06 Feb 2017 | 50 - LIVE: MEMORIAL DAY 2000 w Cory Sklar, Emily Van Dyke, Melissa McQueen, and Frankie G | 00:48:05
Episode 50 Live at San Francisco Sketchfest 2017. For our live show we screened the cult classic "found footage" home movie Memorial Day 2000. Just a good clean video of Northern Michigan folks (Mike, Amy, Tom, and Kiersten) on vacation in a trailer setting things on fire, singing the Star-Spangled Banner, riding ATVs, throwing up, and having epic mudfights. Supposedly found as a VHS at a garage sale, Carly Ptak and Twig Harper (Nautical Almanac) sold the edited version through their website/noise label Heresee. It was discontinued at the request of the participants, but the legend lives on 16 years later. We talk about our own youthful indiscretions, Juggalos, Springer, Faygo, Warped Tour, sloppy joe tacos, Northern Cities Vowel Shift, what constitutes a documentary, camping fails, and much more. We even get to hear Paco play piano. Our esteemed panel included musician and radio host (Illogical Contraption) Cory Sklar (aka Chaki), comedians Melissa McQueen (Dorks Of Yore, Punching Henry), Frankie G (Killing My Lobster), and Emily Van Dyke. Recorded Sunday January 29th at Pianofight. Watch Memorial Day 2000 Thanks to our Patreon supporters Angi Brzycki, Jaan Shenberger, Janet Flemer, and Jaime Borschuk. 07 Jan 2019 | 105 - Director William Badgley (HERE TO BE HEARD: THE STORY OF THE SLITS, KILL ALL REDNECK PRICKS) | 01:36:03
William Badgley has made two music documentaries - Kill All Redneck Pricks: A Documentary Film about a Band Called KARP and Here To Be Heard: The Story of the Slits. Both bands were hugely influential, in vastly different ways for different generations. KARP has a small but mighty cult following, especially for the ‘90s Pacific Northwest, the scene that Badgley grew up in. The Slits were a wild band of young women in the first wave of UK punk. ‘ they broke up in the early 80s, then reformed with 2 principal members in the oughts and kept touring until the death of singer Ari Up in 2010 Badgley is wrapping up his documentary about Don Letts, the crucial link between London’s punk and reggae subcultures who is an archivist and filmmaker in his own right (and former manager of The Slits). I was able to catch an in-progress cut of the Letts film, Rebel Dread, at the Echo Park Film Center - so there’s some talk about that version which will be pretty different by the time of an official release. 05 Jul 2021 | 176 - THIS IS POP: AUTO-TUNE w Eric Schwartz | 00:58:59
We are talking about This Is Pop, the music documentary series currently streaming on Netflix. This is Pop uncover’s the real stories behind your favorite pop songs and charts the impact of the festival scene, Auto-Tune, boy bands and more. Our guest is Eric Scwartz who is almost featured prominently — in Episode 2 — simply named Auto-Tune. In this episode the producers examine how Auto-Tune is embraced and mocked, and shifts the pitch of the pop charts and changed the game for artists such as Cher, T-Pain and Kanye West. One of the most creative and original comedians working today, Eric has earned the description, “everything there is to love about entertainment” (First Order Historians). GQ India names him one of “5 International Comics You Must Catch.” E! News Daily host Ryan Seacrest said Schwartz is “rocking the web” with “video that’s got everyone Googling” and Forbes.com applauds him for having “a minor industry in pop music parodies.” A product of America’s melting pot, Eric was raised on the outskirts of Los Angeles in a Jewish and Mexican family during the golden age of hip hop. His entertainment career began when he spent his Bar Mitzvah money on DJ gear and began entertaining at parties and school dances, and eventually became one of the most popular DJs at entertainment-industry events. Not content to only speak with his hands, Eric never hesitated at an opportunity to get on the mic and make the audience laugh. These would be the seeds to grow Eric’s style of musical comedy, leading him to television appearances on Showtime, The Tonight Show, Comics Unleashed, BET and his one-hour special, “Surrender to the Blender,” on Hulu. A pioneer of viral video, Eric has racked up over 100 million views on his stand-up clips, music videos and sketches. He has created content for and with with Grammy-winner Jason Mraz, Jo Koy, Tiffany Haddish, Craig Robinson, Anjelah Johnson, Disney, Yahoo, and more. Eric is heard regularly as host and creator of Podcast: The Musical, where he conducts an interview and creates songs based on the conversation. He headlines across the country, in addition to opening for Jo Koy on his Just Kidding World Tour. 17 Apr 2017 | 55 - CRUMB w Wayne Federman | 00:59:11
Paco and George are thrilled to have the comedy legend Wayne Federman over to talk about his favorite documentary CRUMB. Crumb is Terry Zwigoff's (Ghost World) first documentary about godfather of underground comics Robert Crumb. This 1994 doc soon expands its scope to the Crumb Brothers (Maxon and Charles) and ends up going many unexpected directions. Zwigoff and Crumb played in the Cheap Suit Serenaders. Wayne Federman is an American comedian, actor, author, comedy writer, and musician. He is noted for numerous stand-up comedy appearances in clubs, theaters, and on television; a biography of "Pistol" Pete Maravich; and supporting comedic acting roles in The X-Files, The Larry Sanders Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Community, Legally Blonde, 50 First Dates, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Step Brothers. He was the head monologue writer for NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in its first season. Crumb is about the experiences and characters of Robert Crumb and his family, particularly his brothers, as well as Robert’s wife Aline Kominsky-Crumb and his children. Jeffery M. Anderson (later critic for the San Francisco Examiner) called Crumb “the greatest documentary ever made.” The movie chronicles Crumb’s career, highlighting his creations “Keep On Truckin’” and Fritz the Cat, and his pioneering role in the genesis of underground comix. Interviews with his family members and ex-girlfriends (such as Kathy Goodell), and commentary from critics like Robert Hughes and Trina Robbins, as well as selections from Crumb’s vast artist output, shed light on Crumb’s psychology and darkly cynical perspective on life. Closing song - "True Blue Lou" performed by R. Crumb And His Cheap Suit Serenaders. Bonus Patreon talk with Wayne - https://www.patreon.com/posts/8931644 - we talk about Reagan, John Carpenter, soda tasting, Kurt Russell, Tickled, physical media, and much more! 24 Jun 2019 | 119 - ROLLING THUNDER REVUE w Tony Camin | 01:05:49
Paco can't quite get into Bob Dylan although our guest has tried to turn him on to the canon. Comedian Tony Camin joins the Sup Doc gang to provide a Dylan fan's insight into the obtuse Netflix concoction Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese (2019). Netflix describes it as “part concert film, part fever dream” and an “alchemic mix of fact and fantasy.” “Rolling Thunder Revue” is an engaging but disorganized and long-winded account of the time in 1975 that Bob Dylan convened a vagabond caravan of musicians, poets, reporters, photographers, money men, and hangers-on to tour the United States in the lead-up to the country’s Bicentennial celebration. The tour was a bust financially and in terms of cultural impact. Nevertheless, the Rolling Thunder Revue rejuvenated Dylan as a musician, in the manner of Elvis Presley’s 1968 “comeback” special. And it generated enormous amounts of tour footage, some of which is reproduced here, within a highly conceptual framework, by Scorsese. Our guest Tony Camin has appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Real Time with Bill Maher, and lots of others that have been cancelled. He’s has performed at The Just For Laughs festival in Montreal as well as The HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, as well as the Melbourne Comedy festival in Australia. Tony has written for programs on NBC, VH1, and Comedy Central. In addition to being co-creator/ performer of “The Marijuana-Logues”, he can also be seen as a correspondent for “The Media Project”, on IFC, and was a recent contestant on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. 20 Jan 2020 | 134 - DON'T FUCK WITH CATS w Tara Jepsen | 01:19:03
