Today's guest Anika Rashaun is a professional matchmaker who says there is no science in the art of love and matchmaking. Plenty of people know they want to be in a relationship but far too few of us know what we actually want in a partner and what kind of relationship we want. That's why I love what Anika does. Her work with her clients forces people to get really clear on what they want, what they don't want, and what their non-negotiables are. In this episode, she and I talk about the qualities that matchmakers consider when searching for potential partners and how she figures out if two people are a good match for each other. We also talk about the many ways that dating has changed in the past 10 years and specifically how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting romantic relationships. 14 Nov 2021 | 07 Music That Gets You in the Mood with ASTON and Pace Randolph | 01:25:30
Music has the power to elicit such strong emotions in us. It gives us a vocabulary and helps us figure out who we are, what we want, and how we express what we want from ourselves and from our partners. Today, I have two amazing guests, singers and songwriters ASTON and Pace Randolph, who know a thing or two about how music and lyrics can change our mindset. In this episode, ASTON, Pace, and I discuss what exactly it is about music that appeals to the senses and sensuality. We also talk about how music acts as an education and a conversational starter -- and how recently, through music, I have been able to connect with many parts of myself that turn me on. When it comes to music that gets us in the mood, it all boils down to context rather than content and sometimes it's okay to love music simply for how it makes you feel. Pace Randolph is a singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. His single Push You Further won the 'Best Song' and 'Best Music Video' categories in the Pivot Film Festival, which features 200 people singing to the chorus through compiled duets from TikTok where he has amassed a large following and millions of views. His single Walking in Pieces has been played on Ash London Live in Australia and WEEFF Radio in the Netherlands. Besides making music, he also hosts his podcast Embracing Imperfect. Listen in to find out which parts of WAP we like and dislike, what's on Gabriela's The Pussy Playlist, and how is music pushing the conversation about sexuality. ASTON and Pace even share some of the songs that turn them on and so many other great tidbits, so I hope this conversation expands your thinking about the role of music in your sexual relationship -- with yourself or with a partner. 09 Jan 2022 | 15 Self-worth Life Lessons from the Good Stripper with Marci Warhaft | 01:00:45
Today's episode connected so many dots for me. Through her unbelievably challenging life experiences, Marci Warhaft has managed to reclaim herself and her life in the most unexpected ways. From a young age, Marci related her self-worth to her body image and she developed disordered eating habits that wreaked havoc on her physical and mental health. Once she came to relate her eating habits to her self-worth, she began to reassess the root causes of her unhappiness. I love that she regularly asks herself: is it enough for me? Now she is a body image advocate. In this episode, Marci and I discuss when we should reassess the important relationships in our lives and how she broke out of the cycle of self-loathing. We also talk about ways to cultivate self-confidence and rediscover your self-worth. Listen in as Marci and I examine when to stay and when to go, the root cause of the fear of being alone, and how to cope with that fear. 26 Dec 2021 | 13 How to Enhance or Start Your Masturbation Practice with Paloma De La Hoz | 00:44:57
One of the most frequently asked questions that I have gotten over the past few years — from women specifically — is how to masturbate. Today we're talking about the how, when, and why of it all with Paloma "Moma" De La Hoz. Paloma is a psychologist and coach who helps men and women explore how to connect to their bodies, emotions, and desires — both in and out of the bedroom. It took me a long time to find the value and pleasure in masturbating, and I know I'm not alone. As we come into our sexuality in adulthood, many of us need to go through a sort of retraining, as so often in childhood we're taught to not even touch our own genitals. In this episode, Paloma and I talk about the cultural scripts that play a role in our ignorance and the work we have to put in to deconstruct those scripts in order to rebuild a healthy framework for self-love. We also talk about tips for setting the mood for masturbation and the five secrets for a great orgasm. Paloma “MoMa” De La Hoz is a certified psychologist and relationship therapist who decided to devote her skills toward being a sex and love coach. She helps both men and women to reconnect with their sexuality, develop awareness, and transform their sex life consciously in order to develop healthy and deeply fulfilling relationships. Her School of Sexual Healing is an 8-week transformational program designed to help women take ownership of their pleasure. Listen in to find out how to masturbate, what meditation has to do with masturbation, and the ethics of masturbating when you're in a committed relationship. 28 Nov 2021 | 09 Better Sex Communication with Pejman Hoviatdoost | 01:09:52
