09 Dec 2021Denise R. Russo – Finding the Center of Your Purpose00:24:43

Denise R. Russo is Global VP, Head of Customer Enablement & Readiness at SAP for CE&X Success Centers; Executive Coach; Leadership Expert; and Forbes Contributor.

In this episode Lauren and Denise discuss:

Finding and understanding your deeper purpose as a leader and in the everyday moments

Leveraging HR and coaching skills to support customers and put your feet in the shoes of those you are serving

The Great Resignation and how you can determine what you really want in the next phase of your career

The concept of ikigai (生き甲斐), pronounced ee-kee-gah-ee, which means "reason for being.”

Key takeaways:

As a coach and leader, it’s important to be a good listener; ask good questions; both know and show others the way; and be able to relate to other’s thoughts/ideas even if they differ from your own.

It’s up to you to determine the things that matter most to you and you should evaluate the conditions around you to achieve growth.

You can always pursue a new path and take the steps forward with the option to turn back.

Drawing on ikigai can help you feel centered and define your purpose based on four elements in the work setting – things that you are good at; things that you love doing; things that change the world; and things you can get paid for.

Life is all about continuous learning.” – Denise Russo

Diversity is what makes us different, inclusion is what makes us the same… at the end, it should be around how do we belong and how do we belong on this Earth and in this world together.” – Denise Russo

There’s a difference between being the best in the world and being best for the world and I’m hoping that my legacy will be that I can be known as somebody who is for the world and for people” – Denise Russo

23 Sep 2021Jennifer Petriglieri – Couples that Work00:30:22

Jennifer Petriglieri is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at INSEAD

and Author of Couples That Work

In this episode Lauren and Jennifer discuss:

The three transitions that dual-career couples go through and how couples can work together to overcome associated obstacles and achieve success in both their careers and personal lives

Key takeaways:

During the first stage of transition at the beginning of a couple’s relationship (generally within five years), partners must make tough decisions to combine their lives and careers.

Couples who make decisions and do things with intent will be better able to fit their lives together and make it work.

Couples in equal priority careers should have discussions about boundaries – this helps to make decisions, reduce uncertainty, and decrease stress.

Throughout the second stage of transition (mid-career), couples need to shift their model of support to a loving push to help their partner determine what they really want.

It’s important for individuals to try new things/get their feet wet before making final career decisions.

When couples reframe thinking from you versus me to focusing on positives and negatives for both individuals, they can get everything on the table.

If there’s always a loser when there’s a winner, this will not work well in relationships.”

  • Key traits of successful CEOs
  • Importance of working for an organization where you feel comfortable
  • Strategies to overcoming challenges in male-dominated industries

  • Focus on finding mentors, supporters, and sponsors – someone who will give you guidance on your performance or improvement areas (interpersonal or hard skills).
  • Be active and prepared during meetings to showcase what you know and what you are made of to gain promoters.

How individuals can exhibit their passions both in and out of the workplace

Key takeaways:

Customers expect leaders to be approachable and human; take care of them; know their needs; and make them feel valued.

To enhance the customer experience, leaders and employees must remain aware and appreciate the diversity of others to ensure they don’t fall behind.

Having a mentor will help you to build confidence, believe in yourself, know your brand, and define your purpose – you can build upon that to network and grow from individuals within your own company.

By learning the political ways of an organization, the systems and the people, you can leverage your own knowledge and experience to show and tell how your insights are valuable.

Leaders should be in tune with and encourage their employees’ unique needs, this helps build trust and loyalty that leads to employees doing customer experience right, even when the boss isn’t looking.

Women should speak up tactfully when interacting with men who treat them differently in the workplace – by doing it in the right way where people aren’t defensive and can even hear you as helpful.

11 Nov 2021Karen Tisdell – Optimizing Your LinkedIn Strategy00:29:10

Karen Tisdell is a LinkedIn profile writer, expert, and trainer.

In this episode Lauren and Karen discuss:

Optimizing your LinkedIn strategy for a job search

How to use LinkedIn while employed for personal brand strategy, networking, etc.

