I’ve been getting a lot of requests to share some specific imaginal techniques that have radically changed my life for the better in a very short period of time.

I can vouch for the efficacy of these techniques through direct experience, but PLEASE don’t take my word for it.

My favorite thing about these techniques is you can try them yourself to see if they work.

If they don’t, then I’m just a nutball with a podcast who think consciousness precedes external reality. But if they do work then you got some stuff to sort out and play around with.

The basic guidelines before getting started:

1. Have an ethical framework or foundation you bring to your imaginal acts. Personally, I like the Golden Rule and Know Thyself as my go to ethical guidelines.

2. If my premise is accurate and imagination literally creates reality as we know it, that’ gonna change your world. Be ready for that. It’s hard to go back once you’ve drunk from these waters.

3. Have fun, stay cool and bring love.

Nina learned traditional chants (bhajans) from her grandfather in a village in south India when she nine years old. The chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996.

Her childhood was spent living in and moving between many countries around the world and when she settled in New York her working life began in the banking world, switched to organizing and leading photographic wildlife safaris in Africa and India, and now for many years, is Krishna Das' business manager and assistant.

But how do psychedelics fit within the truth that imagination precedes materiality?

Those things are material. What gives, Noah?

Here’s the thing. While consciousness altering substances, rituals and any other healing modality you attempt actually work, the reality is all of these things work because we imagine them to work.

Remember, stable imaginal acts become facts.

This also explains why there are so many valid paths for discovering who you are.

Be it the Christian Mystic, Sufi, Tibetan Buddhist, South American Shaman or literally any other spiritual path that’s out there, they’re all talking about the same thing at the end of the day, just in different imaginal languages.

Don’t let anyone tell you your way of discovering the true nature of things is wrong.

Find yourself, trust yourself and then dive in to a whole new world, Aladdin style.

My guest this week is the truly amazing, Roshi Joan Halifax.

Roshi Joan Halifax, Ph.D., is a Buddhist teacher, Zen priest, anthropologist, and pioneer in the field of end-of-life care. She is Founder, Abbot, and Head Teacher of Upaya Institute and Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

She received her Ph.D. in medical anthropology in 1973 and has lectured on the subject of death and dying at many academic institutions and medical centers around the world.

I've known Roshi for a few years now from my work with her wonderful Zen Center, Upaya.

Upaya is a Sanskrit word which translates to skillful means something that Roshi truly embodies.

In our chat Joan brings up the importance of balancing engaged activism with non-attachment.

Combining her years of activism with her Zen sitting practice gives her a unique and valuable perspective on many the issues facing humanity and the world at-large.

My guest today is musician, author and Dharma teacher, David Nichtern. David was a student of one of my favorite Buddhist teachers, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and continues to teach in the Shambhala tradition. David's also an accomplished composer, producer and guitarist – a four-time Emmy winner and a two-time Grammy nominee. He's the founder of Dharma Moon and 5 Points Records. David has recorded and played with Stevie Wonder, Jerry Garcia, Lana Del Rey, Maria Muldaur, Paul Simon and many others. Bonus fact: he's also been a lifelong (literally) friend of Christopher Guest.

David and I discuss a whole lot of stuff in this episode including the concepts of idiot compassion, right livelihood, spiritual materialism, relationships and the connection between music and Buddhism. I also reference a podcast David did with comedian Pete Holmes on Pete's podcast, "You Made it Weird." You can check that out here.

Erika Dyck, PhD (McMaster), MA (USask), BA (Dalhousie), Professor, Canada Research Chair in the History of Medicine stops by Synchronicity to discuss how women have been whitewashed from psychedelic research AND the disturbing case of government sponsored eugenics in Alberta, Canada. It's a doozy!

Dr. Dyck’s chief interests are in the history of psychiatry, mental health, deinstitutionalization and eugenics. She is the author of Psychedelic Psychiatry which examines the history of LSD experimentation and how it fit within broader trends in the changing orientation of psychiatry during the post-World War II period.

My guest today is the delightful, funny and incredibly engaging, Kelly Carlin.

Kelly is the daughter of George Carlin (legendary comedian and counter-culture figure) and she's also pretty freaking rad. In addition to having just finished her autobiography, "A Carlin Home Companion," Kelly has a degree in Jungian Depth Psychology. But those are just roles right?

On top of all that (or maybe underneath it all) Kelly is one of the nicest and smartest people I've had the pleasure to speak with. Her thoughts on modern culture, being a spiritual seeker, balancing the dark and the light, investigating the shadow and bringing much needed equanimity to an anything but modern world are just a few examples of what Kelly's about.
