Ep.7-Dr. Adam Causgrove
00:58:01
It is that time of year, the induction ceremony into the Mustache Hall of Fame, brought to us by The American Mustache Institute and Wahl Trimmers. I am joined by Dr. Adam Causgrove, president of The American Mustache Institute, member of the member of the Steel City Beard and Mustache Club, and friend, to discuss the induction and other news in the world of facial hair. One of the current hot topics that we discussed was Donald Mattingly and his institution of his "clean shaven" policy for the Marlins this season. The AMI, American Mustache Institute, has gone to great lengths to protest what the former New York Yankee first baseman is doing to prevent his team from having a "winning season" and the Dr. and I talked about how much of an impact the Institute was actually having on the situation. We also discussed the Mustache Hall of Fame and what was going on with this years nominations and past winners and dove into what AMI does for "our people".

Douglas Smith of Phoenix Shaving joins Talking Beards and we discuss the art of shaving. He gives us some tips on products and proper care of your skin. Scott has tried out a bunch of his products and raves about the results he has got from all of them. Douglas also shared some fun history lessons on shaving and the products that were made many years ago. Scott, Aaron, Chris, and Douglas had a very entertaining time talking about aliens and played some "alien" trivia with the LIVE audience. We also had a real "flub" at the start of the live stream on YouTube but we caught it for the podcast so make sure to listen all the way to the end to hear the hilarious commentary we had over some random cartoon that took over our feed!!! As usual, check out the following links and share with your friends!

What an eye opener this interview was with Douglas Smythe of Phoenix Shaving. He made me want to climb back into the womb to incubate a tad longer to grow into true “manhood”. Douglas shared with me techniques of “wet” shaving and his thoughts on the conspiracy of the multi-blade cartridge companies. Tips galore are found in this episode with a true crafter of high quality, tested shaving products. Not only is Douglas the purveyor of some exquisite shaving items, he also caters to the bearded man with oils, and waxes to tame that glorious mustache. If you are looking to learn the “right” way to properly shave and maintain that style, Douglas Smythe is your guy! Be sure to check him out on all his websites/blogs/social media and try some Phoenix Shaving products today.
We asked our listeners to submit questions for us to answer. We had some really great questions that came in-some really funny and some really serious. We hope you enjoy this special episode-we are thinking of doing more of these so if you have any questions email them to us at talkingbeards1@gmail.com.

EP.54- Chris Odom
01:12:50
Chris Odom from Beards In Review YouTube is this weeks guest. This page has become one of my new favorites on the interwebs recently covering "beard" topics. His she contains an brief product review, a quick little news segment and a featured beard, or mustache of the week. The Beardcaster was the beard of the week on his episode #14, what a treat that was! Each episode is a nice bite sized morsel of about 5 minutes and has excellent production and is of top quality! Chris and I talked about how he ended up getting into the YouTube game and how he is trying to grow his channel. Chris was a great hang and too bad we didn't know each other sooner, we woulda had some good times in Austin! Be sure to check out BEARDS IN REVIEW in YouTube and be sure to subscribe and follow along!

The 2023 National Beard & Moustache Championships
01:13:24
The 2023 National Beard & Moustache Championships will be held on November 4th in Beautiful Daytona Beach Florida!!! Tonight we will get all the news and information from Mr. MJ Johnson himself.
Ticket proceeds from this years National Beard and Moustache Championships and Exhibition Show will benefit a Volusia County Hurricane Relief fund, Movember, and Equality Florida.
We will have the full schedule of events and you will get your chance to ask all the questions you want answered for Nationals!!!
Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a judge at a beard and mustache competition? My guests Aaron and Natali Johnston are probably two of the most sought after people asked to judge these events. There are many angles to the "art" of judging from setting up an event and picking your judges to what specifics each look for. What is the protocol or etiquette that one needs to have to approach judging such events? These are just a few of the things we discussed along with personal favorite moments and events that they have enjoyed in the past. All your judging questions will be answered and your next competition should be met with confidence as you hit the stage knowing how to approach the judges and what they are looking for.
Visit THE BEARDCASTER website for more fun “bearding” info:
Tonight is the night for the "Chopped: Craft Beards!!!" Aaron and Scott were both sent a box with 5 different items to construct their first craft beards. There will be a 45 minute "build off" as the boys try to out do each other. While Aaron and Scott are crafting their beards, Producer Natali and Tisha Chickenbread of the Texas Craft Whisker Club, will commentate and explain the process of making a craft beard. They will also be talking about how each of us will be picking someone to be the next challengers on "Chopped: Craft Beards" and how YOU can participate in this fun!!!
Kenny Parbel is the President of the Ohio Chapter and SGT. At-Arms for the National Chapter of Bearded Sinners. Upon learning of who the Bearded Sinners were, my world was opened to another side of the “bearding community” that I wasn’t aware existed. Both Kenny and I got our start in the club scene at the same event back in 2012 and didn’t even know we had crossed paths numerous times. We “officially” met at the Morgan Hose VFD fundraiser beard and mustache contest, EP.71 (http://thebeardcaster.libsyn.com/podcast/ep71-morgan-hose-volunteer-fire-department-fundraiser) and he pulled me aside and wanted to tell me about their annual fundraiser Pig Roast they hold that was coming up Labor Day weekend. We set up a time to meet and got together at a small bar in Ravena, Ohio and enjoyed a couple adult beverages and had a chat about beards and clubs and social issues. We talked about the history and nuances of The Bearded Sinners and how they have gone under my radar for the past few years. My eyes were really opened to a side of the beard “clubs” that don’t really participate in the competitive charity beard events and focus more on local community outreach and local fundraising. We also discussed the issues of assembling chapters of a club and the problems they have come across in the past. If you like the message of the Bearded Sinners and are interested in checking out more about their club goto https://www.facebook.com/BSBCOHIO/ to get more information.
We have a special new host for the show tonight, Natali D. Johnston. We are going to be talking about the last few days of registration for our on-line competition and lots of news. We will also talk about the Craft Whisker Club that meets every Monday night and what A great group of people that are involved. Make sure you check out all the links below.....
This weeks guest fell through so Aaron and Scott dive deep into the BS Button Beard Bulletin Board to talk about what is currently going on in the community. Scott almost killed Aaron by making him laugh so hard and we find out why there is a bounty on Scott's head now...

Talking Beards (the club) - The Competition Vol. 3
Talking Beards (the club) & Talking Beards the podcast have teamed up with the Facial Hair League to present to you the most unique online beard competition. It will take place LIVE May 27th and will be hosted LIVE on-line by Talking Beards. All proceeds raised will be donated to Josh Grinthorr Druin he is a member of the Derby City Whisker Cub. He is battling kidney failure and needs help with medical expenses. We just want to help our friend out!
We will be doing a 16 category online competition consisting of 16 categories and will be limited to the first 20 people that enter each category. Each person who wants to participate will make a donation for their competitor ticket. Then you create an account on the FHL app. Then send Talking Beards your best picture. Send to TalkingBeards1@gmail.com.
The Facial Hair League was established in 2014, bringing together Facial Hair clubs and enthusiasts focused on raising money for non-profit organizations and celebrating the men, women and kids that love expressing themselves with that which grows on the face. There are women and children competition categories that are very popular, competitive and encourage philanthropy. The FHL supports events all over the world — there is something for facial hair fans, competitors, clubs and donating corporations
FHL fans can participate in events and even vote using the FHL mobile app.
1. Moustache - This is just a plain ole Moustache-if you got one come on and join the fun.
2. Styled Moustache - This is for that moustached man who likes to dress his stache up a little bit. Wanna do some curls? Wanna do the English Style? Wanna go for the Dali??? Show us how creative you can be!
3. Chops - These are you general sideburns that will run down you cheeks but are separated by a clean shaven chin. Mustache is optional in this one. Just remember, Talking Beards does not condone you to choose to have this style as your preferred facial hair choice.
4. Whaler - The Donegal or Amish Beard, is nothing more than a Full beard without a moustache…
5. Goatee -The GREATEST OF ALL Facial hair styles!!! This is having a 2 inch gap between your ear lobe and the beginning of your beard. A moustache is optional!
6. Full Beard Styled Stache- If you have a full beard and have a glorious moustache-style that stache up and enter this category.
7. Full Beard under 4 inches -Got a full beard that is under 4 inches??? Measure from under your bottom lip… If your beard falls under 4 inches-this is your category.
8. Full Beard 4-8 inches - Got a full beard that is between 4 and 8 inches??? Measure from under your bottom lip… If your beard falls between 4 inches and 8 inches-this is your category.

