This week I speak to the wonderful actor Andrew P. Stephen about his life in theatre, his recent foray into television, notably on the on the Apple TV Show Silo, as well his newfound success in British Cinema. Myself and Andrew go way back, having first toured around the UK together in 2001, then again 3 years later in India & Singapore. We chat about an array of subjects including childhood TV crushes, the now unacceptable school yard game of kiss chase, the reality of tour love and friendship as well as the annoyance of spoon-fed telly and the over abundance of choice. We also link Andrew's love of denim to his early exposure to TV westerns and discuss the terrifying imagery of late 70s/early 80s supernatural TV programmes.

This week I chat to Scottish comedian Mark Nelson. We discuss such varied topics as the current pigeon-holing of generations, the ease at which new comedians can find an audience via social media, the loss of ethics after becoming a parent, as well as event television, including the questionable decision by the BBC in 1992 to broadcast the spoof special; Ghostwatch. We also talk about the expectation of an audience to recall storylines of shows that return after an extended hiatus, and get a little nostalgic about the golden age of 90s TV and music. Near to the end of this episode we do take a massive swerve and chat about politics for a few minutes, don't get nervous, we keep it amusing and we do get back on track soon enough.

This week on Television Times we welcome the iconic Icelandic comedian Bee Babylon. This episode was recorded backstage in the green room of The Stand in Newcastle, where we discussed everything from salty Icelandic fish to Scientology. Our free flow chat meanders between various subjects including Icelandic cinema (obvs), the possibility of being possessed by demons, plus the inner workings of an abattoir (not the backstage Edinburgh bar) which I describe in some detail. We will also be talking trash about hyper excitable American entertainment shows, so if that offends, you know what to do. There will be questionable Irish accents throughout plus my attempts at Icelandic, which I know some will consider problematic. Near to the end we take a swerve into a conversation about childhood trauma and growing up in less than loving households, but please stick with it, it's a great chat and one of my all time favourite episodes.

Today on Television Times we welcome the talented Mr Paul Critoph, a man of many talents. Paul is a brilliant actor, sensational photographer, and writer of the most gripping reviews of television and film, therefore it seemed silly not to get him on early. He even has his own grading system for such things! I worked with Paul on a number of pantomimes just over a decade ago and have remained firm friends ever since. We chat about his role in Dr Who plus his numerous TV and film roles, including chasing Chiwetel Ejiofor down an alleyway in Kinky Boots. We also discuss unsavoury character names, Paul's ability to quote The Krankies word for word, and the beauty of gentle Japanese television. We also touch upon 1980s animation which both had the ability to create a stirring within, whilst also giving us cold war dreams about nuclear annihilation. Paul is a very funny man who will no doubt have you guffawing throughout. This is easily one of the most enjoyable episodes so far and one I keep listening to just for fun. At one point Paul mentions his old instagram handle which has now been changed (link below). There's a little extra material at the end, so it might be time to investigate Patreon.

Today on Television Times we welcome the wonderful Scottish comedian Jay Lafferty. We talk about many things and a lot of it not television related, but it's an engrossing conversation nonetheless, albeit mostly about kids and films. Today I talk to Chris Dobrowolski, an artist, sculptor and performance lecturer. Due to initial technical difficulties I thought we could use it to our advantage and create a different kind of show. Unlike a conventional episode of Television Times, myself and Chris converse using only voice messages. Chris opens up about his family history and how it influences his creations. We swap stories which prompts me to play a few audio clips form my own Trans-Siberian audio diary from 2003. We end up discussing the dark side of humanity and for those triggered by things like Auschwitz and Hiroshima you may want to steer clear of those sections. Don't worry it's not all doom and gloom, there is much levity to be had and there's even some consensual phone tapping. This is by far the most artistic episode so far, well it would be wouldn't it?

This week's episode is a little different. I take to the streets of Edinburgh during The Fringe to accost tourists and artistes in town for the World's biggest arts festival. Armed with not one, but sometimes two microphones, I go in search of soundbite gold by asking people about their likes and dislikes when it comes to television. Along the way I bump into Comedians, singers, puppeteers and playwrights, who all share their thoughts about both the festival and the idiot box. I accidentally interview Matt Hutchinson (he'll be back), some guys from Boston, a man called Firefly (I have questions) and Aimee Taylor, who educates me about the dangers of Andrew Tate while singing the praises of Sherlock. I then chat Seinfeld with Moe Singleton before attempting to interview a silent Puppet called Bill, who was celebrating his 44th birthday. Later I bump into to the finely named John McEwan-Whyte who reveals an aversion to WWF, Buffy, and the over abundance of Boobs on TV. I was also lucky enough to come across the brilliant Stefania Licari who jumped on the mic to tell us about her experiences working as a doctor in the NHS before embarking on a stand up career, which led to her sold out show at this year's Fringe. Last but in no way least was the wonderful Kristina DeGiovanni, a diagnosed narcoleptic who's play The Temp was thrilling audiences at The Gilded Balloon. We discuss a myriad of topics including the unrealistic language spoken in the TV show Suits, and why the mini-series might be the way forward in a world with a shrinking attention span. Kristina educates me about the clever way in which Gen Z alter common phrases online in order to circumvent censorship, and expresses her anger toward 'Friends', which in her opinion, has made New York a more frustrating place to live.

