17 Sep 2020 | Ep 35 Part 1 - US Open Women's Semifinals and Final Recap feat. Mert Ertunga (Tennis With An Accent) | 00:39:06
In the part one of the US Open recap, Vansh and I are joined by Mert Ertunga, former tennis player, coach, and now writing for Tennis with an Accent (a lovely accent, by the way.) We talk about the extremely high quality semifinals between Naomi Osaka and Jennifer Brady, and how they are such solid players who delivered what was possibly the best match of the tournament. Then we move to the thrilling Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams match, an old rivalry revived with all the high emotions and physical aspect that only those two can bring. In the final, we discuss about Naomi Osaka's game, and how it is a step above everyone else's, but also how Vika managed to almost make a dream 3 week span with a Cincinnati and US OpenDouble. But Osaka's convictions and game were too strong tbis time. They dive into his matches from R4 onwards where he came back from two sets down TWICE and accomplished the most difficult task in tennis by defeating the king of clay, Rafael Nadal, on court Phillipe-Chatrier. They discuss Stefanos Tsitsipas, his RG result, and his tremendous season so far, along with assessing the rest of the Next Gen. 03 Sep 2020 | Ep 32 - Why Are ATP Masters 1000 Perceived As Having So Much Less Value Than They Actually Have? | 00:56:32
In men's tennis, an ATP Masters 1000 is worth 1000 points in rankings. There are 9 of those as opposed to 4 Grand Slams. By all means, they have overall half the value of Grand Slams, at least. Considering they account for a total of 9000 points, whereas the Slams are at 8000, these tournaments hold a very important place in the calendar, as they can define who becomes number 1 at the end of the season. And our Big 4 cares about them: only 43 titles went to non Big 4 players since 2003. And Djokovic just tied Nadal's record of 35 total, and broke his own by completing the Double Career Golden Masters, a truly novel and unique feat that is unlikely to be reproduced in many years. Why then, so many disregard this category in relation to the Grand Slams? Why do we place so much more importance to the majors while almost not caring about any other thing when comparing records? Why do so few people outside the tennis fan base recognize those tournaments, but most likely know about Wimbledon or the US Open? Vansh and I are not exactly looking for an answer, but we try and discuss some of the reasons as to why the Masters 1000 category has not been able so far to live up to the 2nd most important in the tennis world. 13 May 2021 | Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal Rome Final 2006 - Like You've Never Heard Before. | 00:57:03
Now you can find our podcast on the TNNS app, our favourite tennis scores app to follow all tours, including Challengers and ITF Futures! Download it here: https://www.downloadtennis.com/ With some spare time between the Madrid and Rome wrap-up podcasts, Andre and Owen look back at one of the best ever Rome finals: Federer vs. Nadal in 2006. The rivalry was bubbling excitedly in 2005 and the start of 2006, and boiled over with this classic five-set, five-plus-hour final. How did Nadal and Federer play differently all those years ago? How did the match unfold? What mistakes did Federer make on his two match points, and in the fifth set tiebreak? What was playing Nadal on clay like *before* the Spaniard became the King of Clay? And what would (or would not) have changed if Federer had won this match? All this and more on the latest episode of Tennis & Bagels, and be ready for our next look into the past: an upcoming episode on Federer’s run to the 2009 Roland-Garros title, which will hopefully involve all three hosts! We’re at the halfway point of Roland-Garros, so Andre and Owen review some of the players who have emerged into the second week! Świątek has been really dominant in Paris since the start of the 2020 tournament, but she’s shown she can fight as well. Is she now the solid favorite to win the tournament? Next, we discuss the Big Three — their efficiency in the early rounds, their chances to go further, and more! We wrap up by talking about Serena Williams. Many have counted her out of this tournament, but she’s displayed great form so far, and her section of the draw has opened up. Is this the chance to get #24, and if not now, when is the best chance? 09 Jul 2020 | Ep 23 - My Crazy Wimbledon Predictions... For 2021! | 00:34:16
