05 Feb 2022Ep. 123 - The excitement builds at Stonelands and East Donyland, as Saul and Lucy are beginning to see the signs of the garden stirring for the new season ahead - but there is still the potential for some cold, so stay wrapped up warm.00:31:58

We are now firmly in winter, and you might be thinking that Head Gardeners Saul Walker and Lucy Chamberlain are taking things easy on their respective estates. But as these latest episodes will show, the two are fervently working away as busily as ever. With jobs such as planting, pruning, clearing and renovating on the cards, Lucy and Saul are at no risk of getting cold during this chillier season. The gardening friends are also busy thinking of the year ahead, so expect plenty of discussions about the weather, biscuits, buying new equipment, mowing, spreadsheets vs. lists, (more biscuits), and what plans they have for their own private gardens.

Head Gardeners Lucy and Saul are starting to get excited - the new garden season is almost upon us, days are getting longer and early spring flowers, bulbs and blossom is starting to appear. They have lots to chat about as the work begins to focus towards the coming year from the benefits of storing your precious harvests to the very unseasonable need to mow your lawns in mid-winter. They also emphasise that although it may get cold out there gardeners are still working hard and what you wear and how you work is essential to prevent one's toes and nose from feeling the frost!

Saul reveals that the tell tale signs of spring are emerging in Devon, whereas Lucy still waits patiently for Essex to catch up on its floral displays. Forced bulbs, new purchases and a cunning plan to thwart mice damage all get the attention of Lucy and Saul this week, as Saul admits his sticker addiction to the masses and Lucy claims that Essex mice have definitely watched Mission Impossible. The duo also discuss the excitement that visiting new gardens can bring. Saul has already begun his 2022 road trip, whereas Lucy is still sitting on the starting grid. Spring, it seems, is definitely around the corner.

Storms Dudley, Eunice, Franklin and Gladys wreaked their havoc last week, and now gardens up and down the country are clearing up the resulting damage. Ouch! Mr Walker is out for the horticultural count with a bad back, so Lucy goes solo this week by giving you a guide of her kitchen garden. At 40x40ft she's packed a plethora of crops into this area (blueberries, raspberries, pears, apples, cherries, peaches, gages, rhubarb, asparagus - the list goes on and on) so in this episode she gives you an insight into what any respectful grow-your-owner would be doing on their spring plot. With the weather yoyo-ing, her thoughts are dominated by how her fruit flowers will deal with this chilly spell - only time will tell how her precious crops fare.

Have you ever thought of opening your garden for a charity fundraiser? That's exactly what's been on Lucy's mind for the past few months. But what does it take to get your own personal garden ready for the masses, and are you prepared for what folk might say about it? Thankfully, Lucy lives in a lovely village containing generous folk with a healthy appetite for tea, cake and Granny Ann's scones. If anyone dares to criticise those, they'd better be able to run fast...

09 Jul 2022Ep. 142 - July might be here, but Head Gardeners Lucy and Saul haven't really talked about how June has been in their gardens; Bindweed, Bio-fumigants and Meadows all feature in some gardening chit-chat.00:34:08

Long summer days, high temperatures and maximum sunlight are the hallmarks of a good summer (lets hope for a little rain though!). The Summer of 2022 is eagerly awaited by all the keen gardens up and down the UK as herbaceous borders, roses, veg gardens and meadows are awash with new plantings, flower and a general sense of abundance that only Summer can bring. So in this episode let the garden chit-chat begin as they Lucy brings stories of bindweed success, bio-fumigant experimentation and meadows that are both Poppy-less but none the less beautiful.

23 Jul 2022Ep. 143 - 'Scorchio'! Well you couldn't avoid the heat this week, but one of the Talking Heads pair had adapted herself by taking a Mediterranean holiday the week before, so Saul and Lucy take a look at how we can adapt our gardens to a warming world.00:34:16

Summer hit the UK (and a lot of Europe) square in the face this week, the heat of Monday and Tuesday was very unusual with England, Wales and Scotland all breaking their record high temperatures. Gardening in the heat is not pleasant, but in a warming world and longer periods of heat in the summer predicted for our usual temperate climate, Gardeners will have to adapt, not only in their working practices but in some areas their plant palettes too. Luckily Lucy had (for the sake of the podcast) just returned from a holiday in Rhodes, where she assures Saul she did plenty of botany to research the topic of todays podcast!

