21 Jun 2023 | S1 EP5: Andrew P. Stephen | 00:58:24
This week I speak to the wonderful actor Andrew P. Stephen about his life in theatre, his recent foray into television, notably on the on the Apple TV Show Silo, as well his newfound success in British Cinema. Myself and Andrew go way back, having first toured around the UK together in 2001, then again 3 years later in India & Singapore. We chat about an array of subjects including childhood TV crushes, the now unacceptable school yard game of kiss chase, the reality of tour love and friendship as well as the annoyance of spoon-fed telly and the over abundance of choice. We also link Andrew's love of denim to his early exposure to TV westerns and discuss the terrifying imagery of late 70s/early 80s supernatural TV programmes. 05 Jul 2023 | S1 EP7: Mark Nelson | 00:55:37
This week I chat to Scottish comedian Mark Nelson. We discuss such varied topics as the current pigeon-holing of generations, the ease at which new comedians can find an audience via social media, the loss of ethics after becoming a parent, as well as event television, including the questionable decision by the BBC in 1992 to broadcast the spoof special; Ghostwatch. We also talk about the expectation of an audience to recall storylines of shows that return after an extended hiatus, and get a little nostalgic about the golden age of 90s TV and music. Near to the end of this episode we do take a massive swerve and chat about politics for a few minutes, don't get nervous, we keep it amusing and we do get back on track soon enough. If you enjoy this episode please follow the show wherever you get podcasts and come back next week for more levity. 12 Jul 2023 | S1 EP8: Bee Babylon | 00:59:56
This week on Television Times we welcome the iconic Icelandic comedian Bee Babylon. This episode was recorded backstage in the green room of The Stand in Newcastle, where we discussed everything from salty Icelandic fish to Scientology. Our free flow chat meanders between various subjects including Icelandic cinema (obvs), the possibility of being possessed by demons, plus the inner workings of an abattoir (not the backstage Edinburgh bar) which I describe in some detail. We will also be talking trash about hyper excitable American entertainment shows, so if that offends, you know what to do. There will be questionable Irish accents throughout plus my attempts at Icelandic, which I know some will consider problematic. Near to the end we take a swerve into a conversation about childhood trauma and growing up in less than loving households, but please stick with it, it's a great chat and one of my all time favourite episodes. Please follow the show wherever you get podcasts and leave a review so we can keep growing. 14 Jul 2023 | S1 EP9: Kai Humphries | 00:51:04
On today's episode of Television Times we welcome the brilliant Geordie comedian Kai Humphries. It's quite football heavy for a non-baller like me (I blame Ted Lasso and Welcome to Wrexham) plus lots of chat about the benefits of living up North, and even further North. There are massive spoilers regarding the final season of Succession, so avoid that section if you haven't finished that particular televisual journey. We chat about Kai's love for MTV music videos, his new obsession with the Sopranos, plus how the chore of educating himself on classic comedy led him to appreciate Seinfeld, and how that's now marred by the Michael Richards controversy. There's chat about creepy houses and the scary imagery that Stephen King manages to plant in our brains, and not only through the medium of film and TV. 18 Jul 2023 | S1 EP10: Paul Critoph | 01:17:00
Today on Television Times we welcome the talented Mr Paul Critoph, a man of many talents. Paul is a brilliant actor, sensational photographer, and writer of the most gripping reviews of television and film, therefore it seemed silly not to get him on early. He even has his own grading system for such things! I worked with Paul on a number of pantomimes just over a decade ago and have remained firm friends ever since. We chat about his role in Dr Who plus his numerous TV and film roles, including chasing Chiwetel Ejiofor down an alleyway in Kinky Boots. We also discuss unsavoury character names, Paul's ability to quote The Krankies word for word, and the beauty of gentle Japanese television. We also touch upon 1980s animation which both had the ability to create a stirring within, whilst also giving us cold war dreams about nuclear annihilation. Paul is a very funny man who will no doubt have you guffawing throughout. This is easily one of the most enjoyable episodes so far and one I keep listening to just for fun. At one point Paul mentions his old instagram handle which has now been changed (link below). There's a little extra material at the end, so it might be time to investigate Patreon. 21 Jul 2023 | S1 EP11: Raul Kohli | 00:55:00
Today on the pod we welcome top comedian Raul Kohli. He is a regular at The Stand Comedy Club and will soon be heading to Edinburgh to perform his new hour long show 'Raul Britannia'. During our podchat we talk about the complexities of travelling for work, famous namesakes, his fury regarding the final seasons of Game of Thrones, The Sopranos (always popular) as well as Raul's love of WWE. We also discuss our personal experiences of being in India and invariably end up touching on Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism. 25 Jul 2023 | S1 EP12: Daniel Muggleton | 00:44:13