This week I catch up with Canadian stand up comedian and writer J.J. Whitehead. Recorded in the foyer of The Stand's New Town Theatre during Edinburgh Fringe, we discuss many topics including face blindness, Naked Attraction (a stalwart of @tvtimespod at this point), the American writer's strike and the demise of The Jim Jefferies Show, on which J.J. was a writer. He explains how he ended up in Edinburgh over twenty years ago and unsuspectingly watched as the Fringe rolled into town, giving him just the nudge he needed to seek out his comedic destiny. We also share our joint fear of the old TV licence radar vans that used to roam the UK streets in search of people watching TV 'illegally', and conversely how that period was oddly followed by brief window whereby stealing content via bit-torrent was considered to be not an entirely illegal pastime. We also have a wee chinwag regarding the differences between Canadian sketch and Canadian Sitcoms, and how they were somewhat influenced by UK comedy, unlike their American counterparts.

This week's guest is top comedian Ben Clover who joins us live from Edinburgh Fringe, hence the clear background noise of people having way too much fun in the daytime. Ben explains how he changed his look post plague, to a point where his cohorts barely recognised him in the street. Regarding telly, we discuss the genius and brutality of shows such as Wolf, Deadwood and Utopia, the latter being a show that Ben could no doubt write a thesis on. The talent of David Simon comes up yet again, as does the creepiness behind Top of the Pops presenters and the BBC test card. Conversely, Ben also contemplates how different the TV show Life on Mars could have been had it been made just a few years later, with the investigative knowledge of Operation Yewtree within Sam Tyler's remit.

Today I speak to the indubitable Dane Simpson, fresh from a sell out run at this year's Edinburgh Fringe, which we of course discuss at length. Topics this week include the not-so-inclusive casting that still occurs in Australian reality television, Dane's childhood fascination with both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Pamela Anderson's V.I.P, plus the relatable struggle of having to travel the globe with multiple didgeridoos. Dane also conveys stories about his father, from being the fastest finger clicker in town, to being the proud owner of a dubiously adorned didjeridoo of his own. We also touch upon the worldwide phenomenon known as bush porn, which found its way into hedges in both urban and rural settings back in the day. Dane can currently be seen in both The Celebrity Amazing Race Australia and Thank God You're Here both on Network 10.

So this is going to be a little odd. Today I will be talking to myself and yes, it's as nutty as it sounds. There will be two of me, one interviewer, one interviewee, and yes we were both in the room at the same time, but only one of us kept stealing the other's biscuits. There will be some levity from 2007 in the form of a long lost podcast idea and much talk of the 80s tv show Knight Rider starring David Hasselhoff. One of us keeps interrupting, but somehow we muddle through and discuss the brilliance of Michael Crawford (pre-musical) and consider which tv show should be removed from our collective consciousness. And if that's not enough, there's also a belter of a song at the end that spans the entire 20th Century, what more could a person (or two) want?

Jack who famously hosted the UK's answer to Letterman in the late 90s and starred in the brilliant sketch show 'Absolutely' joins me for a chat about his career in television and how he deals with fame. I try and work out how I managed to get into the audience of both 'Mr Don & Mr George' and 'The Jack Docherty Show' before the internet age and ponder if it might be Jack who curated my musical taste after introducing audiences to Ben Folds Five and The Divine Comedy. This week is the first of two episodes featuring the outstanding actor Ben Crompton. Ben is fresh from The Full Monty TV series and Lockwood & Co, but is of course most known for playing Eddison Tollett (Dolorous Edd) in Game of Thrones, a show it turns out I haven't seen. Not to worry, I have seen Ben in lots of great shows such as Man Stroke Woman, The Reluctant Landlord, Motherland & Ideal, so there was still plenty to talk about. There was a lot of chat regarding 1970s television and the downright strange choices that were made to keep children entertained, most notably Noseybonk, a character I had somehow suppressed, quite rightly, not to mention the raggedy-ass hare in Pipkins. Ben also lifts the lid on a few trade secrets regarding filming the chilly scenes in Game of Thrones, which I have promised him I will watch, one day.