Your digital footprint and why it is important to employers

Best practices for accepting connection requests

Key takeaways:

Having a great LinkedIn profile is foundational for, if and how people think of you.

Be proactive in reaching out to people and connecting with them; personalize your invitations to connect with a short message.

Be selective when accepting connections. Connect with people who are doing what you want to do, who know people that you would want to know, and who are in your community of stakeholders.

Make sure that you have a great profile by including a headshot as profile photo, background banner, and keywords throughout based on job advertisements.

Provide a synopsis of your current and past professional experience, be sure to explain what you enjoy about your position.

Scroll through your newsfeed every day; like and comment on as many posts as you can.

If we think of ourselves in our job search as a product, people are doing their research, and LinkedIn ranks really highly. It is that important.” – Karen Tisdell

Nobody wants to be the person or the friend that only calls when they need something or want something from you. It’s so important to ensure that you are constantly looking at how you show up on platform and how you develop those relationships … the better the friendships and relationships that I have around me, the luckier I am in my career and my success.” – Karen Tisdell

01 Jul 2021Dawn Graham - Future Proof Your Career00:30:00

Dawn is host of the SiriusXM radio show, Dr. Dawn on Careers, Author of Switchers: How Smart Professionals Change Careers - and Seize Success, and Director of the Wharton Career Center.

In this episode Lauren and Dawn discuss:

  •  What trends should leaders focus on in order to future proof their career
  •  How the hiring process works and what goes on in the mind of a hiring manager.
  •  Strategies for having a successful job search
  •  Advice on what you can do about the negative voice in your head

Key Takeaways:

  •  We have to learn how to function well in ambiguity. Roll with the punches and switch your strategy when unexpected things happen.
  •  The reality is that hiring managers want to know if you’re resourceful enough to figure out what you don’t know. They also want you to make them look good through good results or good reputation.
  •  In job search, you don’t necessarily have to show your most impressive achievement, instead show your most relevant achievement.
  •  There’s a 100% chance that nothing will happen if you do nothing, but if you try something, there’s a chance that you might get an unexpected positive response and outcome.

“Take control of your career. You can, you’re not stuck. You’re not at the mercy of your hiring manager. If you practice and think through these things, you can control where the conversation goes and put the best light on yourself as a candidate.” - Dawn Graham

24 Feb 2022Carrie Kerpen – Secrets for Success00:27:12

Carrie Kerpen is Co-founder and CEO of Likeable Media; host of All the Social Ladies podcast; and author of Work It: Secrets for Success from the Boldest Women in Business.

In this episode Lauren and Carrie discuss:

How to stand out with social media

Women and money

Dealing with financial anxiety

Benefits of building a Fab Personal Advisory Board (PAB)

Practicing boundaries and saying “no” more often to gain power

Failure and challenges – how you can fail fantastically

The importance of demonstrating vulnerability to demonstrate confidence and leadership while leveling up

Key takeaways:

Recognize that social media is a highlight reel, you need to find your own highlight reel that is truly and authentically you.

No presence on social media is a presence and comes across that you don’t want to be found – if individuals are looking for you, they will then look at someone else.

Women must train themselves to push past being risk averse by becoming educated, interacting with women in a safe space, and negotiating around compensation and salary while utilizing a “mental mute” to allow negotiators to come to you.

An advisory board comprised of individuals that have experience in areas that you would like to improve upon will help you enhance your life and get your career to the next level.

It’s important to not just fail and learn from it, but to be willing to share this failure with others to help them feel okay with their own failures.

When women work together, we are so much more powerful.” – Carrie Kerpen

You have to be really really intentional about your desire to live the life that you want.”

Carrie Kerpen

Failure is essential to be able to grow and you do not build resilience without experiencing some form of failure.” – Carrie Kerpen

01 Jul 2021Caroline Dowd-Higgins - Prepare for what's Next00:25:34

Caroline is host of the Your Working Life podcast, a career coach, author and speaker.