On Ep 134 Hosts Paco Romane and George Chen recapped the twisty and terrifying Netflix documentary Don’t F**K With Cats (like we don't know what "F**k" means) with the hilarious and insightful Tara Jepsen. We had no idea that there was such a thing as “Rule Zero” of the Internet. It makes sense, especially because cute cat videos have been the best thing the Internet has brought us. The rule says, “Don’t fuck with cats, or we’ll find you.” TRIGGERS - a guideline to triggering animal abuse scene timecodes (in episode one) were kindly shared with us by @hilldawg If you've never heard of Luka Magnotta, consider yourself lucky. Someone is anonymously torturing and killing kittens and posting videos online. A home-schooled Canadian sociopath creates a bunch of sock puppet accounts about how cool he is with poorly photoshopped images and plants rumors about dating a serial killer. The heroes of the piece are facebook sleuths who crowdsource clues, tearing apart aspects of the video to try and locate and identify the perpetrator. Along the way, the hunters become the hunted, online vanity and murderous impulses clash, and we have to ask whether these tragic events could have been averted. Tara Jepsen is a writer and comic living in Los Angeles. Her novel "Like a Dog" was published by City Lights in 2017. She has made many short films with collaborator Beth Lisick, and they have a new one coming out this year. She and illustrator Miriam Klein-Stahl founded Pave the Way Skateboards, which seeks to elevate queer visibility in skateboarding and whose boards are collected by the Smithsonian. *Cvlt Nation on Peruvian post-punk Follow Tara Jepsen on: Twitter: @captaindingbat Instagram: @captaindingbat Follow Sup Doc on: Twitter: @supdocpodcast Instagram: @supdocpodcast Facebook: @supdocpodcast And you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon. 23 Oct 2017 | 72 - HIP-HOP EVOLUTION w Ed Balloon | 01:24:30
ROCKTOBER continues! George Chen sat down with musician Ed Balloon to discuss the documentary series Hip-Hop Evolution (2016). They discuss Russell Simmons' socks, living in Nigeria, The Get Down, Wild Style, Boston's music scene, and much more. Ed's latest EP Flourish just came out on Deathbomb Arc. While Ed Balloon has never shied away from soul bearing with his streamlined and catchy music, with each new release he brings more socially-focused content to the minimal sound his fans already love. In a unique space between club tracks, love songs, and pop anthems, Ed is able to find the core of a sound, shed the rest, and produce such a focused sound that it is at once huge and cosmic and also as intimate as a cuddle. It is the perfect musical forum for contemplating the ways our world’s huge issues fall right in our laps. Ed Balloon is the best friend we all wish we had; able to tell us those hard truths in a way that is a pure act of love. Hip-Hop Evolution features in-depth, personal interviews with the progenitors of DJing, rapping, and production, culminating in what is now taken to be Hip hop music and rap, adding to the existing understanding of hip-hip's earliest decades. Such original artists, producers, DJs, and promoters include DJ Kool Herc, Coke La Rock, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Fab Five Freddy, Marley Marl, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Moe Dee, Kurtis Blow, Doug E. Jim talks about how his friendship with Pat and the band lead to this film, handling the delicate subject matter, and his background in filmmaking. There are many twists and turns to be revealed, and we follow up on Monday June 5th with the documentary's subject, Pat Spurgeon. *Pat and Jim will also be at a screening Monday June 5th (the same day part 2 drops) at the Alamo Drafthouse Mission Theater in SF, followed by a Q&A and a live performance from Rogue Wave. 05 Oct 2017 | Bonus Interview: THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON editor Tyler Hubby | 00:15:48
George talked to Tyler Hubby about the work he did with Jeff Feuerzeig on The Devil and Daniel Johnston, which coincides with our Episode 69 with Kip Uhlhorn and Daniel's current tour (where his backing band changes from city to city and includes Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Doug Martsch of Built To Spill). Listen to this in addition to Episode 69 for some rounded out information. Since we recorded these interviews, The New York Times also reported on the recent death of Johnston's father Bill. 01 May 2017 | 56 - INTERVIEW WITH A SERIAL KILLER w Allison Mick | 01:02:16
For our 2 year anniversary, we'll be covering true crime documentaries all throughout May for our MAYHEM series. Trigger Warning! Extremely graphic violence described. Paco and George delve into Interview With A Serial Killer with our guest comedian Allison Mick. Allison Mick is an Oakland-based comedian and writer originally from Rochester, NY. She draws from her upbringing and personal experiences to address topics like race, gender, and serial killers. She’s performed at SF Sketchfest, the Boston Women in Comedy Festival, and the Hudson Valley Comedy Festival. Interview With A Serial Killer is a British 2006 production featuring Christopher Martin’s prison interview with “The Genesee River Killer” Arthur Shawcross. Found guilty of killing two children and 11 prostitutes, Shawcross’ tales of cannibalism and mutilation have made him one of America’s most notorious serial killers. That he killed 13 people by asphyxiation is certain. But exactly what he did to his victims and why is not at all clear. His story has changed many, many times over the years. Margaret Deming discovered that Shawcross was her father in 2000, but she has embraced their relationship and even allows him to play grandfather to her seven kids. Interview with a Serial Killer interviews Shawcross as well as Margaret in an effort to find out the truth. There's also LaCroix tasting, blinkiness, working for prosecutor Charles Siragusa, JonBenét Ramsey theories, LA's Museum Of Death, and Burzum. http://www.acakebakesinbrooklyn.com/2012/07/when-murder-and-pastry-collide.html http://www.nydailynews.com/news/justice-story/serial-killer-jailhouse-artist-article-1.1762308 Follow us on: Twitter: @supdocpodcast Instagram: @supdocpodcast Facebook: @supdocpodcast And you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon. 02 Oct 2017 | 69 - THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON w Kip Uhlhorn (Cloudland Canyon) | 01:23:41