Hair spray, wax and gel are OK. If you add coloring, or accessories look to our new "Men's Creative Category!"
13. Whiskerina Realistic - Calling all of our lovely ladies out there. Can you make a “real” looking beard or mustache from real hair, synthetic hair, or crepe wool? It can just be a simple beard-or you may choose to style it up but make it look as real as possible!
14. Whiskerina Craft - Lets see your craft side ladies!!! Grab some of your crafting products and build yourself something pretty-but to wear as a beard!!! Try to be creative and resourceful and have some fun with this-but remember it still needs to be beard shaped!!!
15. Men’s Creative - Have you created a beard for “Chopped Craft” or do you have some Crafting skills you’d like to show off? This category is for you then! We want to give the guys a chance to show off their whiskerina skills or the chance to show off their enhanced freestyle skills.
This is open to all men that either want to make a full craft beard OR make a freestyle beard that includes adding color or accessories to the creation, the sky is the limit!!!!!
-show us what you got!!!
16. Combo Beard - A Talking Beards exclusive category! This is one we have been talking about for years- A tag team beard. How this works is this: If you have a goatee-team up with a chops guy to make the best “full beard”. If you are a whaler-find a great mustache guy to make the best beard.
How this is all going to work:
1. You will register for these categories by going to our Eventbrite page:
2. You will select which category you would like to participate in.
3. You will then “purchase” your event ticket by submitting a donation. It can be whatever you feel like making it- $5, $15, $50, whatever you can donate-we all know times are tough right now so we understand if you can’t afford to give a lot. Every thing that we collect for this online competition will be donated directly to Maddie.
4. Download the FHL app on Apple or Android. Create your account with the same email address you used for your Eventbrite purchase.
5. Then you just send your photo to talkingbeards1@gmail.com OR you can upload them to the FHL app yourself by going to the Talking Beards (the club) event
6. The photo you will submit will have to be a selfie of you and you beard. We want a current selfie of you and your beard, or creation.
7. Once we receive your name, email, and photo we will add your information into our virtual event on the FHL app.
Submissions will be stopped at 11:30 pm on May 27th.
8. Voting will go a little different this time. Last time we let everyone vote though the app. This year we are going to have a panel of judges. The plan will be for the judges to meet at noon on the morning of the event and we will go through FHL and they will submit their votes. Then our team will put together the presentation and everyone will be able to watch the results live May 27th at 7:00pm Est on ALL of the Talking Beards locations (YouTube, Facebook, website, twitch, twitter, ETC)
9. Aaron and Scott will be the virtual “emcees” for the online competition. People, participants, and fans can tune in as we introduce each of the people who have entered this competition. We will go through each person until we find out who was voted “Top 3” . We will then announce who won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and then move onto the next category until we have completed this round. We will be doing this LIVE on our Talking Beards Facebook page as well as streaming it LIVE at www.talkingbeards.com
10. Winners will receive A Trophy designed and created by Trophies Unlimited in Aiken SC. They will also receive some great prizes from Honest Amish and the claim to fame as a Talking Beards (the club), The competition Winner.
11. Each player that places in the top 3 will also be given a point total that will display onto their FHL app profile.
We understand that times are different right now and all we want to do is have some fun with our people. There are a bunch of other on-line/virtual beard camps that have already been popping up. Each one has a different idea. of how they are going to conduct their on-line competition, but this is how we thought it could be the most fun for everyone involved. We didn't want it to be just about the beard and mustache growers. We want to get more people involved-open up our "nook" to the rest of the world and share what we do. We have always been firm believers of expanding the facial hair community and this was our idea to do so. We want to draw in a whole new community so ours may grow and do more for lots of people. We want people to have fun, experience something new, and grow the facial hair community.

Regev Nystrom has been doing freestyle beards for almost 35 years and has moderate success with his creative designs. Episode 69 is my "sex packed" episode and I thought Regev would be the perfect guide to take us on a fun adventure into the world of the unknown. What sets him apart from all these other creative beard wearers is his natural born talent of translation of gay porn from English to Japanese flawlessly. He discovered this hidden talent years ago while working in a corporate matzo ball factory outside of Chicago Il as a young gay Jew. We discussed the gay lifestyle and I questioned him about what "bears" were and other assorted questions I had about this unknown world to me. This was an extremely entertaining, thought provoking, and educating interview with one of the most beloved individuals in the facial hair scene. I hope you enjoy this "racey" discussion and learn a few things about this legend in the bearding community. Be aware we cover some topics that might be uncomfortable for some to listen to so listen at your discretion.

How does one get into competitive beard and mustache competitions??? As the great Geauga County Maple Festival is about to kick of in Chardon OH, I reflect upon where I got my start in the beard and mustache culture. It was my first competition many years ago and lead me to many great places and to meet some great people from all over the country. I thought I would ask a couple of other Maple Fest Beard alumni to join me to talk about where they got their start and how it lead to competing in the larger, club style events. Ryan Smith and Stephen Hart join me to talk about how you get into competing and tips for those who maybe afraid to get up on the stage for the first time. Emily Gambrel also joined us to discuss the Maple Festival Beard and Mustache contest and how her and I got together, with Kim Lloyd, to be the organizers of this long running contest. We all got our start at the same place and experienced the same hurdles and went on to excel in larger scale events. Check out episode 31 to hear how we did it and the advice we share to gain confidence!!!
The Circus of Whiskers is not just any ordinary facial hair competition. It's a naughty carnival where weirdness and creativity come together to create an unforgettable experience. This year, we're thrilled to host our eighth installment at Small's Bar in Hamtramck! Mark your calendars, and don't forget to keep your beard wild and free!
To enter the event, we kindly request a cash donation of $25. But trust us when we say it's worth every penny. With intermission performances by The Big Icky, burlesque performances by Magenta DeMure, Marina Casanova, Sophia Von Stardust, Sweet Handsome Two Heart, and drag performances by Xanadu Shee & JahJah Shee, you're guaranteed a night full of entertainment.
And if that wasn't enough reason to attend this amazing event, all proceeds will be donated to Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG). DAWG is an incredible organization made up of over 100 volunteers who are dedicated to helping animals in need. From neglected pets to sick animals and even homeless critters, they do whatever it takes to make sure these furry friends are taken care of.
So come on down and join us for the competition! We've got categories for everyone - from natural mustaches to creative fake beards for the whiskerinas. Let's get weird and make some unforgettable memories together while supporting a great cause!

