12 Jan 20225. Breast Cancer Nutrition-Part 2 Survivorship00:44:34

Once treatment ends...the confusion begins!

Although the scientific studies are largely inconclusive regarding the best nutrition pathway to prevent breast cancer, there are some general things most health practitioners can agree upon.  In today's episode, I break down these ideas as they relate to nutrition specifically.

We'll discuss some of the factors that you should consider when trying to choose a nutrition protocol, the importance of eating a wide variety of plants, what is inflammation and how you can keep it under control, addressing the root cause of hormone imbalances, bolstering immunity and important nutrients for breast cancer patients.

Check out my blog for more information on my personal favorite foods to prevent recurrence.

19 Jan 20226. Interview with Stephanie Carson a Meditation & Breathwork teacher00:59:28

If you struggle with the sitting still and mental chatter part of meditation, you may really enjoy trying Breathwork. By focusing on a three-part (belly, chest, exhale) breath, you are able to get out of your head and move stuck energy.

In today's episode, I interview Stephanie Carson who is a Meditation and Breathwork teacher. She is also an intuitive healer, Reiki Practitioner and holds Cacao sessions. We discuss the basics of these modalities and how they may be of use to breast cancer patients during and after treatment. After working in the corporate/entertainment world for many years, Stephanie made a huge pivot after utilizing meditation in her own life and seeing the difference she felt.  She is excellent at making this type of work accessible to those who haven't been exposed to these particular forms of healing.  I can also attest to her incredibly warm and nurturing energy.

Stephanie books private and group sessions and can take clients from all over the world thanks to Zoom. The best way to reach her is on Instagram @stephaniecarson_ or by emailing her at stephanie@soulsanity.com. Click here to visit her website.  She also is offering to gift a free class through Unplug Meditation Studio (all breathwork classes are currently done virtually and she teaches on Tuesday evenings at 8pm PST) to anyone listening to the podcast who would like to try breathwork. Please contact her directly for details, subject to approval by Unplug Studio.

Other topics covered are estrogen dominance, how to determine if your hormones are out of balance and what you can do to naturally balance things if they are out of whack.

In today's episode, I am discussing why journaling may help you along on your cancer journey.  Whether you are currently in treatment or processing your experience through survivorship journaling is a fantastic self-care tool. Whether there is a trauma you want to address or not, journaling has numerous benefits and can be a really fun experience.

I cover some of the research-backed benefits, different ways to cultivate a journal practice and I even read an entry from my childhood journal that is pretty amusing, if I say so myself.

In today's episode, I interview three friends who were diagnosed with breast cancer. They also are all daughters of breast cancer survivors. Rhonda Eyzaguirre, PhD, Jennifer Dresser and Mari Guzman speak graciously and candidly about the roller coaster that is the cancer experience/survivorship---during a pandemic!

The experience of dealing with the diagnosis inspired them to write a book about it. Hope Among Us: Stories of Three Breast Cancer Survivors chronicles their journey, contains interviews with their mothers, spouses, and children, and includes resources for patients and survivors.

29 Jun 202218. Interview with Theresa Brown, RN Author of the book Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient01:12:04

In today's episode, I speak with the NY Times Best Selling author, Theresa Brown, RN.

In her new memoir,
HEALING: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient(Algonquin Books: April 12, 2022), Brown tells her intensely personal story and presents an honest – and rare – look at struggling with the illness while navigating the maze of American health care from the unique standpoint of both a patient and a practitioner.

Brown vividly chronicles her journey, from the mammogram appointment that would change her life to her diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. She writes about the small joys she finds amid her fears – riding her bike to radiation appointments, a hiking trip with her husband and kids, and the constancy of her dog. But despite years working as an oncology and hospice nurse, Brown is constantly surprised by the lack of compassion she experiences during her treatment.

20 Oct 202225. Interview with Lais Scort, Healing Through Music. 00:34:45

In today's episode, I interview the very special, Lais Scort.

In 2008, after breaking her neck in a pool dive Lais Scort had a
conversation with a spirit guide who gave her the option of
continuing her life on Earth or going back because it wouldn't be
easy. She decided to continue with her wholeness journey, and
even through quadriplegia, she trusted her path would be guided.

