Podcast and shares his first hand experiences with firefighting, MMA, Brazilian Jui-jitsu, and fitness...

Zach has been in the Reno area for over 20 years now. He has been doing martial arts for 19 years and in 2019 received his 4th degree black belt in MMA and his purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. When not at work or in the gym, you can usually find him paddle boarding in Tahoe, hiking anything with a hill or relaxing, playing the guitar.

I have been in the fitness industry for a few years.  My original training came through CrossFit and IFA.  After meeting Matt and coaching him in boxing, I did my CPPS certification with Diesel Strength (Joe Defranco and Jim Smith).

"My personal fitness goal is to be active and outdoors as long as I can. My fitness goal for my clients is to be out of pain, feel great and help them achieve their goals."

Zach has some great tips and advice for getting yourself ready for the fire season! Be sure to check out Pendola Training at http://www.pendolatraining.com where you can find Zach coaching and doing awesome stuff!

Or you can always give him a call... (bold move, Zach)

03 May 2021"PTSD and Why I Had To Leave" w/ Mike West01:56:49

Mike West has been in the wildland firefighting game for 17 years in various roles. He's done a little bit of everything from being a Hotshot, Type 2 IA crew member, engine crew member, to a dispatcher...

Our community recognizes the fact that this line of work can be austere, physically demanding, and even more demanding on your mental health - And over the course of Mike's career, his mental health took the brunt of these demands.

Mike eventually left the agency due to these reasons:

  1. "I was diagnosed with PTSD, and I didn't think I could heal from it if I stayed in fire."
  2. "My career had a very negative impact on my family life. I found it impossible to balance fire and my personal life."
  3. "I always wanted to be a teacher."
  4. "The whole forestry tech/firefighter thing. No need to beat that dead horse. We all know the issue."
  5. "I wanted my summers back."
  6. "I think the FS could retain a lot of forestry techs with better pay and support systems. But I wasn't going to stay. By the time I decided to leave, the title of firefighter with good pay wouldn't have kept me. I was totally over it. There's a lot of fun to be had in fire, but I wasn't going to sacrifice my family relationships for it."

Upon leaving the agency, Mike wrote a heartfelt and honest letter to the forest to explain why he needed to leave fire... If you have a chance, read his letter here:

https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5f6ced5b8d33bb20b5c97c0b/t/5f90da99b807353e9052ec13/1603328667160/Mike+West+Resignation+Letter_Redacted.pdf

He hopes that this letter helps inspire anyone who is struggling with mental health issues to seek the help that they need.

Mike is now "retired" from the agency and is a teacher in Susanville, California and is a contributor to the Mystery Ranch "Backbone Series"

25 Apr 2023Q & A with Assistant Director of BLM Fire and Aviation - Grant Beebe on Pay, Classification, and Other Issues02:43:45

The Anchor Point Podcast Episode 116 with, Grant Beebe, Assistant Director of BLM Fire and Aviation. On today's episode we will be discussing Wildland Firefighter Pay Parity, Classification, Mental Health Issues, and much more...

The wildland firefighting workforce is currently facing a number of challenges, and these issues are the focus of The Anchor Point Podcast Episode 116. The guest on the show today is Grant Beebe, Assistant Director of BLM Fire and Aviation, and the conversation centers around current concerns regarding wildland firefighter pay parity, classification, and mental health issues.

One of the primary issues facing wildland firefighters is pay and retention. With the expiration of the BIL pay and benefits supplement in October, many fear that they will be back to the pay schedules and rates that existed before the work of the Grassroots Wildland Firefighters and NFFE. Grant acknowledges the uncertainty and discusses the potential personnel crisis that could result from a lack of equitable pay, benefits, and classification.

Beebe believes that pay parity is crucial for the men and women who are the boots on the ground. In his opinion, an equitable pay rate needs to be established, and there should be efforts to retain personnel who are vital to the day-to-day operations of wildland fire ops, including dispatchers, WG, militia, logistics, and secondary fire personnel.

Beebe explains that there are plans to address these issues, including temp buyback, insurance and benefits, and classification. However, the question of how to fix these problems remains. Beebe suggests that it may require legislative action.

Another issue affecting the wildland firefighting workforce is mental health. Beebe acknowledges that there is a mental health crisis within the ranks and discusses efforts to address the issue. He notes that the BIL provided funding for the development and improvement of mental health programs across all agencies. Beebe discusses some of the programs that are being improved with this funding and notes that there are other mental health programs on the horizon.

Beebe also discusses operational changes and concerns, including aviation, fuels, and hiring. He discusses the BLM aviation programs and how they plan to bolster fuels programs without overburdening fire employees who have already worked 1000 hour seasons. Grant also discusses transparency and honesty with hiring.

DISCLAIMER:

For the topics discussed today: I want to make it absolutely clear that I disagree with some of the things said by Grant in this episode - And I do agree with some of the stuff he says as well.

However I will say this: Grant, we're all looking up to you in the Bureau of Land Management. We hope that you have those difficult conversations and listen to the boots on the ground - Because those are the people that have the most skin in the game, and you have the position and power to bridge the gap to do what's right by them.

I hope that this is of value and I hope that everyone out there gets to understand Grant from his position and his perspective...

Y'all know the drill:

Stay safe, stay savage... Peace!

20 Jul 2020Wildfire Smoke Exposure and The Big "C" w/ Dr. Kathleen Navarro01:01:09

Dr. Kathleen Navarro is a research industrial hygienist at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Her research focuses on characterizing firefighter’s exposure to chemicals from smoke, understand pathways of exposures, and developing practices to reduce exposure. Previously, she worked for the US Forest Service and conducted research quantifying exposure to smoke for the public and wildland firefighters and estimating risk of mortality for lung cancer and cardiovascular disease for wildland firefighters. To complete her research, she became qualified as a wildland firefighter and spent last fire season as a crewmember on the Redmond Hotshots.

