08 Apr 20225 Bold Predictions for 202200:20:33

Every year at this time, there’s optimism. A fresh start for all 30 MLB teams. But for the Texas Rangers, some of that optimism may be justified. Coming off an off-season that saw the team splurge on top free agents, as well as improving the roster in general, the Rangers are set to begin the 2022 season with higher expectations than 2021, yet still not reaching the point of contention. That looks to be on the 2023 agenda. This and more on the newest episode of Talkin Texas Rangers.

It won't be long before the Texas Rangers are packing up the equipment truck and driving out to Surprise. We've waited a long time for baseball to come back, and it seems like the start of a new season is getting closer every day. Expectations for the Rangers in 2023 will be higher than in seasons past with a fully revamped pitching staff, not to mention another year of Corey Seager and Marcus Semien and several highly-rated prospects knocking on the door. There's a lot to look forward to, and here are five things I'm excited to watch when players begin to report to Surprise.

14 Feb 2025Who will Be the Rangers Next Closer00:19:09

The closer role is always a hot topic in Major League Baseball—especially for a Bruce Bochy-managed team. This season, the Rangers head into spring training with questions swirling around who will lock down the 9th inning. While some teams are opting for a committee approach, it remains to be seen if Bochy will change his philosophy.

In this episode, we break down the four in-house candidates fighting to become Texas’ next closer:

  • Josh Sborz: Electric stuff and postseason experience, but ongoing health concerns could impact his availability.
  • Jon Gray: Longtime starter with a fastball-slider combo perfect for high-leverage situations. Could a shift to the bullpen be in the cards?
  • Chris Martin: Steady veteran presence and the most career saves among the group. His consistency might be exactly what the Rangers need.
  • Marc Church: The intriguing young arm with huge strikeout potential, but command and a spot on the 26-man roster are lingering questions.

Join us as we discuss Bochy’s bullpen strategies, how these pitchers might fit, and whether the Rangers will shake up their approach. If you love talking baseball, pitching, and all things bullpen strategy, you won’t want to miss this. Subscribe to stay updated on all the latest Rangers news, and share your thoughts in the comments—who’s your pick for the next Rangers closer?

14 Apr 2023Texas Rangers Lose Odorizzi for the Season00:17:46

Jake Odorizzi was the first move the Texas Rangers made in the offseason to improve their pitching staff. He was traded for initially to join the starting rotation. As the offseason went on and the Rangers signed Jacob deGrom, Andrew Heaney, and Nathan Eovaldi he was moved into the swing role of long man/spot starter. Spring Training got started and he started feeling arm fatigue and was not able to ever take the mound in a spring training game. He was then moved from the bullpen to the 60-day IL to start the season. It was announced that he will remain on the IL for the remainder of the season. We talk this and more on the latest episode of The Talkin Texas Rangers podcast.

16 Nov 2022Predicting the 2023 Opening Day Rotation00:18:17

There’s no doubt quality starting pitching was one of the Ranger’s biggest downfalls in 2022. The Texas Rangers ranked 22nd out of 30 MLB teams with a cumulative 4.22 ERA. Additionally, Texas’ pitching issued the 4th most walks across the league and placed 24th in WHIP with a 1.34.

The Rangers haven’t had a winning season since 2017 which has led to growing frustration from fans and ownership alike. This is a big reason why Texas Ranger’s owner Ray Davis has given GM Chris Young the green light to increase the payroll for 2023.

Texas only has $80 million guaranteed for 2023, which is over $60 million less than last year. This means management has 60$ million to spend this offseason to match 2022’s payroll, not including any extra money the Rangers could likely spend.

With a star-studded free agency class and money to spend, the Texas Rangers are primed to make another huge splash this offseason. That being said, this episode I will give my prediction for the 2023 Opening Day rotation.

02 Jul 2024The Nathan Eovaldi Dilemma00:21:35

In this episode, we dive deep into the Texas Rangers' recent ups and downs. After an exhilarating 11-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, the Rangers have snapped their six-game losing streak and gained some much-needed momentum. Despite this win, the defending champions find themselves eight games behind the Seattle Mariners for the top spot in the AL West and equally distanced from a Wild Card position.

