15 May 2022 | Renting Overlanding Equipment VS Buying It - What Makes Sense for You? | 00:18:18
This week, I'm hanging out with Curt Thompson of GTFOverland. He runs an Overlanding shop in SoCal that rents equipment for Overlanding so that people can try stuff out before they buy. So, this was the perfect topic to tackle with him. 03 Jul 2022 | Soft VS Rigid Storage for Overlanding - What Makes Sense For Your Set Up? (Backpacks, RUX, Pelican) | 00:30:30
This week, I'm joined by Tony Richardson, the creator of the RUX soft bin/bag. I've historically always run rigid cases like plano crates, plano gun cases, Apache cases from Harbor Freight, Pelican style cases, etc. However, there are some downsides to those options so when I saw this RUX bag, I reached out to the company because I had to learn more about it. It fits between a soft duffle bag or back pack and rigid storage cases but has many of the benefits of both without most of the downsides. Tony and I talk through the pros and cons of each option this week to help you determine which options make the most sense for your set up! 18 Sep 2022 | How Do People Afford Full Time Overlanding? (Best Jobs, Top Side Hustles, and More) | 00:18:31
This week I've been noticing a lot of posts on Overlanding Facebook groups and forums where people were asking what kind of jobs people had to do in order to afford to Overland full time, or at least more often than they felt like they could. I'm going to talk a bit about what I saw on the forums, but then dive into my experience and how I've changed my whole career trajectory over the last 5 years since I've started Overlanding and camping more to support that lifestyle. I'm sure there are a lot of you out there that are living that dream too, so pop over to Facebook, Instagram, or the Patreon group and post up what you're doing to live the dream! If you enjoy the podcast and wouldn’t mind, I’d be extremely thankful if you left a 5 star review on whatever podcast platform you listen on! Thanks and have a great week! Believe it or not, but if you've never been, there are a ton of super fun things to do! In this episode, I'm going to go through some of the fun and interesting stuff that you can expect on an Overlanding trip. On this episode, I wanted to touch on the value of “Leave No Trace” as well as some people’s behaviors in real life and particularly online. As with all of my vlogs, the goal isn’t to “blow up the internet” or start a fight, just a conversation. 25 Aug 2019 | S1E11-Cooking Basics (Coleman stove, utensils, pots and pans, Mountain House, canned food, camping) | 00:22:58
On today's Podcast, I'm talking about the basics of cooking while Overlanding. There are a few things you need to think about like gear you'll need based on the complexity of what you're going to cook. You'll also need to think about what kind of storage is required based on what you want to make. For example, if you're cooking very complex things, you'll need additional pots, pans, utensils, storage containers, perhaps a fridge/freezer. You'll need bigger and more capable cooking surfaces like a Skottle or double burner stove. Or, you can go super basic, and just bring Mountain House meals that basically require you to boil some water and pour it into a bag and you're done. If you are looking to build your cooking gear collection, here are links to the items specifically mentioned in this episode. 23 Oct 2022 | How to Dispersed Camp in National Forests (Especially Hoosier National Forest) | 00:17:12
Being an Indiana native, I get a lot of questions about Indiana Hoosier National Forest because it's kind of my stomping grounds. So, this week, I wanted to talk somewhat specifically about Hoosier National Forest and how to get out exploring and dispersed camping in it. However, the stuff I'm going to discuss is general enough that it pretty much applies to most National Forests, so it should be helpful for everyone. If you're wanting some suggestions for things that would help make dispersed camping easier, here are some of the things I mentioned in the video with links. 21 Aug 2022 | Old School Vs New School Overlanding Gear - Which is Better? | 00:16:12
I was having a discussion with a buddy a few weeks ago about the advantages of some of the newer, more modern tools and pieces of gear you can get related to Overlanding. But the more we discussed, the more we also started to see a lot of downsides to the newer stuff. That made me think of the topic for this week's episode. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of both the newest, highest tech gear vs. some of the more old school, mechanical types of gear. Is a compass better than GPS in certain instances? Is an electric water pump better than a simple spigot? These are the questions we'll chat through to help you think critically about your set up and when to go high tech vs. low tech. If you enjoy the podcast and wouldn’t mind, I’d be extremely thankful if you left a 5 star review on whatever podcast platform you listen on! Thanks and have a great week! 30 Jul 2023 | Two Types of Overlanding: Experience VS. Goal Oriented Exploring (Which do you prefer?) | 00:14:59
In this week's episode, I recently returned from a 2 week long trip where we covered thousands of miles and it really made me think about the reason we do this thing called Overlanding. It seems to me that there are two types of Overlanding. Experience based, where we focus more on having fun and finding new things and less about hitting certain points or achieving trail "completion" and then the Goal oriented version which is basically the opposite. Granted, you'll have experiences in both types and you'll get to explore and see lots of amazing things, but to me, it's more about the focus of your journey. So, today I wanted to talk through those thoughts a bit and also wanted to hear from you all! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! 22 Oct 2023 | The Basics: Things to Think About When Outfitting and Payload Strategies for Overlanders | 00:09:03