We have had many people asking us how to have the sort of difficult conversations around sex that we have been highlighting on the show, so today we're talking with Pejman Hoviatdoost about better sex communication. Pejman is a clinical psychologist whose job revolves around people having successful conversations with each other -- both about sex and about pretty much anything else you can think of. Pejman and I agree that communication is the beginning of any sexual relationship, that better sex starts with better communication, and that better communication starts with yourself. So he and I talk about why it is so important not to make assumptions when speaking with your partner about sensitive subjects and the crucial difference between what we mean and what we say. We also talk about why self-awareness is so key to having healthy conversations with your loved ones and what we can do to cultivate our sense of self-awareness. Listen in as we discuss the disconnect between looking sexually provocative for someone else and having ownership of your sexuality and what to do if you've talked to your partner about sex and nothing changes. When was the last time you really explored your body? Today's guest Jamilla Deville joins me in this episode to talk about our sexuality and how people interact with others and themselves through the wonderful art of dance. Jamilla was already a dancer and an aerialist when she discovered pole dancing and fell in love with the performance aspect. She opened her own pole studio in 2003 and never looked back. She and I talk about the unglamorous side of pole dancing, taboos associated with the art form, and the value of reinforcing adult playtime. 02 Jan 2022 | 14 The Ultimate Trauma Busting Toolbox with Dr. James Pennebaker | 00:56:56
It is an incredible honor that, in today's episode, I get to interview one of my heroes. Dr. James Pennebaker has been a part of my life without knowing it for many years now, as his work has influenced my life as well as the work that we do at the fertility clinic. Dr. Pennebaker trained as a social psychologist with an interest in social behavior and groups. He has authored 12 books and over 300 scientific articles and, most notably, has pioneered research in the field of expressive writing as a coping method for dealing with the trauma of unspoken events. His more recent work has been on equally fascinating topics from machine learning to natural languaging. In this episode, he and I talk about everything you need to know about how to apply the incredibly transformative tool of expressive writing to your own life. I love that he advises that we should all be our own scientists and figure out what works best for us. We also talk about the many ways that traumatic sexual experiences affect future health and how Dr. Pennebaker utilises his own research. Listen in to learn how much time should pass between the trauma and the writing about the trauma so that the exercise is helpful rather than hurtful and what Dr. Pennebaker means when he says the population has gotten stupider during the COVID-19 pandemic. 07 Nov 2021 | 06 High or Low? Differences in Libido with Michaela Josephson | 01:02:31
Today's guest is the fabulous Michaela Josephson, a psychologist and sex therapist who focuses on helping couples navigate relationships. In this episode, we discuss ways for partners to deal with differences in libido in a relationship and still feel close and connected through potential discrepancies in desire. Michaela asserts that no couple is beyond hope because there are many reasons why sex drive differences may occur in relationships and also many ways to address differences in libido. She also cautions that, while sex is only 15-20% of a relationship, without a healthy sex life the negative ripple effect of a challenge in this area can consume up to 70% of the joy in a relationship. So in this episode, we discuss the many ways you can negotiate your sex life with your partner and how to avoid self-judgment when figuring out how to name your desires. Listen in to this episode as we talk about how to candidly express your feelings in a way that is well received by your partner and why a little porn research might be just what the doctor ordered. 21 Nov 2021 | 08 The Tasty Pussy: Destigmatizing the Stigmatized with Moira Bradfield | 01:12:07
We are really going to get into it today and I wouldn't want to be joined by anyone but the unflappable Moira Bradfield. Moira is a specialist in the treatment of recurring vaginal infections and optimal vaginal and genital urinary health, so you know she won't steer us wrong as we dive headfirst into the world of the tasty pussy and destigmatizing the stigmatized. The taste, look, and smell of our sex organs is such a taboo topic that many of us have never dared to explore what's normal for us. Instead, all too often, we rely on learning what is "normal" for others. Do you know what you taste, look, and smell like on a normal day? Does your partner? In the beautiful and messy world of sex, we are always interacting with other peoples' microbes and that can play a role in our genital hygiene. But it's so important for us to get comfortable with what is normal for us because when our vaginal health suffers, so does our experience of pleasure and the enjoyment of sex. In this episode, Moira and I talk about the idea of "normal" versus "common," the ill effects of going overboard on genital hygiene, and the complications that can arise when medical treatment is not being offered to partners who are cross-contaminating each other. Listen in to learn all about how to safely monitor your genital health, how to choose a good lubricant, and how to have an open and honest conversation with your partner about sexual health. Today's guests are four fantastic women ranging from the age of 24 to 74 that join me in talking about what women think is sexy. Natasha Larcos, Jonine Lee Gabay, Melinda Hird, and Evelyn Lundstrom all have different takes on what is sexy. Some of the factors are internal while others are external. One woman likes loose pants on a man. One woman really likes confidence. Each of us agrees that demanding respect for yourself is the first step to being appreciated in your relationships. In this episode, we discuss how relationship red flags change as we age and how to begin to