08 Mar 2018 | Episode 21 – Manster Mosh | 01:02:17
It's another week, and the boys' fascination with the not-quite-human never ceases! First up, Wyatt describes the legend of a monster terrorizing Maryland, the sounds that a man-goat might make, and the angst inherent in being a human. He also expresses his deep passion for classic science fiction and fantasy. Next, Jake gets back on his shit again, recounting even more encounters with gaunt, pale humanoids stalking the roads of the American northeast, including a child's drawing that REALLY doesn't help make these things less creepy. All this, plus some more Chicago Phantom shenanigans, and a brief appearance from a very special musical guest, on this week's Superduperstitious! 15 Mar 2018 | Episode 22 – Getting Jack'd | 01:00:43
Phantoms abound in this fright-filled episode! After a correction to last week's story that makes it somehow even more upsetting to the boys, Jake discusses a bandage-covered spook that haunts a lonely Oregon road. Whether it's attacking cars while young couples are tryna smash, or crabwalking in and out of your kitchen at night, you're gonna have a bad time. Wyatt then takes us on an enlightening trip to Victorian London to learn all about a plague of encounters with a fiendish high jumper. Who's that devilish, ghostly bear who scratches and takes off into the air? (Jack!) You're damned right. This episode has spooks, but don't worry — it's all over in approximately 243 Lord's Prayers. 22 Mar 2018 | Episode 23 – Dragonfly Sounds 4 Kidz | 00:58:34
Well if it isn't another new episode! This week, Wyatt jumps on that opening-update-segment-train with some ghastly tales of Spring Heeled Jack's move to America, where he gets into some very specific routines. Wyatt then segues into a series of sightings involving a weird little monstermajig that is equally at home in the Massachusetts and Ontario suburbs as it is in Native American mythology. Just keep your cats away from the river. Jake's then proves that he hasn't told his dumbest story yet, because he hasn't told THIS story yet. Specifically, he talks about some giant stick figures that are apparently just walking around in the world. All that, plus a series of children's videos that could only be part of a dadaist art project — all on this week's Superduperstitious! 29 Mar 2018 | Episode 24 – Cephalopodcast | 01:04:10
The legends are true! Specifically the ones about there being a new episode of Superduperstitious. After checking in again on the British Invasion (the Spring Heeled Jack one, that is), the boys examine some longstanding, almost elemental legends from different parts of the world. First, Jake describes the mysterious Dark Watchers who lurk on ridges in Big Sur, being dark, and watching stuff. No clue what they are, but at this point, there's no ruling out even urRu as a possibility. Then Wyatt takes a plunge into the history and biology of a well known but never-not-awesome sea monster. THE sea monster, really. Plus a squid in an ice cream cone! It's all there, along with some Steinbecks and a rousing game of Shadowlands Roulette, all on this week's Superduperstitious! 05 Apr 2018 | Episode 25 – Calendar Birthday | 01:13:27
Has it really been a whole year? No? Well the boys have an anniversary of sorts to celebrate nonetheless, and they do it with a return to some spooky favorites! Wyatt takes us down Sasquatch Lane with some convincing accounts of Florida's Myakka skunk ape. Now you, too, can learn it's snappy catchphrase! Jake then finally cuts to the chase with all his weeks of ghoul talk by covering the actual ghoul of Arabian folkore. Ultimately, cultures around the world just aren't super into eating people, okay guys? Stay out of the swamp! Stay out of the desert! Stay out of your backyard! 12 Apr 2018 | Episode 26 – Swarovski Skulls | 00:58:31
This week, it's all about them artifact facts! The mysterious relics in question have some pretty far out stories behind them, and the boys are determined to dig in deep. First up, Jake tells the tale of a crystal cranium thought to be sacred to the Mayans, or maybe not. Part of a supposed set of thirteen skulls scattered across the globe, could this polished piece of quartz be the key to immense cosmic power? What does 19th century Germany have to say on the matter? Wyatt then details the curious Voynich manuscript, a dense and illustrated scientific textbook or possibly an early version of Playboy that, either way, has baffled linguists and cryptographers for ages. 19 Apr 2018 | Episode 27 – Mmm. tuberculosis! | 00:54:15
It's a health-conscious week as the boys embark on a superstition-fueled journey into New England's past. After an apropos Springheeled Jack update in Cape Cod, Wyatt retells the listener-suggested story of a vampirism scare during the 19th century. However, these vampires just make you cough and die. And are also already dead? And not real. Jake then follows the specific account of a supposedly possessed teenager who was a perfect case study for why proper mental health treatment compels you far more than the power of Christ does. And don't even START on witches. All this, plus a complete failure to say the actual word that the show's title is based on — this week on Superduperstitious! 26 Apr 2018 | Episode 28 – Things That Go "Bump" in the Lake | 01:05:50
Somehow it took 28 episodes to finally get around to covering lake monsters, but here we are! And don't you worry: this one's got more logs and waves and misidentified loons than you can shake a moose at. Jake starts off with a famous serpentine creature from a British Columbia lake, and while he may not be so convinced of its supernatural origins, he ends up a true believer in its power to make videos of its likeness vanish from the internet. Then, on the other side of a thrilling game of Shadowlands Roulette, Wyatt takes us into the deepest reaches of the Congo Basin to search for a legendary relic from a lost world. There's dinosaurs in them thar hills! Also, huge bats are still apparently doing stuff in Chicago, so that comes up, too. 03 May 2018 | Episode 29 – International Mans of Mystery | 00:52:05
For us humans, it stands to reason that oodles of spooky stories focus on beings that are MOSTLY human, but not quite enough for comfort. It's certainly the case on this week's episode! Wyatt first tries his hand at a Crawler update, and it's as creepy as should be expected for those pale, lanky bastards. Then in his main story, Wyatt covers encounters around the world with an entity whose heels might be described as decidedly... spring-like? Sleeping under the stars just got a whole lot scratchier. Jake follows up with the curious case of the Bunny Man, a tale that is part strange-but-true, part decidedly false, and part "oh God why is it walking like that OH NO IT SEES ME". Listen, if everyone who goes under a specific bridge at midnight on Halloween always dies gruesomely, maybe don't do that? 10 May 2018 | Episode 30 – NOW That's What I Call Spooky Spots! 2018 | 00:59:30
The world sure does seem to have a lot of haunted places in it, huh? Like, at least several. And not all of them are even houses or abandoned prisons! This week, the boys look at two such creepy locales. First, however, Jake dives into an extra-long and extra-horror-movie-ish update on the Phantom of the Chicago, which has made its way to Wisconsin in order to cockblock some college kids. From there, it's off to a stretch of road in Mission, Texas, where bicyclists don't care for vehicular manslaughter and sometimes people nap in strange ways. We're looking at you, Casey. Next, we visit the Lowlands of Scotland as Wyatt describes a creepy castle and its dark, ghoulish secret. The type of secret that ultimately seems like way more trouble to keep than not, but that's really up to the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Stay out of the secret passages and tell us: What is That Fog? It's time for another episode of Superduperstitious! 17 May 2018 | Episode 31 – Et tu, E.T.? | 00:51:29
It's high time Superduperstitious took another look skyward, so this week's episode once again handles those interplanetary interlopers, extraterrestrials! Wyatt's up first, with the truly astonishing account of a visit to a Russian park that 40 or so locals would never forget. From documentaries full of comically overacted accents to some silent miming on an audio-only format, this story really has it all. Certainly it has those two things. Jake then brings us into the present with a somewhat unique abduction event from only a couple of months ago. Have you recently rendered yourself sterile because you didn't care whether or not you rendered yourself sterile? These helpful aliens might just have a solution for you! Try not to overheat your big rig, and don't be too afraid of geometry — an all-new Superduperstitious starts right now! 31 May 2018 | Episode 32 – The Vegetable Golem of Mouse Mouth | 01:12:44
