06 Jan 2019The Color Gap in the Work Force I Shahzia Noorally on The 2nd Floor01:06:16
Shahzia Noorally
Proud introvert, learning nerd, mildly obsessed with my rescue dog, Ollie

I'm on a personal mission to change the HR industry, challenging the norm around how talent strategies should be executed in organizations and what drives me is the opportunity to explore and implement solutions that put humanity back into the candidate and team member experience.

I literally have the best job in the world leading the "talent system" (including the recruitment function) at ATB Financial in Calgary, Alberta and own the strategy for  talent attraction, assessment, acquisition and internal mobility for ATB.

I'm a proud introvert (love being an example of how we can challenge what's expected of us quiet folk), personal branding nerd and I really believe in the power of social media to elevate both conversations and results for people and businesses. I'm a published writer, speaker, and blogger and hold both a Bachelor of Management degree from the University of Lethbridge as well as a Masters of Education degree from the University of British Columbia.

When I'm not working, you can find me building my side hustle, the Colour Gap (@thecolourgap), a podcast that explores the unique and often uncomfortable truths of being a woman of colour in business, and I'm either exploring dog parks with my dog, Ollie, eating my way through my city or traveling and eating my way through other cities. Disclaimer: this episode in particular is highly advised to only be viewed by 18+ year olds. Sensitive material is discussed.

This episode is not intended to promote the usage of psychedelics. It is simply meant for the purpose of sharing how high your senses can be to no longer ignore what you have been putting under the rug for months, years or even decades for some. Other forms of release are highly recommended before ever considering experimentation of psychedelics - therapy, meditation, yoga and speaking to a loved one about all your thoughts, emotions and feelings without any judgement.

We bring back our most popular guest Anthony Zorzetto - Founder of Anvo Construction.

He shares with us his most powerful personal experience he experienced with himself during the major self isolation period of the corona virus - his psychedelic "mushroom" trip!

We both equally share our personal experience with it and how it changed our entire perspective about ourselves. I love the honesty Zorzetto was willing to give by laying it all out on the table in this one. Especially regarding several demons he felt like he needed to finally face all at once that he never fully gotten over, luring in his sub-conscious mind.

You are certainly in for a ride on this episode. Buckle up survivors, this one is for you!

17 Jul 2023Unlocking Success: Breaking through Levels and Expanding Your Horizons ft. Ankur Jaswal00:25:14

"Unlocking Success: Breaking through Levels and Expanding Your Horizons ft. Ankur Jaswal" is a podcast episode featuring a conversation between the host and Ankur Jaswal. The discussion revolves around the concept of levels in life and the importance of breaking out of one's comfort zone to reach higher levels of success.

The host introduces the idea of levels, comparing life to a game with different levels. They mention how people often get stuck at certain levels, whether mentally or otherwise, and discuss the need to move beyond those levels to progress. Using a financial example, they explain that someone making 200,000 dollars a year might be at the top one percent in their current circle of friends, but by stepping into the next level where people earn 500,000 to a million dollars a year, they become part of the bottom ninety percent. The conversation highlights the tendency to become complacent at a certain level and the importance of expanding one's horizons.

Ankur Jaswal shares his experiences of moving to different countries and emphasizes the need to be intentional about networking and surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals. He talks about strategically choosing the level at which to network and the importance of attending conferences and connecting with people in different fields. He also stresses the significance of hard work, patience, and having a clear vision to move up the levels of success.

The conversation touches upon the role of LinkedIn as a networking platform and explores other ways to network with people, such as attending conferences and seeking out international connections. Ankur Jaswal mentions the enriching experiences he had while living in Dubai, where he learned about different cultures and opportunities. He advises individuals to define their goals, cut out distractions, and align themselves with others who share similar priorities and passions.

The discussion delves into the idea of prioritizing different aspects of life, such as career, family, and fitness. Ankur Jaswal shares his perspective on the importance of making time for new experiences and traveling outside the norm. He reflects on the value of working internationally and gaining exposure to diverse cultures and opportunities.

In conclusion, Ankur Jaswal emphasizes the significance of perseverance and taking the harder path to reach higher levels of success. He compares it to crawling up the stairs when the elevator is not working, highlighting the need for determination and resilience. The episode concludes with a call to action for listeners to connect with Ankur Jaswal through his social media handles and a request for reviews and engagement with the podcast.

Overall, this podcast episode explores the concept of levels in life and provides insights into breaking through limitations, expanding horizons, and striving for greater success.

Introducing Shahzia Noorally

"Proud introvert, learning nerd, mildly obsessed with my rescue dog, Ollie

22 Dec 2020This Warm Up Will Make You Stronger and Pain Free 01:17:45

Introducing two pioneers in the industry of physiotherapists from the east to west: Raj and Kaitlin

We talk about where the future is heading in the landscape of physiotherapy, what an effective warm up should look and feel like based on very recent studies, and how conversation should be led in a consultation from the professional to the potential client, and much more!

