Superduperstitious (Wyatt Shell and Jake Withee)

It's another week, and the boys' fascination with the not-quite-human never ceases! First up, Wyatt describes the legend of a monster terrorizing Maryland, the sounds that a man-goat might make, and the angst inherent in being a human. He also expresses his deep passion for classic science fiction and fantasy.

Next, Jake gets back on his shit again, recounting even more encounters with gaunt, pale humanoids stalking the roads of the American northeast, including a child's drawing that REALLY doesn't help make these things less creepy. Phantoms abound in this fright-filled episode! After a correction to last week's story that makes it somehow even more upsetting to the boys, Jake discusses a bandage-covered spook that haunts a lonely Oregon road. Whether it's attacking cars while young couples are tryna smash, or crabwalking in and out of your kitchen at night, you're gonna have a bad time.

This week, Wyatt jumps on that opening-update-segment-train with some ghastly tales of Spring Heeled Jack's move to America, where he gets into some very specific routines. The legends are true! Specifically the ones about there being a new episode of Superduperstitious. After checking in again on the British Invasion (the Spring Heeled Jack one, that is), the boys examine some longstanding, almost elemental legends from different parts of the world.

First, Jake describes the mysterious Dark Watchers who lurk on ridges in Big Sur, being dark, and watching stuff. No clue what they are, but at this point, there's no ruling out even urRu as a possibility. Then Wyatt takes a plunge into the history and biology of a well known but never-not-awesome sea monster. This week, it's all about them artifact facts! The mysterious relics in question have some pretty far out stories behind them, and the boys are determined to dig in deep.

First up, Jake tells the tale of a crystal cranium thought to be sacred to the Mayans, or maybe not. Part of a supposed set of thirteen skulls scattered across the globe, could this polished piece of quartz be the key to immense cosmic power? What does 19th century Germany have to say on the matter?

Wyatt then details the curious Voynich manuscript, a dense and illustrated scientific textbook or possibly an early version of Playboy that, either way, has baffled linguists and cryptographers for ages. It's a health-conscious week as the boys embark on a superstition-fueled journey into New England's past. After an apropos Springheeled Jack update in Cape Cod, Wyatt retells the listener-suggested story of a vampirism scare during the 19th century. However, these vampires just make you cough and die. And are also already dead? And not real.

Jake then follows the specific account of a supposedly possessed teenager who was a perfect case study for why proper mental health treatment compels you far more than the power of Christ does. Somehow it took 28 episodes to finally get around to covering lake monsters, but here we are! And don't you worry: this one's got more logs and waves and misidentified loons than you can shake a moose at.

For us humans, it stands to reason that oodles of spooky stories focus on beings that are MOSTLY human, but not quite enough for comfort. It's certainly the case on this week's episode!

Wyatt first tries his hand at a Crawler update, and it's as creepy as should be expected for those pale, lanky bastards. Then in his main story, Wyatt covers encounters around the world with an entity whose heels might be described as decidedly... spring-like? Sleeping under the stars just got a whole lot scratchier.

The world sure does seem to have a lot of haunted places in it, huh? Like, at least several. And not all of them are even houses or abandoned prisons!

This week, the boys look at two such creepy locales. First, however, Jake dives into an extra-long and extra-horror-movie-ish update on the Phantom of the Chicago, which has made its way to Wisconsin in order to cockblock some college kids. Next, we visit the Lowlands of Scotland as Wyatt describes a creepy castle and its dark, ghoulish secret. It would be a rare day indeed that Superduperstitious would fail to pay lip service to some ancient reptilian friends. Luckily, one such creature made it even easier by paying a visit of its own, in this case to the town of Van Meter, Iowa. This week, it's an adventure into the woods for some ridiculous rigatoni! Jake leads Wyatt through the rambling yet flowery tale of "The Beast of the Land Between the Lakes and Specifically the Forest but in Kentucky", or whatever it's called. Never fear: a dozen or so coroners are here!

Superduperstitious is splashing into summer with some sea-inspired stories! Or at least, that was the plan.

Wyatt starts us off, covering a just kind of vaguely water-adjacent topic: a series of monsters in Australia that may all be one and the same, and not just in the "sticking them all together into one mess of an animal" way that some of the tales might suggest. Plus Jake invents the very worst cocktail and then conflates Irish and Scots Gaelic consonant pronunciations like some kind of IDIOT.

As consolation, he offers the account of the doomed S.S. It's gross bug week on Superduperstitious, because why the hell not? Both Jake and Wyatt independently and accidentally land on stories involving giant, creepy, wormlike creatures, and by some additional coincidence, these creatures also happen to both be found in the general vicinity of eastern Asia.

First up is Jake with a deadly worm in the Gobi Desert, which either murders the crap out of anyone or anything unlucky enough to encounter it, or it's a different thing that doesn't do those things, or it doesn't exist. At least it won't interfere with your spice mining. Wyatt then leads us out into the ocean to hunt for either a terrifying marine arthropod, or else some kind of cursed walrus. At any rate, keep the family jewels away from the seafloor and/or the bottom of your aquarium.