Her work can be found here:

Risk assessment study - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30981117/

Summary of results: Across all exposure scenarios and career durations, the calculated risk for LC and CVD was greater than one, indicating an increased risk of mortality from LC and CVD from PM.  Here are interpretations of the risk estimates that were calculated:

  • Firefighters working a short fire season (48 days) for 5 years have an 8% increase in risk of LC and 16% increase in risk of CVD (Cardiovascular Disease) mortality.
  • Firefighters working a long fire season for 25 years have an 43% increase in risk of LC and 30% increase in risk of CVD (Cardiovascular Disease) mortality

Oh, how could I forget? All this particulate matter and smoke has a HUGE impact on susceptibility and severity to COVID. Check out the following guidance from the CDC:

These are being updated with a smoke question - https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/wildland-firefighters-faq.html

Here is a new link for the FMB guidance regarding COVID from the NWCG - https://www.nwcg.gov/partners/fmb/covid-19#PM

Additional resources:

To better understand the link between on-the-job exposure to toxicants and cancer, Congress directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)external icon to create the National Firefighter Registry (NFR).

The NFR will be used to track and analyze cancer trends and risk factors among the U.S. fire service to help the public safety community, researchers, scientists and medical professionals find better ways to protect those who protect our communities and environment.

All firefighters—structural and wildland, career and volunteer, active and retired—should consider participating in the NFR. This includes firefighters who have never received a cancer diagnosis, previously had cancer, or currently have cancer. Follow the link below to register:

28 Jun 2021Multi-Mission Aircraft and FireGuard w/ Peter Vidmar01:06:47

Today on the show:

We learn about some of the emerging technologies and situational awareness gathering tools being used to gather intel, detect new fire starts, and potentially save lives and property from Peter Vidmar...

Peter is a former helitack crew member, turned captain and aircraft manager for the Colorado DFPC, with 10 years of fire experience under his belt.

Here is a little more about Pete:

"I started in fire in 2011, working 2 seasons in fire mitigation before joining a suppression module with Rocky Mountain Fire District in 2013. In 2014, I joined DFPC as a firefighter out of Fort Collins, primarily staffing engines. I then took a year-round job with Texas A&M Forest Service as a Regional Fire Coordinator (FMO) in west Texas for 2015 and part of 2016, managing fire response and grant programs for 13 counties. In the Spring of 2016, I rejoined DFPC as a senior firefighter on Cañon Helitack. I was promoted to Captain and transferred to the Multi-Mission Aircraft program as a manager in 2017, where I first became intimately familiar with fire intelligence programs. Beginning in 2020, I was given the additional responsibility of being the program lead for the program that is now called FireGuard. I directed the State-led pilot program in 2020, and currently serve as senior liaison and member of the leadership team for the national effort."

One of those tools that we talk about today is: "Fireguard"

Fireguard is a data analysis program comprised of military resources, NIFC, and the "boots on the ground" to identify new fire starts and to monitor ongoing fires. Not only does it detect new starts, but the program will also automate and push out notifications based on your area of operations with the most up to date info with info such as rate of spread, direction, and critical values at risk (such as wildland urban interface)...

Its a pretty valuable program with a lot of situational awareness gathering tools at your disposal

To learn more about the program, check out these links:

How will notification be made of a new fire?

· Instead of a phone call to a GACC or Dispatch Center followed by an email with a PDF Spot Report including a map, users at all levels will be able to draw custom areas of interest (AOI) for receiving alerts. By navigating to this form (https://bit.ly/2PWU130), users can draw a polygon that defines AOI for automated initial notifications on fires, and for urgent updates when analysts see extreme fire behavior that is imminently threatening values at risk.

How can I access the data?

· The data will be available on an NIFC org Dashboard (https://iaa-nifc.hub.arcgis.com/) and EGP. The polygons associated with the new detections will be viewable on the Situation Analyst in the Intelligence and Resources (IR) view state.

How can I give feedback?

· Feedback should be sent to sean.triplett@usda.gov or peter.vidmar@state.co.us

30 Nov 2020Dana Gleason02:19:49

Today on the show -  We get a little history lesson and some behind the scenes storytelling from the man, the myth, the legend, Dana Gleason himself!

Dana Gleason has been around the outdoor industry since the late 70's. Dana's first company, Kletterwerks, was just the start of a lineage of companies that would set the standard in the outdoors industry... After Kletterwerks, he then went on to create Dana Design, an independent pack company based in Bozeman, MT.

Eventually, Dana made the decision to sell Dana Design in 1995... However, he was brought out of retirement after his daughter asked him to design a custom "hip sack" for her - This ultimately made him decide to form what we now know as Mystery Ranch!

Moral of the story:  Follow your passion; and if at first you don't succeed, try again until you're successful!

These folks at Mystery Ranch have been at the forefront of trying to make things better for the boots on the ground in the realm of wildland fire... Good thing for us, is that they are trying to tell the stories of wildland firefighters across the nation - and supporting us with awesome programs like The Backbone Series...

25 Oct 2021Mental Demob w/ Shannon Mead01:56:20

Well folks, its about that time to start calling it dunzo for the season...

With that comes a whole new set of challenges - The boredom, the part where you have to explain to the "normies" what you do for work, the awkward reintegration into your own family, figuring out what you're going to do during the winter, the holidays, where you're going to live - The list goes on...

All of this stacks up, and it can be an overwhelming experience for the folks that are young in the game... It can even be more difficult for the folks that are seasoned in the fire game.

Thats why we have Shannon Mead on the show today to talk about the importance of having a plan for the off season, and also not having a "Glide-path" to actually wind down from the adrenaline high and stress of the fire season.

Heres a little more about Shannon:

Shannon Mead is a local clinician in Reno, Nevada who specializes in military, law enforcement, wildland firefighters, and first responders...

"As a therapist, adoptive mom, and friend/family member to a whole bunch of first responders - I know that helping takes a heavy toll on those who are willing to shoulder the burden. And unfortunately, the existing supports aren’t always helpful (to put it kindly). Whether I am working with individuals, couples, or an entire organization, my purpose is to strengthen those who sacrifice for our community.

I have a Masters degree in Couple and Family Therapy from Antioch University and a corporate coaching certificate from Fielding University. I am intrigued by systems and patterns, and as a therapist I tend to be practical and straightforward. Perhaps that is because I spent many years as a tech and data consultant before pivoting into counseling.

Over the years I have become increasingly interested in compassion fatigue and secondary trauma, and focused most of my research on these topics. As a foster/adoptive parent I have felt the burden myself, but have also seen it in the lives of my guardian friends and family. I absolutely hate that those who step in to help are often chewed up by the roles and I’m working hard to do something about it."

