25 Nov 202437. How Habitat Optimizing Plasma Exchange Could Change the Future of Brain Health with Dr. David Haase01:01:50
While cleaning up your closet can clear your mind, cleaning up your cellular habitat can change your life. This week, I'm joined by Dr. David Haase, who specializes in integrative holistic medicine and is the founder of the Maxwell Clinic in Tennessee. We sat down to discuss neurofeedback, diagnosing head injuries, and how plasma exchange (aka "an oil change" for cells) can help optimize your brain health and enhance your well-being in the long run. In this episode, you'll discover: The Science of Brain Injuries: "When the brain gets injured, the blood vessels get damaged… You no longer have the amount of vascular supply to the neurons," says Dr. Haase, adding that around 80% of people suffer from a "meaningful head injury." Fortunately, an isolated injury doesn't necessarily mean your entire brain is hurt. "One area of the brain getting injured may not come out as a deficit, but you have decreased your brain ability to be maximally resilient and maximally efficient." This is where neurofeedback comes in. What Is Neurofeedback: "Neurofeedback is a way of retraining the brain to be more electrically efficient," says Dr. Haase. This brain training, which involves measuring the electricity coming off your scalp, shows how your brain reacts to certain stimuli. This feedback can help train the brain to adjust its learning pattern naturally, thus improving focus, mood, migraines, and seizures. "If the brain gets more efficient, everything else can start to improve," he adds. Why Habitat-Optimizing Plasma Exchange Is a Game Changer: Dr. Haase is a pioneer of Habitat-Optimizing Plasma Exchange (HOPE), an intravenous treatment that cleans and replaces your plasma to improve your cellular habitat. "This process of 'oil change' for the blood decreases the rate at which Alzheimer's proceeds by over 60%," he says of the highly individualized method. "It is the single most powerful single therapy, especially for moderate Alzheimer's disease that exists." 05:46 The Role of Brain Function in Health 15:44 Understanding Neurofeedback 24:06 Diagnosing Brain Injuries and Their Impact 28:25 The HOPE Program and Cellular Health 30:23 Understanding Toxins and Nutrient Deficiencies 30:35 Aphoresis: The Oil Change for the Body 32:12 Mechanism of Action: Optimizing the Habitat 33:55 Clinical Applications and Success Stories 36:16 Procedure Details and Safety Measures 37:33 Plasma Exchange for Various Conditions 50:39 Insurance and Cost Considerations Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Haase: Website: https://maxwellclinic.com/ Phone number of the Maxwell Clinic: (615) 3700091 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maxwellclinic/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/maxwellclinic YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQq0FWvHt95ItFuVvpfMvbA X (formerly Twitter): https://twitter.com/maxwellclinic Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidhaasemd/

14 Oct 202434. The Power of EMDR therapy: Overcoming Trauma and Anxiety with Ginger Poag00:48:23
When it comes to experiencing a traumatic event, overcoming its rippling effects can feel overwhelming—like there's no end in sight. EMDR is here to change that. This week, I'm joined by Ginger Poag, a clinical psychotherapist and trauma counselor specializing in EMDR therapy. We sat down to discuss how EMDR works, the effects this modality has on the brain, and why those with anxiety, trauma, and PTSD may benefit the most from it. In this episode, you'll discover: What Is EMDR: An acronym for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, EMDR therapy "allows us to get into the limbic system of the brain where traumas are stored,” shares Poag. "So we're able to access it there, desensitize it, and then move it to a different part of the brain where the brain can now realize, okay, that happened in the past. It's no longer an active threat."  How EMDR Works: EMDR helps you reprocess traumatic events through bilateral movements using eye movements, hand tappers, or sound. This is important because "on a subconscious level, what we do today is being affected by the trauma still stored and unprocessed," says Poag. Introducing a positive belief ("I can overcome anything") can also be done during your session. EMDR vs Talk Therapy:  While talk therapy is always an option, Poag says it can feel limiting to someone with a history of trauma. "I feel like there's a form of narrative therapy where you keep telling your story over and over again, and it can be more traumatizing to the client," she shares, adding, "What I like about EMDR so much is that I don’t need to know every little detail. All of the work is happening in your brain." Ketamine Can Help Access Emotions: Reserved for people who are having a hard time accessing certain memories or those hitting a plateau, using a small dose of ketamine—administered by a clinician—can prove helpful during EMDR sessions. "It's been so effective, and we're able to process through so much at an even quicker rate with the ketamine," says Poag. 02:17 Understanding Trauma and EMDR 04:08 Types of Trauma and Their Impact 09:50 Mechanisms Behind EMDR 11:35 EMDR in Practice: Methods and Effectiveness 13:02 Personal Testimony: Overcoming PTSD 20:00 Comparing EMDR with Traditional Talk Therapy 25:06 EMDR for Couples and Recent Traumatic Events 26:21 Exploring Ketamine in EMDR Therapy 28:43 EMDR Session Timelines and Effectiveness 34:26 EMDR for Children and Young Patients 42:08 Intensive EMDR Sessions and Retreats Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Episode mentioned with Dr. Ann Shippy (The Devastating Effects of Toxic Mold Exposure) Connect with Ginger Poag: Website: https://www.columbiaemdr.com/ To find an EMDR practitioner - Emdria website: https://www.emdria.org/find-an-emdr-therapist/ EMDR Therapy Intensives: https://www.columbiaemdr.com/emdr-therapy-intensives EMDR Intensive Retreat Costa Rica: https://www.columbiaemdr.com/costarica