30 Jul 2022Ep. 144 - It's the lawns episode! They should be green, but most are brown - what are the consequences of this present prolonged dry spell, and do we need to re-think the quintessential UK lawn? Head Gardeners, Saul and Lucy put their thinking caps on...00:32:36

Long summer days, high temperatures and maximum sunlight are the hall marks of a good summer (lets hope for a little rain though!). Whilst May might have been unseasonally rainy for many UK gardeners, June and July have proved characteristically dry, especially for Lucy in Essex. This prompted the Head Gardener duo to assess their lawns, and ponder what the future might hold for them. Should we just accept that summer droughts equate to brown turf, or are there other planting or management options that will give us the desired green growth between our bare summer toes? Listen in to their thoughts as Lucy and Saul discuss ryegrass, Bermuda grass, and a re-think of brown grass.

Saul and Lucy both love growing food for their employers, so what have they been harvesting over the past few days? 17 Sep 2022Ep. 149 - THE EXOTIC EPISODE (Part 2): Saul is back, machete in hand, to take you on another tour of his jungle-like back garden - foliage has made way for floral delights as his garden reaches its autumnal peak.00:35:24

Autumn has arrived on the shores of the UK - a slight freshness to the mornings and a waning of the light signal that subtle change to the season. In the garden the peak colour and growth is starting to give way to the texture and autumnal colours that signal the slow, but beautiful descent, into a period of more dormant reflection. Autumn can be one of the most beautiful times of year and also a celebration of what has gone before, the present harvest of abundance but also the future excitement of gardening plans and work.

Saul returns with another episode from his back garden - at its peak of lushness much of what was foliage has now turned floral. Gingers, Brugmansia, Salvias, Begonias have burst forth with a range of hues and scent that makes September the month for the lush jungle gardens around the UK, and a last hurrah of many gardens before the colder weather begins the slow work of pruning and protection for the winter.

So, the pair expand our knowledge of what exactly soil is, the role of soil pH, how macro- and microorganisms are fundamental for cycling plant nutrients - and so much more. Hopefully, by the end of this detailed episode, your appreciation of soil will be reinforced.

07 Jan 2023Ep. 160 - We're back! And with the New Year Lucy and Saul go back to their roots, discussing what a Head Gardener should consider when first appointed to the role00:37:30

We are in the depths of winter, and whatever the weather may - or may not - have in store for us in this traditionally chilly month, Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy turn their thoughts to the year ahead. Often mistaken for a quieter season, there are plenty of winter tasks to complete and projects to initiate. Winter pruning, leaf clearing, renovations and new plantings will all be discussed (we can't promise that conversations about biscuits and lists won't also appear...). Whatever the topic, the duo hope to prime us all for the unfolding gardening seasons.

In this episode, we hear from newly appointed Head Gardener, Danny, asking what advice we would have liked to have been given when we first stepped into our roles. Assessing resources, not rushing in, trusting your instincts and being happy with your decisions are all top of the list, as Lucy and Saul consider the varied tasks and responsibilities this role brings. Hopefully these will resonate with Head Gardener listeners, and guide up-and-coming horticulturists, too.

14 Jan 2023Ep. 161 - Saul and Lucy are failures! But things going wrong in the garden is one of the most important parts of the horticultural process. So we both take a look at how we should all be more open about when we fail to make us better gardeners.00:32:55

This week both Saul and Lucy are failures!! But does that matter - of course not. Failure - things going wrong, plants dying, weather ruining our garden are all part of the process, and in fact should be celebrated rather than hidden away. This episode we talk about failure as one of the most important parts in the life of gardener and how it informs a future practice and makes us look at the garden in a different light.