She is just one of the many "culturally competent clinicians" out there that are available... Please feel free to use her practice as a resource this season.

You can find her practice here:

https://www.stackofstones.com

Shannon also just produced a training video with some great tips on winding down for the off season!

You can find that video, and a bunch of other good stuff at the following links here:

https://www.stackofstones.com/wildland-resources

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuxxAjOcs6P5MfZC8NCoPHg

Call her, email her, do whatever you need to do to take care of yourselves before, during, and after the fire season!

02 Nov 2020Lucas Mayfield Part 2 - "The Backbone Series and 1039 Scholarship"01:33:10

Today on the show: Luke and I sit down at Mystery Ranch in Bozeman, MT to talk about some of the lessons learned with his wildland fire career, and how things don't have to remain as the "status quo" that we see now...

We also go into detail about the Backbone Series and the 1039 Scholarship opportunities with Mystery Ranch!

Luke spent 18 years fighting fire with various crews and finished his fire career as the Assistant Superintendent of Rogue River Hotshots. After that, he went on to become the Fire Program Manager of Mystery Ranch...

Here is a little about Lucas:

"I grew up in Moscow, Idaho and went to The University of Montana. I started working in the woods at 17 years old for a conservation corps based out of Oregon. I started working for the United States Forest Service in 2001 on a packing crew (horses, mules, axes and crosscuts). I worked in 4 regions and on 7 different forests and spent 18 seasons with the Forest Service. My last 12 seasons were spent on Interagency Hotshot Crews and I resigned as a Supervisory Forestry Technician."

He had plenty of good reason to get out of fire... Namely, preserving his own mental and physical health, which we go into great detail with in the episode. Now that he is the Fire Program Manager over at Mystery Ranch, things are quite different...

23 Jun 2023Whole Body Wellness: The Simple Secrets To Health, Nutrition, And Human Optimization With Paul Tijerina02:02:39

In this episode, we’re going to talk about whole body wellness, and we have just the right guest to speak to that. Paul Tijerina is a master health coach with expertise in functional nutritional therapy and primal health. And boy does he have compelling stuff to share!

As hotshots, it is part of our job to make sure we’re consistently operating in our best form. Consequently, things like proper nutrition, exercise and good sleep come into play. But this is also one of the most hotly contested areas around, with different schools of thoughts having opposing claims, and it’s sometimes really hard to get to the truth.

Paul makes it easier for us by breaking it down to the simplest, most fundamental concepts. If you want to know more, then it’s time to tune in!

A little about Paul Tijerina...

Paul Tijerina is a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Primal Health Coach Level 2, who also goes by the title of Master Health Coach.

Once a West Point graduate and army veteran, Paul found himself at his lowest point after leaving the military in 2002. With a weight of 275 pounds, high blood pressure, pre-diabetic condition, major digestive issues, and intense inflammation, his health was in dire straits.

Determined to turn things around, Paul embarked on a two-year vegan journey, hoping for improvement. While he saw some minor changes, he also encountered new complications. It was during this time that he discovered what he now refers to as ancestral health, and since then, he hasn't looked back.

For more than a decade, Paul has been coaching individuals on animal-based nutrition, ancestral-based health, self-reliance, and simplified living, among other fascinating subjects. But recently, some significant life events compelled him to reevaluate his priorities. As a result, he made a bold decision: taking his message off the grid, he now travels the nation in a camping trailer, conducting seminars and aiding people in reconnecting with nature (a process he calls "rewilding").

Paul's ultimate vision for his clients is to help them experience the freedom and joy that comes from being healthy, prepared, and leading a simpler life. By working with him, individuals have witnessed transformative outcomes such as shedding excess fat, enhancing performance, boosting energy levels, improving hormonal balance, strengthening digestion, and enjoying better mental and emotional wellbeing.

07 Feb 2022An Epic Ride Part 3 w/Kevin Conley01:49:25

Former Snake River Hotshot, Kevin Conley, stops by to talk on part 3 of his epic bicycle journey across the United States to raise awareness for mental health and fundraise for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation...

We last spoke with Kevin when he was in Pensacola, Florida on the last leg of his journey across the southern tier bike route. Now we sit down at the Wildland Firefighter Foundation in Boise, Idaho, to record his "post fundraiser tell-all" about the trip!

Kevin finished his ride in St. Augustine, Florida December 19th, 2021 with an entourage of Forest Service firefighters, the St. Augustine Fire Department, law enforcement escorts, and a contingent of fans who have been tracking his trip.

Kevins endeavor ended up raising just shy of $15,000 for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation... But more importantly, his journey brought awareness to the issue of mental health in the wildland community while simultaneously healing his own struggles.

To follow his journey, check out his socials here:

Special thanks to Payette Brewing Co. and all the folks who came out to supporting Kevin's in-person fundraiser to round off his epic journey!

26 Oct 2020Lucas Mayfield part 1of 2 - "Hotshotting and Career Transitions"01:40:41

Lucas Mayfield is a jack of all trades (which is kind of necessary for a fire career)...

22 Jun 2022Grassroots Wildland Firefighters & National Federation of Federal Employees Infrastructure Bill Discussion01:16:07

Today - June 21st, 2021: The entire federal wildland firefighting workforce FINALLY got some good news about the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act and the pay raise that comes along with it...

That's why we have two of the major players in the game on the show to discuss all of the pertinent information, and how it effects the "boots on the ground".

Special thank you to the Grassroots Wildland Firefighters nonprofit, and the National Federation of Federal Employees for your dedication and resolve in getting this implemented correctly! This monumental legislation couldn't have been possible without you two and, especially, every wildland firefighter out there that supported or believed in the cause...

03 Feb 2020Operational Drones w/Simon Weibel00:42:50

The future is now!

Today on the show Simon Weibel stops by and shares some pretty rad information on Drone Amplified and the IGNIS 2 UAS/PSD system!

Simon has been around the game for a bit, here's a little bio on him:

Simon Weibel started fire right out of High School with Grayback Forestry Inc. on their Type 2 IA crew. After that I got my EMT-B certification and did three seasons with Eldorado IHC. After a break of 4 years from fire, where I got my degree and worked in business development, I decided I had to come back and currently am working for Oregon Department of Forestry as a Forest Officer. In ODF I got introduced to drones being used in fire and decided I needed to get into that and help push it forward, which led me to working with Drone Amplified and the IGNIS firing system. Currently I work in the off season as the west coast representative for the company, and help push sales, training development, and program integration for our system, the IGNIS.

