20 Feb 2020Chapter 71 Tao Te Ching – Are You Sick of Being Sick?00:49:17

In the 71st Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu describes the state of “not knowing”. A very good discussion of how having a “not knowing” mind toward all things, starting with our recovery, leaves room for the right answers to show themselves.

As our motivation changes from fear to compassion, our actions start changing from the inside out. In verse 8 of the Tao Te Ching, we find the actions we should begin to see during this process.

Great discussion of verse 8 of the Tao Te Ching and how it relates to our recovery!

30 Jun 2022Wen-Tzu – Verse 3 – How to Follow the Way!00:50:57

Today we discussed the third verse of the Wen-Tzu. We also discussed verses 21 and 39 of the Tao Te Ching. A lot of discussion of "How to" today means a lot of discussion about Acceptance. We also discussed how we could look at others' beliefs as if we were all speaking our own language, not right or wrong, not superior or inferior.

19 Nov 2021Enjoying the Holidays Sober!00:45:14

In this episode, we discussed the tools we use to enjoy the holidays sober. For many, this is the first holiday season sober. Can we go to functions? How do we deal with the contrary family member that always pushes our buttons? This was an excellent discussion!

Some of the tools discussed;

  1. Attend as many AA meetings as possible AND participate.
  2. Get a Sponsor and work the steps.
  3. When tempted, think the drink through and remind yourself WHY you stopped.
  4. Practice Gratitude first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
  5. Take care of your body, eat right, sleep right, exercise, and drink lots of water.
  6. Watch videos about the devastating effects of alcohol and listen to podcasts focused on sobriety.
  7. Reach out to others in need with a text, email, voice message.
  8. Get a sobriety app to track your days sober and dollars saved.
  9. Embrace the cold, shut off the hot water.
  10. Become an active part of a community - online or in person - and remember that the difference between Wellness and Illness is WE, not I.
  11. Have a way out – Always have a way to leave if you start feeling uncomfortable.
  12. Accountability – Bring a sober friend or check-in before and after the event.
  13. Keep a cup in your hand.
  14. Lower your expectations of everyone at the event.
  15. Don’t take anyone's actions personally.
  16. You may even tell them you will not be drinking tonight and for sure ask them to put you on a pot of coffee.
  17. If you start getting antsy,  start cleaning up, play with the kids, or go for a walk.
  18. Have a time limit for how long you are staying.
  19. It is time to leave when I hear the same story for a second time and at a higher decibel.
  20. Prepare for the event – take a nap, have a snack, go to an online meeting – be emotionally, spiritually, and physically ready, or reconsider attending.
  21. HALT – Take action when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired.
  22. Take advantage of one or more of the many service opportunities during the holidays.
  23. Attend an online meeting at any moment before, during, or after the event and pray for each square until the craving passes.

In this episode, Zach E. and Buddy C. discuss Chapter 55 of the Tao Te Ching. A good discussion of how “the need to know” permeates all areas of life. Also discussed are the similarities between Christianity and Buddhist Zen and the need to know in both approaches to spirituality.

13 Feb 2024Tao Te Ching Verse 36 – How Do We Allow?00:47:16

If you want to shrink something, you must first allow it to expand.

If you want to get rid of something, you must first allow it to flourish.

If you want to take something, you must first allow it to be given.

This is called the subtle perception of the way things are.

The soft overcomes the hard.

The slow overcomes the fast.

Let your workings remain a mystery.

Just show people the results.

— Stephen Mitchell, Tao Te Ching , Verse 36

27 May 2023Don M’s Recovery Story – Creativity!00:59:46

“Creativity is a bottomless well. It doesn’t run dry, It just needs to be fallow for a time. Pushing it was not the answer. The answer was letting go of it, just releasing it, and letting it happen.” Don M.

I hope you enjoy Don's story!

We are taking a break from the weekly group meeting and interviewing some past participants, Facebook group members, and a few authors. If your recovery has been enhanced by Taoist text, don't hesitate to contact us and share your experience!

Here are some of the questions we tackle;

1. Background; Where from, vocation, family, a picture of your life then and now.

2. Has your view of the H.P. changed since you started your recovery journey? How similar is your present H.P. to the one you grew up with?

3. Why does the Tao speak to you? How do you see your relationship with the Tao? What is the Tao to you?

4. Do you have a favorite Tao verse or quote?

5. Do you recommend any Tao podcasts other than this one?

6. Any Tao-related books or devotionals?

28 Jul 2022Wen-Tzu – Verse 6 – Taoist Guidance00:58:58

Sages do not replace the celestial with the human. Outwardly they evolve along with things, yet inwardly they do not lose their true state. So those who realize the Way return to clear tranquility. Those who find out about things end up without contrivance. They nurture the intelligence by calmness, unify the spirit by abstraction, and take to the gate of nothingness.