21 Jan 2023Ep. 162 - Where do you gain your garden inspiration? That was the question put to Saul and Lucy by a green-fingered listener, so the duo discuss what gets their horticultural juice flowing00:34:50

With snowfall and spring indicators at the forefront of Saul and Lucy's minds, it's clear the start of the season is still at the mercy of the weather. But this downtime is an excellent opportunity to initiate revamping or restructuring areas of your plot, so get your design head on! Regardless of whether your garden is estate- or courtyard-sized there are plenty of resources out there to whet our appetites and twitch our purse strings. So, with that in mind, the duo describe those that are their favourites.

28 Jan 2023Ep. 163 - The garden maybe either too wet or frozen to get outside, but it gives most gardeners the chance to plan, and that is exactly what Head Gardeners Lucy and Saul are doing, so listen in to see how they are preparing from the year ahead.00:35:38

The constant rain or frost maybe slightly depressing at this time of year - especially if you are itching to get outside and start working the soil! But it does give us an excuse to sit in our potting shed or workshop and start writing up those plans for the year. Saul and Lucy are making plans now for the year as a great way of giving our work structure as we get busier and busier come the spring and summer. Ordering plants and seeds, maintaining or purchasing machinery, surveying trees and getting creative with new border designs are an ideal way to spend your time now to get on leg-up on the season ahead. So listen in to see what the Head Gardening pair are putting together!

We've all enjoyed those visits to gardens where we've left with bellies full of cake and an imagination full of ideas, so why not become a significant part of that hugely rewarding process? Opening your garden for charity can feel like a daunting process, but inspired by the National Garden Scheme's recent 2023 media launch, Lucy and Saul discuss the many benefits it can bring. Talking to an NGS county organiser, and overcoming any hesitancies you might have, will help raise funds for brilliant causes and give your garden a motivational focus.

Gardening, like all hobbies and professions, are not immune to the fashions of the moment - whether you're a Galanthophile, Daffodilaholic or need to be the biggest pumpkin on social media. But are these trends the horticultural world's friend or foe, the answer is complicated, whereas trends help highlight the garden to newcomers they can also form a barrier of gardening perfection and cost for some. Lucy and Saul take a look at what trends they follow and those that are maybe a little bemusing.

Here, she talks you through her 2023 grow your own plans, as she daydreams of early broad beans, baby carrots and lush spinach. Fruit pruning also needs to be completed, and while some trees should be cut back in summer, there are plenty of edible berry and orchard crops that warrant attention now. The episode is also audio-bombed by Isaac (the cat). Never let it be said that we don't go the extra mile to lay on a suitably furry Saul stand-in...!

Lucy has been at the cutting edge of journalism this week at the Garden Press Event, so Saul takes you on a solo journey down the Dawlish Water at Stonelands to look at what wildlife greets him on a beautiful February morning. Gardening for Wildlife is a big topic for discussion in the garden media at the moment, with many gardeners specifically creating elements of the garden with wildlife in mind - so Saul discusses his view on encouraging wildlife and why its necessary to think about our animal cousins as an essential part of the garden makeup.

What is that on the horizon - well it's Spring of course. The klaxon for warmer, longer days is finally sounding and Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy are looking forward to it immensely. Join them both as they navigate this beautiful time of year bringing you the sights and sounds of Stonelands and East Donyland, as well as their home gardens and beyond.

This week, Lucy has been given the exciting task of observing an ancient Donyland border plan, and interpreting what direction it should take next. Given the climate's present desire to turn on a sixpence, should she attempt to preserve the original designer's plans, or is she at will to evolve them? All gardeners face similar questions in their borders, large and small, so she and Saul muse over what the modern day design process should be. Oh, and we also get exciting peach and tomato news!

With Saul taking a well deserved rest, Lucy delves into her past to explain why she is such a keen horticulturist. Now retired, her smallholder parents had a massive influence on her career choice. Their horticultural heritage also sheds light on a fascinating collective of market gardeners who, between them at their peak, produced 50 per cent of the UK's glasshouse salads. Termed the 'Land Settlement Agency', it brought many happy times for Lucy and her parents, as hopefully the interviews confirm (apologies to those two asparagus customers!!).

Spring is a wonderful time of year but also incredibly busy for all professional gardeners up and down the country as the gardens come alive with colour, texture and the occasional weed! Join them both as they navigate this beautiful time of year, bringing you the sights and sounds of Stonelands and East Donyland, as well as their home gardens and beyond.