2020 has not been the greatest for tennis. Lots of drama, lots of controversies, not a lot of tennis. We, as fans, do enjoy some of that off-court action and want to know what's up with the stars. But 90% of the time, we actually want to watch tennis being played. Unbelievable shots, rallies, sets, matches tournaments, that's what we live for! So, thanks, Wimbledon, for putting up the classics for us. But, in the spirit that tennis will resume normally in 2021, I want to start thinking about the craziest predictions for the tournament at SW19 where most call the Temple of Tennis. Federer winning his 21st grand slam? Serena Williams tying Margaret Court's record of 24? Tsitsipas beating Djokovic in the semis? How about Coco Gauff making the final? It's so far away, I just couldn't help but go nuts with predictions. And I will make sure I'll remember them next year (when I will be right.) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/messageSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels. 18 Jun 2020 | Ep 20 - Crazy Exhibitions And Will Tennis Really Be Back? | 00:49:25
These times are just nuts. No one knows what's the next day going to look like, what kind of crazy information we will receive, and what are the next problems we will face. After so many weird exhibitions full of controversies for all imaginable reasons, now we see a light at the end of the tunnel... or do we? With the completely crazy calendar the ATP just put out and the divisive US Open Tennis 2020, not to mention the Roland Garros saga, it honestly feels like things are going to happen only when they happen. Nothing is certain, and we need to see to believe. Steve put a lot of work and a lot of heart in completing a comprehensive account of Pete Sampras's tennis career, from his junior years to hypothetical encounters with the heroes of our generation, namely Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. This book was a joy to read, and with interviews with the greatest names in tennis history such as Jim Courier, Michael Chang, and foreword by Chris Evert, this book will sure capture your full attention from cover to cover. I couldn't put it down. This part covers the beginning of Sampras's journey in tennis until his 1995 season. 01 Apr 2020 | Ep 9 - Top 5 Favourite Active WTA Players: Great New Gen | 00:42:48
In this episode, I talk about and rank my top 5 WTA players who are active still. There is still so much more about them, it was already difficult to keep this episode under an hour! Throughout, I also make comments on a few differences between the WTA and ATP tour, and leave my suggestion that there could be a tournament like the Elite Trophy and a revision of the rankings system in the ATP tour. 03 Mar 2020 | Tennis & Bagels - Ep. 5: MIA Last week - Canadians Doing Well, Big 3 News and Dominance, Sharapova Retires | 00:30:31
It's incredibly hard to cover 2 weeks in 30 minutes. There's obviously way too much info, but I tried to focus on what mattered, firstly in an overall tennis view, then on Canadians (which I really want to see doing well), and my own interests. So, Big 3 giving no signs of relenting, Roger Federer skipping clay court season and Indian Wells and Miami because of a knee surgery, shout outs to Canadians doing well (get better soon, Bianca!) and a personal shout out to Thiago Wild, a Brazilian who just won his first ATP title! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/messageSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels. Who is Gustavo Guga Kuerten? He was more than the title of this podcast describes. Watching him play is a fantastic experience, and Kafelnikov, Roland Garros champion in 1996, described him as the Tennis Picasso. In this episode, I talk about Guga's career, and specifically about his triumphs in Roland Garros in 1997, 2000 and 2001. His story and career are anyhitng but ordinary. Full of 5 set thrillers, big scalps on all his tournaments in an era filled with grand slam champions hungry for more! What Guga did was truly an extraordinary, timeless achievement, with his career, and at Roland Garros. 29 Aug 2020 | Ep 31 P1 - US Open ATP Draw Preview With Owen Lewis From The Racket Blog | 01:20:33
The US Open will be the second Grand Slam of the year. And it comes after months of quarantine and a weekend after the Cincinnati Masters 1000. Several players are not in the draw, including 2 of the Big 3, Rafael Nadal, who chose to not come to North America, and Roger Federer, sidelined with a knee injury. But the field is still full of great talents, and promising new players. Plus, Novak Djokovic is playing. Who is the favourite? 01 Dec 2020 | Ep 46 - ATP Finals Review and Future of the Players | 01:11:55