Do you want to stop drinking? Have you ever listened to sobriety podcasts? Does alcoholism or addiction run in your family? Have you tried Alcoholics Anonymous or the 12 Steps of AA? Tao Te Ching quotes, and the teachings of Lao Tzu give an excellent description of a working Higher Power. Are you considering how to get sober? Are you seriously thinking about sobriety for the first time being alcohol is controlling your life as never before?

01 Nov 2023Tao Te Ching Verse 17 – The Spiral Downward!00:51:05

To know Tao alone, without a trace of your own existence, is the highest. Next comes loving and praising it, then fearing it, then despising it.
— Jonathan Star, Tao Te Ching, The Definitive Edition, Verse 17

In all interactions, we are one of these four phases. This is an excellent discussion of self-government and how verse 17 of the Tao Te Ching relates to our recovery experience.

10 Dec 2021Chuang Tzu - Kengs Disciple Part 2 – Forgetting What I Know!00:55:54

Is sobriety like everything else? Get educated, work hard, and if you don’t get it at first, double down and work even harder? Or is sobriety the opposite? Instead, are we to place our effort in helping others as a way of helping ourselves. Is sobriety all about unlearning? About forgetting what I think I know?

20 Mar 2022Verse 76 of the Tao Te Ching – How to Stay Flexible in Life!00:46:00

Excellent discussion! This verse gives us instructions on how to discern life and death in everyday situations. The challenge is not only to remain flexible when life is difficult but also to allow flexibility in success.

04 Jul 2019Chapter 48 Tao Te Ching – Living by Decreasing!00:58:16

In the 48th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu reminds us that our interference in life is more of a hindrance than a help. Our peace and joy is found within; not in the things we attain or the people we perfectly arrange and orchestrate around us.

12 Oct 2018Chapter 3 Tao Te Ching – Selfless Action Causes Everything to Fall into Place!00:53:57

In the 3rd Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu describes a life of peace and joy begins with inner emptiness, not external fullness. It is perfectly ok to have things – not ok for things to have you or you determine your value by others’ opinions and achievements. It is selfless action that causes everything to fall into place.

30 Jan 2020Chapter 69 Tao Te Ching – Living Without Enemies!00:42:05

In the 69th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu explains that the idea of having an enemy is an illusion. We block the salvation we are looking for when we treat others as enemies. When I attack, I am always, always, always, attacking myself – no exceptions! We also referenced “The Tao of Inner Peace” by Diane Dreher.

01 Nov 2018Chapter 18 Tao Te Ching - Substitutes for Powerlessness and being right with the Tao!00:46:44

In the 18th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu explains that you can live from your heart, viewing virtue as an individual responsibility that you adhere to without a statue or edict telling you. We discussed Chapter 18 of the Tao Te Ching. Lots of good content about the slippery slope of self and the substitutes we create when we do not turn our will and life over to God's care.

In the 68th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu described Tao on a graduate level – learning how to compete in a world of competitors - without competing! How to live a way of non-resistance in every circumstance of life. Great discussion on our response when life threating situations challenge our sanity and sobriety.

09 Sep 2021Verse 11 Tao Te Ching Discussion with Sensei Elliston! Emptiness Part 100:52:54

Sensei Michael Elliston shares his thoughts on the 10th verse of the Tao Te Ching from a Zen perspective. From the text, this became a conversation about emptiness.  Sensei gives us a thorough explanation of how the ancient masters of Zen Buddhism taught emptiness. Next week, our story about seeking nothingness(emptiness) gives us Chaung Tzu’s view on emptiness, diving into the spiritual applications in daily life.

28 Apr 2023Izzy's Recovery Story – My Addiction was Masking the Real Problem!00:53:35

Izzy approaches the Higher Power from a slightly different perspective from a strong Orthodox Jewish heritage. I hope you enjoy Izzy's story!

We are taking a break from the weekly group meeting and interviewing some past participants, Facebook group members, and a few authors. If your recovery has been enhanced by Taoist text, don't hesitate to contact us and share your experience!

Here are some of the questions we tackle;

09 May 2019Chapter 41 Tao Te Ching – We are one thought removed from Peace and Joy!00:57:37

In the 41st Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu reminds us of the paradoxical nature of truth. When we smirk at an answer, that is not self-serving, that answer probably needs to be reconsidered. A small shift can mean the difference between peace and joy or frustration and angst.

12 Oct 2018Chapter 1 Tao Te Ching – The Way of Not Knowing!00:51:15

In the 1st Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu shows us the way of the Tao is a way of “not knowing.” Most of us are taught growing up that the first thing we do is label – good or bad, etc. We were taught to identify and structure every situation, person, place, or thought so we could apply the highest level of perceived control. The way of the Tao is the opposite. Letting ourselves not know, not label or name, be powerless.

The title says it all. Another view of the Wu Wei from a slightly different angle. How do we not interfere, allow, stay in balance, be at rest, be human, be still, and enjoy our original nature? This particular story also brought meditation and stillness in as a solution.

I want to thank Craig M. for filling in as host. A listener, Devin P, requested this story, which was close to the end of the book, so we moved it up. After an excellent discussion, we concluded that everything we have is a gift to be given away. Only through viewing all as a gift do we have the possibility of depending on our Higher Power rather than our limited abilities. Thank you, Devin P! I hope you enjoy it!