We explore the trade rumors swirling around the team as the July deadline approaches. Will the Rangers be sellers, with key players like Andrew Heaney and Nathan Eovaldi potentially on the move? Eovaldi, in particular, has been a standout since signing a two-year deal after the 2022 season. With his consistent performance and playoff prowess, he could be a hot commodity if made available.

Join us as we discuss Eovaldi's future with the Rangers, including the possibility of an extension, and what it means for the team's plans moving forward. Could the Rangers be looking at another rebuild, or will they push through with their current roster in hopes of a late-season comeback? Tune in to get all the insights and stay updated on the latest Texas Rangers' developments.

17 Jan 2025Rangers Have One Last Gaping Hole to Fill00:13:43

After a stunning World Series victory in 2023, the Texas Rangers faced a sobering reality in 2024, missing the postseason with just 78 wins. Now, the team is determined to return to contention, making bold offseason moves to reshape their roster.

In this episode, we break down the Rangers' key acquisitions, including power bats Joc Pederson and Jake Burger, the underrated addition of Kyle Higashioka, and the re-signing of Nathan Eovaldi to solidify their rotation. But the biggest splash? A complete bullpen makeover with additions like Chris Martin, Hoby Milner, and others.

However, the team still has one glaring hole: the closer’s role. With Kirby Yates and David Robertson still on the free-agent market, can the Rangers bring back one of their former stars or land another experienced option like Tanner Scott or Carlos Estevez? We discuss the importance of locking down this critical position and how it could make or break their chances in 2025.

💡 Join us as we analyze the moves, highlight remaining needs, and debate whether these changes are enough to crown Texas the team to beat in the AL West. Don’t miss this deep dive into the Rangers’ offseason strategy and their path to redemption!

23 Nov 2023Resigning Jordan Montgomery will Cost The Rangers Something00:18:52

The news came out on Sunday morning just before the NFL games that Aaron Nola will be returning to Philadelphia for the long term. The 30-year-old right-hander agreed to seven-year contract worth $172 million. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Nola met with other teams and turned down more money to stay in Philadelphia. He chose to stay with a team that was in the World Series in 2022 and a win away from making it back to the World Series in 2023.

This choice by Nola could lead to a certain free-agent left-hander also choosing to stay with the team that he finished the season with. Now that Texas has an idea of what Montgomery is worth on the free agent market would it be smart to bring him back for those years and at that cost?

28 Jan 2023Texas Rangers were better in 2022 than many people realize00:27:14

In this episode of Talkin Texas Rangers, we'll be discussing the Texas Rangers and their 2022 season. As someone who watches a ton of Ranger games, I can tell you that 2022 was so much more enjoyable than the year before. 2021 was a display of bad baseball, especially the last few months of the season. It got hard to watch, even for the most loyal of fans.

21 Jun 2024Division Title Shot Slipping Away00:16:01

In this episode, we break down the Texas Rangers' missed opportunity to close the gap in the AL West against the division-leading Seattle Mariners. Entering the weekend series, the Rangers were just a few games below .500 and had a real chance to make a statement. Instead, they were swept by the Mariners, extending Seattle's lead in the division to 9.0 games. To make matters worse, the Rangers followed this disappointing performance with a crushing 14-2 loss to the New York Mets on Monday night.

We discuss the implications of this series and what it means for the Rangers' playoff hopes. While it's true that baseball is a long season and anything can happen, the road ahead looks challenging with upcoming series against tough opponents like the Mets, Royals, Brewers, and Orioles. The Rangers' health issues and their poor start against Seattle this season compound the difficulty of their situation.

Tune in as we analyze what the Rangers need to do to turn things around and how the seven crucial games against the Mariners in September could determine their fate. Despite the current setbacks, we explore the glimmers of hope and potential strategies for the Rangers to get back in the race.