Would it really be an episode of Superduperstitious without some monsters? Perhaps. But it wouldn't be THIS episode. That's because this episode is full of chlorophyllic creepers and a whole dang family of Sasquatches! Out of the gates, Jake recounts a history of sightings involving a mysterious mossy individual in Florida. An ancient elemental being? Pop culture inspired mass hysteria? A sentient farmer's market? You decide! Wyatt then recites Albert Ostman's very sober account of a completely bonkers experience. Then again, maybe nothing phases you when you routinely carry 80 pounds of gear into the Canadian wilderness alone to go on a prospecting "vacation". This episode is best enjoyed while being stalked in a bayou or while eating an entire box of snuff — try it out right now! 08 Jun 2018 | Episode 33 – There Are No Moose | 01:04:47
Without a specific theme to this week's episode, ANYTHING can happen! But really just two things happen. Wyatt hits us with an abduction experience that he initially thought would be a Springheeled Jack encounter (Jack was of course too busy eating Scully Joes with the Devil to bother these specific fishermen in Mississippi). Don't believe the eyewitnesses? Just ask Puddin'! Puddin's dead now, but he was a fine man. Jake then relays three creepy, unique nighttime encounters with some horrifying monsters. Watch as white people jump to conclusions. All that, plus a listener's creepy clown surprise! 14 Jun 2018 | Episode 34 – Bah! Hum-Buzz | 01:01:44
29 more episodes deep since their first sound adventure and Wyatt and Jake are again reminded that podcasts are in fact an audio-based medium. In that case, it's time for some more auditory strangeness! Jake opens with talk of a persistent, mysterious rumbling heard all around the world — though only by 2% or so of the population. What is the source of The Hum? Is there any way to stop it? Does it just not know the lyrics or something? One harrowing game of Shadowlands Roulette later, Wyatt revisits the Cuban sonic attacks, which are still probably not sonic attacks and now also not in Cuba. Are folks just hitting their heads left and right, or is something more espionage-y going on? 21 Jun 2018 | Episode 35 – Terrordactyls | 00:57:00
It would be a rare day indeed that Superduperstitious would fail to pay lip service to some ancient reptilian friends. Luckily, one such creature made it even easier by paying a visit of its own, in this case to the town of Van Meter, Iowa. Wyatt's got it covered, with a complete account of those strange few nights back at the turn of the century, along with a pretty good idea of what bees probably taste like. Then, another accursed round of Shadowlands Roulette hangs heavy on the boys' souls, but after a narrow escape, Jake is ready to recount a Redditor's rendezvous with something freaky somewhere south of the border. Best to keep some partial glasses of water all over the house for good measure. 28 Jun 2018 | Episode 36 – Howlers, Whistlers, and Cabin Smashers | 01:01:49
This week, it's an adventure into the woods for some ridiculous rigatoni! Jake leads Wyatt through the rambling yet flowery tale of "The Beast of the Land Between the Lakes and Specifically the Forest but in Kentucky", or whatever it's called. Never fear: a dozen or so coroners are here! Wyatt then follows up with a much more sober series of accounts dealing with a race of apelike creatures around Mount St. Helens over the range of a century. When in doubt, sing, damn it, sing! Though it won't make your cabin any less flammable. Thrill as an expert skier vanishes without a trace! Throw up a completely unnecessary number of times! Learn what the word "mordant" means! 13 Jul 2018 | Episode 37 – Water: We Talking About | 00:57:06
Superduperstitious is splashing into summer with some sea-inspired stories! Or at least, that was the plan. Wyatt starts us off, covering a just kind of vaguely water-adjacent topic: a series of monsters in Australia that may all be one and the same, and not just in the "sticking them all together into one mess of an animal" way that some of the tales might suggest. Plus Jake invents the very worst cocktail and then conflates Irish and Scots Gaelic consonant pronunciations like some kind of IDIOT. As consolation, he offers the account of the doomed S.S. Ourang Medan, along with possible explanations as to what may have happened to the crew — and aided briefly by musical friend of the show, Tom Waits. 27 Jul 2018 | Episode 38 – "Weapon of Choice by Fatboy Slim" by Christopher Walken | 00:58:58
It's gross bug week on Superduperstitious, because why the hell not? Both Jake and Wyatt independently and accidentally land on stories involving giant, creepy, wormlike creatures, and by some additional coincidence, these creatures also happen to both be found in the general vicinity of eastern Asia. First up is Jake with a deadly worm in the Gobi Desert, which either murders the crap out of anyone or anything unlucky enough to encounter it, or it's a different thing that doesn't do those things, or it doesn't exist. At least it won't interfere with your spice mining. Wyatt then leads us out into the ocean to hunt for either a terrifying marine arthropod, or else some kind of cursed walrus. At any rate, keep the family jewels away from the seafloor and/or the bottom of your aquarium. Wow, we really went all-in on gross, squirmy creatures this week, didn't we? Yes. Yes we did. Why? 09 Aug 2018 | Episode 39 – Gullible's Travels Part I: Liar, Liar, Pants on Wire | 00:58:06
Here at Superduperstitious, it's our goal to separate fact from stupid ol' poopy dumb stuff, but it's not always so simple. Sometimes phenomena can be all but completely debunked, and folk'll still cling to beliefs no matter how much evidence there is against them. To that end, it's time for another Superduperstitious Special Report! In the first installment of this two-parter, Wyatt talks up the disembodied pants that are the Fresno Nightcrawlers. Behold the 5 or 6 pixels of video evidence and decide for yourself if these legs are ALIEN legs! Jake then tries his hand at describing the biggest, famousest, tiredest U.F.O. tale of them all, and why everyone's so hung up on this one town in New Mexico in spite of there being no story and no interest until 30 years after the inciting incident. But maybe this one's aliens, too. And there's a whole lot more in store next time — aliens are just the beginning on this week's deep dive into bogus beliefs! 06 Sep 2018 | Episode 41 – Tales from the Crypt(ozoology Conference) | 00:59:54
The boys have finally gone out and done something interesting! Or at least, kind of interesting. Either way, they're sure gonna share it with you! But not before a long awaited update on those creepy bat monsters in the Chicago area — Jake walks us through Lon's overarching theory, and why that theory is so phantom-shit crazy as to ALMOST make these updates no fun anymore. ALMOST. Wyatt shares a first look at some of the Fearsome Critters with the legend of the Gumberoo, which is, if possible, actually EVEN dumber than its name might suggest. Wyatt and Jake are also plagued by not one but TWO rounds of Shadowlands Roulette, and conclude the ep with a recap of their trip to the 3rd Annual International Cryptozoology Conference in Portland, ME (and a plea for $12,000). It probably says a lot that a "freeform" episode of this show is the most structured, properly segmented episode yet. In any case, you're in for one fun episode of Superduperstitious! It's another one about urban legends. What more do you need to know? If you want another whole elaborate, silly teaser thing, I'll write it, but like, you could just be listening already, you know? Fine. This week, Wyatt digs into the several-centuries-long mystery of Canada's Nova Scotia's Oak Island's Money Pit, also just called "The Oak Island Money Pit" apparently. What exactly the hell is buried down those hundreds of feet of now constantly flooded tunnel, and will it prove once and for all that Shakespeare's plays were originally written in Wingings? Jake then heads west to Turnbull Canyon, where either a nightmarish cacophony of constant paranormal horrors has been happening for ages, or nothing at all is or ever was happening other than it being a pleasant place for a hike. Kinda seems to be the way of things on this show, huh? 04 Oct 2018 | Episode 43 – Ghost Guest Good Times | 00:47:46