Learn more about our guests:

Raj is a physiotherapist and co-owner at Pivotal. He's passionate about rehabilitative medicine, and has been a full-time clinician for over 15 years. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy at the University of Alberta and completed post-graduate training in spinal manipulation, musculo-skeletal acupuncture and Gunn IMS.

"Physiotherapy is an extremely rewarding career for me. I’m really interested in motor vehicle injuries, athletic injuries, post-operative rehabilitation and complex clinical cases. I also have a role with the University of Alberta as a Clinical Instructor and a Curriculum Committee Member. I cherish the chance to help train the next generation of rehabilitation professionals.

I absolutely love the challenge of diagnosing musculoskeletal dysfunction. My treatment style is a combination of hands-on manual therapy, IMS, and condition-specific exercise prescription. My work is an opportunity to become engaged in people’s lives and work with them not only to ensure optimal rehabilitation, but also to get them back to the things that are important to them."

Kaitlin graduated from Cumberland University near Nashville, Tennessee in 2015 with a degree in Exercise Science while playing varsity soccer. She went on to complete her Master of Physical Therapy degree at Western University in London, ON.

"I decided to pursue this career path due to the abundance of injuries I witnessed and experienced throughout my years of playing competitive soccer for several clubs in Edmonton and then throughout my varsity career in Tennessee. Experiencing and seeing these injuries first hand showed me the importance of both rehabilitation and prevention of future injuries. I have been practicing as a physiotherapist for over 3 years now in Toronto, working with a wide range of patients - from elite athletes to general population.

I love working with all ages and seeing a multitude of different injuries. I have a particular interest in sport medicine and athletic performance/return to sport. My treatment style is tailored specifically to each individual and will typically consist of a combination of manual therapy and/or IMS, as well as exercise prescription and movement optimization."

12 May 2021Starting a Business is NOT a Steep Climb Upward 01:31:39

Leading up to covid Bryan was getting prepped for his first men's physique competition down in Halifax Canada. He had spent the last year building a stage wining physique with his coach Ryan Gray. Due to the unfortunate occurrence of Covid, the entire country had shut down two weeks leading to the show. Absolutely crushed, Bryan’s perspective of the lockdowns was to get bigger and bring an even better physique the next time around. Being a welder by trade, he was fortunate enough that his uncle had a little shop outside the city on his farm where he made his own rack and bench, purchased a barbell and some plates, and was able to continue training at home. An idea had sparked in Bryan’s mind… Everyone was charging a crazy amount for gym equipment, used and new. He posted his rack on Facebook marketplace to see if anyone else needed a rack and bench with the main idea of just wanting to help people get affordable, locally made equipment. Within two weeks he had up to 15 paid deposits! Off and running he went. He spent all summer hand-making everything from full cages, half racks, benches, independent stands, and almost every accessory you could think of! Fast forward to today he has now moved into his own shop, invested everything he has into his tools and business, and now has his vision set on creating the most badass commercial line of equipment to come out of Canada. Not to mention the opening of the Bryks Fit Compound later next year to not only showcase all his equipment but have it as a fully functioning gym with an environment like no other! Stay tuned Bryks Fit is only beginning!

07 Dec 2020A High Level of Commitment Leads To Extreme Ownership 02:14:04
Introducing National Champion Bodybuilder and corporate executive Pradeep Bala:

"I've been fortunate to grow up across the world. From India, to Kuwait, from Houston TX to Halifax NS, from Montreal to London UK, and now to Edmonton, life has been a rollercoaster. I've been able to develop more empathy and find different perspectives by experiencing different cultures and meeting individuals from all walks of life. Growing up, I was involved in organised sports like football (soccer) and basketball. I didn't play competitive organized sports while studying and working in London England. Does touch American football while hungover count while in university?!

I've been recreationally weight lifting since I was 16. I began to lift with the intention to compete as a drug free bodybuilder since I was 22. I competed in my first show in London while studying for my Masters degree at 23. Till today, I've competed in 8 different drug tested shows, 3 of which have been national level competitions. At 2 national level competitions in England, I've placed 4th twice as a middleweight. In 2019, I placed 2nd in Canada as a welterweight.

I'm 31 and a corporate professional who has very high standards and expectations for work output and performance. I enjoy understanding how to reverse engineering marketing and business objectives with the team to then deliver and find technical creative advertising solutions. From working at Harrods in London England to ATB Financial in Edmonton Alberta, I've always kept up with my bodybuilding aspirations outside of my career. It's been a balancing act.