If anyone wants to get in contact with questions, or to set up a demonstration, they can contact me phone or email:

30 Mar 2020Fitness, Staying Sane, and Mental Health During COVID w/Dr. Anthony Harrell01:23:34

Former Ukonom Hotshot turned Doctorate of Physical Therapy, Anthony Harrell stops by to talk about preseason fitness, quarantine mental health, and staying somewhat sane during COVID-19...

Dr. Harrell has a physical therapy practice based in California and graduated from the University of California, San Francisco - During his time there he studied the effects of cross training on injury risk reduction and performance variables on wildland firefighters...

More recently, he used his experiences from wildland firefighting and physiotherapy to cofound "The Human Resilience Project" - A platform where people can become their most resilient self and achieve their full capacity with whatever they pursue! He is really into the idea of tribalism in societies, so he decided to empower his tribe with the Human Resilience Project!

"At The Human Resilience Project, we focus on using educational content to empower every person who wants to create a better future themselves. It matters less of where you started versus what you are doing now to be better tomorrow."

You can find Dr. Harrell at the following:

Ayahuasca and other hallucinogenic substances are a powerful, and potentially very beneficial, means of therapy under the right circumstances... But, these are ancient substances that absolutely need to be treated with respect.

I will say that this route of healing may seem a little "far fetched" for some, and may not be for everyone... However, I can say that if this kind of thing is "up your alley", and you are open minded enough to experience this journey - By all means, please seek the Wildland Wellness Foundation out for more information!

24 Oct 2022"F*** Cancer" - with Kaleena and Matt Lynde02:26:11

The Eldorado National Forest is in the house, again!

Today on the Anchor Point Podcast: We have the fire "power couple", Kaleena and Matt Lynde, to talk about some of the lesser known career paths in wildland fire, working as a public information officer, fire aviation, and to tell the story of overcoming this shitty thing known as cancer...

Kaleena and Matt Lynde met while at WFTC, and started dating after apprenticeship academy. Kaleena headed to an apprentice position on Shasta Lake Hotshots and Matt went to a squad boss position with Big Hill Helitack.

At the end of that season, Kaleena was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer - Matt took on that battle with her.... Now that they have been together for over 16 years, Kaleena is cancer free and they are still in fire... Working their way through different operational fire and aviation positions.

These folks are the prime example of two people helping make the other person the best version of themselves.

05 Oct 2023The Humanity Behind Wildland Firefighting Through “Hotshot” With Gabriel Kirkpatrick Mann02:59:03

When discussing or covering wildfire situations, most people and media outlets focus more on their destruction rather than the humanity behind it. In this episode, Brandon Dunham sits down with Gabriel Kirkpatrick Mann to discuss the making of his cinematic masterpiece documentary "Hotshot," which tells the story of some of the most elite, the most hardened, and the most skilled men and women on the fireline. He talks about the movie’s six-year filming process, which involved catching firefighters in action and getting in the middle of the most dangerous wildfire areas. He explains how the documentary can help reshape public perception about wildfire, shifting the focus to firefighters’ pay and experiences. Gabriel also discusses why he avoided tackling climate change in “Hotshot” and how to get rid of dirty politics when it comes to wildfire fighting.

Tune in to the original wildland firefighting and wildland firefighter culture podcast, "The Anchor Point Podcast," to learn more about the awesome and ever-evolving world of wildland firefighting. 10 Aug 2020Reedley College w/ Adam Hernandez00:59:29

We all want a leg up on the competition, especially if you are trying to get your foot in the door with wildland fire. Thats why we have folks like former Kings River IHC Captain, Adam Hernandez, on the show to help!

Adam Hernandez is the Wildland Fire Technology Instructor at Reedley College located in Central California near the foothills of the Central Sierras. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and has earned a Certificate of Achievement from Humboldt State University in Fire Management.

Adam spent 17 years with the US Forest Service prior to leaving the agency in 2019. The majority of his experiences in fire were centered around work on hotshot crews and fuels management with additional experiences as a smokejumper in McCall Idaho.

Early on in Adam’s career his mentors and influences encouraged regular involvement with training and development while considering the value of leadership and human factors in the wildland fire service. Most recently he was involved with the development and delivery of the R-5 Primary Leader Academy Leadership Curriculum. This interest in human factors, leadership, training and development over the course of his career has been the driving factor in his transition to become an educator in wildland fire.

Adam has a publication in the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station for a hypothesis study he conducted that studied the value of the NWCG Leadership curriculum to the Wildland Fire Service since its implementation in the early 2000s.

Adam remains connected to the wildland fire organization and keeps his operational skill sharp by working as an Administratively Determined (AD) firefighter during the summers.  All assignments are welcomed from DIVS, TFLD, FAL1, CRWB to his preferred, grunt hotshot crewmember.

Adam’s goal is to support the wildland fire organization by providing quality candidates for wildland fire and fuels crews and to deliver training for entry level crewmembers up to the Senior Firefighter level.

11 Oct 2021 Community, Duty, and Integrity w/Jeff Dupras02:35:24

Being a Division Chief is a difficult job... Especially when your forest has been on the receiving end of catastrophic fires for the past five years... Thats why we have Plumas National Forest Division Chief, Jeff Dupras, on the show today to talk about his experiences.

Jeff has 31 years in the wildland fire service, and has seen a lot of change over the years. Particularly, the changes in fire behavior and  impacts to communities nested in the wildland urban interface.

He has also seen a dramatic change in the perception of the public when it comes to wildfire. Oftentimes leading to wild conspiracy theories, distrust, and a slew of other things.

His mission is to build a better understanding of wildfire, increase transparency, be an advocate for his community, and always be in the corner of the "boots on the ground".

You know the drill...

15 Jun 2021"Its All Part Of The Gig" - W/ Charles Vaught02:16:06

Today take a much less serious approach to the show - We sit down for a hilarious live reading of some of the passages from Charles Vaught's book, State of Fire...