Wow, we really went all-in on gross, squirmy creatures this week, didn't we? Yes. Yes we did. Why? Because damn it, it's Superduperstitious!

But not before a long awaited update on those creepy bat monsters in the Chicago area — Jake walks us through Lon's overarching theory, and why that theory is so phantom-shit crazy as to ALMOST make these updates no fun anymore. ALMOST.

Wyatt shares a first look at some of the Fearsome Critters with the legend of the Gumberoo, which is, if possible, actually EVEN dumber than its name might suggest. Wyatt and Jake are also plagued by not one but TWO rounds of Shadowlands Roulette, and conclude the ep with a recap of their trip to the 3rd Annual International Cryptozoology Conference in Portland, ME (and a plea for $12,000).

October continues, and so do the guests! This week, author, historian, folklorist, tour guide, and all-around cool person ROXIE ZWICKER joins the show to recount hauntings around Portsmouth, NH. That, and a story about a cow that will change your life forever.

Who were these mysterious children who spoke a different language and had no idea how beans work? Aliens? Extradimensional beings? Malnourished immigrant children who were lost? Nah, that last one is too farfetched.

Any strange story is fair game this week, so the boys tackle some slightly more famous freak occurrences.

Jake kicks it off with some obligatory updates on the bat problems of the midwest, followed by a decidedly offbeat creature encounter from that same region in the 1970s. Meet the Enfield Horror, a creature of improbable anatomy and ill temper that terrorized a tiny Illinois town for a few weeks before vanishing forever, unless it’s still lurking there to this day (it’s not), because it was totally real the whole time (it wasn’t). You can shoot it, but it will just come back and loiter in your yard.

Wyatt then takes us to Siberia at the turn of the 20th century, where a massive explosion leveled enormous swathes of forest and baffled scientists for decades to come. Was it a meteor that exploded before landing? Did real scientists actually suggest that it was a miniature black hole magically appearing? And did they really publish that theory in the most respected journal in the world?

Keep an eye out for three-leggèd footprints, and don’t show any fear or surprise in Russia: it’s Superduperstitious time!

We all make mistakes. They don’t always involve depleting all breathable oxygen from a living space or disappearing forever into the jungle, but still. Accordingly, this ep is all about science mistakes!

After a buzzy update from Cuba/Wyatt, Jake tells the tale of the ambitious but ill fated Biosphere 2, an early ’90s experiment (read “publicity stunt”) that actually could have been really cool. Sadly, a lack of adequate technical consideration kept the habitat from realizing its full potential, and that’s how you get ants. And cockroaches. And almost suffocate everybody.

Wyatt then takes us back in time to the antics of Percy Fawcett, who simply couldn’t get enough of that tasty, tasty Amazon rain forest. So much so that he is STILL THERE TO THIS DAY. He may have brought back numerous reports of patently ridiculous animals, and vanished while searching for the so called Lost City of Z, but at least he wasn’t secretly doing something WEIRD, like attempting to help humankind ascend to a higher plane by initiating with transdimensional beings… right? Also, Jake and Wyatt discuss the key differences between poison and venom, and their plans for an upcoming stage play production.

After a noisy revisit to what was once believed to be bugs, Jake mounts an expedition to the Cairngorms, the favored haunt of An Fear Liath Mòr, The Big Grey Man. There are many opinions on what this frightening figure lurking atop Ben Macdui might be, but one thing’s for sure: finding out will involve a lot of embarrassing impersonations.

A brand new recurring segment follows, in which Wyatt and Jake find a new use for the NCAAA, the arcane computer they built/summoned back in Episode 60. After that, Wyatt takes us to the Outer Hebrides (pronounced HEE-bryedz) to investigate the mysterious disappearance of the lighthouse keepers of Eilean Mòr. Hear the century-old tale of how, if you go outside without a coat, you’ll catch a cold so bad that three guys die.

August Around the World continues, this time in Africa!

After a bit of clarification RE: the Fire Killer (namely the fact that Wyatt and Jake are not him), Wyatt takes off into the forests of the Congo River basin in search of an elusive ape. And this time, it’s not even an upright one! This is the story of how sometimes the legends really ARE true. And at the end of the journey, you find a creature that poops just SO big.

Jake heads in a different direction, with some botanical buffoonery, namely the so-called Madagascar Devil Tree. Is anyone really surprised that a bunch of white people would totally eat up a story about a tree that totally eats up people? The tale itself may be absurd, but you won’t leave empty-handed! Jake also provides some half-assed science about the world’s REAL carnivorous plants, and then fails to remember the verb “to taper”.

Wyatt and Jake are determined to stick to their month-long prompt of finding stories from all around the world, even if they’re terrible at it. This week, it’s India!

Following a quick PANDER session for patrons, Jake continues to use Reddit as a crutch as he just kinda dumps out a series of random stories vaguely connected to the country in question. Haunted objects? Haunted houses? Very tall women? This segment’s got ‘em all, plus a horrible humanoid creature sighting for extra good measure.

