08 Aug 2021Womxn's Month00:29:41

Here at a Texx Talks we have the unique privilege to be able to showcase some of the best talent that Africa, and the world has to offer. It is even more of a privilege to be able to highlight some of the incredible talent that just happens to have different chromosomes.

For a podcast hosted by a lady, coming from a country where womxn are under siege, we thought we would share just a tiny part of the journey that female creatives have to embark on, every day. After all, we don’t need just a month to celebrate female talent, it should be every day.

So without further ado: Texx selects some of her favourite Texx Talks interviews featuring some of the finest Africa has to offer.

06 Jan 2021From the Vault: Passenger00:38:51

We are taking a little break over at Texx Talks and prepping for our next season, in the interim, we have our Passenger episode "from the vault" in celebration of his brand spanking new album Songs for the Drunk and Lonely Hearted

Setting Suns

Michael David Rosenberg – better known to all of us as Passenger - is an award-winning, chart topping singer-songwriter who commands the stage and your attention, like few solo acts can and do.

This Brighton-born musician is a master storyteller, seeking out the charming in the seemingly mundane, and spinning songs that remind us of the importance of human interaction in an all too out-of-touch technological world.

With his intimate, folk-inflected sound, this one-man band has built a loyal following, and he chats to us about a recent foul purchase, chasing an endless summer and how commanding a street corner ultimately prepares you to face 65 000 fans.

Outro Song: “Sword From the Stone”  off the new album “Patchwork”

Featured tracks:

Let Her Go - Apple Music Spotify

Hearts on Fire featuring Ed Sheeran - Apple Music Spotify

09 Jun 2021Jacques Moolman00:55:51

Jacques Moolman is arguably South Africa’s best rock vocalist, high praise - maybe - but once you’ve heard this man’s unmistakable voice, it’s rather difficult to forget it.

Recently embarking on a solo career and releasing his debut album The Great Valley Redemption that’s a blend of old school blues rock and, we would be very surprised if he doesn’t walk away with a SAMA for Best Rock Album in 2022.

From his growing up between South Africa and The Ilse of Wight, to his formative musical years as the lead singer of Shadowclub, Jacques has always sought to find the extraordinary in the mundane, while, like any creative genius, ensures that he makes sure even the most beautiful output is fraught with self sabotage.

You Do It alone - Apple Music Spotify

Cabin in the Woods - Apple Music Spotify

Nasty C is a multi award-winning rapper who, despite growing up in Durban, the home of kwaito, house and gqom, carved a different path for himself in hip hop.

Having toured 32 new markets last year alone, this trailblazer has a knack for filling up arenas and dominating the stage, and at only 23-year-old he is undisputedly the voice of a new generation with a third hit album (A Zulu Man With Some Power), mini-documentary (Origins) and a Netflix special (Zulu Man in Japan) under his belt in 2020 so far.

We honestly can’t believe that so much has happened over the last two months of Texx Talks Season 2.

We just need to get real for a second - the process of recording Season 2 in lockdown has not been without its ups and downs.

And if it wasn’t for the whole team, scattered around South Africa, keeping each other sane, we all would have lost our collective minds.

But between the support of you, the listener, and TOMS - we managed to raise the bar and smash all of our expectations.

So now let's LOOK BACK.

24 Feb 2021Portugal. The Man00:54:56

Portugal. The Man is a Grammy-winning band that fuses elements of psychedelia and classic rock, with a dash of modern pop and a willingness to experiment, and founding member and bassist, Zachary Carothers, isn’t shy to admit it was all a bit of a fluke at first.

Not ones to shy away from speaking their mind, both on and off their records, their last album was responsible for a song that became omnipresent the world over (“Feel It Still”) and became such an earworm, you never got tired of hearing it.

From growing up in Alaska, to the effect of moving to Portland on the band’s trajectory, to falling in love with South Africa after their 2015 tour opened their eyes to the beauty of the country, Zach speaks candidly about all the places he’s been and the places he’s planning on going as he’s getting older.

The music of BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) resonates strongly with a sense of spirituality and deals with the past, the present and the future of the people of South Africa.

