Some of these stories will make you laugh...others may shock you. A note to parents: adult language is present in this podcast.

04 May 2021Episode 67: TGH 67: The Birth and Death of Golf in America00:27:24
Our latest episode of Golf From the Fringe: The Birth and Death of Golf In America: The Story of Harleston Green, is the true story of how the game of golf came to America in the mid-1700s. This story takes place over a 60 year period from 1739 to 1799 and tells the story of America's first golfers, first golf course and first golf club and how they semmingly, like the colony of Roanoke, disappeared in the middle of the night. I can't tell you how proud of how this show came together - in my book its an instant classic. Correction: During the podcast I state thaf the first known golfer in America was William Blacklock of Charleston (1739). As it turns out a set or golf clubs and golf balls were noted in the effects of Governor William Burnet on October 13, 1729 (a full decade earlier). Soundtrack: "The Rise" by MRTN "Touch" by Mattia Cupelli "Forgotten" by Whitesand "Hidden Past" by Kevin MacLeod

The story hinges on the designiation of the 1942 Hale America National Open, which was held in place of the canceled 1942 US Open. Some have fought for decades to declare this event a US Open while others have scoffed at the idea. Author Peter May recently published a new book, "The Open Question: Ben Hogan and Golf's Most Enduring Controversey" joins us on the show to argue the case for Ben Hogan winning his 5th US Open. Lake Zurich Golf Club is the club that time forgot. The story that unfolds over the next hour will amaze you, it will make you laugh and I believe in the end, it will make you want to join the little nine hole club of only 2600 yards and a mere 32 members. Stories like this are why I started this podcast. Things to listen for: Dead Bodies, Weird Rules, Marilyn Monroe, and the toughest question I have ever asked on a podcast and our guest's shocking answer!!! Did the members of Lake Zurich Golf Club actually eat the greens keeper's children??? That is not a joke! Listen and hear the whole story!!!

If that isnt good enough for you our guest John Fischer discusses his father, the last man to win a major championship using hickory shafted clubs, and for decades was responsible for setting the pins for the Masters. This episode is surely bound for the TGH Hall of Fame!!!

TalkinGolf History co-host Connor Lewis moved up a media grade recently when he appeared on Golf Channel alongside respected architect Jim Urbina in a short feature about the lost great club of the 20th century, The Lido. Built by the legendary C.B Macdonald and Seth Raynor why input from Tom Simpson and Alister Mackenzie, The Lido was widely regarded the equal of Pine Valley when it opened in 1914 but by 1942 it was gone. The course and its amazing has intrigued golfers for decades and with interest reignited by the Golf Channel piece last week now seemed a good time to flesh the story out further. This monthly podcast will cover every facet of the incredibly rich histroy of golf from players to architecture to clubs to rules to the implements we use to whack the ball around the field of play. And the best thing about it is that it's not only fascinating, it's entertaining, sometimes funny and always enjoyable. This is golf history like you've never heard it before and we hope you'll enjoy the journey as much we do. PS: One of the cornerstone ideas of this podcast is to have as much involvement from listeners as possible. We want your feedback - both good and bad - but more importantly we want your input. If you have questions you want answered or ideas for episodes don't be afraid to get in touch. A wonderful expansion on the DocuPod I recorded years ago by the title: "The Caucasian Clause." Peter May's study of the events that took place between 1896 and 1962 was thorough and tells the story, while not a happy one, of the creation of the PGA, the PGA Tour and the PGA Championship we know today.