It’s then time to face the dreaded wheels in a long overdue round of Shadowlands Roulette, but that doesn’t deter Wyatt from proceeding onward to tell the story of some bugs and some music. Turns out, when there are more people around to spread rumors, those rumors spread very effectively. But, like, nobody ENJOYS getting randomly scratched in the face at night, so, you know.

August Around the World won’t stop until August does! YOUR MOVE, AUGUST.

This installment finds the boys in Canada! But not literally. (Although, depending on how close to the release date you happen to catch this episode, Wyatt actually MIGHT be actively in Ontario, so there you go.) ANYWAY, guess what’s back? The Phantom of the Chicago! And guess what it probably still is? Birds!

Once the regional fun begins in earnest, Wyatt kicks things off all the way up in Nunavut, with a Baffin Island Inuit creation tale involving familiar lycanthropic imagery. Try to ignore the implications of a human-canine marriage long enough to follow the trail south to Quebec, where Europeans bring… tales of the very same creatures? Remember: the first rule of being a loup-garou is you do NOT talk about being a loup-garou.

Jake then heads west all the way to the Pacific, with a Vancouver ghost story that’ll scare the blankets right off of you. If you’re house sitting all alone and start to get creeped out, you’d be wise to leave the lights on — but that may not be enough. Redditors really know how to deliver, don’t they?

Keep your tuque on tight so your ears don’t get sickle sliced, and stay away from your aunt’s swimming pool — it’s all aboot the Great White North on this episode of Superduperstitious. So don’t miss it, ya hoser!

All good things must come to an end, and also so does August Around the World. For the last leg of this particular journey, it’s time to head to Australia!

To be fair, this is hardly the show’s first visit to this particular continent (or even its third), but this IS the first trip to Australia that is exclusively about ghost stories! Jake leads off with another Reddit find, because he truly is the worst at finding ghost story sources. Listen to the actually fairly heartwarming tale of a little girl and her perhaps not-so-imaginary friend, and find out whether ghosts die when hit by trucks.

The Boiz are back, just as you’ve always known them and going by that one name you’ve always called them!

Thanks to a listener suggestion, this week is one full of not-quite-vampires, and their amazing similarities across cultures! After a positively thrilling update from the show’s official Field Correspondent, Jake starts with the Aswang, one of several billion terrifying mythological creatures to come out of the Philippines. Although both Jake and Wyatt learn that they had totally the wrong idea about what the Aswang is, they are able to at least continue to be creeped out by that damned tongue. So I guess fetuses are safe for now?

Wyatt then turns to Romania, not for your standard Transylvanian fare, but instead for some background on the strigoi, a pre-vampire with far more complicated rules and apparently much more involved methods of disposal. And thankfully, there is hope that these undead creeps may become functioning members of society again (at least once they stop stealing cattle).

Keep away from any lickholes in your domicile and be prepared to pry open your dead loved ones with a pitchfork while you tune in to another fun episode of Superduperstitious!

It’s adventure time once again on Superduperstitious, but that doesn’t mean that those adventures have to have any firm grounding in REALITY.

After a quick UK check-in with some genuine archaeological coolness, Wyatt heads to Arizona's Superstition Mountains to examine the Legend of the Lost Dutchman. Sure, all evidence of this particular goldmine is 1000% apocryphal, but why would that stop multiple real people from dying actual deaths in their attempts to find it? This is GOLD we’re talking about!

Jake then takes things unintentionally nearby to the Grand Canyon, where, it turns out, all ancient civilizations came from. You want Egyptian mummies? You got ‘em! A generic mishmash of a dozen or more distinct eastern and southern Asian cultures? Coming right up! A whole bunch of scientists in 1909 studying these incredible finds while avoiding a haunted snake pit? Check. It’s all for sure a real thing that happened, and that’s why we all remember it so well!

Today’s episode is all about giving due diligence to some big names in fringe medical “science” whose dangerous misinformation has caused lasting harm. Meet Andrew Wakefield, the British former doctor who is the sole reason anyone has ever believed in a link between vaccines and autism. How did he reach that conclusion? By lying. For money. Joining him is Judy Mikovits, retrovirus enthusiast who decided to yes-and Wakefield’s work by linking vaccines not only with autism, but with CFS and just about every imaginable cancer, too. Her secret? Also lying.

In this installment of August Around the World, things are getting every bit as spooky and mythology-y (?) as they are Latin American!

An extra-interrupty Jake infects Wyatt’s mind with cetacean madness while the latter tries to tell the tale of a shape-shifting monstrosity known for terrorizing dark corners of northern Mexico since pre-Columbian times. Said to be what happens when black magic practitioners turn themselves into hellish pseudo-animals, these naguales sure do have a colorful horoscope.

Then, in a segment so connected you’d think it was planned that way even though these hosts most definitely don’t have the wherewithal, Jake introduces the cadejo. If this Mesoamerican monster dog sounds familiar in a British kind of way (or indeed British in a familiar kind of way), then isn’t that something! Spooky tales AND cross-cultural folkloric common themes? What a podcast!