04 Nov 2022Can the Texas Rangers Win the World Series in 202300:33:52

The Texas Rangers have a lot to needs to fill before the next season. This includes pitching and offensive. While the Rangers were disappointing this season, there's still a chance the Rangers could see themselves as World Series champions.

Most experts won’t pick the Texas Rangers to win the 2023 World Series when they make their preseason predictions. Despite the hiring of three-time World Series champion manager Bruce Bochy and the expectation that Texas will invest significant money in free agency for the second offseason in a row, the Rangers still have a long way to go before the rest of the league takes them seriously as a contender.

However, we’ve seen multiple teams in the past several years respond to a losing season with a World Series championship in the following year. In fact, since the playoffs expanded in 1995, five teams have won a championship after finishing with a record below .500 the year before.

04 May 2022This 1 Obvious Change Could Make The Texas Rangers Better Right Now00:15:27

It can be difficult to admit failure. No one would be shocked if the Texas Rangers finally realized Kole Calhoun just isn’t viable any longer as a starting outfielder in the major leagues.

Calhoun, signed to a one-year, $5 million contract during the off-season, isn’t providing any value to the Rangers right now. In fact, he’s providing negative value, at -0.3 bWAR, from his post in right field. A player who used to routinely beat up on Texas, the 34-year-old just isn’t that player anymore.

05 May 2023Will Smith Being the Closer Makes the Best Sense for Texas Rangers00:15:26

In a surprising move, the Texas Rangers have announced that Will Smith will take over as their new closer, replacing Jose Leclerc, who has struggled to keep the role. The decision comes after Leclerc blew two consecutive save opportunities, leading to losses for the team.

Will Smith is a seasoned reliever with a track record of success in the major leagues. He has spent most of his career as a closer, and his experience in high-pressure situations makes him a natural fit for the role. Smith has a career ERA of 3.56 and has saved 95 games, including 37 saves in 2021 with the Atlanta Braves.

14 Jun 2024Corey Seager's Injury More Serious Than We Thought00:16:18

This week, we dive into the details of Seager's injury scare and what it means for the Rangers moving forward. Both Seager and manager Bruce Bochy downplayed the severity, with Seager feeling "a little twinge" and Bochy stating the move was precautionary. However, given Seager's injury history and the Rangers' bad luck in 2024, fans should keep a close eye on this situation.

24 May 2022Eight Meaningful Games for the Texas Rangers00:20:12

The Rangers are two games into their second* longest road trip of the season. They’ve split the first two games of the trip, and play two more against the Astros this weekend before heading to the West Coast for two games at Anaheim and four games against the A’s.

* It was going to be tied for the longest road trip of the season, but since the lockout scrambled the early season scheduling, the Rangers play a road game in Miami on the Thursday after the All Star Game before heading to the West Coast for ten games. Thanks, Manfred.

23 Feb 2023A Healthy Mitch Garver is a Key Part of The Texas Rangers Offense00:24:45

As the start of spring training draws near, the Texas Rangers are hoping that the 2023 season will be the season the team returns to the playoffs. Following a massive spending spree on pitching this offseason which included adding star Jacob DeGrom and Nathan Eovaldi, but failed to add another bat to the lineup. While they didn't add another bat through free agency, the return of a healthy Mitch Garver to this lineup is just as good as any other move the team could've made.

13 Dec 2023Texas Rangers Leave Winter Meetings With Nothing00:19:16

In this insightful episode, we delve into the Texas Rangers' offseason strategy amidst financial uncertainties. Fresh off their euphoric first World Series win, a significant achievement capping 52 years of effort, the Rangers are now facing a challenging offseason ahead of the 2024 season. The episode explores the Rangers' cautious approach in building their roster, contrasting it with the aggressive moves of teams like the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays.