October on Superduperstitious can mean only one thing: desperately trying to create Halloween content that stands out from the rest of the year! The solution? A whole month’s worth of special guests, with their own spooky tales to tell! Up first is dear friend of the show LINDSAY, who has four ghostly encounters to share. Shadow men? Spectral watchers? Cats with bowling balls? You decide! Jake then follows with a short account that will make your skin, shall we say, CRAWL? Because… it’s a thing about… a Crawler? Do… do you get it? Not to be out-predictable-ed, Wyatt then draws a Sasquatch story completely by chance. Basically everything you should expect when you ask these chumps each to pick a story to share. All that, plus some casual references to Episodes 3, 22, 6, 10, and 33 — all without actually SAYING which episodes were being referenced! A whole year deep, and these guys are almost ready to start getting the hang of this. Hide under the covers and don’t drop your mail, because Halloween Month on Superduperstitious is just getting started! 11 Oct 2018 | Episode 44 – Seacoast, See Ghost | 00:58:41
October continues, and so do the guests! This week, author, historian, folklorist, tour guide, and all-around cool person ROXIE ZWICKER joins the show to recount hauntings around Portsmouth, NH. That, and a story about a cow that will change your life forever. Wyatt then chimes in with his own dark tale of the Seacoast region, the Smuttynose murders (which is definitely not pre-recorded). While not quite supernatural itself, it’s still creepy and true-crime-y, and you people like that stuff, don’t you? Listen along to a story of betrayal and axe hackin’ — or, if you prefer, a tragedy about a man who was unable to extract money from his former friends’ heads. Jake then concludes with the famous story of Ocean Born Mary (also not pre-recorded), a pretty fanciful local legend that may or may not be full of holes. At least her ocean-born-ness still seems to hold up. Dig up the whole backyard, and for goodness’ sake, give that lady your fish — it’s time for another episode of Superduperstitious! The October Interview Spectacular™®© is still going strong on Superduperstitious, and this time, it hits a little closer to home! But also it was an hour drive to do it? But yeah. It’s good. Guest KAYLA GODDU carries the episode today with a chronology of ghostly occurrences in her house growing up, which was also Jake’s house growing up, because she is his sister. THRILL as a series of seemingly innocuous but strange goings-on gradually give way to complete, Wyatt-chilling terror! REJOICE as a Chad gets his just desserts! 25 Oct 2018 | Episode 46 – The Hostess with the Ghostest | 00:53:06
For October’s final guest, Superduperstitious is visited by SARA JONES, host of the podcast Laughing in the Dark! Sara shares some strange experiences had on her own show, plus a pair of eerie stories from her childhood (did you know that she can sense boobs?). Sara and Wyatt also set aside some time to shit on Jake for calling a piece of ghost hunting gear a K2 meter, despite the fact that THAT’S WHAT IT’S ACTUALLY CALLED, GUYS. Finally, Jake and Wyatt each share a couple of incredibly stupid stories from Reddit, because for every treat, there is an equal and opposite trick. You asked for lost cities, so we give you… towns! That’s right: this week on Superduperstitious, it’s all about vanishing villages and missing municipalities. Wyatt leads with a Pennsylvania town that is actively disappearing to this very day. No matter how festive you’re feeling, maybe just don’t set that much stuff on fire, yeah? Also catch Wyatt’s eerie firsthand experience passing through the location that influenced one of the most popular survival horror video game franchises ever! Or at least the dumb movie spinoff thereof. Jake then confuses buttons and rings as he attempts to tell the history of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, which may in fact be not so much “lost” as “misplaced”. For all the mess they’d eventually make, Europeans sure had a hard time colonizing at first. 22 Nov 2018 | Episode 49 – [Elk bugling intensifies] | 00:58:00
If we know one thing at Superduperstitious, it’s that animals are weird. They act weird, sometimes they look weird, and frequently they sound weird. So imagine how weird CRYPTIDS must sound! Or just listen to this episode, because that’s what it’s about. But first, it’s another update on that pesky Midwestern bat thing, the Phantom of the Chicago! The saga seemingly never ends, to the point where the boys may just have to take matters into their own hands. After that, however, you’d better believe there are some spooky forest sounds afoot, and Knightsbridge Consulting is here to take care of them! Travel with Jake to British Columbia, routinely insist on calling a town by the incorrect name, and maybe, just maybe, track down the creature behind all this. At the very least, aim to briefly look like Ziggy Stardust. Wyatt rounds out the ep with a series of crazy and creepy animal sounds from around the world, to show just how easy it would be for your imagination to run wild in the woods at night. He also revisits Awee Kids for a series of increasingly questionable animal sound demonstrations. Beat up some hunters and watch out for sky whales — spooky sounds await you on Superduperstitious! 06 Dec 2018 | Episode 50 – We Want to Believe Part I: Pseudo | 00:47:29
Halfway to a hundred eps, and it’s time for the boys to bite the hand that feeds them with another two-part deep dive! Specifically, it’s a look at the pseudoscience behind everything this show is about. It’ll be fun! Wyatt kicks off Part I with some cryptozoology goodness. Whether it's reputable publications gleefully fanning the flames of belief, or fancy-ass websites touting their fancy-ass research tools, monster hunting has some major methodological mishaps. But at least they sell cool hats. Jake then takes things in a ghostlier direction with a look at paranormal investigations. Luckily, it’s an easy field to get into, as long as you have gadgets. Doesn’t matter what they do. Just have ’em. You’ll do fine. 05 Jan 2019 | Episode 52 – The Man from Another Place | 00:44:25
We’re entering parallel universes and hidden worlds galore on this week’s episode of Superduperstitious! But probably not. But maybe! First we hear from Jake, with the story of a bizarre encounter in a Japanese airport in the 1950s. Flying was so much less strict back then: you didn’t have to take your shoes off when you went through security, you could smoke on the plane, and you could have a passport from a country that doesn’t exist (unfortunately, the latter MIGHT cause you to be detained and then to vanish into thin air). Then, following a long overdue round of Shadowlands Roulette, Wyatt tells of the Green Children of Woolpit. Who were these mysterious children who spoke a different language and had no idea how beans work? Aliens? Extradimensional beings? Malnourished immigrant children who were lost? Nah, that last one is too farfetched. We’ve got good news! That gum you like is going to come back in style, on an all-new episode of Superduperstitious. 02 Feb 2019 | Episode 53 – The Phantom of the Chicago: Part a Billion | 00:59:30