Sup Doc kicks off the jams w ROCKTOBER a month long line-up of music docs and great guests. We hit the stage with The Devil and Daniel Johnston with our guest, musician Kip Uhlhorn! The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a 2005 documentary film about the noted American musician Daniel Johnston. It chronicles Johnston's life from childhood up to the present, with an emphasis on his experiences with bipolar disorder, and how it manifested itself in demonic self-obsession. The film was directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, edited by Tyler Hubby, and produced by Henry S. Rosenthal. Kip Uhlhorn formed Cloudland Canyon in 2002. The first Cloudland Canyon release, Requiems Der Natur, 2002-2004 was released by Tee Pee in 2006. Cloudland Canyon quickly set about releasing a number of other releases and touring that same year, most notably a single track collaboration 12”/LP entitled Exterminating Angel with Chicago musician Lichens in 2007 on Holy Mountain. In 2007, the band was signed to Kranky and released their first proper album Silver Tongued Sisyphus. In 2008, the band released another collaborative 12” with Mythical Beast on Not Not Fun, as well as their second full length, Lie in Light on Kranky. The latter was chosen as one of top 25 albums of the year 2008 by the Magnet magazine. Cloudland Canyon subsequently moved to Holy Mountain, where the band began their own imprint of Holy Mountain (Intercoastal Artists) for 2010’s album Fin Eaves, which has become their best-received work to date, landing on numerous year-end lists. They went on tour with the Flaming Lips (whom Uhlhorn has collaborated extensively with) as well as with Interpol and Bear in Heaven. Members of the Arcade Fire even name checked the band. Uhlhorn has also played in several other successful groups and bands during this time, including King Khan & the Shrines, Panthers (Dim Mak, Vice), Pharaohs (100% Silk, Stone's Throw, Intercoastal Artists), Eden Express (Holy Mountain), and Tav Falco's Panther Burns He has also played guitar live and on albums by Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, including Chatham's Crimson Grail, which was staged at Lincoln Center. Cloudland Canyon’s ranks have included close friend Jerry Fuchs (also drummer for !!!, LCD Soundsystem, Maserati, Turing Machine, Moby) who died in 2009. Most recently, memphis drummer Ross Johnson (Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Alex Chilton) has joined the band. 29 Jun 2020 | 148 - GRIZZLY MAN | 00:41:30
Paco and George look back at one of our favorite docs, Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man (2005). Pieced together from Timothy Treadwell's own video footage, this is a remarkable examination of the calling that drove Treadwell to live among a pack of wild grizzly bears in Alaska. A devoted conservationist with a passion for adventure, Treadwell believed he had bridged the gap between human and beast. When one of the bears he loved tragically turns on him, the footage he shot serves as a window into our understanding of nature. Narrated and directed as only Werner Herzog can, Grizzly Man is a perfect blend of funny, personal, and harrowing. With a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Grizzly Man is a classic documentary about devotion, nature, and its grim realities. Along the way we ponder "Chekhov’s Bear", if Hollywood auditions are worse than living in The Maze, Alaskan Tinder settings, Tiger Kings vs. Grizzly men, and the dope-ass Richard Thompson soundtrack. 11 Jan 2016 | 21 - MY DEPRESSION w Hana Michels | 01:17:43
On Episode 21 of Sup Doc, George talks with comedian Hana Michels about My Depression: The Up And Down and Up Of It by Elizabeth Swados, Robert Marienetti, and David Wachtenheim (2014). Does an animated memoir even count as a documentary? HBO thought so, but we have questions. Hana and George talk about depression, having two therapists as parents, medication, comedy, and generational shifts in humor. Famed Broadway writer, director and composer Elizabeth Swados has struggled with depression her whole life. She shares her experiences with this often-misunderstood condition to make a difficult and sometimes taboo topic more accessible and understandable. Based on Swados’ graphic memoir “My Depression: A Picture Book,” and featuring the voices of Sigourney Weaver (as Swados), Steve Buscemi, Fred Armisen and Dan Fogler. Hana Michels grew up on the west side of Los Angeles, the daughter of two Jewish psychologists, she pursued a career in comedy in hopes of utilizing her unique ability to judge herself at a professional level. While attending Syracuse University she began performing stand up and writing, and has since performed at such venues as New York Comedy Club, the Los Angeles Comedy Store, and the Westside theater as a regular performer and a sketch performer in the Punk Haus Players. Hana's writing for sites such as Vice, Reductress, and Thebadguyswin has ranged from silly and satirical to personal and biting. 12 Apr 2021 | 170 - OPERATION VARSITY BLUES w Aviva Siegel | 01:02:32
George and Aviva dig into the infamous 2019 college admissions scandal, where over 50 people faced criminal charges for racketeering and conspiracy. Mastermind Rick Singer funneled money from wealthy families to bribe coaches and admissions officers at major universities throughout the US, including actors Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin. OPERATION VARSITY BLUES is the first doc to tackle the story head on, made by one of our favorite directors, Chris Smith, for Netflix. It features reenactments of phone calls in a very narrative fashion, even casting name actors like Matthew Modine. Our guest to discuss this film is comedian and writer Aviva Siegel. Aviva's comedy has been featured in SF Sketchfest, The All Jane Comedy Festival, The Asheville Comedy Festival, and Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. She has also written for The Hard Times and Reductress, and hosts the zoom comedy show Talkies. She also just launched her podcast about advertising, Ad Wizards. Paco and George meet up with Jordan Brady, who was a stand up comedian before turning into a feature/documentary/commercial director. His trilogy of "I Am Comic" comedian documentaries shows what it takes to perform and live as a comic. Jordan Brady was a stand-up comedian touring nightclubs across America. A self-taught filmmaker, he directed four narrative feature films, three full documentaries and over 1200 commercials, as well as Maria Bamford’s acclaimed Netflix Special. In 2016, Jordan completed his passion project; a feature documentary trilogy on what it takes to be a stand-up comedian. “I AM COMIC” stars Sarah Silverman, Leslie Jones and more. 2014’s aptly titled “I AM ROAD COMIC” stars Wayne Federman and Marc Maron. The most personal film of his career is “I AM BATTLE COMIC”. 04 Jan 2021 | 163 - RODENTS OF UNUSUAL SIZE directors Chris Metzler, Jeff Springer, Quinn Costello | 01:21:30
George covers a lot of ground with Chris Metzler, Quinn Costello, and Jeff Springer; co-directors of Rodents of Unusual Size. Documentary about the nutria overtaking and destroying Louisiana's swamp land. I also ask Chris and Jeff about their earlier collaborations, Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone and Plagues & Pleasures On the Salton Sea, and their work as Tilapia Film. We learn about nutria itch and the right lighting for country music videos, among other things. Hard headed Louisiana fisherman Thomas Gonzales doesn't know what will hit him next. After decades of hurricanes and oil spills he faces a new threat - hordes of monstrous 20 pound swamp rats. Known as “nutria”, these invasive South American rodents breed faster than the roving squads of hunters can control them. And with their orange teeth and voracious appetite they are eating up the coastal wetlands that protects Thomas and his town of Delacroix Island from hurricanes. But the people who have lived here for generations are not the type of folks who will give up without a fight. Thomas and a pack of lively bounty hunters are hellbent on saving Louisiana before it dissolves beneath their feet. It is man vs. rodent. May the best mammal win. The store closed in 2016 and this documentary captures the last month and a half of the store’s activity, with former employees, fans, and musicians all showing up to pay their respects. There are interviews and guest appearances from Martin Gore of Depeche Mode, Jason Schwartzmann, Regina Spektor, William Basinski, Tunde Adebimpe, Cornelius, and Benicio Del Toro. A "Virtual Cinema release" through Factory25, part of the profitsare being channeled to record stores, book stores, movie theaters, and other retailers shuttered due the the pandemic. We compare everything to The Simpsons because that's just what Julia does! Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where it won the US Documentary Prize for Best Editing. Directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg follow 75-year-old Joan Rivers for a year of work, what Joan knows and does the best. 31 Aug 2020 | 154 - ROBIN'S WISH director Tylor Norwood | 00:57:19