It's the highlight of the horticultural calendar, as the Talkings Heads pair head to the big smoke of London for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The show is always a talking point for any garden year, sometimes controversial, but always a mecca of what the UK and the world can achieve in the horticultural sphere. Gardens embraced a more naturalistic, sustainable theme with the hot topic of 'weeds' bringing much deliberation. The Great Pavilion felt more alive than ever, with a buzz that has been missing for a couple of years - some of the displays, including the exhibit Lucy was involved in building, were magnificent. We also tucked into some good food, admired a fantastic greenhouse and, as with every year, gossiped and chewed the cud with all our garden friends that we might only see in this hub-bub of the horticultural world.

03 Jun 2023Ep. 181 - Talking Heads, the big build! Lucy and her family have been busy erecting a sizeable summerhouse in their garden this week, so she and Saul discuss the benefits that are sheds, greenhouses, fruit stores, bothies and other key structures.00:33:41

What is that on the horizon - well, it's Spring of course. The klaxon for warmer, longer days is finally sounding and Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy are looking forward to it immensely. Our gardens are increasingly becoming a space where we can extend our social activities, and a well placed garden building can bring a sense of occasion to the proceedings. But what are the considerations for these (often) costly installations? Where exactly should they be sited, do aesthetics have to be compromised by practicalities, and how on earth do you encourage a 4-meter length of timber to bend exactly where you want it to? Saul and Lucy discuss all this and more, as we also ponder the weather (of course) and salivate at the promise of more biscuits.

Wow - trying to keep up with any garden as we slip from the spring into summer is always a tall order. Lucy and Saul are full throttle at the moment trying to max out the best of their gardens - chopping, pruning, dead-heading, staking, sowing, harvesting, mowing, strimming, and hopefully fitting in some resting, are all part of our daily make-up of work. To keep up Lucy and Saul have been writing lists of tasks, not all get done, but at least we know what needs doing - the same for this podcast episode, where the list of topics feels just as full, so join us again down the garden path for more Horti-waffle!

We've all been there with are gardens - not enough time in the day to do all those tasks you want to, not enough resources to get the garden looking 100% and not enough space for all those idealist plans. Well gardening, especially professionally in very large spaces, is as much about compromise as it is about getting everything looking perfect. Ommmpphhh. Lucy and Saul are showing the wear and tear for the garden season, it is important to look after your body to keep you gardening all year long, so sometimes taking it a little easier is a good thing. But do plants have that luxury or is it GO GO GO during their brief season to get the maximum out of their gardening time. Feeding is an important part of keeping your precious plants healthy and hearty but do we really know what were doing when we 'slosh' on our chosen food, and is feeding really needed at all, or is it all about looking after that precious topsoil!

Cats and Dogs - and the whole farm yard too - its pretty wet out there even in the deserts of Essex. Though a complete opposite to last years dry weather, the rain has meant lush gardens, an explosion of weeds, but also soggy gardeners! However, Lucy has had more on her mind (and body) than the constant precipitation, as her shoulder pain continues to prevent her doing what she loves most in the garden, so the Head Gardening pair take a look at how to manage your body during this most physical of jobs and why its important to think about your health as an important factor for a long and fruitful career.

Phew! There doesn't seem much time to catch breath, at the moment. Lucy is still unpacking from her show garden adventures, while Saul is dashing between RHS Plant (TOP!) committee duties and Hardy Plant Society events. But the estate gardens are still growing so the duo must also give them due attention and management. Scorching weather has lessened the speed of turf growth (thankfully) so mowing tasks have been replaced by watering and deadheading. With 70mm of rain in two hours, Saul's description of subsequent flooding in Devon reminds us that, ultimately, the weather dictates all in the garden. With rivers looking like 'Willy Wonka's chocolate factory' has Stonelands escaped unscathed? 14 Oct 2023Ep. 197 - After a couple of weeks hiatus, the #TalkingHeads pair are back, and waffling on about the gardening they've been up to since Autumn started to show it's colours.00:35:02

Autumn signals the slow descent into slumber for another year - but not before the fireworks of the late flowering perennials, exotics and bulbs, the harvest of the last of the beautiful summer veg and finally the firework bank of the tree's as they turn there annual colours of orange, reds and yellows. Its time to switch up the usual gardening to get on with some bigger jobs and also dust off the longer trousers, thermals and the rain coat as moisture levels increase and the temperatures go down. Autumn is always a time for both reflection and planning as the previous growing season and next collide in the Head Gardeners mind - so join Lucy and Saul every week as they bring you more tales from their gardening lives!