Today we welcome the very funny Daniel Muggleton to the studio. Daniel is an Australian comic who just happened to be passing through as part of his national tour and graced us with his presence. We cover a myriad of topics including why it's best to go with the flow when it comes to audio products, whiteboard efficiency and the servitude around Edinburgh Fringe and the comedy circuit in general. We also discuss our joint love of Seinfeld and resurrect the problematic chestnut that is blacking up on telly in the way too recent past, particularly on Australian TV. 28 Jul 2023 | S1 EP13: Jay Lafferty | 00:58:10
Today on Television Times we welcome the wonderful Scottish comedian Jay Lafferty. We talk about many things and a lot of it not television related, but it's an engrossing conversation nonetheless, albeit mostly about kids and films. At points it might sound like we are sponsored by the now deceased rental chain Blockbuster Video, a company I feel might feature heavily going forward. Our convo bounces from introducing kids to the Marvel Universe to looking after a newborn during a global pandemic. Jay talks openly about her experience of undergoing a decade of IVF treatment and we swap stories regarding the internal tug of being away from our kids for prolonged lengths of time. We do have a wee chat about the current season of Black Mirror (so there will be spoilers) and how watching such shows before slumber can lead to vivid nightmares. We also discuss how Jay gave herself concussion whilst learning to pole dance for her new Edinburgh show 'Bahookie', so there's something for everyone! This week I talk to James Freedman, a man who is considered to be The World's No.1 Pickpocket and someone Derren Brown hailed as 'a master of the deceptive arts'. In this episode we discuss a myriad of topics including childhood shoplifting, the best way to lock 'yer bike and how to avoid fraudsters during the current tsunami of online scams. We talk public information films and the confusing messaging regarding which adults children were supposed to trust in the 1970s, plus James's invaluable contribution to both the TV shows 'Hustle' and 'The Real Hustle' as well as the films 'The Illusionist' and 'Les Miserables'. 16 Aug 2023 | S1 EP16: Chris Dobrowolski | 00:59:53
Today I talk to Chris Dobrowolski, an artist, sculptor and performance lecturer. Due to initial technical difficulties I thought we could use it to our advantage and create a different kind of show. Unlike a conventional episode of Television Times, myself and Chris converse using only voice messages. Chris opens up about his family history and how it influences his creations. We swap stories which prompts me to play a few audio clips form my own Trans-Siberian audio diary from 2003. We end up discussing the dark side of humanity and for those triggered by things like Auschwitz and Hiroshima you may want to steer clear of those sections. Don't worry it's not all doom and gloom, there is much levity to be had and there's even some consensual phone tapping. This is by far the most artistic episode so far, well it would be wouldn't it? We chat about how Chris adapted to life in America where he spent his final year of high school playing basketball, as well as his decade long stint on the BBC Scotland comedy show 'Scot Squad' alongside Jack Docherty. Chris still has a lot of love for Dawson's Creek and the Two Ronnies, but nothing but scorn for reality television and Bing! We also chat about the 90s TV series The Lakes and Jonathan Creek, a show which Chris just happened to pop up on during its final outing in 2016. 28 Aug 2023 | S1 EP18: Live From EdFringe '23 | 00:59:05
This week's episode is a little different. I take to the streets of Edinburgh during The Fringe to accost tourists and artistes in town for the World's biggest arts festival. Armed with not one, but sometimes two microphones, I go in search of soundbite gold by asking people about their likes and dislikes when it comes to television. Along the way I bump into Comedians, singers, puppeteers and playwrights, who all share their thoughts about both the festival and the idiot box. I accidentally interview Matt Hutchinson (he'll be back), some guys from Boston, a man called Firefly (I have questions) and Aimee Taylor, who educates me about the dangers of Andrew Tate while singing the praises of Sherlock. I then chat Seinfeld with Moe Singleton before attempting to interview a silent Puppet called Bill, who was celebrating his 44th birthday. Later I bump into to the finely named John McEwan-Whyte who reveals an aversion to WWF, Buffy, and the over abundance of Boobs on TV. I was also lucky enough to come across the brilliant Stefania Licari who jumped on the mic to tell us about her experiences working as a doctor in the NHS before embarking on a stand up career, which led to her sold out show at this year's Fringe. Last but in no way least was the wonderful Kristina DeGiovanni, a diagnosed narcoleptic who's play The Temp was thrilling audiences at The Gilded Balloon. We discuss a myriad of topics including the unrealistic language spoken in the TV show Suits, and why the mini-series might be the way forward in a world with a shrinking attention span. Kristina educates me about the clever way in which Gen Z alter common phrases online in order to circumvent censorship, and expresses her anger toward 'Friends', which in her opinion, has made New York a more frustrating place to live. 06 Sep 2023 | S1 EP19: J.J. Whitehead | 00:53:44