Paco and George are pleased to have on today’s guest Tylor Norwood the director of Robin’s Wish. This documentary centers around the final years of Robin Williams and the confusion around why this comedy icon killed himself in 2014. After his death, the media narrative skewed the facts surrounding why Williams died. It wasn’t until a coroner’s report that the complexity of his situation was better understood: he had a severe case of Lewy Body Syndrome. Williams’ widow, Susan Schneider Williams, has become a championing voice for the little-known form of dementia with Lewy Bodies. Showing the frailty of a suffering genius in his last months, Robins Wish is the first time the public is seeing this side of Williams’ life. This story is lovingly crafted by director Tylor Norwood, who has been a guest on Sup Doc for his previous documentary, The United States of Detroit. Tylor was approached by Susan to tell this story, and his team tracked down friends and neighbors while laying out the details of a fairly obscure disease that is very difficult to diagnose. Robin’s Wish comes out on Video on Demand (VOD) everywhere on September 1st. 30 Sep 2019 | 126 - WESTSIDE VS THE WORLD w Jesse Hett | 01:03:13
On episode 126 Paco is joined by comedian Jesse Hett to recap the 2019 Netflix documentary Westside vs The World. This documentary tells the history of the Westside Barbell Powerlifting Club and its founder Louie Simmons. The doc is narrated by Ron Perlman and focuses on Louie’s youth, his discovery of the Culver City Westside Barbell club, his journey into powerlifting and his accomplishments. Plus a lot of powerlifting drama. If you follow the sport you’ll be sure to recognize many of the club’s famous names and accomplishments. The doc follows Westside from its origins to its its domination through the 90s and early 2000s and to relative obscurity in the era of raw powerlifting. Our guest is comedian Jesse Hett. Jesse is a stand-up comedian based in Oakland, California. He has appeared on the front page of the Wall Street Journal doing comedy while wearing a virtual reality helmet. That sounds made up but it's true, you can look it up. He has performed in SF Sketchfest and the Savage Henry Comedy Festival; Rooster T. Feathers, the San Jose Improv, and the San Francisco and Sacramento Punch Lines. His style has been described as "observational absurdism" and one newspaper reviewer wrote that he "says very smart things in a very dumb way" which is kind of mean but print media is dying so Jesse Hett will have the last laugh. George brings his recording gear on vacation to the Twin Cities this muggy summer and meets up with comedians Rana May and Shelly Paul to discuss the Second Life documentary Life 2.0, streaming on Netflix. We have a lot of opinions while recapping the three main storylines of this 2010 technophobia doc from director Jason Spingarn-Koff (Oscar winner for Icarus). 27 Apr 2020 | 141 - KID ICARUS director Mike Ott | 00:33:12
What were you doing in 2007? Mike Ott was starting his first teaching job as a film professor at a community college in Southern California. There he meets a bafflingly confident 18 year old Leigh Harkrider, who thinks his student film, “Enslavence” is going to send him to stardom. What feels like a fictional sitcom is filled with unforgettable characters and youthful hubris, but there is some redemption for Leigh. Kid Icarus is like a spiritual sequel to American Movie for the MySpace generation. You can watch it on Amazon Prime and Kanopy. Mike Ott studied under Thom Andersen at Cal Arts where he received his MFA degree in Film/Video. His latest film, California Dreams (2017), premiered at Berlin Critics Week and in the US at SXSW. 06 Jul 2020 | 149 - ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL | 00:47:19
Paco and George recap the 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil directed by Sacha Gervasi, who was a teenage Anvil fan and roadie in the '80s. This doc is tragic brilliant and hilarious and is as close to the real life Spinal Tap as possible (and even involves a player named Robb Reiner). Canadian heavy-metal band Anvil delivered an influential 1982 album that inspired the likes of Anthrax and Metallica. Then they dropped off the map and spent decades of toiling in obscurity. The doc centers around guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner as they stumble through a European tour and reflect on failure, friendship, resilience, and following an impossible dream. It's like the opposite of Some Kind of Monster? Along the way we find out this movie's connection to the Spice Girls, what to watch out for when touring the Czech Republic, telemarketing, and life after this doc. Anvil: The Story of Anvil has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and should be on everyone’s Best Of documentary list. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime. -Pitch A Doc : Patrisse Cullors and Fatty Arbuckle - Funk Turkey's AI-generated Nirvana song Follow us on: Twitter: @supdocpodcast Instagram: @supdocpodcast Facebook: @supdocpodcast And you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon. 14 Aug 2017 | NEXT WEEK: 8/21 FATHERLESS with comedian and actor Baron Vaughn | 00:01:12
Next Week August 21st on Sup Doc: Paco & George talk to comedian/actor Baron Vaughn (Grace and Frankie, Mystery Science Theater 3000, New Negroes) about his documentary Fatherless (2017, Dawn Porter). Baron is entering his 30s, in a serious relationship, and has lingering questions about the father he never knew. Raised by a single mother in New Mexico, the successful entertainer had to cobble together his ideas about masculinity from all sorts of non-traditional relationships, and ponders the statistical baggage attached to being African-American and fatherless. The viewer accompanies the highs and lows as Vaughn and his film crew set out on the search for his biological father. Available through Amazon Prime and Fusion TV. 15 Oct 2018 | 99 - EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP w Eric Steuer | 01:09:28
George spoke with Eric Steuer about one of his favorite docs, EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP (2010) The only film credited to Banksy, Exit Through The Gift Shop tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a self-taught street artist/documentarian who ends up becoming the subject of the film. It has to be seen to be believed, and even then there’s a lot that is unbelievable, as befits a prankster like Banksy. Is Thierry aka Mr. Brainwash real or a long con? We get into the theories and the comedy of the art world. Eric Steuer works with artists, media companies, technology developers, and cultural institutions on the use of Creative Commons licenses and CC-licensed content. Before joining CC, Eric was an editor for Wired magazine, where he is currently a correspondent, covering the intersection of technology and popular culture. As a musician he’s released a bunch of recordings and remixes, the most recent being the Dos Feeliz “Most Realest” EP(Plug Research) and Not The 1s “Your Man Is Garbage” single. 13 May 2019 | 115 - MOMMY DEAD AND DEAREST w Ally Johnson | 01:12:14