Holy crap, it's another episode! This show truly is still a thing that exists. The boys have a lot of catching up to do together, and it involves revisiting some interesting past stories of the spooky and strange. For starters, Wyatt aims to put the Cuban sonic attack conspiracy to bed once and for all, but the plot insists on continuing to thicken. With so many technologies out there for microwaving heads and looking at babies (but ideally not for microwaving babies), it seems like anything could be possible. Or, again, maybe it's bugs. Jake, meanwhile, is as on-brand as ever with an entire full-length segment devoted to America's favorite winged flesh-like creature, The Phantom of the Chicago. People around Lake Michigan haven't stopped seeing the giant humanoid bat monster, so these updates are going to JUST. KEEP. COMING. It’s spooky in the bedroom once again on Superduperstitious! Jake leads off by describing an entity seen around the world by people who mostly just want to get some damned sleep. Who is the mysterious Hat Man? Why is he wearing a hat? What kind of hat is it? Were trench coats really THAT popular in the 1700s? Then, after a quick ethological look at the well known instinctive flight or fuck response, Wyatt asks for Jake’s help in rating a series of answers to the age old question, “Have you ever woken up randomly in the middle of the night, feeling the presence of someone or something else with you in the room?” Which of these answers will receive a “Negative Boo”, which will just get a 3 or something, and which will get the coveted “Yikes”? If you go down to the woods today, you’re in for a big surprise. If you go down to the woods today, you’ll hear from two nerdy guys — it’s another forest-centered episode of Superduperstitous! Wyatt leads the way with some alarming encounters had by various survivalists in the great outdoors, and learns that Jake has terrible survival instincts. What would YOU do if your flashlight revealed the reflection of a pair of eyes in the darkness? Freeze in your tracks? Try to get closer? Poop? Next, Jake recounts some currently ongoing terror in the taiga with one teenage Redditor’s tale of SOMETHING chasing her through the woods near her house. Tall, grey, humanoid, and accompanied by the sound of rattling chains, Glitter Sprinkles is not likely be her new best friend anytime soon. That said, if you absolutely have to get murdered by a monster, it’s best to at least keep the internet apprised. Did you know that you can get a degree in intergalactic politics? Incidentally, did you also know that you can go on long weekend retreats to one of Jupiter’s moons? And did you know that humans are descended from 12 or more different extraterrestrial races? Jake didn’t know any of that, but if you believe it, he’s got a xendra to sell you! Wyatt then cranks up the excitement by talking about a really neat rock. It’s great, this rock. ’S from a couple years ago. Wyatt talks up the Bennington Triangle, a decidedly non-triangular region in Vermont known for some creepy disappearances, with likely ties to the Big Bad Wolf and some lethal hugs. Never leave your children unattended while your pigs are unfed. Jake then reads another overwritten account of a kooky occurrence in Florida, but this time it involves a carnivorous pink mist floating around and eating everything. What’s the point believing in spirits and such if it doesn’t involve those spirits being super scary and wanting to mess with us? Thankfully, that’s what demons are for — and what this ep is all about! Jake attempts to break the mold a bit with a non-Christian take on these dark forces, paying a visit to an Algonquin reservation and its spooky run-in with a malevolent entity a few years ago. Call it a kokogi, call it a window-tapping jerk — just don’t expect it to wipe that smug grin off its face. And feel free to just lock it in your cabin I guess. Wyatt then digs into the history, psychology, and prevalence of the positively marvelous phenomenon that is demonic possession. Not “marvelous” in the sense of “wonderful” — unless it’s “wonderful” in the sense of “astounding”. And definitely “astounding” in the sense of “incredible”, but not “incredible” in the sense of “awesome”, except if it's “awesome” in the sense of “marvelous”. Another year of podcasting means Jake and Wyatt are eager to get fully back on their bullshit. And back on their bullshit is exactly where they go this week. Wyatt feeds his Sasquatch addiction with another trip Down Under, this time to look at the yowie of Australian lore. The eyewitnesses seem credible, the phylogeography has Jake more open minded, and you’d best believe everyone’s looking for that penis. Next, Jake gets ghoulish once again, with a pair of related sightings posted to Reddit. While you refrain from calling anyone a copper nanotube, ponder this: what the goddamned hell was outside that window every night? 11 Apr 2019 | Episode 61 – The Kangaroo Event | 00:55:02
Any strange story is fair game this week, so the boys tackle some slightly more famous freak occurrences. Jake kicks it off with some obligatory updates on the bat problems of the midwest, followed by a decidedly offbeat creature encounter from that same region in the 1970s. Meet the Enfield Horror, a creature of improbable anatomy and ill temper that terrorized a tiny Illinois town for a few weeks before vanishing forever, unless it’s still lurking there to this day (it’s not), because it was totally real the whole time (it wasn’t). You can shoot it, but it will just come back and loiter in your yard. Wyatt then takes us to Siberia at the turn of the 20th century, where a massive explosion leveled enormous swathes of forest and baffled scientists for decades to come. Was it a meteor that exploded before landing? Did real scientists actually suggest that it was a miniature black hole magically appearing? And did they really publish that theory in the most respected journal in the world? 26 Apr 2019 | Episode 63 – Spontaneous Human Combustion: R.I.P. Lorraine Warren | 00:49:25
Rainy day doldrums got you down? That’s no reason not to disrespect the dead! This week’s theme is seemingly paranormal medical phenomena, and Jake opens with a description of near-death experiences. What happens if you go toward the light? IS there really a light to go toward? And is Macho Man Randy Savage really waiting for you at the end of it? The boys then pay their respects to the late medium/demonologist/book and movie mogul Lorraine Warren (and the even later Ed Warren) in very, very tasteful fashion. It’s a struggle not to cry as they recount their favorite Warren cases, how totally real those cases were, and how much they’ve always seen the Warrens as upstanding members of society. Wyatt finishes things off with the frightening and mysterious phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion. Can you really just suddenly become on fire? How long has this been happening to you? Is there a history of bursting into flames in your family? I’m going to recommend that you take two lit cigarettes to bed and telegraph me in the morning. Grab a box of tissues and a fire extinguisher and STAY WITH US — IT’S NOT YOUR TIME YET! Instead, it’s time for another episode of Superduperstitious! It’s always bugs o’clock here at Superduperstitious, because why the hell not? After some passing yeti news, Wyatt opens with an increasingly uncomfortable tale of giant spiders in Mozambique. Is the j’ba fofi really out there? If so, it may bite your butt and make you die. And if not, you can still learn about all the other unholy arachnid abominations that definitely DO crawl across our world right now AND PROBABLY RIGHT BEHIND YOU OH GOD DID YOU FEEL THAT ON YOUR LEG AHHHHHH. Jake then takes to the air with rods, also known as sky fish, also known as solar entities, also known as SUPER REAL. Follow these mysterious creatures from their discovery in the mid-nineties all the way to their journey’s end approximately ten years later. It’s a good time. And definitely not a flying squid. Guys, just because you caught someone eating a bird ONCE doesn’t give you the right to make that name follow them forever. Crank up your shutter speed and tune in for this week’s Superduperstitious! 09 May 2019 | Episode 65 – Don't Go There. | 00:52:32
Spooky spots! Again! Kind of! This week is all about visits to mysterious locations and the mysterious mysteries that happen there — MYSTERIOUSLY. After some requisite bat shit, Jake leads off with the curious case of Devil’s Kettle Falls in Minnesota, where half of a river apparently falls into oblivion. Where does all that water actually go? Can any natural phenomenon explain its apparent failure to reappear? How many cars do we have to cram into the thing to solve this?! Wyatt then covers something ALMOST as chilling as disappearing water: disappearing people. Travel to Black Mountain in Queensland, Australia (but don’t) to see what happens if you wander inside this spooky pile o’ rocks (but probably don’t). What could possibly go wrong in a mountain that moans? Here at Superduperstitious, we know just what sort of entertainment you crave from a podcast: high quality geology content. 16 May 2019 | Episode 66 – Timeless Cool | 01:02:04
Pyramid power! Greek robots! Other Ancient Aliens bait! It can mean only one thing: tech tales from antiquity on Superduperstitious! Wyatt kicks it off with a perhaps less well known conspiracy surrounding the Great Pyramid of Giza. And it’s not even the Daniel Jackson kind! Instead, it’s the one where the pyramid is actually a giant electrical power plant, one that a future David Bowie character could be proud of. And the weirdest part? There is a downright stupid amount of plausibility to this one. Jake then gives us robots through the ages — Italian robots, a boat that totally doesn’t just sink, Hero’s high-speed porn tower — all the hits! And these babies are fully programmable, with not one sign of Skynet crap. 23 May 2019 | Episode 67 – Sadventure Time | 00:57:49