In this episode Lauren and Caroline discuss:

  •  Why it’s important to get a “growth strategy” or an exit strategy
  •  How can we be better at speaking our minds
  •  Getting quiet with yourself, thinking through if your personal goals and professional goals are aligned.
  •  How we can promote equity and diversity in the workplace

Key Takeaways:

  •  We always need to be a step ahead, thinking “what’s next.” So many uncertainties happen, we need to be prepared.
  •  Listen and also speak up. Think about how you can be a “solution provider.”
  •  Beware the trap of “it’ll get better when…” Don’t wait for it to get better, make it better. The situation is real, but suffering is optional - there are many opportunities to change that.
  •  Be intentional about diversity. It’s not enough to just say it, you have to act.

14 Oct 2021Joanne Rencher – Growth & Transformation00:28:06

Joanne Rencher is the CEO and Founder of WGNinHR Consulting and author of the book,

Tough As Nails: Finding Your Voice as a Woman in the Workplace

In this episode Lauren and Joanne discuss:

The different elements of how women find their own voice in the workplace

How you are perceived and how you want to be perceived

The impact that COVID has had on choices people make in navigating their careers

Decluttering your mind to weigh career options and make good decisions

Shifting from fear to facts in making career decisions

Managing imposter syndrome

Key takeaways:

It’s important to lay out your possibilities and think about the steps you will have to take to achieve your goals – separate the WHAT from the HOW to review options and reduce your overall fear.

Stop saying yes to everything. Make sure that you make decisions based on your career goals and intentions while weighing the pros and cons of available options.

Plot out plans for the next 30, 60, 90 days to help you manage transitions and hit milestones.

Find a truth-teller – a coach, spouse, friend, etc. – to help you weigh options and have more fact-based ways to approach conversations.

Open yourself up to being vulnerable with someone you trust and getting feedback that you may not want to hear but need to hear.

Being overprepared in certain areas and closing gaps/being intentional in areas that you don’t know can help you gain confidence, which feeds into a sense of security and crushes feelings of imposter syndrome.

Dream big but with deadlines.” – Joanne Rencher

You should get used to the sound of your own voice telling the world how awesome you are.”

21 Oct 2021Juanita Ingram – Rewriting Your Story00:37:01

Juanita Ingram is a corporate attorney turned film producer who has accompanied her husband during multiple relocations around the world.

In this episode Lauren and Juanita discuss:

- Transitioning to life as an accompanying spouse

- The international family experience, its associated struggles, and suggestions on how to make it a successful experience

and overcoming the grief that comes with a relocation and change of identity

- The unique experience of being a black expatriate in a global setting

- The challenges and rewards of a dual career relationship

Key takeaways:

- Look at international assignments as an opportunity and not a burden; take the time to discover or rediscover new things about yourself.

- Before making the transition, leverage relocation companies and support that you can receive. Also, sit down and ask yourself what the move means for you – Where do you see yourself in the country and in the move? What kinds of things have you been wanting to do but haven’t been able to?

- Give yourself permission to mourn the trajectory you thought your life was on; get a life coach, counselor, or someone that will help you manage the transition and see new opportunities.

- A vision board can help you have a visual manifestation of a goal while offering inspiration and guidance.

- International assignments can challenge dual career relationships, but also make them stronger – make sure to discuss what each spouse’s role will be during the assignment.

Being abroad allowed me to expand the horizon and the scope of what I could do as an attorney. It allowed me to take a moment to discover other talents or really to reinvest in talents that I already had that I was just too busy to invest in because I was too busy adulting.” – Juanita Ingram (3:15)

As expats or accompanying talent… we have the beautiful opportunity to really thrive and flourish and discover or rediscover new things about ourselves that we may have put a pin in for another time.” – Juanita Ingram (4:11)

Anytime life gives you the opportunity to pause – whether it’s an international move and a career shift, or a pandemic, whatever the case may be – It gives you the opportunity to really take stock and take inventory.” – Juanita Ingram (7:32)

Give yourself permission to mourn the trajectory that you thought you were on, and it’s ok. So often, we think we have to smile and act as though we didn’t want what we gave up. It’s ok and it doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to love where you are going, you aren’t going to love the rewrite of your life, you aren’t going to love where you are emerging from… allow yourself to fully close that chapter.” Juanita Ingram (9:11)