Here's what his book is all about:

State of Fire "pulls back the curtain on the mysteries of those who go toe-to-toe in battles with Nature, exposing various overlooked aspects of what it means and takes to fight wildfire. From the raw physicality of the job, to the job’s transformational qualities, to the extreme camaraderie earned along the way; State of fire explores the toll that wildland firefighters pay both physically, mentally, socially and of course, the toll it takes on their love lives. Within these pages wildland firefighters are not “hero-ized” role models sanitized of any shred of truth, but portrayed with all of their flaws, egos, weaknesses, and baggage, giving the reader a better understanding of not only the of the people who go into the wild lands of America and fight fire, but the realities of the job itself."

His book explores the many life lessons learned in wildland fire, the good, the bad, the ugly, and the oftentimes hilarious. It definitely isn't a sanitized version of his experiences, and it may not be for everyone - But there are many themes to be discovered within the collection of his essays...

12 Apr 2021Perspectives of a Former Hotshot Superintendent w/ Aaron Humphrey 03:07:13

Aaron Humphrey is not only a generational wildland firefighter, but also a wildland firefighter (forestry technician) with 25 years of experience in the game. He worked his way up from a seasonal forestry tech on an engine, all the way to Interagency Hotshot Superintendent with Eldorado Hotshots. He also served as the Hotshot Committee chairman during his time with Eldorado IHC...

Today on the show, we talk about how his parents worked for the USFS, how he got started in fire, the changes that he saw (and experienced) over the years, and the reasons why he eventually moved on to a different agency after 25 years...

His wife, Rachael, joins us on the show today to also talk about her side of the story and the struggles involved with being a Hotshot wife...

"Hump" is one hell of a mentor, an excellent leader, and continues to lead with his involvement with the Grassroots Wildland Firefighters organization...

08 Mar 2022Life Outside of the Federal Service w/ Monica Tanner01:16:55

Ask yourself this question, and answer it honestly: Have you ever thought about leaving federal service?

If you have, did it invoke a feeling of anxiety? Are you scared that you will lose "street cred"? Are you too comfortable with what you do now to pursue other things? Are you always trying to get that coveted perm position? Are you apprehensive to apply to anything else because "this is all I know"?

How many opportunities have you passed up due to these reasons?

Well - that's why we have former USFS helitack turned county firefighter, Monica Tanner, on the show today to talk about this very topic!

Monica started off in the USFS as a seasonal firefighter. After a handful of years, she realized that she was ineligible to get that "coveted" permanent position due to the 37 and a 1/2 rule (yes, there is a maximum age rule for getting a permanent position with the feds)... So, with the guidance of her overhead, she had to make the move beyond the feds to find a new career opportunity.

Disclaimer: This is not intended to be adversarial or as a "Hey, you should leave your job" at all... It's merely Monica's experience in taking the leap into an other career path...

So, for anyone considering leaving - I hope this helps your decision!

09 Nov 2020Take Care of Your Crap! w/Brian Sanchez01:17:30

Every wonder where all the fire packs get rounded up and shipped off to get repaired at the end of the season?

Well, today on the show, we talk about just that! Brian Sanchez is the dude that is in charge of fixing all the broken, burned, and scuffed up fireline packs from you folks in the field! Brian has been at Mystery Ranch for damn near 10 years. He started out on the sewing floor, and now he is in charge of the warranty and repair department...

Make no mistake, he keeps a list of the crews that are notorious for beating the hell out of their packs - He's even tossing around the idea of making a "hall of fame" for those poor, abused, and neglected fire packs.

Moral of the story: take care of your stuff!

27 Oct 2022Sex, Relationships, and First Responders with Destiny Morris, AMFT02:00:04

Full disclaimer, this episode is pretty NSFW (Not Safe For Work)!

Lets be honest with ourselves for a hot second - The topic of sex is pretty taboo...

Many folks out there tend to shy around the subject, and even worse: They don't communicate to their partners about the subject. This can cause problems in the bedroom, which can cause other issues within the relationship... And being in a relationship with a Wildland Firefighter - or, being a Wildland Firefighter in a relationship - Can be difficult at times... (especially with the lack of communication and no cell phone service)

That's why we have Associate Family and Marriage Therapist, Destiny Morris, on the show to have an honest, candid, and "life pro-tip" conversation about healthy relationships and a healthy sex life...

Here's a little more about Destiny:

"Destiny Morris is an associate marriage and family therapist who specializes in first responders and their families!

In this podcast we will be discussing sex and first responder relationships- the common struggles as well as tips and tricks to keep the fire alive. Destiny has a remote private practice in Santa Barbara, California, and can see anyone in the state of California."

Destiny is one rad therapist, and an advocate for healthy relationships in the first responder community... If you want to find out more about her, or get a visit with her practice - Check out the following links:

Instagram - On_Being_Resilient

Psychology Today - Destiny Morris

I know we primarily talk about male/female relationships in this episode... But, the things we talk about are genuinely universal in nature - no matter what love looks like for you- I just hope this episode helps you folks (in any kind of relationship, or playing the field) to have a better love life, and hopefully "spice it up" in the bedroom...

Also - Consider taking a look at that book I mentioned...

It's called, "The Adventure Challenge... In Bed" if you're looking to spice it up in the bedroom... Don't worry, its not a "zero-to-kinky shit" kind of book (its pretty tame, actually) - Its more like actually fun (adult) stuff you and your partner can do to better understand each other sexually, and zero in on what gets you and your partner going... (Trust me, its fun)

You know the drill...

Stay safe, stay savage...

Enjoy!

09 May 2023"Nevada Hotshot and Handcrew Superintendents Tell It How It Is" with JP, Chase, Justin, and Kris01:49:13

Welcome to The Anchor Point Podcast, episode 118! In this episode, we delve into the world of wildland firefighting with a focus on the Nevada Bureau of Land Management Handcrews and Interagency Hotshot Crews.

Our guests for this episode include JP Blair, Justin Zabala, Kris Bruington, and Chase Maness, all experienced Hotshots who have worked on the frontlines of some of the toughest wildfires in the country. We talk about their experiences as members of these elite firefighting teams, how they have seen the industry evolve over the years, and the direction the industry is heading with the new changes on the horizon.

We also have an honest and candid conversation about the following topics:

  • Changes in crew dynamics from the "old school" to the "new school" and the impact it has had on the job.
  • Operational changes and how they have had to adapt these changes.
  • Moving away from chasing hazard and overtime pay, and how the focus has shifted to safety and taking care of the human component of fire.
  • The importance of saving and not blowing all your money you made in the summer.
  • The toll firefighting can take on mental health and the importance of support systems both during and after the job.