Over the past few weeks I have been noticing something a bit more around me, attitude. Attitude seems to be a major influence in life and can effect our moods, and our way of life. Attitude also influences others and tends to pull those that are like-minded in their direction, a "magnetic" kind of attraction. Sometimes a toxic attitude can pull you down a dark road, one of negativity and pain. The one end of the spectrum you may find those that emit a great deal of positive attitude. These people are a special breed, ones who absorb life and live it to its fullest. I recently had an experience that opened my eyes to the true influence of "attitude" on ones life.
Today, as I write this, my grandmother of 101 just passed away. It has been a difficult week for my family as we have been dealing with the possible moving on of the mother of our family. The threat of death brings out an urgency of life; to experience more of it and to take in as much as you can as fast as possible. I wanted to try and enjoy the time I may have left to enjoy this kind, loving, and energetic woman. What I learned the most from her in her past week of life was about her attitude. Her attitude was always so invigorating, very positive, and made her shine above the rest. It gave her a reason to get up everyday, the willingness to absorb as much around her as possible. This is what truly made her the amazing woman that she was. No matter what, she always had a smile on her face and seemed to be enjoying life. It irradiated from her like sunshine and everyone around her wanted to feel her warmth and be close by. She was one of a kind and she was my grandmother.
There has been a major influx of attitude all around me lately from all types of places. This episode touches on many different aspects of attitude that I have been currently experiencing. I would like to thank Charles Abadam for the wonderful gift that he sent me. The bearding world has also shown me the power of positive attitude and the kindness of great people. I was joined this episode by Bald Faced Josh and The Child and we talked about many types of attitude and how we experience it. We had some good laughs under the circumstances but I think it was very healing for us talking about our losses and the situations that surrounded them. Please sit back and enjoy this lengthy episode, it is really a treat to be able to discuss my grandmother in this episode. I hope everyone can take away some good insight into the power of a good attitude and apply it to their own life!

Bald faced mortal, Josh, and I sit down with The Child to talk the Cleveland Indians in the World Series and Donald Trump amongst other things. The conversation began with us going over the Cavaliers Championship and which would have been more important, the World Series win by the Indians, or the Championship from the CAVS. Finding out what it is to be American and our preference in pie or cake, we learn that Rey, from Star Wars, is inspiring a whole movement of little girls to be great, not Hillary!
The final game of The World Series was slept through by Scott and Lukas so Bald Faced Josh walks us through how the game ended. The Indians fought hard and had an amazing season and we were all ok with the Cubs winning. Our conversation took a turn towards what had just happened with the election and our thoughts, and opinions, on the win of Donny Trump. The child voices his opinion on Ted Strickland and he regurgitated what he had heard on the television commercial attack ads. Josh tries to explain how politics work and Scott tries to derail the conversation by claiming Trump is just like Anakin Skywalker, and is here to bring balance back to the political world. Josh tries to tie Hillary Clinton to the Pink Power Ranger taking over the world and it turned into watching Power Rangers and MST3K.
Josh started giving us a history of great presidents and how the political landscape needed to be shook up and how career politicians needed to be taken down. We started talking about how the country may needed to be run more like a corporation and some similarities between Perot and Trump and how the country needs to be run differently. This election has really polarized the public, either the citizens are embracing the win or our extremely upset and voicing their opinions via social media.
The conversation gets pulled in the direction of who has worse hair, Trump or George Washington. One wore a wig, the other we are not so sure. The Child starts to talk about an 11 year old perspective of what happened in the election and how all his friends were all about Hillary Clinton. The Trump playground equipment was voted on and we got the child to laugh so hard he about pee’d his pants. The fake outrage that exists for people to look, and feel, important to everyone around them has become more evident with this election.
Election results were broken down as things were being released on Tuesday night via the news outlets. Josh explains how the popular vote works vs. the electoral college. We also talk about how if you don’t like either candidate you can write in any name you like, such as Vermin Supreme, as your nomination for president. Harambe was reported to have received over 11k write in votes but in researching I discovered this was not true according to CNN.
The stock exchange was greatly effected with the election of Trump, in a great way! With a lesser amount of money spent by Trump in his campaign, Trump proved that America wants something different. The market has been looking good since he was elected president. The treat of nuclear war and tensions with Russia were a concern of the child but he realizes that a president who runs out of control will be taken down by their government.

Chris Battenburg - The Best in the West Beard Festival
00:53:19
Talking Beards, the premier podcast for all things beard-related, recently interviewed Chris Battenburg, one of the organizers of the Best in the West charity beard and mustache contest. In the interview, Battenburg shared his passion for beards and how he got involved with organizing the event. He also discussed how the event has grown over the years and how it has become a platform to raise awareness about mental health issues.
Battenburg revealed that this year's festival will be bigger and better than ever before, with more categories added to the competition, including non-beard categories such as Dreads and Braids. The event will feature live music from headliners Dramarama, as well as food vendors and refreshments from local businesses. Participants can enter multiple categories for a chance to win prizes from sponsors Honest Amish and The Altruistic American.
The Best in the West charity beard and mustache contest is not just about showcasing impressive facial hair; it's also about giving back to the community. Battenburg explained that proceeds from the event will go towards The Altruistic American and establishing a mental health care facility that provides accessible care for those dealing with mental health issues. By participating in this year's festival, attendees can show their support for a great cause while having fun and celebrating all things beard-related.

-Kent Student Radio-hosting multiple types of shows, mostly music but filling in on some talk types of shows
-WJCU-doing a ‘Unsigned band’ show. Did artist interviews and collect unsigned material-…didn’t have the engineering background so it was difficult to adjust to the technology side-was kinda thrown into it because I was traveling and scouting bands on the weekends.
tried to start podcasting 2009/2010 but it never really grabbed ahold.
my band started a podcast around 2011 and did a few episodes, I appear on one but never really followed through on “doing my own”
-by this time I was becoming engrossed in podcasts. I spent a lot of time traveling and driving and needed to cleans my palate from music—-I wanted to expand my mind, learn about things, explore things I had always been interested in but never searched out.
Some podcasts that I subscribed to at this time were:
As I listened to all this content I felt like I was becoming an expert myself of the topics of UFO’s and alien abduction. All of these podcasts I found because of any of the ones I listened to before, They are all interconnected and have a lot of the same guests. After listening to the same content over and over, I needed new blood. I then discovered new content providers, and kinda traveled off the paranormal track and widened my horizons and explored a few other podcasts such as:
I needed to find some other stuff to listen to, the paranormal world was starting to depress me…I could never find any answers!!! I started looking into music, another passion. I listened to a whole bunch of different podcasts about the music industry but only 2 stuck…
By this point I knew I needed to podcast, but what about??? I figured I would try my hand at a paranormal podcast, why not-it isn’t over saturated yet??? I made a plan about my content and how I wanted to present the info so now I needed to learn how to podcast. I thought about trying to consume as much information about podcasting as I could, learn everything I could as fast as possible. I found a bunch of podcasts and subscribed and downloaded as many episodes as possible. These are some of the podcast I subscribed to to help me learn about podcasting…
I learned A LOT from all of these people. Any time I had a question about anything all I needed to do was send an email to any of these people directly and I would get instant answers. Between these people, and their YouTube channels for the visuals, I was able to build the confidence to launch my podcast!
By this point I had come to the conclusion that I didn’t need to be a player in a field that already had tons of podcasts. I needed to focus on something I knew more than anything. I needed to focus on something I didn’t think I knew someone else was doing, a podcast about beards. It wasn’t going to be podcast about the hipster “trend” that has been going on, it was going to be about the real people that grew before the trend and those who would still stand after. It was going to be about the contests they all attended, the brotherhood and sisterhood we all found together. It was going to be about the family we created, the new friends we made all because of something we grew on our faces. It was about something that we take into our everyday lives and just “do” without thinking. It is about the styles, and care, the preparation we make, and take, to grow our facial hair. It was about how we all come together to make differences in or communities, or the communities of our friends. It was about our travels to other cities to compete for bragging rights and the battles we have had. It was going to be about the products we use to look handsome, and the tips from experts on how to look the best and take care of ourselves. It was going to be about all the adventures we have…everyday. I knew that having a beard, that was abnormally long, lead to a different way of living life. It is something that draws other peoples eyes and attentions and constantly had people staring or making some dumb remark. It was a lifestyle that made me feel different and uncomfortable at times all because I chose to grow a beard. Because of my beard I found many other people like me who felt the same and had a lot of the same interests. This is what I knew, this is what my podcast needed to be about.
I came up with the name “The Beardcaster”, bought the domain, built the site and launched January 1st, 2016. I was terrified at first that I was doing everything wrong, that I was going to mess up. After time my confidence built and now 9 months later, 17 episodes, I look back feeling silly. Everything feels much easier to do. Recording episodes is much easier. Editing is much easier. Uploading and posting is much easier. The only thing that isn’t easy is growing an audience. That takes the most work. It takes finding them and getting in their faces, or beards! It takes another type of confidence to not be afraid to get out in the world and talk face to face about your “art” and why you believe in it and why they should listen. The more personal you can become with a person the more likely they may take a listen.
Providing content that is rich and advantageous to a listener is also another challenge a podcaster can find. The word “value” comes up a lot in conversations with podcasters. What is the “value” that you provide to your listeners? The value I try to provide to the people that listen to my podcast is this: learning. I want them to learn about something they may know nothing about. I want them to learn about something they have been a part of for a long time that they just discovered. I want them to learn how to take care of themselves. I want them to learn about people that need help and how those of us in the facial hair world help them out. I want them to learn about being free of public scrutiny and the judgmental eyes of so many people. I want them to learn to do something, to be inspired to try something new. I want them to laugh at everything, to not be so serious and just relax in their own skin; or hair.
John "Boo-Font" Fontenot is here to talk about the upcoming event Mobb Fest 5 that is in Calhoun Louisiana held in a very prestigious venue-his back yard! This year the charity is DART, Domestic Abuse Resistance Team, a non-profit organization whose mission is to serve & protect people victimized by domestic violence.