Lais is a sound priestess, singer, songwriter, independent artist, and producer based in Brazil. Her music lives somewhere in
between Alt-pop, Indie Rock, and Conscious Music.
She holds magic space for soul-led humans to behold their true
power and create in it through sound, music, kundalini yoga,
astrology and journeys in sisterhood and 1:1. She also co-creates
healing music to celebrate wholeness and transmute pain
independently and with clients.

As a survivor of spinal cord injury, she uplifts those that have been through insurmountable trials.
Lais believes songs are portals and sound can create a piece of
Heaven on Earth, healing those that need it most. Her inspiration
comes from ecstatic singing, automatic writing, dreams,
shamanic journeys, deep experiences, and soul searches. The
genre-bending music covers themes like resilience, grief, finding
who we are and our path, rebirths, faith, and spiritual connection
in this human experience.
Healing is important and music heals.

Listen to her incredible story and at the end of the episode, Lais takes you through a mini-sound healing journey of your own!

12 Jan 202329. Interview with Nicole and Megan Michelena, Healing with Psilocybin01:05:15

DISCLAIMER: This podcast is intended for informational purposes only and does not claim to be medical or mental health advice.  Please discuss any health matters with your medical team and follow all laws. The host and guests of this podcast do not condone illegal activity.

In 2020, Portland, OR passed ballot measure 109 which gives Oregon Health Authority the job of overseeing magic mushroom consumption.

In the premiere episode of season two, I'm talking with my guests about how microdosing with psilocybin (aka magic mushrooms) can be used to rewire the brain.

After experiencing profound healing through psychedelic treatment, sisters Megan and Nicole Michelena founded Zenchronicity, a microdose mentorship program that supports healing with psilocybin. Megan and Nicole are Microdosing Institute certified mental health experts specializing in trauma healing through plant medicine. Megan is also a certified holistic nutritionist, health coach, and both are trauma-informed yoga teachers and experts in psychedelic medicine. Nicole has studied plant medicine and the benefits it has in helping individuals heal emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

The sisters are also the hosts of the podcast, Zenchronicity.

25 Jan 202330. Fasting & Breast Cancer00:30:25

In today's episode, I discuss how participating in a fasting protocol can be beneficial to breast cancer patients.

Research has shown very promising results regarding using fasting to lower your risk of breast cancer recurrence and also to enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy treatments.

I have utilized fasting in my life for decades for various reasons and have seen many benefits.

Topics covered in this episode:
1.  What is IF (intermittent fasting)? How do you do it?

2. Why is fasting good to prevent breast cancer from coming back?

3.  How can fasting increase the benefits of chemotherapy treatment and reduce side effects?

4. Who shouldn't fast?

5. Common questions and concerns when starting a fasting protocol

6. How to make fasting easier

7. Why women who don't tolerate Tamoxifen should consider IF

8. My experimentation with fasting over the last 25 years

Fasting has been studied as a potential way to improve chemotherapy outcomes. Short-term fasting has been observed to increase chemotherapy sensitivity in some cancer cells, enhance cancer cell death, and reduce chemotherapy-induced side effects. Fasting also increases the levels of certain hormones such as growth hormone, which may be beneficial for chemotherapy efficacy. In addition, fasting may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which are important factors in the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Finally, fasting may reset the body’s metabolism, allowing it to better utilize chemotherapy drugs.

As always, thank you for listening!

Please subscribe to the podcast, and leave a positive review.  It really helps get this information to the people who need and want it. Plus, I would be so grateful.

22 Feb 202332. Dating After Breast Cancer00:38:06

Dating after breast cancer can be a daunting experience, especially if you are struggling with feeling confident in your body and worried about how you will be accepted by a potential partner.

In today's episode, I break down what I have learned about dating in a post-pandemic world in a post-mastectomy body.

A few topics I cover:

-How apps can take some of the awkwardness out of telling a new potential partner about your cancer history

-The advantages and disadvantages of meeting new people on the apps vs. in real life

-How to know when you "are ready to get back out there"

-The self-care tools I used to help boost my confidence

-The benefits of sharing your experience and supporting yourself with single friends

...some of the most surprising moments I've had, some of the sweetest moments I've had, and one of the lowest moments I had regarding dealing with other people's reactions to my history as a breast cancer survivor.

At the end of the day, dating TRULY can be FUN...even as a cancer survivor.  Being more vigilant about enforcing my boundaries and also being more open, honest, and direct about how to handle my post-cancer body with care has actually been incredibly empowering.  I hope the same for you too!