This week I catch up with Canadian stand up comedian and writer J.J. Whitehead. Recorded in the foyer of The Stand's New Town Theatre during Edinburgh Fringe, we discuss many topics including face blindness, Naked Attraction (a stalwart of @tvtimespod at this point), the American writer's strike and the demise of The Jim Jefferies Show, on which J.J. was a writer. He explains how he ended up in Edinburgh over twenty years ago and unsuspectingly watched as the Fringe rolled into town, giving him just the nudge he needed to seek out his comedic destiny. We also share our joint fear of the old TV licence radar vans that used to roam the UK streets in search of people watching TV 'illegally', and conversely how that period was oddly followed by brief window whereby stealing content via bit-torrent was considered to be not an entirely illegal pastime. We also have a wee chinwag regarding the differences between Canadian sketch and Canadian Sitcoms, and how they were somewhat influenced by UK comedy, unlike their American counterparts. 13 Sep 2023 | S1 EP20: Ben Clover | 00:50:26
This week's guest is top comedian Ben Clover who joins us live from Edinburgh Fringe, hence the clear background noise of people having way too much fun in the daytime. Ben explains how he changed his look post plague, to a point where his cohorts barely recognised him in the street. Regarding telly, we discuss the genius and brutality of shows such as Wolf, Deadwood and Utopia, the latter being a show that Ben could no doubt write a thesis on. The talent of David Simon comes up yet again, as does the creepiness behind Top of the Pops presenters and the BBC test card. Conversely, Ben also contemplates how different the TV show Life on Mars could have been had it been made just a few years later, with the investigative knowledge of Operation Yewtree within Sam Tyler's remit. 20 Sep 2023 | S1 EP21: Dane Simpson | 00:48:38
Today I speak to the indubitable Dane Simpson, fresh from a sell out run at this year's Edinburgh Fringe, which we of course discuss at length. Topics this week include the not-so-inclusive casting that still occurs in Australian reality television, Dane's childhood fascination with both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Pamela Anderson's V.I.P, plus the relatable struggle of having to travel the globe with multiple didgeridoos. Dane also conveys stories about his father, from being the fastest finger clicker in town, to being the proud owner of a dubiously adorned didjeridoo of his own. We also touch upon the worldwide phenomenon known as bush porn, which found its way into hedges in both urban and rural settings back in the day. Dane can currently be seen in both The Celebrity Amazing Race Australia and Thank God You're Here both on Network 10. 27 Sep 2023 | S1 EP22: Steve Otis Gunn | 00:37:00
So this is going to be a little odd. Today I will be talking to myself and yes, it's as nutty as it sounds. There will be two of me, one interviewer, one interviewee, and yes we were both in the room at the same time, but only one of us kept stealing the other's biscuits. There will be some levity from 2007 in the form of a long lost podcast idea and much talk of the 80s tv show Knight Rider starring David Hasselhoff. One of us keeps interrupting, but somehow we muddle through and discuss the brilliance of Michael Crawford (pre-musical) and consider which tv show should be removed from our collective consciousness. And if that's not enough, there's also a belter of a song at the end that spans the entire 20th Century, what more could a person (or two) want? The podchat from 2007 was recorded backstage at the High Wycombe Swan Theatre with Woody Woodcock and Dom Clements. 04 Oct 2023 | S1 EP23: Jenny Tian | 00:58:33
This week's guest is the wonderful Australian comedian Jenny Tian, who I was lucky enough to record an episode with during this year's Edinburgh Fringe. Not only is there much chat about Kangaroos and the abundance of great Asian food in Australia, we also touch upon subjects such as the dangers of social media, the output of Chris Lilley and meeting your comedy heroes. We also discuss the difficulty of resuming normal behaviours in a post-Covid world, the horrors of earwigs and the brilliance of Mike White and Jessie Armstrong. 11 Oct 2023 | S1 EP24: Jack Docherty | 00:49:47
This week I can't believe it, but it's Mr Jack Docherty. Yes that one! Jack who famously hosted the UK's answer to Letterman in the late 90s and starred in the brilliant sketch show 'Absolutely' joins me for a chat about his career in television and how he deals with fame. I try and work out how I managed to get into the audience of both 'Mr Don & Mr George' and 'The Jack Docherty Show' before the internet age and ponder if it might be Jack who curated my musical taste after introducing audiences to Ben Folds Five and The Divine Comedy. Listen as I mispronounce the area of Edinburgh I'm staying in while Jack lifts the lid on the mayhem of hosting a flagship chat show during the height of Britpop. 18 Oct 2023 | S1 EP25: Ben Crompton (Part One) | 00:59:44
This week is the first of two episodes featuring the outstanding actor Ben Crompton. Ben is fresh from The Full Monty TV series and Lockwood & Co, but is of course most known for playing Eddison Tollett (Dolorous Edd) in Game of Thrones, a show it turns out I haven't seen. Not to worry, I have seen Ben in lots of great shows such as Man Stroke Woman, The Reluctant Landlord, Motherland & Ideal, so there was still plenty to talk about. There was a lot of chat regarding 1970s television and the downright strange choices that were made to keep children entertained, most notably Noseybonk, a character I had somehow suppressed, quite rightly, not to mention the raggedy-ass hare in Pipkins. Ben also lifts the lid on a few trade secrets regarding filming the chilly scenes in Game of Thrones, which I have promised him I will watch, one day. 25 Oct 2023 | S1 EP26: Ben Crompton (Part Two) | 00:58:04