At this point, I feel the need to give back more - A LOT MORE. I feel it's important for me to  show and help ambitious corporate professionals build a physique that can be on any fitness magazine while they also run a fortune 500 company. Social media glamorizes the end result. I want to showcase the process required with zero BS by being authentic and genuine."

23 Mar 2020A Mental Health Story I Kaylor Betts00:55:05

" My name is Kaylor Betts.. and I am the founder of The Mental Wealth Project.    From as far back as I can remember, I have been challenged by my Mental Health. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, A.D.H.D, and addictions, these were a big part of my life for many years. These challenges I’ve faced, have sparked an obsessive journey in my life, to not only be able to deal with these challenges, but overcome them, and become the most extraordinary version of myself. A mission to become unstoppable.

I have been an entrepreneur and coach for 12 years, where I started in the fitness industry, eventually building and running a private gym for 5 years. I’ve helped hundreds of clients with their physical and mental health. More recently, in the last 3 years, I have focused on helping people achieve “Mental Wealth”, which means essentially, achieving their highest potential. Almost a year ago, I was sitting on my couch, and had an “aha moment”.

After transitioning out of the fitness industry, I had been lacking a sense of meaning and purpose in my life. I had continued to help people build their mental and physical health after the fitness industry, but all of a sudden it hit me. I realized that I needed to turn what I always thought was my biggest pain, weakness, and something I honestly felt quite ashamed about, into my biggest gift. Becoming open about the fact that I have struggled with my mental health too.

I was awakened to the fact that my calling in this world, was to become an advocate, share my story, bring people together who need to improve their mental health. It was only days after this incredibly special moment in my life, that I came up with the concept of The Mental Wealth Project. The building of this project has been accompanied by an amazing team of people who also are incredibly passionate about creating mental wealth in this world, and I could not be more grateful for these special people.

My soul is lit on fire as I am building this community, raising awareness and normalizing the conversation of mental health, while continuing to work as a Mental Wealth Coach.   Along with building The Mental Wealth Project to its highest potential, I want to show people how I went from barely being able to cope with the intensities of life, to living with the life I have always dreamed of living. To enter into the mental health space and work towards impacting millions of people, from all around the world. "

14 Jun 2024Be Brave Series #3 – When You Know Thyself You Know What Truly Matters00:57:41

We brought on EJ Parris – formally known as Emanuel Pow Parris Elite Fitness Coach. He is an old friend of mine and a former track and field Olympian/bodybuilder.

EJ and I share the mutual love and respect for fitness.

We delved into the profound importance of the ancient adage "know thyself." This principle, rooted in self-awareness, serves as the foundation for personal and professional empowerment, particularly for coaches and individuals striving to maximize their potential.

The coach emphasized that understanding one's own strengths, weaknesses, values, and motivations is crucial. By truly knowing themselves, coaches can better align their actions and decisions with their authentic selves. This alignment not only enhances personal satisfaction but also boosts effectiveness in their professional roles.

For fitness coaches, in particular, self-awareness translates into a clearer understanding of what they offer to clients. It helps in defining their unique value proposition and establishing their worth in a competitive market. When coaches know their strengths and areas for improvement, they can more confidently communicate their skills and services, leading to better client relationships and career growth.

The podcast highlighted that self-knowledge isn't just about introspection but also about continuous learning and adaptation. The coach encouraged listeners to regularly reflect on their experiences, seek feedback, and remain open to change. This dynamic process of self-discovery enables individuals to stay relevant and resilient in their fields.

In conclusion, the episode underscored that "know thyself" is not merely an ancient maxim but a vital, ongoing practice. For fitness coaches and others, embracing this principle fosters empowerment, clarity, and a deeper connection to one's professional and personal life.

Outside of the court, Khurram is a creative visionary who is not afraid of turning ideas into a reality. He started crafting skills in content creation on social media through high resolution videos and photography. A true artist of his own craft.

Khurram's love for ball and community building has led him to creating “In The Dark Athletics” - Train In the Dark, Shine in the Light. This in his own words is "for all the people who have the blind faith that the hard work they put in the dark will pay off when the opportunity is given to shine in the light and be in the spotlight!"

16 Mar 2022From India to Canada - Family is the Motivation00:13:41

My cousin Sikander Rana Dhillon moved away from home - Amritsar, Punjab, India - in 2014 to fulfill his desire to study business here and gain “real-world experience.” Along the way he’s had family top of mind every step of the way and he plans to head back to India after not being home for years. I wanted to bring him on for a quick chat to talk about the importance of family when it comes to surviving and thriving in all aspects of life. He gave a really beautiful reference related to fighting and ended it off with a beautiful singing bar. Stay tuned for the full episode before he leaves back home.