It's been three weeks since Head Gardening pair Saul and lucy have recorded a podcast together, so as with every gardener who hasn't touched base for a while its non-stop horti-waffle as we catch up with what has been happening as Summer makes way for the Autumn harden. Lucy updates us as to where her gardening journey is taking her post-East Donyland, and Saul updates us on the Squash harvest, one of the few veg that he has finally mastered (maybe!).

21 Oct 2023Ep. 198 - It's bulb planting time! Are you a tulip fan, a daffodil collector or a hoarder of alliums, lilies & fritillaries? These two Head Gardeners plant a plethora of bulbs in autumn, so they sing the praises of both stalwarts & lesser known species00:39:45

It's official - Saul and Lucy love tulips! Whether they're showy Darwins and Triumphs, or the more diminutive species, the duo have been busy stocking up on this late spring performer. Daffodils, too, have been purchased, be they ones for naturalising in turf, or planting into pots to fill the air with scent. Fritillaries, anemones, scillas, muscari, lilies, alliums - between Lucy and Saul the stock of Peter Nyssen and J Parkers has been severely dented! We finish the episode with a flurry of other jobs to complete on your estate, large or small, proving that autumn is one of the key seasons for cracking on with practical tasks.

We hope you enjoy.

For the Bonus Episode #20 we are joined by Stonelands Gardener Brian Langley - who although recently retired, spent 45 years in the National Trust as a gardener firstly at Tatton Park in Cheshire, but for the last 37 years at Antony House in Cornwall. Now in his retirement he shows no sign of slowing down working at Stonelands House part-time, volunteering for numerous charities and biking off to all parts of the UK and the World. A passionate advocate for the natural world and enabling everyone to engage and enjoy it, we chat about his life and work.

Saul is hunkering down on the Devonshire estate of Stonelands, as yet more rain and accompanying high winds, in the form of storm Ciaran, hits our shores. In Essex, Lucy will be less affected by storms but this week she admits to feeling melancholy as she says goodbye to the gardens at East Donyland Hall. Regular listener, Tufty, poses a question about hedge trimmers, which gets the duo thinking about harnesses, back safety, petrol, electric and battery operated models. As ever, there's a lot to discuss!

11 Nov 2023Ep. 200 - We've reached a huge milestone in the #TalkingHeads Gardening adventure, and are so thankful to everyone who has listened over the years - so lets celebrate with a cryptic Horti-quiz!00:33:28

Well - who would have thought 4 (ish) years ago when Lucy and Saul tried to record their wafflings it would lead to 200 episodes of the Talking Heads Podcast. The Gardening pair are more than humble and slightly bemused with it all, but so incredibly thankful to all the loyal and soon-to-be loyal listeners that have joined us over the timespan of this venture. So what better way to celebrate then to set a simple (Saul) and cryptic (Lucy) quiz - and remember best answers to us through our social media wins! Here's to another 200 (or at least another 20) episodes - CHEERS!

16 Nov 2023Ep. 201 - After last week's milestone episode, Saul and Lucy are back to normal topics such as the weather, listener questions and extracurricular activities (in this case, RHS committee work). No cryptic questions in sight!00:32:25

With rainfall and storms still dominating the news, Lucy and Saul open this episode with a look at the monthly rainfall for (usually) dry Essex. There are also listener questions on pelargonium overwintering and green manure management, along with a little insight into the workings of RHS committees. The duo also look at jobs for early winter, as Lucy delves into her 'Donyland Diaries' (Saul is hastily finding a suitable jingle...). Leaf gathering, bulb planting and hardy veg sowing are just a few of the tasks that she and her team were completing.