In this episode we talk about the ATP Nitto Finals as it ends its time in London, now to be held in Turin starting 2021. Danill Medvedev was the winner, not losing any matches this time in contrast with last season, when he lost every single one. On his way, he beat Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Dominic Thiem, world's number 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Thiem also beat both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal en route to the final. His matches against the world's top 2 players and GOAT candidates were arguably the best ones of the tournament. The future of these players is interesting: where we would normally have gotten a Djokovic vs Nadal final, we got a Medvedev vs Thiem, as both of them beat the Big 3 members in the semis. What will happen in the next slams? Do these results mean something or are they just hiccoughs? Plus, we have a great announcement in this episode! 02 Nov 2020 | Ep 43 - Paris Masters Preview, Vienna, Millman's First Title | 00:50:16
Vansh and I discuss Vienna, where Djokovic lost shockingly to Sonego, a Lucky Loser, but cliched year end number 1 for the sixth time in the ATP rankings. And then Rublev got another title in his incredible 2020 season, beating Djokovic's conqueror in the final. On other news, Jonathan Millman finally won his first ATP title in the 250 level tournament in Nur-Sultan. Just a couple days after Vansh tweeted that he was a a sad list of best players that never won a title. Good on him that he managed to move to the winners circle! And then, Paris, where Nadal will play and has a chance (a big chance) of adding a third indoor hard court title to his name. His best chance yet, since he is physically fresh like he has never been before. Could be a catalyst to the ATP Finals in London right after. This episode was a little rushed in, so sorry if the quality isn't as great! This match is considered by many as the best match of all time. It was certainly one of the greatest, no doubt about it, not just because of great tennis, but because of what it meant at the time: the establishment of Nadal as a force to be recognized in tennis not just on clay, and the end of Federer's complete dominance of the tour and a 5 year streak of winning Wimbledon. They also chat about how Rafael Nadal's title is great, but does not give much indication in terms of how his Australian Open Campaign will turn out, and also about how Ash Barty, the World No. 1, is still by a large margin the best player in the world -- and we didn't even talk about points. 05 Feb 2022 | Australian Open Recap - Rafael Nadal is still dangerous, Ash Barty is a servebot? | 01:48:03
Rafael Nadal, winner of the 2022 Australian Open, a double career Grand Slam, and 21 major titles. The lead is his. Is he the player to beat? How close are the next generation of players, those 25 and under, to finally take the lead and become the next greats? When will Medvedev, Tsitsipas, or anyone else finally conquer their doubts and the Big 3 in a Grand Slam final? Andre, Vansh, and Owen discuss tactics, strategies and are probably a little too harsh on Medvedev this time around. We also discuss the win of Ash Barty Down Under, her home Slam. How important will it turn out to be for her career? Who can defeat her at her best? It looks like Barty came to chage the status quo and establish big serving and slicing as new weapons in the women's game - ones that can be replicated by anyone, regardless of how tall they are. And seriously, very seriously, all players should practice playing against backhand slices far more often. But Collins did a great job in her first Grand Slam final. 24 Feb 2022 | A loose recap: Alcaraz, Auger-Aliassime, and multiple tennis rants | 01:27:37
Grab a coffee, a bagel, sit back and relax. This episode started with an idea of covering Félix Auger-Aliassime's title run and final run the week after, Carlos Alcaraz's ridiculous talent for tennis, some of the WTA events and that was it. turned out as a rant on the current ATP Top 10 level, how Rublev has plateaued, how the WTA is simply amazing right now with the entire Top 10 and more capable of winning major titles and playing fantastic matches, a Wimbledon rant and more. Off the record, we even talked NFT's and a very... peculiar film called 7 Days in Hell. Watch at your own risk, we simply couldn't leave this in. Gosh we even forgot to end the episode.... 10 Mar 2022 | Another loose recap + loosely chatting about Indian Wells | 01:17:53
*SORRY ABOUT THE AUDIO QUALITY. Andre's mic cable broke, so he was using the absolutely last resort, the nemesis of any sound editor: the computer mic. What a nightmare. I am really sorry about that* Hi! We were super busy with other life things, so tennis (which was undeniably in a more lukewarm part of the season) took a bit of a backseat place. But we`re HERE! And excited to see what happens at Indian Wells, the Tennis Paradise. Who will win ? Is Medvedev going to find better form, now as the new World No. 1? Is Rafael Nadal going to keep his streak going and add a 4th hard court title to his already unreal 2022 season? And what the heck will happen in the WTA draw? Which rivalries will dominate the circuit? Ash Barty is still out since Australia, so there is an absence of an unstoppable force on the tour right now (which Andre hopes will be occupied by Leylah Fernandez). 26 Mar 2022 | The Barty Farewell Party :( | 01:01:44