16 Sep 202430. The Vagus Nerve Connection: How It Shapes Your Gut, Brain, and Immune Health with Dr. Navaz Habib01:06:44
Ever wondered why the gut is referred to as your second brain? Let’s talk about it. This week, I’m joined by Dr. Navaz Habib, the bestselling author of Activate Your Vagus Nerve, and the newly released Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve. We sat down to discuss the importance of the vagus nerve—the only cranial nerve that connects to every organ within your body—the role it plays in your gut, brain, and immune health, the significance of heart rate variability, and why you should be more intentional with your breathing.  In this episode, you'll discover: What the Vagus Nerve Does: Learn more about how the vagus nerve relays status information about your organ functions to the brain.  The Four Areas of Stressors: Working in harmony with the immune system, the vagus nerve can influence inflammation. Triggers include daily, psychological, physical, and biochemical stressors, says Dr. Habib. How Heart Rate Variability Informs the Vagus Nerve Function: Dr. Habib shares that when your HRV is in a good zone (this varies by individual), your body is better able to send signals to the brain through the vagus nerve.  Why Breathing Properly Is Key: Improve your sympathetic-parasympathetic balance—resulting in an increased HRV—by breathing through your nose, not your mouth. 01:59 Dr. Habib's Journey to Functional Medicine 08:17 Understanding the Vagus Nerve 18:46 The Role of the Vagus Nerve in Inflammation 34:04 Understanding HRV and Its Importance 34:39 Accuracy of Different HRV Measurement Devices 36:34 Using HRV Data for Trends, Not Diagnostics 37:07 Personal Experiences and HRV Improvement 40:15 Breathing Techniques to Improve HRV 42:35 The Role of the Diaphragm in Effective Breathing 46:47 Testing and Improving Your BOLT Score 50:27 Altitude Training and HRV 54:38 Vagus Nerve Dysfunction and Long COVID 57:21 Vagus Nerve Stimulation Devices Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Habib: Website: https://drnavazhabib.kartra.com/page/HUhome Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drnavazhabib/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/DrNavazHabib Podcast: The Health Upgrade podcast Book: Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve Book: Activate Your Vagus Nerve The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown Truvaga Vagus Nerve Stimulator.

In describing the focus of her career at present – she said: “I went into medicine to help people be healthier, but what I found in medicine was a system that was as sick as the people it was treating. Ultimately I realized that my calling was to heal the system as well as the patients. I have three areas that I feel are important enough to put my time, energy and monetary resources into. They are: creating a model for integrative care that treats illness upstream before it requires drugs and surgery, finding better ways to train physicians, and providing better end of life care, essentially, learning to die better Her practice includes: comprehensive women’s health care, Functional Medicine, non-surgical gynecology and mine-body medicine. 10 Mar 202544. From Carbon 60 to Anti-M: Exploring the Science of Cancer Support with Ian Mitchell01:14:50
For many, navigating a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming. While mainstream treatments like chemotherapy remain foundational, emerging scientific research offers exciting new ways to support overall health and wellness during treatment. This week, I'm joined by Ian Mitchell, a research scientist and pharmaceutical consultant. We explore groundbreaking insights into Carbon 60 (C60), a compound with unique properties, and how it may complement lifestyle strategies like ketosis for those looking to support their health during cancer treatment. In this episode, you'll discover: What Is Carbon 60 (C60): C60 is a carbon-based molecule known for its antioxidant properties. When paired with lipids, it may interact with cellular membranes in mitochondria to reduce oxidative stress and promote energy production at the cellular level. "All of your inflammatory markers go down simultaneously while your energy levels are going up," says Mitchell. "And so you feel very robust." The Importance of Ketosis: A ketogenic diet, which emphasizes low-carbohydrate, high-fat nutrition, has been studied for its potential to support metabolic health. Mitchell shares how this dietary approach may create an environment that challenges cancer cell growth while supporting healthy DNA integrity.  How C60 Fits into a Comprehensive Wellness Plan: C60’s unique properties allow it to promote healthy cell function while reducing oxidative stress. Mitchell explains how incorporating C60 into a broader health regimen, alongside a supportive diet, may help optimize cellular health and resilience. Chemotherapy Can Be Effective—to an Extent: While chemotherapy plays a crucial role in many treatment plans, Mitchell and I discuss why personalized approaches to wellness and treatment may provide better outcomes. "You have this type of cancer, but nobody is checking to see if in your very specific case, does this chemotherapy work or not?" shares Dr. Myers. 07:24 Carbon 60 and Its Biological Impact 15:14 Cancer Treatment Innovations 27:52 Challenges in the Pharmaceutical Industry 36:59 Diving into Cancer Research 39:09 Exploring Metabolic Approaches to Cancer Treatment 40:27 Personal Experiences with Medical Controversies 41:43 The Role of Ketogenic Diets and Supplements in Cancer Treatments 42:59 Overcoming Medical Challenges with Alternative Therapies 48:02 Success Stories and Setbacks in Cancer Treatment 56:40 Preventative Measures and Long-Term Health Strategies Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Ian Mitchell: Website: https://wizardsciences.com/ Email: support@wizardsciences.com