13 Dec 2021Analyze The Risk Then Proceed Forward01:52:34

This week on the 2nd Floor, we have the pleasure of sitting down with Jon Cheung, Founder and CEO of Evolve Strength, a fast-growing chain of gyms based in Edmonton, Alberta. Jon first opened Evolve in 2015, after completing his career as a strength and conditioning coach where he spent some time with both the Edmonton Eskimos and the Edmonton Police Service Recruits.

In this episode, we discuss many topics, but the one that stands is the risk he undertook to open his first gym. Without that decision, Evolve probably doesn't exist today. Tune in to this week's episode to learn about Jon and his story.

27 Nov 2023Different Ways of Giving Back, Challenges of Parenthood with Sonny Sekhon01:35:42

We bring on Top 40 Under 40 CRO of Free Play for Kids Sonny Sekhon on the podcast to discuss different ways of giving back, challenges of parenthood and much more.

Sonny Sekhon had what he thought was the perfect job. For over a decade, he was the general manager of Edmonton’s flagship Henry Singer store, helping to clothe what he calls some of the “superstars” of Edmonton. But, when his son, Banner, was born, he thought about what the job meant to him. And it led to what he calls one of the hardest conversations he’s ever had, with Fred and Jordan Singer. He decided to leave his post.

“I’ve had the benefit of helping superstar people,” says Sekhon. “And one thing they would always say is that they wished they had spent more time, in the early days, with their little ones. You make an extra deal, you make five extra grand, 20 years later, what’s that really worth when your kids are grown?”

Sekhon has been a long-time volunteer, and now board member, with the famous Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament, held annually at West Edmonton Mall. With an extensive file of contacts from his time as a clothier, he moved into a revenue-generating role with Free Play for Kids, a program that offers after-school childcare through free sports programming to families in need.

During the school year, coaches and mentors travel to 24 different schools to introduce kids to a variety of sports. After a major shortfall last December cut Free Play for Kids’ budget in half, he was able to raise $100,000 in new funds, mainly from auto dealers.

He’s helped bring in $600,000 in annual funding from the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, and deepened the organization’s relationship with the Oilers, most notably with Free Play Ambassador Darnell Nurse.

“In some cases, families have left war-torn Syria or Afghanistan with nothing. We see the emotion and the joy with the parents, because their kids are safely able to kick a ball around. I don’t know if I’d ever be in a position to financially write a cheque to make a difference. For me, putting my sweat equity into it and making partnerships that continue to grow, to give those opportunities to kids, to change sport, it’s awesome.”

24 May 2021Srvent talks Rap Culture, Creativity, Standing out as an Artist in 2021, Juggling Multiple Passions and Making Money from them01:00:33

Srvent is a rapper, producer, filmmaker, and author from Edison, Alberta

Before all the projects, performances, publications, and productions ever came to be, Srvent started his journey in his parents basement. He was a toddler hellbent on slapping the piano keys, trying to stretch his arms as far apart as they could. Back then he was only little Spencer Richard.

A typical middle child (three brothers), Spencer found ways over the years to seek attention. He sang and made dance routines in the living-room for company, he composed wordless pieces for the piano, signed up for Air-Band competitions in his school, made LEGO creations for days, and wrote stories on a blue screen on what would be now considered an ancient device. But what might have started as attention-seeking led to the fortunate discovery of his need to create.

The piano was his first instrument to process emotions, and eventually around the age of 10 he was enrolled in piano lessons. When he rebelled against learning how to read music, his parents and piano teacher conspired to help him develop his natural ear and composition abilities instead. This became the foundation for much of his musical growth… Even though he still can’t read music, it turns out that he never needed to. He performed and won talent shows with his original compositions, ultimately performing to an audience of over 8 thousand people for the Alberta Winter Games in 2006.

03 Feb 2021Ex-LA Gang Member Shares How Forgiveness Will Save Your Life01:55:21
Jose Lugo is a formerly convicted felon, ex-LA gang member who travels the U.S. and listens to people's stories.

Jose Lugo is thirty-three years old. He would join a L.A. street gang when he was sixteen and would be convicted and sentenced to five years in prison at the age of eighteen. When he paroled from prison, he vowed to himself that he would never go back and dreamed of one day telling the stories of his peers.

Jose would go through life never fully understanding the value in his own story. At the age of thirty-one he would return to jail for a D.U.I. After his three day incarceration, he had lost all hope.

He took inventory of his life and saw himself only as a criminal with no value. On the brink of taking his own life, he was able to remember a simple truth that he had believed as a child - that he as a person had inherent value, therefore his story had value. It was in that moment that he was able to find the value in his story once again.

Jose is the founder of We Are All One Story. He currently travels the country listening to and sharing peoples stories. He is also finishing his memoir, Love, Faith and Violence: A True Song and Story