Never are we ever prepared for a player's retirement. But literally nobody could have prepared for Ashleigh Barty's retirement. The World No. 1 was arguably the most dominant female player since Serena Williams, staying at the top of the game for 120 weeks and winning Wimbledon, Roland Garros, and, her last tournament as it turned out, the Australian Open in 2022. What could we say, all the exciting rivalries that could be, are no more, including more of Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka matchups. But, we also recognize that she is doing that after finding it is the right time for her to do so, and pursue new dreams and challenges. 09 Apr 2022 | Swiatek, Alcaraz win the Miami Open. What now in the clay season? | 01:16:30
In this episode, we go back to some overall thoughts on the last hard court tournament before we finally embark into the clay court season -- which we've been waiting for a long time now! Iga Swiatek got to extreme new heights, not only winning the Sunshine Double with the Miami Open title, but also reaching the World No. 1 ranking, completing a sweep of all WTA 1000 events of the season so far, and extending her winning streak to 17. And clay is her favourite surface, so it's now quite hard to imagine what could stop her now. On the men's side, Carlos Alcaraz keeps showing everyone that he's been worth the hype. We can always expect him to deliver, not only good tennis, but also good and consistent wins. At 18 years old, he is the youngest Miami Open champion ever, and 3rd youngest Masters 1000 champion overall. With th e clay season coming up, are we already considering him a Roland Garros contender? On other news, we bid our early farewell to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who announced his retirement from tennis at Roland Garros, the French major. Only fitting. What a phenomenal player. 28 Apr 2022 | Insider view - Andre at the Billie Jean King Cup in Vancouver | 00:52:09
The Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers two weeks ago saw many nations qualify to the Bille Jean King Cup Finals taking place in November 2022. It also saw Andre, the creator of this podcast and Social Media at Tennis Canada, get real close to Leylah Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, Gaby Dabrowski, Francoise Abanda and Carol Zhao! With the tie in Vancouver, Andre got to experience a lot of what it is that makes the BJK Cup special for fans and players, even though the tournament itself may seem to be struggling deeply with star power and prestige lately. Listen as Owen ask several question that many die-hard tennis fans would love to know the answer for... just don't expect Andre to have all those answers lol Follow TNNS and communicate any bugs and fixes, or just give them a shout out: @tnnsapp Follow Tennis and Bagels: Twitter @TennisAndBagels Andre Rolemberg @RolembergAndre Vansh Vermani @vanshv2k Owen Lewis @tennisnation Check out Popcorn Tennis! 19 May 2022 | Rome Reverie: incredible heights achieved by No.1's Iga Swiatek and Novak Djokovic | 01:16:11
Iga Swiatek is the favourite for Roland Garros, there's no question about it. It looks like even in her worst, she is just too good for the entire field. Ons Jabeur went on a great winning streak of her own, winning the title in Madrid and reaching the final in Rome the week after, but ran out of steam against the World No.1, raising the actual main question surrounding Swiatek: who will beat her and when? It would be a devastating loss if she doesn't win the French Open in Roland Garros, but she won't win forever (although the likelihood of her next loss being greater in the grass season.) And what to say of Novak Djokovic? Absent for most tournaments of the year, came back rusty and losing matches, getting bageled in his hometown, losing to the player who is the most taunted to become the greatest of his generation, Carlos Alcaraz, in a titanic match, only to come back to Rome and win his 38th Masters 1000 title, picking up his 1000th win on the way. Who will stop Djokovic? Is Nadal healthy enough? Is Alcaraz ready to win a Grand Slam? Is Tsitsipas going to find a way to exorcise his demons? 31 May 2022 | Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal ch. 59 and Roland Garros midpoint | 01:20:25