This past weekend I attended the 10th annual Mustachio Bashio and there was an ocean ofmustaches of all types to be seen! I have attended the past three years and look forward to this event as I have made some great new friends. There were many mustaches of all shapes and sizes on participants as well as some interesting beards thrown into the mix of this celebration of facial hair. Voted on by an esteemed panel of judges, the winners take home a special handmade award and the bragging rights for the year. Last year I interview one of the founders of the event, Mike Laur, and learned about the history of the event and how it has grown and managed great success in raising money for their charity, the JDRF. I wanted to talk to some of the key players that were involved in this years Mustachio and get their take on the event and hear how they were involved in this years gathering. Take a listen to hear what each person had to say about Mustachio Bashio and I hope you enjoy!
ERIC LEISER
The first person I spoke with was Mustachio’s long time photographer, Eric Leiser. Everyone in attendance knows who Eric is-he is the guy carrying around the big camera taking thousands of pictures documenting the celebration of the mustache. We talked about his photography and the latest project he had worked on. Eric also gave us a call back to a very famous mustache that inspired the whole thing and the charity involvement. For more information on Eric and his photography, and to also see photos from this years event, visit www.leiserphoto.com
MIKE LAUR
I am joined by Mr. Mike Laur again to talk about what a success Mustachio Bashio has become. I am truly thankful for meeting this man and being able to help spread the message of the event and the charity involved. Mike has a big heart and continues to grow this event as well as grow a fantastic mustache. Thank you Mike for putting on such a great and charitable contest!
Anna Lee of Brutal Beard, from Cleveland Ohio, joins me as my next guess. I can't give enough praise on the Brutal Beard line of products. Anna makes some of the best products that my beard has ever had the luxury of using, simply magnificent!!! Not only does Anna make some world class products but she knows her science behind it all. Listen in to hear her explain a little about the Brutal Beard line of products. Keep your ears peeled for a future episode of The Beardcaster where Anna and I sit and dive into beard care and what is behind oils and their benefits to you and your beard.
Another founder of Mustachio Bashio ions me for a brief talk on his family history of being a cobbler. Davis Shoemaker joins me and this about meeting Mike and the others and how this all came to be. He discussed how they chose the JDRF as the charity and the personal reasons why it was a perfect fit. It took 10 years for Davis to finally achieve his best mustache to date for this event so let us celebrate by listening in to hear his story.
MATT FISH
Bald faced Matt Fish sits down with me and talks beards and mustaches. Matt has been one of the judges, and supporters, of Mustachio Bashio for many years. Matt is best known for his restaurant, Melt Bar and Grilled, which has many locations all across Ohio. We discuss how he judged the event and his reasonings for being a bald faced mortal. Matt is one of the greatest people who I ever met and ironically it was at Mustachio Bashio a few years ago where were first connected and...well the rest is history!!! Listen in to hear our conversation. GO TRIBE!!!
My last guest of the night was a man who has lurked in the darkness and been behind one of my favorite toy stores of all-time, Big Fun. Steve Presser was an absolute delight to talk with at this mustache celebration. We discussed his thoughts on being a judge at the event and how he got involved and a quick overview of Big Fun on Coventry. I have grown up with this store and it has given me such great reminders of my childhood. If you haven't yet-be sure to check out the store and take a look around. We encourage you to not steal anything, but to purchase something fun that reminds you of your childhood and helps take you back to that magical time.

In this election year of 2016, our country faces one of the worst political showdowns in the history of America. Each candidate seems to only be fueling a fire of rage from their opponent and doing nothing but throwing punches and accusations at each other. The media seems like it only wants to be the ringleader of this 2 person circus and only focus on what these two clowns are wanting to do to our country. Our great country seems to almost be at it's darkest hour, hope is bleak, faith in government wavers, and trust is all but gone. Empty promises fill the air leaving many of us scared to make a choice in our future and the future of our children. Within a few weeks the landscape of nation will be completely different and a new president will be crowned. Within a few months the changes will go into effect, lives to be changed forever. There may only be one hope that glimmers far off in the distance with a boot on his head...
This is probably the most politically charged discussion I have ever had even though the discussion was mostly about beards. I sat down with Vermin Supreme, presidential candidate, and talked beards, beard competitions, and his ideas for utilizing beards to stop hunger in America. Vermin also flipped the interview on me and started interviewing me back for his project that he has in development, Vermin Supremes BeardWorld…more info to come soon. We tried to keep the politics to a minimum and this interview was all over the place, a definite hoot!!! We touched on a few of his campaign platforms and I tried to help him come up with a few more! Sit back and enjoy this episode, there will be MANY laughs had!
a little a-boot Vermin…
Vermin Supreme is a bearded , boot hat wearing presidential candidate. The self proclaimed Friendly Fascist, promises a free pony for every American, a fully funded time travel research program, zombie preparedness initiatives for a new American Republic and the Mandatory Toothbrush Act.
-He has been running for the office of presidency since 1992 and ran for mayor of Baltimore in 1987 and has run for pretty much every political party that is out there
-August 25, 2012: Supreme announced his new political party, the Free Pony Party, and that he has chosen fellow fringe opponent Jimmy McMillan as his running mate. Conversely, McMillan stated he was still running for president on his own Rent Is Too Damn High platform, and that Supreme would be McMillan's running mate.*
-Supreme is attempting another presidential run in 2016*

There is so much doom and gloom in the world right now and we are experiencing a different social climate. We asked our friends to post some "good news" on our bulletin board this week so we could try and spread some cheer. Each week we have been greeted with cancellation after cancellation of beard competitions world-wide and other social events linked to the community. We know there are still people out there doing good and making differences in the world-tonight we celebrate them!!!