We all make mistakes. They don’t always involve depleting all breathable oxygen from a living space or disappearing forever into the jungle, but still. Accordingly, this ep is all about science mistakes! After a buzzy update from Cuba/Wyatt, Jake tells the tale of the ambitious but ill fated Biosphere 2, an early ’90s experiment (read “publicity stunt”) that actually could have been really cool. Sadly, a lack of adequate technical consideration kept the habitat from realizing its full potential, and that’s how you get ants. And cockroaches. And almost suffocate everybody. Wyatt then takes us back in time to the antics of Percy Fawcett, who simply couldn’t get enough of that tasty, tasty Amazon rain forest. So much so that he is STILL THERE TO THIS DAY. He may have brought back numerous reports of patently ridiculous animals, and vanished while searching for the so called Lost City of Z, but at least he wasn’t secretly doing something WEIRD, like attempting to help humankind ascend to a higher plane by initiating with transdimensional beings… right? Also, Jake and Wyatt discuss the key differences between poison and venom, and their plans for an upcoming stage play production. There’s no time like the present for getting back on our shit, and that shit, of course, is monsters. After another rousing edition of The Quaff (AND another audio-based update), Wyatt has some frogs for us. And not just any frogs — it’s the Loveland Frogmen! Or possibly a weirdly upright iguana. But most likely a Sleestak. Just whatever you do, watch out for their wand (???). Jake then takes us into a stranger’s backyard to be stared at for four years. It’s ABSOLUTELY CHILLING. 06 Jun 2019 | Episode 69 – Nice | 00:55:28
Things were feeling just TOO SANE around here, so it’s once again conspiracy time on Superduperstitious! Following a few words from some podcast pals, Jake leads in with a story he thought had been put to bed, but which instead proved to be decidedly still up and about and wanting a glass of water and a midnight snack and SOME ANSWERS, DAMN IT. How did the 2008 appearance of a dead raccoon on a beach on Long Island cause over a decade of freaking out? Because it looked weird and it was in Montauk — what more reason do you need? Then, after a mandated segment of drinking godawful cocktails, Wyatt tells the story of David Icke, former footballer and conspiracy theorist extraordinaire. Yep, he’s the “lizard people control the world” guy. Yep, a whole damned lot of people believe his stuff. The least we can do is see what he’s on about! 14 Jun 2019 | Episode 70 – The 411 Part I: How to Disappear Completely | 00:57:19
You ever find some people get really lost? David Paulides sure notices, and so came the Missing 411 book series and general conspiracy phenomenon. And so begins this deep dive! In the first installment of this Missing 411 two-parter, Wyatt recounts the tragic case of Dennis Martin, a young boy who seemingly vanished into thin air. That is, unless he was ABDUCTED BY A SASQUATCH. Or by a deranged, non-speaking hill person? Certainly no other, more rational explanations exist. Jake then presents one man’s account of what happened to him on a camping trip some twenty years ago, and it MAY HOLD THE KEY TO THE MYSTERY OF WHAT EVIL LURKS OUT IN THOSE WOODS. But if you shake your dad real good it’ll go away. Could we be one step closer to understanding what is happening to all these missing folks? 20 Jun 2019 | Episode 71 – The 411 Part II: The 4-1-1 | 01:01:21
Part II of this Superduperstitious Special Report seeks to finally answer the age-old question: Why come all these peoples be missing? Last week, we heard about the disappearance of a small child and the watertight case for his having been abducted by a Sasquatch, instead of something real happening to him. We also heard the account of one teen’s near miss when he almost got 411’d SO HARD by a phantom woman in the woods. Luckily, a former police detective is on the case, gathering just the facts and definitely not fabricating a conspiracy in order to sell books. And now this week, it’s science time! In this conclusive installment, Wyatt and Jake break down the mythos behind the Missing 411 phenomena, examine real Search and Rescue protocol, and try in vain to enjoy a beer without being interrupted by haunted casino game paraphernalia. 27 Jun 2019 | Episode 72 – Have Doughnut | 00:57:06
The world is full of weird, and Superduperstitious is determined to visit it all! To that end, here are a couple more stops along that journey through the strange. First, Jake takes us to Siberia, 1989, where Soviet scientists dug a hole ALL THE WAY TO HELL. Did their borehole really reach something infernal? The intense heat they encountered might have something to say about it, as would the screaming OH DEAR GOD THE SCREAMING. But also fact-checking is a thing, though surely that has no relevance here. At any rate, stay tuned for a surprise non-appearance by special guest Tom Waits! Following a hearty beer review that was definitely not pre-recorded, Wyatt ventures to Nevada, home to the most famous of all top secret locations: Area 51. Full of aliens, secrets, and secret aliens, Area 51 sure is a secretive, alien-ful place! That, or maybe experimental military technology is just something that it makes sense to hide from the general public? Nah, it's for sure all aliens. Superduperstitious is back at it again! And “it”, in this particular instance, means “supernatural/ghosty stories”. Superduperstitious is back at supernatural/ghosty stories again. It works. Wyatt leads in, first with a PSA about being Satan (don’t), then with the SOUL-WRENCHING TERROR that is the Hotel Monte Vista. This Arizona getaway contains very nearly a dozen ghosts, and all of them DO STUFF, which is of course, just, so scary. And all the staff are great with babies. Then, following an extra special update on the Phantom of the Chicago (featuring none other than the Fire Killa himself), Jake explores the phenomenon of the witching hour. If you thought this podcast was above exploiting the cuteness of a baby animal for attention, think again! And while you’re at it, here’s an episode all about dog-related stuff. Exhausted new puppy parent Wyatt begins with a few accounts of the White Things of West Virginia, also known as Sheepsquatch (and also apparently sometimes called Devil Dogs, but you won’t find that out until well after the fact). Is it a bear? Is it a different, older bear? Whatever it is, it’s got some stank. Following a definitely-not-pre-recorded segment of The Quaff, Jake treads some familiar ground on just two legs. That’s right: even more upright canine tales! Gird your car’s loins as you fumble for your keys, and when in doubt, make a break for the tree line. Watch out for rogue waves and try to outrun your shadow, it’s time for some international tales! (Note: If the episode prompt is “the British Isles”, don’t be surprised when both hosts just pick Scotland.) After a noisy revisit to what was once believed to be bugs, Jake mounts an expedition to the Cairngorms, the favored haunt of An Fear Liath Mòr, The Big Grey Man. There are many opinions on what this frightening figure lurking atop Ben Macdui might be, but one thing’s for sure: finding out will involve a lot of embarrassing impersonations. A brand new recurring segment follows, in which Wyatt and Jake find a new use for the NCAAA, the arcane computer they built/summoned back in Episode 60. After that, Wyatt takes us to the Outer Hebrides (pronounced HEE-bryedz) to investigate the mysterious disappearance of the lighthouse keepers of Eilean Mòr. August Around the World continues, this time in Africa! After a bit of clarification RE: the Fire Killer (namely the fact that Wyatt and Jake are not him), Wyatt takes off into the forests of the Congo River basin in search of an elusive ape. And this time, it’s not even an upright one! This is the story of how sometimes the legends really ARE true. And at the end of the journey, you find a creature that poops just SO big. Jake heads in a different direction, with some botanical buffoonery, namely the so-called Madagascar Devil Tree. Is anyone really surprised that a bunch of white people would totally eat up a story about a tree that totally eats up people? The tale itself may be absurd, but you won’t leave empty-handed! Jake also provides some half-assed science about the world’s REAL carnivorous plants, and then fails to remember the verb “to taper”. 15 Aug 2019 | Episode 78 – Not the Real Sredni Vashtar | 00:53:32