Our Mayhem True Crime series continues with the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest directed by Erin Lee Carr. In July 2016, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the brutal stabbing death of her mother, Dee Dee. Gypsy, then 24, was arguably the biggest victim of all, held hostage by her mother since she was a young child – a casualty of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Gypsy’s plan to kill Dee Dee was a last-ditch attempt to flee this abuse and her partner-in-crime is doing life. Not only is there this documentary but America is abuzz about the hit Hulu series based on this case, The Act starring Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee and Joey King as Gypsy. Ally Johnson is a radio host, voice actor and comedy writer based in Los Angeles. She spent four years co-hosting top-rated morning show Kevin Klein Live in San Francisco, giving the station their highest ratings in over a decade. She has guest hosted for Loveline, KFI News, NASCAR XFinity Series, and hosted a podcast on Playboy Radio called The Real Ally Show. She currently hosts Drop The Subject on Channel Q, the world’s first nationally syndicated LGBTQ radio station. Ally also works regularly in the voiceover industry, working with Pixar, Telltale Games, Ubisoft and Disney Character Voices just to name a few. Paco and George sit down with comedian/artist Kristina Wong to discuss LO AND BEHOLD, REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD (2016). Along the way we learn about Kristina's practice, rapping in Uganda, trolling Trump on twitter, and our relationship to technology. Oscar®-nominated documentarian Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Cave of Forgotten Dreams) chronicles the virtual world from its origins to its outermost reaches, exploring the digital landscape with the same curiosity and imagination he previously trained on earthly destinations. Herzog leads viewers on a journey through a series of provocative conversations that reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works - from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships. Kristina Wong was recently featured in the New York Times’ Off Color series. She is a performance artist, comedian and writer who has created five solo shows and one ensemble play that have toured across North America and the UK. Her most notable touring show– “Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” looked at the high rates of depression and suicide among Asian American women and toured dozens of venues across the United States since 2006. She’s been a commentator for American Public Media’s Marketplace, PBS, Jezebel, xoJane, Playgirl Magazine, Huffington Post and a guest on Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, Al Jazeera’s “The Stream,” and AM Tonight on Fusion TV. She’s been awarded residencies from the MacDowell Colony, New York Theater Workshop, Ojai Playwrights Festival, Montalvo Center for the Arts, Hermitage, and Atlantic Center for the Arts. On television, she’s been on General Hospital, Nickelodeon’s “Nicky Ricky Dicky and Dawn,” and Myx TV’s “I’m Asian American and Want Reparations for Yellow Fever.” Her newest solo show “The Wong Street Journal” navigates White Privilege as an Asian American “Mzungu” in East Africa. She spent a month in Northern Uganda recording a hit rap album “Mzungu Price” with local rappers and doing research for that show. She has taught at Cal Arts in the MFA Creative Writing Program and twice given the commencement speech at UCLA, her alma mater. 11 Nov 2019 | 129 - THE GREAT HACK w Casey Ley | 01:14:14
We’re recapping THE GREAT HACK (2019). Wish there was a simple way to understand what Cambridge Analytica did that will take less than two hours? It turns out they experimented on a bunch of countries before bringing their psychographic meme warfare to the Trump and Brexit campaigns. Directors Karim Amer and Jehane Noujiam do their best following CA insider Brittany Kaiser, as well as journalists and professors trying to trace what happened to all of our personal data. Our guest is comedian Casey Ley, who was voted Best Comedian in San Francisco by SFWeekly, national runner-up in The Advocate Magazine's search for The Next Great Queer Comedian, and is one of the hosts of The Gay Power Half Hour podcast. 14 May 2018 | 87 - WEST OF MEMPHIS w Gavin Michael Booth | 01:14:34
It's MAYHEM again, our month-long coverage of True Crime documentaries. Part 1 of our True Crime series starts off with West of Memphis (2012 Amy Berg). We recap this follow-up to the Paradise Lost series with horror filmmaker Gavin Michael Booth. Gavin is shooting a new feature film "Last Call" this summer, and make sure to check out his newly released music videos for artist SYML titled "Body" and "The War"! Canadian born director Gavin Michael Booth’s film, music video and commercial work has been featured around the globe in theatres, on television and online. His work includes collaborations with Third Eye Blind, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Blumhouse, Royal Bank of Canada and more. Currently LA-based, Gavin is available for projects in the U.S. & Canada. As with the Paradise Lost film and its two sequels, West of Memphis follows the events of the West Memphis Three, a case in which three teenagers (Jessie Misskelley, Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin) were arrested for the murders of three 8-year old children. The West Memphis Three were subsequently convicted of murder and remained in prison for more than 18 years. West of Memphis focuses on Terry Hobbs, stepfather of Stevie Branch, one of the victims of the 1993 crime, as a potential suspect due to physical evidence linking him to the crime, a history of violent behavior and his lack of an alibi for the time the murders were committed, as well as damaging statements made by his ex-wife, former neighbors, and most recently his own nephew, who claims Hobbs confessed to him. The film reveals that inexplicably Terry Hobbs was not interviewed by police at the time of the murders. *If you love listening to Sup Doc please consider being a patron by supporting us thru our Patreon page! *We have a live screening and panel for Freaks and Geeks: The Documentary at SF DocFest! 18 Mar 2019 | 110 - LEAVING NEVERLAND w Chris Martin | 01:21:07
We recap Dan Reed’s two part HBO Documentary LEAVING NEVERLAND, a harrowing tale of James Safechuck and Wade Robson coming to terms with being abused as children by their hero, Michael Jackson. We should add “allegedly abused”; it’s part of the complicated story that emerges over this four hour watch, which is potentially triggering in the graphic descriptions of its subject matter. But we’re here to talk through it in our usual Sup Doc recap style. Our guest is comedian Chris Martin (not the other guy), who’s television credits include BBC3 shows Euro’s Most Amazing Moments, Most Annoying People, and World Cup’s Most Shocking Moments. 18 Feb 2019 | 108 - THEORY OF OBSCURITY: A FILM ABOUT THE RESIDENTS w Conan Neutron | 01:14:16
