Clem's sound has transitioned from lo-fi and garage rock on her debut release Hazel Princess in 2014 to a more polished rock sound, with elements of grunge, punk and new wave on their subsequent releases Apocalipstick and Stuffed & Ready. Well, Allen is a Legendary Recording Engineer, a Multi Studio Owner, He Designs Speakers, he's a Record Producer & Businessman and what doesn't he do is a better question! Today Allen Sides sits down with Drew Dempsey in Studio 2 at Sunset Sound as well as a few special guests, the first one being 10x Grammy Winning Recording Engineer & Producer Joe Chiccarelli, the next is Sunset Sound studio owner Paul Camarata to complete the Roundtable. Allen started his Ocean Way Recording brand in a garage in Santa Monica, California in 1968. It was only meant as a place to showcase his custom monitors. From these humble beginnings the empire expanded to include partnering with Bill Putnam and acquiring his United Recording Studio in Hollywood and building state of the art recording facilities in Nashville, St. Barths, and nearby Sherman Oaks. The Ocean Way "brand" also includes Allen's high-end (and excellent sounding) monitors, a unique and affordable microphone, excellent UAD plug-ins, drum samples, and even an iPad/iPhone app. Allen is also well known for being a meticulous engineer/producer, having worked with such artists as Phil Collins, Green Day, Eric Clapton, Faith Hill, Wynonna Judd, Beck, Mary J. Blige, Ry Cooder, Joni Mitchell, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, André Previn, Michael Jackson, and Frank Zappa. He's also well known for leading the charge on reclaiming classic tube mics and gear that was being abandoned in the '80s; he has probably listened to, and evaluated, more microphones than most of us ever will. Having owned Record One Studio in the hey-day of recording, Allen was very open about the Michael Jackson sessions as well as selling the establishment to Rap Mogul Dr. Dre. in 1988 Mike Piersante was a young drummer in the LA area. That same year he would be hired as a studio runner at Sunset Sound, a moment that would be step 1 of the rest of his life and that would set a path for decades to come. Mike received a compliment one afternoon from Sunset Sound founder Tutti Camarata, stating that he would be a "great engineer" one day. That set Mike on fire and would do everything he could and then some to do just that... become a "great engineer" one day. After getting picked up by T Bone Burnett in the early 90's to be his engineer, Mike would go on to work with the biggest artist's, bands and films of all time. Recording albums for Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, John Mellencamp among so many others. Not to mention the films Mike has engineered including Walk The Line, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou & Inside Llewyn Davis. Sound Techniques Owner, Danny White is no stranger to a challenge. In 2015 he purchased the company Sound Techniques which was responsible for making one of the most premier and top level recording consoles throughout 1965- 1974. Sunset Sound was the first one in The United States to get one of these English Made Consoles and it wound up being used on the some of the best known albums of all time from John Lennon, Frank Zappa, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Captain Beefheart, The Doors, Elton John and so so many more. At 84 years of age, Don Randi is still playing piano and is still sharp as a tack. He sat down in studio 1 at Sunset Sound to share his life story of playing in Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound", The Wrecking Crew, Brian Wilson, and The Beach Boys and so much more. He has played on over 4,000 tracks and Don gives insight to the "studio musicians" of the 1960s and even sits down at the piano he bought for Sunset Sound in 1960 to play his original "Mexican Pearls". Don still plays piano at his LA club The Baked Potato and is an eternal treasure to music.