I hope you enjoy my take on the meet, and give some love to the Fatman!"}" data-block-type="22">
Fatman's Invasion 2016 found this bearded guy, with child in tow, out for one fun adventure. Knowing event organizer, Adam "Fatman" Hurt for close to 30 years, made me feel very old and also curious as to these events he has been posting about online, and hosting, for the past 8 or so years. We traveled to tropical Thompson OH, where an event so grand, so exotic, and so flippin hot, was taking place. This was the third year for this event at Thompson Raceway Park in Northeast Ohio where hundreds upon hundreds of "tuned" and classic cars and spectators gathered for a great cause. Not only was it a car "show" of sorts, it was also a day to challenge your friends to a friendly 1/4 mile drag race...to the death. Fortunately for everyone, nobody died and there were a lot of hugs to go around.
We saw lots of really loud cars and heard some extremely smokey burn-outs, something all of my senses have never experienced. This was defiantly far from any type of event I had ever attended but I found it fascinating and a really great time!!! We met up with the Fatman himself at one point and to talk but he was quickly whisked away by tons of his adoring fans. It was easy to see why this event has grown so big so fast-it had a lot to do with this man, and his beard. The Fatman stickers were on almost every car on-site this day as a show of support of the event and the person who has made this event so popular amongst the local car scene. The Fatman logo
is a cartoonish depiction of Adam and featuring his big, bushy beard in all its glory. This year was the biggest yet in the history of the Invasion, not only in record numbers of cars and attendants, but in the amount that they raised to donate to their charity of choice, the Lake Humaine Society. Check out the podcast to find out exactly how much was donated this year. You can also hear the story first hand of how the event came to be and how it has grown to be the premiere gathering of modified and stock vehicles. The Fatman's beard is part of the whole story and a big reason I experienced, and learned, about a whole different lifestyle I probably wouldn't have known about. Listen to the story told by Adam as we met up at Melt Bar and Grilled in Mentor Ohio shortly after they had made their donation to the Lake Humane Society. Adam has a big heart and a great story that I felt needed to be shared. His beard is part of something that has made a large dent in the community and has helped a lot of needy animals. Please take a listen and share with your friends to help spread the message of those who go above and beyond.

Ep.75-Paul Hendrix and Diane Blastic of BULLY RANCH
01:07:02
The vision of an animal sanctuary and a pit bull rescue were just two of the ideas of Bully Ranch, recently started by married couple Paul Hendrix and Diane Blastic. Paul and Diance, members of the Austin Facial Hair Club, have been working with pitbulls for sometime now and have nothing but love and admiration for the breed. They have invested considerable time into understanding the training and the demeanor of this often understood animal.
In our conversation about Bully Ranch, we touched upon how everything finally came together for this to happen and how the loss of their beloved Trejo was the final piece. “His death devastated us. It was also the catalyst for getting our butts in gear to follow our dream of opening a pitbull rescue and rehabilitation center with the intent of becoming a City of Refuge for all animals. Welcome to Bully Ranch!”(-taken from Bully Ranch IG @bullyranchatx ). We discussed the importance of training and understanding your dog and the signs it may show you of being in distress, as well as how to handle those situations with proper techniques. They stressed that the importance of training is more for the human than it is for the dog. Understanding your dog’s trigger points and stress factors and how to adjust your approach to a situation is a good way gain your dog’s trust.
Paul also announced a partnership Bully Ranch had recently made and he broke the news with all of us in the beard community. The Austin Facial Hair Club has done many charity events over the years to help raise money for the local animal shelter, such as their annual Dog Beard and Mustache Competition which is emceed by Paul. The facial hair community has given a lot to animal rescues and shelters nationwide and are one of the more popular of charities donated to for many events. It seems to me that beards and dogs go hand-in-paw when it comes to the nature of this community.
I hope that you enjoy this episode and learn more about Bully Ranch. If you feel compelled, check out bullyranch.org and make a donation or order a sweet shirt. There was so much valuable information given by both Paul and Diane about their dreams for Bully Ranch and I very much enjoyed talking to them and learning about what they have planned!

BS Buttons Beard Bulletin Board- let us know about something you want to promote
2016 is rolling to an end. What a year it has been for the podcast and my involvement within the bearding community. When I first got involved in the bearding community about 5 years ago, I didn’t realize how involved communities and charities everyone participates in. As I wrap up the first year of The Beardcaster podcast I will end on a few events that I have attended over the past few weeks prior to the holidays. Over the past few years, Beards of The Old Northwest, Steel City Beards and Mustache Club, The Rust Belt Whisker Society, have gotten together to help Marines with the Toys for Tots program in Northeast Ohio. Over the past few years we have collected an AMAZING amount of new and unwrapped toys for the children of the greater Youngstown area.
This year, at the last second I decided to have my own local toy drive and see what extra toys I could collect from my community that I could add to the annual toy drive. I posted on social media that I was searching for a location for collection for a few hours the evening before our club event. I was eagerly contacted by Dan Sammon of Everybody’s Gym who offered to put collection boxes out and to host my pick up for 3 hours on a Friday night. He reached out offering his business location to help in collecting toys for the drive. He placed donation boxes in his lobby and collected many great toys from very generous members of his gym. Dan and I plan on working together in the near future to continue our charitable donations to our community…
Camelot Lanes, in Boardman Ohio has been the location of our annual toy drive and gathering of “beards” for the past few years. They have welcomed us with open arms and treat our group like family! A few years back we felt it would be a fun time to invite other outlying clubs to a central location to meet for some fun, comradery, competition, and to do something good for our community. In years past we have gathered at Lake Tavern in Cortland Ohio for their annual beard and mustache competition which would always benefit Toys for Tots. They no longer hold this event but we felt, as a group we needed to continue this charitable event and gather toys for the local Toys for Tots. Camelot Lanes became our new home for where we convene each year for the gathering. They have been nothing but wonderful to us and we hope to continue our friendship with them and make our yearly bowling event/toy drive, bigger each year!
This year we decided to reach out to Suzie's Dogs and Drafts of Boardman Ohio, to see if they wanted to assist and become part of the Toys for Tots event. They kindly offered us their establishment after our blowing event. They gave members a great discount on food and beverages and also donated a portion of sales for that evening to donate. You can refer back to my previous blog post with Anthony and Drew of Steel City to get the full vibe of our visit to Suzies's and some of the cool things they offer. It is great to build relationships with local businesses and have them see our vision of helping our communities. Though 2 out of 3 of the clubs are from a fair distance from where we met, and where we donate, there are still people/children that need assistance everywhere and we are proud to help in any way we can! We hope to also grow our relationship with Suzie's and help the members of the Rust Belt Whisker Society grow their club, and influence, and help do great things!
As I wrap up my holiday adventure, I wanted to share one last thing. Each year I take the child to Breakfast with Santa. I know each town has their own event like this but we in Chardon are lucky enough to have the REAL Santa join us for this magical treat! My Christmas spirit was all but gone a few years back. It wasn't that Christmas was not there, but as life changes we loose that magic, and we loose those that helped make that magic what it was. Christmas became a lonely place that felt void of spirit and enjoyment for me once I lost my grandmother. Meeting my now wife, and her son really changed that for me about 5/6 years ago. Adding a child and his innocence into the mix really brought back that Christmas cheer. He was able to get me back to having that childlike feeling and that excitement I used to have. To add to my "Christmas re-birth" we discovered Breakfast with Santa at our local eating joint Morgan's. This took the magic to a whole new level, Santa was perfect in every way!!! He knew so many things about everything and dazzled the child which drove that nail in of Santa being real. I was even amazed at how good Santa looked, how he presented himself and just the overall goodness that he emitted. He gave the child a special Christmas marble made by the elves. It was a hand made beautiful white, red, and green swirled marble; quite breathtaking!
As the years have gone on Santa and Lukas have grown a special bond together. He knows so much about the child he gives him that Christmas cheer and love all year long. The magic of Santa is alive in our family. Being at the age where children are loosing their belief in this magical man, our home is still full of Christmas magic. Each Breakfast with Santa makes the spirt grow and helps us remember the reasons we feel fell in love with Christmas as a child. It also helps us realize part of the magic is to give to others that are struggling or who can't experience what we can due to hardship or some other downfall. I think this aspect, and being part of a group-all because of my beard, has really opened my eyes to focusing on helping others and trying to do good for the community. This is what MY Christmas spirt has evolved into and I hope that sharing these moments with my son inspire him to do the same as he gets older. Merry Christmas to everyone and enjoy my interview with Santa from a few months ago! Thank you all for a great first year as The Beardcaster. I hope 2017 I can provide more entertaining and captivating content for everyone to enjoy!!! Fillis Nav-did.
Tonight we will be discussing all the FHL updates that Brett Strauss has been working on.