NOTE: Amazon Prime is free to watch during the Nadal-Djokovic quarter-final ONLY IN FRANCE. We sit down and try to predict what Novak Djokovic will need to do in order to bear Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros on Tuesday, what can Rafa do to counter any of Nole's tactics, and whether any of their previous matches this year present any clue as to what this match will look like. All we know as that we hope for a great and long five-set match. We also conclude with long thoughts on the current state of the WTA's Top 10, and that although they are really good, they have been very unlucky with injuries recently. With that being said, who is left in the draw that has the game and consistency to push Iga Swiatek to the limit, and maybe even beat her? 17 Aug 2022 | Serena Williams' GOAT career: Vansh and Steve Flink special | 00:49:00
This is a really special episode. The legendary Serena Williams has announced she is “evolving away from tennis” this week in a magnificent Vogue article. No better guest to help Vansh breakdown Serena’s legendary career and her legacy and place in tennis history than Hall of Famer Steve Flink. They discuss her career in depth, along with the influential role of her older sister Venus. Towards the end, we pivot to a discussion on the men’s favorites and title contenders at the US Open. A groundbreaker, trailblazer in all areas of her life, Serena Williams won a whopping 23 Grand Slam titles over a 20+-year long career. Now at 41 years old, the legendary American announced during the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada, that this will be her last season, and her final stage could not be any more fitting than the Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows during the US Open in New York. 20 Feb 2023 | Alcaraz, Swiatek back in action; Medvedev, Fritz in the winners circle | 01:08:17
How great it is to see Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz back in action! Swiatek showed us all once more how dominant she can be - 2022 was not a fluke. While we understand that she got a somewhat favourable draw, it only shows that one must be at their absolute best to challenge here, something unfortunately Jessica Pegula, a favourite here in the podcast, was not able to achieve on Sunday in Doha. Carlos Alcaraz brought back all the swag we missed, along with his great shot-making and tennis IQ. Nothing seems to be lacking: the power, the accuracy, the timing, the shot selection, the incredible energy. Buenos Aires was probably the best choice for his come back! And major props to Cam Norrie for playing his best and believing until the end - made us wish there were a third set. To conclude, we come back to the progress Daniil Medvedev has made since Vienna last year, how he is once again not only finding some of his best level, but also showcasing his outstanding problem-solving skills, and making especially that Rotterdam final against Jannik Sinner turn into the match he wanted. Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz is showing encouraging signs after his title in Delray Beach that he's going to be maximizing his game and believing he can win against anyone on tour - with his serve and excellent groundstrokes, he is not to be underestimated by no one. We also go on a tangent about Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, because why not. Thanks for listening! 01 Mar 2023 | Krejcikova - the only one who knows how to beat Swiatek? | 01:20:12
Another week, another title for Ig... Barbora Krejcikova?? The former World No.2 is coming back from an elbow injury, but seems to have found all the great shots and on-court intelligence that led her to a Roland Garros title back in 2021 - and the key to defeating Iga Swiatek in finals. On top of that, she achieved a major feat in defeating the nos 1, 2, and 3 in the world en route to the title, coming back from a bagel in the first set against Aryna Sabalenka, and a tough battle against Jessica Pegula, to earn her first WTA 1000 title in Dubai. Interesting stuff ahead if she stays healthy... On other news, Andy Murray seems to have found a special level in 2023. still having to earn all his wins in epic deciding sets, but the level he's found in Doha was quite special - including the epic, insane, roller coaster win over Jiri Lehecka from match points down. Special mention for Félix Auger-Aliassime, who has put up an immense fight against the unfavorable match-up against Daniil Medvedev, who went on to win the title, his second in a row. And the Norrie Alcaraz rivalry catches fire! After losing to Carlitos in Buenos Aires the week prior, Cameron Norrie didn't let the disappointment hit him and he claimed the Rio de Janeiro title in three great sets of tennis. Although Carlos Alcaraz was suffering from an injury, now confirmed to be a hamstring strain, he still produced some of the shots of the year. Just insane talent. Good wins for Hubert Hurkacz and Camila Giorgi, coming back from tough periods with tough losses (and Giorgi literally won her title as we recorded lol) Thanks for listening! 08 Mar 2023 | Is Medvedev back? Reviewing Dubai, Acapulco, Santiago, Austin and Monterrey tournaments | 01:10:15