Wyatt and Jake are determined to stick to their month-long prompt of finding stories from all around the world, even if they’re terrible at it. This week, it’s India! Following a quick PANDER session for patrons, Jake continues to use Reddit as a crutch as he just kinda dumps out a series of random stories vaguely connected to the country in question. Haunted objects? Haunted houses? Very tall women? This segment’s got ‘em all, plus a horrible humanoid creature sighting for extra good measure. It’s then time to face the dreaded wheels in a long overdue round of Shadowlands Roulette, but that doesn’t deter Wyatt from proceeding onward to tell the story of some bugs and some music. Turns out, when there are more people around to spread rumors, those rumors spread very effectively. But, like, nobody ENJOYS getting randomly scratched in the face at night, so, you know. Be cautious of any unpainted decorations brought home by family members, and try not to repeat “sanedo sanedo sanedo laal sanedo” TOO many times if you can avoid it. (Although, depending on how close to the release date you happen to catch this episode, Wyatt actually MIGHT be actively in Ontario, so there you go.) ANYWAY, guess what’s back? The Phantom of the Chicago! And guess what it probably still is? Birds! Once the regional fun begins in earnest, Wyatt kicks things off all the way up in Nunavut, with a Baffin Island Inuit creation tale involving familiar lycanthropic imagery. Try to ignore the implications of a human-canine marriage long enough to follow the trail south to Quebec, where Europeans bring… tales of the very same creatures? Remember: the first rule of being a loup-garou is you do NOT talk about being a loup-garou. Jake then heads west all the way to the Pacific, with a Vancouver ghost story that’ll scare the blankets right off of you. If you’re house sitting all alone and start to get creeped out, you’d be wise to leave the lights on — but that may not be enough. Redditors really know how to deliver, don’t they? Keep your tuque on tight so your ears don’t get sickle sliced, and stay away from your aunt’s swimming pool — it’s all aboot the Great White North on this episode of Superduperstitious. So don’t miss it, ya hoser! 29 Aug 2019 | Episode 80 – Below Underneath | 00:54:20
All good things must come to an end, and also so does August Around the World. For the last leg of this particular journey, it’s time to head to Australia! To be fair, this is hardly the show’s first visit to this particular continent (or even its third), but this IS the first trip to Australia that is exclusively about ghost stories! Jake leads off with another Reddit find, because he truly is the worst at finding ghost story sources. Listen to the actually fairly heartwarming tale of a little girl and her perhaps not-so-imaginary friend, and find out whether ghosts die when hit by trucks. Then, after the most chilling round of Shadowlands Roulette to date, Wyatt discusses the Monte Cristo homestead, a place where everyone and their baby gets thrown down the stairs to their death. Does this schmancy old house turned bed and breakfast live up to its reputation as Australia’s most haunted sandwich-named building? For a couple hundred dollarydoos a night, you can find out firsthand! The month-long world tour may be ending, but never fear! There are plenty more adventures ahead. 12 Sep 2019 | Episode 81 – Creature Features Part I: A SciFi Original | 00:58:53
Superduperstitious goes to Hollywood in Part I of another Special Report! After a very important and then suddenly completely pointless PSA, Wyatt leads in with a discussion of mutation in movies. So often the crutch of screenwriters who want a monster and want it NOW, mutation tends to follow a few very specific beats in movies, all of them fun and giggle-worthy. Jake then heads in a more behavioral direction, examining the often biologically illogical ways monsters tend to act in order to serve their narrative purpose. And he manages to do this through somehow mostly dinosaur examples. Have your popcorn handy, keep away from that glowing purple stuff, and get ready for the beginning of a goofy, science-y, and cinematic deep-dive with Superduperstitious! It’s officially the Spooky Times™, and that means the beginning of a full month of awesome guests with tasty tales! First up is JONATHAN KNOTEK, co-founder of Chicago Prohibition Tours and Chicago history guru. You’ll learn all about the city’s mobster-filled past, some of the ghosts that have resulted, and Jonathan’s own potential run-ins with the supernatural. From a banging bust of Harry Caray, to phantom forest lights, to a possible final solution to what actually goes into an Irish Crocodile, this episode’s got it all! 10 Oct 2019 | Episode 84 – Beers for Fears | 01:03:00
The October interviews continue, as does the unintentional “alcohol and spooky stuff” theme of the month so far! For this ep, Wyatt and Jake pay a visit to their favorite brewery (Earth Eagle of Portsmouth, NH) to talk to ALEX and SHERIDAN about their own personal paranormal experiences. And about beer, because duh. Was this whole thing just a thinly-veiled excuse to hang out and drink beer with the people who make it? Or will you be CHILLED TO THE BONE by tales of jingling bells and planking? You’ll just have to listen and find out! Also Jake turns 30 when this is released so that’s cool and not a big deal and certainly not something he would explicitly allude to in the episode description (but like, do you people even read these?). Anyway, crack open a jet-black fortune cookie, try a gruit already, and enjoy another October episode of Superduperstitious! 17 Oct 2019 | Episode 85 – The (Italian) Old Man and the (Adriatic) Sea (Monster) | 00:57:05
Another week in October means another exciting guest, but this episode is doing things a bit differently… The boys head to Springfield, MA to join Italian scholar and Wyatt’s old pal THERESA BERARD, who shares a Dino Buzzati sea monster tale right in Wyatt’s haunted childhood home (see Episode 3). He and Jake are used to doing the reading, but now it’s THEIR turn to have a story read to THEM! And by someone far better prepared than they’re used to being. You’ll hear all about a relentless shark thing that follows its unlucky victim FOREVER, and you’ll marvel at Theresa’s ability to power through in spite of Wyatt’s and Jake’s increasing attempts to derail. And then all three take part in an extra-cursed round of Shadowlands Roulette! Halloween draws ever closer, and the guest appearances get ever more fun — grab some iron or some balls and listen in to this sea-centric ep! 24 Oct 2019 | Episode 86 – T.A.P.S.’d In | 01:05:29
It’s the final Thursday of October before Halloween itself! And you know what that means: there’s time for one last special guest before pulling out all the spook stops next week. Wyatt and Jake are joined by JESS COLE, who tells tales of her own personal haunting experiences and of her five-year tenure with The Atlantic Paranormal Society. Hear all about how she helped hold down the fort while the others were off shooting Ghost Hunters, and just what it takes to scare a pro (hint: it would likely prompt the rest of us to burn down our house and maybe all other houses just as a precaution). Jess offers tips for getting into the field of paranormal investigation, Wyatt digs into the necessary skepticism one has to maintain in this non-science discipline, and Jake loses his entire mind to ’80s movie references. Canine-adjacent stories keep piling up, so it’s time to release the hounds! Except the “hounds” are those aforementioned stories, and “releasing” them is telling them. It’s good! This week, you’ll hear a series of encounters with mysteries dog-looking things, mostly on the side of the road at night, including Wyatt’s own experience! Then, you’ll tuck into a ghastly tale of douchebags and coal furnaces, complete with audio accompaniment. They’re apes. We KNOW. But how often do you hear anyone say “aping around”? I mean REALLY. But yeah! It’s an ape ep for the ages. Wyatt leads off with the story of De Loys’ Ape, and the spooky photo that gave it such staying power. Are there really giant, bipedal humanoid primates lurking in the forests of South America? Just as surely as humans from different continents somehow evolved from different species! (No.) Jake then hops on the hominid fraud train with Piltdown Man, the U.K.’s unfortunate contribution to a European paleontological pissing contest. Sometimes, if you’re looking hard enough for a Missing Link, you’ll accept ANY EVIDENCE that suggests you found it. Even if it comes from a non-scientist known for faking shit. 29 Nov 2019 | Episode 90 – kthx(gvng) bye | 00:55:40