This week's poddy-pod-podchat is part two of my conversation with the brilliant actor Ben Crompton, who came round to the studio back in the Summer. Find out how shredded paper ended up in Ben's underwear after shooting the wintery scenes in Game of Thrones and why the more successful you are, the more free swag you get. We try to decide whether or not a comedian should adjust their set depending on the audience, and why it's important not to jump to conclusions when meeting your heroes. Ben also brings up music and TV snobbery and why it's always worth rethinking your likes and dislikes, while I explain why David Essex still owes me a tenner and how I found myself in a room with One Direction and Boris Johnson. 01 Nov 2023 | S1 EP27: Sanna Lenken | 00:49:22
This Week I chat to award winning Swedish Director Sanna Lenken about her career in TV & Film. Sanna is one of the core people behind one of my favourite ever TV shows 'Tunna blå linjen' (The Thin Blue Line) which if you haven't seen, stop listening to this and track it down immediately. (Available on Viaplay in the UK). Sanna has directed two films 'My Skinny Sister' & 'Comedy Queen' both of which have won The Crystal Bear at The Berlin Film Festival, which is a remarkable achievement. I first met Sanna whilst working in a coffee shop in London in the late 90s, a period which we both look back on fondly, especially the £4 an hour wage! 08 Nov 2023 | S1 EP28: Ben Faulks | 00:47:31
This week on the pod we've only gone and got Mr Bloom, a.k.a. the amazing Ben Faulks. During our chat Ben reveals the origin story behind 'Mr Bloom's Nursery', tells of his love for pantomime both onstage and with the BBC and divulges which TV shows he loves and loathes. Ben also explains his new initiative for nurseries and schools called 'Let's Grow', a worthy and admirable concept that immerses kids in nature and imaginative play. Ben is also an author of four Children's books, a subject I broach with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. For regular listeners, this is a rare clean episode free of mucky language and rude questions, we'll get back on that particular horse next week. As an extra bonus this episode ends with a song from Ben himself, so be sure to stick around for that gem. This week I chat to Cilla Jackert, the screenwriter behind the hit Swedish TV show 'Tunna blå linjen'. In a slightly more serious episode we discuss the role of the police in modern society and reflect upon the true cost of cheap labour. We also debate the positive role A.I. might play in future television productions and how it is now normal to track our children via technology. There is some levity as I explain to Cilla how I accidentally bought an overpriced wooden monkey during my first visit to Sweden, while Cilla tells us about her initial foray into writing, which involved and old typewriter and a nimble black and white movie star. 23 Nov 2023 | S1 EP30: Ange Lavoipierre | 01:12:46
This week's guest is the Australian comedian and journalist Ange Lavoipierre, who describes the tricky task of balancing a career in both absurdist comedy and serious journalism in an age of social media. Ange tells us how, at aged just nineteen, she found herself in the presence of the Australian Prime Minister whilst working for ABC and how she struggles with theatre terminology in rehearsal. I explain why Crocs don't work in London while Ange conveys her theory on why some deaths are funny on screen and others are not. There is much talk of the horror genre and our own personal barriers to certain narratives, and speaking of spooky tales, we also touch upon the inevitable subject of artificial Intelligence whereby Ange relays the story of Loab, an unsettling account of what Generative A.I. can come up with. We also consider the madness of being able to smoke on planes (which was banned way later than you think) and how the lack of integrity around information is becoming a tad worrisome. I should mention there are huge spoilers for White Lotus Season 2 and The Last of Us, so skip past those segments if you haven't yet seen them. We chat fringe audience sizes, overcoming the fear of blood and spiders and why you shouldn't say the word 'bomb' whilst putting your belongings through the airport scanner. 22 Dec 2023 | S1 EP32: Chrimbo Special 2023 | 01:17:44
We're back with a Christmas bang and another clean episode of the pod, in language at least if not topic. For those with a keen ear, this episode dropped at 2.30pm, a perfect little nod to panto, a medium both of my guests know all too well. Today we have two heavyweights of the stage, Eric Potts and Brad Fitt, both of whom have been wowing audiences for years performing as Dames every Christmas in UK Panto, a genre I myself was involved with for a decade. Eric brings us memories of Classic Christmas Television and disturbing children's shows while Brad and I discuss the tricky task of protecting our kids from unsavoury imagery, the genius of Larry Grayson, and how a theatre tour of India in 2004 scarred us both. Being a Christmas episode, there is much talk of Morcambe & Wise, Dr Who and surprisingly, the fad that is Prime. If you like what you hear please Follow us on Social Media using the links below. 01 Jan 2024 | S1 EP33: TV Round Up of 2023 with Paul Critoph | 01:08:36