We discuss the Rangers' sole major signing so far - reliever Kirby Yates for one year at $4.5 million - and their hesitancy to make further big moves. Ken Rosenthal's insights on the Athletic suggest the Rangers are considering two paths: possibly retaining Clayton Kershaw or exploring second-tier free-agent starters like Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, or Michael Wacha. A key factor in their restrained approach is the looming "financial uncertainty," mainly due to the potential loss of the media rights deal with Bally Sports. This episode examines the implications of these financial challenges and how they're shaping the Rangers' strategy for constructing their 2024 roster

27 Oct 2022Rangers Hire Bruce Bochy as the new Manager00:19:15

The 2022 season has concluded for the Rangers, and while it wasn't the greatest year for Rangers baseball, it did have some good moments. Marcus Semien continued to grow, hitting is slowly improving. In hopes of making 2023 the year of the Rangers, new management has been brought in with Bruce Bochy joining as manager. 19 Jul 2024Rangers Struggle to Develop Homegrown Pitchers00:22:26

In this episode, we dive deep into the Texas Rangers' postseason success and their persistent struggles in developing homegrown pitching talent. Since 2010, the Rangers have notched the fifth most postseason victories (33) and the sixth best playoff winning percentage (.559) in MLB. During this stretch, they've played in 59 playoff games, showcasing their dominance on the field. Yet, of these games, only eight have been started by pitchers they drafted, developed, and called up without ever touching another franchise.

But why is there still concern about their developmental struggles despite their success with veteran pitchers? We'll break down the importance of having young, controllable, and effective starting pitchers, drawing comparisons to the impacts of Paul Skenes in Pittsburgh and Clayton Kershaw in LA. Tune in as we analyze the Rangers' unique approach and the potential long-term implications for their pitching staff.

05 Jun 2024Jack Leiter's Struggles: Another Rangers' Draft Mistake?00:15:48

This week we dive deep into the struggles of Jack Leiter, the highly-touted pitching prospect for the Texas Rangers. After a disappointing home debut with a horrendous 16.39 ERA in just 9.1 innings, Leiter's future in the major leagues looks uncertain. Despite his dominance in the minors, Leiter has yet to replicate that success at the big league level. With the Rangers sending him back to the minors, fans are left wondering if he will ever fulfill his potential.

Join us as we compare Leiter's current trajectory with past Rangers' draft busts, such as Dillon Tate, Casey Kiker, and the infamous 2010 draft picks Jake Skole and Kellin Deglan. We also explore what could have been with potential All-Stars like Christian Yelich, Aaron Sanchez, and Nick Castellanos. Can Leiter turn things around and avoid joining this list of draft failures? 14 Jun 2022Lets Rank Potential 2022 All-Stars Representing The Texas Rangers00:23:24

A lot of money was invested in this season’s Texas Rangers roster: a whopping grand total of $500+ million went on the ledgers of owners Ray Davis and Bob Simpson. And while the Rangers won the off-season, the results have not been quite as good as people might have expected over two months into the 2022 season.

A roughly average team (which is what the Texas Rangers are at the moment) won’t produce many All-Stars at the end of the day, but the one (or ones) who could be representing the Rangers in Los Angeles in July aren’t necessarily the ones you would’ve expected heading into 2022.

Fan balloting has officially opened for the Midsummer Classic (vote now for your Rangers! ), so let’s rank the potential Texas Rangers representatives to Dodger Stadium next month.

We also give our weekly Who's Hot, Who's Not list and give our thoughts on a wild and crazy victory on Sunday.

20 Dec 2024Rangers Making Moves this Winter00:16:57

The Texas Rangers entered this offseason facing a severe bullpen shortage after numerous relievers departed in free agency. While familiar names like José Leclerc, Kirby Yates, José Ureña, and David Robertson remain on the market, none have been seriously linked to a return to Arlington. But on Wednesday, FanSided’s Robert Murray reported that the Rangers took their first step in rebuilding the ‘pen by signing reliever Jacob Webb to a one-year deal.

In this video, we break down what Webb brings to the table. We’ll cover his recent performance with the Baltimore Orioles, where he consistently delivered better-than-league-average results. His pitching arsenal—featuring a four-seam fastball, sweeper, and changeup—kept hitters off balance, with some pitches limiting opponents to a batting average as low as .125.