I've been seeing some more and more talk about payload when outfitting and setting up Overlanding builds. Honestly, this isn't a topic I've thought about a ton in the past as I always assumed that even with an RTT and drawer system, I wouldn't be anywhere near the max payload. However, there's a lot to think about and a lot of factors that go into payload and how your vehicle carries it. So, in this episode of the podcast, I'm going to talk a bit about that to hopefully plant a seed with other newer Overlanders to think about this issue and to make good decisions. As I mentioned in the episode, Nathan at Outdoor Auto has a really great episode diving much deeper into payload, so if you want to learn significantly more, check out his video here and subscribe to his channel because he makes great content: https://youtu.be/_eOBiZcU3sg?si=c076YroIUB_5Yk-8 A huge thanks to my featured partners: Kenda Tires (my favorite tires): http://bit.ly/3YSwrlh REDARC (all kinds of trick power management solutions): https://bit.ly/3rt1ZiB Northology Adventures (Sign up for their FREE monthly magazine and check out their events!): https://bit.ly/3iww7Ue Click here to join the Patreon community for exclusive content and access to the Discord channel: https://www.patreon.com/allthingsoverlanding Click here to get a patches or stickers: https://allthingsoverlanding.com/shop/ For a full list of my gear, check out this page for quick reference links: https://allthingsoverlanding.com/gear/ Looking for budget light bars, rock lights, and LED strips for your rig? 24 Sep 2023 | Overlanding Simplified: Don't Stress, Just Explore | 00:15:20
On this week's episode of the podcast, I keep seeing a ton of people arguing about what Overlanding is or isn't and who's doing it on all the Overlanding related group on Facebook. Which reminded me that I just got back from a 5 day trip through Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan where we dispersed camped every night and while I could have worried about whether it was technically Overlanding or not, I didn't. I just went, had fun, and explored. So, I wanted to talk a bit about why you should stop worrying about what everything thinks "counts" and just go explore. And if you're new to Overlanding and it seem intimidating, I've got some helpful tips to get you over that fear or concern so you can learn to get further and further out there in the future! 05 Feb 2023 | Exploring the Great Outdoors: Is a Weekend Overlanding Trip Worth an 8+ Hour Drive? | 00:11:49
In this week's episode, I'm talking through why I think it is often worth it to drive 8+ hours for a weekend Overlanding trip. I get that question quite a bit from folks asking how I can justify driving 6, 8, or more hours away for a trip that often only lasts a couple of day. So, I'm going to talk through why I do these long trips, how I make them work and try to maximize the value I get from them, and how I account for and justify the expense. If you want to join the conversation, check out the links below and come hang out wherever you'd like! 19 Sep 2021 | S3E36 - Instead of "What is Overlanding?" How About "Why Overlanding?" and "Is it right for you?" | 00:16:16
So many videos out there (including some I've made) are simply a video version of a definition of what Overlanding is. When I search YouTube for the term "Overlanding," all I see are things like "Overlanding 101" and "What is Overlanding?" So, on this week's episode, I wanted to talk more about why I think Overlanding may be right for you. If you've listened to me before, I've done an episode or two on Why Overlanding is Awesome, but since I've learned a decent amount in the last couple. years of doing this, I wanted to revisit "Why Overlanding Might Be Right For You." Hope you enjoy it and, especially if you're new, that it's helpful for you! 02 Apr 2023 | Classic vs Modern Overlanding Vehicles: Pros and Cons | 00:21:53
This week I'm talking with my buddy Gari from the YouTube Channel Gee from BC about new versus old rigs. I've historically been a "save money by buying older used rigs" person, but with some problems with the truck over the last year and dealing with a daily and the rig, I've started to wonder about the pros and cons of newer vehicles versus the older ones. To add even more value to the convo, Gari talks about his experiences and what he thinks about newer versus older vehicles. So, if you're considering a new rig or an upgrade, this episode should be helpful for you! 14 Feb 2021 | S3E7-Why I Love Overlanding (Experiences, Shared Stories, Freedom, Expression of Who You Are) | 00:20:23
On this episode of the podcast/vlog, I wanted to talk about something that not a lot of YouTubers talk about. There's more to this whole "Overlanding" thing than just gear, trips, and vehicle mods. I wanted to talk through what really drew me into Overlanding and keeps me coming back. 17 Sep 2023 | Overlanding 2.0: How Electric Vehicles Are Changing the Game | 00:13:25
In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm jumping into a somewhat controversial topic, which is EV's and Overlanding. If you've spent any time on Overlanding forums or Facebook groups, you've probably seen all the arguing and hate for and against electrical vehicles in Overlanding. You may have seen the Rivian R1S that completed the Rubicon trail and all of the "Well, did it make it to a charger after the trail?" comments. I personally think that the future of Overlanding is pretty exciting with the addition of these new technologies, but it may not be exactly what you're thinking. So, check out the whole episode (and listen until the end to hear my final thoughts on where I think it's going in the next 10-20 years) and then hop over to the other social channels to drop your thoughts on the episode! 04 Feb 2024 | Beyond the Hype: Has Overlanding Hit Its Peak? | 00:14:23
In this week's episode of the podcast, I saw an article (link: https://www.ordealist.com/overlanding-statistics/) that talks about the Overlanding trend being on the decline. In this episode, I'm going to talk through that, my interpretation of the data, some trends I've seen, and my final thoughts on what I think is happening with Overlanding. Is it becoming less popular or is something else at play in the data?