Finally, we explore the role of social media in firefighting and how it can be used for "clout chasing" or for a greater good. Our guests provide examples of how social media can be leveraged to educate the public on fire safety and prevention.

The guests on this episode are all current or former Interagency Hotshot Crew or Handcrew superintendents, here's a little about these rad individuals:

JP Blair - Superintendent of Vegas Valley Veterans Crew, US Marine, and former Del Rosa Interagency Hotshot Asst. Supt.

Justin Zabala - Current Assistant Superintendent, soon to be Supt. of Ruby Mountain Hotshots.

Kris Bruington - Fire Operations Coordinator for the NV BLM, former Lone Peak IHC Superintendent.

Chase Maness - Eastern Nevada Agency BIA Fire Management Officer, former Midnight Suns and Ruby Mountain IHC Superintendent.

I Just want to say to these guys are awesome, and I also want to extend a huge thank you for being on the show!

16 May 2022Reprisal With Pedro Rios01:55:16

There is a very legitimate fear when it comes to reprisal and retribution within the federal workplace. It may not be every wildland firefighter that may experience it, but many have...

That's why we have wildland firefighter, Pedro Rios, stops by on the show today to tell his story about reprisal, the lawsuit, and the lengthy process to resolution...

Keep in mind that this episode is HIS story along with some of the publicly available court documents that outline and support the content of this episode.

These documents can be found here:

They explain the complex and technical nature of creating a wildland firefighting PPE that fits and performs WAY better. 05 Sep 2021"Wildfire Fire Saved My Life" w/ Mark Booker02:49:35

Ronald Mark Booker Jr. is an air attack and former Plumas Hotshot smokejumper from Venice Beach, CA...

His entry into fire is not your "traditional" wildland firefighter story... His entry into the wildland firefighting scene in the 90's, was through the California Division of Forestry's youth authority program. Through this program, Mark developed skills to turn his experience into a life long career with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management fighting fire.

Without question, Mark will say that "fire saved his life"...

This is Mark's story of fire, life, culture, surfing, hardship, "cornballs", and how fire saved his life...

01 Jul 2019Injury and Recovery w/ Dr. Anthony Harrell01:03:06

Former Ukonom Hotshot and practicing physical therapist, Dr. Anthony Harrell DPT, is on the show today to talk about injuries, recovery, and fitness!

06 Jul 2023Understanding Wildfire Culture From A Human Perspective With Ben Iverson01:28:59

Beyond the massive destruction caused by wildfires are the people who risk their lives just to put them out. In this episode, Ben Iverson of the Forest Service shares with Brandon Dunham a glimpse of the wildfire culture beyond the protocols and into its relatable human aspects. He talks about their project Meta Review, which looks back on the commonalities and differences of past wildfire events to find their most valuable lessons that could help improve fire response and address the poor education on wildfires. Ben also explains how they use focus groups to gather real-life experiences from firefighters to improve their catalog and encourage their colleagues to open up even their most harrowing wildfire encounters.

07 Jun 2022The Great Exodus Of Wildland Fire With Bre Orcasitas01:49:40

Former Smokejumper and Hotshot, Bre Orcasitas, is on the show to talk in greater detail about her (extremely well written) article called, "The Great Exodus"... Today on the show: Bre goes into greater detail on why wildland firefighters are leaving federal service at an unsustainable pace...

"The Great Exodus" is an incredibly well written exposé, taking in Bre's observations, shared peer experiences, and first hand reasons for leaving the federal fire service. Her article has made waves within the wildland firefighting community, and only continues to make accurate predictions of the fate of the federal wildland firefighting workforce.

A little about Bre:

Bre is a wife, mother, former smokejumper, former hotshot, and "Jill of all trades" with her diverse experience in the realm of wildland firefighting... She is also a domestic and international traveler, foodie, empath, conservationist, knowledge seeker, outdoor enthusiast, and aficionado of good coffee and baked goods...

Bre also is a astute writer and blogger who has been featured on The Smokey Generation, Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center, and other major news organizations...

07 Jun 2021Have A Plan For The Off Season w/ Shannon Mead01:54:19

EAP can be a joke... If you want real, quality, and culturally competent clinicians that specialize in the world of first responders; you're gonna have to search for it...

Good thing for you?  You get to meet one of those folks today on the show as we talk all about the specialized nature of mental health with wildland firefighters and first responders.

Shannon Mead is a local clinician here in Reno, Nevada who specializes in this caveat of practice...

Heres a little more about Shannon:

Call her, email her, do whatever you need to do to take care of yourselves before, during, and after the fire season!

Hope everyone is doing well...

You know the drill...

22 Nov 2021Two Yellow Lines w/ Zac Titus01:41:28

If you haven't seen the new "fire" movie, "Two Yellow Lines" - You need to stop what you're doing, and watch it...

This isn't necessarily a "fire" movie in the context of actual "firefighting", but more along the lines of the inconvenient truths about the mental health components that can be associated with a fire career...

The most incredible part of this film? It tells a vivid story of what wildland firefighters experience, without showing a SINGLE scene of "Hollywood-ized hero complex" firefighting...

The story revolves around a Smokejumper who was involved with a tragedy fire, the PTSI as a result of the incident, his estranged daughter, and the long journey to recovery and healing.

This is why we have the producer, writer, and lead actor, Zac Titus, on the show today to give us the breakdown of the film that is making waves across the fire community!

Take a listen to this episode, then watch the film - Or watch the film and then listen to this episode... Either way - This film is the real highlight of the talking points in the episode...

You can find this incredible film here:

14 Mar 2022"Don't Let Your Friends Self Destruct" With Jesse Morelock01:18:29

Wildland firefighting tends to have a very "work hard, play harder" mentality surrounding the culture... And unfortunately, the "play harder" can be the part that gets the best of people.

Lets all just take a step back to our own shoes for a second and really analyze the culture... Now that you've thought about it a little; it seems like drinking and wildland firefighting are kind of normalized in our culture, huh? How many times have you gone out on a rage post assignment? How many times have you had that "Hotshot money" at the end of the season and blew a significant portion of it on nights out at the bar with your friends?

I know I have done it... And chances are, you have too.