This move is the latest in a flurry of transactions by the Rangers, who just added Nathan Eovaldi and pulled off a surprise trade for Jake Burger. Clearly, the organization isn’t satisfied with their 78-win 2024 season and is determined to improve. While the bullpen rebuild isn’t complete, adding Webb is an encouraging first step toward stabilizing a unit that ended last season near the bottom of the league in ERA. Stay tuned as we discuss what’s next for the Rangers and how they can continue to strengthen their bullpen heading into 2025.

11 May 2022The Rangers Are Turning a Corner00:15:02

The Texas Rangers had quite a turnaround of events over the past week. Last weekend, they took two out of three against the defending World Series Champion Atlanta Braves. Then, they swept the Philadelphia Phillies in a two-game series.

What has me and other fans excited is that the starting pitchers seem to be really getting deep into games now and the relief pitching doesn’t have to carry the load. Speaking of the bullpen, they’ve been really good too lately.

06 Jul 2023Rangers Make Splash with Trade for Aroldis Chapman00:29:38

In this episode, we take a deep dive into the exciting trade that just went down between my beloved Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals. The Rangers have acquired none other than Aroldis Chapman to bolster their bullpen as they gear up for a crucial four-game series against the Houston Astros. As a die-hard Rangers fan, this trade has huge implications for our AL West division hopes.

We'll break down the details of the trade, which saw the Rangers send left-handed pitcher Cole Ragans and minor league outfielder Roni Cabrera to the Royals in exchange for Chapman. It's a move that has caught the attention of fans and analysts alike, and we'll explore the reasons behind the Rangers' decision to make this trade.

13 Dec 2022Are The Rangers Moving Toward a Six Man Rotation00:21:24

It has been quite an offseason for the Texas Rangers. GM Chris Young (CY) and owner Ray Davis made it clear that they were going to enhance the rotation every chance they got, and they have not disappointed.

To go alongside Jon Gray, the Rangers have added Jake Odorizzi via a trade with the Atlanta Braves, resigned Martin Perez via the qualifying offer, and signed free agents Jacob deGrom and Andrew Heaney. This could set them up with a strong six-man rotation, something many teams have begun to transition to.

25 Apr 2022Rangers Hitting a New Low00:16:47

Well, that was a very long week of watching AL West teams shine. The Texas Rangers got slaughtered by the Angels and the Mariners this week and it’s nothing to be happy about if you’re a fan. With all the money that we sunk into the offense this past offseason, you would think we could average more than 2 runs a game. We discuss this and more in the latest episode of Talkin Texas Rangers.

07 Jun 2022The Texas Rangers Are In The Playoff Hunt Entering June00:16:04

On Tuesday, the Texas Rangers played the Tampa Bay Rays at Globe Life Field in the final game of May, capping off a 17-10 month of May, their winningest month since 2019.

The Rangers defeated Tampa 3-0 in that game. With the win, the Rangers improved to 24-24 and got to .500 for the first time this season. The win also improved the Rangers’ odds at securing one of the three wild card spots in the AL, as they got within two games. Now, they enter the month of June in as good of a position as they’ve been in some time.

Texas, which started this season absolutely slow, is now starting to turn the corner as they are playing good baseball. Many people predicted the Rangers to finish near the bottom of baseball once again this season, albeit improved, and the sluggish start only reaffirmed those suspicions. Now, though? They’re flirting with a playoff spot! But can they sustain this current streak of success?

31 Jan 2025Rangers Secure New TV Deal with Victory+00:15:08

After nearly two years of uncertainty, the Texas Rangers have finally secured their own broadcasting solution—introducing the Rangers Sports Network! This move comes after Bally Sports Southwest’s parent company, Diamond Sports Group, filed for bankruptcy, leading to financial instability and limited spending for the team.

Now, with deals in place—including a new streaming partnership with Victory+ and agreements with AT&T U-Verse, DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, and Spectrum—the Rangers control their own destiny in the broadcast world.
