06 Jan 2021 | From the Vault: Passenger | 00:38:51
We are taking a little break over at Texx Talks and prepping for our next season, in the interim, we have our Passenger episode "from the vault" in celebration of his brand spanking new album Songs for the Drunk and Lonely Hearted Setting Suns Michael David Rosenberg – better known to all of us as Passenger - is an award-winning, chart topping singer-songwriter who commands the stage and your attention, like few solo acts can and do. This Brighton-born musician is a master storyteller, seeking out the charming in the seemingly mundane, and spinning songs that remind us of the importance of human interaction in an all too out-of-touch technological world. With his intimate, folk-inflected sound, this one-man band has built a loyal following, and he chats to us about a recent foul purchase, chasing an endless summer and how commanding a street corner ultimately prepares you to face 65 000 fans. Outro Song: “Sword From the Stone” off the new album “Patchwork”

Let Her Go - Apple Music Spotify Hearts on Fire featuring Ed Sheeran - Apple Music Spotify

09 Jun 2021 | Jacques Moolman | 00:55:51
Jacques Moolman is arguably South Africa’s best rock vocalist, high praise - maybe - but once you’ve heard this man’s unmistakable voice, it’s rather difficult to forget it. Recently embarking on a solo career and releasing his debut album The Great Valley Redemption that’s a blend of old school blues rock and, we would be very surprised if he doesn’t walk away with a SAMA for Best Rock Album in 2022. From his growing up between South Africa and The Ilse of Wight, to his formative musical years as the lead singer of Shadowclub, Jacques has always sought to find the extraordinary in the mundane, while, like any creative genius, ensures that he makes sure even the most beautiful output is fraught with self sabotage. Portugal. The Man is a Grammy-winning band that fuses elements of psychedelia and classic rock, with a dash of modern pop and a willingness to experiment, and founding member and bassist, Zachary Carothers, isn’t shy to admit it was all a bit of a fluke at first. Today has been a momentous one for us because we are currently recording our first live show in front of an audience, something we would have never thought possible without the support of our firm friends, Ray-Ban. So while we get all of that in order, we are bringing you an episode from our vault featuring Portugal the Man, hoping that you will “Feel It Still”.
Portugal, the Man is a Grammy-winning band that fuses elements of psychedelia and classic rock, with a dash of modern pop and a willingness to experiment, and founding member and bassist, Zachary Carothers, isn’t shy to admit it was all a bit of a fluke at first.
Not ones to shy away from speaking their mind, both on and off their records, their last album was responsible for a song that became omnipresent the world over (“Feel It Still”) and became such an earworm, you never got tired of hearing it.
From growing up in Alaska, to the effect of moving to Portland on the band’s trajectory, to falling in love with South Africa after their 2015 tour opened their eyes to the beauty of the country, Zach speaks candidly about all the places he’s been and the places he’s planning on going as he’s getting older.

22 Apr 2020 | BCUC | 01:00:34
The music of BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) resonates strongly with a sense of spirituality and deals with the past, the present and the future of the people of South Africa.
Striving to rectify western assumptions and shine a light on post-apartheid South Africa from a contemporary perspective, there are few SA bands like BCUC, who draw deep inspiration from indigenous music, infusing them with raps and a very raw rock ‘n’ roll attitude.
And there are even fewer who can claim to have played Glastonbury, Roskilde and Afropunk and recorded with living legends Saul Williams and Femi Kuti.

20 May 2020 | The Look Back | 00:25:31
For this episode we will be looking back at some of our favourite moments from Season 1, reveal what went into the recording of each episode, and hit you with some exciting announcements in anticipation of Season 2.
But first, we think it’s high time we properly introduce ourselves.
While almost everyone who knows our host calls her Texx, her real name is Tecla Ciolfi and she’s been a part of the South African music industry for the last 10 years - namely as the founder of Texx and the City, a music website that spotlights the best underground & unsigned musicians in South Africa across multiple genres.
Texx Talks was born when Texx and producer, Jonathan Inggs, got together at Van Hunks in Cape Town for a day drinking session. Cut to another day drinking session a few months later at The Royale in Joburg, and Texx Talks was born.
Just like Texx and The City, the aim behind this podcast is to spotlight the multiple genres that make South Africa, and to a larger extent, Africa, such a rich musical melting pot.
Together with our second producer Matthew Loots, who edits Texx Talks to perfection, and Al Clapper who assists in doing research on each interview subject, we really could not have asked for a better team.
So now let's LOOK BACK.