It’s Thanks-friggin-giving, and Wyatt and Jake are thankful for one thing above all else — being together again in the same room! The most obvious way to celebrate this is of course by telling some vaguely holiday-appropriate stories, so that happens. After some much-needed bat updates, Jake hits us with a pair of paranormal accounts that kinda sorta maybe REFERENCE Thanksgiving? Whatever. Just watch out for disappearing, creepy kids in red shirts and horrific, inhuman, staggering grey masses that whisper to you at night. Wyatt heads in another direction entirely, with the history of the fringe Christian belief in the rapture. Are all the good folks gonna get poofed away? Why come everyone don’t believes that? 21 Dec 2019 | Episode 91 – Rat King Cole | 01:07:24
Finally, an episode in December! Is it any surprise that it’s about cryptids? After a lengthy but important update on the Phantom of the Chicago, Wyatt kicks off with the tale of Zana, a supposed ape woman held captive in the most difficult to pronounce reaches of the 19th-century Western Caucasus. Was she really a bipedal ape creature, or were these people just HOLY SHIT THE MOST RACIST MONSTERS IMAGINABLE? Could the answer possibly be anything BUT the latter? Jake then gets German with the Rat King, a ball o’ rat phenomenon believed to occur all the damned time. But are rats REALLY as gross as people want to believe? 27 Dec 2019 | Episode 92 – Because of Scared | 01:06:49
What was meant to be a Boxing Day episode is now a day later, but you know what? It’s still all winter stories, friend! After another installment in the endless tide of Chicago bat goofness, Jake finally yields some ape ground with a few yeti accounts. He may be pretty damned skeptical of it all, but perhaps there is SOME plausibility in them thar hills. However, a bunch of big fish stories from a bunch of overexcited Europeans is ALWAYS something to take with a bunch of grains of salt. Wyatt then takes a page out of Jake’s book and turns to Reddit for some backyard spooks. What horrible shadow creature has glowing yellow eyes and can glide through snow toward your back porch? Could it be a horny mountain lion? This ep is full of goose flesh, people on mountains indistinctly seeing other people on mountains, and all the moose howls you could ask for. 11 Jan 2020 | Episode 93 – 2020 = 20 + 20 | 01:59:00
It’s a brand new year! And what better way for Superduperstitious to start that year than by biting off more than it (or at least Jake) can chew? That’s right, the boys have lost their entire minds and brought you a full FORTY stories throughout one ludicrously jam-packed TWO-HOUR episode, all in overzealous service to a convoluted “2020” theme. You want ghosts? Crawlers? Sasquatches? Gnomes?! They’re all here, baby. And if this ep doesn’t scare you, it’ll at least astonish you with how quickly it loses its way. 17 Jan 2020 | Episode 94 – Strigoi Boiz | 00:52:00
The Boiz are back, just as you’ve always known them and going by that one name you’ve always called them! Thanks to a listener suggestion, this week is one full of not-quite-vampires, and their amazing similarities across cultures! After a positively thrilling update from the show’s official Field Correspondent, Jake starts with the Aswang, one of several billion terrifying mythological creatures to come out of the Philippines. Although both Jake and Wyatt learn that they had totally the wrong idea about what the Aswang is, they are able to at least continue to be creeped out by that damned tongue. So I guess fetuses are safe for now? Wyatt then turns to Romania, not for your standard Transylvanian fare, but instead for some background on the strigoi, a pre-vampire with far more complicated rules and apparently much more involved methods of disposal. 25 Jan 2020 | Episode 95 – Young Santa | 00:44:25
Listener stories are always welcome at Superduperstitious, but not without raising the immortal question: are these stories GOOD? Listener Nick Smith kindly provides a pair of personal accounts of the spooky, so Wyatt and Jake kindly provide feedback on their quality, since that’s what Nick was surely wanting. And they of course achieve this by comparing to some top notch stories from the Website of Only Good Writing, Reddit! Wyatt begins by revisiting sleep paralysis. From ticked off Anubises to cuckolding ghosts, this segment’s got it all. Jake then goes Full Pedantic™ with grammar as he looks into some haunted house happenings. NOTHING is more terrifying than verb/subject agreement. Strap in for some good listening, and consider sending your own tales to contact@superduperstitious.com! Mountains: you can be on them, near them, and maybe even under them if things aren’t going great for you. Here’s an ep about that! Jake’s up first, with both a PSA about not believing every viral video you see AND a story about ghostly experiences in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Is The Presence of Mount Washington real, or are people just freaking themselves out on a windy peak? Nail down a pair of boots and find out! Following an especially visceral round of Shadowlands Roulette, Wyatt describes the Sheppton Mine disaster, complete all the popes that were definitely there and the Louises who definitely weren’t. But who among us hasn’t wanted to make at least A FEW burgers out of our friends and coworkers, I mean REALLY. What even are release dates, anyway? Nobody knows! 23 Feb 2020 | Episode 97 – Fool's Gold | 01:00:30
It’s adventure time once again on Superduperstitious, but that doesn’t mean that those adventures have to have any firm grounding in REALITY. After a quick UK check-in with some genuine archaeological coolness, Wyatt heads to Arizona's Superstition Mountains to examine the Legend of the Lost Dutchman. Sure, all evidence of this particular goldmine is 1000% apocryphal, but why would that stop multiple real people from dying actual deaths in their attempts to find it? This is GOLD we’re talking about! Jake then takes things unintentionally nearby to the Grand Canyon, where, it turns out, all ancient civilizations came from. You want Egyptian mummies? You got ‘em! A generic mishmash of a dozen or more distinct eastern and southern Asian cultures? Coming right up! A whole bunch of scientists in 1909 studying these incredible finds while avoiding a haunted snake pit? Check. It’s all for sure a real thing that happened, and that’s why we all remember it so well! 27 Feb 2020 | Episode 98 – Abject Objects | 01:12:36
We humans sure do make a lotta STUFF, and we like scary stories, so naturally there are plenty of scary stories ABOUT stuff. That’s right, it’s antiquing time on this episode of Superduperstitious! For starters, Jake has the tale of a weird wooden idol found in the Catskill Mountains that seems to be attached to some kind of evil entity. Is The Crone really up to no good and all the time conjuring pond water and shit out of the blue? What, really, is it’s DEAL? Wyatt then slowly cranks up the creeps with a series of cursed paintings, each more unpleasant than the previous. From a flameproof Crying Boy that WAY too many people own, to two successive paintings that have no excuse for existing, the world of household art seems to for sure be a weird place. And maybe the whole justification for eBay’s existence. Ghost stories abound, unexplained occurrences inconvenience various art owners, and Wyatt and Jake reveal a shameful secret about themselves, all in this brand new ep! It’s a new beginning for this here podcast, which we assume means literally doing everything over again from the beginning. In this episode, Wyatt and Jake talk about their favorite cryptids, which they DEFINITELY HAVEN’T already talked about before and SURELY not in the first episode of this show. Rest assured: you’re guaranteed to learn new stuff this time around, like the fact that everything in history is somehow connected to Atlantis, and that when you see an unknown creature, you should check not only its genitals (as discussed many times by now), but also its flaps. That, and you’ll get some pretty straightforward forensic science and predator biology to boot. Episode 200, here we come! 03 Apr 2020 | Episode 102 – Superstitions Part I: Superstitiousness | 00:54:16