pinpoint what is sexy to you by pinpointing first what is not sexy to you. We also talk about the death of the chase, treating sexy as a mindset, and the art of flirtation. Natasha Larcos is the co-founder and creative director of the social media agency Universal Creatives. She volunteers at Ocean Uprise, a non-profit that empowers young people to help combat climate change through ocean conservation. She also co-hosts Officially Unofficial, a comedic dating podcast. Jonine Lee Gabay is a family/systemic constellations and somatic breathwork facilitator. Her vision is to create greater awareness of the link between unresolved trauma and grief to health and wellbeing. Melinda Hird is a personal brand photographer and video producer. She has covered event photography and video, author book trailers, brand photography, and video showreels for businesses and speakers. She loves engaging in meaningful conversations that can open up people's minds. Evelyn Lundstrom works as an executive presence and personal brand strategist, image coach, and corporate trainer. In her business, she helps in training those who wish to enter the personal brand image industry. She believes that feeling cherished and loved are key parts of feeling confident and sexy. Listen in to learn what is utterly unsexy, which one of the guests wants a guy that smells like a mountain stream, and how to know when a relationship has run its course. For our listeners, Evelyn Lundstrom is offering a complimentary 15-minute chat about any style issue and, for the month of January, she is offering 20% off of all personal consulting services. 29 Sep 2021 | 01 Sex in the Era of COVID with Dr. Leticia Kawano and Dr. Marcos Queiroga | 01:04:43
Welcome to the very first episode of TalkSex™ with Gabriela Rosa. For most of us all over the world, the Covid-19 pandemic has been relentless. I personally contracted Covid a couple of months ago, once the Delta variant started spreading in Australia. Vaccines were barely available in Australia at the time. Still, luckily, my family and I got through a harrowing two weeks of acute disease and an even longer (and challenging) post-infection period without needing hospitalization. In many ways, we have all been affected by this pandemic, whether we’ve had Covid-19 disease (yet) or not. Covid-19 has also forever influenced how we interact with each other, how we connect, and how we date. The uncertainty about this novel disease has brought up some big questions for reproductive health. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Leticia Kawano (MD, PhD) and Dr. Marcos Queiroga about the science behind the virus, the vaccine, and sex in the era of Covid. Dr. Marcos Queiroga (MD) is a skilled intensive care unit specialist doctor heading ICUs responsible for managing severe Covid-19 cases in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Dr. Leticia Kawano is a pulmonologist and clinical researcher at the University of Sao Paulo and HCor Research Institute. Her research deals with non-invasive support for acute respiratory failure, interstitial lung diseases, and Covid-19. Leticia is also a panel member of the Guideline Development Group of the WHO Living Guidelines on Treatments for Covid-19. The three of us discuss Covid-19 disease, answer questions about the Covid vaccine, its influences on reproductive health, and more. Erik also shares tips for how to build what he calls "irrational self-belief in your penis" along with some helpful things he learned in his career, like biohacks for a longer erection. 05 Dec 2021 | 10 Sober Sex with Kirsten Chalmers | 01:12:54
Today we explore the mystifying world of sex, drugs, and alcohol with Kirsten Chalmers. Kirsten is an Educational and Developmental Psychologist who, herself, has mostly stopped drinking alcohol over the past year. She and I discuss the ins and outs of sober sex. Are you living your best life? What would that look like? All too often we drink alcohol to fill a void in our lives, but we gloss over the idea that alcohol is not the only thing that will make us feel the way we want to feel. Change is hard. Lifestyle changes don't happen overnight, but as someone who drank from a young age and drank her whole life, Kirsten says she likely would have had better and more fulfilling relationships in her youth if she had been drinking less alcohol. She maintains that we need to first look inward to figure out what is missing in our lives and then to find things that fulfill us. She also opens up about navigating her new routines during the pandemic lockdowns -- and with a partner who is still drinking. Kirsten Chalmers is a registered psychologist by profession and has been working in private practice for over 10 years. She obtained her master’s degree in Educational and Developmental Psychology from the University of Melbourne. In 2020, Covid struck and she decided to take a break from her work and at the same time, a break from alcohol. After experiencing the benefits of an alcohol-free lifestyle, she got inspired to introduce people to mindful drinking and drinking alternatives. Hence, Point Zero Cellars was born. Point Zero Cellars is a Melbourne-based company importing fine, alcohol-free wines and superior spirits from around the world and distributing these throughout Australia. Drinks from their Sexy AF special collection promote being sexy and sober. Their current portfolio includes wines from South Africa’s finest wineries and spirits sourced from Canada. Listen in to learn how alcohol affects stress and mental health conditions, what happens to your body when you're not drinking, and ways to switch up your habits so you can start to drink less. Listeners can go to Point Zero Cellars and use the coupon code: ROSA10 for 10% off their purchase of alcohol-free drinks. This code is valid for 30 days after the episode is released on December 6th, 2021.