03 Mar 2014The Myers Way Episode 33: Autoimmunity with Dr. David Brady00:47:59
[Originally published on March 3rd, 2014] Dr. David M. Brady has 22-years of experience as an integrative physician and over 18 years in health sciences academia. He is a licensed naturopathic medical physician in CT and VT, a board certified clinical nutritionist and received his original clinical training as a chiropractic physician. He currently serves as the Vice Provost for the Division of Health Sciences, Interim Dean of the College of Naturopathic Medicine, and Director of the Human Nutrition Institute at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. He maintains a private practice, Whole Body Medicine, in Trumbull, CT. Dr. Brady is also the Chief Medical Officer for Designs for Health, Inc. He is an internationally sought-after presenter on nutritional, naturopathic and integrative medicine. He has appeared on the plenary speaking panel of some of the largest and most prestigious conferences in the field including; IFM, ACAM, A4M, IHS, and many more. Dr. Brady has published a multitude of peer-reviewed scientific papers and textbooks related to chronic pain, autoimmunity and functional gastroenterology and is a featured contributing author in the medical textbooks;  Advancing Medicine with Food and Nutrients, Integrative Gastroenterology, and Laboratory Evaluations for Integrative and Functional Medicine. Dr. Brady, you have emphasized the topic of autoimmune disorders in many of your publications, your professional lectures and your private practice. What developed your interest in this topic so keenly?  You published a paper in the Open Journal of Rheumatology & Autoimmunity in 2013 which garnered a lot of attention titled: Molecular Mimicry, the Hygiene Hypothesis, Stealth Infections and Other Examples of Disconnect Between Medical Research and the Practice of Clinical Medicine in Autoimmune Disease. That is quite a title. Why did this paper stimulate such a buzz?  You suggest that autoimmune disease is a “modern epidemic” and that rates of autoimmune disease have quadrupled in the last fifty years. What are some of the reasons for that? In your publications, including the one mentioned above, you bring up several specific hypotheses related to why autoimmune diseases have become so prevalent in the Western industrialized countries. I would like to ask you specifically about some of them, including: – Molecular mimicry – Hygiene Hypothesis – Stealth Infections My understanding is that some people are being diagnosed with celiac disease that do not have the genes. Are we seeing a turn in the tide? Are people without some sort of genes toward autoimmunity now becoming autoimmune? Do you use soil-based probiotics in your autoimmune patients? On the topic of stealth infections, why aren’t more doctors testing for and picking up on these infections? Do you empirically put your autoimmune patients on antibiotics for infections you know are associated with these diseases, or do you first treat them with the standard functional medicine approach (an elimination diet, healing the gut, dealing with toxins, and treating any obvious infections)? A few months ago a paper was circulating that pointed to salt as a stimulant for autoimmune disease. Is sea salt a concern, or is it simply salt from packaged foods that is a problem? Or is the problem caused by an imbalance in sodium and potassium? Finally, where do you practice? How can people find more information about you and this fascinating topic? This week, I'm doing something a little different on the podcast. I sat down for a heartfelt conversation with Dr. Ann Shippy, MD a fellow survivor and expert on toxic mold exposure. Unlike our typical interviews, this episode feels more like a deep dive into our personal experiences and the lessons we've learned about dealing with this hidden health hazard. Together, we explore the insidious nature of mold toxicity, which we’ve both struggled with. 07 Oct 202433. Rewire Your Brain for Happiness: Mindfulness & Self-Compassion with Dr. Shauna Shapiro00:52:03
Being kind and self-compassionate may be the key to a more fulfilling life. So, how can you make it a constant in your life? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Shauna Shapiro, a clinical psychologist and internationally recognized expert in mindfulness and self-compassion. We sat down to discuss the true meaning of mindfulness, what being kind does to your brain, and how to successfully introduce meditation to your daily routine. In this episode, you'll discover: Kindness Shifts Your Neurochemistry: Practicing self-compassion and kindness greatly benefits your mental fitness. According to Dr. Shapiro, being kind to yourself "literally turns on the learning centers of the brain." This signals the brain to release oxytocin, which helps to settle the nervous system, and dopamine, which "is this neuromodulator of motivation and learning." Mindfulness vs Meditation: While sometimes used interchangeably, mindfulness and meditation are not the same. "Mindfulness is a way of being," says Dr. Shapiro, adding that to be mindful is to be present in the moment and with yourself. "Meditation is the exercise."  