Change your lens to one of seeing opportunity as opposed to seeing what you have so-called given up.” – Juanita Ingram (11:44)

You never stop being what you are, you just lend your talents to other things.” – Juanita Ingram (12:27)

Look at it as an opportunity and not as a burden, because it is that, it is a wonderful opportunity for your family, for yourself… remember that it’s an opportunity for everyone.” – Juanita Ingram (27:38)

There are so many beautiful things to discover, just take the limits off and get the support that you need and not be shy about it.” – Juanita Ingram (31:21)

Have a conversation about what does a successful international assignment look like. What are your expectations and what are your roles going to be? Not forever in your marriage, but in this assignment – because they may change once you come out of this assignment.” -Juanita Ingram (34:22)

What does a successful family unit look like for you and your family? Define it for yourself. You do not have to do what everybody else is doing.” – Juanita Ingram (35:20)

31 Mar 2022Jinny Uppal – Reflective Thinking and Strategic Inaction00:29:03

Jinny Uppal is a Business and Technology Leader

And author of the award winning book, In/Action: Rethinking the Path to Results

In this episode Lauren and Jinny discuss:

What drives major progress

Leveraging reflective thinking and strategic inaction (inaction as a choice)

The mental health crisis and the importance of giving your mind a break

Default mode network (DMN) and supporting neuroscience research

Importance of meditation and mind wandering

Embracing delegation and how to develop this skill

Key takeaways:

Taking a pause or strategic inaction can be powerfully productive.

It is important to take time before meetings to calm nerves and reduce anxiety.

Infusing breaks throughout the day can improve mental wellbeing; reduce fatigue and burnout; and improve productivity.

Letting your mind wander to activate the DMN helps your brain “connect the dots” of information and come up with creative ideas.

Delegation is needed to move up the corporate ladder – it’s important to trust others and the process.

As much as we like giving credit to action that gives us results, we underestimate the power of thoughtful pauses that give birth to new ideas” – Jinny Uppal

We underestimate the power of our mind and our brain to come up with creative solutions to the problems we are facing.” – Jinny Uppal

Delegation is the willingness to let go.” Jinny Uppal

09 Sep 2021Kate Isler – Breaking Borders00:30:43

Kate Isler is CEO of TheWMarketplace; founder of Be Bold Now; and author of Breaking Borders.

In this episode Lauren and Sharon discuss:

Inspiring women to challenge the limits of society

How to try new things and follow your passion to find what fits for yourself in a career

Leveraging your network and different paths to achieve goals

Taking initiative to build relationships to gain trust; ask for/receive support; and increase workplace allies

The importance of women doing business with women

Key takeaways:

You don’t have to have to be perfect or have all of the qualifications to achieve success.

When a job doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Push yourself to move on before you’re pushed.

You must follow your passion to fill yourself up and show up as your best self.

Your good work isn’t always going to be noticed – be sure to express what you need.

Build a support group/council that supports what you are looking for and is also honest with you.

I can’t imagine how I would live with not trying something, because what is the worst that could happen? You could fail and learn something versus regret. What If I could have been very successful at that thing that interested me or excited me or I felt like it was my calling?” – Kate Isler

02 Dec 2021Bernie Frazier – Overcoming Barriers to Achieve Success00:30:31

Bernie Frazier is a career coach at IMPACT Group; prior recruiter; and author of Your Success Is in You!: Empowering and Equipping You to Create Your Best Career Ever!

In this episode Lauren and Bernie discuss:

Owning your own career success

Interview strategies

The negotiation process

How to work with internal recruiters as a job seeker, their role in helping you achieve your career goals, and how candidates can work through a recruiter to receive other opportunities

Key takeaways:

Determining what you want in your career is the foundation to achieving help from a career coach.

If your goal is to be on the revenue-generating side of the business, you must be careful in how you select opportunities and understand what is required to get you there.

Candidates should approach a job search by thinking like the person you are targeting, not by focusing on what sounds good to you.