Michael Hulvey is our guest and he is here to tell us all about The Whisker Roundup. This event will be held in Leadington Missouri on April 2nd at The Bullpen Sports Grill. The charity will be Raising a Village which is a non-profit organization that help families with the day to day struggles.

Talking Beards-THE PODCAST edition
We are joined by the stupendous JENNCITY, former bass player for Kittie, Suicide City, Demilita, to talk about our friendship and inspiration. We have been friends for almost a decade and have spent countless hours traveling the country together. Over that time her exuberant personality and light started to seep into my being. There is an alluring essence to Jenn that is gravitating and you want to be around her and listen to what she has to say. She has such energy and such a positive outlook on life, and the world. We will talk about her music career and her current band JENNCITY, what life is up to with her and her uplifting messages. I hope that you enjoy this special episode of Talking Beards
What a fun day meandering among some interesting characters and bearded folk! I meet some of the most interesting people at these types of events, I guess that is why I try to go to as many as I can and meet the people! Wizard World Comic Con came to Cleveland March 17th-19th for it’s third appearance at the Cleveland Convention Center. There were a ton of comic, sci-fi, role-playing, pop-culture, and bearded fans in attendance-it truly was a sight to see. I went down Saturday afternoon with no expectations of what type of time I was going to have, I just wanted to slowly walk around and take it all in. There was a lot to take in from artists, content creators, costumed role players, comics, celebrities, games, books, toys, and just great people!
Like I said, I wanted to take my time and just slowly take it all in. There is so much to investigate and absorb at an event this large. I wasn’t able to take a lot in a few years ago when I went with my friend Bald Faced Josh and his daughter, and The Child. The kids were ready to go after 30 minutes and Josh and I couldn’t really check out all the greatness that Wizard World Comic Con had to offer. This time I was going to take advantage of going solo and take my sweet time and check out what I wanted to see!!! I wasn’t there to find anything specific, other than interesting bearded or mustached folk to chat with, but I found myself really drawn to the artists and illustrators this year. There were so many great ones on site, so much eye candy and talent. Though I was there to check out everything my main goal was to search out interesting people to converse with. One may ask how I may find someone interesting to talk to just by looking around. I say to them, “I am The Beardcaster, I search for the great beards, and behind those great beards are the interesting people I seek!!!”
The first beard I stumbled upon was my good friend Joshua Jenniges. You may remember him from episode 2 of The Beardcaster. One of the most amazing artists I have ever met, Josh is just one of those kind souls whose red beard pulls you in for friendship. He was there with his fiancé, Lydia, to help find some inspiration for work and for his personal growth. As the two of them walked around Josh ran across an artist by the name Mark Kistler, who had a PBS show called, "The Secret City", when he was a child. Josh told me that he was a real inspiration to him growing up and that he was part of why he became an artist. Make sure you listen to the podcast to hear that whole conversation!
The next bearded gentleman I ran across was a Alex Demko and his fiancé Bridget. It was good to see this bearded man who I have known for a coons age, as they say. Alex has recently embraced the bearded lifestyle and is currently sporting his longest beard I have ever known him to have. They were there to enjoy the sights and see what was going on in the world of Sci-Fi. Bridget was dressed in a classic Federation dress, which she wore very well! We talked about the different Star Treks that have been around and the re-boot series and which were our favorites. The discussion took a turn when I asked about her favorite bearded Trek character. This lead us into Lando and Chewbacca and their facial hair. She was an interesting one to talk to but it took her bearded man to help me find her fascinating story...
The highlight of my afternoon took place shortly after my discussion with Alex. I was slowly strolling down an isle when my eyes were drawn to something incredable, as if being called synchronistically by a strange force. I couldn't believe what my eyes brought forth, something so magical, so mysterious, so perfect. I almost didn't believe my eyes as they rest upon a table with a comic book laying on it titled Beardo. The magic didn't end there. As I scanned the table and let out an exclamation of shock, our eyes met. I hear the author, Dan Dougherty, say something along the lines of “WOW!” and the next thing you know…we are instantly friends!!!! There were two beards guys standing at a booth with a comic all about a bearded guy and the struggles of his life and how he copes and gets through each day, smiling ear to ear; we found each other. This was honestly a very surreal moment for me as I felt that this was some weird cosmic moment laid in my lap telling me I was on the right path. Dan had such charisma and his nice tight beard had me “Hello”. We spoke for awhile as the booth next to his just laughed that we were going nuts over the fact that we “found each other!” and we couldn't believe the coincidence and the fact I have never ran across his comic on-line. We had a great conversation and I purchased a copy of his Beardo comics which he so graciously signed and made a character of The Beardcaster!
The next person I ran into was a fella by the name of Steve Goetz. He was an easy grab, his large beard drew my eyes from afar, but as he got closer I knew this was the guys I needed to be talking to! He was wearing a Stranger Things t-shirt and a Machine Head beanie, a favorite show, and a favorite band of mine. I knew we would hit it off and have good conversation just because of his beard, hat , and shirt. We talked about him meeting Millie Bobbie Brown, "Eleven" from the ground breaking Netflix series "Stranger Things" and he showed me the picture he got with her. We speculated if she may have a beard in season two which is slated to premiere this October. Our conversation turned from Wizard World to Machine Head and our thoughts on the band and both our personal interactions. I tried to convince Steve that he needed to find the world of competitive bearding but he seemed a little reluctant. I assured him that he would be a welcome part of our family and he would defiantly bring good nature and possible winnings if he competed! I asked what his inspiration was for growing this great beard. I was caught off guard by his answer, it was an inspiration I had yet to hear from talking to someone when asking about why they grew. I guess you are going to have to listen to the podcast to hear what his answer was!!! ...I'm such a dick!!!
I walked by Andrew Heaths booth a few times before I mustered the confidence to talk to him about his artwork. Intimidating it was for both of us to meet I could tell, his artistic vision and his prints blew me away, something I just don't have! Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, Andrew has used his skills to make a career as a designer and illustrator and had some great examples of his screen printed art on display. Pulling many ideas from pop-culture there were recognizable images that we all could relate to from Dr. Who to Bob's Burgers and Star Wars to Star Trek. Check out Andrews designs by going to his website-I can almost bet you will find something you would like!
My last guest this episode is a man named Jerry Milani who works for the Wizard World Comic Con organization. I asked him some questions about how they got this massive monster of a traveling pop-culture convention going. We talked about some of the great celebrity guests they have booked and how they are trying to book more of a variety to expand the draw for these various Wizard World events. He told me about the involvement of Gene Simmons this year and how excited they are to expand this pop-culture fest by incorporating a music element into the mix. Though Jerry is a proud "bald faced" mortal, I had fun talking with him and he was a great source of information about Wizard World Comic Con! To hear more about what he said check out the podcast. Keep your eyes peeled for me at next years Wizard Con, come and find me and we will chat!!!
This year was by far more magical for me at the Wizard World Comic Con. I was able to see more and experience it like it should be. Take your time to take in the sights and absorb everything that is there. There is something for everyone and it is a place to be something special. It is a place you can be a superhero for the day, a real princess, or a galactic bounty hunter in search of a bearded guy to collect a handsome reward for. Wizard World is more than a traditional comic and pop-culture convention, it is an expression for many and a place to find a "family" and be a part of a community.
We have Ray Norcross on the Talking Beards show!!! Ray has started the livestream podcast called "Bearding Without Boarders" and has a handful of episode out for your enjoyment. Matt McLear is a bearded man. He has used his beard to become "internets" famous and used that fame to build one of the best podcasts out there, Beard Laws. We talk all about how he got started in the TikTok game and how that led to where he is currently at. He has been able to use his influence and podcast to reach many people and has used it to raise money for a cause that is close to his heart. We also talk about his direction and drive to grow his brand even bigger by getting on the Ellen show and being a New York Times best seller. We hope you enjoy this episode and please check out his site and Beard Laws on TikTok.
No Shave November has been running strong for well over a decade and has raised in excess of 10 million dollars in that time. Started in 2009 in memory of Matthew Hill, the movement was spawned by his family to help raise awareness and funds towards cancer research. While Matthew was still alive and battling colon cancer, his family had already adopted the no shaving movement in November and had taken all the money they had saved from not buying razors, shaving creams, and even haircuts and donated that money to various types of cancer researches. The whole No Shave November concept is not only about growing one’s hair out but a way of appreciating that we still have the ability to grow hair, since chemotherapy usually causes patients to loose theirs. Now-No Shave November is celebrated world wide and each November participants progress is shared via social media with the hashtag #noshavenovember. This is not only a "mens only" type of event. Women can also show their support and raise awareness but not shaving as well and are often encouraged to stop shaving their legs and putting that money they save on hair car products and razors to a good cause.
On this episode of Talking Beards, Scott is joined by Matt McLear of Beard Laws. Aaron was on his way back home from Vancouver where he attended the BC Beards By The Border event, https://fb.me/e/3oGr0hX3C . They boys gave their best advice to those wanting to participate in the No Shave November festivities this year. the guys from Talking Beards and Beard Laws have extensive experience in "award winning" beard growing and are certified to give you the best information to help you grow to your potential! We hope you learned a lot about this wonderful charity movement and picked up some great new tips for growing and maintaining a luxurious #beard and #mustache ! We hope you enjoy-feel free to reach out to us by emailing us at talkingbeards1@gmail.com with any comments or to update us on your competition or charity event.