Why Progress Matters More Than Perfection: In short, perfection is not attainable, sustainable, or something to strive for. "Perfection is the antithesis of evolution. Perfection means I'm done. That's not the goal," shares Dr. Shapiro. "And so when I make a mistake, instead of beating myself up, it's like, how can I learn? How can I grow? And you're cheering for yourself instead of kicking yourself when you're already down." How to Start Your Meditation Journey: Instead of setting a lofty goal, start with meditating five minutes a day for five days, morning or night. It may feel difficult in the beginning, but the benefits are worth it, says Dr. Shapiro: "It shifts our relationship with ourselves, our relationship with the world, how we perceive things." 04:40 Defining Mindfulness 06:55 Mindfulness vs. Meditation 10:18 Shauna's Monastery Experience 14:06 The Science Behind Kindness 23:42 Practical Tips for Mindfulness 26:11 Basic Mindfulness Practices and Resources 28:11 The Impact of Mindfulness on Daily Life 29:11 Mindfulness in Parenting 30:20 The Role of Intentions in Mindfulness 37:11 Empathy vs. Compassion 41:12 Success Stories and Transformations Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Shapiro: Website: https://drshaunashapiro.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drshaunashapiro/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrShaunaShapiro/ YouTube: https://bit.ly/4gUC8cX Good Morning. Nutrivore is the revolutionary yet simple dietary concept: get all the nutrients our bodies need from the foods we eat. To Dr. Sarah, Nutrivore represents a completely new way to think about foods. 16 Dec 202440. From Prevention to Treatment: Inside Dr. Connealy’s Integrative Cancer Solutions00:58:11
When it comes to living a healthy, full life, you must take inventory of your daily routine—it can inform the current and future state of your health. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy, a leading expert in integrative medicine, who is known for addressing the root cause of disease, including cancer. We sat down to discuss cancer prevention, early detection, and how key lifestyle changes can treat and prevent disease.  In this episode, you'll discover: Why Cancer Diagnoses Are More Common Today: Since 1990, there's been an 80% increase in cancer among young people especially. Dr. Connealy attributes this to a variety of factors—pollution in the air, water, and food supply, people leading more sedentary lives, and the rise of antibiotics—that weren't as prevalent decades ago. "It's toxic everywhere, and it doesn't matter where you eat, what you eat, it's present." How to Prevent Disease: In that same vein, there are steps you can take to help your body help you. It all starts with how you live your 24-hour day, says Dr. Connealy. As for what you can do to Take Back Your Health™? Address your emotional state, detoxify, go outside, exercise, boost your vitamin C intake, clock in quality sleep, eat a paleo diet, and limit daily stressors wherever possible. "Your body is miraculously made. It's constantly trying to take care of you," adds Dr. Connealy.  Early Detection Signs: While Dr. Connealy says bloodwork doesn't typically reveal a cancer diagnosis, there are markers you should be cognizant of. If your C reactive protein ("a nonspecific marker for inflammation"), for example, is over 0.5, that is something to be weary of because "inflammation is the precursor to all diseases," says Dr. Connealy, who also emphasizes the importance of tracking levels of vitamin D, which influences over 3,000 genes. 00:00 Rising Cancer Rates: A Modern Epidemic 02:46 Dr. Connealy’s Personal Journey 09:47 The Importance of Prevention and Early Detection 15:30 Practical Steps for Health and Wellness 30:20 Understanding Hemoglobin A1C and Nagalase 30:52 Immune System and Hormone Testing 31:26 Cancer Profile and Liquid Biopsies 32:53 Bioenergetic Testing and Chinese Medicine 35:30 Tumor Microenvironment and Conventional Oncology 37:53 Integrative Approaches to Cancer Treatment 42:31 Low Dose Chemotherapy and Insulin Potentiation 47:22 The Role of Fasting and Lifestyle Changes 52:13 QT Scan: A Kinder Breast Evaluation Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Connealy: Website: https://www.connealymd.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ConnealyMD/ Instagram: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leigherinconnealy/ Twitter: https://x.com/drconnealymd Podcast - Cancer Conversation: https://cancercenterforhealing.com/webinar/ Books - The Cancer Revolution: https://amymd.io/4

02 Dec 202438. The Inflammation Epidemic: How to Heal Your Body From the Inside Out with Dr. Will Cole00:55:11
Looking inward is the first step to enhancing your overall health, from putting gluten sensitivities at bay to keeping autoimmune flare-ups dormant. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Will Cole, a leading functional medicine expert and dear friend. We sat down to discuss why some people are more sensitive to inflammatory foods and environmental toxins, the role of trauma in autoimmunity, and the importance of spending time in nature. In this episode, you'll discover: Why Every Body Is Different: Have you noticed how certain people can eat inflammatory foods or live among mold with no side effects? Turns out, this resilience comes down to genes. "The more gene variants you have makes your body slower at detoxing, slower at methylating, more prone to being sensitive to an environmental toxin, a virus or a mold, chronic stress, or trauma," says Dr. Cole.  What Contributes to Inflammation: The way food is grown and processed has an effect on well-being. "We're seeing food reactions that 15 years ago we weren't having," says Dr. Cole. "And I think every few years, we're seeing people with more sensitive systems. So it's not the food's fault per se. It's what we've done to the food supply and what we've done to the human microbiome."  