This Week I chat to award winning Swedish Director Sanna Lenken about her career in TV & Film. Sanna is one of the core people behind one of my favourite ever TV shows 'Tunna blå linjen' (The Thin Blue Line) which if you haven't seen, stop listening to this and track it down immediately. (Available on Viaplay in the UK). Sanna has directed two films 'My Skinny Sister' & 'Comedy Queen' both of which have won The Crystal Bear at The Berlin Film Festival, which is a remarkable achievement. I first met Sanna whilst working in a coffee shop in London in the late 90s, a period which we both look back on fondly, especially the £4 an hour wage!

This week on the pod we've only gone and got Mr Bloom, a.k.a. the amazing Ben Faulks. During our chat Ben reveals the origin story behind 'Mr Bloom's Nursery', tells of his love for pantomime both onstage and with the BBC and divulges which TV shows he loves and loathes. Ben also explains his new initiative for nurseries and schools called 'Let's Grow', a worthy and admirable concept that immerses kids in nature and imaginative play. Ben is also an author of four Children's books, a subject I broach with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. For regular listeners, this is a rare clean episode free of mucky language and rude questions, we'll get back on that particular horse next week. In a slightly more serious episode we discuss the role of the police in modern society and reflect upon the true cost of cheap labour. We also debate the positive role A.I. might play in future television productions and how it is now normal to track our children via technology. There is some levity as I explain to Cilla how I accidentally bought an overpriced wooden monkey during my first visit to Sweden, while Cilla tells us about her initial foray into writing, which involved and old typewriter and a nimble black and white movie star.

This week's guest is the Australian comedian and journalist Ange Lavoipierre, who describes the tricky task of balancing a career in both absurdist comedy and serious journalism in an age of social media. Ange tells us how, at aged just nineteen, she found herself in the presence of the Australian Prime Minister whilst working for ABC and how she struggles with theatre terminology in rehearsal. I explain why Crocs don't work in London while Ange conveys her theory on why some deaths are funny on screen and others are not. There is much talk of the horror genre and our own personal barriers to certain narratives, and speaking of spooky tales, we also touch upon the inevitable subject of artificial Intelligence whereby Ange relays the story of Loab, an unsettling account of what Generative A.I. can come up with. We also consider the madness of being able to smoke on planes (which was banned way later than you think) and how the lack of integrity around information is becoming a tad worrisome. I should mention there are huge spoilers for White Lotus Season 2 and The Last of Us, so skip past those segments if you haven't yet seen them.

He's back! Friend of the podcast Paul Critoph returns to review the television of the last twelve months. There is much talk of elimination game shows, mostly Korean, including physical 100, Squid Game-The Challenge and The Devil's plan, as well as the James Bond themed game show Road to a Million. I explain how watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia led me to watching football documentaries, having had no previous interest in footie, which in turn led to the consuming of multiple behind the scenes celebrity docus. Paul has massive spoilers for the final outing of Barry, so be aware if you haven't yet watched that particular season. I then tiptoe around the current episodes of Fargo and The Fall of the House of Usher while Paul educates me on all things Drag Race. As it's a new year and myself and Paul chatted for England, there will be a bonuspod this week whereby we talk about recent films and American Theme park rides, so strap in for that!

For our first proper interview episode of the year, we welcome the great Nicola Mantalios to the studio. We talk sourdough history and the price of bread in general, the perils of sitting in the front row and the differences between playing a character onstage versus being yourself and how, as a female comic, she has faced extra pressures that have influenced her onstage persona. I bring up how difficult it can be to suspend your belief while watching TV and how hard it is not to break it all down whilst distracted, while Nicola shares her love for both Mr Bean and Basil Fawlty and how their lack of social skills informs her own comedy. We discuss how overwhelming it can be to follow hyper realistic language in an age of peak TV and Nicola tells us about her new stage show 'Meeting Mary' which is based on her personal experience of being ex-communicated from a religious cult, which is currently in development for television.

Fresh from releasing his autobiography 'Crackerjack to Vegas' Bernie chats about his failed attempts to become a plumber which in turn led him to join the RAF and fly to football matches in Cold War bombers. Bernie talks warmly about his comedy cohorts including Bob Monkhouse and Les Dawson, the latter urging him to become a prop comic, something Bernie is grateful for to this day. Learn how Oswald the Ostrich came into being and why Bernie once took him up in a microlight aircraft to appease a reporter from The Daily Mirror. Bernie is clearly touched to be referenced in an Inside No.9 episode and speaks fondly of all involved. He also spills the beans on the televisual debacle that was 'It's a Royal Knockout', along with behind the scenes anecdotes from his life in TV including the seminal kids TV Show 'Crackerjack'.

This week my guest is the wonderful Swedish actor Per Lasson, who joined me on his day off from filming Season 3 of 'Tunna blå linjen' to chat about such varied subjects as uncomfortable age gaps, close bonds formed in the workplace, and why comedy and horror do not mix. We ponder why Scandinavian TV has soared in popularity in recent years and why the anglicisation of their titles are sometimes way off. Per also tells us about his new project 'Whiskey on the Rocks', an amazing true story about a Nuclear Russian submarine that ran aground in Sweden in 1981, and explains how he deals with his new found fame. We also have a wee chat about the sometimes problematic films that are screened on both planes and ferries and why A.I. might not be such a bad thing after all.