He's back! Friend of the podcast Paul Critoph returns to review the television of the last twelve months. There is much talk of elimination game shows, mostly Korean, including physical 100, Squid Game-The Challenge and The Devil's plan, as well as the James Bond themed game show Road to a Million. I explain how watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia led me to watching football documentaries, having had no previous interest in footie, which in turn led to the consuming of multiple behind the scenes celebrity docus. Paul has massive spoilers for the final outing of Barry, so be aware if you haven't yet watched that particular season. I then tiptoe around the current episodes of Fargo and The Fall of the House of Usher while Paul educates me on all things Drag Race. As it's a new year and myself and Paul chatted for England, there will be a bonuspod this week whereby we talk about recent films and American Theme park rides, so strap in for that! 26 Jan 2024 | S1 EP36: (Bonus) Films & Theme Parks with Paul Critoph | 00:19:25
In this mini-episode I bang on about the glorious film that is Wonka and the amazing pool of talent behind it, while Paul relays a recent trip to the cinema where a severe lack of etiquette seemed to prevail. I admit to liking slightly cheesy Christmas movies while Paul talks us through his recent trip to both Disney and Universal Studios in Florida, and the ways in which both try and squeeze every last cent out of their prospective visitors. 02 Jan 2024 | S1 EP34: Nicola Mantalios | 00:58:21
For our first proper interview episode of the year, we welcome the great Nicola Mantalios to the studio. We talk sourdough history and the price of bread in general, the perils of sitting in the front row and the differences between playing a character onstage versus being yourself and how, as a female comic, she has faced extra pressures that have influenced her onstage persona. I bring up how difficult it can be to suspend your belief while watching TV and how hard it is not to break it all down whilst distracted, while Nicola shares her love for both Mr Bean and Basil Fawlty and how their lack of social skills informs her own comedy. We discuss how overwhelming it can be to follow hyper realistic language in an age of peak TV and Nicola tells us about her new stage show 'Meeting Mary' which is based on her personal experience of being ex-communicated from a religious cult, which is currently in development for television. 27 Jan 2024 | S1 EP37: (Bonus) Coffee With Karen: Brew 1 | 00:19:39
This is the first part of a conversation with my friend and tattoo artist Karen Vranuch recorded in person. The subjects may vary, but of course we will hover around the topic of telly. In this first episode we get to grips with the equipment before Karen explains the meaning of 'ova' at the end of Slavic surnames, which it turns out literally means 'belonging to a woman's father or husband' gulp! We discuss minimalist living and how the burning of one's personal items ignites the caveman (or woman) in all of us, and how my life in Ireland as a kid and Karen's childhood in Slovakia were both slightly behind the rest of Europe during their respective decades. 25 Jan 2024 | S1 EP35: Janelle Niles | 00:55:42
This week we welcome Comedian Janelle Niles who tells us about her extraordinary journey from training to be a massage therapist during a pandemic, to becoming a comedy powerhouse in the indigenous comedy circuit in Canada. We chat about the new bounty of indigenous stories in modern television and film and how those voices need to be heard after being silenced for so long. We also discuss why celebrities might not be the best people to run an actual country and how renaming problematic terms by people who are unaffected by the cause they are championing might not always be a positive advancement. Janelle sprinkles love on My Name is Earl and Richard Jennings while pouring disdain over 'The Idol', the ill-advised reality TV show featuring The Weeknd. 01 Feb 2024 | S2 EP1: Paul Foot | 00:42:46
This week's guest is the incredibly funny comedian Paul Foot, who took time out of his schedule to come and chat about such things as his love for Angela Lansbury and Premier Inn, his disdain for obvious tropes in modern whodunnits and why the Heinz's monopoly of the baked beans market could well be flannel. Paul explains why the idea of an earth-orbiting Judy Murray brings him comfort and how he summons the ghost of Keith Chegwin whenever he misplaces important items. Paul also comes up with the best ever answer to what TV show might be top of the ratings in the year 2050, so good in fact, that I think it might just get commissioned. 08 Feb 2024 | S2 EP2: Derren Brown | 00:59:38
Today we welcome the incredible Derren Brown to the pod. Hot from his West End Show 'Unbelievable', Derren fantasises about running his own cafe and how he has a favourite spatula. We then discuss how many Derren's there actually are and share nostalgic tales of shoplifting, most notably when Derren managed to set off the alarm in Harrods trying to steal a Luther Vandross Cassette. Due to his award winning Cha-Cha, I try to convince him to go on Strictly, while he explains why British crime dramas just don't cut it. I imply that magic is akin to thieving as he explains how false memory alters our perception of past events. Derren also lifts the lid on some classic episodes of 'Trick or Treat' and gives us his own perception of what it's like to be famous. And last but not least, tells us how he blanked Charlize Theron in L.A. Please Follow us on Social Media (links below): All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn. We share our love of Stacey Solomon's 'Sort Your Life Out' and get nostalgic about 1970s kids TV theme tunes. This week we welcome the comedy legend Sam Simmons to the pod. Sam introduces me to the hilarious 'David's Dead' moment from celebrity Big Brother 2016 and explains why he dislikes the term Dramedy. Although he loves acting and performing, Sam has decided that it might well be time to get a proper job, which is why he is now selling sausages at the Adelaide Fringe. 27 Mar 2024 | S2 EP8: Bernie Clifton | 00:48:06