Find the Right Diet for You: "Don't focus on all the things you 'can't have,' but you can have whatever you want," says Dr. Cole, who recommends making hearty, easy-to-digest stews and soups if you're looking for soothing, gut-friendly recipes. " I want to shift someone's mindset away from this sort of dieting culture to 'I love my body enough to nourish it with things that love me back.'" The Link between Trauma and Autoimmunity: While environmental toxins and microbiome health can result in autoimmune issues, so can psychological trauma. "The higher one's ACE (Adverse Childhood Events or Experiences) score, the more likely that that's a component to things like autoimmune conditions and metabolic issues," says Dr. Cole. 02:19 Discussing Food Dyes and Health Activism 06:17 The Impact of COVID-19 Vaccines 10:48 Understanding Inflammation and Autoimmunity 11:22 Genetics, Epigenetics, and Health 18:45 Empowering Health Choices 24:13 Parenting and Healthy Eating 30:31 Personal Diet Journeys: From Vegan to Paleo 42:45 The Role of Trauma in Autoimmunity 48:21 Practical Tips for Better Health Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Cole: Website: https://drwillcole.com/ Podcast (The Art of Being Well): https://drwillcole.com/podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drwillcole Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/doctorwillcole/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DrWillCole

30 Sep 202432. The Trauma-Mitochondria Connection: Reversing Chronic Illness at the Cellular Level with Dr. Susan Blum01:03:45
Stress and trauma will always hold power over you and your overall health—unless you face the problem at the cellular level. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Susan Blum, a board-certified physician specializing in preventative medicine, functional medicine, and integrative medicine. We sat down to discuss the critical role of mitochondria on your health, the impact of environmental toxins, infections, and trauma on these cellular powerhouses, and integrative approaches to healing.  In this episode, you'll discover: What Exactly Are Mitochondria: As vital organelles found in cells—most notably in the brain, muscles, and heart—mitochondria are "the little furnace inside every cell that makes your energy called ATP," describes Dr. Blum.  The Link Between Trauma and Mitochondrial Health: Stress and trauma can cause the cell to enter the cell danger response, says Dr. Blum. This, in turn, damages the mitochondria by blocking their ability to function properly. This can result in brain fog, fatigue, and even chronic illness. How to Treat the Root Cause: Dr. Blum stresses the importance of “cleaning up your environment“ as your first step, which can include testing your home for health-disrupting mold or figuring out what triggers you physically and emotionally. Next steps may include going to therapy, filtering your water, and prioritizing deep, restorative sleep since "your mitochondria repair at night," says Dr. Blum.  The Healing Power of Ketamine: Under the supervision of a trained professional, IV ketamine can safely take the healing process to the next level when paired with therapy. "Most people's experience is there's this deep meditation space of quiet behind their thoughts without needing to meditate almost," shares Dr. Blum. 02:13 Dr. Blum's Journey into Functional Medicine 04:06 The Impact of Trauma and Stress 17:38 The Role of Mitochondria in Health 21:26 Cell Danger Response and Healing 31:18 Introduction to Mitochondrial Damage and Testing 31:25 Understanding the MitoSwab Test 33:11 Targeted Mitochondrial Therapies 42:37 Emotional Wellness and Ketamine Therapy 56:15 Preventative Measures for Mitochondrial Health Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Blum: Website: https://blumcenterforhealth.com Emotional Wellness Program: https://blumcenterforhealth.com/emotional-wellness-program/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drsusanblum/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/blumcenterforhealth YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/drsusanblum

[Originally published on October 21, 2013] Steve Wright is an electrical engineer turned health engineer. Back in 2009, he was struggling with IBS symptoms, weight gain, acne, and other severe health issues. When conventional medicine didn’t help, his friend Jordan Reasoner got him to start the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. In just a few days his IBS symptoms were basically gone. Since then, he’s focused on getting as healthy as possible and teaching others what he used to get to the root causes of digestive problems, hormone dysregulation, and detox issues. He writes and works with people 1-on-1 over at scdlifestyle.com. What kind of digestive problems did you have? What is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet? You mentioned “SCD is like the little brother of Paleo,” what’s the difference between SCD and Paleo? Who is SCD for? I know you guys talk a lot about Poop. What can I learn about my health from poop? Can you share these 3 factors that make up a “perfect poop?” What are some of the common problems you’re seeing with people on SCD? You guys talk a lot about the 4 horsemen, or 4 common foods that are allowed, but still cause a lot of problems for people. Can you tell us about those? If diet doesn’t seem to be enough, what are some supplements that can help those with digestive problems? What are some of the root causes of digestive problems? 24 Feb 202543. Unlocking Peak Health: The Healing Power of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy with Dr. Scott Sherr01:05:48
Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have long been used for acute issues such as strokes and brain injuries—but can they be used for chronic conditions as well? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Scott Sherr, an internal medicine physician certified in hyperbaric oxygen therapy. We sat down to discuss what makes this chamber "a wound healer from the inside out" as well as the proper protocols one should follow before even considering oxygen therapy for chronic issues. In this episode, you'll discover: The Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): As soon as you step into the hyperbaric chamber, your body works to reoxygenate the cells in low-oxygen tissue. In the long term, not only does the body rebuild damaged blood vessels, but you can also expect to see a decrease in inflammation and swelling, an enhancement of the immune system, and lymphatic and detoxification optimization.  Having a Healthy Foundation Is Key: "You want to get some of that foundational stuff working before you start stressing the system with oxygen," says Dr. Sherr. This includes having the right vitamins, minerals, and nutrients required to detoxify and create energy or ATP effectively. "The challenge in the hyperbaric world is that we don't think about these things as much," he adds. HBOT's Role In Cancer Treatment: Dr. Sherr uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy in conjunction with other interventions, such as vitamin C IVs and a ketogenic diet, as a way to support and sensitize people for chemotherapy and radiation.  What Methylene Blue Does: In terms of supplemental support, Dr. Sherr turns to methylene blue, which helps optimize the mitochondria—the parts of the cells that produce ATP—while promoting detoxification at the same time, which the internal medicine physician calls "very unusual." He opts for low doses of the supplement to avoid potentially causing oxidative stress in the body. 05:40 Integrative Approach to Hyperbaric Therapy 07:03 Understanding Hyperbaric Therapy Basics 15:41 Physiological Benefits of Hyperbaric Therapy 19:07 Hyperbaric Therapy for Various Conditions 22:58 Hyperbaric Therapy and Cancer 26:27 Types of Hyperbaric Chambers 35:06 The Importance of Foundational Health Before Hyperbaric Therapy 39:36 Personal Experiences and Protocols for Hyperbaric Therapy 42:10 Optimizing Hyperbaric Therapy with Other Modalities 52:19 Methylene Blue: Benefits and Applications Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Episode mentioned with Dr. Shai Efrati on HBOT: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1bwEfDrSU5RTpwOkMwYf3L?si=e96668253f504c10 Connect with Dr. Sherr: Website: https://www.hyperbaricmedicalsolutions.com/integrative-hbot/scott-sherr Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe) Practice: https://home-sf.co/ OneBase Health website: https://onebasehealth.com/ Methylene blue product: https://troscriptions.com/pages/team/dr-scott-sherr Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drscottsherr/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drsherr/

09 Dec 202439. The Terrain Approach to Cancer: Dr. Nasha Winters on Revolutionizing Integrative Oncology01:04:28
When it comes to cancer care—from the specific diet you follow to the type of treatment you subject your body to—quality intervention is key. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Nasha Winters, an integrative oncologist and cancer "thriver" (she was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer at age 19), who is pioneering the future of cancer care. We sat down to discuss the root cause of the illness, the importance of doing a self-audit of your home and habits, and why there is a time and a place for conventional cancer care. In this episode, you'll discover: Cancer Goes Beyond Genetics: Cancer was originally believed to be genetic, but recent research demonstrates that it's a metabolic disease. A common denominator among cancer cells is that they all have very damaged mitochondria (known as the powerhouse of the cell), shares Dr. Winters. "We were just looking at the wrong organelle all these years when the real organelle of interest was the mitochondria and the environment in which the mitochondria is swimming in and being exposed to," she adds. Why a Self-Audit Is a Non-Negotiable: An easy first step to change your terrain is knowing what you’re putting on, in, and around your body. This can be anything from skincare products and kitchen utensils to water filtration systems and air fresheners. "The more we're exposed to at a younger age, the more our nervous systems, our immune systems, and our metabolic systems are wired differently to make us more vulnerable to disease in general and cancer in particular," says Dr. Winters. Making small lifestyle changes can lead to a big, sustainable impact. Blending Two Types of Care Is Vital: Despite her lifelong mission to educate patients and practitioners on the transformative benefits of integrative medicine, Dr. Winters isn't here to villainize conventional cancer treatments. She does, however, stress the importance of marrying the two—based on your individual needs and diagnosis. It's important to ask yourself, says Dr. Winters: "How can I make the standard of care effective with as few toxins as possible while simultaneously protecting the healthy cells and strengthening the environment, the terrain in which cancer happens?" 00:49 Dr. Nasha's Cancer Journey 08:23 Accidental Discoveries and Fasting Benefits 16:02 Nutritional Changes and Health Improvements 22:35 Exploring Metabolic and Mitochondrial Theories of Cancer 27:42 Debunking the Genetic Mutation Theory of Cancer 28:33 The Role of Mitochondria in Cancer 29:30 Changing the Environment to Combat Cancer 30:13 Self-Audit: Evaluating Your Surroundings 33:43 The Impact of Conventional Treatments on Cancer 35:43 A New Approach to Cancer Treatment 44:54 The Vision for a New Cancer Hospital Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Winters: Website: https://www.drnasha.com/ Podcast - Metabolic Matters: https://www.drnasha.com/metabolic-matters Metabolic Terrain Institute of Health (non-profit & training): https://www.mtih.org/ Books: https://www.drnasha.com/books-and-education Mitovida: https://mitovida.com/