In this conversation we discuss our experiences with the paranormal, including lucid dreaming and theatrical superstitions, whilst exploring the psychology behind fear and belief. I explain the challenges of overcoming a criminal mindset while Richard recounts anecdotes from his early appearances on television and how he overcame nervousness thanks to Richard Madeley. We also discuss the difficulty of suspending your disbelief while watching TV, the importance of authenticity in comedy and the demise of event television. Richard also explains why he has no interest whatsoever in music and is therefore immune to jingles.

This week we welcome the beloved prankster, broadcaster and author Dom Joly to the podcast. I was lucky enough to talk to Dom backstage before one of his performances of 'The Conspiracy Tourist' whereby he opened up extensively about the trials and tribulations around his seminal Channel 4 show Trigger Happy TV, including scenes he couldn't air and having no control over the shoddy American remake. He also talks about how his follow up TV show 'This is Dom Joly' was painfully misunderstood, and how he really felt whilst participating in 'Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls'. Dom shares his love of Gogglebox and reality TV in general, and reveals how he'd still rather have made it as a musician than been successful in comedy. Dom now finds joy in travelling and writing his books, the latest of which deals with the growing problem of online Conspiracy theories including why some people think Finland might not actually exist.

This week we welcome the brilliant actor and character comedian Alex Lowe to the podcast, recorded backstage at The Tyne Theatre during his tour of Clinton Baptiste's RollerGhoster. We talk about spooky stuff including ghosts and the unscrupulous tactics used by touring psychics, as well as the influences that informed the creation of Clinton Baptiste and his back story. Alex takes us on a journey through his career in television and radio, as well as how he first took to the West End stage aged just thirteen. Alex explains some of the more difficult situations he finds himself in whilst touring as Clinton, and how a changing audience can be problematic in the current era. We also discuss how the BBC can sometimes come across as patronising whilst trying to appear both inclusive and impartial, and why certain comedy references might not quite cut it with a younger crowd, especially if you name drop Judith Chalmers!

This week we welcome U.S. Stand-up Mike Lukas to the podcast for a chat about all things comedy. We talk about his family's Lithuanian roots and the fear of Russian invasion that still haunts the community. Mike explains why people tend to fear change, regardless of the reasoning behind it and why the world might just need a reset. We chat way too much about hair, baldness and wigs before settling into a convo about Mike's Funny Muscle books and the mechanics of building a comedy set. We then tiptoe around the tricky topics of the day and discuss pushing back against our own programming when trying to adapt to new ways of thinking. Mike takes us through his journey as a stand-up, from sweaty clubs to performing at the Montreal Comedy Festival, which in turn led to him being booked on the Tonight Show and Conan, where he rubbed shoulders with celebrities such as Mr T. Subsequently Mike was booked to perform on the Second City comedy tour which ultimately landed in Las Vegas during 9/11, where he pranked the residents of his apartment complex along with his room-mate Jason Sudeikis.

Today we welcome the man who was at the absolute centre of TV and celebrity culture in the 1990s. Long before TFI Friday and Britpop there was a Friday night Channel 4 show that drew an enormous viewership among the young, and that show was 'The Word', a television show helmed by Mr Terry Christian. Starting out in radio at the age of just 19, Terry has had a remarkable career that put him front and centre of the Manchester music scene, and later in a position to fight for those bands to gain exposure on Channel 4. It hasn't been easy and Terry pulls no punches in telling his story. This week we welcome Graham Fellows, the man behind both Jilted John & John Shuttleworth, for a cheeky chinwag about his legendary career in music and television. Yamaha and Casio keyboards feature heavily in this chat, as does John's dog Kirsty. Throughout our conversation, Graham pokes fun while I try not to laugh, as we cover such meteoric subjects as; doorstep drinks deliveries in the 1970s, the possibility of John doing ASMR videos on TikTok, why podcasts should never be over-edited, and how a song lyric earned him an almost lifetime supply of Bounty bars. We chat about his appearances on 'Top of The Pops' as Jilted John, how that character was formed as a reaction to the punk singers of the time, and how after signing a publishing deal, he accidentally created John Shuttleworth on the same day. I explain how I nabbed a job selling Yamaha keyboards in Harrods, even though I couldn't play a note, while Graham divulges why his keyboards sometimes stop working on stage, leading to unplanned comic moments. We also cover his collaboration with Count Arthur, his appearances on the Leslie Grantham-helmed 'Paradise Club' and Jonathan Ross's Saturday Night Zoo, and why, as a kid, he would have loved to have hung out with The Monkees.