That's why we have former Interagency Hotshot, Jesse Morelock, on the show to talk about when the fun and catharsis goes way too far, and his story about the potential dangers of alcohol.

For all of you listening to this, take some notes and have a bit of a self reflection into your decisions and lifestyle - Because they may lead you to the verge of a downward spiral...

And as Jesse says on this episode: "Don't let your friends self destruct, don't be an enabler"...

You know the drill...

Stay safe, stay savage...

Enjoy!

If you have any questions for Jesse, you can find him here on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mrmountainlion/

06 Apr 2020Fire Boots Round Two w/ JK Boots00:59:35

Tell your friends, tell your rookies, tell your crew - JK Boots is back on the show and better than ever!

Will and Tim Khadzi are on the show today to talk about everything regarding boots... Everything from construction, maintenance, care, materials, and most importantly; BREAKING THEM IN!!!!

I particularly love these guys and this company because they are excellent in quality, made of the best all American materials, and they actually care and are very passionate about their craft...

Also, here's a little disclaimer about my relationship with JK Boots - I want to be transparent with you guys and say that these guys DO NOT sponsor the podcast! - I genuinely just believe in their company and their mission to build better boots!

Here is a little about JK Boots:

Tim and Will say: "Our founder John Khadzhi started his career and his teenage years and he became an apprentice cobbler in a nearby town overseas where he grew up. He excelled quickly his craft and knowledge of hand building boots. In 1994, while in his late 20s, he move to the Pacific Northwest bringing along his skills, honesty, and Craftsmanship. He’s been building boots ever since.

Earning a high reputation, John began his own boot company, “JK Boots”. His sons Jason, William and Tim were born in Salem, Oregon and Spokane, Washington. All four are now boot makers working together. JK Boots is a 100% family owned and operated business. They have made a name for themselves amongst firefighters, loggers, welders, farmers, and the like, all throughout the Pacific Northwest and the country."

These guys are awesome, and they pour a lot of heart into the boots that we rely on in the field...

02 Dec 2019Save Alberta Rappel w/Adam Clyne00:44:48

Some things will always baffle me - like taking a multi-mission capable helicopter program and throwing it in the trash can. This short sighted decision was made after 3 back, to back, to back insane fire seasons...

Today on the show - We have Adam Clyne, a spotter from the Alberta Rappellers on the show to share how we can save this valuable program...

Alberta's wildfire rappel program has been axed by the provincial government in order to cut cost, yet the 23 million dollar price tag of the savings doesn't make any sense compared to the potential of saving hundreds of millions of dollars by stopping small fires before they go big...

The "RAP" program has been in place for 36 years, and employs 63 firefighters every fire season, not including the support staff or pilots for these programs. The overall objective for the "RAP" crews is to insert firefighters into the fire via helicopter rappel and aggressively attack small fires soon after detection to keep the fires from growing into large, catastrophic fires... In addition to this, they provide: Fireline emergency medical services, search and rescue operations, and hazardous fuels reduction across the entire province of Alberta...

16 Mar 2020Alaska, The Environment, And Fire-Ideas by "Booze"01:43:42

Yes, his last name is actually "Booze"!

Micah Booze is a Wildland Firefighter who resides in AK... His endeavors have taken him around the United States and he's had the opportunity to make some badass contacts. He is all about the power of networking and "thinking outside the box" to help spread ideas and get things done...

He is also all about being better stewards of the land, and actually practicing what we preach when it comes to helping preserve Mother Nature. One thing that really ticks him off is people who don't bury their poop when they are in the wilderness - Thats why he is launching the A.S.S movement this week!

The A.S.S (Anti Surface S***ing) movement is an effort to raise awareness and ultimately negate the nasty effects of "Surface Sh**ing" while on public lands and in wilderness areas!

Besides that, here is a little more about Micah:

* Alaskan for 5yrs - from beautiful Kenai Peninsula.
* Started in Fire 15yrs ago. I’ve worked at least a season in every Region but 6, and worked for every agency but Fish.
* (Played basketball with Jamie Foxx once)
* I’m a huge proponent of thinking outside the box and when it comes to Fire and ideas to solve our challenging issues in the field.
* HEQB is favorite position to perform in Fire.
* I subscribe to the Will Rogers “Never met anyone I didn’t like.” And the Dale Carnegie “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” approaches on how to treat people and make things happen.
* I’m just unrolling the A.S.S. Movement™️
* I’m looking to get a podcast going hopefully by next off season.

Thank you to anyone who has ever helped a firefighter while they were not working!
Cheers!

You can find Booze on IG at @Booze_and_Fire

Hope you enjoy the show!

20 Jun 2022AWE And The Smokey Generation With Bethany Hannah01:34:22

Wildland firefighters tend to be a magnanimous, larger than life, and compassionate crowd... Our stories, legacies, triumphs, and tribulations  are oftentimes passed along through a very tribal, and (almost exclusively) verbal means.

That's where The American Wildfire Experience comes in... To catalog and preserve this verbal history through digital storytelling...

The American Wildfire Experience is a nonprofit organization who's roots are deep within the wildland firefighting community. Its primary mission is to support the wildland firefighters, and the communities they serve, by capturing the story of wildfire through digital media...

Today on The Anchor Point Podcast: We get to hear the history of the AWE and The Smokey Generation's start, its purpose, its future projects, and we get to announce the winners of the 2022 Smokey Generation Micro-Grants.

A little about Bethany:

"Bethany Hannah is the executive director of the American Wildfire Experience and founder of The Smokey Generation. She has been involved in the wildland fire community since 1998 and has a passion for empowering others to take bold action.

The American Wildfire Experience (AWE) is a small non-profit rooted in understanding, examining, and telling the story of wildland fire. Our mission is to support wildland firefighters and the communities they serve."

Congratulations to all of the recipients of the AWE/Smokey Generation Micro-grant award winners this year! I look forward to seeing all of the projects come to fruition, and preserved in a digital space.

Also, I want to say:  "The Anchor Point Podcast would like to thank the AWE, it's board members, and Bethany Hannah for the honor of being awarded the 'AWE 2022 Ralph Langlois Impact Award' for mental health focus... This is a huge honor, and my gratitude is beyond measure!