Today on the pod we have the absolute legend that is Bernie Clifton. Fresh from releasing his autobiography 'Crackerjack to Vegas' Bernie chats about his failed attempts to become a plumber which in turn led him to join the RAF and fly to football matches in Cold War bombers. Bernie talks warmly about his comedy cohorts including Bob Monkhouse and Les Dawson, the latter urging him to become a prop comic, something Bernie is grateful for to this day. Learn how Oswald the Ostrich came into being and why Bernie once took him up in a microlight aircraft to appease a reporter from The Daily Mirror. Bernie is clearly touched to be referenced in an Inside No.9 episode and speaks fondly of all involved. He also spills the beans on the televisual debacle that was 'It's a Royal Knockout', along with behind the scenes anecdotes from his life in TV including the seminal kids TV Show 'Crackerjack'. This week my guest is the wonderful Swedish actor Per Lasson, who joined me on his day off from filming Season 3 of 'Tunna blå linjen' to chat about such varied subjects as uncomfortable age gaps, close bonds formed in the workplace, and why comedy and horror do not mix. We ponder why Scandinavian TV has soared in popularity in recent years and why the anglicisation of their titles are sometimes way off. Per also tells us about his new project 'Whiskey on the Rocks', an amazing true story about a Nuclear Russian submarine that ran aground in Sweden in 1981, and explains how he deals with his new found fame. We also have a wee chat about the sometimes problematic films that are screened on both planes and ferries and why A.I. might not be such a bad thing after all.Trigger warning: There is talk of suicide and various unsavoury subjects that some may find troubling. This week's guest is the multi-talented writer Giles Paley-Phillips who chats about his various projects, including his film company, writing career and his many podcasts. We find plenty of common ground along the way including the difficulty in finding time to read, writing to a soundtrack, and even being at the same Glastonbury Festival, although Giles was performing whilst I was a mere punter. We also discuss the annoyance of having to rely on social media whether we like it or not, and how influencers are gaining power over the commissioning of new TV projects. Giles shares his love for Columbo and his disdain for the resurgence of game shows, while I somehow raise the topics of MAFS and Naked Attraction yet again, but come on, how can I not? 25 Apr 2024 | S2 EP13: Dom Joly | 00:54:51
This week we welcome the beloved prankster, broadcaster and author Dom Joly to the podcast. I was lucky enough to talk to Dom backstage before one of his performances of 'The Conspiracy Tourist' whereby he opened up extensively about the trials and tribulations around his seminal Channel 4 show Trigger Happy TV, including scenes he couldn't air and having no control over the shoddy American remake. He also talks about how his follow up TV show 'This is Dom Joly' was painfully misunderstood, and how he really felt whilst participating in 'Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls'. Dom shares his love of Gogglebox and reality TV in general, and reveals how he'd still rather have made it as a musician than been successful in comedy. Dom now finds joy in travelling and writing his books, the latest of which deals with the growing problem of online Conspiracy theories including why some people think Finland might not actually exist. 07 May 2024 | S2 EP15: Alex Lowe (A.K.A. Clinton Baptiste) | 00:53:38
This week we welcome the brilliant actor and character comedian Alex Lowe to the podcast, recorded backstage at The Tyne Theatre during his tour of Clinton Baptiste's RollerGhoster. We talk about spooky stuff including ghosts and the unscrupulous tactics used by touring psychics, as well as the influences that informed the creation of Clinton Baptiste and his back story. Alex takes us on a journey through his career in television and radio, as well as how he first took to the West End stage aged just thirteen. Alex explains some of the more difficult situations he finds himself in whilst touring as Clinton, and how a changing audience can be problematic in the current era. We also discuss how the BBC can sometimes come across as patronising whilst trying to appear both inclusive and impartial, and why certain comedy references might not quite cut it with a younger crowd, especially if you name drop Judith Chalmers! Today on The podcast we have 'friend of the pod' Stefania Licari popping in for a zoom-chat all about her process in preparing for the Edinburgh Fringe. Stefania lifts the lid on the moment that changed her life forever and set her on course to being a comedian, and why she is planning to diverge away from medical comedy. This week we welcome the award winning comedian and author Rosie Holt to the podcast to chat about the election and how her Tory MP character might sway the outcome, by way of her new book 'Why we were right'. We discuss Rosie's similarities to Dua Lipa and why she'll never go on Strictly, plus why season 7 of Friends just isn't funny. Rosie explains how the X-files left her traumatised and why she cannot abide True Crime. We also discuss our most hideous jobs and admit to never having watched a single David Attenborough nature documentary. For an extra treat you'll also get to hear how I speak using A.I. This week we welcome director Paul Andrew Williams to the podcast to talk about his various projects including his brilliant spooky revenge crime thriller 'Bull', his four part Cary Grant Biopic 'Archie', as well as his upcoming dramatisation of the events surrounding the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Tube station in 2005. Paul explains how he struggles to pinpoint genres and finds it hard to watch his own early work. He also explains why he's drawn towards true stories and subjects that deal with the father/son dynamic. We also briefly discuss the failures of the UK postal system and how a family encounter with Steven Seagal left me feeling perplexed. Paul heaps praise onto Stephen Graham, who starred in his TV drama 'The Walk-in' and gives us a tease of his upcoming movie 'The Nest' starring Andrea Riseborough and Vanessa Redgrave. 10 Jul 2024 | S2 EP19: Mike Lukas | 00:58:09