Beards for Beasts is only a few weeks away so The Beardcaster, and special guest co-host Anthony "The Stache" Fontes, sat down with the Steel City Beard and Mustache Club president Andrew Miscowiec to get the lowdown on the 4th year of this fantastic event. Held at the beautiful Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, PA the event is once again benefiting the Animal Rescue League & Wildlife Shelter and Hello Bully charities.
The boys met up at Suzie's Dogs in Boardman Ohio to discuss the upcoming event and enjoy some fine weiners. Beards and Suzie's have a history as Anthony and Suzie's in Youngstown have collaborated in the past to host a couple of The Rust Belt Whisker Society's beard competitions, so we wanted to give back to those who have given to us. Entering what appeared to be a newly built establishment I fought my way though the hordes of Browns and Steelers fans watching both games on the multiple big screen tv's in the venue. I was greeted by Drew, who as any Steelers fan, was 16 beers into his Sunday football afternoon and being all crazy. I soon realized the Drew I sat with was a bald faced mortal and quickly scooted across the bar to the Drew I knew, the man with the red chops. Shortly after we are joined by Anthony and we all began to catch up on what was going on in the world of bearding. Giving us barely any time to breath, Ariana, our server, attacked us with all the great things Suzie's had to offer. A luxurious menu of over 50 possible toppings were presented to us with different "dog" and bun configurations that were possible. The choices were tough, there was some confusion, fear and tears were had but our AMAZING server Ariana was there to save the day. As any typical time I go out to eat, I find I need to get in the head of the person serving me. I need to achieve confidence that I know that they are legit and that they know their craft and their home. I needed the confidence of an employee to make me lust after their weiners in a place like this. I needed to know I was going to be taken care of...and taken care of WE all were. She made skilled suggestions to all of us just like she knew what each of us needed in our lives at that specific moment. I became terrified with all the options that were before me, would I choose right or wrong, I didn't know. Ariana walked me from the ledge, she gave me hope, it was as if she looked deep into my soul and knew the hot dog I needed in my life... and it was delivered. It was pure ecstasy as I bit into that dog. The Sloppy Joes made love to my teeth as the pickle jalapeno's caressed my tastebuds. The Fritos that were on top were like sexy lingerie showing the curves and valleys of this hotdog that was about to be devoured by waiting mouth. This custom made dog hit the spot- beautifully delicious and fulfilling in every way imaginable, I was in heaven. My friends were also in a blissful paradise much like my own but I needed to get back to reality and remember why I was here. I needed to get the clouds from my head all cleared and get back on the path of talking about Beards For Beasts 4 with Drew and Anthony. It was as if this hot dog wanted to de-rail the interview and the event rendering me powerless to broadcast to the masses about helping the poor animals of Pittsburgh...
Beards do not know weakness. Our beards came together to overcome the deliciousness that was trying to destroy our message. We were able to pull ahead and begin this wonderful conversation you are about to hear. This might have been my favorite hang to date. I love these dudes. They both have great hearts and want to help their communities and clubs and the social awareness about beards. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed the hotdogs!!! Please support the local businesses in your neighborhood and we hope to see you in Pittsburgh on October 29th!!!
Jeremy Smith, president of the North American Competitive Beard and Mustache Association and vice-president of the Spokane Beard and Mustache club, is our guest. We talk about their upcoming event, the 8th Annual Epic Beard Competition. We also discuss next years Great American Beard and Mustache Championships which will be in Salt Lake City Utah. As usual we cover all the latest news in the facial hair scene reported to us by the BS Button Bulletin Board and we had fun playing trivia with prizes supplied by Honest Amish.
Tonight we have freestyle extraordinaire Eric Brooks on the show. He is a real "OG" of the beard community and we wanted to dive deep into how he became interested and where his journey has led him. We ill also discuss his amazing artistic ability and how you too could get one of his amazing pieces of work.