In honor of the people that, both past and present, lived and breathed the hardships of fighting wildland fire - I would like to dedicate this award to the people that struggle, or have struggled, with mental health challenges and the darkness that you may have experienced... I especially wish to honor and dedicate this award to the friends, mentors, and fire family that are no longer with us.

For everyone out there: Always know that there are many peaks and valleys in our journey of life... And as my good friend, Ben Strahan, has said before: 'The valleys are a dark and low place... But, what's the strange beauty of the dark and lowly valley's of our lives? Well, the only place we can look from there, is up'.

In acceptance of this award - I will be donating the full amount of the grant back to the AWE so that someone else may be able to build upon the foundation of this project that preserves the legacy, and tells the story, of the many wildland firefighters across the globe who go unrecognized in their efforts..."

You know the drill...

Stay safe, stay savage...

Enjoy!

30 Sep 2021Redmond Hotshots w/ Gabe Mason and Jordan Gulley 01:31:21

As a Redmond IHC alumni, I cannot begin to explain the incredible experience that I had with Redmond Hotshots. So, that's why I have Superintendent Gabe Mason and Asst. Superintendent Jordan Gulley from Redmond IHC sit down to chat about one of the four Leadership Training and Development Hotshot crews in the nation...

In August 1960, the Washington Office authorized the establishment of the first inter-regional crew in the Pacific Northwest, which became the Redmond Hotshot Crew. The crew functioned as a regular hotshot crew with temporary crewmembers from 1960 through 1980.

The Redding Interagency Hotshot Crew based in California was the first organization to use the developmental detail-training concept for permanent employees. The number of interested applicants however, far exceeded the quota offered to the Pacific Northwest. The increasing number of interested candidates, along with the 1977 fire fatality of Okanogan Assistant Fire Management Officer Ron Neely on the Gibson Creek Fire, served to support the establishment of a detail crew in the Pacific Northwest.

In 1981, Redmond IHC was converted to a leadership developmental training crew. From 1981 to the present, the Redmond Interagency Hotshot Crew Leadership Development Program has provided the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, State Natural Resource Agencies, the Forest Services of Mexico, U.S.S.R., France, and New Zealand with both fireground and classroom training opportunities in fire and fuels.

Here is a little more about Gabe and Jordan:

Gabe Mason:

"I grew up in Roseburg, Oregon and I began my career on the Diamond Lake Ranger District after achieving my Bachelors of Science, majoring in Kinesiology at Oregon State University. I have served as a Prineville hotshot, Alaska smokejumper, and Rogue Siskiyou and Deschutes National Forest crew supervisor. I currently operate as the Redmond interagency hotshot crew superintendent, and am actively involved in the leadership develop courses at the regional level. I love my time with family, coaching sports, drawing, and studying anthropology."

Jordan Gulley:

"Jordan began his career on the Tonasket RD in 2007. While completing his studies at Washington State University he accepted an apprentice position on the Paisley R.D. in 2010and attended Academy 52 the same year. Over his career, Jordan has worked on a Type 2 IA Crews, Hotshot Crews, Helitack Crews, and  Engines.

Jordan is passionate about training & promoting diversity. He serves as a Stress First Aid Trainer, Regional Lead Instructor and is the African American Special Emphasis Program Manager on the Deschutes NF. Jordan strives to continue to make an impact within his communities.

He is thankful to his inner circle, which includes his wife and three daughters, who allow him to chase his dreams."

09 Apr 2023The Hotshot Up Foundation with Anthony Powers01:59:17

Welcome to another episode of The Anchor Point Podcast! In today's episode, we have special guest, Anthony Powers, a former hotshot hailing from Southern California. He has risen through the ranks to become a Captain with the Forest Service, and is now serving as a firefighter for the city of Burbank, CA. Anthony is also the President of the non-profit organization, Hotshot Up, which is dedicated to supporting firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Join us as we delve into Anthony's remarkable journey of service and learn more about Hotshot Up's mission and impact.

Anthony Powers is a true Southern California native, born and raised in the region. His passion for firefighting started early on, and he pursued it with unwavering determination. Anthony's career spans across the Angeles National Forest, where he honed his firefighting expertise, and now he serves as a firefighter for the city of Burbank, CA, a role he took on in 2020.

In addition to his role as a firefighter, Anthony is also the President of Hotshot Up, a non-profit organization with a noble mission. Hotshot Up is dedicated to supporting firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty, particularly those who have fallen while battling wildfires. The organization was officially established as a non-profit in December 2020, but its roots trace back to 2017 when it was founded as the Dalton Hotshots.

Hotshot Up's mission is to provide support, assistance, and resources to the families and loved ones of fallen firefighters. They aim to offer financial and practical support during the difficult times following the loss of a firefighter in the line of duty. The organization understands the unique challenges faced by the firefighting community and seeks to alleviate some of the burdens through their programs and initiatives.

Anthony is grateful for the unwavering support of his family and everyone who believes in Hotshot Up's mission. He acknowledges the contributions of his team and partners who have worked tirelessly to make a positive difference in the lives of fallen firefighters' families. Their combined efforts and dedication have made Hotshot Up a formidable force in supporting the firefighting community.

Anthony's journey from being a So Cal hotshot to becoming a firefighter and President of Hotshot Up is pretty rad. His passion for firefighting and commitment to serving the public and the fire community is commendable. Hotshot Up's mission to support families who have experienced the tragedy of an LODD is making a meaningful impact, and Anthony is grateful for the support he has received.

09 Mar 2020Paradigm Shift in Health and Wellness w/ Fernado Montes01:45:30

Today's episode is an thought exercise where we bring up the discussion of what we can do better on the topic of overall fitness, health, and wellness.

We often get caught up in the status quo when it comes to approaching firefighter fitness, health, and wellness - and in its in my humble opinion that it needs to be addressed and improved...

Thats why we have today's episode with Fernando Montes, the exercise physiologist for LACoFD, on the show today to have a discussion about why we are doing it wrong and what we can do to make it better for the federal Wildland service...

Before coming to the LACoFD Fire Department, Fernando worked in human performance for three decades - including work with top D1 college athletic programs and tactical athletic development for special operations forces. Now he is the go to guy to for developing new systems based off of real world data to improve the lives and performance of Wildland Firefighters in the field...

If you want to get ahold of Fernando, or want to inquire about a seminar, you can contact him here:

Hope you guys enjoy the show!
