Tara shares her yoga story from growing up in the woods of Illinois with straight-edge hippy parents, to wanting to get as far away from that as possible, aka New York City, to finding her way back to a life of helping herself and others with yoga, wellbeing, and self care.

We hear from caller Veronika in India, who loves the practice of yoga for herself, but was struggling to find a yoga community that felt comfortable for her. Veronika recently completed an online training with Strala Yoga, has empowered herself to lead yoga and feel more confident and connected in creating community. She was even asked recently to teach classes at a studio nearby and is excited about sharing her practice.

23 Feb 2022How to Gain Confidence in Yourself (and how you are in the world)00:48:47

When I first started to get interviewed about my books and yoga, a lot of questions I received were about confidence. It's an interesting topic with loads of complexity, but gaining it doesn't need to be scary. It can be a fun and rewarding journey.

When I would first hear those questions, I didn't really know how to answer. It was like trying to un-bake a cake. How did you get so confident to do what you do, to create something that wasn't there, to do something differently.

The answer, for me, is in knowing my process. I want to use my energy in this life for good. I feel a pull to practice, improve, take care of myself, get better, get more practice, and help as much as possible, however I can. Sustainable confidence is a result of learning and doing tumbled together forever, with your unique, special, and amazing point of view.

No one else will every be you. Being yourself is a good start. Next comes the doing. When you are pulled into the process of doing and getting better at what you do consistently, confidence simply becomes you. There is no short cut, but there is a clear process that will eliminate fear and confusion and keep the imposter syndrome at bay. You deserve to feel better and be confident in you.

I'm so thrilled to share this conversation with my friend Kathryn Judge about her new book Direct, The Rise of the Middleman Economy and the Power of going to the Source. I met Kate in our downtown NYC studio about 10 years ago. Her calm presence and practice effected everyone so positively. I knew she was a whip-smart law professor, but I was so drawn into how she genuinely cared about people in class. Her sense of community and compassion and self care seemed effortless and working for her. Her wellbeing radiates. I feel so lucky to know her, be moms at the same time, and catch up about all the life stuff. Her book Direct reminds me of Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food. She makes it easy for everyday people to understand how global supply chain and middlemen impact every aspect of our lives, and even more empowering, she provides simple principles we all can apply in our daily lives to feel better and do better. Direct is truly yoga, off the mat and in real life.


Kathryn is the Harvey J. Goldschmid Professor of Law at Columbia Law School. Her research on financial markets and regulation has been published in top law journals and won accolades from academic peers and industry. She served as a clerk for Judge Richard Posner and Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. She is a graduate of Stanford Law School and Wesleyan University. She lives with her husband and their two daughters in New York City.

Looking at how we move, in our yoga or any other movement practice, is a great opportunity to shift how we go through challenge. We can accomplish so much more when we move in alignment with ourselves in every moment. The biggest challenge can be looking at ourselves enough, to see and decide to change how we do what we do. We can shift from struggling with what's not working, to finding a better way.

Recently our home was broken into, and I was home alone. I'm very lucky and grateful I'm ok and my family and home are ok. I'm sharing this here because a few practices, specifically awareness practices, had a hand in keeping me safe and calm during the invasion, and healthy in my recovery from the event.

Zibby's debut novel Blank is so fun to read, and I had a blast reading it, but it also has a massively cool message, like The Emperor's New Clothes cool. The main character, celebrated author, Pippa Jones has a wild idea to publish a book with nothing in it, partly because her original idea was taken by another author and her deadline was fast approaching, and partly because she wants to point out some of the down and dirty sides of the publishing industry and how readers are fed all the books they think they are choosing. Zibby is a huge champion of authors, and encourager of readers, and a rebel with a good cause.