Today we're talking Theory of Obscurity: A Film About the Residents, directed by Don Hardy Jr. This 2015 film peels back some of the mysterious layers surrounding the San Francisco experimental music entity that has been churning out bizarre and uncompromising albums for over 40 years. Along the way there are talking head interviews with Les Claypool, Penn Jillette, Matt Groening, and (probably) some Residents. Our guest is Conan Neutron, a musician and scene organizer behind Victory and Associates, Mount Vicious, and his most recent project Conan Neutron & The Secret Friends (with Dale Crover of Melvins on drums). We discuss his love for the world-making aspects of The Residents and finding a home in weird music. You can stream Theory of Obscurity on Amazon. 10 Jun 2019 | 118 - THE GODFATHERS OF HARDCORE director Ian McFarland | 01:06:26
On episode 118 George is joined all the way from Boston by director Ian McFarland. They discuss Ian's start in documentary, playing bass in punk bands of his own, and crafting a true story of friendship and chosen family out of three decades of hardcore punk history. Vinnie Stigma and Roger Miret have been the longest serving members of foundational New York Hardcore band Agnostic Front. The band goes from sharing an Ed Koch-era Lower East Side squat to international cult acclaim. 60-something Stigma (birth name Capuccio) longs for an older way of life, pre-Giuliani gentrification, while being something of a grown-up kid. Miret has become a suburban Arizona family man, but has a lot of demons that are revealed throughout the film. How does one age gracefully, or at all, in the mosh pit of midlife? While many music docs follow a familiar talking head arc, McFarland has more to say about belonging, male bonding, and identity. 07 Dec 2020 | 161 - ZAPPA w Kevin Seal | 01:16:29
George and Paco sit down with musician and journalist Kevin Seal to recap Alex Winter’s 2020 documentary Zappa. On this episode we have three different Frank Zappa fans ranging from George, who is new to Zappa’s music, to Kevin, who loves Zappa but occasionally needs a break to Paco, who has been a life long Zappa-head. We get into many topics including: would Zappa be a Trumper, our collective love of Ruth Underwood, Steve Vai’s audition, how art should be a threat to the establishment, Gail Zappa, being an archivist, Captain Beefheart, Edgard Varèse and much more! Frank Zappa – you either love him or hate him. There is no in between. There have been a few Zappa documentaries out in the last few years but this time it would seem that Alex Winter is a fan first and filmmaker second. “Zappa” is a six-years-in-the-making love letter. Alex was given the family’s blessing and access to the prolific musician’s personal vault and he used as much as he could. We are privy to rarely seen and heard music, films, home movies and interviews up to the point of being just a few months before Zappa’s death in 1993. Kevin Seal has been writing and recording unfashionable music since the ’90s. His band Griddle released four studio records, including a concept album about Olympic athletes and cannibalism. He has played and sung on albums by 20 Minute Loop, Michael Zapruder, and more. Since the shelter-at-home began, he has co-hosted a music game show called Lo Fidelity. He grew up in Cincinnati. 22 Jun 2020 | 147 - ROGER AND ME | 00:52:49
Hosts Paco and George review the 1989 Michael Moore debut Roger & Me. Foundational to modern American documentary, this is a biting, vital, and angry film that is sadly still relevant today. Michael Moore demands answers when General Motors suddenly closes the doors of all its auto plants in the Flint, Michigan, the city where he grew up. With over 30,000 people out of work, Flint is economically devastated, and Moore aims to track down GM CEO Roger Smith to make him answer for his actions. While on the search, Moore also chronicles the emotional effect the closings have had on his family and friends, while violent crimes begin to skyrocket in Flint. As Moore pokes around what has been described by one magazine as "the worst place to live in America", he finds out how the local populace is coping with GM's betrayal of the American Dream. Among those visited are a family who is evicted just before Christmas, and an enterprising middle-aged woman who set up a thriving business slaughtering and skinning rabbits. Never feigning objectivity, Moore contrasts the impact of the shutdown on the average Joes and Janes with the diffident reaction of Flint's power elite. The latter's patronizing attitude towards the unemployed multitudes is succinctly captured in the scenes in which visiting celebrities Robert Schuller, Anita Bryant, Bobby Vinton and Pat Boone exhort the citizenry to grin and bear it. Even more out of synch is "Miss Michigan" Kaye Lani Rae Rafko, who in her morale-boosting speech to the disenfranchised GM employees begs them to pull for her in the upcoming Miss America pageant! The film's throughline is Moore's futile effort to locate GM chairman Roger Smith, so that he can show Moore first-hand the utter devastation of Flint. Roger & Me is very funny, but it is the gallows humor of soldiers about to embark on a suicide mission. In 1992, Michael Moore more or less updated Roger & Me with his half-hour short subject Pets or Meat: The Return to Flint. We also learn about Paco's time working third shift in a GM plant, why no one in San Francisco works, being a living statue, '80s fashions, woke branding, and debate whether soda is food. 16 Apr 2018 | 85 - WILD WILD COUNTRY w Richard Parks III | 01:16:57
We implore you, have you seen the six-part Netflix docu-series WILD WILD COUNTRY yet? If not, what are you waiting for? When the Rajneesh movement and their leader the Bhagwan came to rural Oregon in the 1980s was it just a clash of cultures (worldly orange-clad hippies vs. conservative townspeople) or a mafia-style hostile takeover? The directors Maclain and Chapman Way have crafted a twisting drama with unearthed videotape of the Rajneeshpuram saga, plus new interviews with many key players. While most of you reading this may not know the name Bhagwan Rajneesh, those who were around to watch the news in the early 1980s can tell you that he was a massive story around the country. That’s because Rajneesh and his followers spent $125 million back in 1981 to build Rajneeshpuram in in the Oregon desert, a 64,000-acre “utopia,” complete with a hospital, schools, restaurants, a shopping mall, and their own airport. What happened there and in the surrounding area is so far-fetched that you won’t believe it’s all true. One of the great things about the doc is the way the filmmakers weave footage from the actual events in alongside new interviews with the people involved. Our guest is journalist-podcaster/multi-hyphenate Los Angeles native, Richard Parks III. Richard has written for Lucky Peach, the New York Times, and McSweeney's. He has created a radio drama with Wayne Coyne, the short doc Music Man Murray, a documentary about Biosphere2, and contributed to Snap Judgement and KCRW’s Lost Notes. 20 Feb 2017 | 51 - THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE w Henry Phillips | 01:02:01
George Chen and Paco Romane talk with comedian/musician Henry Phillips about his favorite doc THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE! Released in 2002, The Kid Stays in the Picture uses Evans' narration interspersed mostly with photographs from Evans' life as well as brief film footage from films such as Love Story, The Sun Also Rises, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, and The Godfather just to name a few...what makes this doc so great is Evans himself and how he changed Hollywood. Henry Phillips has been seen and heard performing his twisted songs and stories on ‘Comedy Central Presents’, ABC’s ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, as well as satellite and terrestrial radio nationwide. His critically acclaimed comedy albums earned him mention in Billboard magazine’s ‘Critic’s Choice’, as well as acclaim from such notable artists as Moby, who has referred to Phillips’ music as “disconcertingly funny”. He has also made acting appearances on HBO’s “Silicon Valley” (4 episodes) and Comedy Central’s “Drunk History”. His YouTube channel, featuring the tutorial cooking series “Henry’s Kitchen”, has garnered over 3 million views. Phillips continues to tour comedy and music venues throughout the US and beyond. 09 Jul 2018 | 92 - EVIL GENIUS with comedian Chad Opitz | 01:02:28