Daniil Medvedev seems to have found a lot of confidence in his game: with great wins under his belt now, including Novak Djokovic, Felis Auger-Aliassime, and Andrey Rublev, he is truly back to the Top 10 and will remain there. But can he win more Grand Slams? Can he become World No.1 again? We still need to watch more for that... On other news, Alex de Minaur wins the battle of tough conditions in Acapulco, where it seems only he was able to master the humidity. Nico Jarry made the most of his comeback by winning the title in his hometown of Santiago, Chile, while Donna Vekic defeated Carolina Garcia for the title in Monterrey in her own comeback story, and young Ukrainian talent Marta Kostyuk finally claimed her first WTA title in Austin - and coincidentally over a Russian player, Varvara Gracheva, with whom she did not shake hands at the net, in a pre-match agreement from both players likely initiated by the Ukrainian. Kostyuk has been vocal about the war and her views on Russian and Belarussian players since the beginning, so it was an expected, but still impactful gesture. Thanks for listening! 18 Apr 2020 | Ep 11 - Wimbledon History Part 1: From the Game's Origins to The Second World War | 00:37:30
This podcast is an informative episode about the history of the most famous tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon, The Championships. Here, I describe and comment a little on the most influential people in the history of the Grand Slam, such as players and founders. Wimbledon is arguably the single most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, and it's history spans now across 3 different centuries, and there is where the very sport of tennis as we love today, was born. I had to leave out too many great information, but I tried to focus on a timeline of major events and players that made Wimbledon and tennis wha they are today. Grab some strawberries and cram, and hope you enjoy this episode! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tennis-and-bagels/messageSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels. 20 Mar 2023 | Indian Wells - Elena Rybakina, Carlos Alcaraz rise above the desert mountains | 01:00:10
It's a wrap on Indian Wells! The tournament with unique conditions, hard courts slow as clay, and a reputation as the fifth grand slam, gave tennis fans around the world plenty of entertainment, and nerds like us plenty to think and talk about. Elena Rybakina powered her way through to win her first-ever WTA 1000 title, and did so with a bang: by completely blowing 2022 champion and World No.1 Iga Swiatek off the court in the semifinals, and taking her sweet revenge over World No.2 and Australian Open champion (b. Rybakina in final) Aryna Sabalenka. Carlos Alcaraz did not drop a set in the tournament, seeing off rivals Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev, in convincing wins. The level of tennis Alcaraz is playing, the level of fitness, on-court awareness, tennis IQ, and shot-making, are all out of this world, and it's VERY hard not to keep hyping him and believing he can ascend to the level of the all-time greats. 30 Apr 2023 | Swiatek and Alcaraz: New Clay Royalty? - With Jack Edward | 00:37:31
Vansh gets Jack Edward on Tennis and Bagels Podcast to chat about the tournaments in Barcelona, Stuttgart, Munich, Banja Luka, and we get a lot of depth in the analysis of the current WTA and ATP tours landscape heading into the second Grand Slam of the year. While Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek blew their minds away, Vansh and Jack chat about potential threats to their quest to Roland Garros glory: is Aryna Sabalenka ready to push it to the next level on clay? Is Ons Jabeur going to get healthy for Paris? Is Paula Badosa find her best tennis again? On the men's side, we saw Holger Rune showing what he's capable of, and that he can still get even better. Does that warrant him a 2nd favourite at the French Open? Is Jannik Sinner going to be fully healthy to make a deep run in France? And the biggest question of all: are Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic going to be ready for the biggest battle ground of this Big 3 rivalry in this decade? Listen now and let us know what you think! 09 May 2023 | Madrid Open recap - what does it mean for Roland-Garros? - with Mario Boccardi | 01:03:09

They recap all things Madrid Open with discussion on Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and other feel-good stories. Also a preview to Rome, the Italian Open, and a discussion about Novak Djokovic and the other top contenders for RG (never rule Rafael Nadal out). They also analyze some of the valid complaints of people this fortnight about the organization & treatment of WTA/ATP Tour players in Madrid. 21 May 2023 | Rafael Nadal withdraws from Roland-Garros, possible 2024 retirement - what now? | 00:54:31