This week we welcome U.S. Stand-up Mike Lukas to the podcast for a chat about all things comedy. We talk about his family's Lithuanian roots and the fear of Russian invasion that still haunts the community. Mike explains why people tend to fear change, regardless of the reasoning behind it and why the world might just need a reset. We chat way too much about hair, baldness and wigs before settling into a convo about Mike's Funny Muscle books and the mechanics of building a comedy set. We then tiptoe around the tricky topics of the day and discuss pushing back against our own programming when trying to adapt to new ways of thinking. Mike takes us through his journey as a stand-up, from sweaty clubs to performing at the Montreal Comedy Festival, which in turn led to him being booked on the Tonight Show and Conan, where he rubbed shoulders with celebrities such as Mr T. Subsequently Mike was booked to perform on the Second City comedy tour which ultimately landed in Las Vegas during 9/11, where he pranked the residents of his apartment complex along with his room-mate Jason Sudeikis. 17 Jul 2024 | S2 EP20: Anna-Jane Casey | 00:44:40
This week welcome our first proper West-Ender Anna-Jane Casey to the podcast. Currently starring as Sybil in 'Fawlty Towers-The Play', A.J. is at the top of her game, having starred in almost every musical you can think of. In fact, in turns out that she was in the very first West End show I ever saw. We discuss a myriad of subjects including Dean Gaffney's entrance into the jungle in 'I'm a Celeb', the PTSD of living through a global pandemic and why it might be time to bring back the word Pussy. A.J. loves a challenge, which is why she would quite like to be a contestant on 'SAS-Who Dares Wins' and have 'staff' spit in her face. She explains why John Cleese is a master of comedy before leaving us with something of a motto for life: 'if you've not cleaned your own u-bend you've lost the concept of life' All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn Except 'Last Man Standing' Lyrics by Aoife Nally, Music by Steve Otis Gunn Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly. This week we welcome comedian Yuriko Kotani to the podcast for a conversation about Japan, comedy, food and telly. I was lucky enough to be able to sit down during the busy Edinburgh Fringe for a podchat with Yuriko whereby we discussed performing comedy in a language other than your own, the magic that lies within Doraemon's fourth dimensional pocket and watching Japanese horror films at way too young an age. 11 Oct 2024 | S3 EP5: Terry Christian | 00:59:51
Today we welcome the man who was at the absolute centre of TV and celebrity culture in the 1990s. Long before TFI Friday and Britpop there was a Friday night Channel 4 show that drew an enormous viewership among the young, and that show was 'The Word', a television show helmed by Mr Terry Christian. Starting out in radio at the age of just 19, Terry has had a remarkable career that put him front and centre of the Manchester music scene, and later in a position to fight for those bands to gain exposure on Channel 4. It hasn't been easy and Terry pulls no punches in telling his story. Listen as he regales us with tales of hanging out with James Brown and Robin Williams, and the true story behind Oliver Reed's infamous drunken interview, as well as that legendary awkward Bill Hicks interaction. Although Ian is very much into his music, we find out how he really felt whilst appearing on 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks'. As a bonus to this Halloween episode you will also hear myself and the hilarious Clinton Baptiste talking about theatre ghosts backstage at The Tyne Theatre earlier this year, as well as an excerpt from my Edinburgh Show 'Steve Otis Gunn is Uncomfortable' where I regale the audience with my very own spooky story. Today on Television Times Comedian and Broadcaster Mark Dolan drops in for a long overdue chat, and yes we do talk briefly about his rather left field move into the choppy waters of political discourse, but mostly it's a chat about trendy glasses, crusty rolls and how 'Minder' was once filmed in his dad's pub. Mark explains how he tries to find life hacks wherever possible and how he dreams of opening a chain of cafes that sell three types of stew. We also discuss the joys of a cash and carry, Trump's unexpected election win, and how Mark once attempted a terrifying ski jump on Channel 4's 'The Jump' without being able to see a thing. Today we welcome Comedian and Cartoonist Paul Savage to the podcast for a chat about the ever changing life cycle of a comedy set, why putting too much pressure on an opening joke can ruin an act, and why comedians today might need to keep their day jobs. We discuss why actors and footballers aged differently in the '80s, how it was impossible to find a stumbled upon TV show after the fact before the internet, and why '90s sitcoms put so much emphasis on getting your shit together at an early age. This episode was recorded during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2024, where Paul kept mislaying his stapler! 20 Nov 2024 | S3 EP13: Harry Jun | 00:58:28