22 Sep 2021 | From the Vault - Muzi | 00:59:04
While Season 6 has come to a close, we are still hard at work in the background, getting ready for the launch of Season 7 on the 28th of September with a lovely teaser trailer to get you all excited. In the meantime, we thought we would bring back this episode we did with The Zulu Skywalker, aka, Muzi.
A lot has happened since we first released this episode and while at the time we caught at the start of the release buildup for his new album “Interblaktic”, this Zulu Jedi has gone on to drop singles featuring the likes of Sho Madjozi and Kaytranada, and has firmly entrenched this cultural polymath as one of South Africa’s freshest exports.
So sit back, get yourself a beverage and get deep inside the mind of Muzi to prepare yourself for the drop of his new album on the 1st of October.
With his heritage and family at the root of every creative move that he makes, he expertly blends together cutting edge urban and electronic music with local genres like Maskandi, Kwaito, and Bubblegum Pop of the 80s and 90s, to craft a sound that is entirely his own.
Through embracing his early “weirdness” and turning it into an asset, despite common perceptions in rural Empangeni, Muzi is a philosophical shaman that draws inspiration from the past to cultivate an African-charged, sonic future.

Pulling focus on the unity of women, LGBTQ+ and GNC individuals within the music, art, design and creative industries, the necessity of this network has been highlighted not only to empower members, but to impart much-needed knowledge and experience on a new generations of artists, managers and agents who may not have access to all the resources they need.
They join Texx for a frank discussion about nostalgia, making noise and never being part of the scenery.

27 Apr 2022 | Fuzigish | 00:48:48
As the frontman of FUZIGISH, one of the best ska punk bands South Africa has ever seen, Jay Bones captained a chaotic ship that tore towns and stages apart wherever they toured and performed.
Known for their epic, energetic live shows where anything goes, their drunken, middle fingers anthems like “Secret Police”, “Little Bird”, “Crazy Friends” and countless others are still sung by loyal skankers all these years later.
Here he talks to Texx about their origins, the friends, the fights and the tours that served as a backdrop for Fuzigish’s epic story ahead of their new album drop. 08 Dec 2021 | From the Vault - James Blake | 00:49:28
Our Season has come to an end and while the team is taking a well-earned break, I want to highlight just one more episode that I can’t get enough of. My interview with James Blake was sort of a bucket list one for me and he also exemplifies what it means to be one’s truest self and live life unapologetically saying: YouAreOn
Ray-Ban is your reflection in the mirror of your truest self, it is the shade on a hot summer’s day, it is your own focus through any spotlight that may be on you. Together, Texx Talks and Ray-Ban are saying: you got a challenge for us? YouAreOn
You can’t predict the light. But with Texx Talks and Ray-Ban you are always ready to capture it by living each day in the moment. YouAreOn.
Define your style at superbalist.com
James Blake is a man who has gripped an entire generation with his melodic prowess and lyrical aptitude, making music that is steeped in an EQ that few of his contemporaries can match.
We love him here in South Africa and every time he goes live on Instagram we make up 90% of his audience and drop highly inappropriate, but always hilarious comments to show him just how much we love his singularly unique sound.
Tecla chats to James Blake ahead of our four year wait for his new album, Friends That Break Your Heart, about dog training, how to get by in a lockdown, and why going blonde isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and much more!

02 Mar 2022 | Bylwansta | 01:05:26
ByLwansta was first featured on Texx and the City back in 2016 with his debut EP “Your Absolutely Right”. Over the course of the last 6 years he’s become known for his biting lyricism and his charismatic flow and his attention to every single detail of the roll out of his last few releases is on a whole other level, worthy of massive praise.
Relating to creative output primarily through colour palates and inanimate objects, they serve to set the scene for a meticulous voyage of self discovery that has culminated in SPIGØNGET (Chapter 3), a study in the seemingly mundane, brought forward in a rich audio joint. t