Striving to rectify western assumptions and shine a light on post-apartheid South Africa from a contemporary perspective, there are few SA bands like BCUC, who draw deep inspiration from indigenous music, infusing them with raps and a very raw rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

And there are even fewer who can claim to have played Glastonbury, Roskilde and Afropunk and recorded with living legends Saul Williams and Femi Kuti.

02 Aug 2021The Red Editions featuring Usha Seejarim00:30:44

To celebrate the launch of Radisson Red Rosebank, Texx Talks has teamed up with the Radisson Group to spotlight four individuals that represent their four pillars of art, music, design and fashion.

First up is Usha Seejarim, who designed the giant pair of red angel wings that sit at the entrance of the Radisson Red Rosebank. She is best known for her reinterpretation of ordinary and domestic objects, making use of everyday items like safety pins, wooden pegs, irons and brooms, giving her work a distinctly Dadaist influence.

Radisson Red presents a playful twist on the conventional, and the latest edition to their family is Radisson Red Rosebank in Johannesburg, a super slick hotel in the beating heart of Johannesburg’s “Art Mile”

Radisson Red gives you the chance to tune in and out, switching effortlessly between business and pleasure, and in this special four-part series, I’ll be highlighting 4 individuals that represent Radisson Red’s 4 pillars, through art, music, design and fashion.

Be sure to check out Radisson RED Rosebank, Johannesburg at radissonhotels.com and across all social platforms @radissonredrosebank

Or if you’re in the Rosebank area, why not take a stroll past Radisson RED and snap your own selfie in front of their statement red angel wings - everyone’s welcome!

20 May 2020The Look Back00:25:31

For this episode we will be looking back at some of our favourite moments from Season 1, reveal what went into the recording of each episode, and hit you with some exciting announcements in anticipation of Season 2.

But first, we think it’s high time we properly introduce ourselves.

While almost everyone who knows our host calls her Texx, her real name is Tecla Ciolfi and she’s been a part of the South African music industry for the last 10 years - namely as the founder of Texx and the City, a music website that spotlights the best underground & unsigned musicians in South Africa across multiple genres.

Texx Talks was born when Texx and producer, Jonathan Inggs, got together at Van Hunks in Cape Town for a day drinking session. Cut to another day drinking session a few months later at The Royale in Joburg, and Texx Talks was born.

Just like Texx and The City, the aim behind this podcast is to spotlight the multiple genres that make South Africa, and to a larger extent, Africa, such a rich musical melting pot.

Together with our second producer Matthew Loots, who edits Texx Talks to perfection, and Al Clapper who assists in doing research on each interview subject, we really could not have asked for a better team.

So now let's LOOK BACK.

21 Oct 2020Cassper Nyovest00:57:29

Cassper Nyovest is arguably one of the biggest and most successful musicians on our music scene, today.

With four of his previous albums being certified platinum a few times over, and a fifth one almost certainly on the way, this rapper, songwriter, entrepreneur and record producer has set and broken records all over the place, and his infinitive drive and enviable work ethic, place him at the very top of his game.

Born and raised in Mafikeng in the North West, with a strong sense of family and heritage in every aspect of the music that he makes, his humble approach to life, and his desire to pass on his father’s teachings to his own family, paint him as a picture of humility in a crazy social media-driven world that’s rife with haters.

15 Apr 2020The Kiffness00:50:08

Dave Scott, aka The Kiffness, can be best described as a South African meme and music culture tastemaker. From his roots remixing his school song, to taking on the SABC with his #NoPayNoPlay campaign, to creating a mashup that was incorporated into Fatboy Slim’s set - Dave has never shied away from being quirky or controversial.

His development as an artist can only be described as DIY, having essentially turned his band into a brand, while always being fully open to sharing his hard-earned industry insights with the music community at large.

22 Sep 2021From the Vault - Muzi00:59:04

While Season 6 has come to a close, we are still hard at work in the background, getting ready for the launch of Season 7 on the 28th of September with a lovely teaser trailer to get you all excited. In the meantime, we thought we would bring back this episode we did with The Zulu Skywalker, aka, Muzi.