02 Dec 2023Ep. 202 - With Saul back (just about) on his feet, we talk about the potential gardening that he could have done, winter-flowering shrubs and Lucy's glamorous day out at the Garden Media Guild Awards - all while wrapping up warm!00:32:40

Saul is in full recovery, and returning to Stonelands for a full weeks gardening was just the tonic - and with the frigid and dry days of winter finally here it means we can get stuck into some 'proper' gardening. Lucy has a lovely listeners question about pruning Witch-hazel, which gets the gardening pair thinking about winter flowers, and she also relives here Garden Media Guild Award experience where the great and good meet to celebrate their achievements in the world of Gardening in the press, podcasts and photography.

07 Dec 2023Ep. 203 - Winter has arrived in the UK! With it, Saul and Lucy shift their mindset towards cool-season jobs in the garden - and there are plenty. Led by Lucy's 'Donyland Diaries' the duo discuss gardening projects for December00:36:44

Never mind Autumn - Winter is here! (And apologies, because it's Lucy's fault - and NOT Tomasz Schafernaker's - if you're experiencing dank, mild conditions this week.) With the drop in temperatures comes a switching of seasons, so Saul and Lucy look this week at what can be achieved in their gardens. Actually, it's quite a lot! So, whether you want to thwart weeds, knock pests on the head, renovate your compost heap, check in on your pelargoniums, cut back your tender plants, or sit by the fireside with a tempting seed catalogue, there's still plenty to be completed on the plot. And if you do stumble across an impressively long iris rhizome, you know who to tell...

16 Dec 2023Ep. 204 - 2023 is nearly over, but there's still one outstanding 'job' to do at #TalkingHeads podcast HQ, the answers to our anniversary quiz!00:40:14

Winter in the UK is either mild and damp, or cold and windy - and who would want to be outside as a gardener at this time of year - well Saul and Lucy for one, as this time of year is some of the busiest in all the 12 months. While the garden may be slumbering, Head Gardeners and their teams are beavering away on major jobs, garden renovations, cleaning and tidying the years clutter and making plans for 2024. So join us every week to see what we're up to in the cold months in our work and home gardens.

It's the episode you've all been waiting for (well at least three of you anyway) - yes the answers to the fiendishly cryptic 200th anniversary quiz - if you didn't enter but still gave it a go a month back see how you've done. Lucy and Saul also talk Poinsettia - a stable of the UK Christmas decorations - but remember its not just a plant for Christmas!

Lucy (with family in tow) have headed to the land of Vegemite and Roos to enjoy some winter time sun (or is that summer!?) and lets us into what she has been admiring in the gardens she has seen, her visits to the local garden centre and her battles with some of the local bird population.

13 Jan 2024Ep. 207 - THE AUSSIE SPECIAL (Part 2): Lucy is still Down Under enjoying the summer life, while Saul dons the extra winter layers as the cold finally descends in the UK - time for a little bit of the Hunter Valley, some Kookaburras and pruning apple trees00:36:23

Winter in the UK is either mild and damp, or cold and windy - and who would want to be outside as a gardener at this time of year - well Saul and Lucy for one, as this time of year is some of the busiest in all the 12 months. If there was any sign that Lucy was at the opposite ends of the earth then the weather (in true Talking Heads style) would be it. While Saul has put on the extra layers and woolly hat due to winter finally catching up with the UK, Lucy is sunbathing in +25C heat in the Australian summer. But the pair are still enjoying their gardens and plants - as dry weather means pruning is Saul's main focus and the beauty of the Hunters Valley means wine, chocolate and cheese is Lucy's!

One of the drawbacks of any holiday is returning home, and with Lucy its no different as the combined Time zone difference and temperature shock means she taking a little time to recover. So Saul takes the opportunity to bring the listeners to Stonelands where the mercury bottoms out at -4C, so work is constrained to those areas of the garden where a deep frost isn't too prevalent. Rose pruning is the main the aim while he waits for the thaw, but expect a number of warm cups of tea, that is until the Devon Air Ambulance drops in!

Winter is slowly dissolving into Spring - and especially this year where the mildness and wet has caused many plants to start their Spring early and the lawns are quite shaggy from continual growth.