28 Oct 202436. Learn How to Breathe and Align Your Body to Build Strength with Aaron Alexander, CR, LMT00:57:39
Did you know how you move and breathe is tied to your strength and longevity? This week, I'm joined by Aaron Alexander, a pioneering movement coach, author, and creator of The Align Method. We sat down to discuss the importance of proper breathing, functional movement, the best ways to align your body, and why everyone should "redevelop a relationship to the ground." In this episode, you'll discover: Why You Should Pay Attention to Your Breathing: Compared to breathing in through your mouth, breathing in through your nose reigns supreme. Doing the latter helps you take advantage of filtration, additional nitric oxide (allowing for oxygen to flow to vital organs), and humidification. "Your nose is preparing the air for your lungs and the rest of your body every time you breathe," says Alexander. "It's like passing through the processing plant." Spending Time on the Floor Has Its Health Benefits: Challenge yourself to sit on the floor for 30 minutes each day, whether that means watching TV on your living room floor or eating dinner at your coffee table. Why? This simple act benefits your mobility, setting you up for healthier aging in the long run, and your digestion. "It's like a shotgun of health and vitality for your hips, for your knees, for your ankles, for your pelvic floor," says Alexander.  Everything in Life Is Fitness: Think outside the gym, shares The Align Method creator. "Fitness is not a thing that you do, but fitness is who you are as a person," he says, adding that using your visual, breathing, and postural muscles all count as fitness. "You're always in a place of training yourself," shares Alexander. "Every moment throughout your day is an opportunity to heal your body a little bit more." 02:11 Aaron's Journey into Bodybuilding 05:54 Understanding Functional Movement 14:39 The Importance of Breathing 18:23 Incorporating Ground Sitting 27:11 Integrating Movement into Daily Life 27:44 Setting Up a Movement-Friendly Home 28:35 Lymphatic System and Movement 30:07 Core Principles of the Aligned Method 30:20 Fitness as a Lifestyle 32:58 Mind-Body Connection 36:35 Polyvagal Theory and Cooperative Play 38:28 Getting Started with the Aligned Method 40:51 Diet and Nutrition Insights Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Aaron Alexander: Website: https://www.alignpodcast.com/ Free trial of the Align Method: https://join.alignpodcast.com/products/align-method-program-join/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@AlignPodcast Align Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/align-podcast/id988576741 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aaronalexander/

21 Oct 202435. Harnessing Medicinal Fungi: The Key to Reducing Inflammation and Boosting Immunity with Dr. Robert Rountree00:58:23
What you eat and drink determines how you feel—and can inform your ability to develop or ward off chronic disease. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Robert Rountree, a leading expert in integrative and personalized medicine. We sat down to discuss how an inflammatory diet is linked to chronic disease, the health benefits of medicinal fungi, and which types you should start incorporating into your daily wellness routine. In this episode, you'll discover: The Role of Inflammation in Chronic Diseases: If you regularly consume inflammatory foods and beverages (think: high-sugar, high-carb, and overly processed), you run the risk of setting inflammation in the body in motion, says Dr. Rountree, adding, "The problem is, it doesn't always turn off." And inflammation is the precursor to virtually all chronic diseases. The Power of Medicinal Fungi: Training your immune system is possible, according to Dr. Rountree, and medicinal fungi can help strengthen it to combat a wide range of infections. "The first rule is to eat as many of the ones you like as you can," he shares, citing lion's mane, shiitake, oyster, and king trumpet as the best mushrooms to cook with.  Mushroom Varieties and Their Benefits: Different mushrooms have different benefits. Cordyceps can help with adrenal and kidney support, reishi is known as "the elixir of immortality" can help support stamina, while coriolus (also known as turkey tail) can help combat cancer. Go ahead and have your pick of the harvest—you can't go wrong with any of them. 09:55 The Role of Inflammation in Chronic Diseases 13:51 Understanding Inflammation and Diet 24:47 Solutions: Mushrooms and Medicinal Fungi 30:51 Understanding Trained Immunity 31:06 Clinical Insights on S. I am excited to say that I have wrapped up season 1 of my Take Back Your Health™ podcast. For the last episode of the season, I have finally recorded my first solo cast. This is not just any solo cast. This is so personal and vulnerable for me—I literally bared it all in this episode. I definitely saved the best for last this season. I share what ups and downs I have been through over the last three years and, most importantly, a big health scare. I hold back tears (for the most part) as I describe almost being diagnosed with cancer and all of the very outside-the-box treatments I tried to finally get the all clear. You will not want to miss this episode! As the season comes to a close I want to thank you all for listening and let you know how very much I appreciate all of your support. I love what I do, and if I’m being honest, so much has transpired in my personal life. I’m finding it challenging to envision a season 2. It can be tough to publish a podcast episode every week. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the effort it takes to work on my podcast, and weighing whether to keep going. So, I want to hear from you! If my podcast has helped you in any way and you would like to hear a season 2, please let me know. I’d love to hear from you! 10 Feb 202542. From Diagnosis to Thriving: How Taylor Dukes Chose Integrative Medicine to Heal Brain Cancer00:48:58