A lot has happened since we first released this episode and while at the time we caught at the start of the release buildup for his new album “Interblaktic”, this Zulu Jedi has gone on to drop singles featuring the likes of Sho Madjozi and Kaytranada, and has firmly entrenched this cultural polymath as one of South Africa’s freshest exports.

So sit back, get yourself a beverage and get deep inside the mind of Muzi to prepare yourself for the drop of his new album on the 1st of October.

With his heritage and family at the root of every creative move that he makes, he expertly blends together cutting edge urban and electronic music with local genres like Maskandi, Kwaito, and Bubblegum Pop of the 80s and 90s, to craft a sound that is entirely his own.

Through embracing his early “weirdness” and turning it into an asset, despite common perceptions in rural Empangeni, Muzi is a philosophical shaman that draws inspiration from the past to cultivate an African-charged, sonic future.

18 May 2022DJ LAG00:36:36
DJ Lag is frequently described as a gqom pioneer – helping shape and usher the drum-heavy sound to the forefront of South Africa's dance music scene.

Always looking to break new ground, his latest album employs a broader palette fusing amapiano, Afro-house, and Afro-tech – and slowing down a few tracks that he’s seeing as a bit of shift in the genre, calling it gqom 2.0.

From hearing his music in a taxi for the first time, to that first trip up to Johannesburg, to touring the world, DJ Lag seems to have taken it all in his stride, one giant leap at a time.

Yukimi Nagano is the lead singer of pioneering Swedish quartet, Little Dragon, who combine synth-pop, down-tempo electronic music, hip-hop, and more to create a colourful sound that’s earned them a global audience.

This band flourish best in smoky, soulful environments and their electronic works are light and lithe, with a real richness inherent in the minimalism of their work.

Over two decades, Yukimi and the band have toured the world, but it’s South Africa that they still hold a strong affection and affinity for which Yukimi unpacks in this interview.

17 Nov 2021Das Kapital01:09:03

Das Kapital is a Cape Town-born artist, producer and remixer who has made a name for himself with his bold DJ sets that stay with you long after the “jol” is over.

As a champion of South African dance and electronic music, he introduces us to a new generation of artists and genres every week on his radio show and his dedication to the uplifting of our scene is palpable, and who knows what the hell what we’d do without him.

The self proclaimed “hydra of hustle” reflects on a decade in the top flight and what it means to build a culture in an increasingly formulaic world, whilst enabling the next generation of talent, if it has to be at a vaccine site or at a festival.

08 Dec 2021From the Vault - James Blake00:49:28

Our Season has come to an end and while the team is taking a well-earned break, I want to highlight just one more episode that I can’t get enough of. My interview with James Blake was sort of a bucket list one for me and he also exemplifies what it means to be one’s truest self and live life unapologetically saying: YouAreOn

Ray-Ban is your reflection in the mirror of your truest self, it is the shade on a hot summer’s day, it is your own focus through any spotlight that may be on you. Together, Texx Talks and Ray-Ban are saying: you got a challenge for us? YouAreOn

You can’t predict the light. But with Texx Talks and Ray-Ban you are always ready to capture it by living each day in the moment. YouAreOn.

Define your style at superbalist.com

James Blake is a man who has gripped an entire generation with his melodic prowess and lyrical aptitude, making music that is steeped in an EQ that few of his contemporaries can match.

We love him here in South Africa and every time he goes live on Instagram we make up 90% of his audience and drop highly inappropriate, but always hilarious comments to show him just how much we love his singularly unique sound.

Tecla chats to James Blake ahead of our four year wait for his new album, Friends That Break Your Heart, about dog training, how to get by in a lockdown, and why going blonde isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and much more!

02 Mar 2022Bylwansta01:05:26
ByLwansta was first featured on Texx and the City back in 2016 with his debut EP “Your Absolutely Right”. Over the course of the last 6 years he’s become known for his biting lyricism and his charismatic flow and his attention to every single detail of the roll out of his last few releases is on a whole other level, worthy of massive praise.

Relating to creative output primarily through colour palates and inanimate objects, they serve to set the scene for a meticulous voyage of self discovery that has culminated in SPIGØNGET (Chapter 3), a study in the seemingly mundane, brought forward in a rich audio joint. t