Today we welcome Korean-Australian comedian Harry Jun to the podcast to chat about the Scottish obsession with deep fat frying and why he'd love to be a contestant on Masterchef, Gen Z's appropriation of our childhood treasures via the rise of retro cool, the bizarre Australian Kids TV Show 'Round the Twist' and why some Americans speak funny, whereby Harry introduces me to the phrase vocal fry. Harry then explains why most Australian comedians tend to know one other and why practical effects in film and TV create an emotional connection that CGI cannot compete with. I should add that when Harry asks if Rob Lowe was in Parks and Rec? I reply 'I don't think so' which is of course wrong. How could I forget? Today we welcome the multi-talented comedian and director Stuart Laws to the podcast for a chat about his passion for flipping beer mats, the confines of a performer's comedic uniform, and why many stand-up comics tend to look alike. Stuart explains how he's adapted his onstage persona since being diagnosed with Autism and how that discovery has helped him understand the emotions that neurodiverse audience members may be suppressing during his own shows. Stuart also explains how he likes to nurture upcoming talent through his production company 'Turtle Canyon Media' while weighing up the pros and cons of judging your own successes against that of your peers. Today we welcome Australian actor Stephen Curry to the podcast for a chinwag about his varied career in TV and film, most notably his outstanding performance in 'Hounds of Love' and as King Yakan in Marvel's 'Thor: Love and Thunder'. We discuss the power of wigs and hair dye, rudeness dressed up as a well-meaning compliment, and why he doesn't quite understand the appeal of 'Taskmaster'. Stephen then explains what it's really like to shoot in remote locations, why some movies should only be watched once, and why he has only good things to say about his 'Spreadsheet' co-star Katherine Parkinson. He then reminds me of his turn as a camera-toting tourist in the Greg McLean Outback Horror film 'Rogue', before explaining how he somehow managed to play three different characters in 'Neighbours' without anyone noticing. We end by squeezing in a few cheeky format questions while Stephen explains how he managed to secure a lifetime supply of potato chips. Find out which pop star jumped out of a wardrobe while Bobby was impersonating him, who's annoying catchphrase he helped to cultivate, and why he could never be a contestant on I'm a Celebrity'. Hear the real story of how Bobby was badly injured filming a BBC game show, why he hated appearing on 'Dancing on Ice', and which other comedian he is often mistaken for. 02 Jan 2025 | S3 EP21: TV Round Up of 2024 with Paul Critoph | 00:58:56
He's back yet again! Friend of the podcast Paul Critoph returns and attempts to review the TV of 2024, whilst I accept impromptu Christmas deliveries via my front door. Listen as we discuss Paul's role playing Santa at a secret undisclosed location, the ever changing face of John Mulaney, and divorcing reality from the art of 'Baby Reindeer'. Gasp as we both realise we know Shakin' Steven's drummer, while I admit to watching an entire scheduled evening of Saturday night light-entertainment. Paul then tries to convince me to watch Jilly Cooper's 'Rivals' while I explain the bizarre concept of the Stephen Mangan led 'Fortune Hotel'. We also rile against adverts infiltrating the streaming market, why Season 3 of 'The Bear' took the absolute piss, and why neither of us can abide Strictly. Today we welcome comedian, author and anaesthetist Ed Patrick to the podcast for a chat about his recent appearance on 'Have I Got News For You', the changing habits of watching telly, and why the idea of being on 'Traitors' makes him anxious. Ed explains how he launched his own podcast 'Comedians Surgery' after a late night gig in Oxford, and how that created a safe space for comedians to talk openly, which leads me to explain how I ended up having a vasectomy on my birthday in the middle of a pandemic. We also discuss the importance of sleep, the reason why Prince didn't have any clocks in his house, and the rather bizarre TV career of Greg James. 16 Jan 2025 | S3 EP23: Graham Fellows | 00:53:41
This week we welcome Graham Fellows, the man behind both Jilted John & John Shuttleworth, for a cheeky chinwag about his legendary career in music and television. Yamaha and Casio keyboards feature heavily in this chat, as does John's dog Kirsty. Throughout our conversation, Graham pokes fun while I try not to laugh, as we cover such meteoric subjects as; doorstep drinks deliveries in the 1970s, the possibility of John doing ASMR videos on TikTok, why podcasts should never be over-edited, and how a song lyric earned him an almost lifetime supply of Bounty bars. We chat about his appearances on 'Top of The Pops' as Jilted John, how that character was formed as a reaction to the punk singers of the time, and how after signing a publishing deal, he accidentally created John Shuttleworth on the same day. I explain how I nabbed a job selling Yamaha keyboards in Harrods, even though I couldn't play a note, while Graham divulges why his keyboards sometimes stop working on stage, leading to unplanned comic moments. We also cover his collaboration with Count Arthur, his appearances on the Leslie Grantham-helmed 'Paradise Club' and Jonathan Ross's Saturday Night Zoo, and why, as a kid, he would have loved to have hung out with The Monkees.