It’s Special Report time, mofos! And also long past time that the podcast looked into its namesake. That’s right: this latest two-parter is all about superstitions! And you’d be amazed how hard it is now to type that word normally, without the “duper”. In Part I, Jake covers good luck, Wyatt covers the bad, and they both hit the ugly. On the good luck side, it’s all about salt and how it can ward off evil! But not meta-demons, whatever the goddamned hell those are. Good times! Also: lucky snack bags in Taiwan. On the bad luck side, CURSES. Mummy ones, puberty ones, and all the signs to determine if an evil wizard has given you one. Sorry, not a wizard, a practicer of black majique. Is there any reason NOT to assume that every small inconvenience in your life is connected? We may never truly know. Listen, we’ve been over this before, but it bears repeating: not EVERY episode has to have a theme. Unless of course that theme is random crap! Jake tackles underground spookums, while Wyatt gets a bit more metaphysical on this week’s ep. Remember that time in Episode 62 when Wyatt and Jake picked three random creatures apiece to take turns talking about? Yeah, neither do they. So it’s weird artifacts time instead, and not as many of them! This week, Wyatt’s got a mysterious manuscript and a forgotten language, while Jake describes a weird hammer and struggles to pronounce Aztec names. Presenting the Codex Gigas, the coolest giant old book since the Voynich manuscript, but also older! And don’t get us started on the London Hammer. Is it 100-million-year-old proof of human civilization? 400-million-year-old? And does that make it also proof that the Earth is NOT old? Sometimes, pseudoscience and conspiracy theories are just some goofy, harmless fun. This is not one of those times. Today’s episode is all about giving due diligence to some big names in fringe medical “science” whose dangerous misinformation has caused lasting harm. Meet Andrew Wakefield, the British former doctor who is the sole reason anyone has ever believed in a link between vaccines and autism. How did he reach that conclusion? By lying. For money. Joining him is Judy Mikovits, retrovirus enthusiast who decided to yes-and Wakefield’s work by linking vaccines not only with autism, but with CFS and just about every imaginable cancer, too. Her secret? Also lying. It’s a fraud free-for-all, with some helpful vax facts to boot — all on this week’s Superduperstitious! 30 Jul 2020 | Episode 110 – Where's the Flux? | 00:51:25
Space. The eventual thing we sometimes get around to. These are stories from the podcast Superduperstitious. Their infinite-year mission: to give up on this bit halfway through the paragraph. Just listen to the thing. After a frankly embarrassing 54 episodes (the span, not the episodes), the boys are finally talking about outer space again! Specifically, stuff being built out there. Jake leads the way with the very earnest beliefs of a fella who just can’t take “no, those are visual artifacts because the photos are almost 60 years old” for an answer. Wyatt then journeys to the very catchily named KIC 8462852, where weird light stuff has been happening. Could it be a whole shitload of floating dust? Or could it perhaps be the work of the most insufferable British appliance company of all time? Buckle in, Planet Hunter, and get ready for giant Martian Boy Scouts, ploonets, and the definitive answer to an 80-episode-long mystery – all on a brand new ep of Superduperstitious! 06 Aug 2020 | Episode 111 – I Dream of Djinny | 00:53:30
This is our one hundred and eleventh episode. We are eleventy-one today! What better way to celebrate than to kick off AUGUST AROUND THE WORLD! The first stop on this month-long journey is the Middle East, or rather, the Greater Middle East, beginning with an upright hairy hominid tale from Mr. Shell. Did somebody say, “On brand”? Or perhaps they said “Barmanu”? Either way, this trip across Afghanistan and Pakistan in the footsteps of a departed Spanish cryptozoologist truly does involve boobies. Jake then defies expectation by NOT talking about ghuls/ghouls – and then 1000% meets expectation by trawling Reddit. Djinn, or jinn, are a nifty thing, turns out! And Geico commercials are annoying. Beware slumber parties at spooky houses you’ve dreamed about and watch out for ape junk as you settle into this Middle Eastern episode of Superduperstitious! 14 Aug 2020 | Episode 112 – Specific Islands | 01:00:41
August Around the World continues, this time in the bigger of the oceans! You know the one. Jake begins with cool rocks, just like you always hoped he would. Why? Because they’re what make up Nan Madol, a series of tiny, real nifty artificial islands in Micronesia built around a millennium ago! How exactly were they constructed, and why? IT’S A MYSTERY. And will white people ever give other cultures credit for their engineering chops? Not if this weather-controlling lost city has anything to say about it! Wyatt then takes one for the team (and fulfills a recent-ish promise) by finally giving an obligatory rundown on Rapa Nui. Also known as Easter Island, this bad boy’s got actually a lot of really cool and surprising history regarding its famous big ol’ heads. So stop thinking about yams and listen up! There’s plenty of world traveling still to come, so drop on by for this hour of Pacific island Superduperstitious fun! 20 Aug 2020 | Episode 113 – Not Your Granddaddy's Narwhal | 00:56:12
In this installment of August Around the World, things are getting every bit as spooky and mythology-y (?) as they are Latin American! An extra-interrupty Jake infects Wyatt’s mind with cetacean madness while the latter tries to tell the tale of a shape-shifting monstrosity known for terrorizing dark corners of northern Mexico since pre-Columbian times. Said to be what happens when black magic practitioners turn themselves into hellish pseudo-animals, these naguales sure do have a colorful horoscope. Then, in a segment so connected you’d think it was planned that way even though these hosts most definitely don’t have the wherewithal, Jake introduces the cadejo. If this Mesoamerican monster dog sounds familiar in a British kind of way (or indeed British in a familiar kind of way), then isn’t that something! Spooky tales AND cross-cultural folkloric common themes? What a podcast! Let’s just put a moratorium on all non-indigenous usage of the term “spirit animal” from here on out, shall we? Great. And while we’re at it, let’s gesture religiously into the air, protect the monkey, and check out this ep of Superduperstitious! 27 Aug 2020 | Episode 114 – Tralien Triad (feat. Derek Sword) | 01:10:35
August Around the World concludes with an excursion into Scandinavia, and this time, WE’VE GOT COMPANY. Specifically, that company is DEREK SWORD of the podcast Monster Crush! Jake, Derek, and Wyatt bring bullshit, history, and science, respectively, as they tackle all manner of Scandinavian spookums, including ghost kinks, un-animals, and surprise steamed hams. If you scatter some phantom rose petals and avert another nuclear doomsday, who knows? You might just find cryptozoological love faster than you can say Storsjöodjuret! 04 Sep 2020 | Episode 115 – O Captain My Captain | 00:48:48
It’s the Randonautica episode! Who CARES if the hosts aren’t in the same physical location as one another? Using the random coordinates suggested by the cryptic app, Wyatt and Jake tried their best to find stories tangentially related to what they found. All right, “best” is a strong word. But they certainly tried! Or, well… there are some stories, anyway? From the nosleep subreddit to famous cookie moguls, this episode runs the gamut of what qualifies as “audio content”. Spooky tales in the woods, a fair amount of honest to goodness history – there’s something for everyone! Or for someone, probably! You, the listeners, chose the topic this week. And so, you, the listeners, are also to blame for this episode. Enjoy! 19 Sep 2020 | Episode 116 – Please Recargh | 00:51:17
What do a scary forest hag legend and a weird stretch of Venezuelan road have in common? Nothing. Except that they’re both featured in this week’s potpourri episode! After some Venusian news, Jake introduces Wyatt to Penelope, a horrific monster woman who roams the Sierra Nevada eating everyone and everything she can. Can radioactive waste really turn a car crash victim into a superwitch? Why the hell not! Wyatt then takes a trip down memory lane to the late ’80s and early ’90s, but use caution as you follow, dear listener: this Caracas route, plagued by something called La Mancha Negra, is known for killing, just, EVERYBODY (on account of the blob). This ep’s got everything you could ever want in a podcast: cracker chewing sounds, meatstriders, asphalt – the total package. So why not drive off the road and straight into another episode of Superduperstitious!