For individuals to set themselves apart as a candidate, they should connect with a recruiter and create a relationship by understanding the recruiters needs and offering referrals to other candidates for jobs that may not be a good fit – this will make them want to help the candidate out as well.

Practice before interviews to ensure that you have quality answers to questions in a succinct manner.

Make sure to provide examples focused on your personal efforts (instead of team efforts) and talk about results of your actions to showcase the impact that your efforts had.

For negotiations, make sure that you are compensated adequately based on skills that you bring to the table and complete research to gain understanding of fair compensation.

Act like a candidate, think like a recruiter.” – Bernie Frazier

  • Investing in your own career development as well as building a network in your industry
  • Differences between men and women’s network structure
  • Relying on your network during a career change
  • How to connect with and remind your network about the value that you add to an organization
  • The best way to stay connected with your network when you are going about your daily life
  • Networking mistakes
  • Strategies in utilizing the various social media platforms for networking

Key takeaways:

  • Taking risks in the form of new opportunities can be a great way to advance your career, especially if you have a strong network to fall back on in case things don’t work out.
  • Men and women have different network structures, and both are important. Women typically use a narrow but deep network based on communication where they invest a lot of time in getting to know people, while men use a broad shallow network based on activity that doesn’t have same depth in getting to know people.
  • When creating a pitch, craft a short intro sentence followed by a pause to allow the other person to speak and say, “tell me more”. Focus on breaking up your information during delivery to allow the chance for dialogue/conversation.
  • Be sure to follow up with people in your network that have offered mentoring/guidance; provide them with updates on your career journey so that they feel appreciated and so you can reach back out to them in the future, if needed.
  • Continue to connect with your network periodically through posting/sharing information; commenting on other’s posts; remembering birthdays; sending holiday cards; etc.
  • Think of online networking the same as in-person networking and use each based on context.

By following up and following through, you are moving a relationship that might have been a one-and-done into a mentor relationship or strong sponsor situation.” – Kelly Hoey

Realize that your daily life activities are part of your networking toolkit. If we only think of networking as an activity we pick up because we are in a job search, that can be very alienating to people if you only show up when you need something.” – Kelly Hoey

Growing up in the business and how you can use a sales career as a path to the c-suite

Working in male-dominated industries

The importance of mentors in excelling your career and helping you to believe in yourself

How to cultivate your confidence to achieve success

Key takeaways:

It is important to receive input from others to provide input on your leadership skills and position in the company.

You must solve customer problems to create value for the company.

Leaders must think about how they can integrate curiosity and a growth mindset in their talent and teams to drive innovation and transformation in businesses.

Working for companies that put values and beliefs first is very important to your overall wellbeing and success.

Take risks, take the journey inward, and go outside of your comfort zone to help build confidence – failure will be part of it, but it will cultivate fearlessness over time.

If you can combine grit and curiosity, I think there is a pretty exciting road ahead for people.” – Maggie Bidlingmaier

01 Jul 2021Penny Pennington - Live and Work with Purpose00:22:02

Penny is Managing Partner at Edward Jones. She is one of the 41 women leading a Fortune 500 company in 2021.

In this episode Lauren and Penny discuss:

  •  Empowering women to set sights on leadership positions
  •  The difference between Success and Significance
  •  Advice on how women can transform their lives and the world around them, and achieve new heights in their career and purpose
  •  How do you understand and clarify your purpose

 Key Takeaways:

  •  Success is often tied with financial value. Instead of just going for a successful life, go for a significant life. Think about how you can impact others’ lives positively.
  •  Let go of the mindset of “if I can see it, I can be it” - you don’t have to see a woman in that chair before you can imagine yourself in that chair. You can be the first to get there.
  •  Never ever disqualify yourself. Start saying yes - even to the things that terrify you.
  •  Say Yes to the uncomfortable parts of the learning.
  •  Empathetic leadership: “Don’t execute the command I gave you, execute the command that I should’ve given you, had I known what you know.”

“Do not demure from proclaiming passionately what gets you up every day.” - Penny Pennington