For the first time since 2004, Rafael Nadal will not be in Paris for Roland Garros. The 14-time champion has a 98% winning percentage at the French Open, losing only 3 matches and pushed to five sets only 3 times - all of which he won. But in 2023, Nadal was forced to withdraw due to a persisting injury picked up at the Australian Open in January. Now what? With him in the draw, it's easy to pick him as a favourite - almost a duty. But now, with Novak Djokovic not at his best, Stefanos Tsitsipas getting back to his best, Carlos Alcaraz back at World No. 1, Daniil Medvedev playing the best tennis he's ever played on clay (which has now put him at No.1 in the ATP Tour singles Race ranking), and Holger Rune capitalizing on his immense potential, the door seems wide open. Just as it was back in 2004, when Gaston Gaudio won at Roland-Garros, coming back from two sets to love to beat none other than Guillermo Coria in the final. And then there's the possible retirement news. We don't have much to say about this, except that we hope Nadal will be fully healthy and that he finds the joy in playing tennis again. 25 May 2023 | Rome Recap - Elena Rybakina and Daniil Medvedev switch focus to Roland-Garros | 01:07:49
After a far less-than-ideal tournament in Rome with many rain delays and a clear demonstration that the men's event is still the most important thing, we still got to enjoy some seriously good tennis. While neither one of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were not present in the final after a remarkable 18 years, the new guard has stepped up to bring the level we all expect from one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. Holger Rune was responsible for stopping Djokovic from reaching another final, defeating the 22-time major champion in the quarter-finals. But arguably the story of the men's event was the self-proclaimed clay-hater and hard court specialist Daniil Medvedev, who showed tremendous form on clay after never having won a single match in Rome - and finally took down Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune on rout to his sixth ATP Masters 1000 title. What will he accomplish at Roland Garros, now that he is No.1 in the Race and the World No.2? On the women's side, Iga Swiatek started her title defense as well as she could possibly hope for, losing two games in two matches. But the ending was far from ideal from the dominant World No.1, as she was forced to retire against Elena Rybakina after two exciting sets of tennis with an injury. If her Roland Garros title defense was already looking more difficult due to the newly energized Aryna Sabalenka, champion in Madrid over the Pole herself, now that Elena Rybakina is showing great form on clay, an injury was the last thing Swiatek wanted. Is the 2023 WTA Big 3 going to give the world another series of tennis showdowns in Paris? Are we looking at the Stuttgart, Madrid, or Rome champion as the big favourite for the coveted title at Roland-Garros? 14 Jun 2023 | Roland-Garros recap with Steve Flink and Vansh | 01:02:03
As per usual, Steve Flink joins Vansh Vermani in a deep, highly knowledgeable and analytical talk about yet another Grand Slam tournament! They cover mostly the Men's tournament - as will be the new standard with Flink, as he moves on to focus more on the ATP side and simply enjoy Women's tennis. Novak Djokovic finally got ahead in the Slam race and stands alone for the first time with 23 major titles, a third French Open, and the triple career Grand Slam, a feat only surpassed by Steffi Graf, who has won all major tournaments at least four times each. But now Djokovic is the only one along Serena Williams to own 23 of the most coveted trophies in tennis, most in the Open Era and only one behind Margaret Court for all-time titles... and he is the overwhelming favourite to win Wimbledon. Regardless of what the GOAT debate means for anyone, one thing is certain: Novak Djokovic keeps pushing the limits of what is possible in tennis, and seems to be chasing nothing but his own records now. Can anyone ever be more accomplished than Novak Djokovic? The French Open is now over, and all the champions crowned. Iga Swiatek put on a great show yet again, but was pushed the hardest on route to a Roland-Garros title, finally able to defeat "surprise" finalist Karolina Muchova in three sets in the final. Creating her own history, Muchova herself managed an incredible feat reaching the championship match, notably taking down World No.2 and Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka in what was probably the most epic and dramatic match of the tournament.