On episode 92 host Paco Romane chats with the lovely and talented Chad Opitz about Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist! Evil Genius is a 2018 true crime docuseries about the murder of Brian Wells, a high-profile 2003 incident often referred to as the "collar bomb" or "pizza bomber" case. It was released on Netflix as a four-part series on May 11, 2018. Evil Genius is one of those docs that keeps you saying “no way” and wanting to binge watch the entire series. Seriously. It’s nuts. If the Apple Dumpling gang were MENSA members with a taste for revenge, money and murder you’d have the makings of Evil Genius. Chad is a comic whose hilarious and unique perspective is making him an oft booked staple at Bay Area clubs and showcases. Veering between one-liners, short story jokes, and sometimes even song, Opitz' writing is as well-regarded as his character and performance work. 03 Apr 2017 | 54 - ACCIDENTAL COURTESY: DARYL DAVIS, RACE & AMERICA director Matt Ornstein | 00:48:33
George visits the home of the filmmaker Matt Ornstein in Silver Lake. Matt made one of 2016’s most fascinating, complex portraits, ACCIDENTAL COURTESY: Daryl Davis, Race and America. Daryl Davis is an African-American musician who ends up confronting and sometimes befriending members of the KKK and other white nationalist groups. What could go wrong? George wanted to know more about Matt's background, his feelings about the late Frank Ancona, and some pivotal scenes in the documentary. Accidental Courtesy is now available on Netflix. We conducted this interview in early March before the death of Chuck Berry. Musician Daryl Davis has played all over the world with legends like Chuck Berry and Little Richard, but it’s what he does in his free time that sets him apart. Daryl likes to meet and befriend members of the Ku Klux Klan– something few black men can say. In his travels, he’s collected robes and other artifacts from friends who have left the klan, building a collection piece by piece, story by story, person by person in hopes of eventually opening a “Museum of the Klan”. In Accidental Courtesy, Daryl’s journey takes him to across the country, from DC to California, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri and Alabama, from old friends who have left the klan, to friends still active in the organization, including a current Imperial Wizard of the KKK. In an age of digital disconnection, Daryl’s method is rooted in personal interaction and we as viewers reap the rewards. Matt Ornstein founded Sound & Vision Productions in 2006. Since then, Sound and Vision has produced and developed music videos, commercials, and short and feature length films. Sound & Vision produced the Matt Ornstein directed Atlantis in 2012 staring Jason Ritter and the space shuttle Atlantis. It appeared in film festivals including Austin, Orlando, London, Cannes, Santa Barbara, Taiwan and 15 others. Matt is the Creative Director of Sound and Vision, and has directed music videos for artists including Radiohead, Daft Punk, Penguin Prison, Cobra Starship, Ashtar Command, and Harmar Superstar. 17 Aug 2020 | 153 - THE GO-GO'S w Dakin Hardwick | 01:17:51
Today Paco and George are joined by Dakin Hardwick to recap the new Showtime documentary The Go Go’s. Notably the first all-femme band to write their own songs, play their own instruments, and snag a #1 US album. Directed by Allison Ellwood, this straightforward music documentary looks at the LA group's rise, reign and breakup, along with youthful ambition, firings, drugs, rehab, money squabbles, breakup, and inevitable reunions. Dakin Hardwick is the one of the founders of Spinning Platters, a website started by a small group of Bay Area based music fans. 28 Oct 2019 | 128 - JAWLINE w Elijah Katz and Sophie Klem | 01:19:13
Did you watch Jawline? Liza Mandelup's 2019 Hulu documentary was a Sundance hit, capturing a scene of teenage influencers and influencer kingmakers, and to a lesser extent the girls that pay to interact with them. Without a heavy-handed narration it's all shot in a gauzy dream-like way. Protagonist Austyn Tester is from a small Tennessee town and plays the naive foil to media shark Michael Weist. It all makes one wonder who this film is targeted at, and does it warrant the attention it got? Will you do what it takes to become a living meme, including drop out of high school? And is this still better than the Travis Scott documentary? George's guests are a young couple who watched this film together, possibly an awkward date night. Elijah Katz is a Los Angeles born and bred comedian who runs “Margaret: a mid-city comedy show” every other Wednesday at a vintage shop. The rest of the time no one is sure what to do with him. He loves Sophie very much. Sophie Klem is a recent graduate of Pratt Institute in New York. She works in fashion in Los Angeles. She loves Elijah very much. *Will this film help build up Austyn's social media numbers? Tyler spent over twenty years following Tony Conrad and decided to put it all into one documentary encompassing Conrad's life and art, as if there were a distinction between the two. We also talk about punk rock and mental illness, Tony Labat, getting multiple angles for beer, Faust, Bad Brains, Tony as Tupac, Crispin Glover, and mashing up different video formats. 22 Feb 2016 | 24 - THE CULT OF JT LEROY director Marjorie Sturm | 00:57:04
On EP 24 Paco and George talk with filmmaker Marjorie Sturm about her documentary The Cult of JT LeRoy. We talk about JT Leroy's first two novels Sarah and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things and we get into hero worship, cons, Rachel Dolezal, improvisation, filmmaking and much more. Authorized and unauthorized, The Cult of JT Leroy received two Jury Awards for Best Feature Documentary (SF IndieFest and Oslo/Fusion International) in 2015 and played at top-tier festivals around the world. Ethically charged, controversial, and confusing, JT’s life and death sprang open a Pandora’s box of powerful questions about literature and culture, identity and celebrity, and the reality of the society we live in. Fraud? Art? Sociopathy? Complicity? The Cult of JT Leroy is a testament to this bizarre and elaborate story that has captured the attention of the world’s media and perplexes to this day. Jeremiah "Terminator" LeRoy was a literary persona created in 1994 by American writer Laura Albert. LeRoy was supposedly born October 31, 1980 in West Virginia. His backstory was one of prostitution, drug addiction, and vagrancy in California. After his first novel Sarah was published, "LeRoy" started making public appearances. A January 2006 article in The New York Times declared that the person acting as LeRoy in public was Albert's sister-in-law, Savannah Knoop. Knoop wrote her own memoir of the experience called Girl Boy Girl. An Albert-endorsed documentary by Jeff Feuerzeig, Author: The JT LeRoy Story, premiered at Sundance 2016. Marjorie Sturm is an award-winning filmmaker whose films span a broad perspective: narrative, documentary, and experimental. She was an interviewer, cinematographer, and Bay Area media wrangler for the 99%-Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film which premiered at Sundance in 2013. She received the Grand Festival Award at Berkeley Video and Film Festival for her short narrative "Smoke the Pipe Dream." Sturm has created social activism videos for Consumers Union and worked as a social worker with the mentally ill homeless in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. Sturm studied Psychology at the University of Michigan, and received her MFA in Cinema from San Francisco State University. She is the younger sibling of the graphic novelist James Sturm and the painter/photographer Ilona Sturm. Sturm lives in San Francisco with composer Ernesto Diaz-Infante and their two children. 01 Feb 2023 | 191 - MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM w Daniel Gill | 01:03:15
MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM is a 2022 doc based on the book of the same name by Lizzy Goodman. Directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern, this look at '00s nostalgia focuses on a cluster of rock bands coming out of New York and Brooklyn at the beginning of the George W. Bush era. These bands that went on to define this scene were The Moldy Peaches, The Strokes, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, and TV On the Radio - or so this film would have us believe. It's inarguable that this cluster of musicians made a lasting impact on music culture and are among the most successful acts still touring. The doc digs in, but is there much dirt to unveil? Our guest is returning indie rock veteran, publicist Daniel Gill. 10 Dec 2018 | 103 - RESTREPO w comedian Jeff Dean | 01:14:06
Restrepo is a 2010 American documentary film about the Afghanistan war, directed by American journalist Sebastian Junger and British photojournalist Tim Hetherington. The film explores the year that Junger and Hetherington spent in Afghanistan on assignment for Vanity Fair. The 2nd Platoon is depicted defending the outpost (OP) named after a platoon medic who was killed earlier in the campaign, PFC Juan Sebastián Restrepo, a Colombian-born naturalized U.S. citizen. Jeff Dean is a San Francisco-based comedian, writer, and actor originally from Reno, Nevada. Over the years, he’s become a staple in the Bay Area Stand Up comedy scene. He currently runs two weekly comedy showcases, The Fun Stuff at The Laundry in San Francisco, and Double Standard Comedy Night at Double Standard Brewery in Oakland. If documentaries are meant to change hearts and minds, that’s exactly what Sebastian Junger’s “Restrepo” has done for Jeff. Since seeing this doc, Jeff has grown a deep empathy for our nation’s veterans, and decided to produce benefit comedy shows raising money for non-profits benefiting veterans experiencing homelessness. This partnership lead a much bigger life change, as he switched careers, quitting sales to join a non-profit providing direct service to people experiencing homelessness. Jeff’s life has changed quite a bit, and while there were many factors that lead to these decisions, none of them would have been made without the decision to watch “Restrepo” along with the follow up documentary “Korengal”. 22 Jan 2018 | 79 - KUMARE w Krista Fatka | 01:15:42
Our guest is comedian Krista Fatka. Krista's choice of doc was Vikram Gandhi’s 2012 KUMARE. Gandhi, a lapsed Hindu, conducts an experiment posing as a guru named Kumare. Kūmāré/Gandhi attracts a number of followers in Arizona and is surprised to find they are getting genuine benefits from his deception. The question is when and how he’ll reveal the truth behind Kumare. We discuss a lot in this episode: comparing this film to prank-based non-fiction like Nathan For You and Borat, Tony Robbins, Burning Man, Westworld, Cafe Gratitude, past scams we've been victim to, and spiritual seeking for cynics. Krista Fatka recently won first place in The Sacramento Comedy Competition and along with Paco Romane produces The Charm Offensive at the San Francisco Punch Line. With over a decade of performance experience in circus and theater, she’s as comfortable on stage as she is in a room full of clowns. Which is to say, pretty comfy. 21 Mar 2016 | 26 - RELIGULOUS w Todd Glass | 01:01:32
On Episode 26 of Sup Doc Paco sits down with the hilarious comedian and podcast host (The Todd Glass Show) Todd Glass. They have a candid and funny talk about the 2008 Bill Maher documentary Religulous (available on Netflix) plus organized religion, treating people with respect, and how this documentary changed Todd. In Religulous Bill Maher plays devil's advocate with religion as he talks to believers about their faith. Bill Maher interviews some of religion's oddest adherents. Muslims, Jews and Christians of many kinds pass before his jaundiced eye. Maher goes to a Creationist Museum in Kentucky, which shows that dinosaurs and people lived at the same time 5000 years ago. He talks to truckers at a Truckers' Chapel. (Sign outside: "Jesus love you.") He goes to a theme park called Holy Land in Florida. He speaks to a rabbi in league with Holocaust deniers. He talks to a Muslim musician who preaches hatred of Jews. Maher finds the unlikeliest of believers and, in a certain Vatican priest, he even finds an unlikely skeptic. Todd Glass' comedy is often satirical, sometimes irreverent but always funny. His television appearances are many and he has become a veritable fixture on Comedy Central. His podcast The Todd Glass Show is on The Nerdist podcasting network. http://twitter.com/ToddGlass Follow us on: Twitter: @supdocpdocast Instagram: @supdocpodcast Facebook: @supdocpodcast And you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon. 14 Sep 2020 | 155 - CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS w Curtis Cook | 01:21:07
Today we recap an all-time classic, Capturing The Friedmans, and get into a lively debate about how this documentary stacks up in today’s world. Was director Andrew Jarecki irresponsible in how he handled the footage and information he had? Was there a bias towards helping Jesse? Will our guest Curtis Cook and Paco ever see eye-to-eye on this doc? Listen to find out! The true crime documentary Capturing The Friedmans was directed by Andrew Jarecki. Released in 2003, this was Jarecki’s first film and was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award. While preparing a documentary about children’s birthday party entertainers, Jarecki learned that professional clown David Friedman, was the son and brother of two men who had been convicted of child sexual abuse in a high-profile 1980s criminal trial. Using home videos made by the Friedman family before and during the trial, Jarecki explores the conflicting stories of the accused, the alleged victims and the investigators as this modern day Greek tragedy unfolds on film. There are many documentaries like Capturing The Friedmans but somehow this doc is entirely unforgettable. Our guest Curtis Cook is a writer and standup comedian living in Los Angeles. He’s puked after a keg stand on a show called Flophouse, traveled through an Ebola checkpoint for a segment on Vice News, and awkwardly interacting with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein during a sketch on Portlandia. Most recently, Curtis’ standup has appeared on Comedy Central, where he also wrote for the reboot of Crank Yankers and was a writer/correspondent for the WGA Award nominated The Jim Jefferies Show. *Brendan Lynch's "clown joke" is not really a clown joke *Curtis' shutdown talk show The End Is Night Follow Curtis Cook on: Twitter: @curtis_cook Instagram: @curtsicookcomedy Follow us on: Twitter: @supdocpodcast Instagram: @supdocpodcast Facebook: @supdocpodcast And you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.