Tonight on Talking Beards, we are thrilled to delve into the exciting world of competitive facial hair growth. However, our focus will be on more than just the competition itself. We are honored to have Mr. Josh Grinthorr Druin, a member of the Derby City Whisker Club and the charity beneficiary of the competition, joining us to share his inspiring story.
Josh has faced numerous challenges due to his kidney troubles, and tonight we will have the privilege of hearing about his journey.
Talking Beards, both the club and the podcast, has partnered with the Facial Hair League to bring you a truly unique online beard competition. The event will be broadcast live on May 27th and hosted by Talking Beards. All proceeds raised will go towards supporting Josh Grinthorr Druin and his medical expenses. As a valued member of the Derby City Whisker Club, Josh has been an integral part of the facial hair community, and we are honored to have the opportunity to give back to him in his time of need.
Brad Petrinec joined us to talk all about Detroit's Sixth Annual Circus of Whiskers. This event is hosted by Detroit’s favorite facial hair club, the Murder City Facial Hair Crew, and is a charity event to raise money for the Detroit Animal Welfare Group. The Circus of Whiskers has become a tradition in Detroit and is a facial hair competition that is held at the Tangent Gallery.

EP.92-Kellen Roggenbuck, bearded author
01:16:56
Author Kellen Roggenbuck was our guest on this weeks Talking Beards show. Author of two children books, My Dad Has a Beard and Great Beards of History, Kellen talks about what inspired him to write these awesome books. We start off the show with listener submissions to the BS Button Beard Bulletin Board, competition news and some fun trivia with great prizes complements of Mudcat Whiskers. This what a jam packed episode-we hope you enjoy and think about becoming a subscriber to the show and to the podcast.
Rutledge Wood is mostly known for his work with NASCAR on NBC, Top Gear America, Lost in Transmission, and Hyperdrive on Netflix. Rutledge talks about his car collection, how he got involved doing what he does, and his older brother Tiger and his decision to go the way of the golf cart over becoming a professional golfer. We had a blast with him and he is such a down to earth guy and a lot of fun to chat with. We hope you enjoy this super special, fun, and candid look into "Americas Sweetheart".
Master beard grower and competitor Chad Roberts joins me this episode to talk about being a world famous actor and being in the elite group of such famous actors such as George Clooney or Tom Hanks. Chad keeps his ego in check and shares his story and his beard and the formation of the RVA Beard League over 62 years ago. Chad has found himself involved with many local charity activities in the Richmond Virginia area giving back to the community and trying to shed positive light on the bearding and mustache lifestyle. We talk about the history of the freestyle beard style and the development of some of his iconic freestyle designs. Discussion of his grooming processes and products were shared and his inspirations for some of the spectacular creations. Chad is an All-Star in the bearding community and goes above and beyond for his local community and his work in "secret" governmental programs. I consider Chad to be one of the fathers at the fore front of the facial hair movement going on right now. Check out these following links to get more information on things that Chad and I discussed.
Our friend from England, Michael Legge, recently shaved his massive beard off to help raise money for charity. Aaron and I discuss what "obstacles" he may cross as being a newly shaved woman. We pull a few examples from experience and share our thoughts on what it is like right after you shave a glorious beard!

This years Toys for Tots toy collection was out of this world!!! We collected a record breaking amount of toys between The Beards of the Old Northwest, Rustbelt Whisker Society, and the Steel City Beard and Mustache Club at Camelot Lanes in Boardman, Ohio. The only unfortunate thing that happened that evening was this boneheaded podcaster didn't hook up his recorder properly and I lost all my interviews with everyone from the evening. I am such an idiot! To make up for the lost footage I found a fun chat session with Patrick Quinn and Jeff Bittner with an added splash of Crystal Davis. Hope you enjoy our crazy night at the Super 8!

Annoying things guys with beards hear...

Most people don't have a filter when it comes to communicating wit a man with a '"oversized" beard. They feel like they have won the right to just "blurt" out whatever they are feeling. Aaron and Scott talk about all of the "annoying" comments they have heard people say to them over the years. We know you can all relate and know the struggle!!!

Covid 19 has really been wreaking havoc on the world. In these unsure times a lot of things are changing quickly around us and we need to adjust and adapt just as fast. We discuss the growing list of competitions that are canceling and our guest, Dr. Adam Causgrove of The American Mustache Institute joins us to talk what we can do to help. Enjoy the show and share with your friends!!!
As you may notice Episode 34 is missing. Actually, there are 2 finished versions, Ep.34 and Ep34.3, that will probably not be released due to sensitivity issues, but the content of the episodes was about the loss of two young men and the impact it had on us. Bald faced Josh and I used the podcast as a way to express our feelings and get out much needed thoughts and emotions. What came across was very heartfelt and genuine and it helped us both cope with what we were both experiencing. Maybe someday these episodes will be released...but until then, if you need to hear them, email me at scott@thebeardcaster.com and I may consider sending them to you.
Episode 35 was an part of a 5 hour recording session Josh and I were having one night to blow off steam and talk shit out. What this episode ended up being was all about television sitcoms that we grew up with. We covered some late 70's shows through the 80's and into the 90's. We also talked about early women in these shows that we had the hots for. There isn't much beard and mustache in this sucker, other than the one I have, so I hope this doesn't disappoint the listeners. Josh and I needed this episode as part of our healing process and I am sure there will be many more of these random episodes in the coming months as we deal with many things ahead.
Mental health is an important topic to me as I have dealt with seasonal depression and other states of dealing with depression through difficult times. It is important to reach out in times of need to a mental health professional or speak to your general physician. Sometimes talking to a councilor may be all you need to help you deal with issues you may have in your life. Others may need mild to severe doses of anti-depressants to help them cope with a chemical imbalance they may have but those should only be dispensed by a licensed physician. A tragic loss can trigger deep depression and confusing feelings in adults and young adults and needs to be properly dealt with. Talking with close friends can help, sharing your feelings with a parent or family member can also make you feel better. Getting your feelings out is key to helping get past difficult moments in life, seek help if you are having issues and aren't able to cope... please get help.
Women in the competitive field of beards and mustaches have to work extra hard to make an impact. Rachel goes above and beyond with some of her elaborate creations. Thank you to everyone who came out to the Lake Tavern's Beard and Mustache Competition and help raise money for Isaac, feel free to click to his Go Fund Me page. You can see some pictures from this event by clicking here. We had a fun time and raised some $$$ for some people in need because that is WHAT WE DO!!! Now about this interview...
We introduce Rachel. She is a lady who likes the beards. She likes the beards sooo much...she creates her own. This is tales of science fiction and folklore...John Henry and Paul Bunyan can't craft a beard of this magnitude!!! Rachel belongs to a beard club out Ohio called BEARDS OF THE OLD NORTHWEST. She is a "Whiskerina", a woman who participates in beard and mustache competitions. These women construct "beards" out of anything they can get their hands on. They design a theme and build a beard from scratch. Rachel is a newer participant in the world of bearding, but she is bringing her "A" game...and thankfully not her Team. Listen and learn about how a woman participates in a male dominated, beard and mustache, competition.
Waffen Der Whiskerr Oil is the main sponsor of my program. They are my sponsor because I believe in the product and the person behind the product. So many uses, so many scents, choose one for yourself!!!

Tonight on Talking Beards we will Chris Battenberg from Reno Nevada. Chris is part of The Altrustic American and they are puting on the "Best in the West, Beard Festival". This event will be held in Wingfield Park in Beautiful Reno Nevada on June 18th. You don't want to miss this one of a kind event, they will have food trucks, vendors, beer and of course the world famous beard competition! All proceeds will benefit "The Altruistic American." TAA will raise awareness of mental health issues through educational events, community initiatives, programs targeted at vulnerable people experiencing the common symptoms of loneliness and isolation, interactive forums, and public awareness campaigns that will highlight the social stigma, prejudice, marginalization, and discrimination experienced by those dealing with ill mental health. We recognize there is a huge gap in services for those falling through the cracks of existing agencies and local organizations. As mental health advocates we will stand up for those who do not have a voice reminding everyone that there is light, healing and hope throughout this journey.