23 Apr 2021Chuang Tzu – Owl and Phoenix – The Illusion of Fear!00:55:50

At first, I thought this story was more about the deception that desire brings into our lives. After our discussion, I believe this story is more about fear and how fears cause us to take actions that are as much an illusion as the fear itself. We also discussed food and applying the program to some of our lesser handicaps.

04 Apr 2022Verse 75 of the Tao Te Ching – Playing God Does Not Work!00:41:22

This story reminds us of how playing God does not work; We either demand too much or provide too much. Whenever we look to our understanding for the solution, we are looking in the wrong direction. The solutions for each of us come from within.

18 Oct 2018Chapter 16 Tao Te Ching Part 2 – Everything in Life is Cyclical!00:49:33

This is Part 2 of our discussion of Chapter 16 of the Tao Te Ching. Lao Tzu explained how all of life is in a no-life, life, no-life cycle; every relationship, job, even every care has this element. If we do not let go of something that is dying we cannot embrace what is being birthed.

In the SRC we have a number of live online recovery meetings every week on a number of different topics led by a wide mix of addicts and alcoholics in recovery. 16 May 2019Chapter 42 Tao Te Ching – It is Great to be a Loser!00:56:27

In the 42nd Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu reminds us of one of the foundational teachings of the Tao; violence in any form begets violence – in relationships, business, life, etc. By the same token, love begets love – in relationships, business, life, etc. We discuss how to find that balance and how loss of attachments many times is the real path of gain.

12 Oct 2018Chapter 6 Tao Te Ching – Learning to Respond!00:50:53

In the 6th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu shows us our part in life is so much different than we may think. We learn that our job is to “listen for the echo.” Can we allow the noise to be removed from our lives? Can we let go of our agenda long enough to hear our real, peace-giving agenda?

In this episode, we start our study of Chuang Tzu. We discuss the first chapter of the book entitled, “The Way of Chuang Tzu” by Thomas Merton. A good discussion of the potential of love in everyone, when we fulfill the commands of our true nature, rather than those of our ego-self.

20 Dec 2018Chapter 24 Tao Te Ching - Learning to accept compliments without pride or ego using gratitude!00:52:32

In the 24th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu discusses how the natural flow of the Tao operates: It asks nothing of you as it provides everyone with unlimited supplies of food, air, water, sunshine, land, and beauty. It is always creating for the benefit of all, and it has no need for prideful boasting or demanding something in return. The journey of your life will change when you emphasize gratitude for all that you are, all that you accomplish, and all that you receive. – Wayne Dyer

In this episode, our discussion starts with Chuang Tzu’s, The Useless Tree, and moves to  Shel Silverstein's, The Giving Tree. 25 Apr 2019Chapter 39 Tao Te Ching – Real Humility!00:57:39

In the 39th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu shows us how we are all connected. Being we are all connected and part of a greater whole; when I hurt you, I hurt me. When I help you, I help me. When I have a success, I never get there alone. I never have to go through a disappointment alone either. Through appreciating, acknowledging, and helping those around me, I am helped too!

14 Apr 2023Paul's Recovery Story – Gratitude!00:44:58

Paul’s story is unique to most in our group. Paul has gotten sober without practicing A.A., without a sponsor, or attending face to face meetings. As of this recording, Paul has been sober over 13 years. I hope you enjoy Paul’s story!

We are taking a break from the weekly group meeting and interviewing some past participants, Facebook group members, and a few authors. If your recovery has been enhanced by Taoist text, don't hesitate to contact us and share your experience!

Here are some of the questions we tackle;

1. Background; Where from, vocation, family, a picture of your life then and now.

2. Has your view of the HP changed since you started your recovery journey? How similar is your present HP to the one you grew up with?

3. Why does the Tao speak to you? How do you see your relationship with the Tao? What is the Tao to you?

4. Do you have a favorite Tao verse or quote?

5. Do you recommend any Tao podcasts other than this one?

6. Any Tao-related books or devotionals?

16 Jan 2020Chapter 67 Tao Te Ching – Love Is Your Greatest Defense!00:55:20

In the 67th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu shows us that love is the dominant force in the universe. We discuss how our Higher Power is love, substituting love for Higher Power in the 12 steps and how love is our greatest protector.

17 Jun 2022Wen-Tzu – Verse 1 – A Description of a Higher Power00:51:16

Today we discussed the first verse of the Wen-Tzu, which works very well with the first verse of the Tao Te Ching. A good discussion of how we see God, acceptance, providence, and how Love works in our life.

30 Apr 2020Chapter 79 Tao Te Ching – Resentments – Seeking a Way to Give!00:51:29

In the 79th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu describes how the Tao is on the side of those that seek a way to give rather than to get. A good discussion on dealing with lingering resentments that plague anyone that does not take the action of “returning injury with kindness” in any altercation, especially the small ones with those we are the closest.