A free way to support your cancer treatment? Shifting your mindset and finding the positives in life. This week, I'm joined by Taylor Dukes, a family nurse practitioner, mother of two, and former colleague. We sat down to discuss her cancer journey—from finding out she had a brain tumor to entering remission—what she's learned in the years since her initial diagnosis, and how reframing her mindset helped her thrive. In this episode, you'll discover: Integrative Approaches to Cancer Treatment: When doctors found a brain tumor in Dukes' right frontal lobe, the mother of two didn't jump straight into surgery. Instead, she implemented a lot of integrative therapies such as coffee enemas, hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy, wearing a red light helmet, and more. "In the five months between when I got diagnosed and when I actually had surgery, we were able to shrink the brain tumor in half," says Duke."  The Power of Positive Thinking: Dukes, who currently has "no evidence of disease," believes that as long as you’re breathing, there is always hope and there are always options. "No diagnosis, no test, no statistic has the ability to figure out the number of your days," says Dukes, who credits prayer and meditation for her mindset. "Your mind is powerful and what you believe is so, so powerful." Maintaining Your Health After Cancer: Two years after her diagnosis, Dukes is now in maintenance mode and focuses on getting her immune system back on track. She keeps up with regular fasting, eats a lower-carb diet, and alternates between red light therapy, ozone therapy, and sauna. “I'm starting specific therapies to target the co-infections and Lyme markers I have,” she says. 06:40 A Life-Changing Diagnosis 10:15 Integrative Approach to Healing 18:19 The Power of Faith and Family 20:26 Life After Surgery 24:41 Immune System Suppression and Cancer Growth 25:01 Prevention and Immune System Recovery 25:26 Targeted Therapies and Integrative Approaches 26:55 Conventional vs. Integrative Treatment Options 31:11 Support Systems and Personal Decisions 34:08 Navigating Parenthood During Cancer 37:55 Coping Mechanisms and Emotional Resilience Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Taylor Dukes: Website: https://taylordukeswellness.com/ Online store: https://shop.taylordukeswellness.com/collections/all-products Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/taylordukeswellness/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/taylordukeswellness/ Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@taylordukeswellness
05 May 2014The Myers Way Episode 35: Disease Delusion with Dr. Jeff Bland01:12:29
[Originally published on May 5th, 2014] Jeffrey Bland has been an internationally recognized leader in the nutritional medicine field for over 35 years and is known for his ability to synthesize complex scientific concepts in a manner that is both personable and accessible. A biochemist by training, Dr. Bland earned dual degrees in biology and chemistry from the University of California, Irvine, and completed his PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Oregon. He is a Fellow of the both the American College of Nutrition where he is a Certified Nutrition Specialist and the Association for Clinical Biochemistry. With his wife, Susan, Dr. Bland founded The Institute for Functional Medicine in 1991, a nonprofit organization focused on educating healthcare practitioners on effective approaches to treating and preventing chronic disease. Dr. Bland has authored five books on nutritional medicine for the healthcare professional and six books on nutrition and health for the general public including the newly released The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life (HarperWave, 2014). You’re considered the father of functional medicine. How did you actually get into the subject? I appreciate that you’ve bridged the gap between researcher and doctor. It seems like if you want to ask “why?” you shouldn’t be a doctor, you should be a researcher. That’s how we are trained in medical school. How can you explain that disconnect? Do you feel that the term “functional medicine” has caught on? Is it where you expected it to be? In your newest book, The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Cause of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, Happier Life, you discuss the fact that we’ve come so far with medical technology, but there has also been an increase in the number of chronic diseases. How is it possible that we’ve made all these advances, yet we seem to be a sicker population than ever? You mention in the book seven core physiological processes that affect every organ, and that’s really the heart of what’s making everyone so sick. Can you give us some detail on each of those? We have 25,000 genes and 3,000,000 SNPs. This seems to be the core of what you’re talking about here: there are these 7 physiological influences, but it’s their influences on these various SNPs, is that correct? How did we get the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of certain nutrients? Do we really all need the same amount? How do you think we as a society are going to go forward? How do we mesh the world of functional medicine with that of RDAs and nutritional facts? How about lab testing? How will conventional lab testing become more functional and individualized in the future? What are five changes that you would make to our existing healthcare model to ensure that it becomes a more functional and holistic healthcare model? How does our lifestyle here in the United States contribute to a sick society? What do you eat in a typical day?
